Four apiece 1986 - Steve McMahon missed a penalty but struck four goals as we recorded the equal biggest ever win in the League Cup, thumping Fulham 10-0. Ian Rush and John Wark both netted braces with the other goals coming from Ronnie Whelan and Steve Nicol, while Rush also struck the post twice. Both managers played in this game, with Kenny Dalglish lining up against the Cottagers’ new player/manager Ray Lewington. 1995 - Robbie Fowler bagged four in our 5-2 defeat of Bolton Wanderers, his hundredth reds game, with Steve Harkness nabbing our other goal late on. 1939 - We also entertained the Trotters, with Jack Balmer bagging a brace and Matt Busby also on target in a 3-0 friendly victory. Jonjo off 2012 - We lost 2-1 to Manchester United at Anfield, with Jonjo Shelvey somewhat harshly dismissed in the first half, and Fabio Borini having to go off injured at half-time. Steven Gerrard put us ahead straight after the break, but Rafael da Silva equalised before Robin van Persie converted a late, soft penalty to secure victory, one of his seven goals past us. Martin Kelly suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in this game. The first Irish red 1970 - Steve Heighway became the first ever red to represent the Republic of Ireland in their 2-0 friendly defeat at home to Poland, winning the first of his 33 caps less than a month after his senior reds debut. 1992 - Torben Piechnik won his first cap as a reds player, and tenth to date, as Denmark were held to a goalless draw by Lithuania in a World Cup qualifier in Vilnius. Future red Stig Inge Bjørnebye won his twentieth cap on the same day as Norway beat the Netherlands in another qualifier in Oslo. Alex off the mark 2025 – Alexander Isak bagged his first reds goal shortly before the break in our League Cup Third Round tie with Southampton at Anfield. Shea Charles levelled, but Hugo Ekitiké grabbed the winner before being dismissed for a second bookable offence, having taken his shirt off to celebrate. Centre-half Giovanni Leoni and keeper Giorgi Mamardashvili both debuted, but Leoni was stretchered off late on with an injury that kept him out for more than a year. Reds sold 1993 - Reserves keeper Mike Hooper left Anfield after 73 reds games to join Newcastle United for £550,000. He made thirty appearances for the Toon before retiring from the game. 1982 – Forward Colin Russell moved on to Huddersfield Town. He only ever tasted half an hour of first team action for the reds, coming on for Howard Gayle in a home League defeat to Sunderland in May 1981. 1920 - Scottish international centre-forward Tom Miller was sold to Manchester United for £2,000, after 56 goals in 146 reds games, including appearing in our first FA Cup Final in 1914. He had been suspended for his part in the 1915 match-fixing scandal involving the reds and the Old Trafford side. Debutants galore 2008 – Keeper Diego Cavalieri and right-back Philipp Degen both made their reds debuts as we beat Crewe Alexandra 2-1 in a League Cup Third Round tie at Anfield, the hundredth game we had played in the competition on home turf, although one came as the ‘away’ side. Unfortunately, Degen suffered two broken ribs during the match. Daniel Agger opened the scoring before Michael O’Connor equalised. Lucas Leiva struck the winner. 1899 - Forward John Parkinson made his only reds appearance in our 2-1 home derby defeat, with Tom Robertson netting our consolation. Jack Taylor bagged one of his five goals past us, with Jimmy Settle netting one of his eleven. 1905 - Left-half Jim Bradley made his reds bow in our 2-0 win over Birmingham City at Anfield, when Robbie Robinson and Joe Hewitt were on target. 1933 - South African outside-right Berry Nieuwenhuys made his debut in our 3-0 win at Tottenham Hotspur. Sam English nabbed a brace with Alf Hanson also on the scoresheet. 1950 - Centre-half Joe Cadden made his reds bow in our 2-1 defeat at Fulham, with Billy Liddell netting. 1957 - Winger Johnny Morrissey debuted in our 2-1 win at Stoke City, with Louis Bimpson and Tony Rowley grabbing the goals, and Geoff Twentyman putting through his own net. Mo again 2017 – Mohamed Salah scored in his third consecutive game as we won 3-2 in the League at Leicester City, just four days after being knocked out of the League Cup at the same venue. Philippe Coutinho also scored before Shinji Okazaki pulled a goal back on the stroke of half time. Jordan Henderson restored our two-goal advantage, but Jamie Vardy responded immediately with the sixth of his ten goals past us to date. Simon Mignolet then saved a Vardy spot-kick to ensure victory. Penalties galore 2014 – After a 2-2 draw, our League Cup Third Round tie with Middlesbrough at Anfield resulted in a 14-13 win on penalties, a club, competition and joint English professional record, with even keeper Simon Mignolet amongst the scorers. Midfielder Jordan Rossiter opened the scoring on his debut, with Jordan Williams making his only senior appearance. Adam Reach levelled to send the game into extra time before Suso struck his only goal in his last game for the club. However, Patrick Bamford converted a stoppage time spot kick to send the match to a shoot-out. 2015 – We beat League Two side Carlisle United 3-2 on penalties after another Third Round tie ended 1-1 after extra time. Keeper Ádám Bogdán saved three of the spot kicks on his reds bow while centre-half Martin Škrtel played his 300th reds game. Danny Ings had given us the lead before Derek Asamoah equalised before half time. Happy birthday Fred 1895 - Outside-left Fred Hopkin was born in Dewsbury, Yorkshire. He netted twelve times in 360 reds games after signing from Manchester United for £2,800 in May 1921, helping us to back-to-back League titles in the early 1920’s before re-joining former club Darlington in August 1931. On the same day, a benefit match was held for Matt McQueen at Anfield. He played 105 times for the reds between 1892 and 1899, and later became a director, before managing the side for five years in the 1920’s. An England International XI beat the reds 3-0, with Sheffield United’s Harry Hammond bagging a treble. 