Match of the Day 1964 - Our 3-2 win over Arsenal at Anfield was the first game ever to be screened on the BBC’s new “Match Of The Day” show. Phil Chisnall was the first player to kick a ball on MOTD, knocking the kick-off to Gordon Wallace, who grabbed a brace, his final reds goals, including the winner that deflected off Don Howe past ex-reds keeper Jim Furnell. Roger Hunt headed in the first goal on the show that only garnered an audience of 75,000 as BBC2 was still unavailable in large parts of the country. Future red Geoff Strong scored for the Gunners, with Joe Baker bagging one of his four past us, while a black cat did a full lap of the pitch! Soto departs 2011 – Greek centre-half Sotirios Kyrgiakos joined VfL Wolfsburg on a free transfer. He had arrived from A.E.K Athens for £2m two years earlier, following the summer departure of Sami Hyypiä. Soto bagged three goals in 49 largely solid performances at the back, becoming something of a cult figure for his no-nonsense style. On the same day, Steve Staunton joined Sunderland as a scout. 2015 – Full-back Tom Lowry died. He signed pro terms in April 1963 but only ever played one first-team game, when Bill Shankly fielded a team of eleven reserves in our League match at Wolverhampton Wanderers, which came only five days before the 1965 FA Cup Final. He moved on to Crewe Alexandra in June 1966, going on to set their club record of 436 League appearances that stands to this day. Bert’s bow 1959 - Goalkeeper Bert Slater made his reds debut as we lost 3-2 at Cardiff City in our first game of the season. Cardiff in fact scored all five goals, as we benefited from two own goals from the unfortunate Danny Malloy, who had already scored an own goal against the reds two years earlier! Johnny Watkins netted the first of his four goals against us, with Graham Moore and Steve Mokone also on target. Seventies wins 1970 - We thumped Huddersfield Town 4-0 at Anfield with John McLaughlin netting his first two reds goals as Alun Evans also grabbed a brace. Forward Bobby Graham played his hundredth reds game. 1978 - We won another top-flight fixture, this time 3-0 at FA Cup holders Ipswich Town, when Graeme Souness struck before a Kenny Dalglish double, with Ray Kennedy playing his 200th reds game. Eight goals shared with the mancs 1953 - Centre-forward Louis Bimpson struck twice at Anfield, but it was not enough to hand us victory over Manchester United, as the game ended 4-4, with Billy Liddell and Bill Jones also on the scoresheet. Jack Rowley struck the last of his six goals past us, with Tommy Taylor nabbing the first of his four against the reds and Eddie Lewis and Roger Byrne also on target. 2022 - Mohamed Salah scored a club record tenth goal against Manchester United, in a joint club record fourth consecutive game against the Red Devils, also becoming the club’s eighth top all-time goalscorer. However, it was only a late consolation as we lost 2-1 thanks to a Jadon Sancho strike and one of Marcus Rashford’s seven goals against us. In and out 2007 - Centre-half Mikel San José signed from Athletic de Bilbao, while keeper Péter Gulácsi arrived on loan from MTK Hungária. The young Hungarian made it into our match-day squad 51 times before moving to Red Bull Salzburg for free in June 2013, while San José did the same at Stamford Bridge in the League in February 2008, although he left for Athletic de Bilbao in May 2010. 2005 - It was a busy day at Melwood, with one arrival and two players departing on loan. Austrian midfielder Besian Idrizaj signed from LASK for £190,000, while Robbie Foy moved to Wrexham and John Welsh signed for Hull City. Welsh struck twice in 23 games before signing permanently for the Tigers in January 2006 in a swap deal for winger Paul Anderson. Foy nabbed three goals in twenty games while at the Racecourse Ground. On the same day, ex-reds loanee keeper Paul Jones joined Millwall on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers. He played four times for the struggling South London outfit. 2006 - Foy signed for Sc***horpe United on non-contract terms. He struck once in nine outings for the Iron but was released after just a season. 2009 - Idrizaj signed for Swansea City. He played four times for the Swans before tragically dying in May 2010 of a suspected heart attack at the age of just 22. A new striker 1893 - Centre-forward James Henderson signed from Scottish side Annbank. He only ever made one first-team appearance for the reds, in our first ever Football League fixture, a 2-0 Second Division win at Middlesbrough Ironopolis. Kenny resigns 1996 - Kenny Dalglish resigned as Director of Football at Blackburn Rovers. He had led them to the League title as team manager the year before. St. Michael signs on 1998 - Michael Owen signed a new five-year contract ten minutes before our first home game of the season, when Arsenal held us to a goalless draw at Anfield. Also recently 2006 - We squeezed into the group stage of the Champions League, being held to a 1-1 draw by Maccabi Haifa in Kyiv in the second leg of our Third Qualifying Round tie, to progress 3-2. Peter Crouch headed us in front, with the reds wasting numerous chances to build a convincing lead. We also suffered injuries to Momo Sissoko and Stephen Warnock, who joined Jamie Carragher and John Arne Riise on the sidelines. 