Red trebles
2020 – Diogo Jota bagged a treble, scoring in his fourth consecutive game as we thrashed Atalanta 5-0 in their Stadio di Bergamo behind closed doors. Mohammed Salah and Sadio Mané were also on target.

1956 - Half-back Johnny Wheeler scored a quick-fire hat-trick to hand us a 4-1 Second Division win over Port Vale, with his goals coming between the 81st and 85th minutes. Billy Liddell scored our other goal.
1945 - Forward Willie Fagan bagged all the goals in our 3-0 Wartime League defeat of Newcastle United.
1951 - We also faced the Geordies, with Jimmy Payne netting in our 1-1 top-flight draw at St. James’ Park as Billy Liddell reached 200 League games for the reds.

Willie’s debut
1962 - Half-back Willie Stevenson made his reds bow as we lost 2-1 at home to Burnley. Ian St. John netted our consolation. Andy Lochhead struck the first of his four goals against the reds, with Ray Pointer also on target.
1894 - We entertained the Clarets for the first time in another First Division fixture, although we lost this encounter 3-0. Right-back John Curran made his debut in this game, with centre-forward Hugh Henderson featuring for the second and last time.

25 in a row
2021 – We played in a joint club record 25th consecutive game unbeaten in all competitions as we beat Club Atlético de Madrid 2-0 in our UEFA Champions League group encounter at Anfield, as we qualified for the nock-out stages with two games to spare. We then lost at West Ham United four days later. Felipe was sent off for the visitors during the first half after Diogo Jota and Sadio Mané had struck. Jota and ex-red Luis Suarez both later had goals ruled out by VAR for offside as Mohamed Salah reached a half century of European outings for the reds.

Three off in Spain
1998 - Paul Ince, Steve McManaman and Valencia’s Amadeo Carboni were all sent off very late on as we escaped from the Mestalla with a 2-2 draw in our UEFA Cup encounter. We progressed to the Third Round on the away goals rule, thanks to a Steve McManaman header and Patrik Berger strike after Claudio López gave the home side the lead in first-half stoppage time. However, we were pegged back by a very late equaliser when a López free-kick came back off the post and keeper David James for an own goal.

Wolves three times
We have faced Wolverhampton Wanderers three times on this day over the years, all in First Division games.
1900 - We lost 2-1 at Molineux, with inside-right Johnny Walker grabbing our consolation. Future reds right-winger George Bowen bagged a brace for Wolves.

However, we won both subsequent games at Anfield.
1934 - Dave Wright and Gordon Hodgson netted in our 2-1 win.
1979 - We triumphed 3-0 thanks to a Kenny Dalglish brace and a strike from Ray Kennedy, as Emlyn Hughes returned to Anfield for the first time since moving to Molineux. Wolves went on to finish sixth that season, while we retained our League title. Ray Clemence made his 400th League appearance for the reds in this game.

Moving towards European glory
1976 - We beat Turkish champions Trabzonspor 3-0 in our European Cup Second Round encounter, to overcome a 1-0 first leg defeat. Steve Heighway, David Johnson and Kevin Keegan all struck inside the first eighteen minutes. We also had three later efforts ruled out for offside, while the Turks had Milemic Cemil sent off late on for a horrendous challenge on Phil Neal. Our next opponents in the competition were Saint-Étienne the following March.

2004 - We were also victorious when we won 1-0 at Real Club Deportivo de La Coruña in the group stage of the Champions League thanks to a Jorge Andrade own goal, with Igor Bišcan running the midfield in the absence of Steven Gerrard. Keeper Chris Kirkland was briefly knocked unconscious by the clumsy Croatian during the second half.

The end of a European dream
1971 - Alun Evans netted his 33rd and last reds goal after legendary striker Gerd Müller had put Bayern München two goals up in a two-minute spell in our European Cup Winners’ Cup meeting in Germany as we eventually lost 3-1 to crash out at the Second Round stage, following an earlier goalless draw at Anfield with Uli Hoeneß also netting. This was our fourth meeting with the Munich side in continental competition that year. Alun’s wonder strike went on to win a German ‘goal of the month’ competition!

Off goes Brad
2000 - Brad Friedel signed for Blackburn Rovers on a free transfer, after making just 31 reds appearances in three years at Anfield.

Also recently

1973 – Tommy Smith walked out of Highbury half an hour before kick-off after being told he had been dropped and was subsequently dropped for five games. Emlyn Hughes and John Toshack both struck inside the final fifteen minutes as we beat Arsenal 2-0.

Disappointment against Rovers
2007 - We were held to a goalless draw at Blackburn Rovers, with Dirk Kuyt missing several good opportunities, and the home side twice striking the woodwork in the opening period.
1996 - We went down 3-0 at the same venue. Chris Sutton opened the scoring from the spot in the third minute, adding a second after the break, to reach seven goals against us, with Jason Wilcox having also netted in the first half, the last of his four strikes past the reds.

A thumping wartime win
1917 - Thomas Bennett and Arthur Metcalf bagged a brace each as we thumped Blackpool 6-0 in a Wartime League match at Bloomfield Road, with Walter Wadsworth and Jack Waine also on the scoresheet.

Beating the Mancs
1924 – We beat Manchester United 4-2 in a Lancashire Senior Cup Second Round replay, with Danny Shone and Dick Forshaw each netting twice. Left-back Donald McKinlay had to go in goal for twenty minutes while Elisha Scott was receiving treatment.
