Death of a legend 2001 - Legendary forward Billy Liddell died in Liverpool of Alzheimer’s disease. He joined the reds in July 1938 while still only sixteen, and left the club 23 years later, having struck 228 times in 534 games. His only club honour was the League title in 1947, although he also played in the FA Cup Final three years later. 1984 – Scottish left-half Jimmy McDougall died in Allerton. He signed from Partick Thistle in April 1928 and went on to be nominated into the club’s official Hall of Fame for the 1930’s, having struck twelve times in 356 games for the reds. He moved on to South Liverpool in May 1938 and later set up a successful chandlery business in Liverpool. Moving out 2007 - Luis García re-signed for Club Atlético de Madrid for around £4m after thirty strikes, including five in our glorious Champions League campaign in 2005, in 121 games. He had also helped us to claim the UEFA Super Cup and FA Community Shield. On the same day, keeper Nikolay Mihaylov signed from Levski Sofia. However, he was sold to Twente in the Netherlands for €1.8m in February 2010 after a loan spell, as work permit problems meant he was unable to feature for the reds. 2013 – Jonjo Shelvey left for Swansea City for an initial £5m fee, after seven strikes in 69 reds outings since signing from Charlton Athletic for £1.7m in May 2010. On the same day, ex-reds forward Djibril Cissé signed for Russian side Kuban Krasnodar, having been released by Queens Park Rangers five days earlier. 1962 – Scottish keeper Bert Slater was sold to Dundee who were under the management of his brother Bob. He arrived from Falkirk in a swap deal for Tommy Younger in June 1959 and played 111 times, winning a Second Division title medal in 1962. 1931 – Forward Bob Clark left the reds for Nottingham Forest after eleven goals in 42 outings. He had signed from Newcastle United for £3,000 in January 1928, having helped them to the League title the year before. 2021 – Polish reserves keeper Kamil Grabara left the club for Danish side F.C. København, playing 126 times in his first three seasons. 2023 – Left-back Owen Beck joined Dundee on loan, netting twice in 28 outings before being recalled to Anfield the following January. Can he? 2014 – Midfielder Emre Can signed from Bayer 04 Leverkusen for £9.75m. He struck fourteen times in 167 outings, moving on to Juventus in June 2018 after his contract expired. Defensive signings 2008 – Right-back Philipp Degen signed on a free transfer from Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund on a four-year deal. Injuries restricted him to just thirteen largely unconvincing senior outings. 1894 – Scottish keeper Harry McNaughton signed from St. Bernard’s. He only made one senior appearance, keeping a clean sheet in the Anfield derby in the October of that year. Warnock sent to Coventry 2003 - Stephen Warnock joined Coventry City on loan. He struck three times in 49 games for the Sky Blues as they finished twelfth in the First Division, becoming their Player of the Year. He finally made the break-through at Anfield under Rafael Benítez, but only bagged one goal in 67 reds games before leaving for Blackburn Rovers in January 2007. On the same day, ex-reserves forward Jon Newby joined Huddersfield Town on a free transfer from Bury. He failed to find the net in fifteen games for the Terriers. 2004 - Bruno Cheyrou joined Olympique de Marseille on loan. He had struck five times in 48 games in his one year at Anfield and bagged one goal in nineteen League games for the Mediterranean outfit. The King returns 2009 - Kenny Dalglish was appointed to a role with the Academy and as a Club Ambassador. International firsts 1977 - Bruce Grobbelaar won his only senior international cap for Rhodesia before the country’s name change to Zimbabwe. They were held to a 1-1 draw by South Africa in a friendly in Salisbury. 2003 – Future red Ragnar Klavan made his senior bow as Estonia were thumped 5-1 by Lithuania in a friendly in Valga. 