Liddell’s last 1960 - Billy Liddell scored his 228th and final reds goal, becoming our oldest post-war goalscorer, aged 38 years 55 days. We beat Stoke City 5-1 in the Second Division at Anfield, with Jimmy Harrower adding a brace, and Roger Hunt and Dave Hickson also netting. Hickson was in fact on target for the fourth consecutive match, in which time he had struck six times in total. A new boss 1951 – Don Welsh was officially appointed Manager. His contract awarded him £1,500 per year, with an additional annual £500 for expenses. He took charge of 232 reds games, winning just 81, and has the indignity of being our first boss to get the sack, after presiding over our relegation from the top flight in 1954, and failing to lead us back to the promised land. A manc thrashing 2023 – We secured our record victory over Manchester United, thumping them 7-0 at Anfield, their joint worst ever defeat. Cody Gakpo gave us the lead shortly before the break, but the floodgates opened in the second half. Darwin Núñez headed in before Gakpo netted again. Mohamed Salah bagged a brace as he became our all-time top Premier League goalscorer. Núñez nodded in again, with Roberto Firmino completing the scoring. Fernando’s treble 2008 - Fernando Torres scored a hat-trick as we thumped West Ham United 4-0 at Anfield, with Steven Gerrard completing the scoring. This was his second successive home treble. 2022 – Sadio Mané bagged the only goal of the Hammers’ League visit to Anfield. Crazy Horse OBE 1980 - Emlyn Hughes was presented with the OBE by Her Majesty the Queen. ‘Crazy Horse’ played 665 times in his twelve years at Anfield, netting 49 times and winning two European Cups, four League titles, two UEFA Cups, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and two FA Charity Shields. His greatest season was probably 1976/77 when he captained the side to within a whisker of the treble, as well as being voted the Football Writers’ Player of the Year. Sadly, he died in November 2004. More goal feasts against the Potters 1983 - We beat Stoke City 5-1 at Anfield again. Kenny Dalglish scored twice, with the other goals coming from Phil Neal, Craig Johnston and Graeme Souness. Kenny netted his 300th senior club goal that day as Ian Rush reached a century of reds outings, with future Toffee Paul Bracewell on target for the visitors. 1955 - A Johnny Evans brace was not enough as we lost 4-2. This was our first home defeat to the Potters after nineteen previous wins and seven draws. Johnny King netted the first two of his five goals past us, with Harry Oscroft nabbing one of his six and Jack Malkin also on target. Mixed fortunes against the Hoops We faced Queens Park Rangers twice on this day in the 1980’s. 1986 - We were held 2-2 at Anfield in the second leg of our League Cup Semi-final, despite twice taking the lead on the night. Steve McMahon and Craig Johnston netted our goals, but Jan Mølby missed a penalty and Gary Gillespie and Ronnie Whelan both scored own goals. This put us out of the competition, as we had lost the first game 1-0 away from home. Bruce Grobbelaar was playing his 300th reds game. 1988 - We won at Loftus Road in the League, with John Barnes scoring the only goal of the game. This was our last outing on their controversial plastic playing surface. Alex Watson made the first of his nine senior appearances in this game. Happy birthdays 1988 - Damien Plessis was born in Neuville-aux-Bois, France. He signed in August 2007 from Olympique Lyonnais on a free transfer, making an impressive debut at Arsenal in the following April. He struck once in eight senior appearances, before being sold to Panathinaikos in August 2010. 1896 - Centre-half David Pratt was born in Lochore, Fife. He played 84 times for the reds after signing from Bradford City in January 1923, scoring just once and being known for his long throw-ins. He left Anfield to sign for Bury in November 1927. 1955 – Reserves keeper Bob Wardle was born in Halifax. He joined from Shrewsbury Town in a straight swap for Steve Ogrizovic in August 1982, but never made our first team, and was forced to retire through injury inside a year. 1986 - Former reserves keeper Paul Willis was born in Northern Ireland. He was released in the summer of 2006 after failing to break through to the first team, later playing for AFC Liverpool. 1993- Centre-back Stephen Sama was born in Bamenda, Cameroon. He signed from Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund in July 2009. He never played a senior game, moving on to VfB Stuttgart in September 2014. 1955 – Scottish keeper Bill McCann died. He signed from Abercorn in May 1894, playing seventeen times before moving on the following March. Beginning and end 2005 - Scott Carson made his reds debut as we lost 1-0 at Newcastle United thanks to a goal from Laurent Robert. This was Graeme Souness’ first win over the reds as opposing Manager, at the eleventh attempt. 1977 - We also faced the Geordies when Steve Heighway grabbed the only goal of the game at Anfield. Phil Neal had a spot-kick saved by keeper Mike Mahoney. 1949 – We lost 2-1 at Chelsea despite going in at the break ahead through Jimmy Payne. Roy Bentley scored the first of his five past us with Ken Armstrong nabbing the winner. Winger Bob Priday was making his fortieth and last reds appearance. International goalscorers 1923 - Ephraim Longworth netted his only goal for England as they drew 2-2 with Wales in the British International Championships in Cardiff, playing alongside clubmate Harry Chambers. Ex-red Robert Matthews won his second Welsh cap in this game, the only one he won while a Bristol City player. Reds right-half Maurice Parry also played for Wales. 2014 – Daniel Sturridge scored the only goal of Roy Hodgson’s England’s friendly meeting with Denmark at Wembley. Mohamed Salah struck while winning his first cap as a Chelsea player in Egypt’s 2-0 friendly defeat of Bosnia-Herzegovina in Austria. Ex-red Raul Meireles netted as Portugal thumped Cameroon 5-1 in Leiria, while Gabriel Paletta made his senior debut for Italy as they lost 1-0 to Spain in Madrid. Sadio Mané struck his last goal as a Red Bull Salzburg player as Senegal drew 1-1 with Mali in a friendly in Dakar. Future red Andy Robertson also won his first cap in Scotland’s 1-0 win in Poland. Tom Ince won his first cap while on loan at Crystal Palace as England Under-21’s beat Wales 1-0 in a European Championships qualifier, with Nuri Şahin playing for Turkey for the final time as a Real Madrid player as Turkey beat Sweden 2-1 in Ankara. Mixed fortunes against the Owls We have twice faced The Wednesday in top-flight encounters on this day in history, with the home side winning 3-0 on each occasion. 1910 - We lost at Owlerton as Tom Brittleton netted twice, with Billy Lloyd also on target. On the same day, Ernest Peake played for Wales as they lost 1-0 in the British International Championships in Scotland. 1927 - Harry Chambers struck twice as we won in L4, with Donald McKinlay adding the third, his 35th and last reds goal. Other wins 1921 - We won 2-1 at Huddersfield Town to complete a League double over the Terriers inside a week, with Harry Chambers and Dick Johnson finding the net. 1958 - Billy Liddell and Bobby Murdoch struck as we beat Derby County 2-0 at Anfield in a Second Division fixture. Buying the site 2008 - The club announced that it had completed the purchase of 100% of the official club website, liverpoolfc.tv. Other reds games 1994 – We lost 2-0 at Blackburn Rovers. Jason Wilcox bagged one of his four goals against us before Tim Sherwood struck. 1963 – We drew 2-2 at Ipswich Town. Kevin Lewis scored before Ted Phillips scored the last of his five past us. Ian St. John gave us a half-time lead, but Royston Stephenson netted the final of his four goals against the reds. 1949 – We lost 2-1 at Chelsea despite going in at the break ahead through Jimmy Payne. Roy Bentley scored the first of his five past us with Ken Armstrong nabbing the winner. 1938 – We drew 2-2 at Leicester City with Alf Hanson netting both our goals. 1932 – We drew 2-2 at Blackpool. Jimmy Hampson scored one of his six goals against us before Dave Wright and Gordon Hodgson struck. Phil Watson struck one of his five past us in the final minute. Nando again 2009 - Fernando Torres was named the PFA Fans’ Player of the Month for February of that year, so becoming the third consecutive reds winner after two straight wins by Steven Gerrard. Nando had notched three times in three League outings during the previous month. International beginning and end 1989 - Ronnie Rosenthal netted his first goal for Israel as a Standard de Liège player, the only goal of their World Cup qualifier against New Zealand in Tel-Aviv. 2013 – Jordon Ibe won his second and last cap for England Under-18’s in their 1-0 friendly defeat in Belgium. On the move 1996 - Future red Steve Finnan joined Notts County on loan from Birmingham City. He played twenty times, before signing permanently seven months later. 2015 – Former reds left-winger Albert Riera re-signed for his first club Real Club Deportivo Mallorca, having been sacked by Udinese four months earlier. He played just six times in this second spell. 2024 - Bournemouth announced the departure of Richard Hughes as their Technical Director at the end of the season. He then joined the reds as Sporting Director. -
