Debuting at Anfield 1998 - Steven Gerrard made his reds bow as a last-minute substitute for Vegard Heggem in our 2-0 defeat of Blackburn Rovers at Anfield, which came courtesy of goals from Michael Owen and Paul Ince. 1913 - Winger Jackie Sheldon debuted in our 2-1 defeat of Tottenham Hotspur, with Jimmy Dawson grabbing his first reds goal and Tom Miller also on target. Ken Campbell saved a penalty from Jimmy Cantrell, who struck the visitors’ goal. 2006 - Young Moroccan forward Nabil El Zhar debuted as we were held to a goalless draw at home by Portsmouth, with Jamie Carragher stepping up into central midfield as we struggled to overcome an injury crisis. 1976 - Mark Lawrenson played his first game at Anfield, nearly five years before signing for the reds. He appeared for Preston North End in an FA Cup First Round replay, as they beat Crewe Alexandra 3-0. Recent milestones 2016 – Forward Ben Woodburn became the club’s youngest ever goalscorer aged 17 years 45 days, scoring his only reds goal as we beat Leeds United 2-0 in a League Cup Quarter-final encounter at Anfield. Divock Origi had handed us the lead with just under a quarter of an hour remaining before Woodburn struck. 2017 – Emre Can reached a century of League games for the reds as we won 3-0 at Stoke City. Sadio Mané opened the scoring, with substitute Mohamed Salah adding a late brace. God has left the building 2001 - Robbie Fowler was sold to Leeds United for a reported £11m. He had notched 171 goals in 330 reds games in this first spell, and left with UEFA Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and two League Cup winners’ medals from this first spell. He only played 33 times in fourteen months at Elland Road, netting fourteen times before moving on again to Manchester City. A good and bad day for Stoke 2000 - We secured our biggest ever away win, and Stoke City’s record home defeat, as we triumphed 8-0 in the Fourth Round of the Worthington Cup. 27,109 attended the game – a then record at their new Britannia Stadium. They struggled to keep up, with the scoreboard at one time flashing up 9-0! It was also a game of several firsts, as Richie Partridge and Stephen Wright both made their first-team debuts, with Markus Babbel bagging his first reds goal and Christian Ziege on target for the second and last time. Robbie Fowler grabbed a hat-trick, including a penalty, with our other goals coming from Vladimír Šmicer, Sami Hyypiä and Danny Murphy. Another derby win 2009 - We won 2-0 at Goodison, securing our third straight victory in this fixture. We opened the scoring when Joseph Yobo deflected a speculative Javier Mascherano strike past Tim Howard, with Dirk Kuyt adding a late second after Pepe Reina had pulled off a spectacular double save. A win at the Bridge 2011 – We won 2-0 at Chelsea in the Fifth Round of the League Cup, with Andy Carroll having a penalty saved. Maxi Rodríguez struck before Martin Kelly headed in his only reds goal. Lucas Leiva ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in this game, thus ruling him out for the rest of the season. Half ton doc 1980 – David Johnson scored his fiftieth League goal for the reds as we won 4-2 at Sunderland, with Sammy Lee nabbing a brace and Terry McDermott also on target. Also recently 2015 – James Milner scored from the spot to secure a 1-0 victory over Swansea City at Anfield. 2014 – Right-back Glen Johnson headed his ninth and last reds goal late on to beat Stoke City at Anfield after Rickie Lambert’s effort had rebounded off the crossbar. A change that backfired 1975 - We changed our usual routine by not staying overnight in a hotel before our game at home to Norwich City. We immediately returned to the usual routine following our 3-1 defeat, with Emlyn Hughes netting our consolation. Ex-reds reserve Ted MacDougall scored, with World Cup winner Martin Peters netted one of his fourteen strikes against the reds, and Colin Suggett bagging one of his four goals past us. This was one of just eleven home League defeats we suffered throughout the whole of the 1970’s. A century against the Gunners 1969 - Arsenal won 1-0 at Anfield in a top-flight fixture, our hundredth meeting in all competitions, including 21 when they were known as Woolwich Arsenal. Off 1980 - Reserves centre-back Dave Watson left for Norwich City for £50,000, rising to £200,000. He went on to make 256 appearances for the Canaries, leading them to the Milk Cup in 1985 and the Second Division title a year later. 2017 – Ki-Jana Hoever was dismissed for Netherlands Under-16’s as they lost 2-1 to Brazil in Florida, with fellow future red Ryan Gravenberch also featuring. Trebles for and against 1930 - Gordon Hodgson scored the seventh of his seventeen reds hat-tricks as we thumped Sheffield United 6-1 at Anfield. Inside-left Archie McPherson added a brace, while Jim Smith was also on target. Outside-right Danny McRorie made his debut in this game, as Jimmy Dunne bagged one of his eleven strikes against the reds with keeper Arthur Riley reaching a century of League outings for the reds. 1902 - We also faced the Blades in another First Division fixture, when we lost 2-0 at Bramall Lane. 1924 - Joe Bradford bagged a treble for Birmingham City in their 5-2 win at St. Andrews, three of his fifteen goals past us, with Harry Chambers and Dick Forshaw on target for the away side and left-winger Billy Chalmers making his reds bow, while centre-half Walter Wadsworth made his 200th League appearance for us. Bradford remains City’s record scorer against the reds with fifteen. Percy Barton and Ernie Islip also netted for the Blues. European stalemate 1972 - We held Dynamo Berlin to a goalless draw in East Germany in the first leg of our UEFA Cup Third Round tie with the reds caught offside on eighteen occasions. We won the return 3-1 to continue towards our first European trophy. Against the Sky Blues We have entertained Coventry City twice on this day in history. 1986 - Jan Mølby netted a penalty and John Wark also struck as we won our First Division fixture 2-0, just three days after he had struck a treble of spot kicks past the Sky Blues in a Milk Cup tie also at Anfield. 1977 - David Fairclough and Phil Neal, from the spot, scored as we were held to a 2-2 draw in the Fourth Round of the League Cup. Boss Bob Paisley was presented with his OBE by the Queen at Buckingham Palace earlier that day. We won the replay three weeks later as we went all the way to our first ever Final in this competition that season. Knocked out 1995 - We lost our grip on the Coca-Cola Cup when future Blue Steve Watson grabbed the only goal of the game late on for Newcastle United in our Fourth Round tie at Anfield. Signing on 1994 - Keeper Mark Prudhoe signed on loan from Stoke City. He never made our first team but sat on our bench eight times. He is now working as a coach in Sunderland’s Academy. 1963 – Keeper Billy Molyneux signed as a professional. He played just one senior game as Bill Shankly fielded a team of eleven reserves in our League match at Wolverhampton Wanderers in April 1965, which came only five days before the FA Cup Final. International goalscorers 1961 - Ian St. John bagged a brace in Scotland’s 4-2 extra-time World Cup play-off defeat by Czechoslovakia played at the Stade du Heysel in Brussels. 1994 - Ex-red Ronnie Rosenthal netted in Israel’s 4-3 friendly defeat of Cyprus in Jerusalem. 1997 - Future red Harry Kewell struck as Australia drew 2-2 with Iran in a World Cup play-off in Melbourne, which meant that they missed out on the World Cup in France on the away goals rule. 2007 – Future red Jonjo Shelvey netted for England Under-16’s in the Sky Sports Victory Shield as they beat Scotland 2-1 in Falkirk. He actually struck in all three games as England claimed the trophy. 2022 – Future red Cody Gakpo scored in his third consecutive game for the Netherlands, his last goal as a PSV Eindhoven player as they beat host nation Qatar 2-0 in a World Cup Finals group game, with Virgil van Dijk captaining the side. On the same day, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jordan Henderson faced ex-reds Joe Allen, Danny Ward, Neco Williams and Harry Wilson as England beat Wales 3-0, with future reds Under-21’s coach Rob Page in charge of the Welsh. Future reds midfielder Patrik Farkas played for Hungary Under-17’s on the same day. Happy birthdays 1962 - Alan Irvine was born in Broxburn. The Scot only made four substitute appearances for the reds after signing from Falkirk for £75,000 in October 1986. He returned north the following August to join Dundee United. 1918 - Left-winger Doug McAvoy was born. He only made two senior reds appearances after signing from his hometown club Kilmarnock in December 1947 for £7,000, moving back to Scotland to join Queen Of The South in September 1949. Into seventh 2021 – Mohamed Salah came seventh in the annual Ballon d’Or award for the best player in Europe, with ex-reds Raheem Sterling and Luis Suárez appearing in fifteenth and seventeenth places, respectively. On the same day, Salah was named as Football Supporters’ Association Men’s Player of the Year for the second time. Youngsters in action 2003 - Three young reds appeared in the Under-20’s World Championship Finals in the United Arab Emirates. Zak Whitbread played in the USA’s 3-1 defeat of Paraguay, Darren Potter appeared as the Republic of Ireland beat Saudi Arabia 2-1, and John Welsh and future reds Andy Lonergan, James Milner and Gary O’Neil all featured in England’s 1-0 defeat by Japan. 