Technically, that's an infinite increase šŸ˜›
  3. Listening to this again has got me pondering... I'm sure there are other (non-Woody) examples of people setting unpublished lyrics to music after the author has died, but i can't think who right now. Any suggestions?
  4. Summer sunshine pop for this lovely morning
  5. Time to dig that one out again! Listening to this album right now:
  6. Dug out my CD of Sunflower and Surf's Up for the first time in some years - reminds me of how brilliant the latter is (at least to this point in the album), and how good-but-not-great the former is

    Statues hmmmmm

I'm pretty confident it isn't, yes. I suppose it might not actually be named after anyone in particular, but probably a councillor someone equally essential

    Statues hmmmmm

I'm doing my best. I live on a street called Ronald Road - presumably named after someone 'worthy' called Ronald. Perhaps unsurprisingly, I have no idea who he might be. As it's not been mentioned lately, I am assuming whoever he (or of course she...) was, he wasn't a slave trader. I've never been curious enough to try to find out. For the avoidance of any doubt, yes, naming the stand after King Kenny is clearly an honour Not sure naming a stand after someone still living a couple of years ago compares with a street that was given a name a century or more (?) ago. Firstly because a stand is somewhat more impressive than 'just' a road; secondly, it's named after someone very closely associated with what it is; and thirdly it's very recent

Not sure any of that applies in this case though - people are just deciding they don't want slavers honoured in the ways they have been in the past; don't think this is based on any uncovering of new facts or perspectives, it's just (some) people are more willing to listen to those perspectives or take them on as their own views. Not sure if that's all that clear - or even that relevant

    Statues hmmmmm

By the way, it appears that Penny Lane was not named after the slave trader called Penny, but something else entirely, so I'm far more relaxed about this issue now šŸ˜‰ I don't think anyone complaining about "rewriting history" would agree with your definition. In fact, what you are describing is "reinterpreting history" or "reanalysing history" I would say, but then maybe we are getting too (?!?) pedantic

No doubt the intention was to honour them. I have no idea which particular slave trader Bold Street in Liverpool is named after, for example - I'd suggest there's very little honour still being bestowed on him.

    Statues hmmmmm

Iā€™m not convinced the simple use of a surname is doing much honouring to be honest.

    Statues hmmmmm

Ha! Partly - but so what if a street name 'glorifies' someone? No-one necessarily knows (OK, plenty do in this instance), and it's not much of a glorification as it's not called James Penny Lane or Slave Trader Penny Lane and it's not a whopping grand carving of the man, just the use of his name. And certainly in this case the street name is much, much, much more famous for a song than for a slave trader

While I have no problem with the removal of slave trader statues (and perhaps the odd one can end up in a museum; not sure we need museums stuffed full of them...), I'm less convinced by the need to change the names of streets as I don't really see that as glorifying the people in the same way as a statue (or a concert hall - they should probably have their names changed too, no problem there)

I didn't think there was any doubt whatsoever that this would happen
  17. I''m continuing a bit of a Stones patch (listened to Aftermath last week too) by revisiting Let It Bleed, which I believe might be my favourite of their albums, but we shall see...

This thread is making me really angry. Largely because people don't know the difference between to affect something, or the effect that creates
  19. Listening to the Stones' Beggars Banquet for the first time in at least a decade. Apart from the two big hits, it's very meh, and I'd forgotten how country-tinged it was