Wembley glory at last 1965 – This day finally brought the FA Cup to Anfield for the first time in our history. The game against Leeds United was goalless after ninety minutes, with full-back Gerry Byrne playing most of the match with a broken collar-bone. Roger Hunt opened the scoring in extra time, before Billy Bremner equalised for the Yorkshire side with one of his five goals past us. With five minutes remaining, “up popped the head of Ian St. John” to win the cup. Winger Peter Thompson reached a century of reds outings in this game. 1971 – Peter Thompson played his 400th game for the club as we beat Southampton 1-0 at Anfield, thanks to an Emlyn Hughes goal as we finished the League season in fourth, ahead of the FA Cup Final. 1980 - We played in the only FA Cup Semi-final to go to a third replay, which we unfortunately lost to Arsenal courtesy of a Brian Talbot goal at Highfield Road, one of his six strikes against the reds, who went on to l1999ose the Final to Second Division West Ham United. 1996 - We also faced the Gunners, holding them to a goalless Premiership draw at Highbury. This was the first time since three substitutes were permitted for League games four years previously that we did not name a keeper on the bench, with Mark Kennedy, Ian Rush and Michael Thomas getting the nod. Luis and Mo the best 2014 - Luis Suárez was named as the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year for a season in which he struck 31 times in total in 37 reds outings as we came close to claiming the League title. 2018 - Mohamed Salah won the same award, towards the end of a season in which he notched 44 times in 52 games, helping us to reach the UEFA Champions League Final in Kyiv. On our way to Athens 2007 - Jamie Carragher played his ninetieth European game in our Champions League Semi-final second leg with Chelsea at Anfield, breaking Ian Callaghan’s club record. Daniel Agger converted a cleverly-worked free-kick to take the tie into extra time, following our single goal defeat in the first meeting. Dirk Kuyt had an effort ruled out for offside, and also hit the woodwork before Pepe Reina was the hero in a penalty shoot-out that we won 4-1, saving from both Geremi and Arjen Robben. Kuyt struck our decisive fourth spot-kick. This was the first time we had faced the same team in European competition in three consecutive seasons, as well as being the third round in a row in which Bolo Zenden had come up against a former employer, following ties with Barcelona and PSV Eindhoven. Striking legends in and out 1990 - Kenny Dalglish made his 515th and final appearance in our 1-0 home defeat of Derby County, thanks to a goal from Gary Gillespie, as we were awarded our eighteenth, and most recent, League title. He was aged 39 years 58 days, a post-war club record. This game had been postponed from February. 1972 - We also faced the Rams, losing a First Division fixture 1-0 at the Baseball Ground thanks to a goal from John McGovern. 1958 – Outside-right Fred Morris joined from Mansfield Town for a £7,000 fee. He bagged fourteen goals in 48 reds games, moving on to Crewe Alexandra for £4,000 in June 1960. 1914 – Defender Ernest Peake moved on to Third Lanark. He joined the reds as a Welsh international from his hometown club Aberystwyth Town in May 1908, netting six times in 55 games. 1899 – Forward Peter Kyle arrived from Clyde for £100, failing to score in five first-team games before moving on to Leicester Fosse in May 1900. On the same day, Scottish inside-right Andrew McCowie moved on to Woolwich Arsenal after netting eleven times in 35 games since signing from Cambuslang Hibernian in October 1896. Other arrivals 1973 - Jimmy Case signed from South Liverpool for £500. He went on to net 46 times in 269 reds games, helping us to three European Cups, four League titles, UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, League Cup and three FA Charity Shields. 1902 – Keeper Peter Platt arrived from Blackburn Rovers, playing 44 times before moving on to Luton Town in 1904. He sadly died aged just 39 in a mini-flu epidemic in Nuneaton in January 1922. 1897 – Right-winger Bobby Marshall signed from Leith Athletic. He scored twice in 21 reds games, moving on to Portsmouth in 1899. Crashing out? 2019 – We lost 3-0 at Barcelona in the first leg of our UEFA Champions League Semi-final to leave our chances of reaching the Final in Madrid hanging by a thread, despite a decent performance. Ex-red Luis Suárez opened the scoring before Lionel Messi added a late brace. Gary Mac yet again 2001 - Gary McAllister scored for the fifth straight game in our 2-0 win at Bradford City as we headed towards the Champions League. Michael Owen nabbed the other goal in a game that was originally postponed the previous December. Also recently 2017 – Emre Can struck a spectacular goal, the only one of our trip to Watford. 2016 - We lost 3-1 at Swansea City, with left-back Brad Smith seeing red. André Ayew struck twice for the home side, with Jack Cork also on target, as Christian Benteke scored for the reds. 2012 – Brazilian left-back Fábio Aurélio played his 134th and last reds game as Fulham won for the first time at Anfield, so completing their first ever League double over us. A presentation was made to Brian Hall before the game, marking his retirement as Public Relations Manager, a post he had held since 1991. Martin Škrtel put through his own net as ex-reds reserve Alex Kačaniklić attempted to convert John Arne Riise’s cross for the only goal. 2011 - We beat Newcastle United 3-0 at Anfield. Maxi Rodríguez opened the scoring before Dirk Kuyt converted a penalty and Luis Suárez struck, with ex-Toon star Andy Carroll making a late cameo from the bench. Replay 86 2006 - The Replay 86 game was played at Anfield in front of 32,947 in aid of the Marina Dalglish Appeal. The two sides were representing the 1986 FA Cup Final teams, and the only goal came in the final minute, through former reds reserves striker John Durnin. Also against the Blues 1937 - Jack Balmer was on target as we were held to a 1-1 draw by Chelsea at Anfield in the final game of a League campaign that saw us finish in a disappointing eighteenth, just three points clear of relegation. Dickie Spence netted one of his six goals against the reds. On the same day, Bill Shankly was on the losing side at Wembley, as Preston North End lost 3-1 to Sunderland in the first FA Cup Final to be played in the month of May. Goals galore 1978 - King Kenny grabbed a hat-trick in our 4-0 defeat of Manchester City at Anfield, with Phil Neal adding a penalty. 1926 - Forward Tommy Reid scored both goals on his reds debut in our 2-2 home draw with Sheffield United, with outside-right Cyril Oxley playing his 34th and final reds game as we finished the season in sixth place. Harry Johnson scored two of his seven goals past us. 1999 - Less happily, Jamie Carragher scored an own goal as we came from 2-0 behind at half time to beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 at Anfield in the League, having already scored an own goal in the reverse fixture that season! Paul Ince struck with Steve McManaman netting his 66th and final reds goal after Jamie Redknapp’s spot-kick. Spurs’ Mauricio Taricco was sent off just before the break while Stig Inge Bjørnebye and Bjørn Tore Kvarme both played their final reds games, with the young Steven Gerrard instrumental in our comeback after coming off the bench at half time. Steffen Iversen had netted the other goal for the visitors. 1943 - Cyril Done struck for the fourth consecutive game, grabbing a brace as we beat Bolton Wanderers 4-0 in our Lancashire Cup Second Round second leg at Anfield, with Thomas Pearson and Jackie Campbell also on target. This game also counted towards the Wartime League. 