Derby joy
2008 - We bounced back from defeat at Old Trafford by beating Everton 1-0 at Anfield. Pepe Reina kept his 54th clean sheet in his hundredth League game, a new club record to beat Ray Clemence on 53. Fernando Torres scored our hundredth goal of the season early on, notching in his sixth consecutive League home game, equalling a club record, while the club reached 3,000 League points.
1940 - Berry Nieuwenhuys grabbed a brace with Billy Liddell also on the scoresheet as we won a Wartime League match 3-1 at Everton.

Reds being born
1892 – A meeting was held in the Neptune Hotel in Clayton Square, Liverpool to draw up club rules for the nascent reds. The first rule was “that the club be called Liverpool Football Club and shall play under the Rules of the Football Association”.

Thumping Spurs
2014 – We trounced Tottenham Hotspur 4-0 at Anfield to return to the top of the League for the first time since Christmas. Younes Kaboul turned in a Glen Johnson cross early on before Luis Suárez doubled our lead. Philippe Coutinho and Jordan Henderson both struck after the break.
1964 – We beat Spurs 3-1 at Anfield, with Ian St. John bagging a brace before the interval, with Alf Arrowsmith on target after the break.

Eventually successful semis
We have twice played Semi-finals on this day over the years.
1974 - We drew 0-0 with Leicester City in the FA Cup at Old Trafford, before winning the replay 3-1 at Villa Park four days later. Kevin Keegan had two efforts cleared off the line and also hit the post.
1976 - We won 1-0 at the Camp Nou in our UEFA Cup Semi-final first leg, with John Toshack grabbing the only goal as we dominated the match from the start, despite Barca’s line-up including the Dutch maestros Johan Cruyff and Johan Neeskens. This was Barcelona’s first home defeat by English opposition in European competition and thousands of home fans vented their frustration during the second half by hurling seat cushions onto the pitch, holding up the game for a while. A 1-1 draw at Anfield took us through to the final against Club Brugge.

A failed semi
1899 - We lost out in our second FA Cup Semi-final in three years, losing 1-0 to eventual winners Sheffield United in a second replay at the Baseball Ground. Left-half Bill Goldie was charged with “discourteous language” after the game and was subsequently banned for the last three games of the season, when we were competing for the title. The FA’s disciplinary committee had to employ an interpreter to understand his very strong Scottish accent!
1923 - We played the Blades again, with Harry Chambers on target twice in a 2-1 First Division win at Anfield. Billy Gillespie struck one of his seven goals against the reds.

Vlad on fire
2002 - Vladimír Šmicer’s second goal in consecutive reds games and a Michael Owen tap-in from a Šmicer cross gave us a 2-0 home League win over Charlton Athletic, moving us back to the top of the table. Vlad became our fastest ever goalscoring substitute, having netted just four minutes after entering the fray as an early replacement for the injured Emile Heskey.

Beaten by the R’s
1991 - We lost at home to Queens Park Rangers for the only time to date, under the temporary charge of Ronnie Moran, with Les Ferdinand heading in his seventh goal in as many games to put them in front, the first of his six goals past us. Roy Wegerle pounced on a slack Steve Staunton back-pass to double their half-time lead. Jan Mølby converted a spot-kick before Peter Beardsley struck a post, but substitute Clive Wilson scored with his first touch to make the final score 3-1.

A memorable day for Mr Walker
1898 - We paid Hearts £350 in total for Scottish international winger Tom Robertson and inside-right Johnny Walker, who had both just helped their side to claim the League title, both then repeating the feat south of the border. Robertson netted 34 goals in 141 reds outings, returning to Hearts in May 1902 while Walker famously scored the goal that clinched our first League title in 1901, bagging 31 goals in 120 outings before moving to Rangers in 1902.
1895 - Walker won his first full international cap, grabbing a brace as Scotland beat Ireland 3-1 in the British International Championships at Celtic Park.

First and last strikes
1934 – Forward Tosh Johnson grabbed his first reds goal in our 2-2 top-flight draw with Huddersfield Town at Anfield, with Alf Hanson also on target. Charlie Luke bagged two of his four goals past us.
1982 – Terry McDermott bagged his 81st and final goal for the club as we beat Birmingham City 3-1 at Anfield. Ian Rush had already netted twice, with Mick Harford scoring the first of his seven goals past us late on.

Trebles galore
We have registered several trebles in Wartime League football on this day in history.
1946 - Cyril Done scored a hat-trick in a 5-2 win at Middlesbrough, with Jack Balmer and Willie Fagan also on target.
1918 - Thomas Bennett struck four times with Thomas Green adding three as we thumped Southport Central 8-0 at their Ash Lane ground. George Schofield added the final goal.

