Happy birthday Vlad 1973 - Vladimír Šmicer was born in Verneřice, Děčín in Czechoslovakia. He made 184 reds appearances following his £3.75m transfer from Racing Club de Lens, scoring nineteen times, including a crucial strike in Istanbul. He signed for us on his 26th birthday, although he did not officially become a Liverpool player until 1st July 1999, and left for Girondins de Bordeaux in June 2005, having helped us to claim the Champions League, UEFA Cup, FA Cup and two League Cups. 1965 - Nicky Tanner was born in Bristol. He signed from Bristol Rovers for £20,000 in August 1988 and made a total of 59 appearances for the reds under Graeme Souness, netting his only goal at Goodison Park in December 1991. Sami’s farewell 2009 - We beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 at Anfield in our final game of the season, with Xabi Alonso playing his 210th and final reds game and Sami Hyypiä making an emotional farewell after his 464th and last appearance for the club. Fernando Torres headed in the opener with his fiftieth reds goal, in just his 84th game. We extended our lead after Alan Hutton deflected in a Dirk Kuyt effort to register our 150th own goal, before ex-red Robbie Keane reduced the deficit with the most recent of his five goals past us. Yossi Benayoun rounded off the scoring before Sami made his entrance. Stepping down 2004 - Gérard Houllier stepped down as reds boss. He had been in sole charge since November 1998, leading us to the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, two League Cups, UEFA Super Cup and FA Charity Shield. He said, “I'd rather have stayed as manager but I leave on good terms with everybody. I may have left Liverpool, but Liverpool will not leave me.” 2023 – Australian keeper Brad Jones announced his retirement from playing. He joined the from Middlesbrough for £2.3m in August 2010, making 27 senior appearances before being released in June 2015. On the same day, ex-red Pepe Reina played his thousandth professional game as Villarreal beat Cádiz 2-0. Crushed 2015 - We were humbled 6-1 in the final game of the season at Stoke City. Mame Biram Diouf bagged a brace before Jon Walters grabbed one of his seven goals past us. Ex-red Charlie Adam and Steven N’Zonzi then put the home side five up at the break. Steven Gerrard netted his 186th and last goal in his 710th and final reds game, but ex-red Peter Crouch then added his fourth and last goal against the reds. This was our biggest defeat since April 1963. Appointments galore 2011 – A raft of appointments at the club were announced, including Frank McParland as Director of Academy and Player Development, Pep Segura as Technical Director, Stuart Webber as Director of Recruitment, and Steve Cooper as Under-16’s Coach and Academy Manager. Rodolfo Borrell stepped up from Under-18’s Coach to Reserve Team Head Coach, with Mike Marsh taking over the Under-18’s. On the same day, Lucas Leiva was presented with the Standard Chartered Liverpool FC Player of the Season for 2010-11 award. En route to title number five 1947 - Our only other first-class game on this day to date brought a 2-1 victory at Arsenal in our penultimate game of the season, taking us back to the top of the table, despite being behind with only a quarter of an hour to go. Jack Balmer headed us level before a Bob Priday cross was turned into his own net by full-back Wally Barnes. We pipped Manchester United for the title that season by one point, to claim it for the fifth time. Boss George Kay was not present at the match as he was away watching transfer targets, so captain Balmer gave the team talk and the board of directors voted on tactical changes during the match! Emlyn for the last time 1980 - Ex-red Emlyn Hughes won his 62nd and final cap for England, coming off the bench as they beat Scotland 2-0 in a British International Championships match at Hampden Park. Phil Thompson skippered an England side that also included Ray Clemence, David Johnson and Terry McDermott, while Kenny Dalglish played for the Scots. Nice one Cyril 1941 - Cyril Done netted a treble as we thumped Chester 6-1 in a Wartime League game at Sealand Road. Douglas Cooke and Billy Liddell also scored, with our other strike coming from a Cole own goal. Bob’s farewell 1974 – Scottish left-back Bob Pursell died. He twice got us into trouble, firstly when we made an illegal approach to sign him from Queen’s Park in September 1911. He was then involved in the 1915 match-fixing scandal with Manchester United. He played 113 reds games without scoring, including the 1914 FA Cup Final, moving on to Port Vale in May 1920. New York friendlies We have twice played friendlies in New York on this day in history. 1953 - We beat 1. FC Nürnberg 4-3 in the Triborough Stadium, with Kevin Baron, Mervyn Jones, Billy Liddell and Sammy Smyth all on target. 1964 - We lost 2-0 to Hamburger SV at the Yankee Stadium. This was our first defeat in 36 games played over five visits to North America since the war. Most recently 2017 – Forward Rhian Brewster played his first reds game as we beat Sydney 3-0 in a post-season friendly down under, with ex-reds Daniel Agger, Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard and Steve McManaman all also in action. Daniel Sturridge, Alberto Moreno and Roberto Firmino were all on target in the first half. Friendlies in Scandinavia We have played three matches in Scandinavia on this day in history, scoring a total of twelve goals, but conceding eleven. 