Taylor out
1959 - Phil Taylor resigned as Manager, paving the way for the arrival of Bill Shankly the following month. He had made 345 appearances as right-half before and after the war, netting 34 times and winning one League title, and captaining the side. He joined the coaching staff when he retired from playing in 1954, and became Manager two years later, staying in the job for three years. However, he has the unhappy distinction of being the only reds boss never to manage the side in the top flight. He said, “The strain of it all has made me very tired at times and I decided, great as is my love for Liverpool, to resign.” He led us to 76 victories in his 150 games in charge.

Smiley happy birthday
1896 - Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers was born in Willington Quay, Northumberland. He signed on in April 1915 and struck 151 times in 339 reds games, helping us to back-to-back League titles in the early 1920’s. He was transferred to West Bromwich Albion in March 1928.

Sammy’s goalscoring debut
1982 - Sammy Lee scored on his England debut in a 3-0 European Championships qualifying win in Greece. Phil Thompson was making his 42nd and final international appearance, while fellow clubmate Phil Neal also played. Alan Hansen, Mark Lawrenson, Graeme Souness and future reds Michael Robinson and John Wark all also played in qualifiers that day.
1923 - Centre-half Billy McDevitt made his reds bow, the first of just four senior outings, as we shared a goalless draw with Aston Villa at Villa Park.

Reds farewells
2004 - The funeral of reds legend Emlyn Hughes took place at Sheffield Cathedral. ‘Crazy Horse’ signed from Blackpool for a club record £65,000 in February 1967 and played 665 times in his twelve years at Anfield, netting 49 times and winning two European Cups, four League titles, two UEFA Cups, FA Cup and two FA Charity Shields. His greatest season was probably 1976/77 when he captained the side to within a whisker of a glorious treble, as well as being voted the Football Writers’ Player of the Year.
1941 – Scottish left-back Duncan McLean died. He made his reds bow in our very first game having remained when Everton departed Anfield. He bagged four goals in 82 games, helping us to the Second Division title before returning north of the border to join Edinburgh St. Bernard’s in October 1895, with whom he won two full international caps.

Three Anfield top-flight trebles
1973 - Kevin Keegan bagged a hat-trick, including a penalty, as we beat Ipswich Town 4-2, with Peter Cormack also on target. Bryan Hamilton and future red David Johnson scored for the Tractor Boys, one of his four goals past us.
1962 - Roger Hunt netted a treble as we thumped Leyton Orient 5-0. Willie Stevenson bagged his first goal for the club with Ian St. John also on the scoresheet while Gerry Byrne was playing his hundredth League game. The Saint’s strike was the club’s 4,000th League goal.
1934 - Legendary striker Gordon Hodgson scored one of his seventeen reds hat-tricks as Leicester City went home on the wrong end of a 5-1 scoreline. Dave Wright also scored with forward Harold Taylor netting his sixth and final goal. Right-back Bob Done played his 155th and last reds game as inside-left Archie McPherson appeared for the 133rd and final time. Danny Liddle bagged one of his four strikes against the reds.

Luis again
2012 – Luis Suárez scored in his third consecutive game, bagging a brace, before left-back José Enrique netted his first reds goal in our 3-0 defeat of Wigan Athletic at Anfield.

Red milestones
2001 - Dietmar Hamann played his hundredth reds game as we drew 1-1 at Blackburn Rovers. Michael Owen’s early headed goal was cancelled out in the second half by Matt Jansen as we extended our unbeaten League run to eight games that season.
1965 - We also faced Rovers, with Ian St. John bagging a brace in a 5-2 win as we topped the table for the first time that season, with Willie Stevenson scoring from the spot and Roger Hunt and Tommy Smith also on target.

1990 – Peter Beardsley bagged the club’s 5,000th goal in the top flight as we beat Coventry City 1-0 at Highfield Road.
1991 – Steve McMahon played his 200th League game for the reds as we were held to a goalless draw at West Ham United.

First Anfield League derby
1894 - Everton paid their first League visit to Anfield as the away side. Inside-left Davy Hannah bagged his first reds goal, with Jimmy Ross converting a last-minute penalty as we drew 2-2.

Thumping the Imps
1956 - Alan Arnell and Johnny Wheeler grabbed two goals apiece as we beat Lincoln City 4-0 in a Second Division encounter at Anfield.

