2,000 up 2004 - We hosted our 2,000th League game, with West Bromwich Albion on the receiving end of a 3-0 defeat. Steve Finnan scored his only reds goal while Luis García bagged the first of his thirty strikes, after Steven Gerrard had opened the scoring. Doss debuts 1981 - Italian left-back Andrea Dossena was born in Lodi. He signed from Udinese for £7m in July 2008 in a four-year deal. He made 31 appearances, saving his two goals for the same week, first at home to Real Madrid and then at Manchester United. He left Anfield to sign for SSC Napoli for €4.25m in January 2010. A nightmare for Carra 1999 - Jamie Carragher scored two own goals to help us to a 3-2 defeat at home to deadly rivals Manchester United, despite goalscorer Andrew Cole’s late sending off, in front of our record home Premier League attendance of 44,929. Sami Hyypiä struck his first reds goal with Patrik Berger also on target for the reds. Cole had struck one of his eleven goals past us. Hat-tricks for 1926 - Gordon Hodgson scored the first of his seventeen reds hat-tricks in our 5-1 First Division defeat of Sheffield United, with Dick Forshaw netting a brace, including a penalty. Harry Johnson struck one of his seven goals against the reds. 1943 - Arthur Shepherd netted an incredible six goals as we trounced Wrexham 8-0 in a Wartime League game at Anfield. Jack Balmer and Alf Hanson were also on target. A unique treble 1982 - We scored against three different Luton Town goalkeepers at Anfield – regular custodian Jake Findlay, right-back Kirk Stephens and Mal Donaghy. Findlay tore a muscle and had to be replaced before the break, with two different outfield players taking a turn between the sticks. Unfortunately, we could only draw 3-3, with Graeme Souness, Ian Rush and Craig Johnston on target. Current Academy Chief Scout Dave Moss was amongst the scorers, with Brian Stein bagging a brace, the first two of his four goals past us. Into the Champions League 2001 - We played our first ever game in the UEFA Champions League proper as we were held 1-1 at Anfield by Boavista, on the day of the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington DC. Michael Owen equalised after Elpidio Silva had put the Portuguese champions ahead, who had seven players booked, while Steven Gerrard played his hundredth reds game. Berry picked 1933 – South African outside-right Berry Nieuwenhuys signed from Germiston Callies. He struck 79 times in 257 reds games, helping us to the League title in 1947 before joining Arsenal later that year. 1963 – Forward John Sealey signed as an amateur from Warrington Town for £25. He scored as he played his only reds game when the full first team was rested before the 1965 FA Cup Final. He moved on to Chester in June 1966. Yet another 2-2 2002 - We were held to a 2-2 draw at Anfield by newly-promoted Birmingham City. This was the first time in 39 years that we had drawn three consecutive League games 2-2. Danny Murphy and Steven Gerrard put us two goals ahead, before City hit back through a pair of late Clinton Morrison goals, two of his four strikes against the reds. Debuting on the flank 1948 - Right-winger Jimmy Payne made his reds bow in our 1-0 home defeat by Bolton Wanderers. He went on to make 243 reds appearances, grabbing 43 goals. Hat-tricks against 1905 - Harry Hampton scored the first of his club-record fourteen hat-tricks for Aston Villa in our 5-0 trouncing at Villa Park to leave us without a point and with a goal difference of -9 after three games. These were the first of his fifteen goals against the reds. However, we still went on to claim the title, becoming the first side to do so having won promotion the previous season. Left-half George Fleming played his 82nd and last reds game as Alf West put through his own net, with Billy Brawn grabbing the other goal. 1946 - Stan Pearson bagged a treble for Manchester United in their 5-0 win at Maine Road to take them to the top of the table, the first three of his eleven past us, although we eventually claimed the title that season. Jack Rowley netted the first of his six goals against the reds, with Charlie Mitten scoring the first of his five. Final strikes 1920 - Left-half Jack Bamber grabbed his second and final reds goal in our 5-2 defeat of Oldham Athletic at Anfield, with winger Jackie Sheldon netting for the twentieth and last time. Dick Johnson nabbed his first two strikes for the club with Harry Chambers also on target while the Latics benefitted from an Elisha Scott own goal, with Arthur Gee also on the scoresheet. Lancashire rivals We have faced Blackburn Rovers and Preston North End twice each on this day in history, winning only once. 1897 - We were held to a goalless draw at Anfield by Preston in a First Division fixture, with forward Pat Finnerhan playing the first of his eight reds games. 1937 - Berry Nieuwenhuys scored in the first minute as we lost 4-1 at Deepdale. Bud Maxwell bagged a treble for the home side, three of his seven strikes against the reds, with Hugh O’Donnell also on target. 1909 - We beat Blackburn in a top-flight match 3-1 at Anfield thanks to first reds goals from outside-left John McDonald and inside-right Jimmy Stewart, and a Jack Parkinson strike. Tom Rogers played his first reds game for more than a year after being seriously injured at Nottingham Forest in October 1908. 1954 - We lost 4-3 at Ewood Park in a Second Division game, with John Evans on target twice for the reds, and Billy Liddell also on the scoresheet. Eddie Quigley bagged a brace for the home side, with Frank Mooney and Tommy Briggs also on target. Disappointment against City We have twice been beaten by Manchester City on this day in history. 1915 - We lost a Wartime League game 1-0. 