1914 - Billy Lacey struck twice as we drew 3-3 with a København Select XI in Denmark, with Tom Miller also scoring. 1932 – We beat an Odense Select side 3-0 on our Danish tour. Edmund Hancock struck twice, with Gordon Gunson also on target. 1939 - We lost 5-4 to a Swedish Combination side, with our goals coming from Harman van den Berg, Willie Fagan, Jack Balmer and Phil Taylor. 1951 - Cyril Done bagged a brace as we beat a Göteborg Select team 5-3, while Kevin Baron, Billy Liddell and Jimmy Payne also got on the scoresheet. This was the third consecutive game on this Swedish tour that Done had scored in. Double debutants 2001 - Future reds Chris Kirkland and Jermaine Pennant both made their debuts for England Under-21’s, with Stephen Wright also appearing in their 3-0 friendly defeat of Mexico at Filbert Street. This was Kirkland’s only cap as a Coventry City player. Reds on target at Wembley for England 2010 - Glen Johnson grabbed his first senior international goal, with ex-red Peter Crouch also netting as England beat Mexico 3-1 in a friendly. Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard and future red James Milner all also featured. On the same day, Maxi Rodríguez won his first cap as a reds player, netting twice as Argentina thumped Canada 5-0 in a friendly in Buenos Aires, with Javier Mascherano skippering the side. Meanwhile Brad Jones won his last cap while with Middlesbrough as Australia beat New Zealand 2-1 in a friendly in Melbourne. 1975 - Future red David Johnson scored as England trounced Scotland 5-1 in the British International Championships. Ray Clemence, Kevin Keegan, future red Kenny Dalglish and ex-red Ted MacDougall all also played. 1978 - Phil Neal netted from the spot as England thumped Hungary 4-1 in a friendly. Emlyn Hughes captained the side, with ex-red Kevin Keegan also playing. Steve Heighway and future red Mark Lawrenson played for the Republic of Ireland on the same day as they drew their European Championships qualifier in Denmark 3-3. Double Dutch 2008 – Ryan Babel bagged his final international goal as a reds player with Dirk Kuyt also on target as the Netherlands beat Andriy Voronin’s Ukraine 3-0 in a friendly in Feyenoord, with future reds coach John Heitinga also playing. Meanwhile, Krisztián Németh struck the only goal as Hungary Under-19’s faced Portugal in a European Championships qualifier in Székesfehérvár, with keeper Péter Gulácsi also featuring. Damien Plessis and future reds Robbie Keane and Sotirios Kyrgiakos also played for their countries that day. 2013 – Future red Gini Wijnaldum scored for the Dutch Under-21’s as they beat Australia Under-20’s 3-1 in a friendly in Emmen. Signing on 2016 – Keeper Loris Karius signed from 1. FSV Mainz 05 for £4.7m, officially becoming a red on 1st July, making 49 senior appearances for the reds, including our UEFA Champions League Final defeat in Kyiv. He signed for Newcastle United in September 2022 after his contract expired. On the same day, former reds Assistant Manager Pako Ayestarán was appointed permanent Head Coach of Valencia, although he was sacked just four months later. 1912 – Inside-forward Arthur Metcalf signed from Newcastle United for £150. He netted 28 times in 63 reds games, playing in every position on the park. 2006 - Ex-reds left-back Grégory Vignal signed for Racing Club de Lens, having been released by Portsmouth. He made 22 League appearances before moving back to England to join Birmingham City. 1948 – Right-half Roy Saunders signed on a free transfer from Hull City. He netted once in 146 reds appearances before joining Swansea Town in March 1959 in part-exchange for forward Des Palmer, who never featured for our first team. He was the father of 1990’s reds striker Dean and died in January 2009. 2012 – Reserves forward David Amoo signed for Preston North End, netting once in 24 games before joining Tranmere Rovers in January 2013. On the same day, left-back Fábio Aurélio joined Grêmio back in his native Brazil, having been released for the second time. He had arrived at Anfield on a Bosman free transfer in July 2006, netting four goals in 134 games, helping us to claim the FA Community Shield in his very first senior appearance. 2017 - Amoo signed for Cambridge United having been released by Partick Thistle, netting twice in 27 games in his first season with the U’s. Other boss movements 2022 - Jürgen Klopp was named as both the LMA Manager of the Year and the Premier League’s Manager of the Season. 2001 - Kevin Keegan was appointed Manager of Manchester City, following his departure from the England job seven months earlier. He led them to the First Division title in his first season, then keeping them in the top flight before leaving in March 2005. 1997 - Graeme Souness resigned as Southampton boss. He had been in charge at The Dell for less than a year, during which time he had guided them to just one point clear of relegation, and famously signed Ali Dia, George Weah’s alleged cousin. Redders injured 1997 - Jamie Redknapp was stretchered off with an ankle injury as England beat South Africa 2-1 in a friendly at Old Trafford. This was not the only time he was injured while on international duty. Roger on target 1963 - Roger Hunt scored for the Football League side in a FA Centenary/Football League 75th anniversary match that ended 3-3 at Highbury. 1967 - He struck in England’s 2-0 friendly defeat of Spain at Wembley. Other international goalscorers 2019 – Future red Darwin Núñez struck as Uruguay Under-20’s beat Norway 3-1 in a World Championship Finals group game in Poland. 