The bionic carrot’s debut
1975 - David Fairclough made his reds bow as we won 1-0 at Middlesbrough thanks to a Terry McDermott strike. He went on to bag 55 goals in 154 reds game, two-fifths of which were from off the bench. The bionic carrot helped us to three League titles, three European trophies and two League Cups in his nine years at Anfield.

Luis sets a new record
2005 - Luis García became our all-time top scorer in the new Champions League format with seven, heading a goal as we beat Royal Sporting Club Anderlecht 3-0 at Anfield, who had Nenad Ještrovic sent off five minutes after coming on as a substitute for racially abusing Momo Sissoko. Fernando Morientes and Djibril Cissé were also on target that night. Steven Gerrard, Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mané, Dirk Kuyt and Peter Crouch have all since surpassed this record.

Happy birthdays
1937 – Inside-forward Jimmy Melia was born in the Scotland Road area of Liverpool. After winning England caps at schoolboy and youth level, he signed pro terms on his seventeenth birthday, scoring on his debut in December 1955. He went on to net 79 times in 286 reds games, helping us to the First and Second Division titles, before moving on to Wolverhampton Wanderers in March 1964.
1960 - Former reserves defender Alan Harper was born in Liverpool. He never made our first team and moved across the park in June 1983, going on to net five goals in 240 goals across two spells with the Toffees, including featuring in the 1984 League Cup Final and replay.
1946 – Full-back Alan Hignett was born in Liverpool. His only senior game came in April 1965 when Bill Shankly fielded a team of eleven reserves in our League match at Wolverhampton Wanderers, which came only five days before the FA Cup Final. He signed pro terms in November 1963, moving on to Chester in August 1966.

Red centurions
2022 - Jürgen Klopp took charge of the reds for the 400th time, securing his hundredth win in the UEFA Champions League in his management career as we beat SSC Napoli 2-0 at Anfield. Both goals came very late, with Mohamed Salah netting his 41st reds goal in Europe, becoming our joint top continental scorer alongside Steven Gerrard. Darwin Núñez added a stoppage time second as Virgil van Dijk played his 200th game for the club as we qualified from the group in second place, with right-back Calvin Ramsay making his reds bow as a late substitute.

2000 - We beat Chelsea 2-1 at Anfield in the Third Round of the Worthington Cup, our hundredth League Cup victory. Pegguy Arphexad made his first-team debut in a game which saw Emile Heskey sent off late on, so becoming the only red to date to be dismissed in a home League Cup tie. Danny Murphy opened the scoring following a John Terry mistake before Gianfranco Zola equalised. Robbie Fowler got the extra-time winner against our only top-flight opposition in that season’s victorious campaign.
1969 – Roger Hunt played his 400th League game for the reds in our 4-0 trouncing at Derby County. Kevin Hector struck the first two of his four goals against us, with John O’Hare bagging one of his six and John McGovern also on target.

Three for Walsh
1986 - Paul Walsh bagged a hat-trick, including a penalty, as we beat Norwich City 6-2 at Anfield. Ian Rush nabbed a brace, with the scoring completed by Steve Nicol, with ex-red David Hodgson netting for the visitors and Mike Phelan also on target. Kenny Dalglish came off the bench to replace Nicol, so making his 500th reds appearance. Graham Benstead was replaced in the City goal by Bryan Gunn following this game.

Another Anfield treble
1902 - Sam Raybould netted a treble as we thumped Middlesbrough 5-0, with Edgar Chadwick scoring the first of his seven reds goals and Jack Cox also on target.

Mo the skipper
2023 - Mohamed Salah captained the reds from the start for the first time as we won a League Cup Fourth Round tie 2-1 at Bournemouth, our 250th game in the competition. Cody Gakpo poked home in the first half, but Patrick Kluivert levelled with his first goal for the Cherries before Darwin Núñez struck a spectacular winner.

Also recently
2017 – Mohamed Salah scored after the break against Slovenian side Maribor at Anfield, before James Milner had a penalty saved in our UEFA Champions League group game. Emre Can and Daniel Sturridge both also scored to secure a 3-0 victory.