1935 - We were thumped 6-0 in a First Division match at Maine Road, our worst ever defeat by City with future red Matt Busby among the scorers. Forward Jimmy Heale and outside-right Ernie Toseland each struck twice, with Alex Herd bagging one of his eight goals against the reds. Nicol signs off 1991 - Steve Nicol won his 27th and final Scotland cap as they drew 2-2 with Switzerland at the w***dorf Stadium in Bern. Future red Gary McAllister also played. Also in international action that day were ex-red Jim Magilton and future red Jari Litmanen. First caps 1991 - Dean Saunders netted the only goal of the game while winning his first cap as a reds player as Wales beat Brazil in a friendly in Cardiff, while future reds Assistant Manager Colin Pascoe won his tenth and final cap, with future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel also playing. On the same day, future red Karl-Heinz Riedle was on target in Germany’s 1-0 friendly defeat of England at Wembley. Tottenham Hotspur’s Paul Stewart won his first cap in this game, as a substitute. Meanwhile, John Aldridge won his first cap as a Tranmere Rovers player as the Republic of Ireland won a friendly 2-1 in Hungary, with ex-red Kevin Sheedy notching one of the goals, his final one as a Toffees player. Ray Houghton and future red István Kozma both also featured. 2007 – Future red Andy Carroll struck on his debut for England Under-19’s as they beat Belarus 4-0 in a friendly at Meadow Lane. He was on loan with Preston North End from Newcastle United at the time. Javier Mascherano, Nikolay Mihaylov and future reds Dejan Lovren and James Milner also featured in international action that day. 2018 – Future red Luis Díaz made his senior international bow for Colombia as they shared a goalless draw with Argentina in a friendly in New Jersey. 2024 – Ex-red Liam Millar won his first cap as a Hull City player as Canada shared a goalless friendly draw with Mexico in Texas. Internationals on target 2018 – Ex-red Philippe Coutinho scored as Brazil thumped El Salvador 5-0 in a friendly in Washington. Meanwhile, future red Takumi Minamino netted as Japan beat Costa Rica 3-0 in a friendly in Suita, with Wataru Endō featuring for the first time since joining Koninklijke Sint-Truidense Voetbalvereniging. Ragnar Klavan won his first cap as a Cagliari player as he captained Estonia in their 1-0 defeat in a UEFA Nations League group game in Finland. Future red Fábio Carvalho captained an England Under-17’s managed by ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper as they beat Belgium 6-2 in a friendly in Poland. Also in international action that day were Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kamil Grabara, Jordan Henderson, Ki-Jana Hoever, Xherdan Shaqiri, Dominic Solanke, Neco Williams, Corey Whelan, future reds Thiago Alcântara, Alexander Isak, Diogo Jota and Arthur Melo, and ex-red Péter Gulácsi, with future reds Under-21’s coach managing Wales Under-21’s. 2019 – Coutinho played for Brazil again, alongside Roberto Firmino in their 1-0 friendly defeat by Peru in Los Angeles. On the same day, Academy forward Paul Glatzel signed a new contract with the reds. 2023 – Diogo Jota bagged a brace as Portugal thrashed Luxembourg 9-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Faro. Also in international action were Harvey Elliott and ex-reds Danny Ward, Neco Williams and Harry Wilson, with Rob Page in charge of Wales. Prudhoe starts out 1981 - Future reds loanee keeper Mark Prudhoe signed as a professional for Sunderland. He only made seven first-team appearances for the Wearsiders, before joining Birmingham City three years later. Stevie off 2012 – Captain Steven Gerrard was sent off as Roy Hodgson’s England were held to a 1-1 World Cup qualifying 1-1 draw by Ukraine at Wembley. Ex-red John Arne Riise converted a penalty as Norway beat Slovenia 2-1 in Oslo, while future red Xherdan Shaqiri struck his first goal as a Bayern München player in Switzerland’s 2-0 defeat of Albania in Lucerne. Meanwhile, Jan Mølby and future reds John Barnes, Glenn Hysén and Mark Wright also featured for their countries. 1979 – Ex-red Joey Jones played for Wales as they lost 2-1 to the Republic of Ireland in a friendly in Swansea. Other reds games 1976 – We won 3-2 at Derby County. Ray Kennedy netted before Charlie George scored one of his five goals against the reds and Phil Neal put through his own net to give the Rams a half-time lead. John Toshack and Kevin Keegan scored after the break. 1971 – John Toshack bagged the only goal of Southampton’s visit to Anfield. 1965 – Chris Lawler and Roger Hunt struck as we beat Fulham 2-1 in L4. Out on loan 2010 – Centre-half Daniel Ayala moved away from Anfield to join Hull City on a temporary basis. He struck once in twelve outings for the Tigers. 1997 - Nigel Clough joined Sheffield Wednesday on loan from Manchester City. He only managed two first-team appearances for the Owls. 1995 - Former reserves defender Alex Watson joined Gillingham on loan from Bournemouth. He played ten times for the Gills before returning to Dean Court. 2015 – Centre-half Ben Davies joined Southport on loan from Preston North End, playing nine times for the Sandgrounders. -
Birth of the legend 1913 - Bill Shankly was born in Glenbuck, Ayrshire. He was the ninth of ten children, and the youngest of five boys. Words cannot fully explain his importance to the history of Liverpool Football Club. However, his honours as reds boss between December 1959 and July 1974 included three League titles, two FA Cups, UEFA Cup and the Second Division championship. 1936 - Centre-half John Nicholson was born in Liverpool. He signed as a professional in January 1957 but only made one senior appearance before joining Port Vale in August 1961, playing over 200 games for them. 2001 – Midfielder Jake Cain was born in Wigan. He signed as a professional in September 2019, making his only senior appearance in our FA Cup Fourth Round replay against Shrewsbury Town in February 2020. He moved on to Swindon Town in January 2023. Spurs stuffed 1978 - Tottenham Hotspur suffered their worst ever Anfield defeat, despite including their new World Cup winners, Osvaldo Ardiles and Ricky Villa. Kenny Dalglish and substitute David Johnson both grabbed a brace, added to by Ray Kennedy and a twice-taken Phil Neal penalty, before Terry McDermott rounded off a brilliant team move to make it 7-0. Into the League 1893 - We played our first ever game in the Football League, winning 2-0 at Middlesbrough Ironopolis. Forward Malcolm McVean scored our first ever League goal after an hour, with centre-half Joe McQue nabbing the other. James Henderson played his only senior reds game, while winger Patrick Gordon and forward Jimmy Stott also made their debuts in this game. This was also the first ever League game staged at the Paradise Ground. A busy day 2013 – A whole host of transfers took place on deadline day, with forward Fabio Borini joining Sunderland on loan, while ex-reds left-back Andrea Dossena also signed for the Black Cats on a free transfer from Rafael Benítez’s SSC Napoli. Two centre-halves arrived at Anfield, with Mamadou Sakho arriving from Paris Saint-Germain for £15m and Tiago Ilori signing from Sporting Clube de Portugal for £7m. On the same day, winger Victor Moses arrived on loan from Chelsea with Dani Pacheco leaving the reds to sign for Spanish side AD Alcorcón. Meanwhile, Momo Sissoko had his contract with Paris Saint-Germain terminated. More red ins and outs 1959 – Forward Bobby Murdoch left the reds to join Barrow. He struck seven times in nineteen reds games after signing as a professional in May 1957, as we struggled in the Second Division. 