2014 – Jordon Ibe bagged a treble as England Under-19’s thumped Montenegro 6-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Walsall, his last goals at this level. Clubmate Lloyd Jones debuted at this level, while Ryan Fulton played for Scotland in the same competition in Burton. 1939 - Future reds boss Don Welsh netted his only international goal while winning his third and final cap in England’s 2-0 friendly win in Romania. 1971 - Steve Heighway scored for the Republic of Ireland as they drew 1-1 with an FA XI at Lansdowne Road in a match to celebrate the FAI’s Golden Jubilee. This was his only goal for the senior Irish side. 2011 – Ex-red Robbie Keane bagged a brace, including a penalty, skippering the Republic of Ireland as they trounced Northern Ireland 5-0 in a Carling Nations Cup game in Dublin. 2012 - Future reds loanee Nuri Şahin netted for Turkey as they beat Georgia 3-1 in a friendly in Austria, his only goal as a Real Madrid player. 2006 – Şahin also played for Turkey as they drew a friendly 3-3 in Belgium. Backroom appointments 2012 – The appointments of Jen Chang as Corporate Relations and Communications Director and Chief Commercial Officer Billy Hogan were both announced. However, Chang left “by mutual consent” after just five months in the role. Chico the boss again 2002 - Steve Nicol was re-appointed interim head coach of New England Revolution, in the US Major League. He took them to the final of the MLS play-offs in his first full season, remaining in charge until October 2011. Skippers for the first time 1982 - Graeme Souness captained Scotland for the first time as they beat Wales 1-0 in the British International Championships at Hampden Park. Kenny Dalglish, Alan Hansen, Ian Rush and ex-red Joey Jones all also played that day. 1926 - Full-back Tommy Lucas became only the second red to captain England as he won his third and final cap in their 5-3 friendly defeat off Belgium in Antwerp. Future reds forward Tosh Johnson scored on his international bow. 1958 - Reds midfielder Johnny Wheeler skippered an FA XI that won a tour game 5-0 in Nigeria. Howie for England 1984 - Ex-red Howard Gayle scored his only England Under-21’s goal while winning his third and final cap as they beat Spain 2-0 at Bramall Lane to clinch the European Championships 3-0 on aggregate. Fellow ex-red Dave Watson also played. 2010 – Conor Coady skippered England Under-17’s as they beat Turkey 2-1 in a European Championships Finals group game in Liechtenstein, with Andre Wisdom also featuring. First and last caps 2006 - Mark González won his first cap as a reds player, and fourteenth to date, as Chile beat Steve Staunton’s Republic of Ireland side 1-0 in a friendly at Lansdowne Road, with future red Robbie Keane also featuring. Meanwhile, Ramon Calliste made his final appearance for Wales Under-21’s while on our books as they thumped Estonia 5-1 in a European Championships qualifier, with future red Ragnar Klavan winning his seventh and last cap at this level. Future red Daniel Agger and John Arne Riise were also in international action that day. 1998 – Future red Frode Kippe made his Norway Under-23’s debut as they beat Sweden 1-0 in Romania. 2019 – Rhys Williams won his fourth and last cap for England Under-18’s as they drew 1-1 with Spain in Slovakia, before losing a penalty shoot-out 3-2. Carl the champion 2006 - Carl Medjani skippered France Under-20’s to victory in the Final of the Toulon Tournament, with the game against the Netherlands ending goalless, but the French winning 5-3 on penalties. European Cup joy 1995 - Future red Jari Litmanen started as Ajax beat AC Milan 1-0 in Vienna to win the UEFA Champions League. 2000 - Ex-red Steve McManaman and future red Fernando Morientes both netted as Real Madrid beat Valencia 3-0 in the Stade de France to claim the trophy, with future reds Nicolas Anelka and Mauricio Pellegrino both also featuring. Also in international action 1964 – Gordon Milne and Peter Thompson both played for England as they beat the Republic of Ireland 3-1 in a friendly in Dublin. 1973 – Future red Ray Kennedy featured for England Under-23’s in their 1-1 draw in Denmark. 1981 – Future reds Mark Lawrenson and Michael Robinson both played as the Republic of Ireland lost a friendly 3-0 in Poland. 1983 – Future red John Wark turned out for Scotland as they were held to a goalless draw by Northern Ireland in the British International Championships at Hampden Park. 1986 – Future reds John Barnes and Peter Beardsley played for England as they beat Canada 1-0 in a friendly in Vancouver. 1987 – Future red Glenn Hysén played for Sweden as they beat Malta 1-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Gothenburg. 1988 – Barnes and Beardsley featured for England again, with clubmate Steve McMahon and future red Mark Wright also in action as England were held to a 1-1 draw by Colombia in a Rous Cup game at Wembley. 1994 – Future reds Phil Babb and Jason McAteer and ex-reds Ray Houghton and Steve Staunton all played for the Republic of Ireland as they beat Bolivia 1-0 in a friendly at Lansdowne Road. 2015 – Future red Marko Grujić played for Serbia Under-20’s as they beat the USA 1-0. -
