Clinching the title 1982 - We claimed our thirteenth League title with a game remaining by beating Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 at Anfield, having been mid-table at Christmas. Ex-red Ray Clemence was in the Spurs goal, with Mark Lawrenson, Kenny Dalglish and Ronnie Whelan scoring past him after Glenn Hoddle had handed the visitors the lead with a glorious strike, one of his four against us. 1984 - Ian Rush was on target as we drew 1-1 with Norwich City, having won the League three days before at Notts County. Kenny Dalglish played his 400th reds game while Phil Neal appeared for us in the League for the 400th time. Quadruple farewell 2004 - Emile Heskey, Danny Murphy and Michael Owen all played their final first-class games for the reds. Owen struck the equaliser as we were held to a 1-1 draw by Newcastle United at Anfield, so finishing the season in fourth spot. This was also Gérard Houllier’s last game in charge, while Paul Harrison was on the bench for the first of thirteen times. Shola Ameobi netted for the visitors. 1989 – Scottish midfielder Kevin MacDonald left the reds for Coventry City after a number of loan spells away from Anfield while recovering from a broken leg. He had played 64 reds games, scoring five times, following his £400,000 capture from Leicester City in November 1984. He helped us to the League and FA Cup double in 1986, with skipper Alan Hansen calling him “far and away our most influential player.” Sammy returns 2008 – Sammy Lee returned to the club as Assistant Manager, having left the backroom staff in the summer of 2004 for a full-time post with England, before joining Bolton Wanderers. Forwards in and out 1935 - Jack Balmer signed as an amateur from Everton, turning professional three months later. He went on to score 110 times in 309 games, helping us to the League title in 1947. It was during that season that he netted hat-tricks in three consecutive games, a remarkable feat that has yet to be matched in English top-flight football. He also played in the FA Cup Final three years later. 1923 - Jack Sambrook moved on to Stockport County having played just twice after signing from Wolverhampton Wanderers in April 1922. Pepe the best again 2008 - Pepe Reina was awarded the Barclays Golden Glove Award for most clean sheets for the third successive season, having kept eighteen shut-outs in the League. Most recently 2011 – We lost 2-0 at home to Tottenham Hotspur to damage our hopes of qualifying for Europe. Spurs took an early lead when Rafael van der Vaart’s strike deflected in off Glen Johnson, with Luka Modrić converting a controversial second-half penalty. 2016 – We drew 1-1 at West Bromwich Albion, with winger Sergi Canos making his only senior reds appearance. Midfielder Cameron Brannagan, winger Jordon Ibe, centre-half Martin Škrtel and left-back Brad Smith all played their last games for the club. Ibe struck our goal as we finished the League season in eighth, our joint lowest placing since returning to the top flight in 1962. This game came just three days before the UEFA Europa League Final against Sevilla in Basel. 2023 – We won 3-0 at Leicester City as Curtis Jones bagged a first-half brace. Trent Alexander-Arnold added the third, with Mohamed Salah assisting all three goals. Happy birthdays 1981 – Left-back Paul Konchesky was born in Barking. Roy Hodgson paid £3.5m for him on transfer deadline day in August 2010, as well as transferring Lauri Dalla Valle and Alex Kačaniklić to Fulham as part of the deal, who were valued at a combined £1.5m. He made eighteen reds appearances without scoring, being sold to Leicester City in July 2011 for £1.5m after spending the second half of the season on loan at Nottingham Forest. 1901 - Forward Jimmy Walsh was born in Stockport. He signed from his hometown club in May 1922 and netted a brace on his reds bow, bagging a total of 27 goals in his 77 reds games before joining Hull City in June 1928. 1985 - Former reserves centre-back Carl Medjani was born in Lyon. The highly-rated Frenchman signed from Saint-Étienne on a free transfer in August 2003 but failed to break through into the senior squad, moving back to France to join Lorient in July 2006 after a loan spell there. 