1997 - Michael Owen scored his first reds hat-trick as we beat Grimsby Town 3-0 at Anfield in a League Cup Fourth Round tie.

Derby despair
1995 - Robbie Fowler netted our consolation very late on as we lost 2-1 at home to Everton through an Andrei Kanchelskis brace, two of his five goals past us. Ex-red Gary Ablett was carried off with knee ligament damage.

Finland’s best
2002 - Sami Hyypiä was named Finland’s Player of the Year, retaining the award he had won the previous year. He went on to win this award on six occasions within the space of eight years.

Beating the Mancs
1978 - Phil Neal converted a late penalty to hand us a 1-0 victory over Manchester City at Anfield after Ray Kennedy was apparently fouled in the area, although he admitted, “I don’t know what the penalty was for.” However, we had been denied a clear spot-kick earlier for a foul on Alan Kennedy.
1925 – We were thumped 5-0 at Maine Road to bow out of the Lancashire Senior Cup at the Second Round stage.

1911 - We also sent Manchester United home without the First Division points, with Jack Parkinson adding to a John Bovill brace in our 3-2 victory. Charlie Roberts struck, with Enoch West bagging one of his eight goals past us.
1939 - Willie Fagan bagged the only goal of our Wartime League meeting with United at Anfield from the spot.

Mo again
2017 - Mohamed Salah scored in his third consecutive game as we beat Southampton 3-0 at Anfield, bagging a brace with Philippe Coutinho also on target.

Archie signs on
1929 – Scottish inside-left Archie McPherson signed from Rangers. He bagged nineteen goals in 133 reds games as we endured a barren spell. He moved on to Sheffield United in December 1934, appearing for the Blades in the FA Cup Final as they lost to Arsenal at Wembley in 1936.

An Anfield win
1931 - Future reds Ernie Blenkinsop and Tom Cooper both featured for the home side as England beat Wales 3-1 at Anfield in the British International Championships.

Twice against Villa and the Geordies
We have twice entertained Aston Villa in the First Division on this day in history, without losing.
1899 - We drew 3-3 when Johnny Walker, Hugh Morgan and Alex Raisbeck were on the scoresheet. Keeper Harry Storer put through his own net, with Jack Devey bagging one of his seven goals against the reds and Albert Wilkes also on target.
1922 - Donald McKinlay, Harry Chambers and Dick Johnson struck as we won 3-0.

1984 - We won 2-0 at Newcastle United with Steve Nicol and John Wark netting.
1972 - We also beat United in the top-flight at home with Peter Cormack, Alec Lindsay and John Toshack grabbing our goals as we won 3-2, despite Tommy Smith missing a penalty. John Tudor bagged one of his five goals against the reds, with Malcolm MacDonald striking one of his seven past us.

Happy birthdays
1997 – Midfielder Ovie Ejaria was born in Southwark in south London. He made eight senior appearances, moving on to Reading in August 2020 after a successful campaign on loan.
1968 – Chief Scout Barry Hunter was born in Coleraine, Northern Ireland. He played as a defender for Wrexham and Reading, before moving into coaching and then scouting for Blackburn Rovers, Norwich City and most recently Manchester City, joining the reds in June 2012.
1948 - Former reds goalkeeping coach Joe Corrigan was born in Manchester. He made nearly 600 appearances for Manchester City, as well as winning nine England caps. He spent ten years on our backroom staff before moving on after the arrival of Rafael Benítez.

Finn to Fulham
1998 - Steve Finnan joined Kevin Keegan’s Fulham from Notts County for £600,000. He went on to play 209 times for the Cottagers, netting seven times and winning First and Second Division League titles, to add to the Third Division he had won with County.
2006 - Finn played his hundredth reds League game in our goalless Premiership draw at Middlesbrough as our away day blues continued.

Off the mark
2014 – Future red Roberto Firmino struck his first goal for Brazil as they won a friendly 2-1 in Austria. On the same day, Stewart Downing won his first cap as a West Ham United player as Roy Hodgson’s England won 3-1 in Scotland, with future red Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain scoring one of the goals and Andy Robertson netting his first senior strike and only one as a Hull City player. Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert, Lazar Marković, Martin Škrtel, Raheem Sterling, future reds Nathaniel Clyne and James Milner, and ex-reds Alberto Aquilani and Javier Mascherano also played for their countries that day.