2012 – Jordan Rossiter captained England Under-16’s as their 1-0 defeat of Scotland in Burton saw them win the Victory Shield for the twelfth consecutive year, with future red Joe Gomez also featuring. 2018 – Future red Mateusz Musiałowski won his fourth and last cap for Poland Under-16’s in their 4-0 defeat of Northern Ireland. 2017 – Fulham’s Fábio Carvalho played for England Under-16’s as they beat the USA 1-0 in Florida, with Ryan Gravenberch from Ajax featuring as the Netherlands lost 2-1 to Brazil in Florida at the same level. Tens of caps 1978 - Four current or future reds reached international milestones. Kenny Dalglish won his sixtieth cap as Scotland won a European Championships qualifier 1-0 in Portugal, while ex-red Joey Jones made his twentieth appearance as Wales beat Turkey 1-0 in another qualifier at his home ground in Wrexham. Phil Thompson played his tenth game for England, while his former clubmate Kevin Keegan won his fortieth cap as England beat Czechoslovakia 1-0 in a friendly at Wembley. Other reds games 1989 – We lost 2-0 at Sheffield Wednesday, although we remained top of the table. David Hirst struck one of his four goals against the reds, with Dalian Atkinson netting the first of his four. 1958 – Ipswich Town beat us 2-0 in a Second Division fixture at Portman Road. 1952 – Jimmy Payne bagged a brace as Blackpool held us to a 2-2 draw at Anfield. Ernest Taylor nabbed one of his five strikes past us, with Bill Perry also on target. 1947 – We lost 2-0 at Manchester City. 1919 – Harry Lewis was on target as Preston North End won 2-1 in L4, with Billy Halligan equalising almost immediately. Harry Chambers saw a penalty saved before Simpson Bainbridge struck the winner. Moving on 2010 – Former reds reserves coach Antonio Gómez Pérez was sacked as Head Coach of Real Valladolid after just five months in the job. 2014 – Ex-reds left-winger Albert Riera had his contract with Udinese terminated, having attended a poker tournament rather than reporting for a match. 2022 – Kolo Touré was appointed Manager of Wigan Athletic but only lasted two months in the role. Brad’s record 2008 – Ex-reds keeper Brad Friedel made a record 167th consecutive Premier League appearance as Aston Villa were held to a goalless draw at home by Fulham. -
Michael’s European record 2002 - Michael Owen scored his fifteenth away goal in Europe, which remains a club record, as we beat Vitesse Arnhem 1-0 at their Gelredome in the Third Round of the UEFA Cup. Surprisingly, this was our first game in the Netherlands on a club ground, and our first win in the country. Beating the Gunners 2004 - Neil Mellor grabbed a dramatic last-gasp winner as we beat Arsenal 2-1, his first League strike. Xabi Alonso had opened the scoring with his first Anfield goal before Patrick Vieira rounded off a slick Arsenal move to equalise. Antonio Núñez came on as a substitute for Florent Sinama-Pongolle to make his reds debut. Porto downed 2007 - We thumped Porto 4-1 at Anfield in a Champions League group game to keep us on track to qualify for the knock-out phase. Steve Finnan played his 200th reds game, and fiftieth in Europe for the club, as Fernando Torres struck his first two European goals for the reds before the scoreline was boosted by a late penalty converted by Steven Gerrard and a Peter Crouch header. This was our 150th game in the European Cup, including qualifiers. Future red Raul Meireles came off the bench for the visitors, with Lisandro López bagging the first of his two goals against the reds. Red farewells 2015 – Legendary defender Gerry Byrne died. He was the hero of our first FA Cup triumph in 1965 when he played for 117 minutes of the final against Leeds United at Wembley with a broken collar bone sustained in an early challenge by Bobby Collins. He also won two League titles and the FA Charity Shield in his eleven years at Anfield, making a total of 333 reds appearances and scoring four times. On the same day, Dean Saunders was sacked as Manager of Chesterfield after just six months in charge. Most recently 2020 – We were held to a 1-1 draw behind closed doors at Brighton & Hove Albion. Diogo Jota netted with the reds having two goals ruled out by VAR for offside. Neal Maupay missed a first-half penalty for the home side, but Pascal Groß converted a controversially awarded stoppage-time spot kick. Ferri cross the Mersey 1998 - Jean-Michel Ferri signed from Istanbulspor for £1.5m, becoming Gérard Houllier’s first signing. He only ever made two substitute appearances before leaving for Sochaux-Montbéliard for the same fee, having been rumoured to be Le Boss’s mole in the dressing room. 1927 - Bill Murray signed from Clydebank, netting once in four reds outings before moving to Barrow in January 1930, where he became their skipper. 1945 – South African winger Bob Priday signed from Cape Town City. His chances were limited to forty reds games, as he was behind Billy Liddell in the pecking order. He notched seven times while at Anfield, before moving on to Blackburn Rovers in March 1949. A rare number two 1992 - Mike Marsh netted his first League goal past Nigel Martyn as we beat Crystal Palace 5-0 at Anfield. He remained the most recent player to score for us in the number two shirt in a first-class match until Álvaro Arbeloa’s solo effort at Reading in April 2007. Steve McManaman bagged a brace, while Ronnie Rosenthal and Don Hutchison were also on target that day. We only had one Song 2000 - Rigobert Song was sold to West Ham United for £2.5m. He had made 38 appearances in nearly two years at Anfield since signing from Italian club Salernitana for £2.6m, without getting on the scoresheet. Shanks victorious 1959 – Bill Shankly’s Huddersfield Town beat the manager-less reds 1-0 at Leeds Road. We fell behind to a Les Massie goal while skipper and centre-back Dick White was off the field injured, one of his four strikes past us. Happy birthdays 1978 - Ex-reserves striker Jon Newby was born in Warrington. He only made four substitute appearances while at Anfield, as well as staying on the bench on a further five occasions, moving on to Bury for free in March 2001. On the same day, future reds coach Joe Corrigan played for England B as they beat Czechoslovakia 1-0 in Prague. 1994 – Swedish winger Kristoffer Peterson was born in Gothenburg. He arrived from Sävedalens IF in January 2011, signing a contract extension three years later. However, he left for Utrecht in August 2014. In charge 1994 - Steve McMahon was appointed Swindon Town Manager. He was in charge for 201 games as the Robins were first relegated from the First Division and then bounced straight back as champions. He was sacked in September 1998. 2007 - Ex-reds reserves forward Paul Jewell took over as boss of Derby County, who were firmly rooted to the bottom of the Premiership. He resigned in December 2008 having failed to save them from relegation. 2013 – Recent Assistant Manager Sean O’Driscoll was sacked as Bristol City boss, having been in charge for just ten months. 2022 – Former Academy coach Michael Beale was appointed Manager of Rangers. He was sacked after eleven months in charge. Cally for England 1962 - Ian Callaghan won the first of his three England Under-23’s caps in their 5-0 friendly thumping of Greece at St. Andrews. Shot down at Arsenal 1931 - Jack Lambert scored a second-half hat-trick for Arsenal as they trounced us 6-0, three of his seven goals past us, with John Charlton playing his third and final reds game. David Jack struck the last two of his nine goals against the reds, with Joe Hulme scoring one of his ten past us. The Gunners were pipped to the League title by our blue neighbours that season. 1970 - We lost another top-flight meeting at Highbury, going down 2-0. John Radford netted one of his seven goals against the reds, with George Graham coming off the bench to bag one of his four past us. Earning our Spurs We have faced Tottenham Hotspur three times in top flight matches on this day in history, resulting in one win, a draw and two defeats. 2010 – We lost 2-1 in north London, despite Jermain Defoe missing a penalty. Martin Škrtel opened the scoring before putting through his own net in the second half. Jamie Carragher dislocated his shoulder late on before Aaron Lennon bagged an injury-time winner. 2012 – We lost by the same score there, with Aaron Lennon and Gareth Bale both scoring early on. A Steven Gerrard header was cleared off the line by Lennon but rebounded off Bale for an own goal after the break. 1987 - We won 2-0 at White Hart Lane thanks to goals from Steve McMahon and Craig Johnston, in what was Kenny Dalglish’s hundredth League game in charge as Paul Walsh appeared for the 112nd and last time. Steve Hodge was sent off for elbowing Ray Houghton inside the first twenty minutes, while Gary Gillespie broke Spurs’ Neil Ruddock’s leg in a challenge. The home side were being managed for the first time by Terry Venables. Amazingly, this was our first victory on this day in history at the fourteenth attempt. 