Rush scored one, Rush scored two
1983 - Ian Rush scored five goals, becoming the third of five reds to do so in one game, as we thumped fourth-placed Luton Town 6-0 at home in the League, with his hat-trick completed by the 36th minute and his last being his fiftieth in the League for us. This was particularly impressive considering that he had to take painkillers before the game for a niggling groin injury and had only been passed fit two hours before the game. Kenny Dalglish netted the other goal, his 99th in the League for the reds. Amazingly, Tony Woodcock grabbed five goals for Arsenal on the same day, in their 6-2 victory at Aston Villa.

He’s red, he’s white
2000 - Nick Barmby scored against Everton at the Anny Road end, before Kevin Campbell equalised with one of his four goals against the reds. We steamrollered our way to a 3-1 win in the second half, thanks to an Emile Heskey strike and a Patrik Berger penalty, after Vladimír Šmicer was felled by Thomas Gravesen, who was sent off.
1996 - Barmby arrived at Goodison from Middlesbrough for £5.75m. He went on to score 24 times in 133 games for the Toffees before moving across Stanley Park.

Milestone goals
2005 - Bolo Zenden scored his first reds goal as we beat West Ham United 2-0 at Anfield, with Xabi Alonso having opened the scoring.
We had twice previously beaten the Hammers on this day in history.
1973 - John Toshack bagged the only goal of our League Cup Second Round replay at Anfield.
1989 - Ian Rush and Peter Beardsley netted in a 2-0 win at Upton Park.

1938 – Huddersfield Town held us to a 3-3 draw in L4. Harman van den Berg scored his third and last reds goal after a minute, with Willie Fagan scoring from the spot and Jack Balmer also on target.

Happy birthdays
1866 - Keeper Ned Doig was born in Arbroath. He made 53 reds appearances after signing from Sunderland for £150 in August 1904, helping us to the Second Division title in his first season, and played on until April 1908, finishing as our oldest ever player aged 41 years and 165 days.
1993 – Midfielder Conor Thomas was born in Coventry. He joined the reds on loan in January 2011, playing and training with the reserves, as well as training with the first team, but returned to Coventry City after a hamstring injury.

Cup record
1892 - Our first ever home fixture in the FA Cup resulted in a 9-0 annihilation of Welsh side Newtown in the Second Qualifying Round, still our record win in the competition. Outside-right Tom Wyllie grabbed a hat-trick, with Malcolm McVean nabbing a brace and forward Jonathan Cameron, half-back John McCartney and outside-left Hugh McQueen all adding to an Andy Townsend own goal, the first we had ever benefited from. Matt and Hugh McQueen both made their reds bows, with McCartney bagging the first of his eight goals.

League Cup trebles
1985 – The transfer-listed Paul Walsh scored a hat-trick as we beat Brighton & Hove Albion 4-0 at home. Kenny Dalglish netted the other late on as Ronnie Whelan appeared for the 200th time.
1986 - Kenny was also on target when Steve McMahon scored his second League Cup hat-trick of the season in our 4-1 defeat of Leicester City at Anfield in another Third Round tie.

Most recently
2016 – We won 4-2 at Crystal Palace, twice taking the lead through Emre Can and Dejan Lovren before being pegged back by a James McArthur brace. Joël Matip nabbed his first reds goal to send us into the break ahead again, with Roberto Firmino completing the scoring. On the same day, Elijah Dixon-Bonner and Paul Glatzel played for England Under-16’s as they lost a friendly 3-0 to Russia in France.

2022 – Rodrigo Moreno opened the scoring for Leeds United at Anfield, with Mohamed Salah equalising. Crysencio Summerville bagged a late goal for the visitors as we lost 2-1.
2023 – We beat Nottingham Forest 3-0 in L4 as Diogo Jota and Darwin Núñez both struck before the break. Mohamed Salah completed the scoring in the second half. Luis Díaz missed the game as he dealt with the kidnap of his father.

Neill off again
2003 - Lucas Neill was sent off for Blackburn Rovers against the reds for the second time that season, as we won a League Cup Third Round game 4-3 at Ewood Park. Emile Heskey missed a penalty that would have completed his hat-trick, with the score at 3-1. Danny Murphy had already scored from the spot, with Harry Kewell also on target. Dwight Yorke struck twice for the home side, the last of his eight goals past us, with Barry Ferguson also on the scoresheet.
1927 - We also beat Rovers 4-2 in a First Division meeting at Anfield when Tommy Reid netted twice, while Willie Devlin and Gordon Hodgson also got on the scoresheet. Syd Puddefoot struck two of his six strikes against the reds.

Luis nominated
2013 - Luis Suárez was nominated for the FIFA Ballon d’Or, although the prize was eventually claimed by Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo. On the same day, Jordan Rossiter won his second and last cap for England Under-17’s as they thrashed the Republic of Ireland 6-0 in a European Championships 1ualifier in Armenia, with Sheyi Ojo and future reds Joe Gomez and Dominic Solanke also featuring.