1931 – Welsh international centre-forward Des Palmer was born in Swansea. He signed from his hometown club in March 1959, in a £15,000 deal with right-half Roy Saunders moving in the opposite direction. Unfortunately, he suffered a serious knee injury on his reserves bow, moving on to Johannesburg Ramblers in 1960. 2005 – Right-back Josh Davidson was born in Liverpool. He signed pro terms in October 2022. First goal against 1893 - Centre-forward David Henderson scored on his reds debut as we beat Small Heath 3-1, as we conceded our first ever League goal in our fourth match, netted by Caesar Jenkyns, with Jimmy Stott grabbing a brace. Willie signs on 1931 – Scottish right-back Willie Steel signed from St. Johnstone for £1,000. He failed to score in 128 reds games before being sold to Birmingham City for £5,000 in March 1935. Derby wins We have twice beaten Everton in other games on this day in history. 1989 - Ian Rush netted a brace to reach 150 League goals for the reds after John Barnes had equalised as we won 3-1 at Goodison, with ex-reds reserve Mike Newell having put the Toffees in front with one of his eight strikes against the reds. 1967 - Roger Hunt grabbed the only goal of the game at Anfield. This was our 2,500th League game. Double century 2006 - Mark González struck our 200th League goal against Tottenham Hotspur after the ball came back off the post from a failed Craig Bellamy tap-in, before Dirk Kuyt and John Arne Riise netted to complete a 3-0 victory. Not bribed 1922 – Before our 3-0 home League defeat of Burnley, keeper Elisha Scott, centre-half Walter Wadsworth and centre-forward Dick Johnson had all been offered £10 to let the visitors win. However, they reported this attempt to the Club Secretary, which was later dismissed as a hoax by the police. Dick Forshaw bagged a brace, with Harry Chambers also on target as forward Billy Lacey made his 200th League appearance for the reds. All sung out 2000 - Rigobert Song played his 38th and final reds game as we were held 1-1 by Sunderland at Anfield. Robbie Fowler played his 200th League game, with Michael Owen bagging our equaliser after Kevin Phillips had netted for the visitors. Five three times We have won 5-0 at Anfield on three separate occasions on this day in history. 1980 - Sammy Lee struck twice with Kenny Dalglish and David Fairclough also on the scoresheet as we met Third Division Swindon Town in a League Cup Third Round tie, as we also benefited from a Glen Cockerill own goal. 1972 - Phil Boersma, Alec Lindsay, Steve Heighway and Peter Cormack netted against Sheffield United to take us to the top of the First Division, with Kevin Keegan converting a penalty immediately after Tommy Smith had one saved for the second consecutive game. 1961 - Jimmy Melia grabbed a brace while Ian St. John, Roger Hunt and Kevin Lewis also struck as we beat Bury in a Second Division meeting, our record ever victory over the Shakers. 1907 – Bobby Robinson bagged the only goal of our Lancashire Senior Cup Second Round meeting with Bury at Anfield as we progressed to the next round. Award winners 2019 - Alisson Becker and Virgil van Dijk were both named in the FIFA FIFPRO Men’s World 11 at The Best FIFA Football Awards in Milan, with Alisson named as The Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper and Jürgen Klopp as The Best FIFA Men’s Coach, following UEFA Champions League glory in Madrid. Management moves 1998 - Steve McMahon left as Swindon Town boss by mutual consent after 201 games in charge, during which they were relegated but immediately bounced back as Second Division champions. 2010 - Paul Dalglish left as Head Coach of Tampa Bay by mutual consent, after they had lost 3-0 to Montreal which knocked them out of a play-off spot. 2011 – Dean Saunders was appointed Manager of Doncaster Rovers. However, they were relegated from the Championship in his first season in charge. He remained in charge until January 2013 when he left to take over at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Internationals on target 2001 - Anthony Le Tallec and Florent Sinama-Pongolle both netted for the French Under-17’s in their 2-1 defeat of reigning champions Brazil in the World Championships Quarter-final, in The Dwight Yorke Stadium in Tobago. 2013 – Harry Wilson scored for Wales Under-17’s in their 5-5 European Championships qualifying draw with Hungary in Slovenia. 2021 – Future red Trent Koné-Doherty played for the Republic of Ireland Under-16’s in their goalless friendly in Malta. 