1964 - Roger Hunt struck in a 1-1 draw at Anfield, with Jimmy Greaves netting one of his twelve goals against the reds. A bad day to meet the Villains We have faced Aston Villa three times in the top flight on this day in history, winning just once. 1993 - Robbie Fowler and Jamie Redknapp netted as we won 2-1 at Anfield, with Dalian Atkinson bagging the last of his four goals against us. 1914 - Villa left with a 6-3 win, with Jimmy Nicholl netting a brace and Tom Miller also on target for the reds. Full-back Bob Crawford played his 114th and final reds game. Harry Hampton netted one of his fifteen goals against the reds, with Joe Bache nabbing the final one of his nine past us, and Clem Stephenson scoring one of his five, with Harold Edgley netting twice and Tommy Barber also on target. 1903 - We lost 2-1 at Villa Park, with Jack Parkinson nabbing our consolation. Beaten 2018 – We lost 2-1 to Paris Saint-Germain in our UEFA Champions League group game at the Parc des Princes. Juan Bernat and Neymar put the French side ahead before James Milner converted a penalty in first-half stoppage time. We went on to qualify from the group, en route to Final glory in Madrid. 1967 - Ferencvárosi beat us 1-0 in Hungary with a deflected Sándor Katona goal on a snowbound pitch in a Fairs Cup Third Round meeting as half-back Willie Stevenson played his 241st and last reds game. Unfortunately, we lost the Anfield return by the same score. 1981 – We went down 1-0 at Southampton to a late Steve Moran goal. The home side included three former England captains – Alan Ball, Mick Channon and ex-red Kevin Keegan. 1953 – We lost 3-1 at Cardiff City despite Louis Bimpson opening the scoring. Wilf Grant and Ken Chisholm each netted one of their four goals against the reds, with George Edwards also on target. 1925 – We lost 1-0 at home to Bury, the only time the Shakers have won at Anfield in 26 attempts to date. 1908 – Manchester City won 3-1 in L4 with Sam Bowyer bagging our goal. Keeper Sam Hardy had to go off at half time due to injury, with left-back Billy Dunlop taking over the gloves. George Dorsett struck the last of his five goals past us, with Jimmy Conlin and Billy Jones also on target. 1896 – We were beaten 2-0 at Nottingham Forest’s old Town Ground stadium. Into third 2005 – Steven Gerrard was voted third in the annual Ballon d’Or award for the best player in Europe, behind Barcelona’s Ronaldinho and Frank Lampard from Chelsea. Jamie Carragher finished jont twentieth with Luis García in equal 23rd. At the World Cup 2022 – Alisson Becker played as Brazil beat Switzerland 1-0 in a World Cup group game in Qatar. On the same day, Rigobert Song’s Cameroon drew 3-3 with a Serbia side that included ex-red Marko Grujić. Meanwhile, Darwin Núñez and ex-reds Sebastián Coates and Luis Suárez all featured in Uruguay’s 2-0 defeat by Portugal. Sharing the shield 2003 - Young red Jordan Holmes skippered England Under-16’s as they drew 1-1 with their Scottish counterparts at Hampden Park. This result ensured that the two countries shared the Victory Shield, ahead of Northern Ireland and Wales. On the same day, future red Javier Mascherano appeared for Argentina Under-20’s in the World Championship Finals as they beat Spain 2-1 in a group game in the United Arab Emirates. Other reds game 1936 – Derby County held us to a 3-3 draw at Anfield. The Rams’ Jack Parker put through his own net, before Sammy Crooks levelled from the spot, one of his six goals against the reds. Berry Nieuwenhuys and Fred Howe then put us ahead, but Dally Dunkin and Reg Stockill struck for the visitors. Moving on 2013 – Three young reds left the club on loan. Centre-forward Adam Morgan joined Yeovil Town, with midfielder Craig Roddan moving to Carlisle United and winger Kristoffer Peterson crossing the Mersey to join up with Tranmere Rovers. 2016 – Future reds First-team Coach Shaun Cooper signed for Poole Town, going on to score once in 31 games for the National League South side. A new website 2002 - The club launched its very first non-English language website, a Chinese-language Hong Kong site. Beaten by the Austrians 1934 - We lost 2-0 to the Austrian national team in a friendly at Anfield. They were a very fine side at the time, having finished fourth in the World Cup Finals in Italy earlier that year. Also in international action 1992 – Bjørn Tore Kvarme featured for Norway Under-21’s as they thumped Malaysia 6-0 in Kuala Lumpur. -

Reds born 1946 - Brian Hall was born in Glasgow. He signed for the reds in July 1968 fresh from graduating university, and scored 21 goals in 224 games, helping us to claim a League title, UEFA Cup, FA Cup and FA Charity Shield. His most memorable moment came when he bagged his first reds goal, the FA Cup Semi-final winner against Everton at Old Trafford in March 1971, also scoring at the same stage against Leicester City three years later. He moved on to Plymouth Argyle in July 1976, later finishing his playing career with Burnley, but he returned to Anfield in 1991 to take up the post of Public Relations Manager, a position he held until retiring in 2012. He died in July 2015. 2002 – Keeper Oscar Kelly was born in Liverpool. He joined the Academy at Under-9’s level, turning pro in September 2021. He moved on to Gulf United in Dubai in July 2025. 2006 – Centre-half Noah Adekoya was born in Liverpool. He arrived from Burnley in January 2026. 1960 - Midfielder Kevin MacDonald was born in Inverness. He played 64 reds games, scoring five times, following his £400,000 capture from Leicester City in November 1984. He helped us to the League and FA Cup double in 1986, with skipper Alan Hansen calling him “far and away our most influential player.” He moved to Coventry City in June 1989 after a number of loan spells away from Anfield while recovering from a broken leg. 1944 - Forward Bobby Graham was born in Motherwell. He netted 42 times in 136 reds games after signing professional terms in November 1961 but often found himself behind first Ian St. John and then Kevin Keegan in the Anfield pecking order. He left for Coventry City in March 1972 for a £70,000 fee. 1884 – Inside-left Bill McPherson was born in Beith, Ayrshire. He signed from St. Mirren in 1906, bagging seventeen goals in 55 outings including one on his debut against Woolwich Arsenal, before returning north of the border to join Rangers in May 1908. 1887 - Forward Wilf Bartrop was born in Worksop. He arrived from Barnsley for £900 in May 1914, playing three games before joining the Royal Field Artillery in 1915. He was killed in wartime action in November 1918. 1936 - John Price was born in Aberystwyth. He signed from Fordhouse youth club in October 1954, but played just one senior game, at left-back at Leeds United in November 1955, before moving to Aston Villa in March 1957. Stevie sets another record 2006 - Steven Gerrard struck his fourteenth goal in the European Cup as we beat PSV Eindhoven 2-0 at Anfield. In the process, he joined Ian Rush as our top goalscorer in Europe’s premier club competition. Peter Crouch grabbed a late second as we comfortably secured top spot in the group, although this came at the expense of injuries to Xabi Alonso, Mark González and Jermaine Pennant. John Arne Riise reached a half-century of reds appearances in the UEFA Champions League. Beginning and end 1952 - Ronnie Moran made his reds bow in a 3-2 defeat at Derby County. Jack Smith scored his fourteenth and last goal for the reds, with Billy Liddell adding a penalty. A Kenny Dalglish brace handed us a 2-0 win over Aston Villa, with our run coming to an end after 63 games. 2020 – That record was broken as we reached 64 home League games without defeat by beating Leicester City 3-0 behind closed doors, with this run eventually reaching 68 fixtures. Gini Wijnaldum played his 200th reds game, with Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino both nodded in after Jonny Evans had headed into his own net. Shanks on the Kop 1975 - Ex-reds boss Bill Shankly stood on the Kop as we were held to a 1-1 draw by Coventry City. John Toshack grabbed our goal. 1981 – A memorial service was held for our former boss at Liverpool Anglican Cathedral, just under two months after his death. Mighty Mouse against the reds 1977 - Kevin Keegan played for Hamburger SV against Liverpool for the first time, in the first leg of the UEFA Super Cup, as we held the Germans to a 1-1 draw at the Volksparkstadion. David Fairclough bagged our goal, and our thumping 6-0 win in the second leg saw us claim this trophy for the first of three times to date. Held by boys 2012 – We were held to a 2-2 draw by Swiss side BSC Young Boys in our UEFA Europa League group game at Anfield, with the visitors twice coming from behind. Jonjo Shelvey headed us in front, with our other goal coming from a rare Joe Cole strike. Joy against Leeds We have faced Leeds United three times on this day in history, without tasting defeat. 1969 - Ron Yeats struck as we held the Yorkshire side to a top-flight draw at Elland Road, with Johnny Giles having a penalty saved by Tommy Lawrence, although he was also on target with one of his five goals against the reds. 1972 - Kevin Keegan nabbed the only goal of our League Cup Fourth Round replay at the same venue in the final minute. Reds bosses 1978 - 1950’s wing-half Bobby Campbell was named Manager of Bristol Rovers. He led them to just eleven wins in 46 games in charge as they struggled in the old Second Division. 