1979 - We also faced the Trotters in a game originally postponed from three months earlier, when Ray Kennedy netted twice and David Johnson and Kenny Dalglish were also on the scoresheet in a 4-1 win in wintry conditions at Burnden Park, with the home side’s score coming from a Graeme Souness own goal. Bolton keeper Jim McDonagh said afterwards, “Liverpool are perfection. This team would have been good enough to win the 1978 World Cup!” Eleven in a row 1982 - We won 2-0 at home to Nottingham Forest, our eleventh successive League win - a joint club record with 2013/14, and tenth straight win in all competitions, a then club record. Craig Johnston bagged both goals. Bob off the mark 1948 – Left-half Bob Paisley struck the first of his twelve reds goals as ended the season in tenth by beating Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 at Anfield, with Jack Balmer also on target. Another trophy 1946 - We beat Everton 3-1 at Anfield to claim the Liverpool Senior Cup. Bill Jones and Harry Eastham netted for the reds, with the Blues’ Purvis putting through his own net. Jameo off 1993 - David James was dismissed at Norwich City on the hour mark with David Phillips netting the only goal of the game past Mike Hooper from the subsequent spot-kick, as he became the first substitute keeper to take the field for the reds in the Premier League, in his 73rd and final senior reds appearance. This was a vital result as we finished in sixth, three places and three points behind City who reached the UEFA Cup, which we failed to do. English reds 1964 - Roger Hunt scored in England’s 3-0 victory over ‘Young England’. 1996 - Michael Owen netted a brace for the Under-16’s as they beat Turkey 2-1 in a European Championships group game in Austria. 2002 – David Mannix and David Raven both played for England Under-17’s in their goalless draw with host nation Denmark in a European Championships Finals group game. 2012 – Ex-reds boss Roy Hodgson was appointed Manager of the senior England side. 2016 – Curtis Jones struck as England Under-15’s lost 7-5 to Croatia, with clubmates Elijah Dixon-Bonner and Bobby Duncan also featuring. 2022 – Carter Pinnington featured for England Under-15’s as they lost a friendly 3-1 to Romania. An English treble 1935 - Sam English scored a hat-trick as we beat Exeter City 3-1 in a testimonial match for former reds full-back Jimmy Gray at St. James Park. Scottish-born South African international Gray had only ever played one senior reds game, but turned out 221 times for the Grecians, helping them to finish runners up in the Third Division South in 1933. First and last caps 1985 - Michael Robinson won his first cap as a Queens Park Rangers player, and nineteenth in all, as Norway held the Republic of Ireland to a goalless draw in a World Cup qualifier in Dublin. His former clubmates Jim Beglin, Mark Lawrenson and Ronnie Whelan all also featured. Ex-red Avi Cohen and future reds John Barnes and Mark Wright all also won international caps that day. 1991 - Poland’s European Championships qualifying visit to Lansdowne Road also ended goalless. This was the twentieth meeting between the countries, with John Aldridge winning his final cap as a Real Sociedad player, and 39th in total. Ray Houghton, Steve Staunton and ex-reds reserve Kevin Sheedy also played. John Barnes, Steve Nicol, ex-red Jim Magilton and future reds Stig Inge Bjørnebye, Istvan Kozma, Øyvind Leonhardsen, Gary McAllister, Colin Pascoe, Karl-Heinz Riedle and Dean Saunders all also represented their countries on the same day. Other games on this day 1957 – Tony Rowley and Billy Liddell netted as we beat Bristol City 2-1 in a Second Division encounter in L4, to finish the season in third place, just missing out on promotion again. 1920 – Harry Chambers nabbed the only goal of our visit to Sunderland as our season ended with a fifth-place finish, just behind the hosts. Also in and out 2024 – Centre-half Carter Pinnington signed pro terms with the reds. On the same day, it was announced that goalkeeping coach John Achterberg would be leaving the club at the end of the season, having been with the club since June 2009. St. Michael the Dad 2003 - Michael Owen became a father when his future bride Louise Bonsall gave birth to their daughter, Gemma Rose. Other internationals 1975 – John Toshack played for Wales as they won a European Championships qualifier 3-1 in Luxembourg. 1993 – Roy Hodgson took charge of Switzerland as they beat Italy 1-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Bern. 1994 – Future red Rigobert Song played for Cameroon as they drew a friendly 2-2 in South Korea. -
Debutants 1963 - Full-back Chris Lawler made his reds bow in a 2-2 draw at home to West Bromwich Albion, with Roger Hunt adding to a Ronnie Moran penalty. This was our third consecutive 2-2 League draw. 1935 - Keeper Stanley Kane made his reds debut in our 2-1 derby win at Anfield. Gordon Hodgson netted both our goals, including one from the spot. Dixie Dean also converted a penalty, one of his nineteen derby strikes. 1909 - Forward Bill Hunter made his only senior appearance in our 2-0 top-flight defeat at Preston North End. Herbert Danson struck one of his four goals past us, with Percy Smith also on the scoresheet. 1999 - Future red Djibril Cissé made his senior club debut, coming off the bench in Auxerre’s 1-0 home defeat by Paris Saint-Germain. Bernard Diomède was also in the Auxerre side that day. Cumpleaños feliz Nando 1984 - Fernando Torres was born in Madrid. He signed from Club Atlético de Madrid for a club record £20.2m in July 2007 and notched an astounding 81 times in 142 reds outings, becoming a firm favourite on the Kop before moving to Chelsea for £50m in January 2011. Walking in 1984 - John Wark signed from Ipswich Town for £475,000 He struck an impressive 42 times in his 108 games for the reds. He left Anfield in January 1988 for £100,000 to return to Portman Road. 2024 - Richard Hughes was appointed as the club’s new Sporting Director, a role he took on three months later. More derby joy 2005 - We beat Everton 2-1 at Anfield as we continued to chase our neighbours for a top-four finish. Steven Gerrard opened the scoring from a free-kick after Luis García was felled. The diminutive Spaniard then put us two ahead with an opportunist header at the break. Milan Baroš was dismissed for a reckless lunge on Alan Stubbs before Tim Cahill pulled a goal back, the first of his five goals past us. However, we held on to secure our 150th home Premiership win as we used three substitutions before the break for the first time, with Stephen Warnock, Didi Hamann and Fernando Morientes all going off injured. García spent the second half playing on despite having suffered an ankle injury at the end of the first period. Good and bad runs 1988 - Our 1-0 defeat at Goodison was one of only two League defeats that season, with this game ending a League record-equalling 29-match unbeaten run. Alex Watson sat on the reds bench while his brother Dave turned out for the Blues, for whom Wayne Clarke scored the decisive goal. 1993 - We won the other derby match on this day in history, with Ronnie Rosenthal stealing victory with the only goal of the game in the final minute, so becoming the final sub to score in front of the standing Kop. This was also his 22nd and final reds goal. 1954 - Less impressively, a 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Anfield was our fourteenth consecutive League match without a win, with Eric Anderson nabbing our goal. Milestone games 1976 - Bob Paisley secured his fiftieth win as reds boss as David Fairclough grabbed the only goal of our League match at Norwich City. This was only Bob’s 101st game as Manager. 1964 – Ian Callaghan played his hundredth League game as we beat Bolton Wanderers 2-0 at Anfield thanks to goals from Alf Arrowsmith and Ian St. John. 1959 - Jimmy Melia struck twice with Louis Bimpson also netting as Stoke City won 4-3 in the Second Division at Anfield. Dick White headed into his own net as Dennis Wilshaw scored the last two of his seven strikes past us, with Bill Asprey also scoring as Ronnie Moran played his 200th reds game. 1926 – Forward Dick Forshaw struck his hundredth League goal for the reds as we lost 2-1 at Huddersfield Town. Future red Bill Devlin netted, with Clem Stephenson grabbing one of his five goals past us. Facing the Mackems 2011 – Dirk Kuyt converted from the spot after Jay Spearing was fouled outside the box at the Stadium of Light, with John Mensah later being sent off for Sunderland. Luis Suárez added a stunning second from a very tight angle to secure a 2-0 victory. 