1976 – Winger Mark Kennedy was born in Dublin. He signed from Millwall for £1.5m in March 1995 but only played 21 times for us, before being sold to Wimbledon for £1.75m three years later. 1979 - Forward Sean Friars was born in Derry. He never made our first team, moving on to Ipswich Town in 1998. Last game before Istanbul 2005 - Argentinean centre-back Mauricio Pellegrino played his thirteenth and final reds game as we beat Aston Villa 2-1 at Anfield in our final League game of the season, to finish behind our neighbours in fifth. Djibril Cissé struck a brace, including a penalty, with Gareth Barry on target for the Villains with the first of his four goals against the reds to date. Igor Bišcan also made his final reds outing as he played his 118th reds game, with Dietmar Hamann turning out for the reds on the 250th occasion. Midfielder Antonio Núñez also appeared for the last time, just his 27th outing. International debutants 1946 - Billy Liddell made his international bow as Scotland beat Switzerland 3-1 in a Victory International at Hampden Park. 1955 - He also played for his country as they drew a friendly 2-2 in Yugoslavia. Future red Tommy Younger was in the Scots’ goal that day. 2008 - Jack Hobbs won his first cap for England Under-19’s, playing alongside clubmate Adam Hammill as they lost 2-0 to Russia in a European Championships qualifier in Walsall. 2009 – Christopher Buchtmann played for Germany Under-17’s as they reached the Final of the European Championships by beating Italy 2-0 in Dessau. Double trebles 1946 - Jack Balmer bagged four goals and Cyril Done scored a hat-trick as we thumped Baltimore All Stars 9-0 in an end-of-season friendly at the Municipal Stadium in Baltimore. Willie Fagan added a brace. 1943 - Jack Balmer also struck three times as we drew the second leg of the Lancashire Cup Final 3-3 with Manchester United at Maine Road, to lose 6-4 on aggregate. Holding on 1920 – We retained the Lancashire Senior Cup, sharing the trophy after the Final at Anfield ended 1-1 after extra time against Manchester United. Tom Miller scored for the reds. King Kenny against Clem 1976 - Kenny Dalglish scored through the legs of his future clubmate Ray Clemence as Scotland beat England 2-1 in the British International Championships at Hampden Park. Kevin Keegan, Ray Kennedy and Phil Thompson all also played. Sami in charge 2012 - Sami Hyypiä was appointed Team Manager of Bayer 04 Leverkusen on a permanent basis after a successful temporary period in charge. He stayed in charge until being sacked in April 2014. A busy day 2002 - Danny Murphy signed a new five-year contract. Meanwhile, Stéphane Henchoz was named Swiss Player of the Year, for the second consecutive season. On the same day, our Under-19’s won 3-2 at Highbury in the second leg of the FA Premier Academy League Play-Off Final, but it was not enough to overturn a 5-1 first leg defeat. Also, ex-red Mike Marsh signed for Accrington Stanley from Boston United on a free transfer. He spent one season there, helping them to the UniBond Premier League, and promotion to the Conference, before becoming Manager at Burscough, back in the UniBond. Tosh for Wales 1971 - John Toshack won his first cap as a red, and ninth in total, as Wales were held to a goalless draw by Scotland in the British International Championships in Cardiff, with future red Peter Cormack featuring for the Scots. 1973 - He also turned out for the Welsh in the same competition, as they lost 3-0 to England at Wembley. Clubmate Emlyn Hughes was on the winning side that day. 1974 - Crazy Horse also featured for England, skippering them to a 1-0 defeat of Northern Ireland at Wembley in the same competition, with Kevin Keegan also playing. At Hampden 2002 - Ex-red Steve McManaman and future red Fernando Morientes both played in the UEFA Champions League Final for Real Madrid as they beat Bayer 04 Leverkusen 2-1 at Hampden Park. Dan’s happy day 2010 – Centre-half Daniel Agger married Sophie Nelson in Hvidovre in his native Denmark. Internationals on target 2019 – Future red Darwin Núñez struck for Uruguay Under-20’s beat Spain 2-1 in a friendly in Poland. 2011 – Samed Yeşil netted as Germany Under-17’s lost 5-2 to the Netherlands in the European Championships Final in Serbia, with fellow future red Emre Can also playing. 