Mixed derby fortunes
1987 - We beat champions Everton 2-0 at Anfield thanks to goals from ex-Blue Steve McMahon and future Blue Peter Beardsley.
1941 - We lost 5-3 at Goodison Park in a Wartime League game. Cyril Done bagged a brace, with Billy Liddell also on target.

God off
1997 - Robbie Fowler struck in the first minute and was then sent off with a quarter of an hour left as we held Bolton Wanderers to a 1-1 draw on our first visit to the Reebok Stadium, after Nathan Blake’s late equaliser.

Vedgy’s last
1999 – Vegard Heggem bagged his third and last reds goal late on in our 3-1 defeat of Bradford City. The visitors took the lead through Dean Windass, with Titi Camara equalising and Jamie Redknapp converting a penalty before half time.

Beaten
2008 - We lost 2-1 in torrential rain at Tottenham Hotspur, despite taking the lead through Dirk Kuyt and then hitting the woodwork three times. Spurs equalised through a Jamie Carragher own goal, his sixth to set a new club record, before Roman Pavlyuchenko secured an unlikely victory.
2014 – We were beaten 1-0 at Newcastle United, thanks to a goal from Ayoze Pérez.

International debutants
1967 - Ray Clemence and Emlyn Hughes both won their first Under-23’s caps as England beat Wales 2-1 in a friendly at the Vetch Field.
2008 - John Barnes took over as Manager of Jamaica, having been appointed in September, a role he held until moving to Tranmere Rovers in June 2009.

Beginning and ends
1913 - Jimmy Dawson played the first of his fourteen reds games as we lost 3-0 at Manchester United. George Wall bagged two of his ten goals against the reds with Enoch West scoring the last of his eight.
1930 – Outside-right Dick Edmed made his 170th and final reds outing as Manchester City won 2-0 at Anfield. Fred Tilson netted the first of his six strikes past us, with Billy Austin also on the scoresheet.
1947 – Len Carney played his sixth and final senior reds game as we lost 2-0 at Blackpool. Jimmy McIntosh nabbed two of his six goals against the reds.

Bob signs on
1913 – Scottish forward Bob McDougall signed from St. Cuthbert Wanderers. He scored once in eight outings before moving on to Falkirk in October 1915.

Twice in the Potteries
We have twice visited Stoke City on this day in history.
1958 - We won 2-0 in a Second Division encounter thanks to strikes from Louis Bimpson and Jimmy Melia, on his 21st birthday.
1980 - Strike partners David Johnson and Kenny Dalglish twice gave us the lead as we were held to a top-flight draw, with the final goal coming as literally the last kick of the game. Lee Chapman netted the first of his six goals past us, with Paul Randall also on target. Stoke’s side also included future Blues Paul Bracewell and Adrian Heath.

Off to Meadow Lane on loan
2007 - Reserves forward Craig Lindfield joined League Two side Notts County on loan. He bagged just one goal in four outings for the Magpies before returning to Anfield.
2010 – Right-back Stephen Darby and midfielder Tom Ince both made temporary moves to Meadow Lane. Darby made nine appearances in this first spell there, with Ince netting twice in eight outings.

Other reds games
1952 –Jimmy Payne netted as we beat League leaders Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 at Anfield, with Billy Liddell converting the rebound from his own saved penalty.
1919 – Bertie Freeman bagged the last of his nine goals against the reds as Burnley won 1-0 in L4.

New boss
2011 – Ex-reds reserves forward Jon Newby was appointed Player/Manager of Conference North side Colwyn Bay, being sacked in January 2013.

Awards season
2002 - Gérard Houllier was awarded the Barclaycard Manager of the Month Award following three straight wins in October, against Chelsea, Leeds United and Tottenham Hotspur, as we sat on top of the table.
2011 – Luis Suárez and ex-red Xabi Alonso were both short-listed for the FIFA Ballon d’Or, with Barcelona’s Lionel Messi eventually claiming the prize.