1994 - John Scales signed from Wimbledon for £3.5m. He struck four times in 94 games in his two years at Anfield, before joining Tottenham Hotspur for £2.6m in December 1996. On the same day, Paul Stewart joined Wolverhampton Wanderers on loan. He scored twice in ten appearances for Wolves, and later joined Burnley and Sunderland on loan, having slipped out of the first team picture at Anfield. 2014 - Cameroon-born centre-back Stephen Sama left the reds to sign for VfB Stuttgart having failed to make a senior appearance since arriving from Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund in July 2009. 2015 – The capture of Brazilian midfielder Allan Rodrigues de Souza from Internacional for a reported £500,000 was announced, with his loan departure to Finnish club Seinäjoen Jalkapallokerho also revealed on the same day. He failed to make the break-through at Anfield and is now back in Brazil. 2019 – Winger Ryan Kent was sold to Rangers for £7m after a successful loan spell in which he had struck six times in 43 appearances. On the same day, keeper Shamal George joined Marine on loan and forward Bobby Duncan was sold to Fiorentina for €2m. Meanwhile, Martin Škrtel was released after less than a month with Atalanta and signed for İstanbul Başakşehir on the same day. Meanwhile, future red Jeremie Frimpong signed a four-year deal with Celtic. He netted three times in 51 outings for the Hoops, helping them to claim the domestic treble in his only full season at Parkhead, moving on to Bayer 04 Leverkusen in January 2021. Nice one Cyril 1939 - Cyril Done scored the only goal of the game on his reds debut at home to Chelsea, the day after Germany invaded Poland, and the day before Britain declared war, which resulted in the cancellation of the football season, so he had to wait until October 1946 to make his official reds bow. Full-back Jim Harley was sent off. Out-gunned We have faced Arsenal four times in top-flight matches on this day in history, without securing victory. 1905 - We lost 3-1 at Woolwich Arsenal with Bobby Robinson bagging our consolation, and Sam Raybould missing a penalty in our first game of the season. Jack Parkinson broke his wrist in this match, keeping him out of the side for six months. We finished the game with nine men after Billy Dunlop twisted his knee. Tim Coleman netted the first of his nine goals against the reds, with ex-red CharlIe Satterthwaite and Jimmy Blair also on the scoresheet. 1911 - We returned to the Manor Ground for another season opener, when John McConnell scored his only reds goal with Samual Gilligan also netting as we left with a 2-2 draw. 1922 - We lost 1-0 to Arsenal at Highbury, thanks to an Arthur Hutchins penalty. 2012 – Loanee Nuri Şahin made his reds bow as the Gunners comfortably won 2-0 at Anfield, with Lukas Podolski and Santi Cazorla bagging the goals. Beating the Trotters We have entertained Bolton Wanderers three times on this day in history, winning twice and drawing on the other occasion. 1914 - Billy Lacey, Arthur Metcalf, Jimmy Nicholl and Jackie Sheldon all struck as we won our opening First Division fixture 4-3. Red centurions 1950 - Jack Balmer struck his hundredth reds goal as we drew 1-1 at Aston Villa. 1925 – Matt McQueen reached a century of League games in charge as we beat Notts County 2-0 at Anfield. Billy Flint put through his own net, with Dick Forshaw also scoring inside the opening half hour. Debutants on the mark 1899 – Inside-forward John ‘Sailor’ Hunter scored on his reds bow, as we lost 3-2 at Stoke in our season opener, with skipper Alex Raisbeck also on target and forward Peter Kyle also making his reds bow. Billy Maxwell bagged two of his six goals against the reds, with Jack Kennedy also scoring. 1907 - Charlie Hewitt also netted on his debut, as we started another season with a 3-1 defeat at Nottingham Forest. Double debutants 1972 - Keeper Frank Lane played the first of his two senior reds games, unfortunately conceding an own goal, often attributed to Alan Hinton, as we lost 2-1 at League champions Derby County, despite John Toshack putting us in front. Midfielder Peter Cormack also made his reds bow in this match. John O’Hare scored the last of his six goals past us for the home side. Ged’s double century 2002 - We were held at home by Newcastle United to a 2-2 draw in the 200th match since Gérard Houllier took sole charge. Ex-United player Dietmar Hamann struck before Michael Owen converted a penalty. However, late goals from Gary Speed and one of Alan Shearer’s eight past us levelled the match. 