1993 - Our most recent game before that came when Steve McManaman struck twice in a 5-0 thumping of Swindon Town at their County Ground. Neil Ruddock bagged his first reds goal as Ronnie Whelan bagged his 73rd and final strike for the club. Mike Marsh netted his last reds goal in his hundredth game for the club. A win in Ireland 1981 - Terry McDermott grabbed a brace, with Ronnie Whelan, Phil Neal and Kenny Dalglish also scoring, as we thumped Ronnie’s former side Home Farm 5-0 at Tolka Park in Dublin. This game had been arranged as part of Whelan’s transfer to Anfield. However, the match was almost cancelled after a massive H was carved into the pitch the night before in support of IRA hunger strikers. Emergency re-turfing saved the game with the reds flying over in the afternoon for the evening fixture. International reds 2007 - Young Brazilian midfielder Lucas Leiva made his senior international debut in their 2-0 friendly defeat of Algeria in Montpellier, playing alongside future reds keeper Alexander Doni. Ryan Babel, Yossi Benayoun, Fernando Torres and Andriy Voronin all won their first caps as reds players, while Luis García made his first appearance while with Club Atlético de Madrid, as Spain won 3-2 in Greece with Xabi Alonso and Pepe Reina also in action. Ukraine beat Uzbekistan 2-1, with Israel beaten 2-1 in Belarus and the Netherlands losing 2-1 in Switzerland with Dirk Kuyt on target, and future reds Philipp Degen and John Heitinga also featuring. Future red Robbie Keane bagged a brace as the Republic of Ireland thumped Daniel Agger’s Denmark 4-0 in Copenhagen, with Steve Finnan and ex-red Darren Potter also in Steve Staunton’s line-up. David James won his first cap as a Portsmouth player as England lost 2-1 to Germany at Wembley, with Peter Crouch, future red Joe Cole and ex-red Michael Owen also playing. Javier Mascherano faced John Arne Riise with future red Maxi Rodríguez netting as Norway beat Argentina 2-1 in Oslo, while future red Ragnar Klavan was sent off as Estonia beat Andorra 2-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Tallinn. Also in international action that day were Sami Hyypiä, future reds Alberto Aquilani, Milan Jovanović, Alex Manninger, Raul Meireles, Mamadou Sakho and Kolo Touré, ex-reds Nicolas Anelka, Milan Baroš, Daniel Sjölund and Rigobert Song, with Roy Hodgson and John Toshack both on management duties. On the move 2008 – Reserves forward Craig Lindfield joined Bournemouth on loan. He struck once in five outings for the Cherries. 2005 - Paul Dalglish signed for Livingston from Modena. He struck six times in 23 games before moving to Hibernian in January 2006. 2003 - Former reserves midfielder Phil Charnock signed for basement side Bury on a free transfer from Port Vale, although he only stayed two weeks at Gigg Lane, playing three times. 1986 - Former reserves centre-back Dave Watson made his big move, leaving Norwich City for Everton for a fee of £900,000. At the time his brother Alex was still playing in our reserves. 1997 - Future reds keeper Pegguy Arphexad signed for Leicester City from Racing Club de Lens on a free transfer. He only played 29 times for the Foxes, before switching to Anfield in July 2000. 2012 – Danish midfielder Christian Poulsen signed for Ajax, whom he helped to claim the League title in his first season in Amsterdam. 2019 – Midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain signed a new contract, having struck five times in 47 outings to date since arriving from Arsenal for £35m two years earlier. 2022 – Forward David Amoo signed for Stevenage, scoring once in thirteen outings before moving on to Crewe Alexandra after just five months. Other reds games 1967 – We beat Arsenal 2-0 at Anfield with Roger Hunt scoring twice past ex-reds custodian Jim Furnell. 1962 – We drew 2-2 at Manchester City. Neil Young struck the first two of his four goals against the reds, after first Ronnie Moran had converted a penalty and then Roger Hunt scored. 