1983 – Future reds centre-half Glenn Hysén scored as Sweden thumped Cyprus 5-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Malmö. In and out 2006 - Ex-reds reserves forward Jon Newby was released by Bury, after five goals in 51 appearances in his second spell at Gigg Lane. On the same day, centre-half James Smith singed pro terms with the reds. His solitary senior appearance was in a League Cup tie at Reading in October 2006, moving on to Stockport County in December 2007 on a free transfer, after a successful loan spell. Marina honoured 2009 - Kenny Dalglish’s wife Marina was awarded the Citizens of Honour award by Liverpool’s Lord Mayor, which was collected on her behalf by Kenny as she was ill. Finishing third 1968 – We ended the season with a 2-1 loss at Stoke City to finish in third place. Roger Hunt struck after Peter Dobing had netted the last of eight goals against the reds, with John Mahoney bagging the winner. Also in international action 1929 – Future reds Ernie Blenkinsop and Tom Cooper both played for England as they lost a friendly 4-3 to Spain in Madrid. 1937 - Andy Beattie represented Scotland as they beat Czechoslovakia 3-1 in a friendly in Prague. He guested with the reds during the war, and later joined the backroom staff at Anfield after a successful management career. 1949 - Ray Lambert featured for Wales as they lost a friendly 3-2 in Portugal. 1990 – John Barnes and Steve McMahon played for England as they beat Denmark 1-0 in a friendly at Wembley, with Jim Magilton appearing for Northern Ireland Under-23’s in their 3-2 defeat by the Republic of Ireland in Portadown. 2002 – Stéphane Henchoz played for Switzerland in their 3-1 friendly defeat by Canada in St. Gallen. 2014 – Future red Joe Gomez featured as England Under-17’s lost 2-0 to the Netherlands in a European Championships Finals group game in Malta. 2016 – Ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper took charge of England Under-17’s as they lost 1-0 to Spain in the European Championships Quarter-final in Azerbaijan.

A Real thumping 2009 - We thrashed Real Madrid 4-0 at Anfield to reach the Quarter-finals of the Champions League 5-0 on aggregate. Steven Gerrard played his hundredth game in Europe, while Xabi Alonso was making his 200th reds appearance. Fernando Torres opened the scoring before Gerrard converted a penalty prior to the break. The skipper added his second before the night was rounded off by Andrea Dossena bagging the first of his two, equally memorable reds strikes. Pepe Reina played his fiftieth game in Europe for the club. In comes Emile 2000 - Emile Heskey joined the reds from Leicester City for a then club record transfer fee of £10.5 million. The big front man scored sixty goals in 223 reds appearances, helping us to claim the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, two League Cups and FA Charity Shield before moving to Birmingham City in May 2004 for a fee of up to £6.25m. On the same day, Michael Foley played for the Republic of Ireland Under-16’s as they lost 2-1 to Yugoslavia in a Belgium Tournament game. 1938 – Forward Ron Jones signed from Wrexham, scoring once in five outings before the war intervened. He returned to Wrexham in peacetime. 1904 – Forward James Garside signed from Accrington Stanley, but only played five times without scoring before returning to Stanley in May 1906. Wark walks in 1984 - John Wark signed from Ipswich Town for £450,000 He struck an impressive 42 times in his 108 games for the reds. He left Anfield in January 1988 for £100,000 to return to Portman Road. Carra’s 500 2013 – Jamie Carragher played his 500th League game as we beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 at Anfield. Luis Suárez opened the scoring with his fiftieth reds strike, before centre-back Jan Vertonghen bagged a brace to put the visitors in front. Stewart Downing netted his seventh and last reds goal following a wayward back-pass before Steven Gerrard converted a spot-kick awarded after Suárez was fouled. 1984 – We beat Spurs 3-1 at Anfield, with Kenny Dalglish and Ronnie Whelan both netting just before half time. Sammy Lee added the third late on as left-back Alan Kennedy reached 200 League games with the reds. 1951 – Billy Liddell played his 200th reds game as we drew 1-1 at Middlesbrough, bagging our late equaliser. 