2022 – Mohamed Salah bagged a brace, including one from the spot, as Egypt beat Niger 3-0 in a friendly in Alexandria. Darwin Núñez won his first cap as a reds player as Uruguay lost 1-0 to Iran in Austria, with Luis Suárez appearing for the first time since re-joining Club Nacional de Football. Meanwhile, future red Milos Kerkez debuted for Hungary as they beat Germany 1-0 in a UEFA Nations League group game in Leipzig. Raheem Sterling represented England for the first time since moving to Chelsea in their 1-0 UEFA Nations League defeat in Italy and Ryan Gravenberch won his first cap since moving to Bayern München as the Netherlands Under-21’s won a friendly 2-1 in Belgium. Also in international action were Alisson Becker, Bobby Clark, Fabinho, Trent Koné-Doherty, Sepp van den Berg, future reds Ronald Araújo, Wataru Endō, Jeremie Frimpong, Alexis Mac Allister, Giorgi Mamardashvili and Dominik Szoboszlai and ex-reds Péter Gulácsi and Liam Millar, with Rigobert Song taking charge of Cameroon and Bernard Diomède managing France Under-18’s, for whom future red Jérémy Jacquet debuted. Disappointment against the Baggies We have twice faced West Bromwich Albion in the First Division on this day in history, and have yet to win. 1911 - Jack Parkinson was on target as we lost 3-1 at Anfield. 1978 - Kenny Dalglish netted an opportunist equaliser in our 1-1 draw at The Hawthorns. He hid behind keeper Tony Godden and poked the ball home when he rolled it out. These were our first dropped points of the season, in our seventh League match. Winger Laurie Cunningham had opened the scoring for the home side, while Ray Clemence was playing his 500th reds game. Olympian reds 2000 - Brad Friedel played as the USA drew 2-2 with Japan in the Olympics Quarter-final in Adelaide and then won the resulting penalty shoot-out 5-4 after extra time. On the same day, future red Fábio Aurélio played for Brazil in their 2-1 defeat by Cameroon after extra time in Brisbane. Mighty Mouse ties the knot 1964 - Kevin Keegan married Jean at St. Peter-in-Chains Catholic Church in Doncaster. Finn off the mark 1995 - Future reds right-back Steve Finnan scored on his debut for Birmingham City as they drew 1-1 at Watford. Fame at last 2010 - Ian Callaghan, Ray Clemence and Kenny Dalglish were all inducted into the National Football Museum’s Hall of Fame at Hilton Hotel, Manchester, with Kenny doing so as a Manager, having previously been enrolled as a player. Other reds game 1987 – We drew the first leg of our League Cup Second Round tie 1-1 at Blackburn Rovers. Steve Nicol struck our goal, but we fell to Everton at the next hurdle. On the move 2022 – Keeper David Martin re-signed for Milton Keynes Dons as a Player/Coach, his third spell with the club. He failed to make a senior appearance this time around, being released at the end of the campaign, 2011 – Reserves forward David Amoo joined Bury on loan. He bagged four goals in 28 outings for the Shakers. 1998 – Future reds goalkeeping coach John Achterberg joined Tranmere Rovers on a free transfer from PSV Eindhoven. He played 312 times on the Wirral, before moving to Melwood in June 2009. 1987 - Reserves centre-back Mark Seagraves signed for Manchester City for £100,000. He made just fifty appearances in three years at Maine Road before joining Bolton Wanderers. 1983 - Future red Peter Beardsley signed for Newcastle United from Vancouver Whitecaps for £150,000. He netted 61 in 163 games for the Toon, before moving to Anfield in July 1987. Other internationals in action 1987 – Glenn Hysén played for Sweden as they lost a European Championships qualifier 1-0 to Portugal in Solna. 1997 – Future red Vladimír Šmicer appeared as the Czech Republic won a World Cup qualifier 1-0 in Malta. 1998 – Future red Fernando Morientes featured as Spain beat Russia 1-0 in a friendly in Granada. 2003 – Future red Daniel Agger played for Denmark Under-20’s in their 1-0 defeat in the Ukraine. 2006 - Michael Collins, Laurence Gaughan and Shane O’Connor all appeared for the Republic of Ireland Under-17’s as they held Denmark to a goalless draw in a European Championships qualifier in Azerbaijan. 2016 – Future red Ozan Kabak played as Turkey Under-17’s beat Norway 2-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Lithuania. -

In comes Ronnie 1979 - Ronnie Whelan arrived from Irish side Home Farm on a free transfer. He went on to make 493 reds appearances, scoring 73 times and winning six League titles, one European Cup, two FA Cups, three League Cups and three FA Charity Shields before joining Southend United on a free transfer in September 1994. Births and death 1999 – Swedish forward Alexander Isak was born in Solna. He signed for a British record £120m from Newcastle United in September 2025. He struck eight times in 29 reds appearances before his 27th birthday. 1891 - Reds boss George Kay was born in Manchester. He arrived at Anfield in August 1936 and led us to our first League title in 24 years in 1947, and the FA Cup Final three years later. He was forced to retire due to illness in February 1951 and sadly died just three years later. Amongst the players who joined the club during his tenure were the great Billy Liddell and Bob Paisley. He had led us to a total of 140 victories in 354 matches in charge. 1883 – Forward Jack Parkinson was born in Bootle. He joined the reds in 1910, turning pro in October 1911. He struck 128 times in 219 games, moving on to Bury in August 1914. 