1949 – Stoke City held us to a goalless draw at the Victoria Ground. Billy’s day 2019 – Billy Koumetio won his second and final cap for France Under-18’s in their 1-1 friendly draw with Paraguay. Isaac Mabaya featured for England Under-16’s on the same day as they were held to a 3-3 friendly draw by the Republic of Ireland at St. George’s Park. 2020 – Koumetio played his first games for the club, as did left-back Kostas Tsimikas in our 3-0 defeat of VfB Stuttgart in a behind closed doors friendly in Austria. Roberto Firmino, Naby Keïta and Rhian Brewster all scored. Also in international action 1990 - Stig Inge Bjørnebye, then still with Kongsvinger, won his eighth cap for Norway as they lost 2-1 at home to Sweden in a friendly, played in Stavanger. 1993 - Gérard Houllier managed France as they drew a World Cup qualifier 1-1 in Sweden. On the same day, future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel played for Brazil as they beat Ecuador 2-0 in a World Cup qualifier in São Paulo. 2017 – Bobby Duncan featured for England Under-17’s in their 2-1 defeat by Italy in Kidderminster, with ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper in charge. 2023 – Future red Rio Ngumoha played for England Under-16’s as they lost a friendly 3-1 in Italy. -
Double debutants 1987 - John Barnes and new record signing Peter Beardsley both made their official reds debuts as we beat Arsenal 2-1 at Highbury, thanks to goals from John Aldridge and Steve Nicol, who scored an extraordinary header from the edge of the penalty box. This was Kenny Dalglish’s fiftieth League win as reds boss, coming in his 85th game - still the best record of any reds boss. Ronnie Whelan played his 200th League game for the reds that day. Happy birthday Ox 1993 – Midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was born in Portsmouth. He signed from Arsenal for £35m in August 2017, netting eighteen times in 146 appearances before being released in the summer of 2023. He made it back from serious injury to sit on the bench as we claimed the UEFA Champions League in Madrid in June 2019 and helping us to claim the Premier League, FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup. Clem departs 1981 – Ray Clemence was sold to Tottenham Hotspur for £300,000. He had arrived from Sc***horpe United for £18,000 in June 1967, usurping Tommy Lawrence as first choice number one after two years. He went on to make 665 reds appearances, winning five League titles, an FA Cup, three European Cups, two UEFA Cups, League Cup, UEFA Super Cup and four FA Charity Shields in his fourteen years at Anfield. Also moving on 1974 - Centre-half Larry Lloyd was sold to Coventry City for £240,000. He is one of a rare breed to leave Anfield in his prime and go on to better things – helping Nottingham Forest to two European Cups, one League title, League Cup and FA Charity Shield. He had won League and UEFA Cup medals after joining the reds from Bristol Rovers for £50,000 in April 1969, appearing 218 times and notching five times. 1976 – Kevin Keegan confirmed that the upcoming season would be his final one at Anfield. He struck twenty times in 57 outings in this campaign, helping us to claim the European Cup and League title, and reach the FA Cup Final. 1991 – David Speedie left the reds to join Blackburn Rovers. He had struck six times in fourteen outings since signing from Coventry City for £675,000 seven months earlier. Dismissals galore 2010 – Joe Cole was sent off for a challenge on Laurent Koscielny just before half-time in our Anfield meeting with Arsenal. David N’Gog put us in front immediately after the break, with the lead lasting until the last minute when Marouane Chamakh diverted a cross against the post and Pepe Reina spilled the rebound into his own net. Koscielny was then sent off for a second bookable offence in injury-time. This turned out to be Javier Mascherano’s 139th and final reds game. 2022 - Darwin Núñez was dismissed in our 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace at Anfield. Wilfred Zaha put the Eagles in front before the break, but the Uruguayan was sent off for headbutting Joachim Andersen. Luis Díaz bagged the equaliser, Other birthdays 1988 – Moroccan winger Oussama Assaidi was born in Beni-Boughafar. He signed from Dutch side SC Heerenveen for £2.4m in August 2012, failing to score in twelve appearances before spending a season and a half on loan at Stoke City. He was sold to UAE Arabian Gulf League side Al Ahli for a reported £4.7m in January 2015. 