1982 – We beat Sunderland in a League match at Anfield, with Ian Rush bagging the only goal of the game and David Johnson making his 213rd and final reds appearance, as a substitute for Craig Johnston. Lightning strikes twice on Teesside 1915 - Walter Tinsley scored a hat-trick for Middlesbrough against the reds for the second successive season as we lost 3-0 at Ayresome Park. Centre-half Walter Wadsworth made his reds bow in this game, while inside-forward played his 63rd and last match for the reds. International goalscorers 1897 - Future reds inside-right Johnny Walker bagged his third and final international goal in only his second game for Scotland, as they drew 2-2 with Wales in the British International Championships in Wrexham. 1909 - Future red Billy Lacey scored his first goal for Ireland, and only one as an Everton player, in their 3-2 defeat by Wales in the British International Championships in Belfast. George Latham and Ernest Peake both played for the Welsh. 2019 – Ben Woodburn scored the only goal as Wales beat Trinidad & Tobago in a friendly in Wrexham, with future red Sepp van den Berg also on target for the Dutch Under-19’s as they beat Wales 2-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Hardenberg, his last goal as a PEC Zwolle player. Birth and death 1886 - Half-back Harry Lowe was born in Whitwell, Derbyshire. He notched twice in 136 games for the reds after signing from Gainsborough Trinity in May 1911. Unfortunately, he missed the 1914 FA Cup Final through injury, and he moved on to Nottingham Forest in March 1920. 2010 – Forward Ron Jones died. The start of it all 1892 - Everton voted to move from Anfield. John Houlding was therefore left with an empty ground, but no team to play in it. Signing on 1930 – Keeper Andrew Aitken signed from Wallsend. He only ever made one senior reds appearance, in our 3-3 draw at Blackburn Rovers in December of that year, returning to amateur football with Mickley in April 1931. 1934 – Left-back Ernie Blenkinsop signed from Sheffield Wednesday for £6,500, having already earned 26 England caps. He played 71 reds games without scoring. He moved on to Cardiff City in November 1937. 1938 – Left-half Jimmy McInnes signed from Third Lanark for £5,500. He struck once in 48 outings, joining the administrative staff after retiring from playing in 1946, taking over as Club Secretary in 1955. He became famous when he escaped from a prisoner-of-war camp in Italy, walking 400 miles to freedom despite a broken neck! 1928 - Keeper Dave Underwood was born in London. He signed from Watford for £7,000 in December 1953, playing fifty reds games before returning to Vicarage Road in July 1956. Dunlop tyred out 1905 - Left-back Billy Dunlop scored his third and final reds goal as we thumped Doncaster Rovers 4-1 at their Benetthorpe Ground in a Second Division fixture. Robert Robinson added a brace, with Jack Cox also on target. Fighting back 1939 – Portsmouth came back from 4-1 down with less than half an hour remaining to draw 4-4 in a top-flight match at Anfield. Phil Taylor bagged a brace with Willie Fagan and Berry Nieuwenhuys also netting before smog descended on the pitch. Parker struck his fifth and final goal against the reds, with Jock Anderson bagging the last of his four and Jimmy McAlinden and Bert Barlow also scoring for Pompey. Farewells to legends 1991 - Alan Hansen retired through injury. He had signed from Partick Thistle for £100,000 in May 1977 and made 620 reds appearances, notching fourteen times and helping us to claim three European Cups, eight League titles, two FA Cups, three League Cups and four FA Charity Shields. 2021 – Scottish forward Ian St. John died. He joined from his hometown club Motherwell in May 1961 for a then club record fee of £37,500. The Saint scored 118 goals in 425 games for the reds, including the winning goal in the 1965 FA Cup Final, also helping us to win two First Division titles, the Second Division and FA Charity Shield, before moving to South Africa in February 1971 to join Hellenic. Triple treble This day has brought three reds hat-tricks. 1902 - Sam Raybould netted a treble in our very first senior game on this day, a 4-0 home League win over Manchester City, with Jack Cox adding the other. 1930 - We faced City again, losing a top-flight encounter at Maine Road 4-3, with Jim Smith, Archie McPherson and Gordon Hodgson on the scoresheet. Reds farewells 1958 - Outside-right Brian Jackson played his 133rd and last reds game as we lost an FA Cup Sixth Round tie 2-1 at Blackburn Rovers, with Bobby Murdoch netting our goal. 1962 - Inside-right Fred Pagnam died. He signed for the reds from Blackpool in May 1914, and so could only bag thirty goals in 39 reds games before joining Arsenal in October 1919, with whom he kept up his remarkable strike-rate. Happy birthday Djimi 1980 - Djimi Traoré was born in Saint Ouen. He signed for the reds from Stade Lavallois Mayenne for just £550,000 in February 1999, and struck once in 141 reds games, helping us to claim the Champions League in 2005. He joined Charlton Athletic for £2m in August 2006, but moved on again just five months later, this time to Portsmouth, before returning to French football. Reds debutants 1989 - Mike Marsh made his reds debut in our 2-0 home League victory over Charlton Athletic, when Peter Beardsley struck for the first time in eighteen matches, later added to by a John Aldridge penalty past ex-reds reserves keeper Bob Bolder. Dixie dies 1980 – Legendary Blues forward Dixie Dean died from a heart attack after attending our 2-1 win at Goodison. Ex-Blue David Johnson scored, added to by a controversial Phil Neal penalty, with Peter Eastoe scoring one of his four goals against us. Ex-reds boss Bill Shankly was also in attendance at this match. Harry’s only strike 1913 – Forward Harry Welfare bagged his only reds goal in our 2-1 defeat of Derby County at Anfield, with Billy Lacey grabbing the other goal. Horace Barnes netted the first of his nine strikes past us. Peake’s debut 1909 - Ernest Peake won his first Welsh cap, alongside team-mate Maurice Parry, as they beat Scotland 3-2 in Wrexham in the British International Championships. England scorers off the mark 2006 - Peter Crouch struck his first goal for his country in England’s 2-1 friendly defeat of Uruguay at Anfield, with future red Joe Cole nabbing the other and Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard both also featuring. Crouch was wearing a shirt with the number twelve on the back but 21 on the front! 1967 - Tommy Smith bagged the first of his two goals for England Under-23’s, converting a penalty as they lost 3-1 to Scotland at St. James’ Park. Jari the record-breaker 2006 - Ex-red Jari Litmanen broke Finland’s all-time appearance record, overtaking Arj Hjelm, when he was captain as he won his 101st cap as Roy Hodgson’s side beat Belarus 5-4 on penalties after their Cyprus Tournament Third-place play-off had ended 2-2 in Larnaca. Sami Hyypiä was playing his 75th game for his country. In charge 1981 - Larry Lloyd was appointed Manager of basement side Wigan Athletic. He was in charge at Springfield Park for two years, leading them to promotion in his one full season in charge. 2006 - Steve Staunton took charge of his first game as Republic of Ireland Manager, guiding them to a 3-0 friendly defeat of Sweden at Lansdowne Road, with future red Robbie Keane on target. Other reds games 1975 – Chelsea held us to a 2-2 draw at Anfield as we fell behind to an Ian Britton strike before Steve Heighway equalised in the first half. Steve Finnieston scored the first of his four goals past us, but Peter Cormack nabbed a late leveller. 1969 – Our FA Cup Fifth Round tie at Leicester City ended goalless. The game had to be played on Sixth Round day following seven postponements due to the weather, but we lost the Anfield replay two days later. Fernando again 2010 - Fernando Torres retained the Liverpool Echo’s Sports Personality Of The Year award. Also in international friendly action 2006 - Paul Jones won his first cap as a Queens Park Rangers player and Craig Bellamy made his final appearance while with Blackburn Rovers as John Toshack’s Wales were held to a goalless draw by Paraguay at the Millennium Stadium. Fernando Morientes won his final cap as a reds player in Spain’s 3-2 defeat of the Ivory Coast, with Xabi Alonso, Luis García and future red Fernando Torres also playing. Dirk Kuyt struck for the last time as a Feyenoord player, notching the only goal as the Netherlands faced Ecuador in Amsterdam. Nicolas Anelka won his last cap as a Fenerbahçe Spor Kulübü player as future red Martin Škrtel’s Slovakia beat France 2-1 in the Stade de France, with fellow ex-red Alou Diarra also in action. He signed from Northampton Town for £66,000 in October 1974 and struck 59 times in 650 reds appearances, becoming our most decorated player of all time, with his medal haul including four European Cups, eight League titles, the UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, four League Cups and four FA Charity Shields. 