Robbie’s second goal was his hundredth League strike, with Egil Ostenstad nabbing the visitors’ consolation. 1909 - Inside-left Ronald Orr netted three as we beat Lincoln City 5-1 in an FA Cup First Round tie at Anfield. Joe Hewitt and Jack Parkinson nabbed the others. In comes Roy 1964 - Roy Evans signed for the reds on the newly introduced ‘B’ form, a precursor to a full apprenticeship. He became one of the club’s greatest servants, serving as fan, left-back, reserves coach, Assistant Manager and then finally the top job for four years. Happy birthdays 1995 – Japanese forward Takumi Minamino was born in Izumisano. He signed from Red Bull Salzburg for £7.25m in January 2020, bagging fourteen goals in 55 reds outings as helped us to claim the League title and head towards two cup victories at Wembley. He was sold to AS Monaco for an initial €15m in June 2022. 1961 - Former goalkeeping coach José Ochotorena was born in San Sebastián, Guipúzcoa in Spain. He had previously coached the goalkeepers under Rafael Benítez at Valencia as well as for the Spanish national team before accompanying Rafa to Melwood, returning to the Mestalla in July 2007. 1881 - Scottish wing-half Tommy Fairfoul was born in West Calder, Midlothian. He signed from Third Lanark in 1913 and played 71 reds games without scoring, including the 1914 FA Cup Final, before being suspended for the match rigging scandal against Manchester United in April 1915. He then became a taxi owner in Liverpool. 1919 – Centre-half John Easdale was born in Dumbarton. He only played two senior games after arriving from junior football in February 1937, moving down into the Third Division to join Stockport County in 1948. Xabi Alonso eat your heart out 1926 - Reds left-back Donald McKinlay scored from ten yards inside his own half, as we beat West Ham United 2-1 at Upton Park. Tom Scott grabbed the other, with Vic Watson bagging the first of his nine strikes against the reds while right-back Ephraim Longworth played his 300th League game for the reds. Nando’s century 2011 – Fernando Torres played his hundredth League game as we were held to a 2-2 derby draw at Anfield, Kenny Dalglish’s first home game of his second spell in charge. Raul Meireles scored his first reds goal to open the scoring, with Dirk Kuyt salvaging a point from the spot after we fell behind to goals from Sylvain Distin and Jermaine Beckford in the second half. Maxi’s bow 2010 - We were held to a 1-1 draw at Stoke City, with Sotirios Kyrgiakos giving us the lead with his first reds goal. Maxi Rodríguez made his reds bow, while this was the first time we had played a first-class match since shirt numbers were introduced when no player was wearing any of the numbers from one to eleven. Robert Huth grabbed a last-minute equaliser after we had been denied a strong penalty claim for a challenge on Lucas, with there still being time for Dirk Kuyt to head against a post. 1897 – George Allan bagged the only goal of our home game with Stoke. Billy Heames had to go off injured shortly after the break, reducing the visitors to ten men for the rest of the game. Lawro’s last 1988 – Mark Lawrenson was substituted with an ankle injury in our 2-0 Anfield defeat of Arsenal that led to his retirement from playing just two months later aged thirty. This was his 356th and last reds game. John Aldridge and Peter Beardsley netted as we stretched our unbeaten run to 23 games that season. European defeat 1985 - We lost 2-0 at Juventus in the UEFA Super Cup, with Zbigniew Boniek grabbing both the goals. Milestones against 1932 - George Brown scored four of his nine goals past us as Aston Villa thumped us 6-1 at Villa Park, with Eric Houghton bagging one of his six goals against us and George Stephenson also netting. Harold Barton grabbed our consolation. 1965 – We beat Sheffield Wednesday 4-2 at Anfield, with Roger Hunt bagging a brace after Mark Pearson had given the Owls the lead, the 3,000th goal we had conceded in the top flight. John Hickson also struck for the visitors, with Gordon Milne and Ian St. John securing victory late on. Beaten on the road 1954 - We suffered our twentieth straight away League defeat as we lost 2-1 at Preston North End. Unsurprisingly, this remains a club record. Inside-forward Kevin Baron struck his 32nd goal in his 153rd and final reds game. Charlie Wayman netted the last of his six goals against the reds, with Bobby Foster also scoring. 