1953 - We also faced the Geordies, leaving St. James’ Park on the wrong end of a 4-0 scoreline, with the legendary Jackie Milburn and Vic Keeble adding to the last two of Robert Mitchell’s eight strikes against the reds. Syd’s last 1936 – We were trounced 6-2 at Portsmouth with Alf Hanson and Berry Nieuwenhuys netting our goals as inside-left Syd Roberts played his 62nd and final reds game. Fred Worrall scored one of his four goals against the reds, Jack Weddle struck the last of his five, Cliff Parker bagged two of his five and Billy Bagley also scored twice. Starting out with a point 1901 - We kicked off our season with a goalless draw at Small Heath, who were later to become known as Birmingham City. Craig Bellamy was sent off while winning his first cap as a Coventry City player as Wales lost 2-1 in Belarus. Robbie Keane won his first cap as an LA Galaxy player as the Republic of Ireland shared a goalless draw with Slovakia in Dublin, with Yossi Benayoun playing for Israel for the first time while on loan at Arsenal in their 1-0 defeat by Greece in Tel-Aviv. Alou Diarra won his first cap as an Olympique de Marseille player as France won 2-1 in Albania. Trebles all round 1967 - Tony Hateley scored a hat-trick, his first reds goals that included a penalty, in our 6-0 thumping of Newcastle United. Gordon Milne’s penalty was saved by Gary Sprake but Milne reacted quickly and scored from the rebound. On the move 2022 - Alexander Isak joined Newcastle United from Real Sociedad for a reported £63m, a club record for both parties. He struck 62 times in 109 games as he helped them to claim the League Cup before signing for the reds for a British record £120m in September 2025. 2021 – Midfielder Bobby Clark joined the reds from Newcastle United, signing pro terms the following February. Morgo off the mark 2012 – Centre-forward Adam Morgan made his reds bow as Andy Webster put through his own net to hand us a 1-0 victory in our UEFA Europa League Play-off first leg at Heart Of Midlothian, with Charlie Adam playing his 37th and last reds game and Jay Spearing making his 55th and final appearance for the club. Last gasp victory 2008 – We came from behind after Mido’s goal to beat Middlesbrough 2-1 in our first home game of the season thanks to a late equaliser from Jamie Carragher that was later ruled to be an Emanuel Pogatetz own goal by the Premier League’s dubious goals panel. Steven Gerrard then handed us all three points in stoppage time. Tons up 1997 – Steve Harkness played his hundredth reds game as we drew 1-1 at Blackburn Rovers. Clarets fight-back 1969 - We took a two-goal lead over Burnley thanks to a Tommy Smith penalty and Bobby Graham header. He signed from Leith Athletic for £100 in June 1895 and was the first red to be capped by Scotland, top scoring as we claimed the Second Division title in 1896, and again the following season. Tosh’s bow 1901 – Forward Tosh Johnson was born in Dalton-in-Furness, Lancashire. He crossed the park in March 1934, having claimed the First and Second Division titles and FA Cup with the Blues, and netted eight times in 38 reds games before joining Darwen in August 1936. Steve’s farewell 1980 – Keeper Steve Ogrizovic played his fifth and last reds game in our goalless draw at Coventry City. He later made a club record 601 appearances for the Sky Blues. Firsts and lasts against the Blades 2006 - Jan Kromkamp played his eighteenth and final reds game as a Robbie Fowler penalty rescued a point at Sheffield United in our opening League match of the season. This brought our fourteen-game winning streak to an end. Jamie Carragher and John Arne Riise both had to go off injured at Bramall Lane. 1992 - We recorded our first win in the newly-renamed FA Premier League by beating Sheffield United 2-1 at Anfield, with goals from Mark Walters and Paul Stewart’s first reds strike after Brian Deane had given the visitors the lead with one of his eight goals against us. This was also Ged Poynton’s first match in charge of the stadium and operations. A rare strike 1978 - Kenny Dalglish opened the scoring before Queens Park Rangers’ Paul McGee scored one of only four opposition goals in the League at Anfield that season, although we still won the game 2-1, with Steve Heighway netting late on. Left-back Alan Kennedy made his reds bow while Emlyn Hughes and Ray Clemence had paraded the European Cup prior to kick off, with Bob Paisley being presented with his Manager of the Month award for the previous April. Signing on 1894 – Inside-right Jimmy Ross signed from Preston North End for a club record £75. He had won the League twice with their ‘invincibles’ side, scoring 39 times in 85 reds games as well as becoming club captain. He left for Burnley in March 1897, sadly dying in June 1902 aged just 36. 1983 - Centre-back Mark Seagraves signed for the reds as a professional. He only made two senior appearances before joining Manchester City in September 1987. 2001 – Northern Irish keeper Liam Hughes was born in Craigavon. He joined the reds from Celtic in January 2021, making it to the first-team bench on two occasions before being released at the end of the 2022/23 season. 2022 – Academy Director Alex Inglethorpe signed a new contract. He had been heading the Academy up since 2014, having been promoted from Reserve Team Head Coach. Off on loan 2019 – Ex-reds midfielder Philippe Coutinho joined Bayern München on loan from Barcelona, for a loan fee of €8.5m. He struck nine times in 34 outings for the Bavarians. 2018 – Midfielder Marko Grujić signed a new contract, joining Hertha BSC Berlin on loan on the same day, netting nine times in 54 games in two seasons there. 2004 - El-Hadji Diouf joined Bolton Wanderers on loan after six goals in eighty reds games following his £10m signing from Racing Club de Lens in June 2002. He bagged nine goals in 32 games while on loan at the Reebok Stadium, before signing permanently for the Trotters in June 2005. Red legends on the move again 1982 - Kevin Keegan joined Second Division Newcastle United from Southampton for £100,000, after just two years at The Dell. He had struck 42 times in eighty games for the Saints. 1998 - Bruce Grobbelaar signed for Chesham United from Oldham Athletic on a free transfer. He stayed there for less than three weeks, before joining First Division Bury. An unlucky break 1972 - Ex-reds left-back Peter Wall broke his leg while playing for Crystal Palace as they held us to a 1-1 draw at Selhurst Park. Emlyn Hughes grabbed our equaliser while Ray Clemence played his hundredth League game for the reds. Other opening games 1950 - We started our top-flight campaign with a 2-0 defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers, going on to end the season in ninth place. Roy Swinbourne netted one of his five goals past us, with Billy Crook also scoring. 1953 - We beat Portsmouth 3-1 at Anfield in another season opener, with Bill Jones netting twice and Billy Liddell also on the scoresheet. Unfortunately, this was our only win in the first nine games of the season and we were relegated at the end of that season, having finished rock bottom of the table. Beating the blues at Anfield 1944 - Cyril Done scored four goals as we thumped the Blues 5-2 in a friendly, with Malam also on target. 