1987 – Left-winger Peter Kippax died. He left his hometown club Burnley to join the reds as an amateur in 1948, having helped Great Britain to fourth place in the Olympics football competition that summer. He made one League outing, against Birmingham City in March 1949, having already netted in a Wartime League fixture for the reds against Bolton Wanderers in August 1945, before moving on to Preston North End in 1950. For King Billy 1960 - A testimonial match for Billy Liddell was staged. The reds beat an International XI 4-2 at Anfield. Liddell appeared for both sides, scoring for the Internationals. Dave Hickson netted a brace for the reds, with Jim Harrop and Alan A’Court also on target. Other stars in action for the international side included Jimmy Armfield, Tom Finney, Nat Lofthouse, Stanley Matthews, Don Revie and Bert Trautmann. Goalscoring debuts 1929 - Forward Jimmy Smith netted a brace on his reds bow, to hand us a 2-1 win at Manchester United. Joe Spence struck the last of his five goals against the reds. 1968 - New record signing Alun Evans scored on his debut in our 4-0 win at home to Leicester City, with all four goals coming in the opening twelve minutes, courtesy also of Ron Yeats, a Tommy Smith penalty and Ian Callaghan. 1999 - Young midfielder Layton Maxwell scored on his only senior reds appearance as we beat Hull City 4-2 in the second leg of our Worthington Cup Second Round tie, with Karl-Heinz Riedle netting a brace in his 76th and last appearance, and Danny Murphy also on the scoresheet. Stéphane Henchoz, Frode Kippe and Jon Newby all also made their senior bows, with keeper Lee Bracey sent off in the first half with the score 1-0 to the reds. Hull fought back from two goals to draw level through a John Eyre penalty and Colin Alcide before the reds restored order to proceedings. Jürgen’s European record 2023 - Jürgen Klopp secured his fiftieth European win in charge, a new club record, as we beat LASK 3-1 at the Raiffeisen Arena despite falling behind to a Florian Flecker strike. Darwin Núñez equalised from the spot after the break, with Luis Díaz putting us ahead. Mohamed Salah added a late third. More recent reds firsts 2021 – Joe Gomez skippered the reds for the first time as we won a League Cup Third Round tie 3-0 on our way to claiming the trophy for the ninth time. Right-back Conor Bradley and midfielders Kaide Gordon and Tyler Morton all debuted, with keeper Caoimhín Kelleher saving a spot-kick to maintain our lead before the break. Takumi Minamino struck either side of a Divock Origi header. Bells toll again 2011 – Craig Bellamy struck the first goal in his second spell at Anfield as we won 2-1 at Brighton & Hove Albion in the Third Round of the League Cup, also smashing the crossbar with a 35-yard free-kick. A new record attendance of 21,897 at the American Express Community Stadium was set. Dirk Kuyt added a second goal late on, before Ashley Barnes converted a last-minute spot-kick for the home side. Ex-reds reserve Alan Navarro featured for the Seagulls. Other debutants 1935 - Forward Jack Balmer made his first reds appearance as we lost 1-0 at Leeds United. 1901 - Left-half George Fleming made his reds bow as we drew 1-1 at Sunderland, with Jack Cox on target. George Bowen made his second and final reds appearance in this game. First and last strikes 1895 - Centre-forward George Allan bagged the first of his 56 reds goals as we won 4-2 at Loughborough Town in a Second Division fixture. Davy Hannah bagged a brace with Jimmy Ross also on target. 1974 - Phil Boersma netted his thirtieth and final goal for the reds in our 3-0 top-flight defeat of Stoke City at Anfield. Steve Heighway rounded off the scoring, with the ball having been set rolling by a John Ritchie own goal. 1994 – John Scales netted his first reds goal as we beat Burnley 2-0 in the first leg of our League Cup Second Round tie at Anfield. Robbie Fowler also scored. Macca off the mark 1985 - Kenny Dalglish scored at Goodison inside twenty seconds, to become the only ever Player/Manager to net in this fixture. Future reds on target 1991 - Gary McAllister scored the only goal of the game as we lost 1-0 at Leeds United. 2013 – Centre-back Dejan Lovren headed in as Southampton won 1-0 at Anfield, with fellow future reds Nathaniel Clyne, Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert also featuring. Kenny at Hampden Kenny Dalglish twice turned out for the Scots at Hampden Park on this day. 1977 - He scored in their 3-1 World Cup qualifying defeat of Czechoslovakia. 1983 - He played alongside captain Graeme Souness, and ex-red Frank McGarvey and John Wark, as Scotland beat Uruguay 2-0 in a friendly. Robbo for Ireland 1983 - Michael Robinson won his first cap as a reds player, netting his final goal for the Republic of Ireland in their 3-0 European Championships qualifying win in Iceland. Clubmate Mark Lawrenson also played. Future red Glenn Hysén played for Sweden as the beat Czechoslovakia 1-0 in another qualifier in Solna the same day. Reserve keepers loaned out 1990 - Mike Hooper joined Leicester City on loan. He played fifteen times for them, before returning to our second string. Heading in the opposite direction was Carl Muggleton, who did not make a senior appearance while at Anfield. 