1905 - Centre-forward Tommy Reid was born in Motherwell. He signed from Clydebank for £1,000 in April 1926 and bagged an impressive thirty goals in 55 games before moving to Manchester United in February 1929. Off the mark 2017 – Trent Alexander-Arnold scored his first senior goal as we won 2-1 at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim in the first leg of our UEFA Champions League qualifier. Simon Mignolet saved a penalty, with forward Dominic Solanke making his reds bow as we benefited when Havard Nordtveit inadvertently diverted a James Milner cross into his own net. 2007 - Yossi Benayoun made his reds debut as Andriy Voronin’s first reds strike proved to be the only goal of the first leg of our Champions League qualifier in Toulouse, who became our hundredth different opponents in European competition. Happy birthday Boudewijn 1976 - Bolo Zenden was born in Maastricht in the Netherlands. He signed on a free transfer in July 2005 after his one-year contract with Middlesbrough had expired. He notched twice in 47 senior reds games, as injury hampered his career at Anfield. He helped us to claim the UEFA Super Cup and FA Community Shield, as well as reach the Champions League Final in his brief time with the reds. Bolo left the club in July 2007 to join Olympique de Marseille. 2021 – Former Director Terry Smith died at Arrowe Park Hospital in Birkenhead. He was on the board from 1992 until 2007. Charity at first 1964 - We played in our first FA Charity Shield, only drawing 2-2 with West Ham United at Anfield. Gordon Wallace and Gerry Byrne twice gave us the lead, with John Byrne and Geoff Hurst both netting equalisers, with the latter being one of his nine strikes against the reds. The trophy was shared between the two clubs, as this was in the days before extra-time and penalty shoot-outs. Phil Chisnall made his reds bow in this game when he became the first ever substitute in senior English football, replacing Alf Arrowsmith after just a quarter of an hour, who had suffered a serious knee injury. Red defenders on the way out 1991 - Gary Gillespie was sold to his boyhood heroes Celtic for £925,000. He had been Joe Fagan’s first signing, helping us to three League titles in his eight injury-ravaged years at Anfield, scoring sixteen times in 214 appearances. 2002 - Young full-back Stephen Wright joined Sunderland for £3m, after just 21 reds games. He netted twice in 105 games for them, with injuries blighting his time there, and was released in May 2008. Double capture 2005 - Liverpool confirmed the signings of young centre-backs Godwin Antwi from Real Zaragoza and Miki Roqué from U.E. Lleida. Both featured in our victorious FA Youth Cup winning campaign in 2006, but only made one senior appearance between them, when Roque made a late cameo at Galatasaray in December 2006. 1996 - Patrik Berger signed from Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund for £3.25m, following an impressive Euro ’96. He scored 35 times in 196 reds games, before joining Portsmouth in June 2003. 1983 – Winger Brian Mooney signed from Home Farm for £20,000. He only ever played one senior reds game, as a substitute for Jim Beglin in a League Cup win at Fulham in October 1986, moving on to Preston North End in November 1987. 1970’s League wins We twice played League games on this day in the 1970’s, winning them both. 1970 - We won 2-1 at Burnley, with Alun Evans and Emlyn Hughes on target. 1972 - We beat Manchester United 2-0 at Anfield, thanks to strikes from John Toshack and Steve Heighway. Ex-reds on the move 1997 - Ian Rush signed for Newcastle United on a free transfer from Leeds United. He only made fourten appearances for the Magpies, scoring twice, including one that made him the all-time top scorer in the FA Cup, with 44 goals in the competition. 1985 - Gary McAllister joined Leicester City from Motherwell along with clubmate Ally Mauchlen for a combined £250,000. He struck 52 times in 225 appearances for the Foxes, before joining Leeds United for £1m in July 1990. 2003 - Steve Staunton joined Coventry City on a free transfer from Aston Villa. He notched four times in 75 games for the Sky Blues before joining Walsall two years later. 2011 – Robbie Keane joined LA Galaxy from Tottenham Hotspur for £3.5m, so far bagging 97 goals in 145 outings for the American outfit and becoming their captain. Losing finalists 1982 - We lost the Final of the Málaga Tournament to the home side. We drew 1-1 after extra time, with our goal coming from Alan Kennedy, but lost the penalty shoot-out 4-2. The game started so late that the action did not come to an end until around 1:15am. Terry McDermott and Phil Neal converted their spot-kicks, with David Hodgson’s being saved and Howard Gayle sending his over the crossbar Management moves 2005 - Roy Hodgson was appointed Manager of Finland. He narrowly failed to take them to the European Championships Finals in 2008, as they fell just one goal short of reaching their first ever major tournament. He chose not to renew his contract when it expired in November 2007, taking over at Fulham the following month. 