Cup number ten 2024 – We won the League Cup for the tenth time after beating Chelsea 1-0 after extra time at Wembley. We were forced into an early change when Ryan Gravenberch was injured, before ex-red Raheem Sterling had a goal ruled out for offside. Cody Gakpo hit the woodwork before skipper Virgil van Dijk had a goal chalked off for another offside. The reds on the field became progressively younger as substitutes were made, with van Dijk heading in a very late winner as penalties loomed. This was the first time we had used six substitutions in a game, with an additional one permitted in extra time. The start of another treble 2001 - We won the Worthington Cup in the first domestic final to be played outside England, at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium. We beat Birmingham City 5-4 on penalties after the match had ended 1-1 to secure Gérard Houllier's first trophy. Who could forget witnessing Jamie Carragher striding forward to bury our fifth spot-kick, before Sander Westerveld saved the decisive penalty from future Blue Andrew Johnson? Robbie Fowler had opened the scoring, before a late Darren Purse penalty took the game into extra time. On the same day, future red Ragnar Klavan played for Estonia Under-17’s with ex-red Rigobert Song featuring for Cameroon in a World Cup qualifier. On our way to Wembley 1987 - We made it through to the Littlewoods Challenge Cup Final, as the League Cup was then known, by beating Southampton 3-0 in the Semi-final second leg at Anfield. Nigel Spackman made his reds bow, while Ronnie Whelan, Kenny Dalglish and Jan Mølby were all on target in the second half. A real victory 2009 – Yossi Benayoun headed the only goal of our Champions League round of sixteen first leg match at Real Madrid. On the same day, future red Danny Wilson played for Scotland Under-19’s in their 3-2 friendly defeat in France. Souey off the mark at Anfield 1978 - Graeme Souness scored his first reds goal in a 3-1 home League win over Manchester United. His stunning left-foot volley was later voted as the BBC’s Goal Of The Season. Ray Kennedy and Jimmy Case netted our other goals. Stevie passes Alan 2010 – Bruno Fernandes headed Unirea Urziceni in front in our UEFA Europa League round of 32 second leg in Bucharest before we came back to win 3-1, with Daniel Agger playing his hundredth reds game. Javier Mascherano equalised with his first reds strike before Ryan Babel put us ahead on the night. Steven Gerrard completed the scoring with his 33rd goal in continental competition to surpass Alan Shearer as Britain’s all-time leading scorer in European football. 2016 – James Milner’s early penalty was enough to secure victory over Augsburg 1907 e. V. in the second leg of our UEFA Europa League Round of 32 tie, as we went all the way to the Final in Basel that season. Portuguese midfielder João Teixeira played his eighth and last reds game. Naby’s farewell 2023 – Midfielder Naby Keïta made his 129th and last appearance for the club as we were held to a goalless draw by Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. Diogo Jota, Mohamed Salah and the Eagles’ Jean-Philippe Mateta all struck the woodwork. Management birthdays 1911 - Manager Don Welsh was born in Manchester. He had guested for the reds during the Second World War, and later took charge at Anfield for 232 games over five years during the 1950’s. He has the indignity of being our first Manager to be sacked, in May 1956, after presiding over our relegation from the top flight in 1954, before failing to lead us back to the promised land. 1967 – Former First Team Coach Kevin Keen was born in Amersham. He was appointed in July 2011, joining from West Ham United before moving on in June 2012. Other reds birthdays 1993 – Reserves centre-half and skipper Conor Coady was born in Liverpool. He made just two senior appearances before being sold to Huddersfield Town for £375,000 in August 2014. 1952 - John McLaughlin was born in Liverpool. The midfielder only made 55 appearances in his six years at Anfield, after signing professional terms on his seventeenth birthday, bagging three goals. His best season came in 1970/71, but a lack of first-team opportunities following injury led to a loan move to Portsmouth during 1975/76 before he moved into non-League football with Barrow. 1925 - Forward Sammy Smyth was born in Belfast. He bagged twenty goals in 44 reds games after signing from Stoke City for £12,000 in December 1952. He returned to his homeland to sign for Bangor City in January 1955. Anfield trebles 1922 - Dick Forshaw netted a hat-trick in a 4-0 League defeat of Arsenal, with his last goal coming in injury time. Our other strike was a Rob Turnbull own goal, while forward Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers played his hundredth reds game. 1895 - We conceded four goals to Woolwich Arsenal in a friendly at their Manor Ground as we lost 4-3, with Tom Bradshaw, Neil Kerr and Jimmy Ross netting for the reds. 1928 - Legendary striker Dixie Dean grabbed all three Everton goals in a 3-3 League draw at Anfield. Fred Hopkin, Tom Bromilow and Gordon Hodgson netted our goals. On the same day, Elisha Scott played in goal for Northern Ireland as they beat Scotland 1-0 in a British International Championships game in Glasgow. Zico off target at Anfield 1984 - Phil Neal had a last-minute penalty saved by Queens Park Rangers’ keeper Peter Hucker, the fourth of his last six spot-kicks he had failed to convert. Ian Rush and Michael Robinson were on target in a 2-0 win. On the move 2007 - The free transfer signing of Andriy Voronin from Bayer 04 Leverkusen was confirmed for the following July. He bagged six goals in forty first-team appearances, but was sold to Dinamo Moskva for £1.8m in January 2010. 1994 – Keeper Mark Gayle joined on loan from Crewe Alexandra. He sat on the bench three times before returning to Gresty Road. 1950 - Defender George Whitworth signed for the reds from Stanton Ironworks. He only ever made nine senior appearances in three years at Anfield. 2013 – Ex-reserves forward Lauri Dalla Valle joined Norwegian side Molde from Fulham, for whom he played four times without notching, moving to Belgium to join Koninklijke Sint-Truidense Voetbalvereniging in July 2013. Thumping the Hammers on the way to South London 1914 - We beat West Ham United 5-1 at Anfield in an FA Cup Third Round replay as we headed towards our first ever Final, which was to be played at Crystal Palace. Billy Lacey and Tom Miller both grabbed braces, with Arthur Metcalf also on target and Syd Puddefoot bagging the first of his six goals past us. 1956 - We faced the Hammers again, going down 2-0 in a Second Division fixture at Upton Park thanks to own goals from left-half Geoff Twentyman and right-back John Molyneux. Tons up 1905 – Centre-half Alex Raisbeck played his 200th reds game as Jack Parkinson nabbed the only goal of our Second Division visit to Grimsby Town. 1967 – We drew 2-2 at Fulham with Les Barrett giving the Cottagers a half-time lead. Ian St. John scored his hundredth goal for the club before Geoff Strong put us in front, but we succumbed to a last-minute Ron Yeats own goal. Jerzy’s Polish bow 1998 - Feyenoord’s Jerzy Dudek made his full international debut for Poland as a substitute in their 2-0 friendly defeat by Israel in Tel-Aviv. Reds on target for their countries 1998 - Vegard Heggem bagged his only Norway goal while winning his first cap, and only one as a Rosenborg BK player, as they drew 3-3 with France in a friendly in Marseille. Future clubmate Stig Inge Bjørnebye also played, while Auxerre’s Bernard Diomède played for the French. 1981 - Kenny Dalglish netted the only goal of Scotland’s World Cup qualifier in Israel, who included Avi Cohen. Graeme Souness and future red John Wark both also played. 2011 – Future red Samed Yeşil netted as Germany Under-17’s beat England 3-1 in the Algarve Tournament. Keeper Tyrell Belford made his debut at this level, with Jack Dunn, Matty Regan and future red Emre Can all also in action. 2023 - Keyrol Figueroa scored in his fourth consecutive game for the USA Under-17’s as they beat Canada 2-0 in their CONCACAF Championship Finals Semi-final in Guatemala. Young future reds at Anfield 1981 - Everton’s Steve McMahon won his first England Under-21’s cap, alongside Middlesbrough pair David Hodgson and Craig Johnston, as they beat the Republic of Ireland 1-0 in a friendly at Anfield. This was Skippy’s second and final cap at this level. Other reds games 1995 – We came from behind to win 2-1 at Sheffield Wednesday thanks to goals from John Barnes and Steve McManaman. 1961 – We beat Lincoln City 2-0 in a Second Division encounter at Anfield with Johnny Morrissey and Kevin Lewis on target. 1950 – Middlesbrough thumped the reds 4-1 at Ayresome Park as Peter McKennan struck either side of an Albert Stubbins header. Alex McCrae and Geoff Walker both struck late on to secure the victory. 1939 – Wolverhampton Wanderers left L4 with a 2-0 victory. Dennis Westcott scored one of his nine goals past us, with Dickie Dorsett bagging one of his four. 1933 – We lost 2-1 at Portsmouth as Sep Rutherford scored either side of Harold Barton’s goal. 1899 – We won 2-0 at West Bromwich Albion in an FA Cup Third Round tie, with Hugh Morgan and Tommy Robertson both netting after the break. We made it as far as the Semi-final that season. Pepe the dad 2007 - Pepe Reina became a father for the first time, to a girl called Grecia. Joey’s last as a Robin 1975 - Joey Jones won his third cap for Wales Under-23’s, and last as a Wrexham player, as they beat Scotland 2-0 at the Vetch Field. Also in international action 1934 - Ex-red Jimmy Kelly played for the Irish Free State as they were held to a 4-4 draw by Belgium in a World Cup qualifier in Dublin. 1970 – Emlyn Hughes featured in England’s 3-1 friendly win in Belgium. 1986 – Ian Rush played as Wales won a friendly 2-1 in Saudi Arabia. 1995 – Future red Haukur Ingi Guðnason featured as Iceland Under-17’s lost 2-0 to the host nation in the Portugal Tournament. 1999 – Future red Milan Baroš played for the Czech Republic Under-18’s in their 2-0 friendly defeat in Greece. -