1971 - Jari Litmanen was born in Lahti. He struck nine goals in 43 reds games after arriving for free from Barcelona in January 2001, before returning to his spiritual home with Ajax in Amsterdam on another free in August 2002. 1960 - David Speedie was born in Glenrothes, Fife. Kenny Dalglish signed him from Coventry City for £700,000 in January 1991. He netted eight times in fourteen reds games before moving to Blackburn Rovers seven months later. 1917 - Scottish inside-left Willie Fagan was born in Musselburgh, Midlothian. He arrived from Preston North End in October 1937 for £8,000, a record deal for a teenager, and netted 57 goals in 182 reds games, helping to fire us to the League title in 1947 and the FA Cup Final three years later. He finally left Anfield in January 1952 to join Belfast Distillery. 2001 – Academy forward Paul Glatzel was born in Liverpool. The FA Cup and King Kenny’s departure 1991 - One of the most amazing games in our history took place, an FA Cup Fifth Round replay with Everton at Goodison Park, in what was to be Kenny Dalglish’s last match in charge. We led four times, and four times we were pegged back, with the match ending 3-3 after ninety minutes and 4-4 after extra time, before we lost 1-0 at the same venue in the last ever second replay in the competition. Future Blue Peter Beardsley netted a brace, his final reds goals, with Ian Rush and John Barnes also scoring. Graeme Sharp struck the last two of his seven goals past us with Tony Cottee netting two of his eight. Meanwhile, Bruce Grobbelaar was making his 107th consecutive reds appearance, but missed our next game, a 3-1 League defeat at Luton Town. 1971 - Our top-flight meeting at Goodison also ended all square, with neither side scoring. 1946 – We thumped Everton 4-0 in Lancashire Senior Cup First Round second replay, thanks to goals from Billy Liddell, Willie Fagan, Jack Balmer and Phil Taylor. Divock Origi reached a century of League outings for the reds as a late substitute. Javier on his way 2007 - Javier Mascherano’s loan signing was approved by the Premier League. He settled into the red engine room with impressive speed, turning out on 139 occasions, finding the back of the net just twice before moving to Barcelona for €22m in August 2010. 1967 – Outside-right Dave Wilson signed from Preston North End for £20,000, having played in the FA Cup Final in 1964. Brighton were managed by former reds favourite Jimmy Melia, while Case had his named chanted by reds fans at the end of the game. On our way to Wembley 1965 – A late Ian Callaghan header handed us victory at Bolton Wanderers as we reached the Sixth Round of the FA Cup, en route to winning the trophy for the first time. The wooden railing behind the goal collapsed under the pressure of a crowd surge after our goal, but play was not stopped. Ironed out 1999 - We were held to a 2-2 draw at Anfield by West Ham United, with Robbie Fowler and Michael Owen bagging our goals as we were twice pegged back. Frank Lampard struck the first of his eight goals against the reds, with Marc Keller also netting. 1932 - We lost our previous meeting with the Hammers on this day 1-0 at Upton Park, when centre-forward Les Bruton made the first of his eight reds appearances and Jimmy Ruffell bagged the last of his four goals past us. Nice one Cyril, again 1943 - Cyril Done scored in his third consecutive game as we beat Manchester City 4-2 in a Wartime League game at Anfield. The tough defender bagged five goals in 737 reds appearances before retiring in the summer of 2013, leaving him second in the list for the club’s all-time appearance holders. He helped us to claim the European Cup, UEFA Cup, FA Cup, two UEFA Super Cups, two League Cups and two FA Charity/Community Shields. Souness steps down 1994 – Graeme Souness resigned as Manager, having been in charge since April 1991. He led us to the FA Cup in his first full season, his only trophy in three years in charge. Tosh departs 1973 - Forward Tosh Johnson died in Monsall Hospital in Manchester. He crossed the park in March 1934, having claimed the First and Second Division titles and FA Cup with the Blues, and netted eight times in 38 reds games before joining Darwen in August 1936. Bowyer’s last 1911 - Forward Sam Bowyer struck the final one of his sixteen reds goals, a last-minute equaliser as we were held 1-1 at Anfield by Manchester City in a top-flight encounter, with left-back Tom Rogers appearing for the fortieth and last time. Happy birthdays 1930 - Left-half Geoff Twentyman was born in Brampton. He netted nineteen times in 184 reds games after signing for £10,000 from his hometown club Carlisle United in December 1953. He returned to Anfield as Chief Scout in 1967, a post he held for nineteen years, helping to bring players such as Ray Clemence, Alan Hansen, Steve Heighway, Phil Neal and Ian Rush to the club. He died aged 74 in February 2004. 1969 - Steve Staunton was born in Drogheda. He arrived from Dundalk for £20,000 in September 1986, netting seven times in 148 reds appearances across his two spells at Anfield, helping us to our last League title in 1990, and the FA Cup a year earlier. 1913 – Irish reserves centre-half Matt O’Mahoney was born in Mullinavat, County Kilkenny. He was on our books in 1933 but failed to break through to the first team. He later turned out for Bristol Rovers and Ipswich Town, as well as representing his country. 1993 – Reserves forward Krisztián Adorján was born in Budapest. God’s despair 1994 - Robbie Fowler broke his ankle as we drew 1-1 in our rearranged FA Cup Third Round tie at Bristol City, and we lost the Anfield replay six days later. Ian Rush netted our goal at Ashton Gate. Jack’s treble 1907 - Jack Parkinson scored a hat-trick at Sunderland, with Sam Raybould and Jack Cox also on the scoresheet for the reds. Sunderland came back from 4-1 down at half-time to draw the game 5-5 as Arthur Hurdman nabbed a brace, with George Bridgett scoring one of his five goals past us. The reds felt hard done by as the referee, a last-minute replacement when the original official was caught up in fog on the way to the match, awarded the home side two penalties, both converted by Ernie Rhodes, one of which was a controversial award. Derby disappointment 2009 – Steven Gerrard skippered the club for the 250th time as we were held to a 1-1 League draw at Anfield by Everton, netting a 25-yard strike before Tim Cahill headed in a late equaliser from a free-kick, one of his five goals against the reds. Thumping the Canaries 1985 - Goals from John Wark, Kenny Dalglish and an Ian Rush brace sent Norwich City to a 4-0 defeat at Anfield. City went on to be relegated that season. Neil on the move 2006 - Neil Mellor joined Wigan Athletic on loan after six goals in 22 reds games. He struck in the last minutes of his debut to hand the Latics a 3-2 victory at Middlesbrough, failing to score again as he played another four times. He joined from Ajax in the summer of 2018, signing his first professional contract in July 2019. A win at last 2003 - We finally won a League game, after a run of eleven matches without tasting victory, with a superb performance at a rain-sodden Southampton. Emile Heskey’s first-half header was the highlight of a barnstorming performance. Most recently 2014 - We came back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Aston Villa at Anfield. Andreas Weimann scored before future red Christian Benteke grabbed one of his seven goals against us to date, with Daniel Sturridge pulling a goal back in first-half stoppage time. Steven Gerrard levelled from the spot. Through on penalties 1995 - We finally saw off Birmingham City in the replay of our FA Cup Third Round tie. Happy birthday Gary 1965 - Gary Ablett was born in Liverpool. He signed on at Anfield as a professional on his eighteenth birthday, going on to make 147 reds appearances, scoring just once – in only his second game. He helped us to two League titles, FA Cup and FA Charity Shield before being sold to Everton by Graeme Souness for £750,000 in January 1992, with whom he won a second FA Cup. He returned to the club in the summer of 2006 to take over as Reserve Team Manager, leading them to the national title in his second season, although he left at the end of the following campaign. He sadly died in January 2012, aged just 46. 