1994 - 1980’s midfielder Kevin MacDonald was appointed Caretaker Manager of Leicester City after Brian Little’s controversial departure for Aston Villa. He was only in charge for four games, before Mark McGhee took over. Disappointments 1983 - Kenny Dalglish was on target shortly after half time as we were held to a 1-1 draw by Second Division Fulham in a League Cup Third Round replay, with the game going into extra time after Kevin Lock’s late equaliser from the spot, but no further goals were scored meaning that we had to play our first ever second replay in this competition. Sammy Lee played his 200th game for the club. 1997 - Ashley Ward bagged the only goal of the game as newly promoted Barnsley won at Anfield to secure their first ever victory over us in L4. 2008 – We were held to a goalless draw by Fulham, with sections of the Anfield crowd expressing their dissatisfaction with Lucas Leiva’s performance. On the same day, future red Glen Johnson netted a left-footed thirty-yard screamer in Portsmouth’s 2-2 draw with Hull City at Fratton Park that was later named as the BBC’s Goal of the Season. International farewells 1953 - Future red Doug Rudham won his only senior cap for South Africa as they lost a friendly 3-1 to Portugal in Lisbon. 2008 – Future reds keeper Loris Karius played for Germany Under-16’s for the third and last time as they beat Tunisia 1-0 in a friendly. Thommo the skipper 1979 - Phil Thompson captained England for the first time as they beat Bulgaria 2-0 in a European Championships qualifier at Wembley. Ray’s Clemence and Kennedy both also played. Signing on 1930 – Outside-right Danny McRorie signed from Morton for £1,500. He bagged six goals in 35 reds games, moving on to Rochdale in October 1933. International goalscorers 1997 - Future red Harry Kewell netted his first goal for Australia as they drew the first leg of their World Cup Play-off 1-1 in Iran. 1930 - Gordon Hodgson struck his only goal for England in their 4-0 defeat of Wales in Wrexham in the British International Championships. Future red Ernie Blenkinsop also played for the English. For Mr Bowen 1976 - The reds took part in a testimonial match for Dave Bowen, drawing 2-2 with Northampton Town at the County Ground with Emlyn Hughes and Ian Callaghan on the scoresheet. Bowen was Manager during their only season in the top flight, as well as leading the Cobblers to the Third Division title, and later taking charge of Wales. A reds treble for Young England 2001 - David Mannix, David Raven and Mark Smyth all played for England Under-17’s in their friendly against Poland at Peterborough United’s London Road Stadium. Mannix and Smyth both scored in a 6-0 thumping. Also in international action 1967 – Peter Thompson and Roger Hunt both played for England as they beat Northern Ireland 2-0 at Wembley in a European Championships qualifier that also counted for the British International Championships. 2000 – Future red Alberto Aquilani played as Italy Under-16’s were held to a goalless draw by Argentina. 2003 – Roy Hodgson took charge of the United Arab Emirates for their 3-0 defeat of Sri Lanka in an AFC Asian Cup qualifier in Dubai. 2022 – Ibrahima Konaté played for France as they beat Australia 4-1 in their opening World Cup group game in Qatar. They eventually went on to reach the Final. Award winner 2021 – Former Academy Coach Neil Critchley was named Manager of the Season at the North West Football Awards, having led Blackpool to promotion from League One earlier that year. -
Trebles away from home 1998 - Robbie Fowler scored a hat-trick after Paul Ince had headed the opener as we won 4-2 at Aston Villa, who were unbeaten in their first twelve games, their most successful ever start to a League campaign. This was Gérard Houllier’s first win in sole charge. Villa’s Stan Collymore was sent off in the second half for striking out at Michael Owen, while Dion Dublin had a penalty saved by David James to deny him his hat-trick, although he still netted two of his seven goals past us. Steve Harkness was playing his hundredth League game for the reds. 1936 - Centre-forward Fred Howe netted a hat-trick as we won 5-2 at Manchester United, our only ever treble at Old Trafford, with Alf Hanson netting and right-half Harry Eastham bagging his first reds goal. 1993 - Andy Cole bagged a treble inside the opening half hour as we lost 3-0 at Newcastle United, all inside the first half hour, the first of his eleven goals against the reds, a Premier League record to date. This was Torben Piechnik’s 24th and final reds game, and only one of that season, while former reds Peter Beardsley, Barry Venison and Mike Hooper all featured for the Magpies, under Kevin Keegan. This was later alleged to be one of the games ‘thrown’ by Bruce Grobbelaar. 1903 - We also played the Geordies in the top flight, when a Dickie Morris goal was enough to hand us victory at Anfield. A classic derby comeback 1970 - We came back from 2-0 down with twenty minutes remaining to win the Anfield derby. An Alan Whittle lob and Joe Royle header, one of his five goals past us, put the reigning champions in a strong position before a Steve Heighway belter brought us back into the game. John Toshack headed his first reds goal in just his second game to level the match, before Chris Lawler won the game 3-2 with a shot that went in off the post. A derby first The other two derbies staged on this day ended less happily. 1896 - The Blues left Anfield with a goalless draw. Alf Milward was sent off for the visitors for charging John McCartney to become the only player to be sent off in a derby until Terry McDermott and Gary Stanley 83 years later. The game was described in the press at the time as “utterly unworthy of the best traditions of both organisations and never rose above the standard of mediocrity”. 1994 - On-loan Duncan Ferguson bagged the first of his five goals against the reds, with Paul Rideout also on target as we lost 2-0 at Goodison Park in what was Joe Royle’s first game in charge of the Blues. Winning seven goal thrillers We have twice won by the odd goal in seven at Anfield on this day in history. 1931 - Manchester City went home without the points after we had gone in 2-1 down at the break, with right-back Bob Done bagging a brace that included a penalty and Archie McPherson and Gordon Hodgson also netting. Dave Halliday struck the last of his thirteen goals against the reds, with Bobby Marshall scoring one of his five past us and Fred Tilson one of his six. 1959 - Leyton Orient lost by the same score in our Second Division encounter, with outside-right Fred Morris bagging a brace, his final goals for the club, and Jimmy Melia and Dave Hickson on target as we remained manager-less. Tommy Johnston struck twice for the visitors, with Dennis Sorrell also netting as half-back Barry Wilkinson appeared for the 79th and last time. A European comeback 2017 – We raced into a three-goal lead at Sevilla in our UEFA Champions League group game, with Roberto Firmino netting twice and Sadio Mané also on target in the first half hour. However, French striker Wissam Ben Yedder bagged a brace after the break, including one from the spot. Guido Pizarro scored a stoppage-time equaliser for the home side with James Milner coming off the bench to reach a century of reds appearances. Martin milestones 2009 – We were held to a 2-2 draw at Anfield by Manchester City. Martin Škrtel opened the scoring after the break with his first reds goal, with substitute Yossi Benayoun grabbing an equaliser after we had fallen 2-1 behind, before himself being replaced. Emmanuel Adebayor bagged one of his five goals against the reds to date, with Stephen Ireland also on target. 2015 – Škrtel scored his eighteenth and last goal for the club as we thumped City 4-1 at the Etihad Stadium. We took a three-goal lead as Eliaquim Mangala put through his own net before Philippe Coutinho scored and then Roberto Firmino netted his first reds strike. Sergio Agüero pulled one back on the stroke of half time, one of his seven goals past us. Evans off 1957 - Forward John Evans was sold to Third Division South outfit Colchester United. He was signed at the fourth attempt from Charlton Athletic in December 1953 for £12,500, but we suffered relegation in his first season at Anfield. His greatest moment with the reds came when he netted all our goals in a 5-3 defeat of Bristol Rovers in September 1954. Overall, he struck 53 times in 107 reds games. Off on loan 1987 - Reserves centre-back Mark Seagraves joined Norwich City on a temporary basis. He made three appearances for the Canaries before returning to Anfield. 1998 - David Thompson joined First Division Swindon Town on loan. He played ten times for the Robins in his ten weeks at the County Ground, picking up four yellow cards. Happy birthdays 1977 - Ex-reserves midfielder Jamie Cassidy was born in Liverpool. He never made the break-through to our first team, although he had featured in our victorious FA Youth Cup campaign in 1996. He joined Cambridge United in July 1999, where he again struggled to make an impact, before moving into non-League football. 