1971 - Gerry Queen struck the only goal of the game as Crystal Palace beat us for the first time at the sixth time of asking in all competitions, in our League meeting at Selhurst Park. Midfielder Steve Arnold came off the bench for the first of his two senior reds appearances. Seeing red 1960 - Dave Hickson was sent off after two quick-fire late bookings as we beat Sheffield United 3-0 at Anfield in a First Division fixture. Beating the Blues 1943 - We defeated Everton 2-1 in a Wartime League match at Anfield, with Jack Balmer and Cyril Done on target. Beating the Wearsiders We have twice beaten Sunderland 2-1 at Anfield in the First Division on this day in history. 1904 - Sam Raybould and Jack Cox were on target. 1915 - Tom Miller and Fred Pagnam netted in the final minutes as forward Billy Lacey and inside-forward Tom Miller both reached a century of reds games. Most recently 2022 – We beat Brentford 3-0 at Anfield, with Fabinho heading us in front just before the break. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Takumi Minamino both netted in the second half. Digger for the League 1991 - John Barnes represented the Football League in a game against an Italian League side in Napoli. New bosses 2008 - Kevin Keegan was announced as Manager of Newcastle United for the second time, to jubilant scenes on Tyneside. However, he only stayed for eight months, winning just six out of his 21 games. On the same day, ex-red El-Hadji Diouf played as Senegal beat Benin 2-1 in a friendly. 2006 - Roy Hodgson took over as Manager of Finland, having been appointed the previous August. 2020 – Ex-reds winger Mark Kennedy was appointed Head Coach of Macclesfield Town, only taking charge of twelve games before resigning in August after the League was suspended due to COVID and the club were relegated after a points deduction due to financial issues. Future reds debutants 2000 – Alberto Aquilani made his debut for Italy Under-15’s in their goalless draw with Uruguay. On the same day, Brad Friedel played in the USA’s 1-1 friendly draw with Iran in Pasadena. 1974 - Terry McDermott won his only Under-23’s cap as England were held to a goalless draw by Wales at Ashton Gate. 2022 – Ex-red Steven Caulker played for Sierra Leone as they drew 2-2 with Ivory Coast in an Africa Cup of Nations Finals group game in Cameroon. 2018 – Rigobert Song took charge of Cameroon as they lost 1-0 to Congo in an African Nations Championship group game in Morocco. 2012 – Future red Kolo Touré played as the Ivory Coast beat Libya 1-0 in a friendly in Abu Dhabi. 2002 – Robbie Foy featured for Scotland Under-17’s in their 2-0 friendly win in Malta. Other reds games 1993 –We lost 2-0 at Wimbledon, with John Fashanu scoring one of his five goals against us, with Steve Cotterill also scoring. 1982 – Ronnie Whelan and Kenny Dalglish netted as we beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 at Anfield. 1973 – We beat Burnley 3-0 in an FA Cup Third Round replay in L4, with John Toshack netting twice and Peter Cormack also on the scoresheet. 1937 – We lost 3-0 at Norwich City in a Third Round encounter. On the move again 1930 – Forward Billy Millar left the reds to sign for Barrow, having scored twice in three games since arriving from Linfield for £1,150 in March 1928. He went on to set a scoring record at Barrow by netting thirty goals in as many Third Division North games, as well as making his debut for Northern Ireland. 1987 - Future reds loanee keeper Mark Prudhoe joined Sheffield Wednesday on loan from Walsall. He did not make a first-team appearance while at Hillsborough, as was the case when he arrived at Anfield in November 1994. 2014 – Ex-reserves defender Gareth Roberts had his contract with Bury terminated despite being club captain. He had played just thirteen times for the Shakers. 2017 – Ex-reds left-back Aly Cissokho joined Olympiacos on loan from Aston Villa. He played once in ten outings while in Greece. 2019 – Ex-reds midfielder Momo Sissoko signed for Sochaux-Montbéliard, playing thirteen times before the end of the season. 2022 - Rafael Benítez was sacked as Manager of Everton, after just seven months in charge. 2023 – Midfielder Jake Cain left the reds to sign for Swindon Town after just one senior reds appearance, netting once in sixteen outings in his first campaign with the Robins.