Happy birthdays 1934 - Left-winger Alan A’Court was born in Rainhill. He signed for free from Prescot Cables in September 1952 and scored 63 times in 381 reds games, helping us to the Second Division title in 1962, as well as representing England at the 1958 World Cup in his time at Anfield. He left to join Tranmere Rovers in October 1964. 1949 - Forward Alun Evans was born in Bewdley, near Kidderminster. He was Britain’s first £100,000 teenager when he signed from Wolverhampton Wanderers in September 1968, our new record signing. He scored 33 goals in 111 reds games, including appearing in the 1971 FA Cup Final, before being sold to Aston Villa for £70,000 in June 1972. 1911 - Forward Harold Barton was born in Leigh in Lancashire. He signed for free from Whitegate Juniors in November 1928, and famously bagged a treble in our 7-4 derby win at Anfield in February 1933, netting a total of 29 goals in 109 reds games before joining Sheffield United in June 1934. 1994 – Young full-back Ryan McLaughlin was born in Belfast. He played his first game for the first team against Roma in Boston in July 2012, but moved on to Oldham Athletic in August 2016 having been released without making a senior appearance. 1998 – South African winger Bob Priday died. His chances were limited to forty reds games after he made the switch from Cape Town City in December 1945, as he was behind Billy Liddell in the pecking order. He notched seven times while at Anfield, before moving on to Blackburn Rovers in March 1949. Another trophy in the cabinet 1986 - We beat Everton 4-1 at Goodison Park to claim the Screen Sport Super Cup, thanks to a 7-2 aggregate scoreline. Ian Rush bagged a treble, with Steve Nicol also netting that night and Graeme Sharp striking a late consolation, one of his seven derby goals. Mark Lawrenson was making his 300th reds appearance. Rushie off the mark 1981 - Substitute Ian Rush scored his first reds goal as we beat Finnish champions Oulun Palloseura 7-0 in a European Cup First Round fixture, to progress 8-0 on aggregate. A minute’s silence was held before the game, in remembrance of Bill Shankly’s death the day before. Kenny Dalglish opened the scoring with a diving header, our hundredth European Cup goal. Terry McDermott bagged a brace with Ray Kennedy, David Johnson and sub Mark Lawrenson all also on target, the latter with his first reds strike. Anfield trebles 1975 - John Toshack bagged a treble of headers as we beat Hibernian 3-1 in the second leg of our UEFA Cup First Round tie, to progress 3-2 on aggregate. Winger Alex Edwards netted Hibs’ consolation. 1978 - Jimmy Case netted all the goals in our 3-0 League defeat of Bolton Wanderers, although the game was somewhat spoiled by a smoke bomb that was thrown from the Anny Road end into the Bolton goal area. Kenny Dalglish was stand-in captain in the absence of Emlyn Hughes. 1950 - We hosted the Trotters in another top-flight match, with Jack Balmer netting twice and Jimmy Payne also on target as we drew 3-3. Nat Lofthouse struck one of his eight goals against the reds, with Willie Moir scoring one of his five past us and Harry Webster also on the scoresheet. Catalogue of errors in north London 2023 – We lost 2-1 at Tottenham Hotspur in a game marred by VAR errors. Luis Diaz had a perfectly legitimate goal disallowed for a non-existent offside before Curtis Jones was harshly sent off. Son Heung-min put the home side in front, the sixth of his seven goals past us to date, but Cody Gakpo levelled in first-half stoppage time. Diogo Jota as also dismissed after the break, with this later being ruled as an incorrect decision, with Spurs claiming victory thanks to an injury-time Joël Matip own goal. Nous sommes les champions du monde 2001 - Anthony Le Tallec and Florent Sinama-Pongolle both netted for the French Under-17’s in their 3-0 defeat of Nigeria in the Final of the World Championships in Trinidad. 2016 – Future red Dominik Szoboszlai scored from the spot while captaining Hungary Under-17’s as they beat Denmark 3-1 in a European Championships qualifier. On the same day, ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper took charge of England Under-17’s as they beat Greece 3-0 in a friendly in Croatia, with Rhian Brewster featuring. Perfect start ends 1893 - We dropped our first point in the Football League as we were held 1-1 by Notts County at Trent Bridge, after winning our first four games. Hugh McQueen was on target for the reds. Red centurions 1972 – Left-back Alec Lindsay played his hundredth reds game as we won 2-1 at Leeds United. Mick Jones but the home side in front with one of his seven strikes past us, before Larry Lloyd and Phil Boersma secured the points. 1967 – We beat Stoke City 2-1 at Anfield with Peter Dobing opening the scoring with one of his eight goals against the reds. Peter Thompson netted, with Tommy Smith scoring the winner from the spot as Ron Yeats played his 300th reds game. Off to a winning start 1911 - Left-back Bob Pursell made his reds bow in our 2-1 win at Sunderland. Other European fixtures 2010 – We held Utrecht to a dour goalless draw in our UEFA Europa League encounter in the Netherlands. 1997 - We drew 0-0 at home with Celtic, although this was still enough to take us through to the Second Round of the UEFA Cup on the away goals rule. 1969 - We won 4-0 at Dundalk, thanks to a Peter Thompson brace and goals from Bobby Graham and Ian Callaghan, to go through to the Second Round of the Fairs Cup, as we blooded youngsters including Phil Boersma, Ray Clemence and Larry Lloyd. Cally’s goal was our first European strike from a substitute, after he had replaced Peter Thompson at half time. Mixed derby fortunes 1933 - We beat the Blues 3-2 at Anfield, with Berry Nieuwenhuys scoring his first reds goal. Alf Hanson, Sam English scored, with future red Tommy Johnson nabbing the last of his eight goals against us, with Tommy White netting the last of his four goals past us. 1905 - We lost 4-2 at Goodison in another top-flight encounter, with Joe Hewitt netting both our goals. Jimmy Settle struck one of his eleven goals against us, with Walter Abbott, Harold Hardman and Jack Sharp all also on target as left-back David Murray played his fifteenth and last reds game. For Rab 1904 - A testimonial match for right-half Rab Howell was staged at Anfield. John Carlin netted both goals as we drew 2-2 with Preston North End. He was the only true Romany to play for England and played 67 reds games without scoring between April 1898 and June 1901, but was forced to retire after breaking his leg while a Preston player. 1901 – We beat the Lillywhites 2-1 in a Lancashire Senior Cup game at Anfield, thanks to goals from Andy McGuigan and Sam Raybould. 1929 – We won 2-0 in a Second Round tie in the same competition at Anfield, with Gordon Hodgson bagging a brace. Representing the League 1912 - Winger Arthur Goddard and full-back Ephraim Longworth both played for the Football League in their 2-1 defeat of a Southern League team at Old Trafford. Twice each against the Lancastrian rivals We have twice faced both Blackburn Rovers and Burnley on this day in history, winning just once. 1899 - We lost 2-0 at Ewood Park in a First Division meeting with Rovers 1922 – We lost by the same score at Turf Moor, with forward Dick Forshaw playing his hundredth League game for the club. 1939 - Phil Taylor struck twice with Jack Balmer, Willie Fagan and Berry Nieuwenhuys also netting as we triumphed 5-0 in a friendly at Blackburn. 1916 - The other game was a goalless Wartime League match against the Clarets at Anfield. Beaten at the Reebok 2006 - We lost 2-0 at Bolton Wanderers, with the home side opening the scoring from a free-kick incorrectly awarded against Pepe Reina for handball. The reds also hit the post through Xabi Alonso, with Gary Speed and Iván Campo on target for the home side. First cap 2012 - Future red Marko Grujić won his only Under-17's cap as Serbia trounced Belarus 7-0 in a friendly in Borisov. Signing on 2008 – Finnish reserves forward Lauri Dalla Valle signed professional terms. He made just one senior appearance before moving to Fulham in August 2010 as part of the deal that brought left-back Paul Konchesky to Anfield. 1971 - Keeper Frank Lane signed from Tranmere Rovers for £15,000, but only made two first-team appearances, deputising for Ray Clemence. Unfortunately, he distinguished himself for all the wrong reasons on his debut in September 1972 by safely catching a deep cross from Derby County’s Alan Hinton and then stepping backwards over his own goal-line, to help us on our way to a 2-1 defeat. Loaned out 2011 - Jonjo Shelvey joined Blackpool on a temporary basis, netting six times in ten outings before being recalled two months later. 2004 - Reserves defender Jon Otsemobor joined Crewe Alexandra on loan. He played fifteen times for the Alex before returning to Anfield. He later returned to Gresty Road after a brief spell with Rotherham United. All change 1985 - Future reds winger Jimmy Carter joined Queens Park Rangers from Crystal Palace on a free transfer. He did not make the first team at Loftus Road, moving on to Millwall for £15,000 in March 1987. 1998 - Former youth winger Stuart Quinn, who featured in our victorious FA Youth Cup campaign in 1996, signed for Southport from Altrincham. He only made three appearances for the Haig Avenue side. 1994 - Ex-loanee keeper Mark Prudhoe joined Peterborough United on loan from Stoke City, playing six times for the Posh. Youngsters on target 2006 - Future red András Simon netted for Hungary Under-17’s as they beat Bulgaria 3-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Armenia. 2005 – Future reds loanee Nuri Şahin struck as Turkey Under-17’s lost their World Cup Semi-final 4-3 to Brazil in Peru. Other reds games 2001 – John Arne Riise and Danny Murphy netted as we won 2-0 at Newcastle United. 1961 – We thumped Charlton Athletic 4-0 in a Second Division encounter at The Valley. Roger Hunt bagged a brace, with Kevin Lewis and Ian St. John also on target. 1895 – We beat Burton Wanderers 4-1 in a Second Division meeting in L4 with Harry Bradshaw and Frank Becton each netting twice. Also in international action 2009 – Keeper Dean Bouzanis played for Australia Under-20’s as they lost 3-0 to Costa Rica in the World Championship Finals in Egypt, while Péter Gulácsi and András Simon both featured as Hungary thumped South Africa 4-0. 2018 – Ki-Jana Hoever played for the Dutch Under-17’s in their 6-0 thumping of Montenegro in a European Championships qualifier in Sweden. 2022 - Darwin Núñez scored his first goal as a reds player as Uruguay beat Canada 2-0 in a friendly in Slovakia. Also in action were James Balagizi, Owen Beck, Alisson Becker, Conor Bradley, Luke Chambers, Luis Díaz, Harvey Elliott, Melkamu Frauendorf, Lee Jonas, Diogo Jota, Isaac Mabaya, Kostas Tsimikas, ex-reds Rhian Brewster, Steven Caulker, Sadio Mané, Takumi Minamino, Xherdan Shaqiri and Luis Suárez, and future reds Wataru Endō and Alexis Mac Allister, with Steve Clarke and Rigobert Song both taking charge of their countries. -