1985 - Bob Bolder moved to Sunderland on a temporary basis, going on to join them permanently for £100,000 the following month. English reds beaten at home 1983 - Phil Neal won his fiftieth and final cap in England’s 1-0 European Championships qualifying defeat by Denmark at Wembley, which meant they missed out on the Finals in France. Sammy Lee and future red John Barnes also played, while Ajax’s Jan Mølby came off the bench for the Danes. On the same day, Ian Rush and ex-red Joey Jones both played as Wales held Norway to a goalless draw in their qualifier in Oslo. Young England red debuts 1982 - Future reds John Barnes, Barry Venison and Paul Walsh all made their debuts for England Under-21’s as they won 4-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Denmark, with fellow future red Steve McMahon also playing. On the same day, another England Under-21’s side was winning the first leg of their European Championships Final 3-1 at Bramall Lane. England eventually won 5-4 on aggregate. 2022 – Bobby Clark won his first cap for England Under-18’s in their 1-0 friendly defeat of the Netherlands in Spain. James Balagizi and Harvey Davies both debuted for England Under-20’s as they beat Chile 3-0 in the Costa Cálida Supercup in the same stadium, with Melkamu Frauendorf appearing for Germany Under-19’s for the first time as they thumped Armenia 5-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Gifhorn. Oakley Cannonier debuted for England Under-19’s in their 2-0 qualifying win over Montenegro in Denmark, with Luke Chambers also featuring. Trent Koné-Doherty won his first Under-17’s cap for the Republic of Ireland as a reds player in their 1-1 friendly draw with the Netherlands, with the Irish triumphing in a penalty shoot-out. Ex-reds coach Steve Clarke took charge of Scotland as they beat Ukraine 3-0 in a UEFA Nations League group game at Hampden Park. 2021 – Trent Koné-Doherty netted for the Irish Under-16’s while debuting in their 3-0 friendly win in Malta. Fellow future red Ármin Pécsi played for Hungary Under-17’s on the same day as they lost a friendly 2-0 to France. Also on the move 1991 - Ex-red John Wark signed for Ipswich Town for the third time, this time on a free transfer from Middlesbrough. He spent another six seasons at Portman Road, helping them back into the top flight in 1992 and taking his total appearances for the Blues to 678. 2012 - Stephen Warnock joined Bolton Wanderers on loan from Aston Villa, playing fifteen times for the Trotters. 2020 - Mikel San José signed for Birmingham City, playing 28 times before terminating his contract by mutual consent the following May. 2021 – Former Academy Manager Steve Cooper was appointed Head Coach of Nottingham Forest. He took them from the bottom of the Championship into the Premier League in his first season, leading them to 42 wins in 108 games in charge before being sacked in December 2023. Big wins 1907 – Forward Joe Hewitt nabbed a brace as we won 4-0 at Bolton Wanderers with James Bradley and Robbie Robinson also on the scoresheet. 1996 - Patrik Berger netted twice to add to strikes from John Barnes and Robbie Fowler and an Andy Myers own goal, when he knelt down to head back towards his keeper as we beat Chelsea 5-1 at Anfield. Frank Leboeuf struck the visitors’ late consolation. This game was the 129th consecutive reds game Robbie had played in, but he sat out the next one, our return meeting with Finnish side Myllykosken Pallo-47 in the European Cup Winners’ Cup. Bennett’s treble 1918 - Thomas Bennett grabbed a hat-trick as we trounced Preston North End 8-0 in a Wartime League game at Anfield. Donald McKinlay nabbed a brace, while Arthur Metcalf, Harry Lewis and Harold Wadsworth all also scored. 1940 - We also met the Lilywhites in a wartime fixture, this time losing 5-0 at Deepdale. A great start for the knight 1959 - ‘Sir’ Roger Hunt scored on his reds debut as we beat Sc***horpe United 2-0 at Anfield, with Jimmy Melia bagging the other. Roger went on to notch 285 times in 492 reds games, a club record until the arrival of Ian Rush. 1961 - We also beat The Iron 2-1 in another Second Division meeting at Anfield thanks to a Derek Hemstead own goal and an Alan A’Court strike. This was our sixth straight win from the start of the season as we went on to clinch the title. A red stalwart moves on 1994 - Ronnie Whelan signed for Southend United, having been released by the reds at the end of the previous season. He had signed from Home Farm for £35,000 in September 1979 and played 493 reds games, netting 73 times and winning six League titles, one European Cup, two FA Cups, three League Cups and three FA Charity Shields. He turned out 35 times for the Shrimpers, netting once, and became Player/Manager the following summer. On the same day, Mark Walters joined Wolverhampton Wanderers on loan. He struck three times in eleven appearances for Wolves before returning to Anfield. Michael walks free 2009 - Michael Shields was finally released with a royal pardon after four years behind bars for a crime he did not commit in Bulgaria in the aftermath of the Champions League Final in Istanbul. Mad Dutchman Erik Meijer made his 27th and final appearance for the reds, as Dietmar Hamann scored a very rare brace as City fought back from two goals down before Hamann’s late winner. Ex-World Player of the Year George Weah scored his only League goal for City, with Kevin Horlock converting a spot-kick. 1893 – Winger Patrick Gordon bagged the first of his eight reds goals as we beat Lincoln City 4-0 in a Second Division fixture at Anfield. Left-half James McBride netted a brace with Malcolm McVean also on target. 