1920 – Left-back Donald McKinlay reached a century of League games for the reds as we beat The Wednesday 1-0 at Anfield thanks to a goal from Harry Chambers. 4-3 again 1997 - We secured our second successive 4-3 League win over Newcastle United at Anfield, with Robbie Fowler nabbing his second in the last minute, after we had led 3-0 going into the final twenty minutes before Keith Gillespie, Faustino Asprilla and Warren Barton drew the Geordies level. Steve McManaman and Patrik Berger also scored for the reds. Jamie Redknapp remembers this game as his favourite from his reds career. Most recently in Europe 2016 – We beat Manchester United 2-0 in the first leg of our UEFA Europa League Round of 16 tie at Anfield. Daniel Sturridge converted a penalty after Nathaniel Clyne was brought down in the box, with Roberto Firmino also on target. We went on to reach the Final in Basel that season. 2021 – Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané struck as we beat RasenBallsport Leipzig e.V. 2-0 in the second leg of our UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie in Budapest to progress 4-0 on aggregate. New stand 1973 – The present-day Main Stand was officially opened by the Duke of Kent, prior to our 3-2 top-flight defeat of Southampton. Future Saint Kevin Keegan bagged a brace after Larry Lloyd had opened the scoring. Mick Channon bagged one of his seven goals against the reds, with Paul Gilchrist also on target. Red birthdays 1986 - Centre-half Danny O’Donnell was born in Rainford, St. Helens. He moved up to Melwood from the Academy full-time in the summer of 2005, having skippered the Under-18’s during 2004/05. He joined Crewe Alexandra in June 2007 after a season-long loan. 1985 - Former reserves defender and England Under-19’s skipper David Raven was born in West Kirby, Wirral. He made four first-team appearances but left Anfield to sign for Carlisle United in July 2006. 1926 - Right-winger Jimmy Payne was born in Bootle. He notched 43 times in 243 appearances for the reds, including the 1950 FA Cup Final, before moving across Stanley Park in April 1956, where he was dogged by injury before retiring to become a newsagent. 1924 – Defender Fred Finney was born in Prescot. He signed on as an amateur in August 1941, but played just two senior reds games, both in the space of a week against Chester in January 1946. 1899 – Forward Jack Sambrook was born in Wednesfield. He played just twice after signing from Wolverhampton Wanderers in April 1922, moving on to Stockport County in May 1923. 1897 – Welsh centre-half Billy Matthews was born in Plas Bennion. After eight goals in thirteen Wartime reds games, he signed on from Colwyn Bay in 1918, netting four times in nine senior outings before joining Bristol City in March 1922. Reds hat-tricks galore We have scored three hat-tricks on this day. 1985 - Ian Rush netted a treble in an FA Cup Sixth Round tie at Barnsley, taking him to seven goals in that season’s competition. Ronnie Whelan also scored in a 4-0 win. Unfortunately, we lost out to eventual winners Manchester United in the Semi-final that year. 1971 - Alun Evans bagged a hat-trick, our first in Europe, in his first full match after a cartilage operation as we beat Bayern München 3-0 in our Fairs Cup Fourth Round first leg tie. 1906 - Sam Raybould scored our first cup treble as we beat Southampton 3-0 in the FA Cup Fourth Round. We were then knocked out by Everton in the Semi-final, who went on to claim the cup. Gordon off the mark 1926 – Legendary forward Gordon Hodgson struck the first two of his 241 reds goals as we drew 3-3 at Manchester United. Dick Forshaw also netted, with Elisha Scott saving a penalty from Charlie Rennox, who also scored. Joseph Spence struck the first of his five goals past us, with Jim Hanson also on target. 2018 – We lost 2-1 at Old Trafford as Marcus Rashford bagged an early brace, the first of his six goals past us to date. We pulled a goal back after the break when Eric Bailly turned a Sadio Mané cross past his own keep. Another memorable trip to Oakwell 1956 - Oakwell was also the setting for centre-half Dick White’s reds debut as we trounced Barnsley 5-0 in a Second Division game, our biggest ever defeat of the Tykes. Eric Anderson and Billy Liddell both bagged braces, with Liddell reaching 150 League goals for the reds. Joe Dickson was also on target. A treble against 1913 - Johnny Orr netted the last three of his five strikes past us as Blackburn Rovers thumped us 5-1 at Ewood Park, with Donald McKinlay grabbing our consolation. Danny Shea struck the first two of his ten goals against the reds. We have lost twice more in First Division fixtures at Ewood Park on this day in history. 