Another treble for Gordon 1934 - Our best ever win on this day came when Gordon Hodgson netted a hat-trick in a 6-2 home League win over Middlesbrough, the fourteenth of his seventeen for the club. Sam English grabbed a brace, with Harold Taylor also on target and forward Tosh Johnson making his reds bow on the day he signed. Benny Yorston struck two of his five goals against the reds. Derby joy 1973 - Emlyn Hughes struck a brace in the final eight minutes to hand us a 2-0 win at Goodison Park. This helped give us the momentum to claim the League title that season, our first for seven

Martin born 1984 - Centre-back Martin Škrtel was born in Handlová. The tough Slovakian signed from Zenit St. Petersburg for £6.5m in January 2008 to become our most expensive defender to date. He notched eighteen goals in 320 games in total, including one in our Carling Cup win at Wembley in February 2012, moving on to Fenerbahçe SK for £5.5m in July 2016. Unfortunately, he also put through his own net a joint club record eight times. 2010 - He skippered the side for the first time as we were held to a goalless draw at Anfield by Utrecht in our final UEFA Europa League group game. Beating the Geordies 2007 - Steven Gerrard, Dirk Kuyt and Ryan Babel were all on target as we won 3-0 at Newcastle United, with the visiting fans taunting troubled Toon boss Sam Allardyce, whose days were numbered at the club. Fernando Torres missed a host of golden chances, with boss Rafael Benítez further riling the club’s American owners by choosing to wear a track-suit, following on from his repeated statements in a pre-match press conference that “as always I am focused on training and coaching my team”. On the same day, future reds striker Milan Jovanović played for Serbia in a 1-0 Eur

Aldo off 1989 - John Aldridge left for Real Sociedad for £1.1m after 63 goals in 104 reds games, to become their first non-Basque player. He was signed by ex-red John Toshack and struck 33 times in 63 games in two years before returning to Merseyside with Tranmere Rovers. Beating the Mancs 2008 – Albert Riera made his reds bow as we came from behind to beat Manchester United 2-1 at Anfield. The Doc is in 1976 – Ex-Blues forward David Johnson signed from Ipswich Town for a club record £200,000. He went on to win three League titles, European Cup, UEFA Super Cup and two FA Charity Shields, scoring 78 times in 213 reds games. He was the first player to score for both sides in Merseyside derbies, and returned to Goodison in August 1982 for £100,000. Most recently 2018 – Three reds made their debuts as we thumped West Ham United 4-0 in our season opener at Anfield – keeper Alisson Becker, Naby Keïta and Xherdan Shaqiri. Triple debutants 2007 - Ryan Babel, Fernando Torres and Andriy Voronin all made their first-class reds bows as a late Steven Gerrard free-kick secured a 2-1 win at Aston Villa in our opening League fixture. This ensured that we became the fourth team to pass a thousand points in the Premier League, reaching 1,002, and was the first ever live Premiership match shown on Setanta Sports. We had taken the lead through a Martin Laursen own goal before Jamie Carragher gave away a penalty that Gareth Barry converted, one of his four goals past us. Numero seis 2019 – We secured our sixth European Cup after defeating Tottenham Hotspur in the UEFA Champions League Final in Madrid. Mohamed Salah opened the scoring from the spot after just two minutes, with substitute Divock Origi making the game safe late on. This was the time we had played a first-class match in June in our history. In comes Brendan 2012 - Brendan Rodgers was appointed as reds boss. He had a mixed first season in charge, followed by a terrific second campaign as we came a close second in the League, before a disappointing third season. He led us to 85 victories in