2020 - Jürgen Klopp was named Premier League Manager of the Season for 2019-20, having led us as we romped to the Premier League title. On the same day, Chris Morgan re-joined the red as a first-team physiotherapist. Reds in Ireland 1994 - We beat Dundalk 2-1 in a friendly at Oriel Park, with Robbie Fowler and Michael Thomas on the scoresheet. International friendly firsts and lasts 2012 – Charlie Adam won his last cap as a reds player as Scotland beat Australia 3-1 at Easter Road, while Nuri Şahin made his final appearance for Turkey before joining the reds on loan as Turkey lost 2-0 to Austria in Vienna. Joe Allen represented Wales for the first time since moving to Anfield as they lost 2-0 to Bosnia-Herzegovina in Llanelli, with Craig Bellamy playing his first international in his second spell as a Cardiff City player. Meanwhile, Raul Meireles won his last cap as a Chelsea player in Portugal’s 2-0 victory over Panama in Faro, while Christian Benteke scored his first senior goal for Belgium, and only one as a Koninklijke Racing Club Genk player, in their 4-2 friendly defeat of the Netherlands in Brussels. Daniel Agger reached a half century of caps in Denmark’s 3-1 defeat by Martin Škrtel’s Slovakia in Odense. On the same day, ex-red Alexander Kačaniklić made his senior bow in Sweden’s 3-0 defeat by Brazil in Solna, while Alberto Aquilani won his first cap as a Fiorentina player as Italy lost 2-1 to Roy Hodgson’s England in Bern. Xherdan Shaqiri won his last cap as a Basel player in Switzerland’s 4-2 win in Croatia, while Fulham’s John Arne Riise struck in Norway’s 3-2 loss to Greece in Oslo, with Krisztián Németh playing for Hungary for the first time while with Roda JC Kerkrade in their 1-1 draw with Israel in Budapest. Olympian Raul 2004 – Future red Raul Meireles played for Portugal in the Olympics Finals, featuring as they beat Morocco 2-1 in a group game in Greece. Also on the move 2014 – Portuguese midfielder João Teixeira joined Brighton & Hove Albion on loan, being voted their Young Player of the Year after six strikes in 35 games, despite breaking his leg towards the end of the campaign. Happy birthday Jocky 1955 - Alan Hansen was born in Sauchie, Clackmannan, Stirlingshire. He signed from Partick Thistle for £100,000 in May 1977 and was a classy figure in the centre of our defence on 620 occasions, notching fourteen times and helping us to an amazing trophy haul including eight League titles, three European Cups, two FA Cups, three League Cups and four FA Charity Shields. Other birthdays 1944 - Inside-left Gordon Wallace was born in Lanark. He signed professional terms in July 1961 but only made 22 first-team appearances, netting six times, with his most famous game being the first to be screened on the BBC’s Match Of The Day programme, when he grabbed a brace as we beat Arsenal 3-2 at Anfield in August 1964. He had also netted twice on our European debut against Icelandic champions Knattspyrnufélag Reykjavíkur earlier that week. He left in October 1967 to join Crewe Alexandra. 1941 - Tony Hateley was born in Derby. He became our record signing when he joined from Chelsea in July 1967 for £96,000 and got off to a flyer at Anfield, grabbing 27 goals in 52 appearances in his first season. Unfortunately, injuries took their toll, and he was sold to Coventry City only fourteen months after arriving at the club, after 28 goals in 56 outings in total. He was a fine header of the ball in his prime, as was his son, England international striker Mark. Vladi departs 2005 - Vladimír Šmicer signed for Girondins de Bordeaux on a free transfer. He had made 184 reds appearances following his £3.75m transfer from Racing Club de Lens in May 1999, scoring nineteen times, including a crucial strike in Istanbul. As well as the Champions League, he helped us to claim the UEFA Cup, FA Cup and two League Cups. 1974 – Midfielder Trevor Storton was sold to Chester. George arrives 1895 – Centre-forward George Allan signed from Leith Athletic for £100. He went on to score 56 goals in 96 reds games across two spells, but had to endure an eight-match suspension from the Scottish FA later that year as he had also signed for St. Bernard’s at the same time as moving to Anfield! He also has the distinction of being the first reds player to represent Scotland. Defenders on their way out 2016 – Ex-reds left-back John Arne Riise announced his retirement from football. He made 348 reds appearances, scoring 31 times, following his £4m arrival from AS Monaco in June 2001, but left for Roma for the same fee in June 2008. He helped us to win the European Cup, FA Cup, League Cup, two UEFA Super Cups and two FA Charity Shields in his time at Anfield. He also became his country’s most capped player, winning 110 in total. 2023 – Right-back Calvin Ramsay joined Preston North End on loan, but only made two senior appearances for the Lilywhites. 2007 - Jon Otsemobor joined Norwich City on a free transfer from Crewe Alexandra, after one goal in 65 outings for the Alex in total. 