1928 - Dick Edmed converted a spot-kick as we lost 2-1. Tommy McLean and Jack Roscamp were on target for the home side with half-back Neil McBain debuting for the reds. 1934 - Gordon Hodgson netted as we were beaten 3-1. Ted Harper and Tommy McLean each netted the last of their five goals past us with Thomas Brennan also on the scoresheet as left-half Jimmy McDougall played his 200th League game for the reds. Christian’s farewell 2011 – Christian Poulsen made his 21st and final reds appearance as we lost our UEFA Europa League Round of 16 first leg 1-0 at Sporting Clube de Braga, with Sotirios Kyrgiakos conceding a penalty that was converted by Alan. Skipper Jamie Carragher played his 138th European game, passing Ryan Giggs’ British record of 137 games. Substitute Andy Carroll had to wear the number 29 shirt as Fernando Torres had previously worn nine in the competition. On our way to Wembley 1965 - Roger Hunt struck the only goal of our FA Cup Sixth Round replay against Leicester City at Anfield. 1996 - We held Leeds United to a goalless draw at Elland Road in another Sixth Round tie. Knocking out the holders 1979 - We beat FA Cup holders Ipswich Town in the Sixth Round, with Kenny Dalglish grabbing the only goal of the game. We reached the Semi-final that season, only to lose out to Manchester United after a replay. Also recently 2019 - Sadio Mané scored his fiftieth reds goal as we came from behind early on to beat Burnley 4-2 at Anfield. Roberto Firmino bagged a brace, with Mané’s second goal coming in stoppage time to complete his half century in the wind and hail. This result left us a point behind Manchester City with eight League games remaining, as we ended the season on a mammoth 97 points. 2012 – Nicklas Bendtner bagged the only goal of the game at Sunderland after Fraizer Campbell’s shot from distance had rebounded off a post, Pepe Reina’s head and then the post again. Mixed fortunes against the Gunners We have twice played Arsenal at Highbury in the top-flight on this day, exactly fifty years apart. 1937 - We lost 1-0 there with Alf Kirchen netting one of his four goals against the reds. 1987 - Ian Rush grabbed the only goal of the game. Spot-kick despair 1993 – Mike Marsh had a penalty saved by Queens Park Rangers keeper Tony Roberts before Ian Rush headed the only goal of our Premier League game at Anfield. John Barnes then struck a second spot-kick wide. On the same day, future reds keeper Brad Friedel played for the USA as they held Hungary to a goalless draw in a Kirin Cup game in Japan. A treble for Dioufy 2001 - Future red El-Hadji Diouf netted a hat-trick for Senegal as they thumped Namibia 4-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Dakar, with fellow future red Salif Diao also in the side. On the same day, future reds Alberto Aquilani and Kolo Touré also played for their countries. First and last caps 2023 – Trent Kone-Doherty made his sixth and last appearance for the Republic of Ireland Under-17’s in their 3-0 defeat of Ukraine in a European Championships qualifier in Cyprus. 1976 - Phil Thompson and future red David Johnson both won their final caps for England Under-23’s as they lost 3-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Hungary. Newcastle United’s Alan Kennedy also played. 1888 – Future reds right-back Andrew Hannah won his only Scotland cap as they thumped Wales 5-1 in the British International Championships at Easter Road. Gillespie heads south 1978 - Future reds defender Gary Gillespie signed for Coventry City from Falkirk for £75,000. He stayed at Highfield Road until his move to Anfield in July 1983, making over 200 appearances for the Sky Blues. In and out of City 2005 - Kevin Keegan resigned as Manager of Manchester City after nearly four years in charge during which he led them to the First Division title and top-flight safety. 