Happy birthday Tosh 1949 - John Toshack was born in Cardiff. He signed from his hometown club for a club record £110,000 in November 1970 and scored 96 goals in 247 reds appearances, helping us to three League titles, two UEFA Cups, FA Cup and FA Charity Shield before returning to Wales to join Swansea City as Player/Manager in February 1978. 1890 – Half-back Charles Hafekost was born in Sunderland. He signed from Gillingham in 1914, but made just one senior reds appearance before joining Darlington Forge Albion the following year. 1997 – Winger Harry Wilson was born in Wrexham. He became the reds’ and Wales’s youngest ever senior international in October 2013 aged just sixteen years and 207 days. He made his reds bow in January 2017 in our FA Cup Third Round replay win at Plymouth Argyle, but only made one further first-team appearance before being sold to Fulham for a reported £12m in July 2021. Farewell Bugsie 2017 - Reds stalwart Ronnie Moran died. He spent 49 years at Anfield, making 379 senior appearances and bagging seventeen goals. He helped us to win the Second Division in 1963 and the League title the following year, before joining the coaching staff. He took charge of the reds for ten games in between Kenny Dalglish’s departure and Graeme Souness’s appointment and had another spell in temporary charge while Souness recovered from his heart operation. Stevie’s treble 2009 - We thumped Aston Villa 5-0 at Anfield with Steven Gerrard bagging his first League treble that included two penalties, meaning that he had successfully converted spot-kicks in three consecutive fixtures. Dirk Kuyt opened the scoring before Albert Riera grabbed his fifth and final reds goal, while Pepe Reina kept his hundredth clean sheet in a club record 197 games. Brad Friedel was sent off for the visitors when conceding the second penalty, although this was later rescinded. Stevie’s unwanted record 2015 - We lost 2-1 at home to Manchester United, with Juan Mata bagging a brace for the visitors. Steven Gerrard was sent off just forty seconds after coming off the bench at the start of the second half, a club record. Daniel Sturridge struck our goal, with Simon Mignolet saving a late Wayne Rooney penalty. Martin Škrtel was later given a retrospective three-match ban after allegedly stamping on David De Gea. League Cup despair 1978 - The only goal of our League Cup Final replay with Nottingham Forest came from a John Robertson penalty awarded for a Phil Thompson foul on John O’Hare that was actually committed outside the box. We therefore had to wait a further three years for our first triumph in this competition. Ian Callaghan was booked by referee Pat Partridge for the only time in 857 first-class games for the reds, while Terry McDermott had a goal disallowed. Luis at the treble 2014 - Luis Suárez scored a hat-trick as we won 6-3 at Cardiff City, despite falling behind twice. This was his sixth and last reds treble as he equalled Robbie Fowler’s Premier league club record of 28 goals in a season. Martin Škrtel struck twice and Daniel Sturridge also on target. Frazier Campbell scored one of his four goals past us, with Jordon Mutch nabbing a brace. New loanees 1990 - Ronnie Rosenthal signed for the reds on loan from Standard de Liège. He made the move permanent for £1m three months later, going on to net a total of 22 goals in 97 reds games before being sold to Tottenham Hotspur for £250,000 in January 1994. 1995 - Keeper Alec Chamberlain arrived on loan from Sunderland as cover for David James. He was on the bench at the Coca-Cola Cup Final later that season, and five subsequent League games, without getting onto the pitch. Reds promoted 2011 - Damien Comolli was promoted from Director of Football Strategy to Director of Football, while Commercial Director Ian Ayre moved up from Commercial Director to Managing Director. Comolli left the club in April 2012, with Ayre departing in February 2017. A reds leader passes on 1936 - John McKenna died in Walton Hospital. He served as a Director from the formation of the club until July 1921, having two lengthy spells as the club’s Chairman. He acted as our boss for the 1895/96 season, guiding us to the Second Division title, before being replaced by Tom Watson. He was later Chairman of the Football League for two decades. Knocking the U’s for six 1986 - Oxford United were the unlucky visitors to Anfield as two goals apiece from Ian Rush and Jan Mølby, plus Mark Lawrenson’s eighteenth and final reds strike and a goal from Ronnie Whelan sent them home on the wrong end of a 6-0 scoreline, as they just escaped relegation back to the Second Division. Off the mark 1930 – Outside-left Gordon Gunson bagged his first reds goal as we beat Aston Villa 2-0 in a top-flight encounter at Anfield, with Jimmy Smith also netting. Fagan’s treble 1940 - Willie Fagan scored a hat-trick, including two penalties, as we thumped Crewe Alexandra 6-3 in a Wartime League match at Gresty Road. Len Carney, Jack Balmer and Billy Liddell bagged the other goals. Mixed fortunes against Spurs 1995 - We held Tottenham Hotspur to a goalless draw at White Hart Lane, with David James saving a penalty from Jürgen Klinsmann. 