2009 – Fernando Torres struck three times as we thumped Hull City 6-1 at Anfield. Geovanni equalised after Torres handed us an early lead. Steven Gerrard made the score 4-1 before Ryan Babel bagged a late brace, with the second fortuitously deflecting off his ankle and looping over the keeper.
1964 - Bobby Graham bagged a treble on his League debut as we beat Aston Villa 5-1 at Anfield, with Ian Callaghan and Roger Hunt also on target. Future red Tony Hateley struck for the visitors.
1925 - Dick Forshaw scored a hat-trick as we thumped Everton 5-1 at Anfield, with Jimmy Walsh on target and Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers netting his hundredth League goal. In fact, Forshaw added a brace in the Goodison return the following February as we drew 3-3.
1945 – We also hosted the Blues, being held to a 1-1 draw after extra time in a Lancashire Senior Cup First Round replay, with Jack Balmer converting a spot-kick for the reds.
2012 – Forward Jerome Sinclair became our youngest every player, aged sixteen years and six days, when he came off the bench in our 2-1 Capital One Cup Third Round win at West Bromwich Albion. Loanee midfielder Nuri Şahin struck his first two reds goals after we fell behind to a Gabriel Tamaș goal, thanks to an error by keeper Brad Jones. Samed Yeşil also made his reds bow as we secured a club record sixth consecutive away win in the League Cup.
Off the mark
1931 - Right-half Ted Savage scored his only two goals on his reds bow, as a forward, as we beat Grimsby Town 4-0 in a First Division fixture at Anfield, with Gordon Hodgson also netting a brace.
2015 – James Milner opened the scoring with his first reds goal as we beat Aston Villa 3-2 at Anfield. Daniel Sturridge scored twice with Villa’s Rudy Gestede also bagging a brace.
1981 - Bill Shankly suffered a heart-attack, sadly dying three days later. On the same day, we drew 1-1 at West Ham United, with David Johnson heading in our equaliser after Geoff Pike had given the home side the lead.

2017 – Roberto Firmino reached a century of reds games as we drew 1-1 in a Champions League game at Spartak Moskva. Philippe Coutinho scored our goal.
2001 - A Jari Litmanen goal, in the team due to an injury to Michael Owen, was enough to see off Dynamo Kyiv in a Champions League group game at Anfield. Nick Barmby also struck a post.
1996 - We beat Finnish side Myllykosken Pallo-47 3-1 in a European Cup Winners’ Cup match, with Patrik Berger, Stan Collymore and John Barnes on target, as we progressed 4-1 on aggregate.
1972 - We survived a siege to hold Eintracht Frankfurt to a goalless draw in West Germany to reach the Second Round of the UEFA Cup thanks to a 2-0 first leg win.
1995 - We reached the same stage of that competition, despite not being able to break down Russians Spartak-Alania Vladikavkaz at Anfield, as the game ended without score, although Michael Thomas had a goal disallowed for offside. However, our 2-1 away win was enough to take us through.

1970 - Left-back Alec Lindsay scored an own goal to condemn us to a 1-0 defeat at Southampton.
Three failures against the Baggies
We have faced West Bromwich Albion in the top flight on three occasions on this day in history, without managing a win.
1896 - We were held to a goalless draw at Anfield.
1903 - We lost 3-1 at home, with Jack Cox grabbing our consolation. Defender Herbert Craik played his only ever reds game while George Dorsett struck one of his five goals past us, with Fred Hobson and Charlie Simmons also on target.
1914 - We were thumped 4-0 at The Hawthorns, with Alf Bentley netting the last two of his four goals against the reds, with Fred Morris also nabbing a brace.
2018 – We lost 2-1 at home to Chelsea in the Third Round of the EFL Cup. Ex-Blue Daniel Sturridge opened the scoring after an hour, but Emerson and Eden Hazard both struck late on as we fell to defeat for the first time that season, with this being the sixth of Hazard’s seven goals past us to date.
A Low end
1936 - Centre-half Norman Low made his thirteenth and final reds appearance, deputising for Tom Bradshaw in our 2-0 defeat at Leeds United. Bob Glassey also played his ninth and last reds game. Meanwhile, outside-left Alf Hanson reached a century of reds outings.
From the spot
1992 - Jan Mølby converted our first Anfield penalty in the Premier League as we lost 3-2 to Wimbledon, with Steve McManaman netting after a Ronnie Rosenthal strike came back off the bar. We came from two goals behind to go in level at the break, but Robbie Earle bagged the winner with his second of the game, the first two of his five goals past us, with Dons skipper John Fashanu opening the scoring with one of his six strikes against the reds.
2000 - Brad Friedel was on the losing side as Spain beat the USA 3-1 in the Semi-final of the Sydney Olympics.
International red saint
1961 - Ian St. John won his first cap as a red, and his eighth for Scotland in total. He scored in their 3-2 World Cup qualifying defeat of Czechoslovakia at Hampden Park.
1973 - The same fixture was played, this time as a qualifier for the Finals in West Germany. Celtic’s Kenny Dalglish played in the Scots’ 2-1 win. Emlyn Hughes featured on the same day as England trounced Austria 7-0 in a friendly at Wembley Stadium.
2009 – Martin Kelly featured for England Under-20’s as they lost 1-0 to future red Sebastián Coates’ Uruguay in the World Championship Finals in Egypt.
2011 – Future red Danny Ward won his third and last cap for Wales Under-19’s as they lost a European Championships qualifier 3-2 in Slovenia.
Defeat to the Mancs
1908 - Jack Cox netted to add to an Alex Raisbeck penalty as we lost 3-2 to Manchester United at their old Bank Street ground. Harold Halse bagged the first two of his four goals against us, with Jimmy Turnbull netting the last of his six.
A real trouncing
1953 - We suffered our worst ever defeat at Charlton Athletic as we were thumped 6-0. We were relegated that season after finishing bottom of the table. Right-back Bert Childs played his second and final reds game as future red John Evans netted the last two of his five goals past us, with South African centre-forward Stuart Leary bagging four of his six strikes against the reds.
Zico junior heads south
1996 - Reserves defender Ashley Neal joined Third Division Brighton & Hove Albion on loan. Phil Neal’s son made four starts for the Seagulls, all ending in defeat.