1993 – Keeper Lawrence Vigouroux was born in Camden, north London. He left Tottenham Hotspur to join the reds in 2014, moving on to Swindon Town in July 2016 after a successful loan spell there. Staying put 2021 - Ex-Academy Coach Neil Critchley signed a new contract as Manager of Blackpool. He led them to a total of 45 wins in 109 games between being appointed in March 2020 and quitting in June 2022 to become Steven Gerrard’s Assistant at Aston Villa. In comes Chico 1981 - Steve Nicol signed from Ayr United for £300,000. He played 468 times across the defence and midfield, scoring 46 times and helping us to four League titles, European Cup, three FA Cups and an FA Charity Shield, as well as being named the Football Writers’ Player of the Year in 1989. He left the club to sign for Notts County on a free transfer in January 1995. 1983 – He grabbed his first reds goal, a late winner in our 1-0 League victory at Queens Park Rangers. Lawler leaves 1975 – Full-back Chris Lawler left the reds to join Portsmouth, then managed by Ian St. John. He signed pro terms on his seventeenth birthday in October 1960, striking 61 times in 549 reds appearances as he helped us to win two League titles, an FA Cup, UEFA Cup and FA Charity Shield. He later returned to the club in the 1980’s as Reserve Team Manager. Reds in Moscow 2002 - We became the first English team to beat Spartak Moskva on their own patch as we came from behind through a Michael Owen hat-trick of header, left-foot and right-foot shots handed us a 3-1 Champions League group win. Grégory Vignal suffered the rare indignity of coming on as a substitute, and then later himself being substituted. 1992 - David Burrows had to play the last six minutes of our European Cup Winners’ Cup game at the same club in goal, after Bruce Grobbelaar was sent off with the score at 2-2. We went on to lose 4-2, with Mark Wright and Steve McManaman having netted for the reds and Mark Walters hitting the post. Valeri Karpin bagged a brace, including one from the spot, with Nikolai Pisarev and Igor Lediakov also netting. In and out 1937 – Inside-left Willie Fagan signed from Preston North End for £8,000, a record deal for a teenager. He netted 57 goals in 182 reds games, helping to fire us to the League title in 1947 and the FA Cup Final three years later. He finally left Anfield in January 1952 to join Belfast Distillery. 1915 – Forward Bob McDougall left the reds to join Falkirk. He had signed from St. Cuthbert Wanderers in November 1913, netting once in eight outings. Most recently 2016 – Adam Lallana played his hundredth game for the club as we beat West Bromwich Albion 2-1 in a League encounter at Anfield. Sadio Mané and Philippe Coutinho put us two goals ahead at the break, with Gareth McAuley nabbing a late consolation for the Baggies. 2017 – We lost 4-1 to Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley Stadium in front of a ten Premier League record crowd of 80,827. Harry Kane and Heung-min Son scored early as we reached a thousand goals conceded in the Premier League, the latter with the first of his seven strikes against us. Mohamed Salah brought us back into the game, but Delle Alli netted on the stroke of half time to restore the home side’s two-goal lead, with Kane adding another of his nine goals past us after the break. 2022 – Ex-red Taiwo Awoniyi bagged the only goal of our League visit to Nottingham Forest. Robbie on target 2008 - Robbie Keane gave us the lead at Club Atlético de Madrid when we played at the Estadio Vicente Calderón in the group stage of the Champions League, with Simão Sabrosa netting a late equaliser to ensure we left with a share of the spoils. Rafael Benítez also rested Keane, Steven Gerrard and Xabi Alonso as the second half progressed. In the lead-up to the game, UEFA had originally decided that the match would have to be played in another city, due to crowd trouble at their previous game against Olympique de Marseille. Also recently 2015 – We were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Russian side Rubin Kazan in our UEFA Europa League group game. We came from behind with Emre Can netting our goal before the break in what was Jürgen Klopp’s first game at Anfield as Manager. Oleg Kuzmin was sent off for the visitors. 2011 – We were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by Norwich City. Ex-Canary Craig Bellamy opened the scoring on the stroke of half time, but Grant Holt equalised after an hour. Luis Suárez had eleven shots on goal as we failed to make our domination count. Doni’s day 1979 – Former substitute keeper Alexander Doni was born in Jundiaí, São Paulo. He arrived on a free transfer from Roma in July 2011 and played four senior games, as well as sitting on the bench on another 46 occasions before joining Botafogo in his native Brazil for free. He retired from playing in August 2013 after a series of heart problems. More births and a death 2009 – Full-back Ray Lambert died. He joined the reds when he was just thirteen and went on to make 341 first-team appearances, netting just twice, including being part of the 1947 title-winning side. He also won five caps for Wales. 1938 - George Gillett Jr. was born in Racine, Wisconsin. The then owner of the Montreal Canadiens ice hockey team brought fellow American Tom Hicks on board and took over the club in February 2007. He was eventually forced to sell up in October 2010. 1966 - Mark Seagraves was born in Bootle. He only made two reds appearances before joining Manchester City in September 1987. He was Reserve Team Coach at Derby County until December 2008, working with fellow ex-red Paul Jewell. 2004 – Spanish midfielder Stefan Bajčetić was born in Vigo. He arrived from Real Club Celta de Vigo for €250,000 in February 2021, debuting in our 9-0 trouncing of Bournemouth in August 2022. He struck once in nineteen senior outings in his breakthrough campaign. Merseyside rivalry on the international stage 1928 - Dixie Dean scored as England beat Elisha Scott’s Northern Ireland 2-1 at Goodison Park. He remains the most recent Everton scorer past a Liverpool goalkeeper at full international level. Future reds defenders Ernie Blenkinsop and Tom Cooper both lined up alongside Dean. Sir Roger for England 1966 - Roger Hunt netted as England won 2-0 in Northern Ireland in a European Championships qualifier, in a game that also counted towards the British International Championships. 2021 – Future red Trent Kone-Doherty struck for Republic of Ireland Under-16’s as they beat Northern Ireland 2-0 in a friendly in Lucan. Thousands of games 1955 - We played our 2,000th League game, winning our Second Division encounter at Bury 4-1, thanks to a brace apiece from Alan Arnell and Billy Liddell. 2006 - We deservedly lost 2-0 at Manchester United in what was our 5,000th official match, and Steven Gerrard’s 350th reds game. Paul Scholes and Rio Ferdinand struck the goals. 1927 – Right-half Jock McNab played his 200th League game for the reds as we lost 2-1 at Bolton Wanderers. Dick Edmed put us in front, but Harold Blackmore netted the first of his five goals against the reds and Ted Vizard also struck. Also in Europe 1975 - We won 3-1 at Real Sociedad in our UEFA Cup Second Round first leg encounter, with Steve Heighway, Ian Callaghan and Phil Thompson all on the scoresheet. This was an especially notable result as the Spanish outfit had been unbeaten at home in the League for the previous two years. Future Assistant Manager Pako Ayestarán attended this game with his mum, at the age of twelve. 1980 - Terry McDermott netted the only goal of the game inside five minutes at Alex Ferguson’s Aberdeen in our European Cup tie at the same stage. 