2006 - Young American centre-back Zak Whitbread joined Millwall for £200,000 after a successful loan spell as they were relegated to League One. Auf wiedersehen Kev 1977 - Kevin Keegan joined German side Hamburger SV for £500,000, a record fee for a British footballer and the most expensive player to that date in the Bundesliga. In comes Stéph 1999 - Stéphane Henchoz signed from relegated Blackburn Rovers for £3.5m, two weeks after his future partner Sami Hyypiä arrived from Dutch side Willem II. Stéph failed to score in his 205 reds appearances, but was a defensive rock, helping us to claim the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Charity Shield and two League Cups before joining Celtic in January 2005. More red farewells 2012 – Dutch forward Dirk Kuyt was sold to Fenerbahçe Spor Kulübü for €1m. He had arrived from Feyenoord for £9m in August 2006, with then Chairman David Moores having to lend the club the money for the transfer. He proved a willing worker, notching 71 times in 285 outings, including our consolation in the Champions League Final in Athens in 2007 and five derby strikes. He helped the club to claim the Carling Cup and reach the FA Cup Final in his final season in England. 1966 – Left-winger George Pither died. He struck once in twelve senior appearances after signing from Merthyr Town for £500 in November 1926, stepping in for the established Fred Hopkin. He moved to Crewe Alexandra in May 1928. 1944 - Right-back Alf West left Anfield for Reading, becoming their club captain but he only stayed for a season before returning to Anfield in May 1910. He helped us to the Second Division championship in 1905 and our second League title a year later. He only played five times in this second spell before joining Notts County in July 1911. 1919 - James Scott left the reds to sign for Dumbarton back in his native Scotland, having made just ten senior reds appearances since signing from Ardeer Thistle in 1910. Fourteen without reply 1964 - We trounced a San Franciscan Select 14-0 on our North American tour, our record ever victory in any fixture, shortly after clinching our sixth League title. Clinching the title 1979 - A 3-0 defeat of Aston Villa at Anfield handed us our eleventh League title, thanks to goals from Alan Kennedy, Kenny Dalglish and Terry McDermott. We ended the season with a record 68 points and record goal difference of +69, having only conceded sixteen League goals during the entire campaign. This game was originally postponed from New Year’s Day. The arrival of an Anfield legend 1939 - Left-half Bob Paisley signed from Bishop Auckland for a £10 signing-on fee, and £5 per week. He served the club well in his 277 games, notching twelve times, before joining the training staff. He eventually succeeded Bill Shankly in 1974, becoming the most successful manager in English football history. 1894 - A rather less notable Anfield servant arrived in L4. This was particularly impressive considering that he had to take painkillers before the game for a niggling groin injury and had only been passed fit two hours before the game. Kenny Dalglish netted the other goal, his 99th in the League for the reds. Amazingly, Tony Woodcock grabbed five goals for Arsenal on the same day, in their 6-2 victory at Aston Villa. He’s red, he’s white 2000 - Nick Barmby scored against Everton at the Anny Road end, before Kevin Campbell equalised with one of his four goals against the reds. We steamrollered our way to a 3-1 win in the second half, thanks to an Emile Heskey strike and a Patrik Berger penalty, after Vladimír Šmicer was felled by Thomas Gravesen, who was sent off. 1996 - Barmby arrived at Goodison from Middlesbrough for £5.75m. He later revealed that his father had died earlier that day, “That goal was for my dad. It contributed to an extremely emotional day in my life. I did not want to let my team-mates down, which is why I insisted on playing. Happy birthday Phil 1942 - Phil Chisnall was born in Manchester. He signed from Manchester United for £25,000 in April 1964, after ten goals in 47 United games. Sadio Mané added the other two goals as we went top of the table after ten League fixtures. 2019 – We beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 in L4 despite Harry Kane putting the visitors in front inside a minute, with one of his nine strikes past us. Jordan Henderson equalised after the break with Mohamed Salah bagging the winner from the spot. This result left is with a six-point lead at the top of the table after ten games. Happy birthdays 1961 - Ian Rush was born in St. Asaph. His club record 346 strikes in 660 games across two spells with the reds helped us to five League titles, the European Cup, three FA Cups, five League Cups, two FA Charity Shields and the Screen Sport Super Cup, after signing from Chester for just £300,000 in April 1980, moving on to Leeds United in May 1996. 