1939 – Scottish full-back Bobby Thomson was born in Menstrie. He signed from Partick Thistle for £7,000 in December 1962 but only made eight first-team appearances before moving on to Luton Town in August 1965. Management moves 2022 – Future reds coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst was sacked as Manager of Rangers after a year in charge. He had led them to the Scottish Cup as well as the UEFA Europa League Final and group stage of the UEFA Champions League, having led them to 42 wins in 68 matches. 2015 – Former Assistant Manager Pako Ayestarán left as Manager of Mexican side Club Santos Laguna by mutual consent. 2012 – Rafael Benítez was appointed Interim Manager of Chelsea. He led them to the UEFA Europa League title as well as qualification for the Champions League, despite suffering widespread abuse from their supporters. 2001 - Ex-reds defender Richard Money was installed as the new first team coach of Coventry City. He moved from being Director of the Sky Blues’ youth academy. 1998 - Roy Hodgson was sacked as Manager of Blackburn Rovers, with the Ewood Park outfit sitting rock bottom of the table. He was appointed in June 1997, leading them to sixth and into the UEFA Cup in his first season, a significant improvement on their previous campaign when they ended in thirteenth. 2007 – He took charge of his last match as Finland boss as they drew their last Euro 2008 qualifier 0-0 in Portugal, so missing out on a place in the Finals that a win would have given them. Sami Hyypiä and ex-reds Jari Litmanen and Daniel Sjölund all played. The prince departs 1997 - Paul Dalglish signed for Newcastle United on a free transfer. He only scored twice in just thirteen games for the Magpies, before joining Norwich City. Strikers on target 2007 - Peter Crouch and Andriy Voronin both netted in European Championships qualifiers, with England losing 3-2 at home to Croatia and Voronin’s first goal as a reds player helping the Ukraine to a 2-2 draw with France in Kyiv. Darwin Núñez scored in his fourth consecutive game, bagging a brace as Uruguay beat Bolivia 3-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Montevideo, with Luis Suárez winning his only cap as a Grêmio player. Neco Williams bagged his first goal for Wales since joining Nottingham Forest in their 1-1 draw with Türkiye in a European Championships qualifier in Cardiff, with Harvey Elliott scoring twice for England Under-21’s as they beat Northern Ireland 3-0 in a qualifier at Goodison Park. Meanwhile, Ben Doak had a spot-kick saved as Scotland Under-21’s were held to a goalless draw in a qualifier in Hungary, with Calum Scanlon featuring as England Under-19’s thrashed Mexico 7-1 to claim the Marbella Cup. Steve McManaman was playing in his 106th consecutive reds game but missed Wimbledon’s visit three days later. This game was postponed from a month earlier. Neil Ruddock reached a century of League outings for the reds. A new stadium 1999 - We played our first official game at Sunderland’s new Stadium Of Light, as goals from Michael Owen and Patrik Berger gave us a 2-0 win. A win at the Bridge 2011 – We won 2-1 at Chelsea when Maxi Rodríguez opened the scoring. Future red Daniel Sturridge equalised, with ex-Blue Glen Johnson nabbing the late winner. An unwelcome European record 2001 - An early Michael Owen strike counted for nothing when Barcelona treated the Anfield crowd to a virtuoso display of attacking football, winning 3-1 in our Champions League group game. This remains the joint highest number of goals we have conceded at home in European competition. Patrick Kluivert, Fabio Rochemback and Marc Overmars struck for the visitors. Half a millennium against 2004 - We conceded our 500th goal in the Premier League when Chris Riggott struck in our 2-0 defeat at Middlesbrough. Future red Bolo Zenden added the second. Al’s milestone 2021 – Alisson Becker reached a half century of clean sheets in the League as we thumped Arsenal 4-0 at Anfield. Sadio Mané headed in the opener before the break, with Diogo Jota, Mohamed Salah and Takumi Minamino all on target in the second half. 1965 – We were held to a goalless draw at Stoke City, with Ian St. John playing his 200th reds game. Double treble 1943 - Robert Beattie and future reds Manager Don Welsh both scored hat-tricks as we thumped Southport 9-0 in a Wartime League game at Anfield. Berry Nieuwenhuys, Cyril Done and Jackie Campbell netted the others. Tommy in 1959 – Left-half Tommy Leishman signed from St. Mirren for £10,000, having won the Scottish Cup with them. He helped us back to the First Division in 1962, although he then only made eleven top-flight appearances before returning north of the border, to Hibernian, in January 1963 after a total of seven goals in 118 reds games, including our first ever League Cup strike. Reds firsts 1897 – Forward Pat Finnerhan struck his only reds goal in the final minute, the only score in our top-flight meeting with Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield. 1937 – Irish right-back Billy Hood played the first of his three reds games as we lost a top-flight encounter with Huddersfield Town 1-0 at Anfield. Four against Vale 1991 - We won 4-1 at Port Vale in a League Cup Third Round replay, with Steve McManaman, Mark Walters, Ray Houghton and Dean Saunders grabbing our goals. Royal approval 2005 - Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall visited Anfield to meet participants in the Prince’s Trust football initiative. Births and death 1961 - Ex-reserves centre-back Dave Watson was born in Liverpool. He never broke through into the reds first team and went on to far greater success with Norwich City and across Stanley Park. 1993 – Former reserves forward Henoc Mukendi was born in Zaire. He joined the youth system in 2007, signing a new two-year contract in May 2012, but never managed to make the breakthrough, moving into non-League football. 1998 – Outside-right Fred Morris died. He bagged fourteen goals in 48 reds games after joining from Mansfield Town for £7,000 in May 1958, before moving to Crewe Alexandra for £4,000 in June 1960. On the move 1992 - Stan Collymore joined First Division Southend United from Crystal Palace for £150,000. He struck eighteen times in 33 games in his one season with the Shrimpers, before joining Nottingham Forest in a £2m deal in July 1993. 2017 – The departure of Andy Renshaw as Head of Physiotherapy was announced. Also recently 2010 – We beat West Ham United 3-0 at Anfield, with all the goals coming before the break. Ex-Hammer Glen Johnson opened the scoring before Dirk Kuyt converted a penalty, with Maxi Rodríguez also heading in. International goalscorers 1974 - John Toshack was on target as Wales thumped Luxembourg 5-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Swansea. Ray Clemence, Steve Heighway and Emlyn Hughes also played in qualifiers that day. 1929 – Forward Tosh Johnson bagged a brace as England thumped Wales 6-0 in the British International Championships at Stamford Bridge while winning his final cap as a Manchester City player. Jerzy Dudek and John Arne Riise were also in international action that day, as were future reds Yossi Benayoun, Steve Finnan, Paul Jones, Sotirios Kyrgiakos, Rob Page, Christian Poulsen, Andriy Voronin and Bolo Zenden, as well as ex-red Øyvind Leonhardsen. 2018 – Dominic Solanke netted a brace while winning his last England Under-21’s cap as a reds player in their 5-1 thrashing of Denmark in Esbjerg. On the same day, Danny Ward played for Wales for the first time since moving to Leicester City in their 1-0 friendly defeat in Albania, while Mamadou Sakho won his first cap as a Crystal Palace player as France beat Uruguay 1-0 in a friendly in Paris. Future red Diogo Jota was on target while skippering Portugal Under-21’s, winning his twentieth and last cap at this level as they lost 3-1 in a European Championships Play-off to Poland. Tom Clayton played for Scotland Under-19’s for the third and last time as they drew 2-2 with Sweden in a qualifier in Rhyl, while future red Cody Gakpo struck while winning his fifth and last cap for the Dutch Under-20’s as they beat Italy 3-2 in an Elite League group game. Ryan Gravenberch was on target for the Dutch Under-19’s in their 2-1 friendly defeat or Portugal in Armenia as fellow future red Jeremie Frimpong appeared for the third and final time at this level. Keeper Kai McKenzie-Lyle won his last cap as a reds player as Guyana lost a CONCACAF Nations League Qualifier 2-1 in French Guiana. Happy birthday Gary 1965 - Gary Ablett was born in Liverpool. He signed on at Anfield as a professional on his eighteenth birthday, going on to make 147 reds appearances, scoring just once – in only his second game. He helped us to two League titles, FA Cup and FA Charity Shield before being sold to Everton by Graeme Souness for £750,000 in January 1992, with whom he won a second FA Cup. He returned to the club in the summer of 2006 to take over as Reserve Team Manager, leading them to the national title in his second season, although he left at the end of the following campaign. He sadly died in January 2012, aged just 46. 