1987 - We also failed to score at Spurs, losing 1-0 to a Chris Waddle strike. 1975 - Kevin Keegan and Peter Cormack netted as we won 2-0 in north London, with Ian Callaghan playing his 700th reds game. Derby stalemate 1977 - We held Everton to a goalless draw at Goodison Park, our third consecutive scoreless trip across the park. Last outing 1947 – Centre-half John Easdale played his second and final reds game in our 1-1 top-flight draw with Derby County at Anfield. Phil Taylor struck for the reds. Twice against the Seagulls We twice faced Brighton & Hove Albion in the League on this day in the early 1980’s. 1980 - An Alan Hansen goal was enough for victory at Anfield. 1983 - Ian Rush netted a brace in the final quarter of an hour as we came from two goals down at half time to draw 2-2 at the Goldstone Ground. Future red Michael Robinson and Gary Howlett struck for the home side. Twice against the Magpies twice We have twice faced Newcastle United at Anfield on this day in history. 1902 – We went down 1-0, with defender Thomas Hunter playing his fifth and final reds game and inside-forward John ‘Sailor’ Hunter turning out for the 45th and last time for us. Future red ‘Wee’ Ronald Orr struck the goal. 1952 – We won 3-0 when Albert Stubbins struck his last two reds goals, with John Smith also on target as Bob Paisley played his 200th League game for us. We have also twice visited Notts County on this day over the years. 1913 - We lost 3-0 at Meadow Lane with Jack Peart bagging a treble, the first of his four strikes against us. 1958 - We won 2-0, with Jimmy Melia and Louis Bimpson on the scoresheet. International beginnings and end 1890 - Future reds player, Manager and Director Matt McQueen won the first of his two senior caps for Scotland, helping them to thump Wales 5-0 in the British International Championships in Paisley. 1994 – Future reds midfielder Jean-Michel Ferri won the first of his five senior caps for France as they beat Chile 3-1 in a friendly in Lyon. 2012 – Future red Samed Yeşil won his third and last cap for Germany Under-18’s in their 3-2 home friendly defeat by France. 2019 - Bobby Adekanye debuted for the Dutch Under-20’s in their 3-2 friendly defeat of Mexico in Rijnsburg. Rhys Williams winning his first cap for England Under-18’s as they lost 1-0 to the Czech Republic in the UAE Sports Chain Cup in Dubai, with Bobby Duncan and Curits Jones also featuring. 2023 – Dominic Corness and Jarell Quansah won their first caps for England Under-20’s in their 2-0 friendly defeat of Germany at the Manchester City Academy Stadium, with Harvey Davies also in action. On the same day, Luke Chambers, Bobby Clark, Melkamu Frauendorf and Caoimhín Kelleher all also played for their countries. Strikers on target 2013 – Luis Suárez scored for Uruguay in their 1-1 World Cup qualifying draw with Paraguay in Montevideo. Ex-reserves on the move 2001 - Paul Dalglish joined Wigan Athletic on loan from Norwich City. He played six times for the Latics and returned for the whole of the following season. On the same day, reserves defender Alan Navarro temporarily joined Crewe Alexandra. He netted once in eight appearances and returned for a second loan spell five months later. 1999 - Jim Magilton joined Ipswich Town from Sheffield Wednesday for £682,500, after a loan spell. He later took over as Manager at Portman Road. 2003 - Midfielder Neil Prince signed for Leigh RMI from fellow Conference strugglers Southport. Also in international action 2008 - Harry Kewell captained Australia while winning his thirtieth cap, as they were held to a goalless draw in a friendly in Singapore. On the same day, future red Jonjo Shelvey appeared for England Under-16’s as they lost 1-0 to the USA in the Montaigu Tournament in Les Brouzils. 2007 – Future red Philipp Degen played for Switzerland as they beat Jamaica 2-0 in a tournament game in the USA. 1989 – Future red Karlheinz Riedle played for West Germany in their 2-1 friendly win in Bulgaria. 1988 – Future red Nigel Clough played for England Under-21’s as they beat Scotland 1-0 in the second leg of their European Championships Quarter-final at his home City Ground, to progress 2-0 on aggregate. Future reds coach Steve Clarke played for Scotland on the same day. 1972 – Larry Lloyd captained an England Under-23’s side that also included Kevin Keegan as they lost 1-0 to East Germany at Ashton Gate. 1919 – Elisha Scott played for Ireland as they lost 2-1 to Scotland in an unofficial Victory International at Ibrox.

