Red trebles 1964 - Ian St. John scored three in a 6-1 First Division win over Sheffield United at Anfield. Roger Hunt bagged a brace, with Peter Thompson also on the scoresheet. 1913 - Arthur Metcalf bagged a treble in our first ever FA Cup meeting with the Gunners, then known as Woolwich Arsenal. We won 4-1 at the Manor Ground to reach the Third Round, with Billy Lacey also on target. Unfortunately, we went out to Newcastle United at the next hurdle. 1975 - We also faced Arsenal, losing a top-flight encounter 2-0 at Highbury as Alan Ball netted two of his eleven goals against the reds. John Toshack reached a century of League appearances for us that day. Hunting a new record 1969 - Roger Hunt bagged the only goal of the game against Sheffield Wednesday at Anfield, taking him past Gordon Hodgson to become our all-time record scorer in the League with 234, still a club record. Setting another record 2020 - The reds beat Southampton 4-0 to Anfield to ensure that we defeated all our opponents in a top-flight League season for the first time, although the score was goalless at half time. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain opened the scoring, before Jordan Henderson netted and Mohamed Salah added a brace. This ensured we had a 22-point lead at the top of the table, the greatest ever at the end of a day of top-flight football. On the same day, former reds Assistant Manager Željko Buvac was appointed Sporting Director of Dynamo Moskva. Mo again 2025 - Mohamed Salah reached twenty Premier League goals for the fifth season when he converted a first-half penalty at Bournemouth. He added a second after the break to secure a 2-0 victory. Robbie’s return 2006 - Robbie Fowler came off the bench to make his first appearance in his second spell with the reds, shortly after Steven Gerrard had opened the scoring in our home Premiership meeting with Birmingham City. Robbie even had a late winner correctly ruled out for offside, while Daniel Agger made his reds bow in a game that was Rafael Benítez’s hundredth in charge. Damien Johnson was sent off for the visitors, who equalised through a Xabi Alonso own goal in the dying minutes to deny us a club record eleventh consecutive clean sheet. Nando off the mark 2005 - We won 2-1 at Charlton Athletic thanks to Fernando Morientes’ first reds goal and a John Arne Riise strike, as we came from behind, with ex-red Danny Murphy taking the corner that led to Shaun Bartlett’s opener. Jamie Carragher played his 241st League game for the reds, a club Premiership record, while Vladimír Šmicer came on as a late substitute for Morientes to make his first appearance of the season. Spackman sold 1989 - Nigel Spackman was sold to Queens Park Rangers for £500,000 after losing his place to Ronnie Whelan. He had made 63 first-team appearances without scoring, winning a League title medal in his one full season at Anfield. Up against the Blues 1992 - We lost 2-1 at home to Chelsea, with Ronnie Rosenthal netting for the reds after Vinnie Jones had put the visitors in front. Rosenthal then hit the bar when clean through before Dennis Wise put the Blues ahead again with one of his four goals past us, with Bruce Grobbelaar saving a late spot-kick taken by Wise. Graeme Souness received his Manager of the Month award prior to the game as we suffered our first defeat in fourteen League fixtures. This was Chelsea’s first League win at Anfield since December 1935. 2009 – Frank Lampard was sent off as we beat Chelsea 2-0 at Anfield thanks to two late Fernando Torres goals to secure our 200th win in the Premier League, after Xabi Alonso had hit the crossbar. Alf off the mark 1933 – Outside-right Alf Hanson bagged the first of his 52 reds goals as Middlesbrough won 3-1 at Anfield. George Camsell netted two of his nine goals past us, with Harold Blackmore bagging the last of his five against the reds. Forward Ted Hancock played his tenth and last reds game. Alles Gute zum Geburtstag 1972 - Christian Ziege was born in Berlin. He signed in controversial circumstances from Middlesbrough in August 2000 for £5.5m and netted twice in 32 reds games, leaving Anfield for Tottenham Hotspur after just one year having won a Worthington Cup winner’s medal. He also won the Bundesliga twice, the UEFA Cup and Serie A during his club playing career, as well as Euro ’96 with Germany. 