Births and death
1990 - Hungarian forward András Simon was born in Salgotarjan. He arrived from MTK Hungária in a joint £1m three-year deal with his compatriot Krisztián Németh in July 2007. He failed to make the first team before returning to his native land.
1990 - Right-back Emmanuel Mendy was born in Medina Gounass, Senegal. He joined the reds from Real Murcia on a three-year deal in July 2008, but was released four years later.
1958 - Joe Keetley died. He signed from Accrington Stanley in November 1923 for £1,200 and struck twice in nine reds games before moving to Wolverhampton Wanderers in May 1925. He went through three League clubs in eight months after leaving Anfield before moving into non-League football.

Red milestones
1959 – Jimmy Melia netted a brace in his hundredth game for the club as we won a Second Division encounter 2-0 at Barnsley, with half-back Johnny Wheeler reaching a century of League outings for us.
2005 - Jerzy Dudek won his fiftieth cap for Poland as they beat Northern Ireland 1-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Warsaw.

International scorers
1977 - Kevin Keegan bagged his final England goal as a reds player, with Ray Kennedy also on target as they thumped Luxembourg 5-0 in a World Cup qualifier at Wembley. Ray Clemence and Emlyn Hughes also played. Steve Heighway and Joey Jones both also represented their countries on the same day.
1983 - Future red John Wark netted in Scotland’s 2-2 European Championships qualifying draw with Switzerland at Hampden Park. Kenny Dalglish, Alan Hansen and Graeme Souness all also played. Meanwhile, Sammy Lee and Phil Neal featured in England’s goalless draw with Greece at Wembley, as they also bid to qualify for the Finals in France.

International bows
1993 - Stig Inge Bjørnebye won his first cap as a reds player as Norway thumped Qatar 6-1 in a friendly in Doha. Future clubmate Øyvind Leonhardsen also played with Steve McManaman also in international action.
2004 – Future red James Milner made the first of his record 46 appearances for England Under-21’s, his only one while with Leeds United, as they drew 2-2 with Sweden in a friendly in Kristianstad. Future red David Martin made his debut for England Under-19’s in their 1-1 draw in Germany. Robbie Foy, David Raven, Mark Smyth, future reds Scott Carson, Stewart Downing, Raul Meireles and Daniel Sjölund also featured for their countries.

Eight goal thriller
1960 - We led Aston Villa 4-0 with just 24 minutes remaining of our Second Division fixture at Villa Park thanks to a brace from Dave Hickson and goals from Roger Hunt and right-back John Molyneux, his third and last reds goal. However, the home side struck three times inside nine minutes, and Bobby Thomson grabbed his second goal to equalise with five minutes remaining. Peter McParland, who had already scored, as in the earlier meeting at Anfield that season, missed a clear-cut chance in the last minute that nearly completed an amazing comeback for the Villains, who went on to claim the title that season. Villa’s other goal came from Stan Lynn’s spot-kick.
1907 - We were thumped 4-0 in another top-flight meeting there, with four first-team regulars missing. Harry Hampton bagged one of his fifteen strikes against the reds, while Albert Hall bagged a brace with Fred Chapple also on target. Forward John Lipsham played his third and last game for us.

Red ending
1895 – Outside-right Neil Kerr played his twelfth and final reds game as we beat The Wednesday 4-2 at Anfield, with Frank Becton and Harry Bradshaw each bagging a brace.

Signing on
2011 – Brazilian midfielder Lucas Leiva signed a new contract until 2015, later further extended. He bagged seven goals in 346 reds games, growing to become a firm fans’ favourite before being sold to S.S. Lazio for £5m in July 2017.
1898 – Winger Tommy Robertson and inside-right Johnny Walker both arrived from Heart Of Midlothian for a combined £175. They both helped us to claim our first League title in 1901, with Robertson netting 35 times in 141 games before returning to Hearts in May 1902. Walker scored thirty goals in 120 outings, moving on to Rangers at the same time as Robertson’s departure.

Semi at Anfield
1912 – The third of five FA Cup Semi-finals to be staged at Anfield took place, with losing Finalists West Bromwich Albion sharing a goalless draw with Blackburn Rovers.

2021 – Diogo Jota scored for Portugal as they won a World Cup qualifier 3-1 in Luxembourg, while Takumi Minamino struck as Japan thrashed Mongolia 14-0 in another qualifier in Chiba and Gini Wijnaldum netted while captaining the Netherlands to a 7-0 win in Gibraltar. Ex-red Christian Benteke was on target as Belgium thumped Belarus 8-0 in Leuven. Marko Grujić, Ozan Kabak, Sadio Mané, Neco Williams, Harry Wilson, future reds Wataru Endō and Ryan Gravenberch, and ex-reds Ryan Babel, Simon Mignolet and Danny Ward also played for their countries that day.
2012 – Future red Mohamed Salah netted as Egypt beat Uganda 2-1 in a friendly in Sudan.
2005 - Steven Gerrard and Milan Baroš both struck in World Cup qualifiers. Ex-red Michael Owen and future red Joe Cole also featured in England’s 2-0 defeat of Azerbaijan at St. James’ Park, with Owen skippering the side for part of the game. Baroš also won a penalty and set up another goal as the Czech Republic won 4-0 in Andorra. On the same day, future red Andriy Voronin grabbed his first goal as a Bayer 04 Leverkusen player, the only goal of Ukraine’s qualifier against future red Christian Poulsen’s Denmark in Kyiv.