Forward departures 1997 - John Barnes played his 407th and final reds game as we drew 1-1 at Sheffield Wednesday, with Jamie Redknapp netting our goal late on. This point ensured we finished ‘fourth in a two-horse race’ on goal difference. Stan Collymore was also making his final appearance for the club, his 81st. 1991 - Peter Beardsley played his 175th and last reds game, coming on as a substitute as we beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 at Anfield, thanks to goals from Ian Rush and David Speedie, who netted in his fourteenth and final appearance. Gary Mac’s farewell 2002 - Both Nicolas Anelka and Gary McAllister made their final reds appearances, with Nic scoring in our 5-0 rout of Ipswich Town at Anfield. John Arne Riise bagged a brace, with Michael Owen and Vladimír Šmicer scoring the other goals. Sami Hyypiä captained the reds for the hundredth time, with the result confirming the Tractor boys’ relegation, and our second-placed League finish. Gary Mac said, “I will never forget today and I want to thank all the fans who gave me such a great ovation. I thought I would get a decent reception but that surpassed all my wildest dreams. That sort of ovation is normally reserved for players who have won European Cups for a club. It was a brilliant day and it was nice to hear the Kop’s humour at its best again when they were telling me to go back to Coventry.” White suits and red faces 1996 - A huge disappointment came when we lost the FA Cup Final to Manchester United through a late Eric Cantona strike, the last of his five past us. The uninspiring game is perhaps best remembered for Liverpool’s white Armani suits. Ian Rush made his 660th and final reds appearance on this occasion. Most recently 2016 - Christian Benteke headed in his tenth and last reds goal, an injury time equaliser as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by Chelsea. Eden Hazard had given the Blues a half-time lead, one of his seven strikes past us. 2014 - We beat Newcastle United 2-1 at Anfield as we ended the season in second place as Manchester City won their game played at the same time to clinch the title. Martin Škrtel put through his own net as we went in a goal down at the break, an all-Premier League record fourth own goal in a season. Daniel Agger equalised while playing his 232nd and last reds game before Daniel Sturridge scored in a club record twentieth different Premier League game in a single campaign as we reached a top-flight club record of 101 goals. Shola Ameobi and substitute Paul Dummett were both then sent off for the visitors, although the latter card was later rescinded. Luis Suárez played his 133rd and final game for the club, with loanee left-back Aly Cissokho also turning out for the last time. Nando again 2008 - Fernando Torres and Andriy Voronin were on target in a 2-0 victory at Tottenham Hotspur. This was the first ever English top-flight match between two teams managed by Spaniards, while Torres struck his 24th League goal of the season in our final fixture, to break Ruud van Nistelrooy’s record for an overseas player in his first English campaign. Meanwhile, this was Voronin’s sixth and final reds goal and Steve Finnan’s 217th and last game for the club. Derailed at the Bridge 2003 - We lost 2-1 at Chelsea, to be pipped to a place in the Champions League qualifiers by the home side. Sami Hyypiä opened the scoring, but Marcel Desailly and Jesper Grønkjær both also struck in the first half. Patrik Berger came on from the bench, to make his 196th and final reds appearance, while Steven Gerrard was dismissed late on for a wild challenge in our final game of the season. In comes Lucas 2007 - Young Brazilian midfielder Lucas Leiva signed from Grêmio for a reported £5m. He appeared 346 times, notching just seven times, moving on to S.S. Lazio for £5m in July 2017. Other arrivals 1954 - Wing-half Bobby Campbell signed on as a professional. He struck twice in 25 first-team appearances before moving to Portsmouth in 1961, later going on to a successful managerial career. 1984 - Campbell was sacked as Pompey boss after two years, despite leading them to the old Third Division title in his first season in charge, keeping them up the following season. 1903 – Inside-forward Fred Buck arrived from West Bromwich Albion. He struck once in thirteen senior outings before joining Plymouth Argyle in April 1904. 1929 – South African half-back Charlie Thompson signed from Wallsend. He only made six senior appearances without scoring, moving on to Blackpool in May 1931. 1955 – Forward Bobby Murdoch signed as an amateur, turning pro two years later. He struck seven times in nineteen reds games as we struggled in the Second Division. He moved on to Barrow in September 1959. 2021 – Forward Layton Stewart signed a new contract, having been with the reds since the age of seven. He only made one senior appearance, in our League Cup Third Round encounter with Derby County at Anfield in November 2022, moving on to Preston North End in July 2023. 2022 – Forward Max Woltman signed a new contract, having been with the Academy since the age of seven. He played two first-team games before joining Oxford United in August 2023. Farewell to a manager 1915 - The funeral of Tom Watson took place. He had led Sunderland to the League title three times, and won two more championships during his time at Anfield, in 1901 and 1906, as well as taking us to our first FA Cup Final in 1914. He managed us for nineteen years in all, until his death. 