Happy birthday Mr. Kennedy 1954 - Alan Kennedy was born in Sunderland. He is best remembered for his winning strikes in two European Cup Finals, but also won five League titles, four League Cups and three FA Charity Shields after moving from Newcastle United for £330,000 in August 1978, making 359 appearances and notching twenty times before joining his hometown club for £100,000 in September 1985. 1911 - Frank O’Donnell was born in Buckhaven, Fife. He struck once in two Wartime appearances for the reds. He gained six Scotland caps as well as scoring for Preston North End in every round of the FA Cup in 1937, including the Final. 1990 – Scottish reserves midfielder Gary Mackay-Steven was born in Thurso. He joined the reds in 2007 but failed to break through before being released two years later. 2006 – Forward Keyrol Figueroa was born in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. He signed pro terms with the reds in May 2024 and represents the USA at Under-17’s level even though his father was a senior international with Honduras. Happy birthday Pepe 1982 - Keeper Pepe Reina was born in Madrid. He arrived from Villarreal for £6m in July 2005, keeping a remarkable 177 clean sheets in his 394 games and helping us to claim the FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FA Charity Shield before moving to Bayern München for £2m in August 2014 after spending the previous campaign on loan at SSC Napoli. Farewell to a legend 1960 - Billy Liddell played his 534th and final reds game as we lost 1-0 to Southampton in a Second Division fixture at Anfield. Right-half Gordon Milne made his reds debut in the same game. 1994 - We also faced Southampton, winning 2-0 with John Barnes and Robbie Fowler on target at The Dell. Bruce Grobbelaar and former reds reserve Jim Magilton both featured for the home side. 1968 – Tony Hateley played his 56th and last reds game in our 1-0 defeat at Leeds United, with Mick Jones netting one of his seven goals past us. Keepers on the move 2002 - We signed two goalkeepers on transfer deadline day as Gérard Houllier lost faith with incumbent Sander Westerveld. Jerzy Dudek signed from Feyenoord for £4.85m, while Chris Kirkland arrived from Coventry City for £6m. Dudek played 186 reds games, with Kirkland making 45 appearances. On the same day, defender Djimi Traoré joined French side Racing Club de Lens on loan for the rest of the season. 2004 - Sander Westerveld joined Real Club Deportivo Mallorca on loan from Real Sociedad. He played six League games for the island side. 2009 - Charles Itandje joined Greek side A.O. Kavala on loan, where he played nineteen League games that season. Late winner 2022 - Alexander Isak netted on his debut for Newcastle United, having a second strike ruled out for offside before Roberto Firmino equalised at Anfield after an hour. Fábio Carvalho nabbed a very late winner during a scramble from a corner. In comes the Ox 2017 – Midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain signed from Arsenal for £35m, scoring eighteen times in 146 games before moving on in the summer of 2023. He made it back from serious injury to sit on the bench as we claimed the UEFA Champions League in Madrid in June 2019 and then helped us to claim the Premier League, FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup. On the same day, forward Divock Origi joined VfL Wolfsburg on loan, for whom he struck six times in 34 outings. Meanwhile, centre-half Mamadou Sakho was sold to Crystal Palace for an initial £24m after a successful loan spell, and Brazilian midfielder Allan Rodrigues de Souza joined Apollon Limassol on loan. David’s debut 2008 - David N’Gog made his reds bow as a substitute for the injured Fernando Torres as we held Aston Villa to a goalless draw in our Premiership meeting in the Midlands, with Robbie Keane again drawing a blank. Latest moves 2021 – Midfielder Jake Cain joined Newport County on loan, winger Sheyi Ojo moved to Millwall for the season, while winger Luis Longstaff headed north to Queen’s Park for the upcoming campaign. On the same day, centre-half Rhys Williams signed a new contract and then moved on to Swansea City on loan. Forwards in and out 1935 - Jack Balmer signed as an amateur from Everton, turning professional three months later. He went on to score 110 times in 309 games, helping us to the League title in 1947. It was during that season that he netted hat-tricks in three consecutive games, a remarkable feat that has yet to be matched in English top-flight football. He also played in the FA Cup Final three years later. 1923 - Jack Sambrook moved on to Stockport County having played just twice after signing from Wolverhampton Wanderers in April 1922. Pepe the best again 2008 - Pepe Reina was awarded the Barclays Golden Glove Award for most clean sheets for the third successive season, having kept eighteen shut-outs in the League. Most recently 2011 – We lost 2-0 at home to Tottenham Hotspur to damage our hopes of qualifying for Europe. Spurs took an early lead when Rafael van der Vaart’s strike deflected in off Glen Johnson, with Luka Modrić converting a controversial second-half penalty. 2016 – We drew 1-1 at West Bromwich Albion, with winger Sergi Canos making his only senior reds appearance. Midfielder Cameron Brannagan, winger Jordon Ibe, centre-half Martin Škrtel and left-back Brad Smith all played their last games for the club. Ibe struck our goal as we finished the League season in eighth, our joint lowest placing since returning to the top flight in 1962. This game came just three days before the UEFA Europa League Final against Sevilla in Basel. 2023 – We won 3-0 at Leicester City as Curtis Jones bagged a first-half brace. Trent Alexander-Arnold added the third, with Mohamed Salah assisting all three goals as Fábio Carvalho appeared for the 21st and final time. Happy birthdays 1981 – Left-back Paul Konchesky was born in Barking. Roy Hodgson paid £3.5m for him on transfer deadline day in August 2010, as well as transferring Lauri Dalla Valle and Alex Kačaniklić to Fulham as part of the deal, who were valued at a combined £1.5m. He made eighteen reds appearances without scoring, being sold to Leicester City in July 2011 for £1.5m after spending the second half of the season on loan at Nottingham Forest. 1901 - Forward Jimmy Walsh was born in Stockport. He signed from his hometown club in May 1922 and netted a brace on his reds bow, bagging a total of 27 goals in his 77 reds games before joining Hull City in June 1928. 1985 - Former reserves centre-back Carl Medjani was born in Lyon. The highly-rated Frenchman signed from Saint-Étienne on a free transfer in August 2003 but failed to break through into the senior squad, moving back to France to join Lorient in July 2006 after a loan spell there. 1976 – Winger Mark Kennedy was born in Dublin. He signed from Millwall for £1.5m in March 1995 but only played 21 times for us, before being sold to Wimbledon for £1.75m three years later. 1979 - Forward Sean Friars was born in Derry. He never made our first team, moving on to Ipswich Town in 1998. Last game before Istanbul 2005 - Argentinean centre-back Mauricio Pellegrino played his thirteenth and final reds game as we beat Aston Villa 2-1 at Anfield in our final League game of the season, to finish behind our neighbours in fifth. Djibril Cissé struck a brace, including a penalty, with Gareth Barry on target for the Villains with the first of his four goals against the reds to date. Igor Bišcan also made his final reds outing as he played his 118th reds game, with Dietmar Hamann turning out for the reds on the 250th occasion. Midfielder Antonio Núñez also appeared for the last time, just his 27th outing. International debutants 1946 - Billy Liddell made his international bow as Scotland beat Switzerland 3-1 in a Victory International at Hampden Park. 1955 - He also played for his country as they drew a friendly 2-2 in Yugoslavia. Future red Tommy Younger was in the Scots’ goal that day. 2008 - Jack Hobbs won his first cap for England Under-19’s, playing alongside clubmate Adam Hammill as they lost 2-0 to Russia in a European Championships qualifier in Walsall. 2009 – Christopher Buchtmann played for Germany Under-17’s as they reached the Final of the European Championships by beating Italy 2-0 in Dessau. Double trebles 1946 - Jack Balmer bagged four goals and Cyril Done scored a hat-trick as we thumped Baltimore All Stars 9-0 in an end-of-season friendly at the Municipal Stadium in Baltimore. Willie Fagan added a brace. 1943 - Jack Balmer also struck three times as we drew the second leg of the Lancashire Cup Final 3-3 with Manchester United at Maine Road, to lose 6-4 on aggregate. Holding on 1920 – We retained the Lancashire Senior Cup, sharing the trophy after the Final at Anfield ended 1-1 after extra time against Manchester United. Tom Miller scored for the reds. King Kenny against Clem 1976 - Kenny Dalglish scored through the legs of his future clubmate Ray Clemence as Scotland beat England 2-1 in the British International Championships at Hampden Park. Kevin Keegan, Ray Kennedy and Phil Thompson all also played. Sami in charge 2012 - Sami Hyypiä was appointed Team Manager of Bayer 04 Leverkusen on a permanent basis after a successful temporary period in charge. He stayed in charge until being sacked in April 2014. A busy day 2002 - Danny Murphy signed a new five-year contract. Meanwhile, Stéphane Henchoz was named Swiss Player of the Year, for the second consecutive season. On the same day, our Under-19’s won 3-2 at Highbury in the second leg of the FA Premier Academy League Play-Off Final, but it was not enough to overturn a 5-1 first leg defeat. Also, ex-red Mike Marsh signed for Accrington Stanley from Boston United on a free transfer. He spent one season there, helping them to the UniBond Premier League, and promotion to the Conference, before becoming Manager at Burscough, back in the UniBond. Tosh for Wales 1971 - John Toshack won his first cap as a red, and ninth in total, as Wales were held to a goalless draw by Scotland in the British International Championships in Cardiff, with future red Peter Cormack featuring for the Scots. 1973 - He also turned out for the Welsh in the same competition, as they lost 3-0 to England at Wembley. Clubmate Emlyn Hughes was on the winning side that day. 1974 - Crazy Horse also featured for England, skippering them to a 1-0 defeat of Northern Ireland at Wembley in the same competition, with Kevin Keegan also playing. At Hampden 2002 - Ex-red Steve McManaman and future red Fernando Morientes both played in the UEFA Champions League Final for Real Madrid as they beat Bayer 04 Leverkusen 2-1 at Hampden Park. Dan’s happy day 2010 – Centre-half Daniel Agger married Sophie Nelson in Hvidovre in his native Denmark. Internationals on target 2019 – Future red Darwin Núñez struck for Uruguay Under-20’s beat Spain 2-1 in a friendly in Poland. 2011 – Samed Yeşil netted as Germany Under-17’s lost 5-2 to the Netherlands in the European Championships Final in Serbia, with fellow future red Emre Can also playing. 1983 – Future reds centre-half Glenn Hysén scored as Sweden thumped Cyprus 5-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Malmö. In and out 2006 - Ex-reds reserves forward Jon Newby was released by Bury, after five goals in 51 appearances in his second spell at Gigg Lane. On the same day, centre-half James Smith singed pro terms with the reds. His solitary senior appearance was in a League Cup tie at Reading in October 2006, moving on to Stockport County in December 2007 on a free transfer, after a successful loan spell. Marina honoured 2009 - Kenny Dalglish’s wife Marina was awarded the Citizens of Honour award by Liverpool’s Lord Mayor, which was collected on her behalf by Kenny as she was ill. Finishing third 1968 – We ended the season with a 2-1 loss at Stoke City to finish in third place. Ged’s return 2002 - A famous night in Anfield history came as we defeated Roma 2-0 to qualify for the Quarter-finals of the Champions League in our first season in the current format of the competition. Jari Litmanen’s penalty and an Emile Heskey header ensured we did not miss the injured Michael Owen or suspended Didi Hamann. The night was made complete by the emotional return of Gérard Houllier to the dug-out after heart surgery. Another win in the North East 2006 - We won 3-1 at Newcastle United as we played with three centre-backs and two wing-backs for the first time under Rafael Benítez. Peter Crouch and Steven Gerrard struck in the first half before Djibril Cissé converted a penalty after Jean-Alain Boumsong was sent off for bringing down Crouch. Our French striker enraged the home fans who accused him of ‘over-celebrating’ after his goal. 1904 - We visited St. James’ Park for another top-flight meeting, with Arthur Goddard on target in a 1-1 draw. Happy birthdays 1981 – Centre-back Kolo Touré was born in Bouaké in the Ivory Coast. He arrived on a free transfer from Manchester City in July 2013, netting once in 71 reds games before being released in July 2016. 