2006 – Future red Maxi Rodríguez netted as Argentina beat Angola 2-0 in a friendly in Italy.
2004 - Future reds winger Mark González was on target as Chile won a World Cup qualifier 2-0 in Bolivia. On the same day, Harry Kewell and future red Daniel Agger played for their countries.
2005 - González also played for his country, winning his final cap before making the switch to Anfield, as Chile lost 2-1 in Paraguay in another qualifier.

KHR in charge
2000 – Karl-Heinz Riedle was appointed Manager of Fulham. He was in charge for the rest of the season, with Jean Tigana replacing him that summer.

Final caps
1901 – Ex-reds half-back Barney Battles won his third and final cap for Scotland as they drew 2-2 with England in the British International Championships at Crystal Palace, with Alex Raisbeck also in action for the away side.
2017 – Ryan Gravenberch made his fourth and last appearance for the Dutch Under-15’s as they beat Belgium 2-1, with fellow future red Ki-Jana Hoever also featuring.
2021 – Future red Cody Gakpo bagged a brace while winning his thirteenth and last Under-21’s cap as the Netherlands thumped Hungary 6-1 in the European Championships Finals in Székesfehérvár.

2005 - Alou Diarra won his third and final cap as a reds player in France’s 1-1 World Cup qualifying draw in Israel, with future red Yossi Benayoun featuring for the home side. Meanwhile, Jan Kromkamp won his fourth and last cap as an AZ Alkmaar player as the Netherlands beat Armenia 2-0 in Eindhoven, with future reds Ryan Babel and Dirk Kuyt also featuring. On the same day, Craig Bellamy won his last cap as a Newcastle United player, and 33rd to date, although he was on loan at Celtic at the time, as John Toshack’s Wales lost a World Cup qualifier 1-0 in Austria. John Arne Riise and future reds Philipp Degen, Ragnar Klavan, Sotirios Kyrgiakos, Javier Mascherano and Fernando Torres also played for their countries that day.

Two ton up for the Irish
1983 - Mark Lawrenson, Ronnie Whelan and future red Michael Robinson all played in the Republic of Ireland’s 1-0 European Championships qualifying win in Malta. It was Ireland’s 200th full international match, while Robinson was winning his final cap as a Brighton & Hove Albion player.

International treble
2006 - Future reds reserves forward Krisztián Németh bagged a hat-trick as Hungary Under-17’s thumped Sweden 4-0 in the Elite Round of European Championships qualifiers in Portugal.
2009 – Tom Ince played in another qualifier at the same level as England won 2-0 in Hungary.
2015 - Future red Danny Ings faced Emre Can as England Under-21’s beat Germany 3-2 at the Riverside Stadium, with ex-red Carl Medjani and future red Kostas Tsimikas also in international action on the same day.

1994 – Future red Paul Ince headed in the only goal of our trip to Manchester United.
1970 – Chris Lawler was on target as we won 1-0 at Wolverhampton Wanderers, with Tommy Smith having a penalty saved.
1968 – We drew an FA Cup Sixth Round replay 0-0 at West Bromwich Albion.
1963 – Roger Hunt bagged the only goal of West Ham United’s visit to Anfield in a Sixth Round tie.

1957 – We drew 3-3 at Lincoln City in the Second Division. Brian Jackson struck twice, with Tony Rowley also on the scoresheet.
1956 – We lost 1-0 at Doncaster Rovers in another Second Division fixture played on Good Friday, with the game marred by some crowd disturbances.
1935 – We lost 3-1 at Leicester City as Danny Liddle bagged the last of his four goals against the reds and Arthur Maw also scoring before the break. Taffy O’Callaghan also netted before Tommy Johnson struck our late consolation.

1929 – We drew 0-0 at Bolton Wanderers.
1912 – We lost 2-1 at Preston North End despite Sam Gilligan giving us an early lead.
1903 – Sunderland held us to a 1-1 draw in L4. George Bridgett bagged the first of his five goals past us, with Sam Raybould nabbing our goal.
1901 – We beat Newcastle United 3-0 at Anfield. John Hunter struck twice with Sam Raybould also scoring.