Jermaine at last
2008 – Steven Gerrard struck the only goal of the game from the spot after Papa Bouba Diop’s inexplicable handball. Portsmouth left Anfield with no points after Tony Adams’ first game as Pompey boss, with Jermaine Pennant playing his 81st and final reds game.

Chorlton’s first
1904 - We trounced Grimsby Town 5-0 in a Second Division encounter, with Tom Chorlton and Sam Raybould each nabbing a brace and Robbie Robinson also on the scoresheet. These were Chorlton’s first reds goals.

Tosh quits
1983 - John Toshack resigned as Manager of Swansea City after 250 games in charge. He returned to Vetch Field just two months later for a second, brief spell.

Derby Cup glory
1958 - We won 3-2 at Goodison to clinch the Floodlight Challenge Cup for the first of three times, having won the first leg 2-1 at Anfield.

1921 – Inside-forward Harry Lewis was on target as we were held 1-1, bagging his twelfth and final goal for the club.
1910 - Jack Parkinson missed a penalty as we lost 2-1, with forward Joseph Brough nabbing our consolation. This was his third and final reds strike, while defender Tom Chorlton was making his 121st and final appearance. Billy Minter struck the first of his five goals past us, with Percy Humphreys nabbing the last of his six.

2011 – Centre-half pairing Daniel Agger and Martin Škrtel each reached a century of League games for the club in our 2-0 win at West Bromwich Albion. Charlie Adam netted his second and final reds goal from the spot after Luis Suárez was felled, with Andy Carroll on target in first-half stoppage time.
1932 – Right-back Bob Done played his hundredth reds game as we drew 1-1 at Manchester City, with Archie McPherson bagging his nineteenth and final reds goal and Bobby Marshall bagging one of his five strikes against the reds.
1960 – Jimmy Harrower scored from the spot as Sunderland drew our Second Division meeting 1-1 in L4 as right-back John Molyneux played his 200th League game for the reds.

Lights on
1962 - We played a friendly at New Brighton to commemorate the new floodlights at their Tower Athletic Ground. The reds won 5-2, with Ian St. John nabbing a brace and Ian Callaghan, Jimmy Melia and Gordon Wallace also all on the scoresheet.

King Kenny on target
1975 - Celtic’s Kenny Dalglish scored as Scotland beat Denmark 3-1 in a European Championships qualifier at Hampden Park. Ex-red Ted MacDougall also struck, bagging his third and final goal for his country.

They had Heighway on the wing
Steve Heighway has twice represented his country on this day in history.
1975 - He won his eleventh cap as the Republic of Ireland beat Turkey 4-0 in a European Championships qualifier at Lansdowne Road.
1979 - He won his 24th cap as the Irish beat the USA 3-2 in a friendly at Dalymount Park.

International beginnings and ends
1974 - Future red Alan Kennedy made his debut for England Under-23’s, playing alongside fellow future red David Johnson in their 3-1 European Championships defeat of Czechoslovakia at Selhurst Park.
1997 – Forde Kippe bagged his only goal for Norway Under-21’s, with Vegard Heggem playing for the thirteenth and final time at this level in a 3-2 defeat of France in a European Championships qualifier in Valenciennes.
1999 – Michael Foley played for the Irish Under-16’s as they were held to a goalless draw by Wales in a European Championships qualifier in Dublin.

1994 – We won 3-1 at Ipswich Town with John Barnes adding to a Robbie Fowler brace.
1991 – Steve McManaman and Ian Rush struck as Port Vale held us to a 2-2 draw in a League Cup Third Round tie at Anfield. We won the replay but lost at Peterborough United at the next hurdle.
1988 – We won 2-0 at West Ham United thanks to goals from Ian Rush and Peter Beardsley.
1977 – David Fairclough netted as we lost 3-1 at Manchester City. Brian Kidd scored one of his six goals against the reds, with Mick Channon netting one of his seven past us and Joe Royle one of his five.

1966 – We lost 2-0 at Stoke City. John Ritchie struck one of his five goals against us, with Peter Dobing bagging one of his eight.
1955 – Alan Arnell and Billy Liddell netted as we beat Rotherham United 2-0 in the Second Division at Anfield.
1949 – Billy Liddell bagged the only goal of our trip to Fulham.
1898 – We came from behind to beat Sheffield United 2-1 at Anfield after Walter Bennett had nabbed the first of his four goals past us. Andrew McCowie converted a penalty, with George Allan also netting.

2010 – Ex-reds defender Stephen Wright signed for Brentford, having been released by Coventry City. He made fourteen appearances before joining Hartlepool United.
2003 – Stewart Downing joined Sunderland on loan from Middlesbrough, bagging three goals in seven games.