2021 – Jordan Henderson struck his first goal for England in their 4-0 defeat of Ukraine in their European Championships Quarter-final in Rome, with ex-red Raheem Sterling also featuring. Meanwhile, ex-red Luis Suárez scored in the shoot-out as Uruguay beat Colombia 4-2 after their Copa América Quarter-final had ended goalless in Brasilia, with future red Luis Díaz on the losing side. Happy birthday Doc 1958 – Former club doctor Mark Waller was born in Northampton. A reds fan since moving to Liverpool in 1977, he was in this role from 1993 until June 2010. 1926 - Keeper Charlie Ashcroft was born in Chorley. He signed for the reds in December 1943 and appeared 89 times before joining Ipswich Town in June 1955. Coaching changes 2011 – The appointment of Kevin Keen as First Team Coach was announced. Meanwhile, Iván Ortega left the reds to join Chelsea as Sports Therapist. Keen left the club in June 2012 after Kenny Dalglish’s sacking. 2012 - Keen joined West Bromwich Albion as Joint-Assistant Head Coach, working under Steve Clarke again until they were both sacked in December 2013. 2023 – Roy Hodgson signed a new contract as Manager of Crystal Palace, while Steven Gerrard was appointed Al-Ettifaq boss in Saudi Arabia. Other management moves 1996 - Ex-reds player and boss Graeme Souness was appointed Manager of Southampton. He was in charge at The Dell for less than a year, during which time he guided them to just one point clear of relegation from the top flight, and famously signed Ali Dia, George Weah’s alleged cousin. 2009 - Paul Ince was re-appointed Manager of MK Dons. He led them to mid-table in League One before resigning at the end of the season. 2014 – Former reds coach Paco Herrera was named as Manager of second division side Unión Deportiva Las Palmas for the first time, who are based in the Canary Islands. He was sacked in October 2015, but returned to the job in November 2018, but only for another four months before being dismissed again. Pelle off 2005 - Mauricio Pellegrino signed for Deportivo Alavés, having been released by the reds two weeks earlier. The Argentine centre-back had rarely impressed in his thirteen reds games, after signing from Valencia on a free transfer in January. He had arrived at Anfield with an impressive reputation, having previously won the Spanish League three times and the UEFA Cup, as well as appearing in two Champions League Finals. Mixed fortunes at the World Cup 2018 – Xherdan Shaqiri won his last cap as a Stoke City player as Switzerland lost 1-0 to Sweden in a Round of 16 game in Saint Petersburg. Meanwhile, Jordan Henderson had a spot-kick saved as England progressed past Colombia at the same stage after a penalty shoot-out in Moscow. On the move 2002 - Crewe Alexandra released Phil Charnock, who had been the youngest ever red to appear in European competition, back in September 1992. He had played 183 times for the Alex, moving on to Port Vale later that summer. 2006 - Reserves defender David Raven signed for Carlisle United after just four senior reds appearances. He scored once in 154 games for the Cumbrians before joining Shrewsbury Town in July 2010. 2009 - Daniel Sturridge joined Chelsea from Manchester City for an initial £3.5m after six strikes in 32 games for the Sky Blues. Red on the committee 2003 - Former reds Director Noel White was re-elected as Chairman of the FA’s International Committee. The former Liverpool Chairman, who was on the Board of Directors at Anfield for 21 years until his resignation in October 2006, was confirmed in the post for a further year, having first been elected in 1994. Also on the move 2008 - Florent Sinama-Pongolle joined Club Atlético de Madrid from Real Club Recreativo de Huelva for £8m after 22 goals in 68 games. On the same day, ex-reserves forward Andy Parkinson moved to Cambridge United on a free transfer from Notts County. He struck once in twelve Conference outings last season as they narrowly failed to return to the Football League. 