2014 – We lost 3-0 to Real Madrid in our UEFA Champions League group game, our biggest ever home defeat in Europe. Heading for Olympic gold 1908 - Arthur Berry was in the United Kingdom side that thumped the Netherlands 4-0 in the Semi-final of the Olympics at White City Stadium. Another super win 2005 - We fell behind to a goal from CSKA Moskva’s Velizar Dimitrov in Monaco, but a brace from substitute Djibril Cissé and a Luis García strike secured us the UEFA Super Cup for the third time, 3-1 after extra time, as we reached a century of goals under the stewardship of Rafael Benítez. The cup was lifted by stand-in skipper Jamie Carragher. Danny’s wonder goal 2006 - Daniel Agger scored his first reds goal, a superb long-range effort to level the scores in our 2-1 home defeat of West Ham United after Bobby Zamora had put the Hammers ahead in our fiftieth League meeting at Anfield. Dirk Kuyt made his debut as a second-half substitute after Peter Crouch had handed us the lead on the stroke of half time. 1972 - We also entertained the Irons, winning 3-2. Bryan ‘Pop’ Robson bagged a brace for the visitors, two of his five goals against the reds, with the scores levelled by John Toshack and then a Bobby Ferguson own goal before Emlyn Hughes grabbed the winner. Most recently 2012 – We were held to a 2-2 draw at Anfield by the reigning champions Manchester City, with Lucas having to go off early with a thigh injury. He signed from his hometown club for £340 in May 1905 and helped us to our second League title in his first season, going on to make 240 appearances before joining Aston Villa for £1,500 in May 1912. 1888 – Defender Ernest Peake was born in Aberystwyth. He arrived as a Welsh international from his hometown club Aberystwyth Town in May 1908, netting six times in 55 games before joining Third Lanark in May 1914 1945 - Full-back Tom Lowry was born in Liverpool. He signed pro terms in April 1963 but only ever played one first-team game, when Bill Shankly fielded a team of eleven reserves in our League match at Wolverhampton Wanderers, which came only five days before the 1965 FA Cup Final. He moved on to Crewe Alexandra in June 1966, going on to set their club record of 436 League appearances that stands to this day. Hola and arrivederci 2007 – Argentine left-back Emiliano Insúa signed from Boca Juniors for £1.675m, having initially joined on loan seven months earlier. He made 62 senior appearances, netting his only goal in our Carling Cup defeat at Arsenal in October 2009. He joined Galatasaray on loan in August 2010, moving on to Sporting Clube de Portugal permanently a year later. 2011 - Alberto Aquilani joined AC Milan on loan, having spent the previous campaign with Juventus. He netted once in 25 games for the Rossoneri, before being sold to Fiorentina earlier this month. 2016 – Nigerian forward Taiwo Awoniyi joined Nijmegen Eendracht Combinatie on loan, scoring three times in 21 games. Other departures 1986 - Sammy Lee moved on to Queens Park Rangers after a fine career in the reds midfield, bagging nineteen goals in 295 games, helping us to two European Cups, four League titles, four League Cups and the FA Charity Shield. He returned as a coach in 1992, initially being put in charge of the reserves. He left the backroom staff in the summer of 2004 for a full-time post with England, before joining Bolton Wanderers, but returned to Anfield in May 2008 as Assistant Manager, staying in that role until June 2011. 1963 – Winger Kevin Lewis left the reds for Huddersfield Town. He played 82 reds games after signing from Sheffield United for a club record £13,000 in June 1960 as Bill Shankly’s second capture, helping us to the Second Division title and scoring an impressive 44 times. Turkish delight 2010 - We won 2-1 at Trabzonspor in the second leg of our UEFA Europa League Play-off, to reach the group stage 3-1 on aggregate as Roy Hodgson achieved his fourth straight European victory. Teófilo Gutiérrez netted for the home side early on, before a late Remzi Giray Kaçar own goal and Dirk Kuyt strike handed us victory on the night. Billy again 1959 – Billy Liddell bagged a brace in our 4-2 Second Division defeat of Bristol City at Anfield, thus scoring in his fifteenth consecutive season, a club record. Outside the Shankly Gates 1982 - Nessie Shankly officially opened the Shankly Gates at Anfield. Trebles all round 1967 - Tony Hateley scored a hat-trick, his first reds goals that included a penalty, in our 6-0 thumping of Newcastle United. Mickey’s milestones 2000 - Michael Owen netted his 49th and fiftieth League goals, in his 98th appearance, although we ended up drawing 3-3 with Southampton in our last game at The Dell, having led 3-0 with just seventeen minutes remaining. The brace took Owen to seven goals in as many games against the Saints. Sami Hyypiä grabbed our other goal. Marian Pahars netted twice with Tahar El Khalej also on target for the home side. Owen’s second strike was also the club’s 8,000th in all competitions. Digger’s ton 1995 - John Barnes’ second goal in our 3-1 win at Tottenham Hotspur was his hundredth reds strike, while Robbie Fowler netted his fiftieth reds goal. Off 2007 – Future red Christian Benteke was dismissed while playing for Belgium Under-17’s as they lost 2-0 to the USA in a World Championships Finals group game in South Korea. On the move 2021 – Midfielder Bobby Clark joined the reds from Newcastle United, signing pro terms the following February. The son of ex-Geordies midfielder Lee Clark, making his senior bow as a late substitute in our 9-0 thrashing of Bournemouth at Anfield in August 2022. 2016 – Diogo Jota joined Porto on loan from Club Atlético de Madrid. He struck nine times in 37 outings while back in Portugal. 2015 – Welsh winger Harry Wilson joined Crewe Alexandra on loan, going on to play seven times for the Alex. He had signed from Club Atlético Banfield for £2m just a year earlier and made only eight senior appearances, netting once. 2003 - Reserves keeper Pegguy Arphexad joined Gary McAllister’s Coventry City having been released by the reds the month before. He made just five appearances for the Sky Blues before his contract expired in July 2004. 1999 - Steve Harkness joined Blackburn Rovers from SL Benfica for £400,000, less than six months and nine League games after leaving Anfield for Portugal. He played 21 times in his one season at Ewood Park, before joining Sheffield Wednesday. 2008 – Ex-reserves defender Andrew Nicholas joined Rotherham United from Swindon Town on a free transfer. He played 37 times for the Millers before joining Barrow in 2010. 1994 - Former Under-13’s Coach Mike Sheron joined Norwich City from Manchester City for £1m, scoring seven times in 38 games before moving to Stoke City in October 1995. He made only twelve appearances for the U’s without scoring before joining Southampton in March 1982 for £80,000. Internationals on target 1997 - Future red Vladimír Šmicer scored as the Czech Republic lost 2-1 in a World Cup qualifier in Slovakia. 2015 – Adam Lewis scored for England Under-17’s as they beat Italy 3-0 in a friendly in Shropshire, with ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper in charge. God the father 1999 - Robbie Fowler’s future wife Kerrie gave birth to their first daughter, Madison, at Liverpool Women’s Hospital. Ged in charge 1992 - Gérard Houllier took charge of his first senior international game as France lost 2-0 to Brazil in a friendly in Paris, with future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel on the winning side. On the same day, future red Torben Piechnik won his first cap as a F.C. København player, as Denmark were held to a goalless draw in a World Cup qualifier in Latvia. Future reds Stig Inge Bjørnebye, Jari Litmanen and Øyvind Leonhardsen also played for their countries that day. The greatest performance ever 1988 - We trounced Nottingham Forest 5-0, just four days after we had beaten them 2-1 in the FA Cup Semi-final. It was a stunning display that the legendary Tom Finney described as “the greatest performance ever”. John Aldridge bagged a brace, to add to goals from Ray Houghton, Gary Gillespie and Peter Beardsley. Bruce Grobbelaar was playing his 400th reds game. 1929 - We also netted five, winning 5-2 at Derby County, with Henry Race and John Clark both bagging braces, and Gordon Hodgson also on the scoresheet. Harry Bedford struck two of his nine goals against the reds. Heading towards Istanbul 2005 - Xabi Alonso returned after his broken ankle suffered on New Year’s Day, with Djibril Cissé making an even more amazing comeback from injury, to help the reds secure a battling goalless draw at Juventus to reach the Semi-final of the Champions League, our first last-four appearance in Europe’s premier club competition for two decades. Semi-final draws 1985 - Manchester United held us to a 2-2 draw at Goodison Park after extra time, before beating us in the replay, and then subsequently winning the FA Cup Final itself. Ronnie Whelan and substitute Paul Walsh grabbed our late equalisers at the end of normal and extra time, respectively after Bryan Robson, with one of his seven goals past us, and Frank Stapleton had twice put the Red Devils ahead. 