1982 – Substitute keeper Brad Jones was born in Armadale, Australia. He signed from Middlesbrough for £2.3m in August 2010, making 27 senior appearances before being released in June 2015. 1966 - Nigel Clough was born in Sunderland. He netted nine times in 44 reds games after signing from Nottingham Forest for £2,275,000 in June 1993, without making the expected impact at Anfield. He is now Manager of Derby County, after a successful spell in charge of non-league Burton Albion. The secretary made a good start 1938 - We won 3-1 at Brentford in a Second Division match, with Arthur Riley saving a penalty from Bobby Reid. Left-half Jimmy McInnes scored his only reds goal on his debut, with Jack Balmer and Alf Hanson also netting. McInnes only played 48 times for us, and was the club’s Secretary between 1955 and 1965, before hanging himself from the turnstile area of the Kop four days after our first ever FA Cup Final win. United beaten 1995 - We defeated Manchester United 2-0 in the League at Anfield, thanks to a Steve Bruce own goal, the second he had netted for us after a previous one while with Norwich City, and a sweet strike from Jamie Redknapp who was reaching a century of League outings for the reds. This result helped ensure United were denied a third consecutive League title that season. Most recently 2017 – We drew 1-1 at Manchester City, with ex-City player James Milner putting us in front from the spot before Sergio Agüero struck one of his seven goals past us. Signing on 1935 - Centre-forward Fred Howe joined on a free transfer from Hyde United. He struck 36 times in 94 outings before joining Manchester City in June 1938. He netted three reds trebles, including notching four times in our record 6-0 derby victory at Anfield in September 1935. 1934 – Left-half John Browning signed from Dunoon Athletic. He made just nineteen appearances before moving on to Southern League side Gillingham in August 1939. First and last 1898 - Wing-half Charlie Wilson made his reds bow as Bolton Wanderers held us to a 1-1 draw at Anfield, with Harry Bradshaw striking his 53rd and final reds goal and forward Pat Finnerhan playing his eighth and last game for the club. Wilson joined the backroom team in 1905, staying on staff until the Second World War. 1955 – Lincoln City won 4-2 at Anfield in the Second Division as centre-half Fred Tomley played his second and last reds game. Billy Liddell scored from the spot but Fred Tomley headed into his own net and Fred Middleton converted a penalty to give the Imps a half-time lead. Bob Gibson bagged a brace before Liddell scored again. Heading towards Wembley 1977 - We beat Middlesbrough 2-0 at Anfield in the Sixth Round of the FA Cup as we headed towards another Final. David Fairclough and Kevin Keegan struck the goals. 1921 - We also faced Boro, with Harry Chambers grabbing the only goal of our top-flight meeting at Ayresome Park from the spot. On the same day, the fourth of five FA Cup Semi-finals to be staged at Anfield took place, with losing Finalists Wolverhampton Wanderers sharing a goalless draw with Cardiff City. Derby stalemates We have twice played out goalless top-flight draws with Everton on this day in history 1966 – Both sides drew blanks at Goodison, with Chris Lawler reaching a century of reds games. 1983 – Another meeting ended without score at Anfield as Graeme Souness played his 200th League game for the reds. Up against Rovers We have twice faced Blackburn Rovers in First Division fixtures on this day. 1927 - Harry Chambers and Tommy Reid were on target in a 2-2 draw at Anfield. Morgan’s first 1898 - Future red Hugh Morgan made his debut for Scotland as they thumped Wales 5-2 in the British International Championships at Fir Park. This was his only cap as a St. Mirren player. Chmabers for England 1923 - Harry Chambers was on target as England thrashed Belgium 6-1 in a friendly at Highbury. Fellow reds Tom Bromilow and Ephraim Longworth also featured. Yet another draw 1975 - We were held for the sixth consecutive League game, this time 1-1 at Leicester City with John Toshack notching our goal, while midfielder Peter Cormack was playing his hundredth League game for the reds. On the move 1987 - Future red Paul Stewart joined Manchester City from Blackpool for £200,000. He bagged an impressive thirty goals in 63 games, before moving to Tottenham Hotspur for £1.7m in June 1988. 2004 - Andy Parkinson, who was in the victorious FA Youth Cup squad in 1996, rejoined Notts County on loan from Sheffield United. He played nine times in this spell. 2012 – Former reserves forward Lauri Dalla Valle joined Exeter City on loan from Fulham, playing five times without notching. 2013 – Ex-reds forward Michael Owen announced he would retire from playing at the end of the season, with his career having stalled at Stoke City. Beginning and end 1941 – Winger Jackie Sheldon died. He grabbed twenty goals in 147 reds games after joining from Manchester United in November 1913, playing in our first ever FA Cup Final in 1914. He retired in 1922 after breaking his leg, with his name forever tainted by being the go-between in our match-fixing scandal with Manchester United in April 1915. 2011 - Lucas Leiva became a father for the first time, to Pedro. Other reds games 1994 – We beat Chelsea 2-1 at Anfield. Ian Rush put is front before Craig Burley headed into his own net and then pulled a goal back for the visitors. 1980 – We defeated Leeds United 3-0 in L4 as David Johnson struck either side of an Alan Kennedy goal to extend our lead over Manchester United at the top of the table to six points. 1960 – Huddersfield Town held us to a 2-2 draw at home in a Second Division encounter. Dave Hickson and Johnny Wheeler put us two goals ahead after sixteen minutes, with Billy Liddell having struck the ball so hard after just four minutes that it had burst! Liddell’s second-half penalty hit the post and was cleared away. Kevin McHale and Chris Balderstone then scored to level the match. 1949 – We lost 2-1 at Charlton Athletic with Jack Balmer giving the reds a half-time lead. Charlie Vaughan scored one of his four goals against the reds, with Chris Duffy netting the winner. 1924 – We beat Sunderland 4-2 in L4. Harry Chambers scored with Donald McKinlay netting twice before Billy Hogg bagged the last two of his five goals past us, all before half time. Danny Shone completed the scoring, with Elisha Scott saving a penalty from Billy Ellis in the last minute. 1910 – We won 2-1 at Bury. Sam Bowyer and Arthur Goddard both scored in the opening half hour, but Billy Hibbert grabbed one of his thirteen goals past us late on. The scoring was completed in injury time by Álvaro Arbeloa, who struck his second and final goal for the club. 1947 - Grimsby Town lost 3-1 at Anfield in a top-flight encounter with Kevin Baron notching his first reds goal, and Albert Stubbins and Bob Priday also on the scoresheet. Coady starts out 2012 – Midfielder Conor Coady made his reds bow as we lost 1-0 to the wealthy Anji Makhachkala in a UEFA Europa League group game in Moscow. Dani Pacheco came off the bench for his seventeenth and last appearance for the club, with centre-forward Adam Morgan playing for the third and final time. Lacina Traoré netted on the stroke of half time past Brad Jones. 2015 – We lost 2-1 at home to Crystal Palace as Steven Gerrard watched from the stands for the first time since leaving for LA Galaxy, with Philippe Coutinho equalising after Yannick Bolasie had given the Eagles the lead. Scott Dann headed in a late winner for the visitors, with boss Jürgen Klopp saying he felt “pretty alone” as the goal led to a mass crowd exodus. Hitting Spurs for four 1997 - Second-half goals from Steve McManaman, Øyvind Leonhardsen, Jamie Redknapp and substitute Michael Owen gave us a 4-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield, with the latter netting his first in L4. Robbie Fowler was playing his 200th reds game with Jason McAteer reaching a century of outings for the club, while beleaguered Spurs boss Gerry Francis was greeted with chants of “we want our Tottenham back”. 1952 - In fact, we have only lost one of our sixteen first-class games on this day over the years, 3-2 at Charlton Athletic. Our goals came from Bryan Williams and outside-left Ken Brierley, who were both on target for the last time. Billy Kiernan bagged the last two of his five goals against the reds, with future red John Evans netting one of his five goals past us. 1980 - Our goalless draw at home to Nottingham Forest was our fifth consecutive League stalemate that season. Happy birthdays 1981 - Joe Cole was born in Islington, London. He notched just five times in 42 reds outings after joining on a free transfer from Chelsea in July 2010, spending a season on loan at Lille OSC Métropole before returning to West Ham United for free in January 2013. He signed as a professional with the Hammers on his seventeenth birthday, on the Upton Park pitch prior to a game against Chelsea, with the stadium announcer somewhat excitedly saying, “you can tell your grandchildren you were here when Joe Cole signed”. 1999 – Left-back Adam Lewis was born in Liverpool. He made his senior bow in the FA Cup Fourth Round replay defeat of Shrewsbury Town at Anfield in February 2020, spending much of his time out on loan to date. 1918 – Forward John Shafto was born in Humshaugh. He signed from Hexham in November 1936, netting seven times in twenty outings before war intervened. Facing the Mancs 1975 - We saw off Manchester United 3-1 thanks to Steve Heighway’s fiftieth reds strike and goals from John Toshack and Kevin Keegan, with Steve Coppell netting for the visitors. The Anny Road end was separated by a metal divide for this game to give away fans their own section, following trouble at a previous match with United. One of the club’s senior directors said that their fans had achieved something Hitler’s bombers had failed to do – change Anfield. 