1944 - Cyril Done was on target in his fourth consecutive reds game as we drew 2-2 with Manchester City at Anfield in a Wartime League match, with Berry Nieuwenhuys also on the scoresheet. 1911 - We were held by the same score in L4, with Jack Parkinson reach a century of League goals for the club and Ronald Orr also on target. Tommy Kelso struck twice from the spot for the Sky Blues. Debuting on the left 1912 - Left-half Joe Dines played his only reds game as we won 2-1 at Chelsea thanks to goals from Arthur Goddard and Tommy Gracie. He was killed on the Western Front in 1918. 1967 - We beat the Blues again, this time 3-1 at Anfield with Tommy Smith converting a penalty and Tony Hateley on the scoresheet twice. Keeper Tommy Lawrence played his 200th League game for the reds. 1933 - Left-back Jack Tennant made his reds bow as we went down 4-2 at Aston Villa, with Gordon Hodgson and Sam English on target. Eric Houghton struck two of his six goals past us for the home side, with Dai Astley bagging the first of his six and Alec Talbot also on target for the Villains. Triple centurion 1905 – Tom Watson took charge of his 300th reds League game as Blackburn Rovers won 3-1 at Anfield. Play was halted after 25 minutes due to torrential rain. Jack Cox put us in front, but an Adam Bowman brace gave the visitors a half-time lead. Bill Davies struck late on. Clem in charge 1978 – Ray Clemence skippered the reds in the absence of Emlyn Hughes as we won 3-0 at Birmingham City thanks to a brace from Graeme Souness and Alan Kennedy’s first reds strike, so apparently becoming the first red to captain the side from between the sticks. Garry Pendrey was sent off for the Blues after half an hour for a second bookable offence. Birth and death 1913 - Keeper Alf Hobson was born in County Durham. He signed from Shildon Colliery in April 1936 and made 28 reds appearances either side of the Second World War, as well as playing 171 wartime games. 2011 – Centre-half Laurie Hughes died. He signed from Tranmere Rovers in February 1943 and made 326 reds appearances, netting just once. He helped us to the first post-war League title and the FA Cup Final three years later and was the first red to appear in the World Cup Finals later that year. Derby despair 2006 - We lost 3-0 at Everton, our biggest derby defeat since September 1964, with Pepe Reina suffering a rare aberration. Tim Cahill opened the scoring with one of his five strikes past us before Andy Johnson added a brace. Heysel shame 1987 - 24 people were charged with involuntary manslaughter relating to the Heysel tragedy and extradited to Belgium. Fourteen people were eventually convicted. In comes Arnold 1970 - Midfielder Steve Arnold signed from Crewe Alexandra for £10,000, but only ever made one first-team appearance before moving to Rochdale in June 1973. His career never really took off, and he retired from the game aged 23. He only managed thirty senior appearances in two seasons at Hillsborough, scoring once, before moving to Ipswich Town in March 1999. 2005 - Former reserves defender Alan Navarro joined Accrington Stanley on a free transfer from Tranmere Rovers. Red trebles 2000 - Michael Owen scored a first half hat-trick past former team-mate David James as we defeated Aston Villa 3-1 at Anfield. He therefore became our first ever player to score two first-half hat-tricks in League games. Births and deaths 1892 - Scottish keeper Ken Campbell was born in Cambuslang, near Glasgow. He signed from Cambuslang Rangers in May 1911 and took over from Sam Hardy in the reds goal, playing 142 times including the 1914 FA Cup Final, before being replaced after the war by the great Elisha Scott. On exactly the same day, outside-left Albert Pearson was born in Tynemouth. He netted four times in 51 reds games after signing from Port Vale in March 1919, returning there two years later. 1988 - Jimmy Ryan was born in Maghull. The central midfielder joined League Two outfit Accrington Stanley in August 2008, having featured in both of our recent victorious FA Youth Cup campaigns, but failed to break into the first–team squad. 1948 – Half-back Bill Keech died. He played just six Second Division games in late 1895, having signed from Barnsley St. Peter’s that October, helping us to claim the title that season. He later played as a forward for Leicester Fosse, before returning to the half-back line with Queens Park Rangers’ first professional team in the Southern League. 2003 – Inside-forward Harold Jones died. He joined the reds in January 1952 but only made one senior appearance in a 5-1 thumping at Anfield by Preston North End in September 1953. He moved on to Rhyl in June 1954. The reds start out 1892 - We played our first ever competitive fixture, trouncing Higher Walton 8-0 in a Lancashire League fixture at Anfield, in front of a crowd of just 200. Jock Smith, Joe McQue and James Cameron all netted braces, with Malcolm McVean and John McBride also notching. West Derby-born Joe Pearson was the only non-Scot in this ‘Team of the Macs’, playing his only reds game. 1898 - We stepped out in red for the first time, as we beat The Wednesday 4-0 at Anfield, with centre-half Alex Raisbeck making his debut. We had played in blue and white quartered shirts until then. He was with the reds since the age of seven, signing as a professional in February 2020, making his only senior appearance off the bench in our League Cup tie against Derby County in November 2022. He moved on to Preston North End in July 2023. 