2019 – Future reed Federico Chiesa bagged his first senior international goal as Italy thrashed Armenia 9-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Palermo.
1998 - Future red Yossi Benayoun made his senior international debut as Israel lost a friendly 2-0 in Portugal, who included fellow future red Abel Xavier.

Reds on opposite sides
1998 - Patrik Berger and future red Vladimír Šmicer both ran out at Wembley as England beat the Czech Republic 2-0 in a friendly, with Robbie Fowler coming on as a substitute. Meanwhile, Vegard Heggem and future red Stéphane Henchoz also played in international friendlies.
1939 - England’s Jack Balmer netted past future reds keeper Cyril Sidlow as they beat Wales 3-2 in a Wartime international at the Racecourse Ground.

First and last caps
2020 – Ozan Kabak won his last cap for Turkey before joining the reds on loan as they lost a UEFA Nations League group game in Hungary. Harry Wilson netted for Wales in their 3-1 defeat of Finland in Cardiff, with Gini Wijnaldum on target while captaining the Netherlands as they won 2-1 in Poland. Kostas Tsimikas, Andy Robertson and ex-red Danny Ward all also played, with ex-reds coach Steve Clarke taking charge of Scotland.
2019 - Luis Suárez won his final cap as a Barcelona player, scoring as Uruguay drew 2-2 in a friendly with Argentina in Israel, with ex-red Sebastián Coates also featuring. Future red Melkamu Frauendorf played for Germany Under-16’s for the fourth and last time as they beat the Czech Republic 3-0 in Bogen.
2014 - Xherdan Shaqiri played for Switzerland for the last time as a Bayern München player in their 2-2 draw with Poland in a friendly in Wroclaw. Meanwhile, ex-red Alexander Kačaniklić won his nineteenth and final senior cap in Sweden’s 1-0 defeat in France, with future red Loris Karius playing for Germany Under-21’s for the only time as they drew a friendly 1-1 with the Czech Republic in Prague.

2008 – Adam Lallana won his only cap for England Under-21’s, coming off the bench in their 2-0 friendly defeat of the Czech Republic at Bramall Lane. On the same day, Ragnar Klavan won his first cap as an AZ Alkmaar player in Estonia’s 1-0 friendly defeat of Moldova in Tallinn. Future reds Mario Balotelli and Victor Moses were also in international action that day.
1998 - Dietmar Hamann won his first cap as a Newcastle United player, and thirteenth in total, as Germany were held to a 1-1 draw in their friendly against the Netherlands in Gelsenkirchen. On the same day, Jason McAteer won his 28th cap, and his final one as a reds player, as the Republic of Ireland lost 1-0 in a Euro 2000 qualifier in Yugoslavia. Steve Staunton also played.
1981 - Avi Cohen won his first cap in his second spell with Maccabi Tel-Aviv as Israel lost a World Cup qualifier 1-0 in Northern Ireland. Kenny Dalglish, Alan Hansen, Terry McDermott, Phil Neal, Ian Rush, Graeme Souness, Phil Thompson and ex-reds Joey Jones and Kevin Keegan all also played in qualifiers that day.

Half century for Aldo
1992 - Ex-red John Aldridge had a goal wrongly ruled out for offside while winning his fiftieth cap. The Republic of Ireland held Spain to a goalless draw in their World Cup qualifier in Seville, with ex-reds Ray Houghton and Steve Staunton also playing. Ian Rush, ex-reds Jim Magilton and Dean Saunders, and future reds Paul Ince, Gary McAllister and Karlheinz Riedle all also featured in internationals that day, with Roy Hodgson taking charge of Switzerland.

Management moves
1990 - John Toshack was sacked as Manager of Real Madrid on the back of three straight defeats, eleven games into the new season, having led them to the League title earlier that year. He returned to the Bernabeu in February 1999, lasting just nine months before being dismissed again.
2009 – King Kenny’s son Paul was appointed Head Coach of USSF Division 2 expansion team Tampa Bay. However, he left by mutual consent in September 2010.