2020 – Mohamed Salah put the reds in front from the spot as we drew 1-1 behind closed doors at Manchester City, with Gabriel Jesus equalising with one of his six goals past us before Kevin De Bruyne missed a penalty. Gordon’s century 1930 – Forward Gordon Hodgson scored his hundredth League goal for the reds in our 2-2 top-flight draw at Derby County. Archie McPherson also netted, with Harry Bedford bagging the last of his nine strikes past us and George Stephenson scoring one of his four. Tommy’s farewell 1971 - Reds keeper Tommy Lawrence moved over the water to join Tranmere Rovers. The ‘flying pig’ had kept goal on 390 occasions since signing on as a professional back in October 1957, helping us to claim two League titles, the FA Charity Shield and the club’s first ever FA Cup. New technology 2014 – Chelsea won 2-1 in L4 with Emre Can opening the scoring with a deflected strike that was his first goal for the club. Gary Cahill’s equaliser was the first goal to be given at Anfield using goal-line technology. Diego Costa bagged the second-half winner, although we were denied a strong late penalty claim for handball. Zico the boss 1996 - Phil Neal was appointed Manager of First Division Manchester City. He was in charge for less than two months, leading them to just two wins in his ten games in charge, before being replaced by ex-Nottingham Forest boss Frank Clark. Top of the table 1986 - We climbed to the summit of the First Division for the first time that season when goals from Ian Rush, Steve Nicol and Craig Johnston secured a 3-1 victory at Queens Park Rangers as Nicol reached a century of League outings for the reds. Bells foiled 2006 - Struggling striker Craig Bellamy had a weak penalty saved as we won a League Cup Fourth Round tie at Birmingham City, with Daniel Agger grabbing the only goal of the game. Unfortunately, the night was marred by a shoulder injury suffered by Momo Sissoko. In comes Lauri 2007 – Sixteen-year old Finnish forward Lauri Dalla Valle signed from Joensuun Iloiset Peli-Pojat for a reported £600,000, going on to sign a professional contract with the reds in September 2008. He moved to Fulham in August 2010 after just one brief substitute appearance as part of the deal that brought left-back Paul Konchesky to Anfield. Future reds on the move 1983 - Future reds keeper Mike Hooper signed for his hometown club Bristol City on a free transfer from non-League Mangotsfield. He only made three first-team appearances in three seasons at Ashton Gate, moving on to Wrexham in July 1985. 1994 - Øyvind Leonhardsen joined Wimbledon from Rosenborg BK for £650,000. He had struck twenty times in 63 League games for the perpetual Norwegian champions, spending three successful seasons with Wimbledon before joining the reds. On the same day, David Thompson officially signed for the reds as a professional. Another title 2009 - Liverpool and Adrian Valles won the 2009 Superleague Formula motor racing championship at Jarama in Spain. Internationals on target 1961 - Ian St. John bagged a brace on his tenth full international appearance as Scotland beat Wales 2-0 at Hampden Park in the British International Championships. 2017 – Bobby Duncan came off the bench to score for England Under-17’s as they beat Portugal 3-2 in a friendly in Chesterfield, with Curtis Jones also featuring with ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper in charge. He arrived on a free transfer from Sheffield Victoria in March 1935 and helped us to claim the first post-war League title in 1947, making a total of 63 first-team appearances without notching. He moved on to Sunderland in March 1948. 1963 - Former reds loanee keeper Mark Prudhoe was born in Washington in Tyne & Wear. He joined Southend United on a free transfer from Bradford City on his 36th birthday. He remained at Roots Hall for a year, making just six appearances before being released. Other reds games 1969 – Wolverhampton Wanderers held us to a goalless draw at Anfield. 1919 – Harry Chambers and Billy Lacey netted as we won 2-1 at Bradford Park Avenue. 1913 – Burnley held us to a 1-1 draw in L4. Bertie Freeman scored one of his nine goals against the reds with Lacey levelling. Signing on 2016 - Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kevin Stewart and Ben Woodburn all signed new contracts. Stewart left the club for Hull City for a reported £6m in July 2017 after twenty senior reds games. Alexander-Arnold has netted ninteen times in 310 outings across his first eight seasons, with Woodburn notching once in eleven first-team appearances as he became our youngest ever scorer aged seventeen years and 45 days, moving on to Preston North End in July 2022. Abel return 2006 - Abel Xavier re-signed for Middlesbrough. He was sacked by them ten months earlier after being found guilty of breaching UEFA’s anti-doping regulations. Happy birthdays 1971 - Full-back Rob Jones was born in Wrexham. The grandson of post-war utility man Bill Jones, he signed from Crewe Alexandra for £300,000 in October 1991 and played 243 times for the reds without ever getting on the scoresheet, before injury ended his career. He helped us to win the FA Cup and Coca Cola Cup in his eight years at Anfield. 1911 - Outside-right Berry Nieuwenhuys was born in Kroonstad in South Africa. He signed from Germiston Calies in September 1933 and struck 79 times in 257 reds games, helping us to the League title in 1947 before joining Arsenal later that year. He in fact scored on his 27th birthday as we drew 1-1 at Portsmouth, with Jock Anderson bagging one of his four goals against the reds as keeper Arthur Riley played his 300th League game for us. 1886 – Forward Herbert Leavey was born in Guildford. He signed from Plymouth Argyle in June 1910, only making five appearances before joining Barnsley in August 1911. Red milestones 2005 - Steven Gerrard played his 300th reds game, converting a late penalty with Xabi Alonso then also scoring as we won 2-0 at Aston Villa. 2023 – Luton Town became the reds’ fiftieth different Premier League opponent as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Kenilworth Road. Tahith Chong put the Hatters in front late on, but Luis Díaz headed in a stoppage-time leveller. He had come off the bench, having been absent for the previous two matches while coping with his father’s kidnapping back in Colombia. First ever defeat 1892 - We registered our first ever competitive defeat as we lost 3-0 to Blackpool in the Lancashire League at their Raikes Hall Gardens ground. 1904 - We beat the Seasiders by the same score with Bobby Robinson netting a brace and Jack Parkinson also on target at Bloomfield Road. This was the sixth consecutive game in which Robinson had scored, in which time he had struck a total of ten times. Rushie back in action 1988 - Ian Rush scored his first goal since his return from Juventus as we beat newly promoted Middlesbrough 3-0 at Anfield to remain in fourth spot. John Aldridge and Peter Beardsley were also on target. 1910 - Sam Bowyer and Arthur Goddard struck as we left Ayresome Park with a top-flight point. George Elliott netted one of his eight goals against the reds, with Samuel McClure also on target. On the way to Gay Paree 1980 - We thumped Alex Ferguson’s Aberdeen 4-0 at Anfield to progress to the Third Round of the European Cup 5-0 on aggregate. We scored through a Willie Miller own goal, Phil Neal, Kenny Dalglish’s header and Alan Hansen. Our next opponents were Bulgarians CSKA Sofia the following March. Most recently 2019 – Gini Wijnaldum opened the scoring as we beat Koninklijke Racing Club Genk 2-1 in a UEFA Champions League group game at Anfield. Mbwana Samatta headed in an equaliser before the break, but Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain secured victory in the second half. 2015 – Jordon Ibe struck the first of his four reds goals as we won 1-0 at Rubin Kazan in a UEFA Europa League group game. 2011 – Pepe Reina kept his 150th reds clean sheet as we were held to a goalless draw at Anfield by Brendan Rodgers’ Swansea City, with Andy Carroll striking the crossbar early on. First and last 1932 - Forward Harold Taylor made the first of his 72 reds appearances as Leeds United’s Harry Duggan struck the only goal of our First Division encounter at Anfield, the first of his five goals against us. 1898 – Right-winger Bobby Marshall played his 21st and final reds game as we lost 3-0 at Newcastle United. Jock Peddie netted the first two of his five goals past the reds, with Sandy MacFarlane also on target. A rare defeat 1977 - We lost one of just eleven home League games throughout the whole of the 1970’s when Aston Villa won 2-1, with the reds benefiting from a Frank Carrodus own goal. Jimmy Case played his hundredth reds game, with Andy Gray bagging a brace for the visitors, the last of his four goals against us. Out of Europe 1974 - We returned from Hungary with a goalless draw after our European Cup Winners’ Cup Second Round meeting with Ferencvárosi, with two penalty shouts on Ray Kennedy waved away. Unfortunately, the 1-1 score from the Anfield first leg put us out on the away goals rule. Tommy Smith was later fined and given a European ban for allegedly feigning injury after a bottle was thrown onto the pitch late on. Devlin’s last 1927 – Centre-forward Willie Devlin grabbed his fifteenth and final reds goal as we drew a top-flight meeting 1-1 at Cardiff City. Shanks the boss 1956 - Bill Shankly was appointed Manager of Huddersfield Town. He led them to 49 wins in 129 League games in charge but could not get them out of the Second Division. He resigned after three years in the job to take over at Anfield, and the rest is history! An unhappy millennium 1955 - We lost 2-1 at Swansea Town in a Second Division fixture with Alan Arnell on target. This was our 1,000th away League game and Don Welsh’s 200th game in charge of the reds. Len Allchurch struck one of his five goals against the reds, with Terry Medwin also netting. Beating Forest twice We have twice entertained Nottingham Forest on this day in history, winning both encounters. 1994 - Robbie Fowler grabbed the only goal of the game. 1966 - Roger Hunt struck twice as we triumphed 4-0, with Geoff Strong and Peter Thompson also on target. Thumping wins We have twice more won League matches 4-0 on this day in history. 1949 - We beat Manchester City in a First Division meeting at Anfield to send us to the top of the table, with Billy Liddell bagging a brace, including a penalty, and Kevin Baron and Ken Brierley on target. 1960 - Roger Hunt struck twice as we won a Second Division match at Plymouth Argyle’s Home Park, with Alan A’Court and Dave Hickson also on the scoresheet. Hodgson for the League 1930 - Gordon Hodgson scored for the Football League in their 7-3 defeat of a Scottish League side at White Hart Lane. Launches 2009 - Jamie Carragher officially launched his charity, The 23 Foundation. It was to benefit by more than £1m from his testimonial the following year. On the same day, the club announced an exclusive agreement with Halliwell Jones BMW to become its Official Supplier of motor vehicles. Raheem’s bow 2009 – Future red Raheem Sterling made his debut for England Under-16’s from the bench as they beat Northern Ireland 2-0 in a Victory Shield match at the Deva Stadium. On the move 2004 – Keeper Brad Jones re-joined Blackpool on loan from Middlesbrough, playing twelve times in this second spell. 2012 – Ex-reds reserves forward Lauri Dalla Valle joined Crewe Alexandra on loan from Fulham, netting five times in twelve outings. 2018 – Former First Team Coach Paco Herrera had his contract as Manager of Aris Thessaloniki terminated by mutual consent, after six months in charge. -