1994 - Paul Walsh joined the Sky Blues from Portsmouth for £750,000. He netted nineteen times in 62 games before returning to Fratton Park for £500,000 in September 1995. Other reds games 1962 – We thumped Derby County 4-1 at Anfield in a Second Division fixture with Roger Hunt and Jimmy Melia both scoring twice. 1915 – We lost 3-2 at Bradford City with Arthur Metcalf and Fred Pagnam on target. Jimmy Marshall stuck the first of his five goals against us, with Oscar Fox and Jimmy McIlvenny also scoring. 1900 – We won 2-1 at Sheffield United thanks to goals from Sam Raybould and Charlie Satterthwaite. Keepers on the move 2006 - Scott Carson joined Sheffield Wednesday on loan. He played nine times for the Owls, keeping five clean sheets as he helped them to stay up in the Championship. 2004 - Ex-reds keeper Pegguy Arphexad joined Second Division Notts County on loan from Coventry City, making three appearances for the Magpies. Also in international action 1948 – Future red Sammy Smyth faced Cyril Sidlow as Wales beat Ireland 2-0 in the British International Championships in Wrexham. 1977 – Future red Avi Cohen played for Israel in their 2-0 defeat of Japan in a World Cup qualifier in Tel-Aviv. 1990 – Future red Jari Litmanen played for Finland as they lost a friendly 2-1 to the USA in Tampa. 2016 – Future red Ozan Kabak netted his fifth and final goal for Turkey Under-16’s as they won a friendly 3-1 in Croatia. 2017 – Rafael Camacho scored for Portugal Under-17’s as they beat Greece 4-0 in a European Championships qualifier.

Stanley’s treble 1996 - Stan Collymore scored a treble as we thumped Third Division Rochdale 7-0 at Anfield in our Third Round meeting, our only senior encounter to date. Substitute Ian Rush scored his 39th and final FA Cup goal for the reds, breaking Denis Law’s record with his 42nd in total. Jason McAteer grabbed his first reds goal with Robbie Fowler also getting on the scoresheet, to add to a Peter Valentine own goal as we progressed to the Final that year. Truth day 2007 - We lost 3-1 at home to Arsenal in the Third Round of the FA Cup, with the Kop staging an emotional protest at the start of the game against Kelvin Mackenzie and in support of the 96 who lost their lives at Hillsborough in 1989. Dirk Kuyt grabbed our goal after Tomáš Rosický had bagged a brace, with Thierry Henry rounding out the scoring with the last of his nine goals past us. Double trouble 2013 – Daniel Sturridge scored on his reds bow as we won 2-1 at Blue Square Bet Premier side Mansfield Town in the FA Cup Third Round, with Luis Suárez netting the winner with the inadvertent use of an arm, so getting on the scoresheet in a third consecutive reds game. Matt Green nabbed a late consolation for the Stags. Double off the mark 2012 - Stewart Downing and Jonjo Shelvey both struck their first goals for the club as we thumped Oldham Athletic 5-1 in an FA Cup Third Round tie at Anfield on our way to Wembley. Robbie Simpson put the visitors ahead, but Craig Bellamy equalised before Steven Gerrard converted a penalty on the stroke of time. Birthday boy Andy Carroll was also on target. More hat-tricks 1968 - Roger Hunt scored a 22-minute second-half treble as we beat West Bromwich Albion 4-1 in a League game at Anfield after Geoff Strong had opened the scoring. Bobby Hope had hit the bar with a Baggies penalty, but the referee ordered a re-take because Tommy Lawrence had moved off his line. Tony Brown scored from the second kick to level the game with one of his eight strikes past the reds. 1992 - John Barnes bagged a treble on his comeback from a five-month injury lay-off, including a last-minute penalty, as we won 4-0 at Rob Jones’ former club Crewe Alexandra in an FA Cup Third Round tie as we set off towards Wembley glory. This remains our most recent FA Cup hat-trick away from home, with Steve McManaman opening the scoring. This was one of just two victories we enjoyed in our green and white Adidas away kit. Carroll’s day 1989 – Centre-forward Andy Carroll was born in Gateshead. He signed from Newcastle United for a club record £35m on transfer deadline day in January 2011 after 33 goals in 91 games for his boyhood club, including one in their 3-1 defeat of the reds at St. James’ Park in December 2010. He struck eleven times in 58 reds games, moving to West Ham United for their club record £15.5m fee in June 2013 after spending the previous season on loan at Upton Park. 1998 – Keeper Shamal George was born in Wirral. He joined the reds in 2009, making his first appearance for the first-team in our friendly win at Huddersfield Town in July 2016, as an outfield player! He moved on to Colchester United in August 2020. 