Happy birthday Gary Mac 1964 - Gary McAllister was born in Motherwell. He arrived on a free transfer in July 2000, proving inspirational in the run-in to the treble that season. He netted nine goals in 87 reds games before moving back to Coventry City as Player/Manager in May 2002. He returned to Anfield as a First Team Coach last summer, moving into an ambassadorial role after Brendan Rodgers was sacked. 1896 – Winger Chris Harrington was born in Edge Hill. He signed from South Liverpool in December 1920, failing to score in four senior outings, before returning to his former club the following year. A sad day 1984 - Jack Balmer died in Liverpool. He had bagged 111 goals in 309 reds games after signing from Everton in May 1935, including trebles in three consecutive matches on our way to the League title in 1947. He also played in the FA Cup Final three years later. 1899 - Thomas ‘Harry’ Bradshaw died of tuberculosis in Tottenham. He joined from Northwich Victoria in October 1893 and netted 51 times in 138 games for the reds, helping us to our first two Second Division titles and was the first reds player to win senior international honours. He left Anfield to join Tottenham Hotspur in May 1898. 2004 - Left-back Eddie Spicer died. He was decorated for bravery whilst serving in the Royal Marines in World War Two, going on to net twice in 168 reds games, helping us to the first post-war League title and featuring in the 1950 FA Cup Final. Unfortunately, a second broken leg ended his career in December 1953. 2013 - Forward Wayne Harrison died aged just 46 after suffering from pancreatic cancer. He signed from Oldham Athletic for £250,000 in January 1985 at the age of seventeen, then a record fee for a teenager, although he never made a senior reds appearance before having to retire due to injury in the summer of 1991, aged just 23. King Billy’s four 1954 - Billy Liddell scored four goals as we thumped Ipswich Town 6-2 at Anfield in our first season after relegation. Also on the scoresheet were Louis Bimpson and John Evans. Rushie starts out 1979 - Ian Rush signed as a professional for Chester. He bagged seventeen goals in 39 games at Sealand Road, before moving to Anfield for £300,000 the following April. Smiling at a treble 1925 - Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers and the visitors’ Hughie Gallacher each bagged a hat-trick as we beat Newcastle United 6-3 at Anfield. Centre-half David Pratt scored his only reds goal, with Cyril Oxley and Dick Forshaw also on the scoresheet. These were the first of Gallacher’s eight goals past us, while our third goal was the club’s 2,000th in all competitions. 1923 - The Geordies left Anfield with both points after winning 1-0. A pair from The Valley 1953 - Don Welsh signed full-back Frank Lock and forward John Evans from Charlton Athletic, for £7,500 and £12,500 respectively. On the same day, right-half and future Manager Phil Taylor made his 314th and final League appearance as we lost 5-2 at West Bromwich Albion, with centre-forward Jack Smith turning out for the 59th and last time. Alan A’Court was on target for the reds, with full-back Ray Lambert scoring from the spot, his second and final reds goal. Frank Griffin struck the last two of his six goals against the reds, with Ronnie Allen scoring the final one of his five, and Ray Barlow and Johnny Nicholls also on target. 1936 - We also lost 3-1 at The Hawthorns, with Fred Howe grabbing our consolation. Harry Jones bagged a brace for the Baggies, with Stan Wood netting one of his five goals past us. Most recent Christmas goal 1957 - Tony Rowley scored our most recent goal on Christmas Day as we lost 3-1 in a Second Division fixture at Grimsby Town, with right-back John Molyneux reaching a century of reds games. 1930 - We also visited Blundell Park for a game that ended goalless, with full-back Tommy Lucas making his 300th League outing for the reds. Christmas derbies 1916 – We were beaten 1-0 in a friendly at Goodison Park. 1939 - We lost a friendly 3-2 to Everton at Anfield with both our goals coming from Willie Fagan. 1940 - We won a Wartime League game 3-1 at home, thanks to a Len Carney brace and Berry Nieuwenhuys. Bradley into the breach 1909 - Left-half Jim Bradley stepped in as an emergency goalkeeper, helping us to a 3-0 top-flight win over Bolton Wanderers at Anfield. Arthur Goddard and Ronald Orr grabbed our goals, to add to a Jack Parkinson penalty. We have faced Bolton seven times in the First Division on Christmas Day, winning five and losing just once. 1914 – Centre-half Bob Ferguson played his hundredth reds game in our 1-0 win at Burnden Park. Forward Billy Lacey was our scorer. 1911 – Jack Parkinson netted the only goal of the game at Anfield. 1905 – We were held to a 2-2 draw in L4. Albert Shepherd scored the first of his twelve goals against the reds after Bob Clifford had opened the scoring. Joe Hewitt and Arthur Goddard both netted after the break. 1902 - Our biggest win was a 5-1 thumping at Anfield when Charlie Wilson struck a brace, his final goals for the club.