1993 – Keeper Lawrence Vigouroux was born in Camden, north London. He left Tottenham Hotspur to join the reds in 2014, moving on to Swindon Town in July 2016 after a successful loan spell there. Taylor out 1959 - Phil Taylor resigned as Manager, paving the way for the arrival of Bill Shankly the following month. He had made 345 appearances as right-half before and after the war, netting 34 times and winning one League title, and captaining the side. He joined the coaching staff when he retired from playing in 1954, and became Manager two years later, staying in the job for three years. However, he has the unhappy distinction of being the only reds boss never to manage the side in the top flight. He said, “The strain of it all has made me very tired at times and I decided, great as is my love for Liverpool, to resign.” He led us to 76 victories in his 150 games in charge. Happy birthdays 1896 - Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers was born in Willington Quay, Northumberland. He signed on in April 1915 and struck 151 times in 339 reds games, helping us to back-to-back League titles in the early 1920’s. He was transferred to West Bromwich Albion in March 1928. 1972 - Aboubakar ‘Titi’ Camara was born in Conakry, Guinea. He scored ten times in 37 reds games after signing from Olympique de Marseille for £2.6m in June 1999, most famously the only goal of the game at home to West Ham United on the day his father died in October of that year. He was sold to the Hammers for £2.2m in December 2000, although he only made fourteen appearances for them, before being loaned to Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia. For Jackie 1922 – We beat Derby County 3-1 at Anfield in a testimonial match for Jackie Sheldon, who had recently retired after breaking his leg. Guest player Owen apparently scored all three of our goals. Sheldon grabbed twenty goals in 147 reds games after joining from Manchester United in November 1913 and played in our first ever FA Cup Final in 1914. Unfortunately, his name was forever tainted by being the go-between in our match-fixing scandal with Manchester United in April 1915. Two more legends honoured 2007 - Peter Beardsley and Graeme Souness were both inducted into the Football Museum’s Hall of Fame. Beardsley won two League titles, the FA Cup, and two FA Charity Shields while at Anfield, as well as 59 England caps and a ‘new’ Second Division title with Fulham. Souness claimed five League titles, three European Cups, four League Cups and three FA Charity Shields while with the reds, also winning 54 Scottish caps, a Second Division championship, Coppa Italia and Scottish League title as a player. However, he was later dogged by persistent knee trouble and allowed to join Premiership new-boys Portsmouth on a free transfer in June 2003. 1981 – Sports Therapist Iván Ortega was born. He joined the reds in the summer of 2009 from Celta de Vigo but moved on to Chelsea in July 2011. 2006 – Hungarian midfielder Patrik Farkas was born. He signed on in September 2026, having spent the previous four years at Blackburn Rovers. New technology 2014 – Chelsea won 2-1 in L4 with Emre Can opening the scoring with a deflected strike that was his first goal for the club. Gary Cahill’s equaliser was the first goal to be given at Anfield using goal-line technology. Diego Costa bagged the second-half winner, although we were denied a strong late penalty claim for handball. Other Anfield wins We have also seen off Leyton Orient and Preston North End in L4 on this day over the years. 1924 - We beat the Lilywhites 3-1 thanks to a brace from Dick Forshaw and an Archie Rawlings strike, with keeper John Jones making the first of just four senior appearances and Forshaw scoring in the first of eight consecutive matches. Elisha Scott was forced to miss out due to injury after 132 consecutive senior appearances. 1958 - Orient were beaten 3-0 in a Second Division meeting with Geoff Twentyman, Louis Bimpson and Jimmy Melia on target, with Melia’s strike being the club’s 4,000th goal in all competitions in what was Phil Taylor’s hundredth League game in charge as keeper Tommy Younger also reached a century of reds outings. Zico the boss 1996 - Phil Neal was appointed Manager of First Division Manchester City. He was in charge for less than two months, leading them to just two wins in his ten games in charge, before being replaced by ex-Nottingham Forest boss Frank Clark. Moving towards another trophy 1983 - We were held to a 1-1 League Cup draw at Fulham. Ian Rush equalised shortly after Kevin Lock had put the home side ahead from the spot, and it took us until a second replay to finally reach the Fourth Round. Joy in the north east at last 1902 - We won at Newcastle United for the first time after six previously unsuccessful attempts. Sam Raybould and Arthur Goddard netted in a 2-1 victory. Top of the table 1986 - We climbed to the summit of the First Division for the first time that season when goals from Ian Rush, Steve Nicol and Craig Johnston secured a 3-1 victory at Queens Park Rangers as Nicol reached a century of League outings for the reds. Bells foiled 2006 - Struggling striker Craig Bellamy had a weak penalty saved as we won a League Cup Fourth Round tie at Birmingham City, with Daniel Agger grabbing the only goal of the game. Unfortunately, the night was marred by a shoulder injury suffered by Momo Sissoko. In comes Lauri 2007 – Sixteen-year old Finnish forward Lauri Dalla Valle signed from Joensuun Iloiset Peli-Pojat for a reported £600,000, going on to sign a professional contract with the reds in September 2008. He moved to Fulham in August 2010 after just one brief substitute appearance as part of the deal that brought left-back Paul Konchesky to Anfield. Future reds on the move 1983 - Future reds keeper Mike Hooper signed for his hometown club Bristol City on a free transfer from non-League Mangotsfield. He only made three first-team appearances in three seasons at Ashton Gate, moving on to Wrexham in July 1985. 1994 - Øyvind Leonhardsen joined Wimbledon from Rosenborg BK for £650,000. He had struck twenty times in 63 League games for the perpetual Norwegian champions, spending three successful seasons with Wimbledon before joining the reds. On the same day, David Thompson officially signed for the reds as a professional. Another title 2009 - Liverpool and Adrian Valles won the 2009 Superleague Formula motor racing championship at Jarama in Spain. Internationals on target 1961 - Ian St. John bagged a brace on his tenth full international appearance as Scotland beat Wales 2-0 at Hampden Park in the British International Championships. 2017 – Bobby Duncan came off the bench to score for England Under-17’s as they beat Portugal 3-2 in a friendly in Chesterfield, with Curtis Jones also featuring with ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper in charge. On the same day, Bernard Diomède took charge of France Under-17’s as they thrashed Andorra 7-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Bosnia & Herzegovina. 2018 – Future red Harvey Elliott struck his first goal for England Under-17’s in their 3-1 defeat of the Republic of Ireland in a friendly in Dublin, with his clubmate Fábio Carvalho skippering and Steve Cooper managing the side. Other birthdays 1917 - Left-back Barney Ramsden was born in Sheffield. He arrived on a free transfer from Sheffield Victoria in March 1935 and helped us to claim the first post-war League title in 1947, making a total of 63 first-team appearances without notching. He joined Southend United on a free transfer from Bradford City on his 36th birthday. He remained at Roots Hall for a year, making just six appearances before being released. Other reds games 1969 – Wolverhampton Wanderers held us to a goalless draw at Anfield. 1919 – Harry Chambers and Billy Lacey netted as we won 2-1 at Bradford Park Avenue. 1913 – Burnley held us to a 1-1 draw in L4. Bertie Freeman scored one of his nine goals against the reds with Lacey levelling. Signing on 2016 - Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kevin Stewart and Ben Woodburn all signed new contracts. Stewart left the club for Hull City for a reported £6m in July 2017 after twenty senior reds games. Alexander-Arnold netted 23 times in 354 outings before being sold to Real Madrid for €10m in June 2025, with Woodburn notching once in eleven first-team appearances as he became our youngest ever scorer aged seventeen years and 45 days, moving on to Preston North End in July 2022. Abel return 2006 - Abel Xavier re-signed for Middlesbrough. He was sacked by them ten months earlier after being found guilty of breaching UEFA’s anti-doping regulations. He played twenty times in this second spell, before joining LA Galaxy in May 2007. Prince at last 2024 - Djibril’s son Prince Cissé won his fifth and last cap for Wales Under-17’s as they lost a European Championships qualifier 4-0 to Italy in San Marino. Also in international action 1996 – Gareth Roberts featured for Wales Under-21’s in their 1-0 European Championships qualifying defeat of the Netherlands in Breda. 2013 – Trent Alexander-Arnold and Herbie Kane played for England Under-16’s as they lost a friendly 1-0 to Northern Ireland in Bournemouth. 2019 – Rigobert Song took charge of Cameroon Under-23’s as they drew 1-1 with Ghana in an Africa Cup of Nations group game in Cairo. -