Mixed fortunes against the Owls
1945 - Jack Balmer netted a brace as we beat Sheffield Wednesday 3-2 in a Wartime League match at Hillsborough, with Billy Liddell also on the scoresheet.
1900 - We lost by the same score to The Wednesday at their old Owlerton ground in a top-flight meeting, with Alex Raisbeck and Sam Raybould on the scoresheet. Andrew Wilson netted the first two of his eight strikes against the reds, with Tommy Crawshaw also on target.

Tosh exits the Bernabeu again
1999 - John Toshack was sacked as Manager of Real Madrid for the second time after nine months in charge, eleven games into the new season. His new £22m signing Nicolas Anelka had not yet set La Liga alight.

International farewells
2010 - Jari Litmanen became Finland’s oldest over goalscorer, converting a penalty while winning his 137th and last cap in Finland’s 8-0 thumping of San Marino in a European Championships qualifier in Helsinki, with ex-red Daniel Sjölund also featuring. Fernando Torres won his final cap as a reds player as Spain were thumped 4-0 in a friendly in Portugal, with Raul Meireles and ex-reds Álvaro Arbeloa and Xabi Alonso also featuring. Ryan Babel played for the Netherlands for the last time as a red as they beat Turkey 1-0 in another friendly, with future red Nuri Şahin on the losing side. Luis Suárez won his final cap while with Ajax as Uruguay lost 2-0 in Chile.
2014 – Jordon Ibe played his third and last game for England Under-20’s as they drew a friendly 1-1 in Portugal, before winning a penalty shoot-out 4-3. On the same day, ex-red Tom Ince and future reds Danny Ings and Kostas Tsimikas also played for their countries.

2015 – Future red Javier Manquillo won his seventh and last cap for Spain Under-21’s as they won a European Championships qualifier 3-2 in Croatia. On the same day, Marko Grujić played for Croatia at the same level for the final time as a Crvena Zvezda player as they lost a qualifier 2-0 in Slovenia. Meanwhile, Wataru Endō featured for Japan for the final time while with Shonan Bellmare as they won a World Cup qualifier 2-0 in Cambodia, with fellow future red Takumi Minamino also playing.
2018 - Toni Silva won his last cap as a Mamelodi Sundowns player as Guinea-Bissau drew 0-0 in Namibia in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier. Andy Robertson captained his country to a 4-0 friendly win in Albania, with Rafael Camacho, Tom Clayton, Curtis Jones and Sadio Mané also in international action.

1993 - Gérard Houllier took charge of his twelfth and final game as France Manager as they lost 2-1 to Bulgaria at the Parc des Princes to a last-minute goal. This defeat ensured that they missed out on the World Cup in the USA the following summer. On the same day, Jim Magilton won his last cap as an Oxford United player, and eighteenth in all, as Northern Ireland were held to a 1-1 draw by the Republic of Ireland at Windsor Park. Ex-reds John Aldridge and Ray Houghton both played as the Republic qualified for the World Cup Finals. This was Billy Bingham’s last game as boss of the North. Also in action that day were future reds Gary McAllister and Karlheinz Riedle, while Roy Hodgson took charge of Switzerland.

1999 - Jamie Redknapp won his seventeenth and final cap for England, with ex-red Don Hutchison bagging the only goal of Scotland’s 1-0 win over Kevin Keegan’s England at Wembley, although the home side progressed to Euro 2000 from the play-offs 2-1 on aggregate. Michael Owen, future red Emile Heskey and ex-red Paul Ince all also featured. Brad Friedel and future reds Milan Baroš, Yossi Benayoun and Fernando Morientes were also in friendly action that day.
1980 - Bruce Grobbelaar won his fourth and final cap for Zimbabwe as a Vancouver Whitecaps player as they beat Cameroon 1-0 in the first leg of their World Cup qualifying play-off in Harare.