1943 - Chris Lawler was born in Liverpool. He signed pro terms on his seventeenth birthday and struck 61 times in 549 reds appearances, helping us to win two League titles, an FA Cup, UEFA Cup and FA Charity Shield before moving to Portsmouth in October 1975. He later returned to the club in the 1980’s as Reserve Team Manager. 1984 - Forward Florent Sinama-Pongolle was born in Saint-Pierre on Réunion Island. He netted nine times in 66 reds games, joining Real Club Recreativo de Huelva for €4m in May 2007 after a loan spell. Dirk at the double 2007 - Dirk Kuyt converted two spot-kicks as we came from behind to win 2-1 at Everton. The Blues had fortuitously gone ahead through a Sami Hyypiä own goal, but we equalised after Tony Hibbert brought down Steven Gerrard, with the defender rightly being dismissed. Lucas was denied the stoppage time winning goal by Phil Neville’s handball on the line, for which he too was red-carded. Mark Clattenburg joined the lengthy list of referees castigated by Blues due to both his failure to send Kuyt off for a strong challenge on the home side’s skipper, and the lack of a penalty given for Jamie Carragher’s tussle with Joleon Lescott in the box immediately after we had finally taken the lead. Ten a side at Anfield 1979 - Terry McDermott and Everton’s Garry Stanley were sent off for fighting as the game ended 2-2, the first dismissals in a Merseyside derby in 83 years. A spectacular forty-yard own goal by Mick Lyons put us ahead after just nine minutes although Brian Kidd equalised with the last of his six goals against the reds, before Ray Kennedy restored our lead. Andy King levelled the scores for the second time, before the dual sendings off, while Kidd and King also had strikes chalked off for offside. God’s final work 2001 - Robbie Fowler scored a hat-trick in our 4-1 win at Leicester City, his last reds goals in his first spell, with Sami Hyypiä netting the other. Stephen Wright made his first start in this game, with Dennis Wise bagging the last of his four goals past us. 1923 - A less celebrated red made his final appearance when Harry Beadles played his eighteenth game in a 4-2 top-flight defeat of Nottingham Forest at Anfield. Donald McKinlay grabbed two goals past ex-red Sam Hardy, including one from the spot, with Jimmy Walsh also grabbing a brace. Dick Forshaw was playing in his 106th consecutive Liverpool game, but missed the next one as we beat Forest at the City Ground. Duncan Walker scored twice for the visitors. The end of the run 1990 - We failed to win for the first time following a club record twelve consecutive League victories, being held to a 1-1 draw at Norwich City. Gary Gillespie struck our goal after just two minutes, his sixteenth and final reds strike, but Ruel Fox equalised just five minutes later. 1894 - We ended another run by winning our first ever First Division fixture, after nine previous games without a victory. Jimmy Ross bagged a brace in our 2-0 defeat of Stoke at Anfield, with inside-right John Givens playing his tenth and final reds game. 2019 – Adam Lallana scored his 22nd and last goal for the club late on to secure a 1-1 draw at Manchester United and maintain our unbeaten League record that season. Marcus Rashford had given the home side a half-time lead, one of his seven goals past us to date. Facing the Terriers 2018 – Mohamed Salah netted the only goal of our game at Huddersfield Town, his fiftieth strike in English football. 1928 – We lost 3-2 at home to Huddersfield Town in a top-flight encounter. Dick Edmed scored both our goals, with Johnny Dent nabbing a brace for the Terriers, with Clem Stephenson netting the last of his five goals past us. Off the mark 2012 - Raheem Sterling scored his first reds goal, the only one of our League meeting with Reading at Anfield. European stalemates We have played three European Second Round ties on this day in history, failing to score every time. 1971 - We drew at Anfield with Bayern München’s eleven-man defence in the European Cup Winners’ Cup. We lost the return in Germany 3-1 as we were knocked out. 1998 - We drew with Valencia at home in the UEFA Cup, who were managed by future Chelsea boss Claudio Ranieri, with Steve Staunton reaching a century of reds outings. Bizarrely, we had to wear our white away kit due to the visitors’ insistence on wearing orange. However, the second leg in the Mestalla ended 2-2, so we went through on the away goals rule. 1976 - We lost 1-0 in Turkey to Trabzonspor in the European Cup thanks to a dubious penalty award, although neither side managed a shot on target and the reds only won