A roasting for the Turks
2007 - We secured the record ever victory in the Champions League by any club when we trounced Beşiktaş JK 8-0 at Anfield, with the lead only 2-0 at half time. Yossi Benayoun bagged a hat-trick, with his first strike being our 500th in Europe. Peter Crouch and Ryan Babel netted twice each with Steven Gerrard also on target. Sami Hyypiä played his hundredth club European game, while Babel became our hundredth different scorer in continental competition. This was Rafael Benítez’s fiftieth Champions League game in charge of the reds.

It was announced on the same day that the construction of the club’s new home would begin in the spring after the city council approved revised plans for a 60,000-seater stadium. These plans were later shelved.

Rush scored one, Rush scored two
1982 - Ian Rush scored four goals in our 5-0 thumping of Everton at Goodison Park, our record win there. The Blues had debutant Glenn Keeley sent off early on for a professional foul on Kenny Dalglish, while Mark Lawrenson was also on target, his only strike in eighteen derby matches.

In comes Dave
1959 - Centre-forward Dave Hickson controversially signed for the reds from Everton for £12,000, as he was the Blues’ current darling. His arrival added an extra 15,000 to the usual gate as we beat Second Division pace-setters Aston Villa 2-1 at Anfield on his debut the following day, with one supporter running onto the pitch to kiss him on the cheek! He went on to score 38 times in 67 reds games.

Mo again
2022 – Mohamed Salah scored in his fourth consecutive game as we won 2-1 at Tottenham Hotspur, bagging a first-half brace before Harry Kane struck one of his nine goals past us.

Gini off the mark
2016 – Midfielder Gini Wijnaldum bagged his first reds strike, the final goal as we trounced Watford 6-1 at Anfield to end the day on top of the League table. Sadio Mané nabbed a brace, with Philippe Coutinho, Emre Can and Roberto Firmino also on target.

He scored one goal
2003 - Djimi Traoré scored his only ever reds goal in a Romanian mud-bath as we drew 1-1 with Steaua Bucureşti in a UEFA Cup Second Round match.
2018 – We lost a UEFA Champions League group game 2-0 at Crvena Zvezda, also known as Red Star Belgrade, with Milan Pavkov bagging a brace inside the opening half hour. The reds hit the woodwork twice after the break but failed to make the break-through.

European firsts
1973 - Crvena Zvezda beat us 2-1, our first ever home defeat in the European Cup, with Kevin Keegan having an effort chalked off despite the ball appearing to have crossed the line. Chris Lawler was on target in both legs, with his goal at Anfield being his 61st and last reds strike as we went out at the Second Round stage 4-2 on aggregate.

1991 - We beat Auxerre 3-0 in the UEFA Cup, the only time the reds have overcome a two-goal first leg deficit in European competition in normal play, to reach the Third Round. Jan Mølby set things rolling with a penalty before Mike Marsh bagged his first reds goal to level the tie with a stunning header, with Mark Walters scoring a memorable winner in front of the Kop seven minutes from time. The visitors had Frederic Darras sent off with fourteen minutes remaining.
1979 - We also travelled to France, losing a friendly 3-1 at Lille OSC, with Terry McDermott scoring our goal from the spot.

Scully at Anfield
1983 - The title sequence of ‘Scully’ was filmed at Anfield, with actor Andrew Schofield running out onto the pitch with the reds, in place of Kenny Dalglish. Ian Rush, Michael Robinson and Steve Nicol’s diving header handed us a 3-0 derby win to send us back to the top of the table.

Births and death
1870 - Forward Jimmy Stott was born in Darlington. He signed from Middlesbrough in August 1893, netting fourteen times in seventeen games as we won the Second Division title in our first League season, moving on to Grimsby Town in July 1894.
1909 – England international inside-forward Frank Becton died of tuberculosis. He joined the reds from Preston North End for £100 in March 1895, our first confirmed three-figure fee, and struck 42 times in 86 reds games before joining Sheffield United in October 1898.
1920 – Former Chairman Sir John Smith was born. He held the post between 1973 and 1990, overseeing the most glorious period of our history, having joined the board as a Director in 1971.

Semi’s bow
2002 - Jon Otsemobor made his senior reds bow in our 3-1 Worthington Cup Third Round victory over Southampton at Anfield, thanks to Patrik Berger’s 35th and final reds goal and strikes from El-Hadji Diouf and Milan Baroš. Steven Gerrard captained Liverpool for the first time. On the same day, Steve McManaman became the first Englishman to skipper Real Madrid, leading them to a 4-0 Copa del Rey defeat of Oviedo.
1920 - James Penman played his one and only senior reds game, as a replacement for Donald McKinlay at left-back, as we lost 1-0 at home to Bradford Park Avenue. David McLean bagged one of his eight goals against the reds.