Happy birthday Digger 1963 - John Barnes was born at Up Park in Kingston, Jamaica. He signed from Watford for £900,000 in June 1987, a transfer that had been heavily trailed for at least six months. Kopites were not disappointed by his performances once he had arrived, as he helped us to two League titles, FA Cup, League Cup and two FA Charity Shields during an Anfield career in which he scored 108 goals in 407 appearances. He was also twice voted Football Writers’ Player Of The Year, as well as once by his fellow players, joining Newcastle United on a free transfer in August 1997. He became a father for the seventh time on his 47th birthday. 2003 – Left-back Milos Kerkez was born in Vrbas, Serbia. He signed from Bournemouth for £40m in June 2025. 2008 – Winger La'more Lee Forrester was born. He signed pro terms in August 2026, having been with the club since the age of six at pre-Academy level. Anfield goalscoring feats 1992 - Ian Rush scored his 200th League goal, including fourteen for Chester. Jimmy Phillips scored the first Premier League penalty against the reds as we beat Middlesbrough 4-1. Ronnie Rosenthal grabbed a brace, with Steve McManaman also on target, while future reds bench-warmer Stephen Pears was in the visitors’ goal. Steve Nicol played his 400th game for the club. 1896 - Inside-left Davy Hannah bagged a top-flight treble as we beat Sunderland 3-0. A strong signing 1964 - Geoff Strong arrived from Arsenal for a club record £40,000 fee. He made 201 reds appearances, netting 33 times and winning a League title medal and the FA Charity Shield the year after helping us to our first ever FA Cup triumph. He left the reds to join Coventry City for £29,500 in August 1970. Sadly, he died in June 2013 after suffering with Alzheimer’s disease. Beating the Blues 2010 – We beat Chelsea 2-0 in a Premiership fixture at Anfield, thanks to a first-half Fernando Torres brace as Lucas dominated the midfield. 1981 - Kenny Dalglish bagged a brace in the space of six minutes with Ian Rush also striking as we beat Gordon Lee’s Everton 3-1 at Anfield, with the game goalless at half time. The Blues had Eamonn O’Keefe dismissed for a high, late challenge on Ronnie Whelan, with Mick Ferguson netting for the visitors. Farewell to Melwood 2020 – The reds trained at Melwood for the last time, ahead of the move to Kirkby. It had been the club’s training ground since the 1950’s. Three-ton Hendo 2021 - Jordan Henderson played his 300th League game for the reds as we lost 3-2 at West Ham United. Alisson Becker flapped at a cross to score an early own goal, with Trent Alexander-Arnold levelling before the break. Pablo Fornals and Kurt Zouma both struck in the second half, before Divock Origi netted. More birthdays 1877 – Welsh international right-half Maurice Parry was born in Trefonen, Shropshire. He signed from Brighton United in August 1900, scoring four times in 221 reds games, moving on to Partick Thistle in May 1909, later spending time coaching back at Anfield. 1927 – Outside-right Don Woan was born in Liverpool. He signed from Bootle Athletic for £1,000 but only played two senior games before moving on to Leyton Orient in November 1951. 1990 – Spanish centre-half Daniel Ayala was born in Seville. He signed from Sevilla for £160,000 in September 2007, making his senior debut as substitute in our 2-1 League defeat at Tottenham Hotspur in August 2009, and his first start as we thumped Stoke City 4-0 at Anfield three days later. He played five reds games in total before being sold to Norwich City for £850,000 in August 2011 after loan spells at Hull City and Derby County. Gloves on and off 1919 - Pre-war reds custodian Ned Doig died from Spanish flu. He made 53 reds appearances after signing from Sunderland for £150 in August 1904, helping us to the Second Division title in his first season, and played on until 1908, finishing as our oldest ever player aged 41 years and 165 days. 1997 - Reserves keeper Tony Warner joined Swindon Town on loan, where he made three first-team appearances. 1977 - Steve Ogrizovic signed from Chesterfield for £70,000. He only made five first-team starts in five years at Anfield as understudy to Ray Clemence, sitting on the bench on a further 27 occasions. He had more luck at Coventry City, winning the FA Cup with them in 1987 and making more than 500 League appearances. Making their bow 1959 - Dave Hickson scored both goals on his reds debut, the day after his controversial move across Stanley Park, as we beat Second Division pace-setters Aston Villa 2-1, one of his former clubs, ending their run of fourteen games unbeaten. His arrival added an extra 15,000 to the usual gate, with one supporter running onto the pitch to kiss him on the cheek! Peter McParland struck for the Villains, doing so again in the away encounter later in the season. 1964 - Geoff Strong made his reds bow in our 1-1 top-flight draw at Fulham. Ian Callaghan netted our goal, with Johnny Haynes on target for the Cottagers. 1908 – Inside-left Bert Goode played the first of his seven reds games in our 1-0 First Division defeat at Bristol City, as Andy Burton struck one of his four goals against the reds, as well as missing a penalty. 1903 - Right-back Alf West debuted as we beat Notts County 2-1 in another top-flight fixture at Anfield thanks to half-back John ‘Geezer’ Hughes’ first reds strike and a Thomas Prescott own goal. Percy Humphreys netted one of his six goals past the reds. Beating Rovers 1904 - Jack Parkinson scored all our goals as we thumped Blackburn Rovers 5-1 in a Lancashire Senior Cup tie at Anfield. 1931 – We won a top-flight meeting 4-2, thanks to a Harold Barton brace and goals from Gordon Gunson and Gordon Hodgson. King Kenny dismissed 1984 - Kenny Dalglish and SL Benfica’s Minervino Pietra were both sent off after a scuffle as we lost 1-0 in the Estádio da Luz with Bruce Grobbelaar conceding an early penalty, although we progressed to the Third Round of the European Cup 3-2 on aggregate as Mark Lawrenson reached 200 reds appearances. Also in Europe 1967 - We trounced German high-fliers TSV 1860 München 8-0 in a Fairs Cup Second Round tie at Anfield with Roger Hunt and Ian Callaghan both netting twice. Hunt’s goals took him to 242 reds strikes, so beating Gordon Hodgson’s club record. The other goals came from a Tommy Smith penalty, Ian St. John, Tony Hateley and Peter Thompson. 1972 - Emlyn Hughes bagged a brace as we won 3-1 at AEK Athens although he handled to give away the penalty that the Greeks scored from. Phil Boersma added the final goal, one of four he scored in that season’s victorious UEFA Cup campaign. Derby disappointment 1998 - Jamie Redknapp grabbed our late consolation as we lost 2-1 at home to Derby County, Roy Evans’ last League game as joint Manager. Paulo Wanchope struck one of his four goals past us, with Kevin Harper also scoring for the visitors. 1970 - We also faced the Rams when we held them to a goalless draw at the Baseball Ground. First caps 1992 - Myllykosken Pallo-47’s Sami Hyypiä won his first full international cap as Finland drew 1-1 in a friendly in Tunisia. His clubmate Jari Litmanen also played, winning his 23rd cap. 2001 – Future red Glen Johnson made his debut for England Under-19’s as they beat Georgia 4-1 in a European Championships qualifier in York, with future reds coach Gary O’Neil also in action. Harry for the League 1896 - Forward Harry Bradshaw represented the Football League as they beat an Irish League side 2-0. The reds beat Sunderland 3-0 in a top-flight meeting on the same day, thanks to a David Hannah brace and goal from Malcolm McVean. Done it again 1942 - Cyril Done scored in his eighth consecutive game as the reds beat Chester 4-2 in a Wartime League fixture at Anfield. Willie Fagan, Jack Balmer and Billy Liddell also netted. Management moves 2002 - John Toshack was appointed Manager of Italian Serie B side Calcio Catania. He stayed in the job for less than three months before resigning. 2011 – Dietmar Hamann resigned as Stockport County boss, after a failed takeover of the club. On the same day, Dave Watson was appointed Under-18's Coach at Newcastle United. Beginning and end 1918 – Forward Wilf Bartrop died in First World War action in Warcoing, Belgium. He arrived from Barnsley for £900 in May 1914, playing three games before joining the Royal Field Artillery in 1915. 1923 - Joe Keetley signed from Accrington Stanley for £1,200, netting twice in nine reds games before moving to Wolverhampton Wanderers in May 1925. Other reds games 1953 – Louis Bimpson and Kevin Baron struck as Manchester City held us to a 2-2 draw at Anfield. 1936 – Berry Nieuwenhuys was on target early on as we lost 3-1 at Preston North End, despite leading at the break. Stevie at the treble 2010 - Steven Gerrard scored a second-half hat-trick as we came from behind to beat SSC Napoli 3-1 in our UEFA Europa League group game at Anfield, only the second reds substitute to net a treble, which included a penalty. Ezequiel Lavezzi put the visitors ahead, who included ex-red Andrea Dossena in their ranks. Five thousand goals 1990 - Ian Rush’s second goal in our 3-1 win at Tottenham Hotspur was our 5,000th goal in top-flight League football. Peter Beardsley also netted for the reds, having come on in place of John Barnes early in the first half. Bruce Grobbelaar reached a personal milestone in this game, playing for the reds for the 500th time as we won for the tenth time in our opening eleven League matches. Gary Lineker netted Spurs’ consolation, the last of his six strikes past us. We have visited Spurs twice more for First Division matches on this day in history. 