1963 - We also faced United, with Ian St. John bagging the only goal of this top-flight meeting at Anfield. This was the first game Gerry Byrne had missed since October 1960, in which time he had made 117 consecutive appearances. 1992 - We won the first ever FA Cup Semi-final to be decided on penalties. After a goalless two hours of the replay at Villa Park, we beat Portsmouth 3-1 in the penalty shoot-out, with John Barnes and Ian Rush converting before Dean Saunders netted the decisive kick, with Pompey missing the target with three of their spot-kicks. Ronnie Moran took charge of the reds following Graeme Souness’s recent triple heart bypass surgery. Jordan off 2014 - We beat Manchester City 3-2 at Anfield, our tenth straight League win, with Raheem Sterling and Martin Škrtel putting us two goals ahead inside the first half hour. However, the visitors drew level through David Silva and a Glen Johnson own goal after the break before Philippe Coutinho pounced on a Vincent Kompany error to secure the victory and our place at the top of the table. This was our 93rd League goal of the season, a new club record in the top flight. Unfortunately, Jordan Henderson was sent off late on and we then proceeded to finish second in the table. 1901 – We beat City 3-1 in another top-flight encounter at Anfield, with Tommy Robertson bagging a brace in his hundredth League outing for the reds, with Jack Cox also on target. Legendary outside-right Billy Meredith scored for the visitors. Bobby’s half century 2022 – Roberto Firmino played his fiftieth game in the UEFA Champions League for the reds, bagging a brace as we were held to a 3-3 draw at Anfield by SL Benfica, to reach the Semi-finals 6-4 on aggregate. Ibrahima Konaté headed in the opener, but Gonçalo Ramos equalised before the break. Firmino put us two goals in front, before Roman Yaremchuk and future red Darwin Núñez struck for the visitors. Firsts and lasts 1998 - David Thompson scored his first senior reds goal, a late winner as we beat Crystal Palace 2-1 at Anfield in the Premiership. This was our hundredth goal from a substitute, while Øyvind Leonhardsen had opened the scoring before Marcus Bent equalised for the Eagles. 1935 – Centre-forward Fred Howe bagged the first of his 36 reds goals in our 4-2 defeat at Aston Villa, with Berry Nieuwenhuys also on target. Moussa Sissoko was sent off late on for the visitors. Leeds goals galore 2001 - Our Champions League hopes were dented on Good Friday by a 2-1 home defeat by Leeds United. However, Steven Gerrard did score our hundredth goal of the season, before being sent off, and we went on to clinch the crucial third spot at the end of the season. Rio Ferdinand and Lee Bowyer had put the visitors two goals in front. 1991 - Lee Chapman scored three of his six goals against the reds as we won 5-4 under Ronnie Moran at Leeds United, having led 4-0 after half an hour. Andriy Voronin added a late third, before Roque Santa Cruz grabbed an injury-time consolation. 1936 - We thumped Rovers 4-1 in a top-flight meeting at Anfield, with Berry Nieuwenhuys grabbing a brace, and Vic Wright and Phil Taylor also getting on the scoresheet. Reds farewells 1912 – Centre-half Jimmy Harrop made his 139th and final reds appearance in our 1-1 draw at Newcastle United, with inside-right Jimmy Stewart on target and Billy Hibbert netting one of his thirteen goals against the reds. 1914 – Outside-right Arthur Goddard played his 414th and last reds game while defender Ernest Peake appeared for the 55th and final time as we lost 1-0 in another top-flight fixture at Bradford City, with keeper Ken Campbell putting through his own net. Sunderland seen off three times 2002 - We kept up the pressure on Arsenal at the top of the table, as Michael Owen’s 25th goal of the season gave us a 1-0 win at Sunderland, a result that guaranteed us a top-four finish, at least, for the second successive season. Claudio Reyna was sent off in the dying seconds in front of a record Stadium of Light attendance of 48,355. Derby disappointment 1940 – We lost our Lancashire Senior Cup Semi-final 4-1 at Goodison, with Berry Nieuwenhuys bagging our consolation. 1906 - Alf West struck his sixth and last goal for the club from the spot as we were held to a 1-1 draw in a First Division derby at Anfield, with Jack Taylor on target for the Blues, the last of his five goals past us. 1900 - Tom Robertson netted our consolation in a 3-1 friendly defeat across the park. This game was played in front of less than 1,000 supporters, while the reserves were being watched by around 15,000 at Anfield in a Lancashire Combination game. Four-ton Emlyn 1974 – Emlyn Hughes played his 400th reds game, netting as we drew 1-1 at Ipswich Town. Trevor Whymark struck the first of his six goals past us. Beating the Potters We have twice beaten Stoke City at Anfield on this day in history. 1982 - Alan Kennedy and Craig Johnston bagged first-half goals as we won a First Division fixture 2-0. 1946 - Bob Priday nabbed a brace with Willie Fagan and Jack Balmer also on target in a 4-1 Wartime League victory. Bennett again 1918 – Thomas Green scored a hat-trick as we won 4-1 at Stockport County in a Wartime League game, with forward Thomas Bennett scoring in his third consecutive reds game. Happy birthdays 2001 – Right-back Neco Williams was born in Wrexham, making 33 senior appearances before moving on to Nottingham Forest for a reported £17m in July 2022, leaving with a Premier League title winner’s medal. 1996 - Midfielder Marko Grujić was born in Belgrade. He signed from Crvena Zvezda for £5.1m in January 2016, immediately being loaned back for the rest of the season. He struck once in sixteen senior appearances before moving to Porto for £10.5m in July 2021 after a successful loan spell. 1991 – Ex-reserves forward David Amoo was born in Southwark, London. He made his reds bow as a substitute in our UEFA Europa League qualifier at Rabotnički Skopje in July 2010, moving on to Preston North End in July 2012 after several loan spells away from Anfield. 1920 - Joe Cadden was born in Glasgow. The Scottish centre-half was signed after impressing for Brooklyn Wanderers on the reds’ US tour in 1948. However, his form back across the pond was less impressive, as he only made five first-team appearances before joining Grimsby Town in July 1952. 1871 – Scottish outside-right Neil Kerr was born in Bowling, Dunbartonshire. He signed from Rangers in June 1894, netting three times in twelve games before moving to Nottingham Forest the following year. Done deal 1926 - Right-back Bob Done signed professional terms, having arrived as an amateur from Runcorn two months earlier. He struck thirteen times in 155 reds games, moving on to Reading for £150 in May 1935. Robert’s bow 1907 - Birkenhead-born Robert Blanthorne made the first of just two senior reds appearances as we lost 4-2 to Bristol City at Anfield. Bill McPherson and Sam Raybould struck our goals as Billy Maxwell netted the last two of his six goals past us. Future red Sam Gilligan scored one of his five goals against the reds, with Fred Connelly also on the scoresheet. Other reds games 2013 – We were held to a goalless draw at Reading. 1957 – We lost a Second Division encounter 3-0 at Sheffield United. Jimmy Hagan scored the last of his five goals against the reds, with Bobby Howitt and John Spencer also scoring. 1925 – Donald McKinlay struck the only goal of our visit to West Ham United. Conor the champion 2009 – Conor Coady won his fourth and final cap for England Under-16’s as they won the Montaigu Tournament by beating Germany 2-1 on penalties after a goalless Final. Young Stewart off the mark 1988 - Paul Stewart, then still with Manchester City, netted on his debut for England Under-21’s as they lost 4-2 in France in their European Championships Semi-final first leg. On the move 1999 - Reserves keeper Tony Warner joined Aberdeen on loan. He played six times before moving permanently to Millwall that summer. 2004 - Ex-red Jari Litmanen signed for Lahti. He only remained there for nine months before joining Hansa Rostock in Germany. 2017 – Ex-reds midfielder Mohamed Sissoko signed for Mitra Kukar, netting five times in 26 League games during his eight months in Indonesia.