2019 – Irish centre-half Conor Masterson signed for Queens Park Rangers, notching once in twenty senior appearances in his first two seasons with the R’s. On the same day, winger Bobby Adekanye left the reds to sign for S.S. Happy birthday Mo 1992 – Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah was born in Basyoun. He joined Basel from El Mokawloon El Arab on his twentieth birthday, netting twenty times in 79 games and helping them to claim the League title in 2013 before moving on to Chelsea for a reported £11m in January 2014. He arrived at Anfield from Roma for an initial €42m in July 2017, scoring a stunning 211 goals in 349 games across his first seven campaigns, helping us to claim the Premier League title, UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, League Cup and FA Community Shield. In and outs 1999 - Sander Westerveld signed from Vitesse Arnhem for £4m, a then British record fee for a goalkeeper. He made 103 appearances between our sticks, helping us to claim five trophies in 2001, before moving on to Real Sociedad in December 2001 after the arrival of Jerzy Dudek and Chris Kirkland. 1932 – Forward Alan Scott was sold to Swindon Town. He bagged fourteen goals in 48 reds games after joining from Mansfield Town for £7,000 in May 1958, before moving to Crewe Alexandra for £4,000 on his 31st birthday. 2002 - Centre-half Dick White died in Nottingham. He signed from Sc***horpe United in November 1955 and won a Second Division championship medal in 1962, having switched to right-back and lost the captaincy with the arrival or Ron Yeats. He struck once in a total of 217 reds appearances, moving on to Doncaster Rovers in May 1962. 1996 - Centre-half Allenby Chilton died in Southwick. He signed for the reds as an amateur in the summer of 1938, before moving to Manchester United that November, without making a senior reds appearance. He helped them to the 1948 FA Cup and League title four years later and was made club captain during the 1953/54 season. He left Old Trafford in March 1955 after 389 United games to become player-manager for Grimsby Town. 1990 - Danish reserves keeper Martin Hansen was born in Glostrup. He moved up to Melwood in the summer of 2007 after featuring in our successful FA Youth Cup campaign earlier that year. However, he failed to break through to the first-team squad, moving back to his native land to join Viborg on a free transfer in January 2012. Jack’s treble 1948 - Jack Balmer scored a hat-trick as we beat an Ulster Select side 5-1 at the Maple Leaf Stadium in Toronto, with Billy Liddell and Albert Stubbins also on target. At Euro ’96 1996 - Scotland lost 2-0 to England at Wembley in their group fixture. Scots skipper Gary McAllister had a penalty saved by David Seaman, while Steve McManaman, Jamie Redknapp and future red Paul Ince also featured. Redders had come on from the bench, but only lasted 38 minutes before he was carried off injured. Mark Kennedy played for the Republic of Ireland in a 3-0 US Nike Cup win over Bolivia in New Jersey on the same day. 1993 - Redknapp also represented his country as the Under-21’s beat France 1-0 in the Final of the Toulon Tournament, playing alongside future reds Academy coach Mike Sheron. Javier Mascherano, future red Maxi Rodríguez and ex-red Mark González also appeared in World Cup qualifiers that day, as did El-Hadji Diouf, who netted in a 2-2 draw in Liberia while winning his last cap as a Bolton Wanderers player. 2004 - Baroš scored in his third consecutive game for the Czech Republic as they beat Latvia 2-1 in their opening Euro 2004 game in Portugal, with Vladimír Šmicer coming off the bench. Happy birthday Saint 1938 - Ian St. John was born in Motherwell. He joined from his hometown club in May 1961 for a then club record fee of £37,500. The Saint scored 118 goals in 425 games for the reds, including the winning goal in the 1965 FA Cup Final and also helped us to win two First Division titles, the Second Division and FA Charity Shield, before moving to South Africa in February 1971 to join Hellenic. 1988 – Former reserves centre-half Godwin Antwi was born in Kumasi in Ghana. He appeared in our victorious FA Youth Cup campaign in 2006 but spent most of his time out on loan. He was released in June 2009 and was last seen playing for Melaka United in Malaysia. 