one corner. Boss Bob Paisley described it as “the worst trip I have known in thirteen years”, while Ian Callaghan set a new club record of 79 European appearances. Fortunately, we won the Anfield return 3-0 to progress en route to our first European Cup win. John’s bow 1900 – Left-back John Glover made his reds debut as we lost a top-flight fixture 3-0 at Notts County. In and outs 1967 – Scottish inside-left Gordon Wallace was sold to Crewe Alexandra. He signed professional terms in July 1961 but only made 22 first-team appearances, netting six times, with his most famous game being the first to be screened on the BBC’s Match Of The Day programme, when he grabbed a brace as we beat Arsenal 3-2 at Anfield in August 1964. He had also netted twice on our European debut against Icelandic champions Knattspyrnufélag Reykjavíkur earlier that week. 2005 - Mark González officially signed from Albacete Balompié for £1.5m. However, he had to wait until July 2006 to have his work permit approved. He bagged three goals in 36 reds games but left the club after just a year to join Real Betis Balompié. 2011 – Forward Nathan Eccleston joined Rochdale on loan. He struck once in seven outings for the Dale. European defeat 2009 – The reds lost four games in a row for the first time since April 1987 when we went down 2-1 to Olympique Lyonnais in a Champions League group game at Anfield, with Yossi Benayoun putting us ahead. Young defender Martin Kelly made his first start, impressing before he had to go off injured. Beaten by the Mancs 1913 – We lost a Lancashire Senior Cup Third Round tie 3-1 to Manchester United at Anfield, with Tommy Gracie netting our goal. Management departures 2022 – Steven Gerrard was sacked as Aston Villa boss, having led them to just two victories in twelve League games from the start of the season, and just thirteen wins in forty games in charge overall. 2010 – Managing Director Christian Purslow announced his resignation, five days after the protracted completion of the sale of the club to New England Sports Ventures. On the same day, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Herbie Kane both played for England Under-17’s as they lost their World Championship Finals group game 1-0 in Chile, with ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper in charge, while future red Ibrahima Konaté featured in a European Championships qualifier as France beat Northern Ireland 1-0 in Israel, with Bernard Diomède in charge. Defenders on their way 2000 - Steve Staunton joined Crystal Palace on loan. He has since moved into media work. 1994 - Julian Dicks was sold back to West Ham United for £1m. He had only played 28 times in his one season with the reds, netting three times, and went on to retake his regular place for the Hammers. 2005 - Ex-reds left-back Christian Ziege announced his retirement from football. He had signed for the reds in controversial circumstances from Middlesbrough in August 2000 for £5.5m. He netted twice in 32 reds games, leaving Anfield for Tottenham Hotspur after just one year having won a Worthington Cup winner’s medal. He had then returned to his native land to play for Borussia Mönchengladbach. An epic swindle 2010 – The sale of the club to New England Sports Ventures under the leadership of John W. Henry was completed, after a chaotic few days of court cases. On the same day, Jamie Carragher signed a contract extension tying him to the club until 2013, while future reds Emre Can and Samed Yeşil both played as Germany Under-17’s won a European Championships qualifier 5-0 in Estonia. Michael at the treble 1983 - Michael Robinson netted a hat-trick, his first League goals for the reds, as we won 3-1 at West Ham United, despite Craig Johnston being sent off just after the hour mark. Billy Bonds made his 700th West Ham appearance in this game, as we closed the gap on the second-placed Hammers to two points. Alan Devonshire was on target for the home side with a late consolation. 1955 - We also faced them when Alan A’Court, Jimmy Payne and Billy Liddell all struck as we won a Second Division meeting 3-1 at Anfield. 1906 – Robert Blanthorne bagged a treble as we thumped Rossendale United 6-0 in a Lancashire Senior Cup game at Anfield. Luis in trouble 2011 - We were held to a 1-1 draw by Manchester United when Steven Gerrard put us ahead with a free-kick before Javier Hernández headed in a late equaliser. However, the game will be best remembered for the run-in between Luis Suárez and United skipper Patrice Evra. More reds trebles 2000 - Michael Owen left the pitch with a nasty head wound, with Emile Heskey responding by bagging a classic treble of header, right-foot and left-foot strikes as we won 4-0 at Derby County, with Vegard Heggem playing his 65th and final reds game.