2007 - Martin Škrtel won his last cap as a Zenit St. Petersburg player as his Slovakia side lost 3-1 to ex-red Milan Baroš’s Czech Republic in a Euro 2008 qualifier in Prague.
2009 – Škrtel again represented his country as they lost 2-1 to Chile in a friendly in Žilina. Future red Gini Wijnaldum bagged his first goal for the Dutch Under-21’s as they beat Spain 2-1 in a European Championships qualifier. Meanwhile, future reds Fabio Borini, Andy Carroll, Mamadou Sakho and Daniel Sturridge all also played at Under-21’s that day.
1948 - Future red Sammy Smyth played for Ireland as they lost 3-2 to Scotland in the British International Championships at Hampden Park.

First caps
2010 - Alberto Aquilani won his first cap while a reds player and also while on loan at Juventus as Italy drew 1-1 with Romania in a friendly in Germany, with Mario Balotelli playing for the first time since moving to Manchester City. Andy Carroll and Jordan Henderson both made their senior bows for England, winning their only caps before moving to Anfield, with future red Mamadou Sakho also playing his first senior international. Ex-red Peter Crouch netted as France won 2-1 at Wembley, with Steven Gerrard, future red James Milner and ex-reds Alou Diarra and Stephen Warnock also in action. Also featuring for their countries that day were Péter Gulácsi, Nabil El Zhar, Lucas, Christian Poulsen, future reds Fabio Borini and Xherdan Shaqiri, and ex-reds Javier Mascherano, Carl Medjani, Nikolay Mihaylov and John Arne Riise.

2015 - Diogo Jota made his debut for Portugal Under-21’s, winning his only cap as a Paços de Ferreira player in their 3-0 European Championships qualifying win in Israel, with Harry Wilson also appearing at this level that day.
2019 – Future red Ozan Kabak debuted for Turkey as they won a European Championships qualifier 2-0 in Andorra.
2020 – Future reds loanee Arthur Melo won his first cap for Brazil as a Juventus player, notching his first senior goal in their 2-0 World Cup qualifying win in Uruguay. Morgan Boyes, Roberto Firmino, Curtis Jones, Diogo Jota, Takumi Minamino, future reds Luis Díaz and Darwin Núñez, and ex-red Dejan Lovren all played for their countries that day.

2015 – Ex-red Carl Medjani scored while captaining Algeria in their 7-0 trouncing of Tanzania in a World Cup qualifier in Blida as he won his last cap as a Trabzonspor player. 1993 - Robbie Fowler was on target on his debut for England Under-21’s in their 4-0 European Championships qualifying win in San Marino. Future reds Academy coach Mike Sheron won his sixteenth and final cap at this level. On the same day, ex-red Dean Saunders netted for Wales as they were beaten 2-1 by Romania in a World Cup qualifier in Cardiff. Ian Rush partnered him up front. Meanwhile, future red Paul Ince bagged a brace, his only goals for England, as they thumped San Marino 7-1 in Bologna, although results elsewhere led England to miss out on the Finals in America.
1992 - Fowler scored a hat-trick on his debut for the Under-18’s as they beat Switzerland 7-2 at Vale Park, with Steve McManaman and Mike Sheron featuring for the Under-21’s.

2020 – The new AXA Training Centre in Kirkby was officially opened, having used Melwood as their training centre since the 1950’s.

2013 – Ex-reds keeper Charles Itandje featured as Cameroon beat Tunisia 4-1 in the second leg of their World Cup Play-off to reach the Finals in Brazil.

2004 - Ex-red Michael Owen moved into England’s all-time top twenty appearances ranking when he won his 66th cap in a 1-0 friendly defeat to Spain at his then club ground, the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu. Xabi Alonso, Jamie Carragher and future red Fernando Torres also featured in Spain’s 500th international fixture. Meanwhile, future red Mark González won his first cap as an Albacete Balompié player in Chile’s 2-1 World Cup qualifying defeat in Peru. It was his tenth international appearance to date. Salif Diao won his last cap as a reds player in Senegal’s 2-1 friendly defeat of Algeria in France. Milan Baroš, El-Hadji Diouf, Jerzy Dudek, Florent Sinama-Pongolle, future reds Yossi Benayoun, Ragnar Klavan, Dirk Kuyt, Javier Mascherano, Christian Poulsen and Andriy Voronin and ex-reds Jari Litmanen and Rigobert Song were all also in international action.

1998 – Jamie Carragher played for England Under-21’s as they lost a friendly 1-0 to the Czech Republic at Portman Road.