1952 – Full-back John Webb was born in Liverpool. He joined the reds in February 1969, making it onto the first-team bench six times in 1972/73 without making a senior appearance. He moved on to Tranmere Rovers in 1974, later playing in Belgium, the Netherlands and North America. 1937 - Keeper Tony Waiters was born in Southport. He won five senior England caps in 1964 while playing for Blackpool. He joined the reds in 1905 but only played six senior games before joining Chesterfield Town in June 1908. He later linked up with ex-red Maurice Parry and Alex Raisbeck at Partick Thistle. Ton up for Jim 1908 - Left-half Jim Bradley made his hundredth reds appearance as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by Brighton & Hove Albion in the FA Cup Second Round, with Jack Cox heading in our equaliser late on after right-half Maurice Parry had conceded a penalty converted by Jack Hall. The visitors appealed in vain that reds keeper Sam Hardy had carried the ball over the line before scrambling it round the post. This was the first game in which Anfield’s new grandstand, where the Main Stand is today, was used. More red beginnings 1902 – Inside-forward Tommy Green made the first of his seven senior reds appearances in our goalless top-flight draw at Bury, while inside-left Bill White played for the sixth and last time. 2018 – Midfielder Curtis Jones signed for the reds as a professional. He has struck nineteen times in 179 reds games across his first seven campaigns, so far helping us to claim two Premier League titles and FA Community Shield. Reds farewells 2014 – Forward Tony Hateley died in Preston after a long illness. He became our record signing when he joined from Chelsea in July 1967 for £96,000 and got off to a flyer at Anfield, grabbing 27 goals in 52 appearances in his first season. Unfortunately, injuries took their toll, and he was sold to Coventry City only fourteen months after arriving at the club, after 28 goals in 56 outings in total. 1997 - Stan Collymore scored the only goal of the game at Derby County, our last ever visit to the Baseball Ground. The home side’s Daryl Powell was sent off at the beginning of the second period. 1958 – We lost 1-0 to Leyton Orient in a Second Division fixture at Brisbane Road, with forward Tony Rowley playing his 63rd and last reds game. 1947 – Albert Stubbins struck twice as we won 2-1 at Leeds United as outside-right Berry Nieuwenhuys played his 257th and last game for the club. 1900 – Forward Peter Kyle played his fifth and last game as we beat Stoke 1-0 in an FA Cup First Round replay at Anfield, thanks to an early John ‘Sailor’ Hunter goal. On the losing side We have suffered seven defeats in our fourteen League games on this day over the years. 1936 – We lost 6-1 at West Bromwich Albion, their record win over the reds. Jack Balmer grabbed our consolation, while Billy ‘Ginger’ Richardson netted a hat-trick for the Baggies, three of his nine goals against the reds. Stan Wood bagged two of his five against us, with Jack Mahon scoring the last of his four past us. Forward Jimmy Collins made his reds bow in this game. 1986 - Our 2-1 defeat at Ipswich Town, with both Kenny Dalglish and Ian Rush absent, helped lift Everton to the top of the table that day, although we still managed to claim the title at the end of the season. Beating the Hornets We have twice seen off Watford at Anfield on this day in history. 1967 - Ian St. John, Roger Hunt and Chris Lawler struck past ex-red Bert Slater as we won an FA Cup Third Round replay 3-1 as we went on to be knocked out by Everton two rounds later that year. 1984 - We secured a 3-0 League victory thanks to goals from Ian Rush, Steve Nicol and Ronnie Whelan. Thumping the blues 1955 - Perhaps our most memorable game on this day came when we triumphed 4-0 at Goodison Park in the FA Cup Fourth Round, at a time when we were a division below the Blues, having been relegated the previous season. The goals came from Billy Liddell, Alan A’Court and a John Evans brace. Unfortunately, Huddersfield Town knocked us out at Anfield in the following round. 