A legend departs 1978 - Ian Callaghan signed for Swansea City on a free transfer. He had helped us to five League titles, two FA Cups, one European Cup, two UEFA Cups, UEFA Super Cup and three FA Charity Shields, as well as winning the Football Writers’ Player of the Year award in 1973/74. He remains the player with the record number of reds appearances, with an amazing 857 outings, during which time he bagged 68 goals. New boss 1918 - George Patterson was appointed as the club’s Secretary, having been Tom Watson’s deputy for a decade. He returned to more administrative duties in December 1919 after just eighteen games in charge, although he then became Secretary/Manager in March 1928, remaining in charge in this second spell until August 1936. Into Europe 1964 - Bobby Graham struck on his reds debut in the first European game at Anfield, as we beat Iceland’s Knattspyrnufélag Reykjavíkur 6-1 in our European Cup preliminary round encounter, to progress 11-1 on aggregate. Ian St. John netted a brace with Gerry Byrne, Roger Hunt and Willie Stevenson scoring the other goals, while Alan A’Court was playing his 381st and final reds game. Yet another win 2019 – The reds won a club record fourteenth League game in a row when we beat Newcastle United 3-1 at Anfield. Jetro Willems put the visitors in front early on, but Sadio Mané’s brace gave us a half-time lead. Mohamed Salah completed the scoring after the break. Other goalscoring debuts 2002 - Milan Baroš netted his first two reds goals on his League debut as we won 3-2 at Bolton Wanderers. Emile Heskey grabbed a late winner to prevent us falling to our fourth consecutive 2-2 draw after Ivan Campo’s late equaliser. Ricardo Gardner had also struck for the home side as we secured our first victory at the Reebok. 1946 - Albert Stubbins scored on his reds bow as we won 3-1, again at Bolton. He arrived from Joensuun Iloiset Peli-Pojat for a reported £600,000 in November 2007, signing professional terms with the reds in September 2008. He moved to Fulham in August 2010 after just one brief substitute appearance, as part of the deal that brought left-back Paul Konchesky to Anfield. A new scout 1999 - It was announced that Alex Miller, then Scotland’s Assistant Manager, had joined the club as a scout, to work alongside Ron Yeats. He later became First Team Coach under Rafael Benítez, but left to manage JEF United Ichihara Chiba in Japan, although he lost his job there in July 2009. Sinama on target 2001 - Florent Sinama-Pongolle scored in France Under-17’s 2-1 defeat by Nigeria in the World Championship Finals in the Dwight Yorke Stadium in Tobago, while Anthony Le Tallec also played. The French won their final two group games to progress, eventually going on to claim the title. A first for Rushie 1988 - Ian Rush won his first cap in his second spell as a reds player as Wales lost 1-0 in a World Cup qualifier in the Netherlands. Future reds strike partner Dean Saunders also played. Red legends are born 1893 - Legendary keeper Elisha Scott was born in Belfast. He kept goal for the reds on 468 occasions across his 21 years with us after signing from Broadway United in September 1912, and ended his career with two League title medals, joining Belfast Celtic as Player/Manager in June 1934. 1873 - Forward Harry Bradshaw was born in Liverpool. He became the reds’ first international in February 1897 when he won his one and only England cap, at outside-left. He signed from Northwich Victoria in October 1893 and struck 53 times in 138 reds games, before moving on to Tottenham Hotspur in May 1898. European glory 2001 - We claimed our second UEFA Super Cup by beating European champions Bayern München 3-2 at the Stade Louis II in Monaco. John Arne Riise, with his first reds goal, Emile Heskey and Michael Owen put us in a commanding lead before the Germans staged a late, but ultimately fruitless, come-back. Most recently 2019 – Jordan Henderson captained the club in the League for the hundredth time as we beat Arsenal 3-1 at Anfield. Centre-half Joël Matip headed us in front from a corner shortly before the break. Mohamed Salah scored twice, including a penalty, before Lucas Torreira bagged a late consolation for the Gunners as we equalled a top-flight club record of twelve consecutive wins. 2015 – James Milner skippered the reds from the start for the first time as we held Arsenal to a goalless draw at the Emirates Stadium. 2011 – Kenny Dalglish secured his 200th win as reds boss as we won a League Cup Second Round tie 3-1 at Exeter City as we started our journey to Wembley glory. Luis Suárez scored in his third consecutive game before the break. Maxi Rodríguez and Andy Carroll struck after the break before a late consolation from the spot by Danny Nardiello. Centre-half Danny Wilson played his ninth and last reds game, with Raul Meireles appearing for the 44th and final time. 2004 - We lost the second leg of our Champions League qualifier 1-0 to Grazer AK at Anfield to progress 2-1 on aggregate. This was the first time we had lost a home second leg in Europe after winning the first leg away, although the feat was repeated a year later. Mario Tokić struck for the Austrian side, not giving fans much confidence that we could go all the way in the competition. Mixed fortunes against the Villains 2013 – Left-back Aly Cissokho made his reds bow from the bench as Daniel Sturridge’s first-half strike was enough to secure victory at Villa Park, with keeper Simon Mignolet making a series of crucial stops after the break. 2009 – We lost 3-1 at home to Aston Villa, as they took a first-half lead through a Lucas own goal as he deflected a free kick past the helpless Pepe Reina, and then a Curtis Davies header from a corner. Fernando Torres scored before Steven Gerrard conceded a needless penalty, converted by Ashley Young. 2003 - We left Villa Park having shared a goalless draw with Aston Villa, in our first away match of the season. Thommo’s bow 1963 - Winger and new record signing Peter Thompson made his official reds debut as we came from behind to win our season opener 2-1 at Blackburn Rovers. Ronnie Moran headed in after Rovers keeper Fred Else had saved his penalty, with Ian Callaghan bagging the winner as right-half Gordon Milne reached a century of League outings for the club. Other birthdays 1967 - Midfielder Michael Thomas was born in Lambeth. He arrived at Anfield from Arsenal for £1.5m in December 1991, less than three years after cruelly snatching the title for the Gunners with practically the last kick of the season’s final game in L4, as well as coming off the bench in their 1987 League Cup Final defeat of the reds. He made 163 appearances for the reds scoring twelve times, including the 1992 FA Cup Final opener, before teaming up with Graeme Souness again at SL Benfica. 1873 - Inside-right Johnny Walker was born in Shotts. He joined the reds from Heart Of Midlothian for £175 in March 1898, playing 120 times and scoring 31 goals, including the decisive final goal of the season to hand us our first League title in 1901. The following year he returned to his native Scotland, moving to Rangers. 1985 - Former reserves central midfielder David Mannix was born in Liverpool. He left Anfield in January 2007 to join Ham-Kam, who played in the second tier of Norwegian football, but later returned to England with Chester City. 1993 – Keeper Jamie Stephens was born in Wotton-under-Edge. He signed from Swindon Town in 2010, going on to win the Barclays Premier Academy League Save of the Season award for 2010/11 for a stop in an away win at Manchester United. He left the club for Newport County in July 2013, after a loan spell with Welsh side Airbus UK Broughton earlier that year. Macca dismissed 1991 - Steve McMahon was sent off for a stray elbow at Kenilworth Road as we were held to a goalless draw by Luton Town on our most recent League visit there. Dean Saunders somehow missed an open goal from well inside the six-yard box. Hodgson departs 1984 - David Hodgson joined Sunderland for £125,000. He had never fully established himself in his two years at Anfield after signing from Middlesbrough for £450,000, scoring ten times in 49 appearances, although he did claim a League championship medal and help us to clinch the FA Charity Shield on his reds bow. Crusading Lawro 1981 - We played Northern Irish side Crusaders in a friendly, winning 5-0. The game was arranged to commemorate the opening of a new stand at their Seaview ground. Mark Lawrenson struck his first reds goal in this game, with David Johnson and Terry McDermott adding to a brace from Kenny Dalglish. On the spot twice 1974 - Left-back Alec Lindsay scored two penalties as we beat Leicester City 2-1 at Anfield. Foxes skipper Keith Weller scored one of his six goals past us but was later fined £100 with £60 costs for “bringing the game into disrepute” after allegedly insulting the referee after the game due to his spot-kick awards. First southern visit 1960 - We visited The Dell in the League for the first time, being comprehensively beaten 4-1, with Tommy Leishman bagging his first reds goal. Terry Paine bagged the first of his four strikes against the reds, with Derek Reeves, George O’Brien and John Sydenham all also on target. We had previously played at The Dell four times in cup games, also without tasting victory. 2002 - We also faced Southampton when El-Hadji Diouf nabbed a brace in his first Anfield match, his first reds strikes, with Danny Murphy converting a last-minute penalty as we won 3-0. Stéphane Henchoz reached a century of League appearances for the reds in this game. A win for the new boss 1985 - We lost at St. James’ Park in what was Willie McFaul’s first match in charge as Caretaker Manager of Newcastle United. George Reilly headed the only goal of the game. Starting with a win 1957 - We kicked off our Second Division campaign with a 2-1 victory at Bristol City with both goals scored by Tony Rowley and Johnny Watkins netting the first of his four strikes past the reds. We ended that season in fourth. Entertaining the Mackems twice 1968 - We beat Sunderland 4-1 in a top-flight fixture thanks to goals from Tommy Smith, Chris Lawler, Ian Callaghan and Tony Hateley, who netted his 28th and last reds strike. Colin Suggett bagged one of his four goals against us. 1996 - We were held to a goalless draw in the Premiership. Heading to the Final 2004 - Future red Javier Mascherano helped Argentina to reach the Final of the Olympics football tournament in Athens as they beat Italy 3-0. On the same day, former reds Assistant Manager Pako Ayestarán was appointed Tecos boss, staying on until the following May having failed to secure promotion. 2007 – Moses featured for England Under-17’s as they beat Brazil 2-1 in a World Championship Finals group game in South Korea, his twelfth and last cap at this level. 2011 – Dani Pacheco joined Club Atlético de Madrid on loan, with an option to buy at the end of the season. However, they then loaned him out themselves to Rayo Vallecano de Madrid. On the same day, ex-reds reserves forward Lauri Dalla Valle joined Dundee United on loan from Fulham, netting three times in fifteen games for the Terrors. 2020 – Midfielder Jordan Williams joined Blackpool on a free transfer from Rochdale. He played fourteen times without scoring, moving on to Bolton Wanderers the following February. 2021 – Left-back Andy Robertson signed a new contract, having struck five times in 196 appearances to date, helping us to claim the Premier League title, UEFA Champions League, FIFA World Club Cup and UEFA Super Cup. 2009 – Young Hungarian forward András Simon joined Córdoba on loan. He failed to score in nine League outings for the Andalusian outfit. 2006 - Anthony Le Tallec joined Sochaux-Montbéliard on loan. He grabbed two goals in nineteen outings in his one season with Les Lionceaux. On the same day, Nicolas Anelka joined Bolton Wanderers from Fenerbahçe Spor Kulübü for £8m. Jimmy Murray scored one of his four goals past us before Geoff Strong headed in an equaliser. However, Colin Bell netted a last-minute winner. 1955 – We lost a Second Division fixture 3-0 to Sheffield Wednesday at Anfield. Inside-left John Evans had to leave the pitch after just ten minutes having broken his collar bone in a collision with Owls keeper Dave McIntosh. Redfern Froggatt scored one of his six goals past us before Roy Shiner and Jackie Sewell struck. Reds boss for England 1946 - Future reds Manager Don Welsh bagged a brace as England were held to a 2-2 draw by Scotland, who included Billy Liddell, in an unofficial international at Maine Road. The game was played in aid of the Bolton Disaster Fund, after 33 people had died during an FA Cup match between Bolton Wanderers and Stoke City at Burnden Park in March of that year. Also in international action 1993 – Future red Sami Hyypiä played for Finland Under-21’s in their 2-2 draw in a European Championships qualifier in Austria. On the same day, future red Bjørn Tore Kvarme featured for Norway Under-21’s as they won a friendly 1-0 in Denmark. 1985 – Future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel featured for Brazil Under-20’s as they beat the Republic of Ireland 2-1 in a World Cup Finals group game in the former USSR. -