1939 - We beat Everton 2-1 in another friendly, with Harold Taylor and Jack Balmer on the scoresheet. The game was played in aid of the Jubilee Fund. A divine apology 2001 - Robbie Fowler finally apologised after his training ground bust-up with Phil Thompson, having sat out the FA Charity Shield and the home League win over West Ham United. Pennant off 2003 - Future red Jermaine Pennant was dismissed for England Under-21’s as they lost 3-0 to Croatia in a friendly at Upton Park, with Glen Johnson winning his third cap, and first since moving to Chelsea, and future red Paul Konchesky also playing. Olympian feats 2008 – Javier Mascherano’s Argentina beat Brazil 3-0 in the Semi-final of the Olympics Finals in Beijing, with Lucas one of two Brazilians dismissed. On the same day, Krisztián Németh played as Hungary Under-21’s thumped San Marino 5-0 in a European Championships qualifier. 1987 - The reds beat an Irish Olympic XI 5-0 at Lansdowne Road in Dublin, with our goals coming from a Paul Walsh brace, Peter Beardsley, Ronnie Whelan and a John Aldridge penalty. Nigel Spackman played at right-back. First strikes 1997 – John Arne Riise bagged his first two goals for Norway Under-16’s as they beat Sweden 5-4 in a friendly. On the same day, fellow future red Vegard Heggem played for the Under-21’s in their goalless European Championships qualifier in Finland. Meanwhile, Gareth Roberts and future red Craig Bellmay both played for Wales Under-21’s as they lost a qualifier 3-0 in Turkey. First and last caps 2008 – James Milner won his last cap for England Under-21’s while with Newcastle United in their 2-1 friendly defeat of Slovenia in Hull. 2003 - Steve Finnan won his 23rd cap, and first as a red, as the Republic of Ireland beat Australia 2-1 in a friendly at Lansdowne Road, with future red Robbie Keane also playing. 1998 - Vegard Heggem won his second cap, and first as a red, in Norway’s goalless draw with Romania in Oslo. His team-mates included fellow reds Stig Inge Bjørnebye and Øyvind Leonhardsen. Meanwhile, Abel Xavier won his first cap while with PSV Eindhoven, and sixth to date, as Portugal beat Mozambique 2-1 in another friendly in the Azores. Also in friendly action that day were future reds Sami Hyypiä, Jari Litmanen and Vladimír Šmicer. New contracts 2009 – Hungarian reserves Péter Gulácsi and Krisztián Németh signed new contracts to keep them at Anfield until 2013 and 2012, respectively. Both have since left the club, while keeper Gulácsi making it as far as the bench on 51 occasions. 2008 – Former Academy coach Iain Brunskill was appointed Reserve Team Manager of Blackburn Rovers under Paul Ince. He is now working for the Chinese FA. Another game 1975 – West Ham United held us to a 2-2 draw at Anfield, with Ian Callaghan and John Toshack netting. Diogo Jota opened the scoring after the break before Mohamed Salah netted his ninth opening day goal, a Premier League record. European debut 1964 - We made our first appearance in European competition in the preliminary round of the European Cup. We won 5-0 at Icelandic champions Knattspyrnufélag Reykjavíkur, with Gordon Wallace and Roger Hunt both netting braces and Phil Chisnall grabbing his first reds goal. Bruce makes his bow 1981 - Bruce Grobbelaar made his first reds appearance in our 3-0 win at Zürich. Kenny Dalglish and Ray Kennedy netted, with Phil Neal converting a penalty. The game was due to be played the day before, but torrential rain had made the pitch unplayable. Management debuts 1947 – Former reds boss Roy Hodgson was born in Croydon. He arrived from Fulham in July 2010, only leading us to thirteen victories in his 31 games matches in charge, leaving “by mutual consent” six months later. 2010 – Ex-reds midfielder Kevin MacDonald was appointed Caretaker Manager of Aston Villa after Martin O’Neill’s sudden departure. Fabio starts out 2012 - Fabio Borini struck his first reds goal as we beat Belarusian side Gomel 3-0 in our UEFA Europa League Third Qualifying Round second leg encounter at Anfield. Steven Gerrard scored his 150th goal for the club, with Glen Johnson also netting. Multiple debutants 2015 – Centre-forward Christian Benteke, right-back Nathaniel Clyne, forward Roberto Firmino, defender Joe Gomez and midfielder James Milner all made their reds bows as a late Philippe Coutinho strike earned us a 1-0 victory at Stoke City in the opening game of the season, just eleven weeks after our 6-1 humiliation at the same venue. 1997 – Paul Ince and Danny Murphy made their first-class reds debuts in our 1-1 draw with Wimbledon at Selhurst Park. He had graduated to Melwood in the summer of 2007 after captaining the reds as they retained the FA Youth Cup that May. He made 55 senior reds appearances without finding the back of the net. 2018 – Danny Ings joined Southampton on loan for the season, making the move permanent for an initial £18m fee in July 2019. He had only struck four times in 25 games since signing from Burnley in July 2015 as he suffered two serious injuries. Backing Michael 2005 - Rafael Benítez backed Michael Shields, ahead of our game against CSKA Sofia in Bulgaria, saying, “We support Michael Shields’ family and we also support the family of Martin Georgiev. Testimonials 1996 - Our most recent testimonial fixture on this day was held in honour of Jan Mølby in front of a crowd of just 8,316. PSV Eindhoven provided the opposition, leaving Anfield having won 3-2 with Mølby playing just under an hour. Stan Collymore was on target with Stig Inge Bjørnebye also heading a goal after we had gone three goals behind, while the eventual winning goal came from second half substitute Bolo Zenden. Robbie Fowler had to be substituted on the referee’s advice after an ugly confrontation with PSV’s Bjorn van der Doelen. 1993 - A testimonial for Ronnie Whelan was played at Anfield with Newcastle United providing the opposition. Neil Ruddock scored the only goal of the game, his first for the reds. He also broke ex-red Peter Beardsley’s cheekbone in a collision. 