Red centurions
1965 - Ian Callaghan played his 200th reds game as we won 2-0 at Sheffield Wednesday, thanks to goals from Roger Hunt and Peter Thompson inside the final fifteen minutes.
1897 – Matt McQueen reached a century of reds appearances as Nottingham Forest won 2-1 at Anfield with Dan Cunliffe on target.

Beating the double winners
1971 – Ian Ross scored his fourth and final reds goal with Emlyn Hughes and Ian Callaghan also on target in a 3-2 win over double winners Arsenal at Anfield. Tommy Smith put through his own net, with future red Ray Kennedy also scoring.

A goalscoring international debut
1957 - Reds left-winger Alan A’Court scored his only England goal on his debut in their 3-2 defeat by Northern Ireland at Wembley. The game counted for both the British International Championships and as a World Cup Qualifier. Keeper Tommy Younger played for Scotland on the same day.
2011 - Krisztián Adorján made his debut for Hungary Under-19’s as they beat the Faroe Islands 3-1 in a friendly in Portugal.

First goals
1937 - Forward John Shafto bagged the first of his three senior reds goals as we lost 4-3 at home to Brentford, their only ever Anfield victory in nine attempts. Alf Hanson and Willie Fagan struck our other goals, while Bobby Reid bagged a treble for the visitors, the last of his five strikes against the reds, with Dave McCulloch grabbing one of his seven goals past us.
1954 - Left-half Geoff Twentyman grabbed his first reds goal in our 2-1 Second Division victory over Hull City, with Eric Anderson also on target in our first ever meeting with the Tigers.

Jordan’s day
1995 – Midfielder Jordan Williams was born in Bangor. He left the reds after just one senior appearance to sign for Rochdale in June 2018 after a loan spell.

Scots in and out
1935 - Scottish international right-half Tom Morrison was sold to Sunderland after four goals in 254 reds games. He helped them to claim the League title in his first season on Wearside.
1897 - Forward Robert Colvin signed from Oldham County. He only ever made three senior appearances, without finding the net, and then joined Glossop North End the following year.

Management moves
2002 - Steve Nicol was appointed permanent head coach of New England Revolution, a role he held for almost nine years.
2010 - Christian Ziege was sacked as Manager of DSC Arminia Bielefeld, having been in charge for just six months.
2020 - Nigel Clough was named as Manager of Mansfield Town, leading them to sixteenth in League Two at the end of his first campaign.

An unlucky break
1999 - Derby County’s Stefano Eranio suffered a broken leg after a tackle from Sami Hyypiä as we won 2-0 at Anfield with goals from Danny Murphy and Jamie Redknapp.

Also on the move
1987 - Future reds loanee keeper Mark Prudhoe joined Third Division Bristol City on loan from Walsall. He only made three appearances for the Robins.
2014 – Jermaine Pennant signed for Indian Super League side Pune City, playing seven times. Meanwhile, left-back Andrea Dossena joined Leyton Orient. He was released at the end of the season after netting once in fifteen outings as they were relegated to League Two.
2019 – Argentinian centre-half Gabriel Paletta signed for S.S.D. Monza 1912, netting twice in fifty outings as he helped them to get promoted from Serie C in his first season, and then consolidate in Serie B.

2004 – Darren Anderton struck the only goal of Birmingham City’s visit.
1993 – Nigel Clough netted as we beat West Ham United 2-0 at Anfield, with Alvin Martin putting through his own net.
1976 – David Fairclough was on target as we won 1-0 at Sunderland.

1948 – We beat Portsmouth 3-1 in L4. Billy Liddell, Jack Balmer and Cyril Done were all on the scoresheet, with Peter Harris scoring the first of his eight goals against the reds.
1926 – Huddersfield Town won 3-2 at Anfield as Dick Forshaw bagged a brace. Future red Willie Devlin scored, before Billy Smith netted one of his four past us and George Brown struck one of his nine.
1909 – We were held to a 2-2 draw at home by Bury. Arthur Goddard and Jack Parkinson scored with Tom Chorlton having a twice-taken penalty saved both times. Tom Kay struck one of his four goals past us, with Angus McIntosh also scoring.

Jayden’s farewell
2021 – Jayden Danns won his third and last cap for England Under-16’s as they won a friendly 3-2 in France.

Also in international action
2019 – Ki-Jana Hoever played for the Dutch Under-17’s as they beat Nigeria 3-1 in their World Cup Finals Round of 16 game in Brazil.