Happy birthdays 1960 – Scottish centre-back Gary Gillespie was born in Bonnybridge. He was Joe Fagan’s first signing, arriving from Coventry City for £325,000 in July 1983. He won three League titles in his eight years at Anfield, scoring 16 times in his 214 appearances, before moving back north to his boyhood heroes Celtic for £925,000 in August 1991. 1989 – Croatian centre-half Dejan Lovren was born in Zenica. He arrived from Southampton for £20m in July 2014, notching eight times in 185 outings and helping us to claim the Premier League title before moving on to Zenit St. Petersburg for £10.9m in July 2020. 1992 – Spanish left-back Alberto Moreno was born in Seville. He signed on a month later than Lovren for £12m from his hometown club Sevilla, netting three times in 141 reds games before being released in June 2019. New club records 2020 – We beat Aston Villa behind closed doors 2-0 at Anfield, our 24th consecutive League win, a new club record and also a record for any club in the top flight. Sadio Mané and Curtis Jones both struck past ex-reds custodian Pepe Reina. 1967 - Tony Hateley signed from Chelsea for a then club record £96,000 fee. In his first season he grabbed 27 goals in 52 games, but injuries took their toll, and he was sold to Coventry City in September 1968 after a total of 28 strikes in 56 outings. In comes Ned 1904 - Ned Doig signed from Sunderland for £220. He went on to make 53 reds appearances, helping us to the Second Division title in 1905, and playing on until 1908, finishing as our oldest ever player aged 41 years and 165 days. In comes Fabs 2006 - Left-back Fábio Aurélio signed from Valencia on a free transfer. He made 134 appearances, notching four times and helping us to claim the FA Community Shield, but suffered from a succession of injuries before returning to his native Brazil to sign for Grêmio in May 2012. On the same day, winger Mark González was granted a work permit and Fernando Morientes officially signed for Valencia. González struck three times in 36 games, but left the club in July 2007 to join Real Betis Balompié. Heading off 2005 - Steven Gerrard announced his desire to leave Liverpool, after a second successive summer of transfer turmoil. Fortunately, he changed his mind the next day and bagged a total of 186 goals in 710 reds games before moving on to LA Galaxy in the summer of 2015, helping us to claim the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups, two UEFA Super Cups, three League Cups and the FA Community Shield. 2022 – Belgian forward Divock Origi signed for AC Milan after 41 goals in 175 reds games, including a crucial goal as we won the UEFA Champions League in Madrid in June 2019 and six derby strikes. He also helped us to claim the Premier League title, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup and League Cup since arriving from Lille OSC Métropole for £9.8m in July 2014. 1954 – Centre-half Joe Maloney was sold to Shrewsbury Town, for whom he played 237 League games. He had signed on at Anfield as a professional in January 1951, but only made twelve senior reds games. International firsts 2007 - Javier Mascherano scored his first senior international goal while winning his 27th cap. Argentina beat Paraguay 1-0 in their final Copa América group game in Venezuela as they qualified for the next stage on maximum points. 1996 – Future red John Arne Riise debuted for Norway Under-15’s as they lost 1-0 to Sweden in Sandefjord. The end of the road for Mighty Mouse 1982 - Phil Thompson played in England’s goalless draw with Spain in the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu in Madrid, which dumped England out of the World Cup. Late cameos from Trevor Brooking and ex-red Kevin Keegan could not result in the break-through goal. Keegan was winning his 63rd and final international cap. World Cup progress 2014 – Ex-red Dirk Kuyt played as the Netherlands required a penalty shoot-out to see off Costa Rica in their Quarter-final in Salvador, with future red Gini Wijnaldum also in action. Meanwhile, Divock Origi won his last cap before joining the reds as Belgium lost 1-0 to ex-red Javier Mascherano’s Argentina in Brasilia. Heading to the Final 2021 – Fabinho featured from the bench as Brazil beat Peru 1-0 in their Copa América Semi-final in Rio de Janeiro, although they then lost to Argentina. Reds on the move again 2000 - John Scales left Tottenham Hotspur for Ipswich Town on a free transfer. He had only made 33 starts in his three and a half years at White Hart Lane, going on to make just four appearances for the Suffolk club. 2002 - Steve Harkness was released by Sheffield Wednesday. A club spokesman said, “The club thanks Steve for his contribution over the past two seasons and wishes him well for the future.” He had played 32 times for the Owls during his two seasons at Hillsborough. 2012 – Defender Jon Otsemobor joined MK Dons on a free transfer from Sheffield Wednesday after 37 outings for the Owls. Internationals on target 1966 - Roger Hunt grabbed the only goal of England’s friendly in Poland as they warmed up for the World Cup Finals later that month. 2019 - Sadio Mané had a penalty saved having already scored the only goal as Senegal beat Uganda in their Africa Cup of Nations Finals Round of 16 game in Cairo, having also had a spot-kick foiled in his previous game. 2023 – Ex-red Liam Millar scored his first goal for Canada while winning his twentieth cap in their 4-2 defeat of Cuba in a CONCACAF Gold Cup group game in Texas. On the same day, Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott both played for England Under-21’s as they beat Israel 3-0 in a European Championships Finals group game in Georgia. Didi in charge 2011 - Dietmar Hamann was appointed Manager of Stockport County. He led them to just three wins in twenty games before resigning four months later following the failure of a proposed takeover. New deal for Sami 2002 - Sami Hyypiä signed a new four-year deal, which was subsequently extended twice further until the summer of 2009 when he joined Bayer 04 Leverkusen. He made 464 appearances for the reds, netting 35 times. On the move 1993 - Stan Collymore joined Nottingham Forest from Southend United for £2m. He went on to net an impressive 45 goals in 78 games for Forest. 2005 – Left-back Paul Konchesky moved to West Ham United from Charlton Athletic for £1.5m after six strikes in 169 outings for the Addicks. 2007 – Midfielder Nuri Şahin joined Feyenoord on loan from Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund, where he scored six times in 34 games. Meanwhile, keeper Daniele Padelli joined Pisa 1909 on loan from Sampdoria, playing eight times for the Serie B side. 2011 – Ex-reserves forward András Simon signed for top-flight side Győri ETO back in his native Hungary. He only played four League games, spending most of his three years out on loan. 2013 – Ex-reserves forward Lauri Dalla Valle signed for Belgian side Koninklijke Sint-Truidense Voetbalvereniging having been released by Norwegian club Molde earlier in the month. 2014 – Keeper Ian Dunbavin was released by Accrington Stanley. 2016 – Forward Fernando Torres re-joined Club Atlético de Madrid permanently after a successful loan spell. He struck 38 times in 160 games this time around. 2018 – Future keeper Andy Lonergan was released by Leeds United after nine first-team outings since signing for his second spell on a free transfer from Wolverhampton Wanderers in August 2017. Starting out 2021 – Left-back Luke Chambers signed pro terms with the reds, having joined the Academy at the age of six. He has so far played four senior games. On the same day, midfielder Liam Coyle left Anfield to sign for Accrington Stanley on a free transfer, netting once in 22 appearances in his first season with Accy. 1991 - Future reserves forward Lee Jones signed for Wrexham as a professional. He bagged thirteen goals in 49 games in his first period with the Dragons. Happy birthday King Kenny 1951 - Kenny Dalglish was born in Dalmarnack, Glasgow. He signed from Celtic for £440,000 in August 1977 and bagged 172 goals in 515 games, helping us to countless honours, both as a player for which he is fêted by many as the finest ever on the pitch, and later in two spells as Manager. His greatest moments as a player include scoring the goals that clinched the European Cup at Wembley in 1978, and the first half of a League and FA Cup double at Stamford Bridge eight years later, while his efforts in the aftermath of the Hillsborough disaster ensure he retains an even more special place in our hearts. 1955 - Joey Jones was born in Bangor. He signed from Wrexham for £110,000 in July 1975 and made exactly a century of reds appearances, bagging three goals and helping us to win a European Cup, two League titles and the FA Charity Shield in his time at Anfield. He rejoined Wrexham for £210,000 in October 1978. Crazy Horse out of the traps 1967 - New record signing Emlyn Hughes made his reds debut in a 2-1 home League win over Stoke City, when Chris Lawler and Roger Hunt netted, while Peter Dobing bagged one of his eight goals past us. ‘Crazy Horse’ went on to make 665 reds appearances in total. 1953 – Centre-half Joe Maloney debuted as Bolton Wanderers held us to a goalless draw at Anfield. 1922 – Winger Cyril Gilhespy made his reds bow as we drew 0-0 at Blackburn Rovers. Setting club records 1978 - Ray Clemence set a club record for a goalkeeper by making his 336th consecutive appearance in a 3-1 defeat at Chelsea, with Steve Ogrizovic stepping in to make his debut in the next match. Phil Neal opened the scoring from the spot, our 5,000th League goal to date. Steve Finnieston struck the last two of his four goals against the reds, with Tommy Langley also on the scoresheet. 2000 - Liverpool fielded nine non-British born players for the first time, with Jamie Carragher and Dominic Matteo being the only home-grown talents who started our 1-1 Premiership draw at Old Trafford, when Patrik Berger netted a trademark free-kick before Ole Gunnar Solskjær equalised. Red trebles at Anfield 1905 - Jack Parkinson netted three in a 5-0 Second Division victory over Blackpool, with Robert Robinson and Arthur Goddard also scoring. 