2009 – It was announced that Academy Technical Manager Piet Hamberg was leaving at the end of the season. Reds trebles 1968 - Tony Hateley claimed a hat-trick in our 6-1 Anfield trouncing of Nottingham Forest, his second treble of the season. Roger Hunt added a brace, with Ian St. John also on target and Joe Baker nabbing the last of his four goals past us. 1940 - South African outside-right Berry Nieuwenhuys netted three times as we beat Stockport County 4-3 in a Wartime League game at Anfield. Harman van den Berg was also on target. Testimonials 1981 - A testimonial match for Steve Heighway was staged. A ‘Liverpool Past And Present’ side drew 2-2 with a similar Everton team at Anfield. 1993 - We took part in a testimonial for Joey Jones as our meeting with Wrexham ended 2-2 at the Racecourse Ground. Ian Rush and Don Hutchison netted for the reds. Rushie’s farewell 1987 - Ian Rush played for the final time in his first spell as a reds player as we lost 3-0 to the Israeli national side in the Ramat-Gan Stadium. 200 up for the king 1982 - Kenny Dalglish played his 200th League game for the reds as we drew 1-1 at Arsenal in a match originally postponed four months earlier, with Ian Rush scoring our first goal in this fixture for five seasons. Alan Sunderland equalised for the Gunners shortly after the break with the last of his six strikes against us. Mighty Mouse on target for England Kevin Keegan struck for England on this day in consecutive years. 1974 - He netted as they beat Wales 2-0 in a friendly in Cardiff with England being skippered by Emlyn Hughes for the first of 23 times. 1975 - He bagged the only goal as Cyprus were beaten in a European Championships qualifier in Limassol. Fellow reds Ray Clemence and Emlyn Hughes both also played. 1976 - Ray Clemence, Kevin Keegan, Ray Kennedy and Phil Thompson all represented England as they beat Northern Ireland 4-0 in a British International Championships game at Wembley. Final caps 1930 - Ex-red Billy Lacey won his final cap, for his third country, as the Republic of Ireland beat Belgium 3-1 in Brussels. This was his third cap for the south, following eighteen caps he had won for Ireland and another eight for Northern Ireland. 2019 – Future red Jakub Ojrzyński featured for Poland Under-16’s for the fifth and last time in their goalless draw with Norway in Romania. Meanwhile, future red Melkamu Frauendorf won his second and final Under-15’s cap as Germany beat the Netherlands 2-0. 2022 – Frauendorf played his third and last game for the Under-18’s, netting his only goal as Germany won a friendly 4-0 in Belgium. Dismissed! 1999 - Milan Baroš was sent off while winning his tenth cap for the Czech Republic Under-18’s as they lost 2-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Georgia. On the same day, fellow future red John Arne Riise played for Norway Under-19’s for the only time in their 1-1 friendly draw with Spain. 2016 – Galatasaray’s Ozan Kabak won his fifteenth and last cap for Turkey Under-16’s, but was dismissed in their 2-1 friendly defeat to Belgium in Portugal. Reds birthdays 1922 – Centre-forward Arthur Shepherd was born. He was on our books in the late 1940’s at the same time as his brothers Joseph and right-back Bill. He struck twelve times in eleven wartime games but never appeared for the reds in peacetime. 1974 - Former reserves keeper Tony Warner was born in Liverpool. He never made the first team, despite sitting on the bench 121 times. Award winners 2006 - Steven Gerrard was named the Barclays Premiership Player of the Month for April, with Pepe Reina claiming the ‘Golden Glove’ award for most Premiership clean sheets in the season, having kept twenty shut-outs. Reds managers in opposition 1940 - Future Liverpool bosses Bill Shankly and Don Welsh faced each other in a Wartime International at Hampden Park, with Scotland and England drawing 1-1. First caps 2004 - Alberto Aquilani won his final cap while on loan at Unione Sportiva Triestina, making his Under-21’s debut as Italy beat Poland 3-1. 2006 - Future reds keeper Nikolaj Mihajlov made his senior international debut as a substitute, winning his only cap as a PFC Levski Sofia player as Bulgaria were thumped 5-1 by Scotland in the Kirin Cup in Japan. Anfield final 1959 – Everton beat Tranmere Rovers in the Liverpool Senior Cup Final at Anfield. Other games on this day 1985 – We beat Aston Villa 2-1 at Anfield, with Ronnie Whelan and Ian Rush both scoring in a two-minute spell, before Paul Birch scored a consolation. 1979 – We won 1-0 at Middlesbrough thanks to a David Johnson header, having already clinched the League title. 1963 – We shared a goalless draw with Sheffield United at Bramall Lane. Champagne Charlie 1953 - Graeme Souness was born in Edinburgh. He won five League titles, three European Cups, four League Cups and three FA Charity Shields after signing from Middlesbrough for £352,000 in January 1978. He moved to Sampdoria for £650,000 in June 1984 after 55 goals in 359 games. He returned to Anfield as Manager in April 1991, although his time as reds boss was considerably less successful, with just one FA Cup triumph before his departure in January 1994. 1990 - Keeper Péter Gulácsi was born in Budapest. He joined on loan from MTK Hungária in August 2007, signing on permanently in September 2008. The young Hungarian made it into our bench 51 times but failed to feature for the first team before joining Red Bull Salzburg in June 2013. 1994 – Another young custodian, Tyrell Belford, was born in Nuneaton. He arrived from Coventry City in the summer of 2009, aged just fifteen. He signed on professionally in July 2011 but moved to Swindon Town on a free transfer two years later after falling behind Gulácsi and Danny Ward in the pecking order. 