1944 - We also won there in a Wartime League fixture, with Berry Nieuwenhuys and Jack Balmer on target as we beat Everton 3-2, with Don Welsh netting from the spot. 1947 - We lost a top-flight encounter 1-0 there. On the road to Cardiff once more 2006 - We won our FA Cup Fourth Round tie at Portsmouth 2-1 in a Sunday night fixture screened live on the BBC. Steven Gerrard opened the scoring from the spot following a Dejan Stefanović handball before a John Arne Riise rocket handed us a two-goal half-time lead. Sean Davis headed Pompey back into the game, but we held on for the win. Jan Kromkamp made his first start in this match, with Harry Kewell playing his hundredth reds game. Most recently 2025 – We lost our final UEFA Champions League group stage game 3-2 at PSV Eindhoven, although we still finished top of the 36-team pile. Cody Gakpo scored past his former side from the spot, but Johan Bakayoko levelled. Harvey Elliott struck before Ismael Saibari and Ricardo Pepi both netted before half time. Jayden Danns became the club’s youngest ever player to start a game in the Champions League, with all three subs having memorable nights. Tyler Morton played his fourteenth and last reds game, Trey Nyoni became the reds’ youngest ever player in Europe, aged seventeen years and 213 days, while centre-half Amara Nallo was dismissed on his debut, becoming our youngest ever recipient of a red card, aged eighteen years and 293 days. 2023 – Left-back Andy Robertson skippered the side from the off for the first time as we lost an FA Cup Fourth Round tie 2-1 at Brighton & Hove Albion. Harvey Elliott put us in front but Lewis Dunk deflected in a Tariq Lamptey strike to level before the break. Kaoru Mitoma bagged a stoppage-time winner to send us out. 2020 – We won 2-0 at West Ham United’s London Stadium with Mohamed Salah converting a first-half penalty, with an Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain strike sending the reds nineteen points clear at the top of the table. Heading to the Midlands 2004 - On-loan keeper Paul Jones left Anfield to sign for his former club Wolverhampton Wanderers, in a £250,000 deal from Southampton. He had played just twice for the reds. 2018 – Daniel Sturridge joined West Bromwich Albion on loan, but injury restricted him to six appearances without scoring. On the same day, ex-reds centre-half Danny Wilson joined Colorado Rapids from Rangers. Hosting the Gunners 2003 - Arsenal scored a breakaway goal through Robert Pires after nearly ten minutes of constant reds pressure at the start of our League meeting at Anfield, the first of his four strikes past us. The Gunners dominated the rest of the first half, before John Arne Riise equalised in the second period. Dennis Bergkamp put the North London side ahead again, with the aid of a deflection, but Emile Heskey’s late header earned us a share of the points. 1992 - We beat the Gunners 2-0 at Anfield, when they were reigning champions, thanks to a Jan Mølby penalty and a goal from Ray Houghton. Simply the reds against Hucknall 1898 - Our first ever first-class match on this day came against the quaintly named Hucknall St. John’s, in an FA Cup First Round match at Anfield. The game ended in a 2-0 victory, with Frank Becton on target and centre-half Joe McQue grabbing his fourteenth and final reds goal. This was unsurprisingly the only time we have ever faced the Nottinghamshire side. We went out to Derby County in the Third Round that season. Beating the Cumbrians twice We have twice seen off Carlisle United in FA Cup encounters on this day over the years, on our way to Wembley in both seasons. 1974 - We won a Fourth Round replay 2-0 at Brunton Park, thanks to goals from Phil Boersma and John Toshack. The game kicked off at 2pm on a Tuesday due to the three-day working week. 1977 - Kevin Keegan, John Toshack and Steve Heighway were all on target as we beat United 3-0 in a Fourth Round match at Anfield, with Heighway’s strike being our 400th in the competition. Scoring at last 1972 - We beat Crystal Palace 4-1 at Anfield after failing to score in each of our previous five League fixtures. Chris Lawler netted a brace, with Ian Callaghan and Kevin Keegan also on target on a day that began a run of 21 consecutive League wins at Anfield, which remains a top-flight record. Ex-red Peter Wall struck for the Eagles. On our way to Wembley 1989 - We faced Millwall in the FA Cup Fourth Round. Front pair John Aldridge and Ian Rush both struck in front of the TV cameras as we won our first ever game at The Den 2-0. Alex Watson impressed at the back in a rare start, while future red Jimmy Carter appeared for Millwall. Gary Mac in charge 2008 - Gary McAllister was appointed Manager of Leeds United. He led them to the Play-off Final that season, but they lost out to Doncaster Rovers. He was sacked in December of that year after a poor string of results, including an FA Cup Second Round defeat to non-League Histon. Quasi debuts 1986 - Peter Beardsley, then with Newcastle United, won his first cap in England’s 4-0 friendly defeat of Egypt in Cairo. Fellow future red Mark Wright also played. Barclay resigns 1892 – William Barclay tendered his resignation as Vice Chairman of Everton after John Houlding had asked the Blues to quit Anfield. It was accepted four days later, and he later worked as a Secretary-c**-Manager for the first four years of the reds’ existence. Half ton Mo 2017 – Future red Mohamed Salah won his fiftieth cap for Egypt as they beat Morocco 1-0 in their Africa Cup of Nations Quarter-final in Gabon. 