1936 – Left-winger Ron Smith was born in Liverpool. He signed amateur terms in 1955, turning professional two years later. However, he moved on to Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic in 1959, having failed to break through to the first team. In comes Tommy 1956 – Scottish keeper Tommy Younger signed from Hibernian for £9,000. He made 127 reds appearances, as well as winning 24 caps for Scotland. He returned north of the border after three years at Anfield to join Falkirk, and later became the President of the Scottish FA. He died in January 1984. Red trebles 1922 - Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers bagged a hat-trick as we beat Genoa 4-1 in a friendly at their Stadio di Marassi. Dick Forshaw nabbed the other. 1953 - Billy Liddell netted a treble as we beat a Chicago All Stars side 4-2 at Soldier Field, with Kevin Baron also on target. Disaster strikes for Djibril again 2006 - Djibril Cissé broke his leg while winning his thirtieth cap in France’s 3-1 friendly defeat of China in Saint-Étienne. Xabi Alonso, Luis García, Harry Kewell and Pepe Reina all also featured in friendlies that day, with future red Fernando Torres on target in Spain’s 2-1 defeat of Croatia in Geneva. 2017 – Ex-reds Iago Aspas, Sebastián Coates and Pepe Reina all featured in international friendlies. 2019 – Aspas played for Spain again in their 4-1 European Championships qualifying win in the Faroe Islands. Ex-reds Nikolay Mihaylov and Brad Smith were also in international action that day. Lancs champs again 1947 – We claimed the Lancashire Senior Cup for the seventh time by beating Bury 2-1 at Anfield in the Final. Albert Stubbins and Jack Balmer struck our goals. On the move 2013 – Hungarian keeper Péter Gulácsi joined Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg on a free transfer. He had sat on the reds bench on 51 occasions without making a senior appearance. 2002 - Nicolas Anelka joined Manchester City from Paris Saint-Germain for £13m. He struck 46 times in 103 games for City before joining Fenerbahçe Spor Kulübü for £7m in January 2005. Christian milestones 2000 - Future red Christian Ziege won his fiftieth cap in Germany’s 8-2 trouncing of Liechtenstein in a friendly in Freiburg im Breisgau. Dietmar Hamann and future red Markus Babbel both also played. On the same day, Alberto Aquilani played for Italy Under-15’s as they lost 2-0 to Argentina. 1997 - Ziege won his last cap as a Bayern München player, and 31st to date, as the Germans were held to a goalless draw in a World Cup qualifier in the Ukraine. On the same day, future red Paul Ince featured in England’s 1-0 defeat of France in Le Tournoi in Montpellier, while fellow future red Alex Manninger played in a 3-1 win for Austria Under-21’s in a European Championships qualifying win in Latvia and Vegard Heggem featuring as Norway lost a qualifier 2-0 in Hungary. New contracts 2007 - Xabi Alonso and Pepe Reina both signed new contracts until 2012. Edging towards the title 1947 - We moved to within touching distance of our fifth League title as our 2-1 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers took us one point clear of both Wolves and Manchester United, in our final game of the season. Pepe off 2006 - Pepe Reina was sent off at Chelsea after clashing with Arjen Robben as we were beaten 2-0. Luis García came on as a substitute and was later himself substituted. Reds boss Benítez commented after that game, “I'm in a hurry and I must go to the hospital to see how Robben is, he could be in hospital for a week,” following his theatrics. He had joined the reds from PFC Levski Sofia in July 2007 but work permit problems helped ensure he never played for the first team as he joined Twente on loan just two months after arriving at Anfield. Craig Dawson then netted on his debut, with Rúben Neves on target after the break. 