2004 – Forward Oakley Cannonier was born in Leeds. He joined the reds at Under-12’s level, signing pro terms in July 2021 and then a new deal in August 2022. His most significant impact to date remains as the ball-boy who quickly handed the ball to Trent Alexander-Arnold for his “corner taken quickly” against Barcelona in our UEFA Champions League Semi-final second leg in May 2019. The first sighting of Saint Michael 1997 - Michael Owen netted on his reds debut, becoming our youngest ever scorer aged seventeen years and 144 days. He had come on as a substitute for Patrik Berger less than twenty minutes previously in our 2-1 defeat by Wimbledon at Selhurst Park, nabbing our consolation after a Jason Euell goal and one of Dean Holdsworth’s four strikes past the reds. 2006 - He became a father for the second time, to his first son, named James Michael. Missing out on the League 1991 - Our 2-1 defeat at Nottingham Forest handed the League title to Arsenal, their second in three seasons. Nigel Clough scored the opener with Jan Mølby netting our equaliser from the spot, while David Burrows was playing his hundredth game for the reds. Ian Woan bagged the winner. This game was postponed from the previous December. 1998 - We hosted the Gunners at Anfield after they had already clinched the League title, their first since that 1991 triumph. Meanwhile, Alisson Becker kept his hundredth clean sheet for the club. 1995 – Keeper David James reached a century of reds games in our 2-0 defeat at Aston Villa, with Dwight Yorke netting two of his eight strikes against us. Red endings 1939 – We lost 2-0 at Manchester United in front of just 12,073 spectators. Johnny Hanlon bagged a brace as we ended the season in eleventh. This game saw the final official appearances of right-half Matt Busby, right-back Tommy Cooper, left-half Jimmy McInnes, keeper Arthur Riley, defender Fred Rogers and winger Harman van den Berg. 1996 - Phil Neal’s son Ashley played his final reserves game. Reaching a super cup final 1986 - Kevin MacDonald netted his fifth and last reds goal with Craig Johnston also scoring as we came from behind to beat Norwich City 3-1 at Anfield in the Semi-final second leg of the Screen Sport Super Cup, with Gary Brooke on target for the visitors. Jan Mølby added a penalty as we went through 4-2 on aggregate, with Sammy Lee playing his 295th and last reds game. The reds were presented with the League title prior to this game. The Final against Everton was held over until the following season - which we won, of course. Births and death 1971 - Former reserve keeper Jørgen Nielsen was born in Nykøbing Falster. The Dane never played a senior reds game, but he did sit on the bench 55 times following his £400,000 capture from Hvidovre in August 1997. 1969 - Another former reserve, midfielder Jim Magilton, was born in Belfast. He later had a successful career with Oxford United, Southampton and Ipswich Town before moving into management. 1915 - Tom Watson died. He had been appointed as reds boss in July 1896, doubling his salary to £300 a year from his time at Sunderland, whom he had led to three League titles and three FA Cup Semi-finals in four seasons. He went beyond the remit of Club Secretary at Anfield, involving himself in team selection, tactics and player recruitment, so becoming a Manager in all but name. He led the reds to two League titles and the Second Division championship and our first ever FA Cup Final, remaining in charge until his death. Nando the champion 2001 – Fernando Torres converted a penalty to hand Spain Under-16’s the European Championships, as they beat France 1-0 in the Final in the Stadium of Light in Sunderland, with fellow future reds Anthony Le Tallec and Florent Sinama-Pongolle both on the losing side. Firsts for Scotland 1959 - Motherwell’s Ian St. John won his first full international cap as Scotland beat West Germany 3-2 at Hampden Park. The Scots were managed by Andy Beattie, who had guested with the reds during the war, and later joined the backroom staff at Anfield after a successful management career. 1966 – Future red Kenny Dalglish made his first international appearance, bagging a brace as the Under-15’s won 4-3 in Northern Ireland. New ground approved 2008 – The revised design for the club’s new stadium in Stanley Park was granted planning permission by Liverpool City Council. However, work never fully got underway and these plans have now been scrapped. Management ins and outs 1999 - Jan Mølby was appointed Manager of Kidderminster Harriers. He led them to the Conference title in his first season, and then mid-table Third Division safety in the next two years. 2004 - Steve McMahon resigned as Blackpool boss, with fellow ex-red Mark Seagraves dismissed as Assistant Manager on the same day. McMahon had guided the Seasiders to 102 wins in his 350 games in charge, leading them back out of the basement in his first full season, and mid-table security in his following three seasons. Reds on target 2003 – Future red Alberto Aquilani struck for Italy Under-19’s as they beat Northern Ireland 2-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Andria. 2009 – Christopher Buchtmann scored as Germany Under-17’s beat Turkey 3-1 in a European Championships Finals match in Erfurt, while future red Jonjo Shelvey featured as England drew 1-1 with the Netherlands in Gera. 2011 – Samed Yeşil netted as Germany Under-17’s drew 1-1 with the Czech Republic in a European Championships Finals game in Serbia, with future red Emre Can also playing. Adam Morgan, Brad Smith and Raheem Sterling all featured as England lost 2-0 to Denmark in the same competition that day. 2017 – Future red Ozan Kabak netted for Turkey Under-17’s as they beat Croatia 4-1 in a European Championships finals group game in Rijeka. Signing on and off 2022 – Ex-reds reserves midfielder Conor Thomas was released by Cheltenham Town after twenty goals in 146 games since arriving in May 2018. 