2003 – Keeper Harvey Davies was also born in Liverpool. He has been with the reds since the age of nine, featuring on the bench eighteen times to date. 1985 - Former second choice keeper Scott Carson was born in Whitehaven. He made just nine senior reds appearances following his arrival from Leeds United for £750,000 in January 2005 but only managed to keep two clean sheets. He was sold to West Bromwich Albion for £3.25m in July 2008, after seasons on loan at first Charlton Athletic and then Aston Villa. 1974 – Rob Page was born in Llwynypia. The Welshman was appointed Under-21’s Head Coach in June 2025. 1964 - 1980’s Irish reserve midfielder Ken DeMange was born in Dublin. The defender skippered us to victory in the FA Youth Cup in 1996. Derby stalemate 2022 – We shared a goalless draw with Everton at Goodison Park with both sides hitting the woodwork. Red departures 1958 – Scottish inside-forward Tom Miller died. He netted 56 times in 146 reds games after signing from Hamilton Academical for £400 in February 1912, including an appearance in the 1914 FA Cup Final. However, he is also remembered as being one of the players caught up in the Manchester United match-rigging scandal of 1915, whom he joined in September 1920.His brother John was on the reds books alongside him immediately after the First World War. 1966 - Centre-half John Nicholson died in a car crash, just one day after his thirtieth birthday. He signed with the reds as a professional in January 1957 but only played one senior game before joining Port Vale in August 1961, playing over 200 games for them. 1995 – Right-winger Alex Muir died. He signed from Lochgelly Violet in July 1947, the same club that Billy Liddell was signed from. He only played four senior games before joining South Liverpool in 1949. 2025 – Scottish forward Bobby Graham passed on. He netted 42 times in 136 reds games after signing professional terms in November 1961 but often found himself behind first Ian St. John and then Kevin Keegan in the Anfield pecking order. He left for Coventry City in March 1972 for a £70,000 fee. On the same day, the appointment of Luiz Fernando Iubel as Individual Development Lead Coach was announced. Robbo in charge 2018 – Left-back Andy Robertson was appointed captain of Scotland. On the same day, Jordan Henderson signed a new contract with the reds. Gems on their way 2001 - Liverpool agreed a deal to sign Le Havre’s two young gems, Anthony Le Tallec and Florent Sinama-Pongolle, for a combined £6m fee, although they would remain in France for another two years. He struck once in two Wartime appearances for the reds. He gained six Scotland caps as well as scoring for Preston North End in every round of the FA Cup in 1937, including the Final. 1990 – Scottish reserves midfielder Gary Mackay-Steven was born in Thurso. He joined the reds in 2007 but failed to break through before being released two years later. 2006 – Forward Keyrol Figueroa was born in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. He was the hero of our first FA Cup triumph in 1965 when he played for 117 minutes of the final against Leeds United at Wembley with a broken collar bone sustained in an early challenge by Bobby Collins. He also won two League titles and the FA Charity Shield in his eleven years at Anfield, making a total of 333 reds appearances and scoring four times. 2008 – Left-winger Rio Ngumoha was born in Newham, London. He joined the reds from Chelsea’s Academy in the summer of 2024, making his senior bow in an FA Cup defeat of Accrington Stanley at Anfield the following January. He became the club’s youngest ever goalscorer in August 2025, scoring twice in thirty games in his first senior campaign. 1963 – Former First-team coach Steve Clarke was born in Saltcoats, Scotland. He was appointed in January 2011 following Kenny Dalglish’s return to the hot seat, signing a new three-year contract four months later. Espanyol later that season. 1911 – Scottish left-back Bob Pursell signed from Queen’s Park for £360, with the reds initially making an illegal approach. He was then involved in the 1915 match-fixing scandal with Manchester United. A big day for Phil 1962 - Left-back Phil Ferns made his reds bow in our 4-1 defeat of Manchester City at Anfield, our first win back in the top flight, with our goals coming from Ian St. John, Alan A’Court and a Roger Hunt brace. In rides Crazy Horse 1947 - Emlyn Hughes was born in Barrow-in-Furness. ‘Crazy Horse’ played 665 times in his twelve years at Anfield after signing from Blackpool for a club record £65,000 in February 1967, netting 49 times and winning two European Cups, four League titles, two UEFA Cups, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and two FA Charity Shields before joining Wolverhampton Wanderers for £90,000 in August 1979. His greatest season was probably 1976/77 when he captained the side to within a whisker of a unique treble, as well as being voted the Football Writers’ Player of the Year. Sadly, he died in November 2004, aged just 57. God’s rapid-fire hat-trick 1994 - Robbie Fowler scored a hat-trick in a five-minute first-half spell as we beat Arsenal 3-0 at Anfield, in front of just 30,017 in the first game after the Kop became all seated. 