2015 – Steven Gerrard played his 700th reds game as we came from behind to win 2-1 at Bolton Wanderers in our FA Cup Fourth Round replay. God on the move 2009 - Robbie Fowler signed for North Queensland Fury, who play in the Australian A-League. He bagged nine goals in 26 outings before moving on to Perth Glory. Red debuts 1928 - We suffered our first home League defeat to West Ham United when Dick Edmed was on target from the spot as we lost 3-1, with forward Bob Clark making his debut. Jimmy Ruffell bagged two of his four strikes past the reds, with Vic Watson nabbing one of his nine goals against us. 1954 - Forward Derek Brownbill was born in Liverpool. Jordon Ibe was also on target after the break as we headed towards Wembley. 2018 – Origi pounced on a Jordan Pickford error to hand us victory in the Anfield derby in the sixth minute of second-half stoppage time, having already hit the crossbar from close range late in the game. Stevie again 2007 - Steven Gerrard converted a penalty to score in his sixth consecutive home game as we thumped Bolton Wanderers 4-0 in a Premiership fixture at Anfield. Nicky’s debut 1989 - Nicky Tanner made his reds bow as we won 4-1 at managerless Manchester City, with Ian Rush grabbing a brace and future City players Peter Beardsley and Steve McMahon also netting. Meanwhile, ex-red Luis Suárez captained Uruguay to a 2-0 win over Ghana, with Darwin Núñez and ex-red Sebastián Coates also featuring, although this was not enough for them to progress. Youngsters in Arabia 2003 - Three reds youngsters appeared in the Under-20’s World Championship Finals in the United Arab Emirates. Billy’s record 1957 – Billy Liddell played his 431st League game for the reds as we lost a Second Division encounter 3-1 at Ipswich Town, a new club record. The grandson of post-war utility man Bill Jones, he signed from Crewe Alexandra for £300,000 in October 1991 and played 243 times for the reds without ever getting on the scoresheet, before injury ended his career. He helped us to win the FA Cup and Coca Cola Cup in his eight years at Anfield. 1911 - Outside-right Berry Nieuwenhuys was born in Kroonstad in South Africa. He signed from Germiston Calies in September 1933 and struck 79 times in 257 reds games, helping us to the League title in 1947 before joining Arsenal later that year. He bagged five goals in 61 appearances for the Black Cats, before moving on to Tranmere Rovers in July 2004. 2000 - Ex-loanee keeper Mark Prudhoe was released by basement side Southend United after just six appearances. 1994 - Future reds first-team coach Kevin Keen joined Stoke City from Wolverhampton Wanderers for £300,000. He had netted nine times in 54 outings for Wolves. Happy birthday King Kenny 1951 - Kenny Dalglish was born in Dalmarnack, Glasgow. He signed from Celtic for £440,000 in August 1977 and bagged 172 goals in 515 games, helping us to countless honours, both as a player for which he is fêted by many as the finest ever on the pitch, and later in two spells as Manager. His greatest moments as a player include scoring the goals that clinched the European Cup at Wembley in 1978, and the first half of a League and FA Cup double at Stamford Bridge eight years later, while his efforts in the aftermath of the Hillsborough disaster ensure he retains an even more special place in our hearts. 1955 - Joey Jones was born in Bangor. He signed from Wrexham for £110,000 in July 1975 and made exactly a century of reds appearances, bagging three goals and helping us to win a European Cup, two League titles and the FA Charity Shield in his time at Anfield. He rejoined Wrexham for £210,000 in October 1978. Crazy Horse out of the traps 1967 - New record signing Emlyn Hughes made his reds debut in a 2-1 home League win over Stoke City, when Chris Lawler and Roger Hunt netted, while Peter Dobing bagged one of his eight goals past us. ‘Crazy Horse’ went on to make 665 reds appearances in total. 1953 – Centre-half Joe Maloney debuted as Bolton Wanderers held us to a goalless draw at Anfield. 1922 – Winger Cyril Gilhespy made his reds bow as we drew 0-0 at Blackburn Rovers. Setting club records 1978 - Ray Clemence set a club record for a goalkeeper by making his 336th consecutive appearance in a 3-1 defeat at Chelsea, with Steve Ogrizovic stepping in to make his debut in the next match. Phil Neal opened the scoring from the spot, our 5,000th League goal to date. Steve Finnieston struck the last two of his four goals against the reds, with Tommy Langley also on the scoresheet. 