Young future reds on target
2003 - Djibril Cissé struck as France Under-21’s lost the second leg of their European Championships play-off game 2-1 to Portugal in Clermont-Ferrand. He was later dismissed, which led to him missing out on the senior Euro 2004 tournament. Alou Diarra and Florent Sinama-Pongolle both also featured with the tie ending level at 3-3 on aggregate, although Portugal won through 4-1 on penalties. Meanwhile, future red Robbie Keane bagged a brace as the Republic of Ireland beat Canada 3-0 in a friendly in Dublin and Roy Hodgson took charge of United Arab Emirates as they beat Sri Lanka 3-1 in an AFC Asian Cup qualifier in Dubai.

2020 – Future red Cody Gakpo netted for the Dutch Under-21’s as they lost a European Championships qualifier 2-1 in Portugal.
1995 - Leicester City’s Emile Heskey struck twice for England Under-18’s in their 6-2 European Championships qualifying defeat of Sweden in Kettering.
1980 - Future red David Hodgson grabbed his first goal for England Under-21’s as they thumped Switzerland 5-0 in a European Championships qualifier at Portman Road.

2009 – Future red Raul Meireles scored the only goal in the second leg of Portugal’s World Cup play-off meeting with Bosnia-Herzegovina in Zenica. Ex-red Robbie Keane also netted as the Republic of Ireland drew their controversial encounter with France in Paris 1-1 after extra time, with ex-reds Nicolas Anelka and Alou Diarra therefore both qualifying for the Finals in South Africa. Future red Joe Allen scored his last goal for Wales Under-21’s as Sotirios Kyrgiakos and future red Luis Suárez both also helped their countries to reach the World Cup Finals, while Ryan Babel, Dirk Kuyt, Nikolay Mihaylov, Pepe Reina, ex-reds Xabi Alonso, Álvaro Arbeloa, Harry Kewell and future reds John Heitinga, Milan Jovanović, Dejan Lovren, Christian Poulsen and Kolo Touré were all also in international action.

2007 – Future red Luis Suárez netted as Uruguay drew 2-2 with Chile in a World Cup qualifier in Montevideo. On the same day, future reds keeper Ádám Bogdán was sent off as Hungary Under-21’s lost a European Championships qualifier 1-0 in Latvia, with Krisztián Nemeth also featuring.
2018 – Naby Keïta captained Guinea as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Ivory Coast in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Conakry. On the same day, Dejan Lovren reached a half century of caps for Croatia as they were beaten 2-1 by England in a UEFA Nations League group game at Wembley. Joe Gomez, Liam Millar, Divock Origi, Xherdan Shaqiri and ex-reds Péter Gulácsi, Raheem Sterling and Suso also in international action as Abel Xavier took charge of Mozambique.
2022 – Rigobert Song took charge of Cameroon as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Panama in Abu Dhabi. Mohamed Salah played in Egypt’s 2-1 defeat of Belgium in Kuwait, with ex-red Marko Grujić featuring in Serbia’s 5-1 triumph in Bahrain.

1967 – Cecil Irwin put through his own net as we drew 1-1 at Sunderland, with Neil Martin scoring one of his four goals against the reds. This was Bill Shankly’s 400th game in charge of the reds.
1961 – We won 2-1 in a Second Division trip to Huddersfield Town, thanks to goals from Jimmy Melia and Roger Hunt.
1950 – Arsenal won 3-1 at Anfield as Doug Lishman struck one of his four goals past us, Don Roper scored one of his five with Jimmy Logie also on target, while Denis Compton scored an own goal.

1933 – Sam English netted as we lost 3-1 at Derby County. Jack Nicholas bagged the first of his four goals against us, with Dally Duncan and Jack Bowers also on target.
1905 – Joe Hewitt was on target as Preston North End held us to a 1-1 draw in L4, with Dickie Bond scoring the first of his four goals past us.
1893 – We beat Notts County 2-1 in a home Second Division encounter thanks to goals from Patrick Gordon and David Henderson.

Mark moves
2005 - Ex-reserves forward Mark Smyth signed for Accrington Stanley. He had made just one solitary first-team appearance, in the Carling Cup win at Tottenham Hotspur in December 2004, but only spent one season with Stanley.

2011 – Keeper Brad Jones sadly lost his son Luca, who died aged just six years old from leukaemia.
2017 – Left-back Alberto Moreno became a father for the first time, to Alberto Jnr.