1987 - We travelled north of the border to face Celtic in a match in aid of their legendary player Tommy Burns, with the reds running out 1-0 winners thanks to a goal from Ronnie Whelan. Chelsea at Anfield 1969 - We kicked off our season with a 4-1 defeat of Chelsea at Anfield in what was Bill Shankly’s 400th League game in charge of the reds. Ian St. John bagged a brace, with our other goals being scored by Chris Lawler and Geoff Strong. A right Charlie 2007 - Keeper Charles Itandje signed from Racing Club de Lens. He made seven appearances in the cups in his first season, but failed to impress, conceding ten goals and only keeping one clean sheet, eventually departing for Greek side P.A.E. A.P.S. Atromitos Athens in January 2011. Red strikers going free 1979 - A young Peter Beardsley signed for Carlisle United having been released by Newcastle United. He scored 29 times in 126 appearances for the Cumbrians before being sold to Vancouver Whitecaps in April 1982 for £275,000. 2002 - Former reserves forward Paul Dalglish joined Blackpool from Norwich City on a free transfer. He could only score twice in thirty games for the Seasiders, before moving on again, this time to Linfield. Happy birthdays 1884 – Full-back Sam Speakman was born in Huyton. Avi Cohen played his first reds game since joining the club, although he had appeared for both sides in a friendly against Israel two months before signing on. 1994 - Robbie Fowler grabbed all the goals as we beat Hertha BSC Berlin 3-0. 1995 - Steve McManaman scored a hat-trick in a benefit match against a Yeovil Town/Nick Tanner XI at Huish Park, in aid of our ex-defender. We ran out 7-1 winners, with Jamie Redknapp, Nigel Clough and Stig Inge Bjørnebye also hitting the target, to add to a Robbie Fowler penalty. Amsterdam tournament 1977 - David Johnson grabbed the only goal of the game as we beat Barcelona in the third-place play-off of the Amsterdam Tournament at the Olympisch Stadion. 1976 - We also visited the Netherlands, with Terry McDermott netting as we drew with Roda JC. 1983 - We returned to the country again, when Mark Lawrenson bagged a brace, with Kenny Dalglish also on target as we drew the third-place play-off of the Rotterdam AD Toernooi 3-3 with Feyenoord, before losing a penalty shoot-out 4-1. Olympian reds 2008 – Ryan Babel, Lucas Leiva and Javier Mascherano all represented their countries in Olympics Finals group games in China. Razor tips the scales 2002 - Ex-red Neil Ruddock was transfer-listed by Second Division Swindon Town for being overweight! Also on the move 1985 - Future reds forward Dean Saunders joined Brighton & Hove Albion from Swansea City on a free transfer. He struck 26 times in 86 games while at the Goldstone Ground, before being sold to Oxford United for £60,000 in March 1987. 2013 – Future reds coach Gary O’Neil signed for Queens Park Rangers, netting once in 33 appearances as he helped them get promoted to the Premier League in his only campaign at Loftus Road. Tosh the boss 2011 - John Toshack was appointed Manager of FYR Macedonia. He led them to just one victory in their final four qualifiers for Euro 2012 as they finished fifth in their six-team group, ahead of Andorra only. More loan moves 1998 - Peter Beardsley re-joined Fulham on loan from Bolton Wanderers, having already had a temporary spell at Craven Cottage at the end of the previous season. Happy birthday Clem 1948 - Ray Clemence was born in Skegness. He arrived from Sc***horpe United for £18,000 in June 1967, usurping Tommy Lawrence as first choice number one after two years. He went on to make 665 reds appearances, winning five League titles, an FA Cup, three European Cups, two UEFA Cups, a League Cup, UEFA Super Cup and four FA Charity Shields, before moving on to Tottenham Hotspur in August 1981. Adiós Xabi 2009 - Xabi Alonso moved to Real Madrid for a club record £30m, after helping us to claim the European Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup and FA Community Shield. He had arrived from Real Sociedad for £10.7m in August 2004, bagging nineteen goals in 210 reds games, including two strikes from inside his own half. Striking out 1991 - Peter Beardsley was sold to Everton for £1m. He had arrived from Newcastle United for a British record £1.9m fee four years before. Keep changing 2019 – Simon Mignolet was sold to Club Brugge for an initial reported £6.4m, with ex-Hammers stopper Adrián signing as his replacement, so far making eighteen senior appearances, making a crucial stop in the shoot-out as we claimed the UEFA Super Cup as well as helping us to claim the Premier League title. Mignolet had signed from Sunderland for £9m in June 2013, keeping 65 clean sheets in 204 senior outings, making a string of top-class saves as we finished second in the League in his first campaign. He netted four times in fifteen Conference games for them, before being released at the end of the season. Olympian despair 2012 – Craig Bellamy captained a Great Britain side that also included future reds Joe Allen, Steven Caulker and Daniel Sturridge as they drew 1-1 with South Korea in the Quarter-final of the Olympics Finals in Cardiff. South Korea won 5-4 on penalties with Sturridge having his penalty saved. On the same day, future red Sadio Mané played as Senegal lost 4-2 to Mexico after extra time at Wembley, with fellow future red Mohamed Salah also crashing out as Egypt lost 3-0 to Japan at Old Trafford. Internationals on target 2016 – Takumi Minamino netted as Japan lost 5-4 to Nigeria in a Olympic Finals group game in Brazil, with fellow future red Wataru Endō skippering the side. Take a walk around him 1961 - Bill Shankly signed Ron Yeats from Dundee United for £22,000. He was the rock at the centre of our defence for 454 games across a decade, netting sixteen times as he helped us to our first ever FA Cup, two League titles, a Second Division championship and the FA Charity Shield. He then moved into management with Tranmere Rovers, but returned to Anfield in 1986, spending the next sixteen years as Chief Scout. Christian arrival 2015 – Centre-forward Christian Benteke signed from Aston Villa for £32.5m, bagging ten goals in 42 outings and featuring in the UEFA Europa League Final in Basel. Sander back in England 2005 - Sander Westerveld joined Portsmouth on a free transfer from Real Sociedad. On the same day, ex-reds loanee Arthur Melo joined Fiorentina on loan from Juventus, scoring twice in 48 games as they reached the UEFA Conference League Final. Mannix banned 2009 – Ex-reds reserves midfielder David Mannix was banned for ten months and fined £4,000 for breaching the FA’s betting rules. He was convicted of having bet approximately £4,000 on Accrington Stanley losing against Bury in May 2008. Happy birthdays 1938 - Legendary centre-forward ‘Sir’ Roger Hunt was born in Golborne, Lancashire. He netted 285 times in 492 reds games after signing from Stockton Heath in July 1958. His 245 League goals remain a club record, and he has the distinction of being the first red to win the World Cup while at Anfield. His club medal haul includes two League championships, FA Cup, Second Division title and FA Charity Shield. 