1940 – Welsh full-back Allan Jones was born in Flint. He signed as an amateur in April 1955, turning professional two years later. He played five times before moving to Brentford in August 1963. 1876 – Inside-right Andrew McCowie was born in Cambuslang, near Glasgow. He signed from Cambuslang Hibernian in October 1896, netting eleven times in 35 games before joining Woolwich Arsenal in May 1899. He signed from Watford for £7,000 in December 1953, playing fifty reds games before returning to Vicarage Road in July 1956. 2004 – Forward John Evans died. He was signed at the fourth attempt from Charlton Athletic in December 1953 for £12,500, but we suffered relegation in his first season at Anfield. He remained in charge until being sacked in September 2013. 1998 - Former reserves forward Paul Jewell was appointed Manager of Bradford City. He led them into the Premiership in his first full season, before resigning after keeping them up the following year. 2015 – Jewell was named Joint Assistant Manager of West Bromwich Albion. However, he quit just seven days later after being asked to take a pay cut. On the move 1995 - Ex-reserves winger John Jeffers joined Second Division Shrewsbury Town on loan from Port Vale. He played five games for the Shrews, netting once. 2011 – Keeper Tony Warner signed for Tranmere Rovers, playing 25 times until the end of that season. This was a club record, and a record in the top-flight until we reached 24 in July 2020. However, we were held to a 1-1 draw by Derby County in our next League match at Anfield. 1990 - We travelled to Selhurst Park, losing 1-0 with Mark Bright netting. Michael and Sami – best in the world 2001 - Michael Owen and Sami Hyypiä were named in L’Équipe’s World Team of the Year, after a highly successful year that resulted in the reds claiming five trophies. A record gate 2007 - We were held to a goalless draw at Manchester City, with the reds spurning several good chances. The game took place in front of the then record attendance at the City of Manchester Stadium of 47,321. Phil’s farewell 2017 - Philippe Coutinho played his final reds game as we beat Leicester City 2-1 at Anfield. Jamie Vardy opened the scoring early on with the most recent of his seven strikes past us, becoming the first Foxes player to net in five consecutive games against the reds. Mohamed Salah bagged a brace after the break to secure the victory. Births and deaths 2018 – Winger Peter Thompson died. He had netted 54 times in 416 reds games, helping us to win two League titles, our first FA Cup and the FA Charity Shield, having signed in August 1963 for £37,000 from Preston North End. He moved on to Bolton Wanderers for £18,000 in January 1974. 1873 - Centre-half Jim McBride was born in Renton, Dumbartonshire. He struck seven times in 56 games, helping us to the Second Division title in 1894 after signing from Renton in June 1892. He made his reds bow in our Carling Cup defeat at Arsenal in October 2009, making nine senior appearances without finding the back of the net before being sold to Blackpool in August 2012. 1973 – Forward Jack Sambrook died. He played just twice after signing from Wolverhampton Wanderers in April 1922, moving on to Stockport County in May 1923. Most recently 2022 – We beat Leicester City 2-1 at Anfield. We fell behind to an early Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall strike, but Wout Faes put through his own net twice before the break. Rushie fails 1989 - Ian Rush had a penalty saved by ex-red Bob Bolder as a John Barnes goal was enough to hand us victory at home to Charlton Athletic. In comes Harry 1930 - Harry Barkas signed from Gateshead for £1,500, for whom he had struck seven times in nineteen outings. He failed to score in five reds games, returning to Gateshead in 1932. Bush’s bow 1933 - Wing-half Tom Bush debuted as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by Wolverhampton Wanderers, with Alf Hanson grabbing our goal.