2000 - Liverpool fielded nine non-British born players for the first time, with Jamie Carragher and Dominic Matteo being the only home-grown talents who started our 1-1 Premiership draw at Old Trafford, when Patrik Berger netted a trademark free-kick before Ole Gunnar Solskjær equalised. Red trebles at Anfield 1905 - Jack Parkinson netted three in a 5-0 Second Division victory over Blackpool, with Robert Robinson and Arthur Goddard also scoring. 1950 - We also beat the Seasiders, with Willie Fagan and Billy Liddell on target in our 2-1 FA Cup Sixth Round win, as we headed towards our second Final. The legendary Stan Mortensen bagging one of his eleven strikes against the reds. 1981 - Graeme Souness grabbed a hat-trick to become the first and so far only reds player to bag two European trebles in the same season, in our 5-1 trouncing of CSKA Sofia in the European Cup Third Round first leg, en route to lifting the trophy for the third time. Derby joy 1972 - We thumped Everton 4-0 at Anfield with our first two strikes being own goals, from keeper Tommy Wright and John McLaughlin, with Wright also putting through his own net in his next game! Chris Lawler and Emlyn Hughes completed the scoring, the latter while playing his 200th League game for the reds. Most recently 2021 – Chelsea won 1-0 behind closed doors at Anfield, thanks to a Mason Mount strike. This condemned us to a fifth consecutive home defeat for the first time in our history. 2015 – We beat Burnley 2-0 at Anfield, thanks to a Jordan Henderson strike and header from Daniel Sturridge. 2017 – We beat Arsenal 3-1 at Anfield, with Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mané netting before the break. Danny Welbeck pulled a goal back, but Gini Wijnaldum struck late on. 1933 – Gordon Hodgson struck the only goal of the game as we beat Arsenal 1-0 at Highbury in a top-flight encounter as right-half Tom Morrison played his 200th reds game. Thumping Oldham 1944 - Jack Balmer scored four goals as we trounced Oldham Athletic 8-1 at Anfield, in a game that counted for the Wartime League Cup as well as the League. European disappointment 1992 - We lost 2-0 at Genoa in the first leg of our UEFA Cup Fourth Round encounter. Unfortunately, we also lost the Anfield return to crash out 4-1 on aggregate. Red R.I.P.s 1959 - Left-half Tom Bromilow died on a train while returning from a scouting mission for Leicester City. He signed professional terms at Anfield in 1919, having asked for a trial straight from the army. He went on to make 375 appearances, scoring eleven times while helping us to claim two League titles in successive seasons in the 1920’s, as well as earning full international honours with England. 1964 – Forward Vic Wright died. He struck 33 times in 85 reds games after signing from Rotherham United in March 1934. He moved on to Plymouth Argyle in June 1937. 2021 – Forward Phil Chisnall died. He signed from Manchester United for £25,000 in April 1964, after ten goals in 47 United games. However, he never established himself at Anfield, netting twice in nine appearances, leaving for Southend United in August 1967. For Scotland 1922 - Left-back Donald McKinlay won his second and final cap for Scotland in a 2-1 victory over Northern Ireland at Celtic Park. Partick Thistle’s ex-reds keeper Ken Campbell also featured for Scotland, while Billy Lacey was playing his final game as a reds player for the away side. 1911 - Centre-half Alex Raisbeck played for the Scottish League against a Football League side. 1907 - Ex-reds inside-right George Livingstone won his second and final cap, and only one as a Rangers player, as the Scots lost 1-0 in Wales, also in the British International Championships. Reds defender George Latham was on the winning side. 2019 – Future red Calvin Ramsay played for Scotland Under-16’s as they were thumped 4-0 by Denmark in a friendly in Malta. Future reds in opposition 2014 – Alberto Moreno faced Emre Can in an Under-21’s friendly in Palencia, with Spain beating Germany 2-0, with this being Can’s last cap at this level while playing for Bayer 04 Leverkusen. Beating the rest 1931 – Gordon Hodgson and future reds Ernie Blenkinsop and Tosh Johnson all featured as England beat The Rest 3-2 in a trial match at Highbury, with Dixie Dean bagging a treble. Tosh leaves the Vetch 1984 - John Toshack was sacked as Manager of Swansea City, after just two wins in eleven games in this second spell in charge. Other reds games 2006 – Charlton Athletic held us to a goalless draw at Anfield. 