1966 - Hunt bagged both goals as England beat France 2-0 in a World Cup Finals group game at Wembley, on his 28th birthday. Clubmate Ian Callaghan also played, winning only his second cap. 1948 - Reserves keeper Frank Lane was born in Wallasey. He signed from Tranmere Rovers for £15,000 in September 1971, but only made two first-team appearances, deputising for Ray Clemence. Unfortunately, he distinguished himself for all the wrong reasons on his debut in September 1972 by safely catching a deep cross from Derby County’s Alan Hinton and then stepping backwards over his own goal-line, to help us on our way to a 2-1 defeat. New signings 2005 - Peter Crouch signed from Southampton for £7m on a four-year contract. He failed to score in his first nineteen reds games, but went on to bag thirteen goals in his final thirty games of his first season, helping us to claim the FA Cup in May. He went on to score 42 times in 134 outings in total before being sold to Portsmouth for a fee of up to £11m in July 2008. 2016 – Estonian centre-half Ragnar Klavan signed from Augsburg for £4.2m. The Liverpool-born lad had been at the Academy since the age of seven, making it onto the first-team bench for the first time in our League Cup Quarter-final at Aston Villa in December 2019. He became the first player to switch directly from Everton to Liverpool since Dave Hickson in November 1959. Barmby netted eight times in 58 reds games, moving on to Leeds United for £2.75m in August 2002. Red departures 2017 – Brazilian midfielder Lucas Leiva was sold to S.S. Lazio for £5m. He made 346 senior appearances after signing from Grêmio for a reported £5m in May 2007, notching just seven times. 1992 - Barry Venison was sold to Newcastle United for £250,000. He had struck three times in 158 appearances for the reds since arriving from Sunderland for £200,000 in August 1986, winning two League titles and an FA Cup in his time at Anfield. 2008 – Keeper Scott Carson was sold to West Bromwich Albion for £3.25m, after seasons on loan at first Charlton Athletic and then Aston Villa. Happy birthday Ray 1922 - Welsh international full-back Ray Lambert was born in Bagillt, Flintshire. He joined the reds when he was just thirteen and went on to make 341 first-team appearances, netting just twice, including being part of the 1947 title-winning side. Other birthdays 1905 - Outside-right Billy Hartill was born. He only made four senior appearances in early 1936, after signing from Everton that January, moving on to Bristol Rovers just two months later. He had previously been a prolific marksman with hometown club Wolverhampton Wanderers, bagging 164 goals in 221 League games. 1895 - Mid-1920’s reserves full-back James Garner was born in Manchester. He only played five times for the reds and went on to make 26 League appearances for Southport. Writing history 2002 - It was announced that a new weekly magazine called LFC would be launched the following month, the first official weekly magazine dedicated to a single Premiership club. Rick Parry said, “We feel our fans are ready for the new weekly ‘LFC’ magazine which will give them a real insight into life at Anfield and Melwood.” It was eventually replaced by a monthly publication after 513 issues. Youngsters on their way out 2006 - French centre-back Carl Medjani signed for Lorient permanently, having previously spent a season on loan there. He made only nine League appearances to add to the 25 from his first spell at Stade Le Moustoir, before joining AJ Ajaccio. 2011 – Argentine midfielder Gerardo Bruna was sold to Blackpool, having helped the reserves to claim the League at the end of his first season in 2008. Also in international action 1925 - Reds forward James Walsh played for an England side as they beat Australia 5-0 in an FA Tour game in Sydney. 1995 – Future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel appeared for Brazil as they drew 2-2 with Argentina in the Copa América Quarter-final in Uruguay, before winning a penalty shoot-out. -
Happy birthdays 1946 - Midfielder Peter Cormack was born in Edinburgh. He signed from Nottingham Forest for a club record £110,000 in July 1972 and won League title and UEFA Cup winners’ medals in his first season. He scored 26 times in his 178 reds appearances before moving on to Bristol City in November 1976 for £50,000. 1922 - Left-winger Peter Kippax was born in Burnley. He left his hometown club to join the reds as an amateur in 1948, having helped Great Britain to fourth place in the Olympics football competition that summer. He made one League outing, against Birmingham City in March 1949, having already netted in a Wartime League fixture for the reds against Bolton Wanderers in August 1945, before moving on to Preston North End in 1950. 1928 - Post-war red Joe Shepherd was born. He never played a senior game for us. His two brothers, centre-forward Arthur and full-back Bill, were also Liverpool players at around the same time. Hark! It’s Harkness 1989 - Steve Harkness signed from Carlisle United for £75,000. He went on to make 139 appearances for the reds, bagging three goals before being sold to SL Benfica by Gérard Houllier for ten times his purchase price in March 1999. Andriy off the mark 2007 - Andriy Voronin scored his first two reds goals as we beat SV Werder Bremen 3-2 in a friendly in Switzerland. Ryan Babel, Yossi Benayoun and Fernando Torres all played their first games for the club. John Arne Riise was also on target with a 25-yard strike. Heading off 2007 - Mark González was sold to Real Betis Balompié for £4.2m. The Chilean international winger was actually born in Durban, South Africa. He struck three times in 36 games after signing from Albacete Balompié for £1.5m in October 2005, although work permit problems delayed his arrival until the following summer. 