1999 - He also struck as we again beat the Gunners 2-0 at Anfield, with Patrik Berger also on the scoresheet as Dominic Matteo reached a century of League outings for the reds. 1967 - We also played them, going down 2-0 at Highbury. Javier the champion 2004 - Future red Javier Mascherano helped Argentina to claim Olympic gold as they beat Paraguay 1-0 in the Final in Athens. Paraguay had both Emilio Martínez and Diego Figueredo sent off. The new Kemlyn 1963 - We played in front of the new Kemlyn Road cantilever stand for the first time, while part of the Anfield Road terracing was unavailable due to structural work. Unfortunately, we lost 2-1 to Nottingham Forest, with Forest’s Bob McKinlay scoring for the reds, the fiftieth time we had benefited from an own goal to date in the League. Bruce at last 1984 - Bruce Grobbelaar won his final senior international cap as Zimbabwe lost 1-0 in the first leg of a World Cup qualifier in Egypt. Another super win 2005 - We fell behind to a goal from CSKA Moskva’s Velizar Dimitrov in Monaco, but a brace from substitute Djibril Cissé and a Luis García strike secured us the UEFA Super Cup for the third time, 3-1 after extra time, as we reached a century of goals under the stewardship of Rafael Benítez. The cup was lifted by stand-in skipper Jamie Carragher. Danny’s wonder goal 2006 - Daniel Agger scored his first reds goal, a superb long-range effort to level the scores in our 2-1 home defeat of West Ham United after Bobby Zamora had put the Hammers ahead in our fiftieth League meeting at Anfield. Dirk Kuyt made his debut as a second-half substitute after Peter Crouch had handed us the lead on the stroke of half time. 1972 - We also entertained the Irons, winning 3-2. Bryan ‘Pop’ Robson bagged a brace for the visitors, two of his five goals against the reds, with the scores levelled by John Toshack and then a Bobby Ferguson own goal before Emlyn Hughes grabbed the winner. Most recently 2012 – We were held to a 2-2 draw at Anfield by the reigning champions Manchester City, with Lucas having to go off early with a thigh injury. Martin Škrtel opened the scoring with a header, with Yaya Touré equalising before a Luis Suárez free-kick put us back in front. However, Carlos Tévez capitalised on a slack Škrtel back-pass to hand the visitors a share of the spoils, the most recent of his four goals past us to date. Andy Carroll made his 58th and last reds appearance, from off the bench. Red births 1882 - Legendary keeper Sam Hardy was born in Newbold, Chesterfield. He signed from his hometown club for £340 in May 1905 and helped us to our second League title in his first season, going on to make 240 appearances before joining Aston Villa for £1,500 in May 1912. 1888 – Defender Ernest Peake was born in Aberystwyth. He arrived as a Welsh international from his hometown club Aberystwyth Town in May 1908, netting six times in 55 games before joining Third Lanark in May 1914 1945 - Full-back Tom Lowry was born in Liverpool. He signed pro terms in April 1963 but only ever played one first-team game, when Bill Shankly fielded a team of eleven reserves in our League match at Wolverhampton Wanderers, which came only five days before the 1965 FA Cup Final. He moved on to Crewe Alexandra in June 1966, going on to set their club record of 436 League appearances that stands to this day. Hola and arrivederci 2007 – Argentine left-back Emiliano Insúa signed from Boca Juniors for £1.675m, having initially joined on loan seven months earlier. He made 62 senior appearances, netting his only goal in our Carling Cup defeat at Arsenal in October 2009. He joined Galatasaray on loan in August 2010, moving on to Sporting Clube de Portugal permanently a year later. 2011 - Alberto Aquilani joined AC Milan on loan, having spent the previous campaign with Juventus. He netted once in 25 games for the Rossoneri, before being sold to Fiorentina earlier this month. 2016 – Nigerian forward Taiwo Awoniyi joined Nijmegen Eendracht Combinatie on loan, scoring three times in 21 games. Outside the Shankly Gates 1982 - Nessie Shankly officially opened the Shankly Gates at Anfield. Trebles all round 1967 - Tony Hateley scored a hat-trick, his first reds goals that included a penalty, in our 6-0 thumping of Newcastle United. Emlyn Hughes also struck for the first time for the reds in the same game, with a Roger Hunt brace completing the scoring. 1953 - We also entertained the Geordies, with Kevin Baron on target twice in our 2-2 draw. 1961 - Hunt bagged a treble as we thumped Leeds United 5-0 at Anfield, our record equal victory over the Yorkshiremen. Mickey’s milestones 2000 - Michael Owen netted his 49th and fiftieth League goals, in his 98th appearance, although we ended up drawing 3-3 with Southampton in our last game at The Dell, having led 3-0 with just seventeen minutes remaining. The brace took Owen to seven goals in as many games against the Saints. Sami Hyypiä grabbed our other goal. Marian Pahars netted twice with Tahar El Khalej also on target for the home side. Owen’s second strike was also the club’s 8,000th in all competitions. Digger’s ton 1995 - John Barnes’ second goal in our 3-1 win at Tottenham Hotspur was his hundredth reds strike, while Robbie Fowler netted his fiftieth reds goal.