1922 - Harry Chambers bagged a brace with Cyril Gilhespy netting his third and final reds goal and Dick Forshaw also on target as we won 4-2. 1967 - Roger Hunt struck as we held them to a draw, with Welsh winger Cliff Jones bagging one of his five strikes against the reds. Recent milestones 2006 - Jamie Carragher played his 300th League game as a Dirk Kuyt brace was enough to see off Reading at Anfield in our first ever League encounter. 2009 - Andriy Voronin played his fortieth and final reds game as we held Olympique Lyonnais to a 1-1 draw in their Stade Gerland, before being replaced by goalscorer Ryan Babel. Unfortunately, Lisandro López bagged a late equaliser. 2012 – Steven Gerrard played his 600th game for the club as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by Newcastle United. Yohan Cabaye put the visitors ahead just before the break, with Luis Suárez bagging a sublime equaliser midway through the second period. 2017 – Keeper Simon Mignolet skippered the side for the first time as we thumped West Ham United 4-1 at their London Stadium. Mohamed Salah and Joël Matip scored inside the first half an hour, with Manuel Lanzini pulling a goal back after the break. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain soon restored our two-goal lead, with Salah then adding his second. Razor sharpened 1987 - Ray Houghton notched his first reds goal as we drew 1-1 at Wimbledon’s Plough Lane, with Steve McMahon reaching a century of appearances for the club. Cally off the mark 1961 - Ian Callaghan struck the first of his 68 reds goals as we won 3-1 at Preston North End in a Second Division match, our most recent League visit. Preston-born Gordon Milne netted against his former club with Ian St. John also on the scoresheet as we secured our first win there in thirteen attempts. 1895 - We also visited Deepdale when Jimmy Ross netted as we lost a testimonial played for Preston’s Bob Holmes 2-1. 1907 – Preston won a Lancashire Senior Cup Semi-final 2-1 at Anfield, with left-half Jim Bradley nabbing our goal. 1911 - John Bovill bagged his first reds goals, striking twice in our 3-0 defeat of Notts County at Anfield. Arthur Goddard was also on the scoresheet. Happy birthday Gerd 1982 - Neil Mellor was born in Sheffield. He struck six times in 22 senior appearances for the reds, before moving to Preston North End in August 2006 for a reported £0.5m. Kettle’s debut 1975 - Left-back Brian Kettle made his reds debut in our 6-0 UEFA Cup Second Round thumping of Real Sociedad, as we went through 9-1 on aggregate en route to our second triumph in the competition. David Fairclough struck his first reds goal in just his second game with Phil Neal also scoring for the first time as centre-half Max Thompson appeared for the second and last time. Ray Kennedy nabbed a brace with John Toshack and Steve Heighway also on the scoresheet, while Kevin Keegan blasted a penalty over the bar. Thumping the Mancs 2001 - A Michael Owen brace and a John Arne Riise belter gave us a 3-1 win over Manchester United in an 11:30 kick off, to record our third victory over them that year, and third straight League win for the first time since December 1979. David Beckham netted for the visitors. 1944 - We also hosted them in Wartime League match with Don Welsh netting twice, including a penalty, in a 3-2 victory, as we also benefited from a Roughton own goal. Spanish stalemate 2008 - We had to rely on a stoppage-time Steven Gerrard penalty to secure a 1-1 draw with Club Atlético de Madrid in our home UEFA Champions League group game. Future red Maxi Rodríguez had given the visitors the lead, with Fernando Torres again missing out against his former club due to injury. The spot-kick we were awarded was generous, but we had already been denied two much better shouts. Ex-red Luis García featured against us. Meanwhile, new Argentina boss Diego Maradona declared that he wanted Javier Mascherano to take over as captain of his country. 2014 – We lost 1-0 at Real Madrid in another group game with Karim Benzema on target, one of his seven goals past us to date. This was our third consecutive defeat and third consecutive game without scoring in Europe, both joint club records. Players of the year 2006 - Sami Hyypiä was named Finland’s Player of the Year for the sixth time in eight years. 2003 - John Arne Riise was named the Norwegian PFA Player of the Year for the second year running. Four against 2000 - Mark Viduka scored four goals as Leeds United won a 4-3 thriller at Elland Road, the first of his six strikes against us. Christian Ziege scored his first reds goal, with Sami Hyypiä and Vladimír Šmicer also on target, while Patrik Berger suffered a serious knee injury. This was the first time an opposing player had notched four times against the reds since Jimmy Greaves for Tottenham Hotspur in April 1963. For King Billy 2004 - A plaque in honour of Billy Liddell was unveiled at Anfield. Off against the Russians again 1992 - Mike Marsh was sent off late on in Spartak Moskva’s 2-0 win at Anfield as we crashed out of the European Cup Winners’ Cup 6-2 on aggregate at the Second Round stage. This followed Bruce Grobbelaar’s dismissal in the first leg, and Paul Stewart’s in our preceding game to complete an unwelcome treble. A rare strike against 1978 - Forward John Hawley scored one of only four opposition goals in the League at Anfield that season, as Leeds United left with a point after using rough-house tactics to help secure a 1-1 draw. Terry McDermott was on target for the reds from the spot. Phil Neal had earlier struck a penalty against a post as we dropped points at home for the first time that season, in our seventh home fixture. Les Ferdinand bagged one of his six goals past us, with Steve Watson also scoring for the Geordies. 1893 - However, we thumped them 5-1 at Anfield when Patrick Gordon struck twice with Harry Bradshaw, Douglas Dick and Jimmy Stott all also on target in our Second Division meeting, the first time we had ever faced the Geordie outfit. These were the first reds strikes for both Bradshaw and Dick. Also in Europe 1970 - We moved into the Third Round of the Fairs Cup, holding Dinamo Bucureşti to a draw on their own patch to progress 4-1 on aggregate, with our equaliser coming from substitute Phil Boersma, the first of his thirty reds goals. 1981 - A thrilling night at Anfield ended in a 3-2 defeat of the previous season’s losing UEFA Cup Finalists AZ’67 Alkmaar, as we reached the Third Round of the European Cup 5-4 on aggregate. The Dutch champions equalised twice after a Terry McDermott penalty and an Ian Rush strike before Alan Hansen won it with five minutes to go. Alkmaar’s second equaliser came from a 25-yard shot from future Nottingham Forest star Johnny Metgod that bounced down from the crossbar and onto Phil Thompson’s foot for a bizarre own goal. Kees Kist scored in both legs for the Dutch side. 1997 - We beat Racing Club de Strasbourg 2-0 at Anfield thanks to a penalty from Robbie Fowler and a late goal from Karlheinz Riedle. This was our hundredth win in Europe, excluding those secured through penalty shoot-outs or coin tosses. However, this was not enough to overcome a three goal first-leg deficit as we went out of the UEFA Cup at the Second Round stage. A rare defeat 1989 - Coventry City won at Anfield for the first time, at the 23rd attempt, when Cyrille Regis struck the only goal of the game, the last of his four strikes past us. Elisha’s last 1933 - Elisha Scott won his 27th and last cap as a reds player as Northern Ireland were held to a 1-1 draw by Wales in the British International Championships in Belfast. He went on to win 31 in total, remaining the last red to achieve full international honours with the province until Ryan McLaughlin in May 2014. Facing the Trotters We have twice faced Bolton Wanderers in the Lancashire Senior Cup in the 1930’s, without tasting defeat. 1939 – We won a First Round tie 3-1 at Burnden Park, with Phil Taylor netting twice and Willie Fagan also on target. 1931 – We were held to a 1-1 Third Round draw at Anfield, with Jimmy Smith nabbing our goal. In and out 2002 - Young ex-reds midfielder Neil Prince was released by Torquay United, just three months after arriving at Plainmoor. He had made eight appearances for the Gulls and then moved into non-League football. 2010 – Icelandic midfielder Victor Pálsson joined Dagenham & Redbridge on loan, for whom he played three times. He left Anfield to sign for Hibernian in January 2011. 2011 – Ex-reserves forward Krisztián Németh re-signed for MTK Hungária, scoring in his only League outing before joining Dutch side RKC Waalwijk two months later. Other internationals 1964 - Future red David Wilson won his seventh and final cap for England Under-23’s as they beat Wales 3-2 in a friendly at the Racecourse Ground. 2023 – Future red Rio Ngumoha played for England Under-16’s in their 2-2 friendly draw with Switzerland in France, before winning a penalty shoot-out. Keepers on the move 2005 - Paul Harrison joined Wolverhampton Wanderers, having been released from Anfield at the end of the previous season. He never made their first team, soon moving on to Chester City. 2003 – Aussie custodian Brad Jones joined Blackpool on loan from Middlesbrough.