1950 - We also beat the Seasiders, with Willie Fagan and Billy Liddell on target in our 2-1 FA Cup Sixth Round win, as we headed towards our second Final. The legendary Stan Mortensen bagging one of his eleven strikes against the reds. 1981 - Graeme Souness grabbed a hat-trick to become the first and so far only reds player to bag two European trebles in the same season, in our 5-1 trouncing of CSKA Sofia in the European Cup Third Round first leg, en route to lifting the trophy for the third time. Sammy Lee and Terry McDermott were also on target. The Bulgarians actually made a number of good chances but either missed them, or saw Ray Clemence repel their efforts. Derby joy 1972 - We thumped Everton 4-0 at Anfield with our first two strikes being own goals, from keeper Tommy Wright and John McLaughlin, with Wright also putting through his own net in his next game! Chris Lawler and Emlyn Hughes completed the scoring, the latter while playing his 200th League game for the reds. Most recently 2021 – Chelsea won 1-0 behind closed doors at Anfield, thanks to a Mason Mount strike. This condemned us to a fifth consecutive home defeat for the first time in our history. 2015 – We beat Burnley 2-0 at Anfield, thanks to a Jordan Henderson strike and header from Daniel Sturridge. 2017 – We beat Arsenal 3-1 at Anfield, with Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mané netting before the break. Danny Welbeck pulled a goal back, but Gini Wijnaldum struck late on. 1933 – Gordon Hodgson struck the only goal of the game as we beat Arsenal 1-0 at Highbury in a top-flight encounter as right-half Tom Morrison played his 200th reds game. Final outings 1939 - Left-half John Browning played his nineteenth and final reds game in our 1-1 home draw with Leicester City, with Phil Taylor bagging our late goal. 1897 – We beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-0 in L4 thanks to goals from Frank Becton, Harry Bradshaw and George Allan as forward Malcolm McVean made his 126th and last reds appearance. 1893 – We beat Nelson 3-0 in a Lancashire League meeting at Anfield. Matt McQueen struck twice, with his brother Hugh also on target as keeper Sydney Ross appeared for the 21st and final time. Beating the Geordies We have twice defeated Newcastle United on this day in history. 1995 - Robbie Fowler and Ian Rush struck as we beat them 2-0 in a Premiership match at Anfield. 1899 - We won a friendly at St. James’ Park 3-1, with George Allan bagging a treble. Thumping Oldham 1944 - Jack Balmer scored four goals as we trounced Oldham Athletic 8-1 at Anfield, in a game that counted for the Wartime League Cup as well as the League. Phil Taylor and Cyril Done both added braces. 1916 - We also beat them in another Wartime League match. Dave Watson and Arthur Metcalf were on target in our 4-1 victory, with Fred Pagnam netting twice. European disappointment 1992 - We lost 2-0 at Genoa in the first leg of our UEFA Cup Fourth Round encounter. Unfortunately, we also lost the Anfield return to crash out 4-1 on aggregate. Red R.I.P.s 1959 - Left-half Tom Bromilow died on a train while returning from a scouting mission for Leicester City. He signed professional terms at Anfield in 1919, having asked for a trial straight from the army. He went on to make 375 appearances, scoring eleven times while helping us to claim two League titles in successive seasons in the 1920’s, as well as earning full international honours with England. 1964 – Forward Vic Wright died. He struck 33 times in 85 reds games after signing from Rotherham United in March 1934. He moved on to Plymouth Argyle in June 1937. 2021 – Forward Phil Chisnall died. He signed from Manchester United for £25,000 in April 1964, after ten goals in 47 United games. However, he never established himself at Anfield, netting twice in nine appearances, leaving for Southend United in August 1967. For Scotland 1922 - Left-back Donald McKinlay won his second and final cap for Scotland in a 2-1 victory over Northern Ireland at Celtic Park. Partick Thistle’s ex-reds keeper Ken Campbell also featured for Scotland, while Billy Lacey was playing his final game as a reds player for the away side. 1911 - Centre-half Alex Raisbeck played for the Scottish League against a Football League side. 1907 - Ex-reds inside-right George Livingstone won his second and final cap, and only one as a Rangers player, as the Scots lost 1-0 in Wales, also in the British International Championships. Reds defender George Latham was on the winning side. 2019 – Future red Calvin Ramsay played for Scotland Under-16’s as they were thumped 4-0 by Denmark in a friendly in Malta. Future reds in opposition 2014 – Alberto Moreno faced Emre Can in an Under-21’s friendly in Palencia, with Spain beating Germany 2-0, with this being Can’s last cap at this level while playing for Bayer 04 Leverkusen. Beating the rest 1931 – Gordon Hodgson and future reds Ernie Blenkinsop and Tosh Johnson all featured as England beat The Rest 3-2 in a trial match at Highbury, with Dixie Dean bagging a treble. Tosh leaves the Vetch 1984 - John Toshack was sacked as Manager of Swansea City, after just two wins in eleven games in this second spell in charge. Other reds games 2006 – Charlton Athletic held us to a goalless draw at Anfield. 1964 – We came from two goals down to draw 2-2 at Sheffield Wednesday. Ian St. John and Willie Stevenson were on the scoresheet. This was Bill Shankly’s 200th game in charge. 1961 – We drew 2-2 in a Second Division match at Portsmouth with Alan Banks and Johnny Morrissey scoring our goals. 1911 – We lost 1-0 at Tottenham Hotspur as Billy Minter grabbed one of his five goals past us, with Sam Hardy saving a Bobby Steel penalty. Keepers on the move 1995 - Sander Westerveld joined Vitesse Arnhem from Twente. He played 101 League games for them before moving to Anfield four years later. 2004 - Former reserves custodian Ian Dunbavin joined Morecambe on loan from fellow Conference side Shrewsbury Town on loan, making three appearances. Also on the move 1996 - Paul Stewart joined Sunderland on a free transfer following a loan period. He netted five times in 37 games, before being offloaded to Stoke City. 2011 – Ex-reserves forward Lauri Dalla Valle joined Bournemouth on loan from Fulham, netting twice in eight outings for the Cherries. 2019 – Former reds coach Paco Herrera was sacked as Manager of Unión Deportiva Las Palmas for the second time, having led them to only three victories in fourteen League matches. In rides a knight 1958 - ‘Sir’ Roger Hunt signed for the reds from Stockton Heath. He netted 285 times in 492 reds games, and his 244 League goals remain a club record. He has the honour of being the first red to win the World Cup while at Anfield, while his club medal haul includes two League championships, an FA Cup, FA Charity Shield and a Second Division title. Happy birthday Jim 1963 - Left-back Jim Beglin was born in Waterford in the Republic of Ireland. He was Bob Paisley’s last signing, from Shamrock Rovers for £20,000 in May 1983, and went on to score three times in 98 reds appearances. He helped us to four trophies in 1986, the League and FA Cup double, a shared FA Charity Shield and the Screen Sport Super Cup. After breaking his leg against Everton in January 1987, he moved on to Leeds United, and is now a regular TV commentator. He never made the first team but sat on the bench at the European Cup Final in Rome in 1977, and on another 27 occasions, including both legs of the 1976 UEFA Cup Final, three FA Charity Shields and both legs of the UEFA Super Cup Final in 1977. He left Anfield to join Oldham Athletic in August 1978. 2015 – Defender Andre Wisdom joined Norwich City on loan, playing fourteen games for the Canaries in the following campaign. He arrived from Middlesbrough in August 1893, netting fourteen times in seventeen games as we won the Second Division title in our first League season. Adiós amigos 2013 – Pepe Reina joined Rafael Benítez’s SSC Napoli on loan, playing 41 times in his season in Italy. He helped them to claim the Coppa Italia and to finish third in Serie A. 2009 - Álvaro Arbeloa was sold to Real Madrid for £3.5m. He had struck twice in 98 reds games after signing from Real Club Deportivo de La Coruña for £2.64m in January 2007. 2005 - Antonio Núñez was sold to Real Club Celta de Vigo, netting twice in 32 games as they finished sixth in La Liga in his first season, after notching just once in 27 reds outings. Meanwhile, reserves winger Richie Partridge signed for Sheffield Wednesday. He struck once in twenty games for the Owls as they survived in the Championship, moving on to Rotherham United in June 2006. Roy’s winning start 2010 – Roy Hodgson took charge of the reds in a first-class game for the first time as we won 2-0 at Rabotnički Skopje in the Third Qualifying Round of the UEFA Europa League, thanks to a David N’Gog brace. Forwards David Amoo, Lauri Dalla Valle and Milan Jovanović all played their first reds games as Lucas made his debut as skipper. Stephen Darby played his sixth and last reds game. Less praised arrival 2002 - Young French keeper Patrice Luzi signed from AS Monaco on a free transfer. He made just one first-team appearance for the club, as substitute for the injured Jerzy Dudek in our long overdue League win at Chelsea in January 2004. Pepe ventures out 2006 - We lost 3-2 to 1. FC Kaiserslautern in Liechtenstein. Jermaine Pennant played his first reds game, while Robbie Fowler came on as a substitute for the injured Luis García, who had previously replaced him! Pepe Reina played some of the game in midfield, while our goals were scored by García and Craig Bellamy. 2017 – Left-back Andy Robertson played his first reds game as we won 3-0 at Hertha BSC Berlin in a game staged to celebrate both clubs’ 125th anniversaries. Dominic Solanke, Gini Wijnaldum and Mohamed Salah were all on target. Back to Norway We have twice returned to Vålerenga on this day over the years. 1998 - We lost 2-0 to Rosenborg BK. 1999 - Karl-Heinz Riedle, Dietmar Hamann and Erik Meijer all netted in our 4-1 win over Vålerenga themselves to claim the Norway Cup, with the scoring completed by a Fredrik Kjølner own goal. Double debutants 2000 - Both Markus Babbel and Nick Barmby made their first reds appearances in a 4-1 win at SC Freiburg, with Barmby opening the scoring. Emile Heskey, Michael Owen and Steve Staunton also got on the scoresheet. We made a total of thirteen substitutions in the game, our second of that pre-season. A treble from the boss 1945 - Don Welsh netted a hat-trick as we drew 3-3 with a BIA 21st Army side in Hannover in the immediate aftermath of the war. He never made a senior reds appearance, but went on to take charge of the reds in 1951. In 1954 he became the first manager to lead us down a division for over fifty years, becoming the first ever reds boss to be sacked, in 1956. German trips 1994 - We won 1-0 at Borussia Mönchengladbach in the Firestone International Challenge Cup, thanks to a Neil Ruddock goal. 1995 - We returned to Germany, being trounced 5-0 by Ajax in the first round of the Mönchengladbach Trophy. Antonio the champion 2006 - Reds right-back Antonio Barragán was on the winning side as Spain Under-19’s claimed the European Championships by beating Scotland 2-1 in the Final in Poznan. This was his final cap at any level prior to moving to Real Club Deportivo de La Coruña. 2005 – Future red David Martin played for England Under-19’s for the eleventh and final time as they lost 3-1 to France in the European Championships Final in Belfast.