2013 – Future reds loanee Victor Moses converted two spot-kicks as Nigeria beat Ethiopia 2-0 in a group stage game in South Africa. He helped us to win the League title in 1988 and the FA Cup the following season, bagging 63 goals in 104 games before moving to Spain to join Real Sociedad for £1.1m in September 1989, becoming their first non-Basque player. 2006 - Robbie Fowler re-signed on a free transfer from Manchester City after three years with the Blues. Matt Smith opened the scoring for the League One outfit before Suárez equalised and then had a goal ruled out for offside. In comes Redders 1991 - Jamie Redknapp signed from Bournemouth for £350,000, going on to strike 41 times in 308 first-team appearances. He moved on to Tottenham Hotspur in a free transfer in April 2002, retiring from football in the summer of 2005 after a brief spell at Southampton. Beating Spurs 2006 - Harry Kewell volleyed the only goal of the game as Tottenham Hotspur left Anfield with their customary defeat. Paul Stalteri was sent off for the visitors, while Stephen Warnock was completing his half century of reds games. The crowd of 44,983 was the largest to date since Anfield became an all-seater stadium. Another debutant 1967 - Ian Ross debuted as a substitute for the injured Ian Callaghan in our 1-0 win at Sheffield Wednesday, after Peter Thompson had scored the only goal of the game. 1989 - We also visited Hillsborough, coming from 2-0 down to draw, with Steve Nicol and John Aldridge getting on the scoresheet within a minute of each other. However, they did not allow enough time to make the journey and so the game had to be called off, despite many of their fans managing to arrive. Things got even worse for Mark Lawrenson, who crashed his car driving home from Anfield after skidding on black ice. The game was eventually staged two weeks later, ending goalless after a full two hours, but we lost the second replay 3-0 at Kenilworth Road. Ton up in the cup 1911 – Sam Bowyer’s second goal was our hundredth in the FA Cup as we beat Gainsborough Trinity 3-2 in a First Round tie at Anfield as right-back Alf West played his 141st and last reds game. Solly March bagged a brace before Danny Welbeck completed the scoring. 2018 – We beat Manchester City in a seven-goal thriller at Anfield, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain handing us an early lead. Leroy Sané equalised before the break with one of his four goals past us to date, but Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mané and Mohamed Salah all struck during the second half as we led 4-1 with less than ten minutes remaining. Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gündogan then netted to ensure a nervy finish as we inflicted City’s first League defeat of the season on them. This was the first of the latter’s four strikes against us. 2012 – We were held to a goalless draw at Anfield by Stoke City. Dick dies 1933 – Centre-forward Dick Johnson died. Reds farewells in a rout 2007 - We were beaten 6-3 at Anfield by Arsenal in our rearranged Carling Cup Fifth Round meeting, the first time we had conceded half a dozen at home since April 1930. This was our ninth meeting with the Gunners in this competition, making them our most frequent League Cup opponents. Júlio Baptista scored four goals and had a penalty saved by Jerzy Dudek. Luis García came on as a substitute and was later himself replaced, in what was to be his 121st and final reds game. The kick-off was delayed by twenty minutes due to heavy traffic, and Roger Hunt opened the scoring shortly before the break. Ian St. John added a second after Jeff Astle had a goal chalked off for the home side. Ron Yeats gave away a penalty with thirteen minutes to go, picking the ball up in the area as he believed the referee had blown for a foul.