2001 - Christian Ziege was sold to Tottenham Hotspur for £4m, only a year after his acrimonious transfer from Middlesbrough. He had notched twice in 32 appearances whilst at Anfield, including coming off the bench in Cardiff for the first leg of the treble. Milly off the mark 2015 – James Milner struck his first goal for the club as we beat Brisbane Roar 2-1 at their Suncorp Stadium, with winger Ryan Kent making his first senior appearance. Adam Lallana scored our other goal. 2016 – Danny Ings and Ben Woodburn netted as we won 2-0 at Wigan Athletic’s DW Stadium in a pre-season friendly. Double departure 1999 - Rob Jones signed for West Ham United on a non-contract basis. He had famously failed to score in his 243 reds appearances, but persistent back problems led to his departure from Anfield. He was unable to achieve full fitness while with the Hammers and subsequently retired from the game. On the very same day, second string keeper Tony Warner joined Millwall on a free transfer, after nearly a decade at Anfield without making a first team appearance. He joined Cardiff City from the Lions in July 2004 after 225 games for Millwall. 2017 - Keeper Ryan Fulton signed for Hamilton Academical, playing seven senior games in his first campaign with the Accies. Backroom changes 2007 - Ian Ayre was appointed as our new Commercial Director, although he would not actually take up the role for another month. He had previously been Chief Executive of Total Sports Asia, a brand solutions company advising international companies on rolling out Asian sports and entertainment campaigns, having also been Chief Executive and Chairman of Huddersfield Town. He said, “Being Liverpool born and bred, this is a dream job for me”. Ayre became the club’s CEO in May 2014, moving on from the reds when his contract expired three years later. 2002 - Hughie McAuley was confirmed as our new reserve team manager, leaving his position as the club’s Under-19’s boss. Academy Director Steve Heighway said, “Hughie is going down to Melwood to coach, but he will have a wide range of responsibilities and provide continuity between the Academy and Melwood. We are delighted for Hughie as he has been with us for a long time.” Leo the first 1997 - We lost 1-0 to IFK Göteborg in our first pre-season friendly, with Øyvind Leonhardsen making his debut appearance in a red shirt. On the move again 2018 – Winger Harry Wilson joined Derby County on loan, netting eighteen times in 49 outings as the Rams just missed out on promotion. On the same day, young forwards Taiwo Awoniyi and Rhian Brewster both signed new contracts, while ex-reds full-back Ryan McLaughlin joined Blackpool from Oldham Athletic after three goals in 62 games for the Latics. 2006 - Ex-reds reserves striker John Durnin was appointed to the coaching staff at Conference outfit Southport. He only stayed in the role for less than three months. 2003 - Ex-reserves forward Paul Dalglish joined Northern Irish side Linfield from Blackpool on a free transfer. He remained there less than six months, before moving to Modena in Italy. 2007 - Centre-half Dejan Lovren joined Inter Zaprešić on loan from Dinamo Zagreb, scoring once in 56 games across two seasons. On the same day, midfielder Simon Wiles re-joined Macclesfield Town on loan from Blackpool, playing twenty times in this second spell with the Silkmen. He took over as the reds’ Under-18’s Head Coach in August 2025. 2012 – Future keeper Andy Lonergan joined Bolton Wanderers from Leeds United, where he was competing with Ádám Bogdán for the number one spot. He played 62 times before moving to Fulham in June 2015. 2023 – Left-back Yasser Larouci joined Sheffield United on loan from Troyes, making thirteen senior outings as the Blades finished bottom of the Premier League. On the same day, centre-half Ragnar Klavan signed as a player for Tallinna Kalev, having been their President since 2016. He played fourteen times in his first season there. Youngsters in Euro action 2000 - Future red Milan Baroš won his sixteenth cap for the Czech Republic Under-18’s as they drew 1-1 with Russia in a European Championship Finals group game in Augsburg. 2008 – Future reds Victor Moses and Daniel Sturridge featured in England’s goalless draw in the Under-19’s European Championships in the Czech Republic. On the same day, Péter Gulácsi, Krisztián Németh and András Simon all played for Hungary as they beat Spain 1-0 in the same competition. 2018 – Adam Lewis played for England Under-19’s in their 3-2 defeat of Turkey in a European Championships Finals group game in Finland. On the same day, Bernard Diomède took charge of France Under-19’s as they lost 2-1 to Ukraine in a European Championships Finals group game in Finland. World Cup win 1994 - Thiago Alcântara's father Mazinho played for Brazil in the World Cup Final in California. The game ended goalless after extra time, with the Brazilians beating Italy 3-2 on penalties. Future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel saved one of the shoot-out spot-kicks. 1991 – Taffarel also represented his country as Brazil lost 3-2 to Argentina in a Copa América final round game in Chile. 1988 – Taffarel again played for Brazil, this time helping them to a 2-0 win over the host nation in the Australia Bicentenary Gold Cup Final in Sydney. Signing on 2024 - John Heitinga was appointed as Assistant Coach under Arne Slot. He helped us to claim the League title in his only season at Anfield. 2020 – Midfielder Jake Cain signed a new contract with the reds. He had made his senior debut the preceding February in our FA Cup Fourth Round replay win over Shrewsbury Town at Anfield. He moved on to Swindon Town in January 2023. 2021 – Polish keeper Fabian Mrozek signed pro terms, having joined the Academy the previous August. On the same day, future red Wataru Endō played for Japan Under-23’s in their 1-1 draw with Spain in Kobe.