1964 – We came from two goals down to draw 2-2 at Sheffield Wednesday. Ian St. John and Willie Stevenson were on the scoresheet. This was Bill Shankly’s 200th game in charge. 1961 – We drew 2-2 in a Second Division match at Portsmouth with Alan Banks and Johnny Morrissey scoring our goals. 1911 – We lost 1-0 at Tottenham Hotspur as Billy Minter grabbed one of his five goals past us, with Sam Hardy saving a Bobby Steel penalty. Keepers on the move 1995 - Sander Westerveld joined Vitesse Arnhem from Twente. He played 101 League games for them before moving to Anfield four years later. 2004 - Former reserves custodian Ian Dunbavin joined Morecambe on loan from fellow Conference side Shrewsbury Town on loan, making three appearances. Also on the move 1996 - Paul Stewart joined Sunderland on a free transfer following a loan period. He netted five times in 37 games, before being offloaded to Stoke City. 2011 – Ex-reserves forward Lauri Dalla Valle joined Bournemouth on loan from Fulham, netting twice in eight outings for the Cherries. 2019 – Former reds coach Paco Herrera was sacked as Manager of Unión Deportiva Las Palmas for the second time, having led them to only three victories in fourteen League matches. He joined the reds from Brøndby IF for £5.8m in January 2006, notching fourteen times in 232 games before returning to his old club in Denmark in August 2014 for a reported £3m, having helped us to claim the League Cup in 2012. 1981 - Stephen Warnock was born in Ormskirk. He played 67 reds games, notching once, before moving to Blackburn Rovers in January 2007 for £1.5m, although he moved on to Aston Villa in August 2009. 1990 – Winger Victor Moses was born in Lagos, Nigeria. He signed on loan from Chelsea in September 2013, netting twice in 22 outings before returning to his parent club at the end of the season. Team of the year 1978 - We were voted the best team in the world at the International Sports Writers’ Association awards ceremony, with the trophy being presented to Vice Chairman Sidney Reakes. Len Davies netted one of his seven strikes against the reds, with Hugh Ferguson also on target as left-back Donald McKinlay reached 300 League appearances for the reds. 1914 – Half-back Harry Lowe played his hundredth League game for the club as we lost 1-0 at Bradford Park Avenue. Mixed fortunes against Bury 1896 - We beat Bury 3-1 at Anfield thanks to a George Allan brace and a goal from Malcolm McVean. 1908 - Joe Hewitt netted as we lost 2-1 at Gigg Lane, with Billy Hibbert scoring two of his thirteen goals against the reds. Pompey despair We have twice lost at Portsmouth on this day in history. 1953 - Sammy Smyth grabbed our consolation as we were thumped 5-1. Signing on 2000 - Djimi Traoré signed a new four-year contract. He struck once in 141 reds appearances before joining Charlton Athletic for £2m in August 2006, having helped us to claim the Champions League in 2005. 1947 – Left-winger Doug McAvoy signed from his hometown club Kilmarnock for £7,000. He only made two senior reds appearances, moving back to Scotland to join Queen Of The South in September 1949. 1935 – Left-half John Shield signed from Bishop Auckland. Mixed fortunes for the youngsters 2003 - Zak Whitbread faced future red Javier Mascherano as Argentina Under-20’s beat the USA 2-1 on a golden goal in the Quarter-finals of the World Championship Finals in the United Arab Emirates, with Mascherano grabbing the injury time equaliser. Daniele’s debut 2006 - Future reds loanee keeper Daniele Padelli won his first cap for Italy Under-21’s as they beat Luxembourg 2-0 in Vibo Valentia. He was then on loan at Crotone from Sampdoria.