2017 – Scottish centre-back George Johnston signed professional terms with the reds. He moved on to Feyenoord in August 2019 after featuring in one pre-season friendly. 2011 – Midfielder Jay Spearing signed a new contract. He played 55 senior reds games without notching, moving on to Bolton Wanderers in August 2013 after a season-long loan there. 1992 - Future reds winger Mark Kennedy signed as a professional for Millwall. He went on to net twelve times in 54 games for the Lions, before moving to Anfield three years later. 1903 – Scottish inside-right George Livingstone was sold to Manchester City. He had signed from Celtic in May 1902 and bagged four goals in 32 games the following season. He went on to help City to claim the FA Cup in 1904. Seventh heaven 2006 - We thumped Birmingham City 7-0 at St. Andrews in the Sixth Round of the FA Cup, our record away victory in the competition, and our biggest win to that date under Rafael Benítez. Sami Hyypiä put us in front in the first minute, with Peter Crouch soon also scoring with his head, to get on target in his third consecutive game. Crouch added a third just before the break, with substitute Fernando Morientes scoring on the hour. John Arne Riise belted in our fifth, with Olivier Tebily’s own goal and a shot from another sub, Djibril Cissé, completing the rout. Momo Sissoko made his comeback from his eye injury at SL Benfica a month earlier, while attempting to wear a set of protective goggles! New boss 1951 – Don Welsh took over as the club’s Manager. He had guested for the reds during the Second World War, and was in charge at Anfield for 232 games. He has the indignity of being our first Manager to be sacked, in May 1956, after presiding over our relegation from the top flight in 1954, before failing to lead us back to the promised land. European victories 1984 - A superb reds victory came as we won 4-1 at SL Benfica, then led by Sven-Göran Eriksson, in the second leg of our European Cup Third Round tie. Ronnie Whelan bagged a brace, as Craig Johnston and Ian Rush also got on the scoresheet, with Kenny Dalglish running the show. Nené scored the first of his three goals for the Portuguese outfit against us. 1973 - Kevin Keegan netted the only goal of the game at Dynamo Dresden in the UEFA Cup Fourth Round second leg, en route to claiming the trophy for the first of three times so far. Keegan had two first-half strikes chalked off before finally notching. Comeback defeat 2012 - We led 2-0 at Queens Park Rangers with a quarter of an hour to go through a stunning Sebastián Coates strike, his first for the club, and Dirk Kuyt’s final reds goal, in his 200th game for the club, but eventually lost 3-2. Shaun Derry and ex-red Djibril Cissé both headed in before Jamie Mackie scored a last-gasp winner. Beaten down the East Lancs 2010 - We lost 2-1 at Manchester United as Fernando Torres headed us in front before Wayne Rooney converted the rebound of a penalty saved by Pepe Reina, one of his seven goals past us. Ji-Sung Park struck the winner after an hour with Torres and Yossi Benayoun both wasting good chances to draw us level. Signing on 1995 - Mark Kennedy signed from Millwall for £1.5m. Dirk Kuyt headed in the only goal of the tie late on Red centurions 1951 - Forward Jack Balmer played his 300th reds game in our 3-2 First Division win at Stoke City as we came back from two goals down. Cyril Done, Bill Jones and Billy Liddell struck our goals in what was our 2,000th first-class fixture. Les Johnston bagged a brace for the Potters. 1976 - We lost at Highbury in what was our hundredth First Division encounter with Arsenal, including sixteen when they were known as Woolwich Arsenal. John Radford struck the only goal of the game in the final minute, the last of his seven goals past us. All Done 1993 - Forward Cyril Done died. He signed from Bootle Boys Brigade in January 1938 and struck 37 times in 110 reds games, helping us to the League title in 1947 and the FA Cup Final three years later. He moved to Tranmere Rovers in May 1952, scoring nearly a century of goals for them and Port Vale. Goal of the season 1979 - Kenny Dalglish and Ray Kennedy netted as we won 2-0 at Derby County. Razor’s strike that came at the end of an eight-man passing movement was later named the BBC’s Goal of the Season. Sir Roger’s fifth treble 1962 - Roger Hunt netted his fifth hat-trick of the season in a 5-1 Second Division win over Middlesbrough at Anfield. Ian St. John bagged the other two. Most recently 2020 – We beat West Ham United 3-2 at Anfield to equal the English top-flight record of eighteen successive wins, with Gini Wijnaldum nodding us in front early on. However, we fell behind to an Issa Diop header and Pablo Fornals strike before we eventually triumphed through Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané to restore our 22-point lead at the top of the table. Rare goals 2018 – Emre Can headed in his fourteenth and last reds goal, our hundredth of the season to date, opening the scoring as we beat West Ham United 4-1 at Anfield. Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino scored after the break, with Michail Antonio pulling a goal back, one of his six past us to date, before Sadio Mané added another goal. Salah and Mané both also struck the woodwork while Dejan Lovren reached a century of League games for the reds. 1996 - Stan Collymore bagged a brace, with Michael Thomas netting his only goal of the season to give us a 3-2 League win at Blackburn Rovers. Stan’s first goal came from a tamely struck shot that was heading straight into the arms of Tim Flowers until it unexpectedly struck a divot and bounced into the net! Cue 5,000 travelling Kopites singing ‘England’s number one’ to the rueful keeper. Jason Wilcox struck one of his four goals against the reds, with Tim Sherwood also scoring as Rob Jones played his 200th game for the club. Happy birthdays 1878 - Inside-left Andy McGuigan was born in Newton Stewart, Wigtownshire. He signed from Hibernian in May 1900 and bagged fourteen goals in 37 reds games, including five against Stoke at Anfield in January 1902, as he became the first red ever to score so many in one game. He was part of our first League title-winning side in 1901, before joining Middlesbrough the following year. He later returned to Anfield as a scout and was a club director as we won back-to-back titles in 1922 and 1923. 2001 - Midfielder Luis Longstaff was born in Darlington. He joined the reds from Newcastle United in 2015, making his senior debut in our League Cup defeat at Aston Villa in December 2019, although he was released in June 2022. On the same day, future red Ragnar Klavan played for Estonia Under-17’s. Four for Fagan 1940 - Willie Fagan netted four goals, including a penalty, as we won 8-3 at Port Vale in a Wartime League fixture. Harman van den Berg struck twice with Jack Tennant and Billy Liddell also on target. Back on top 1973 - Steve Heighway and Kevin Keegan scored as we beat Ipswich Town 2-1 at Anfield to return to the top of the table, going on to claim our eighth League title that season. Future red David Johnson struck for the visitors, one of four goals he scored against us. 2019 – We shared a goalless draw with Manchester United at Old Trafford as we overtook Manchester City by a single point, failing to take advantage of the home side suffering a series of injuries before and during the game. Tosh at the Bernabeu again 1999 - John Toshack was appointed Manager of Real Madrid for the second time. He only remained in charge for nine months on this occasion before being sacked, allegedly for criticising his players in public. International endings 1993 - Torben Piechnik won his final Danish cap as a red as they lost a penalty shoot-out 5-4 to Argentina, after their Artemio Franchi Trophy game ended 1-1. He went on to win fifteen caps in total. 1971 - Larry Lloyd netted his only goal for England Under-23’s as they drew 2-2 with Scotland. He was winning his fourth cap, as was Ray Clemence, for whom it was his final game at this level. The game was switched from Aberdeen after a fire at Pittodrie, being staged instead at Hampden Park. 2019 – Future red Federico Chiesa won his third and last cap for Italy Under-19’s as they drew a friendly 1-1 in France. Young debutants 2001 – Future red Salif Diao debuted for Senegal in their goalless World Cup qualifying draw in Morocco, with future reds El-Hadji Diouf and Ragnar Klavan also in international action. 2004 - Michael Foley-Sheridan won his first cap for the Republic of Ireland Under-21’s as they held Portugal to a goalless draw in a tournament in Madeira. 2011 – Jack Dunn debuted for England Under-17’s as they drew 1-1 with Romania in the Algarve Tournament, with clubmate Matty Regan and future reds Emre Can and Samed Yeşil also featuring in the competition. 2009 – Tom Ince played for England Under-17’s as they thumped Israel 4-0 in the Algarve Tournament in Ferreiras. A Dublin first 1981 - Steve Heighway and ex-red Joey Jones both played in the first ever full international to be played at Tolka Park in Dublin. Wales beat the Republic of Ireland 3-1. Other reds games 1968 – We beat Leicester City 3-1 at Anfield despite falling behind, thanks to second-half goals from Ian Callaghan, Geoff Strong and Tony Hateley. 1965 – We defeated Birmingham City by the odd goal in seven in L4 as we led on four separate occasions. Ian Callaghan scored twice, including the eventual winner, with Roger Hunt and Peter Thompson also on the scoresheet. 1934 – Sunderland held us to a 1-1 draw at home, with Raich Carter putting the visitors ahead with one of his six goals past us. On the move 2022 – The appointment of Ben Latty as Commercial Director was announced. He had previously spent eight years in various Global Partnership roles with the reds. 2006 - Young reds custodian Paul Willis joined Stockport County on loan. He did not make a first-team appearance in his month at Edgeley Park. On the same day, ex-reds reserve goalie Paul Harrison joined Mark Wright’s Chester City from Wolverhampton Wanderers on a free transfer. Meanwhile, young midfielder Lee Peltier signed a new contract with the reds to keep him at Anfield until June 2008. He played just four times for the first eleven, and joined Yeovil Town in January 2008, having initially joined on loan. 1928 – Future reds outside-right Danny McRorie joined Alloa Athletic from Stenhousemuir, scoring five times in nine League outings before moving on to Morton just three months later. A reds stalwart passes on 2004 - Geoff Twentyman died in a Southport hospital after a long illness. He played 184 times at left-half after signing from Carlisle United for £10,000 in December 1953, bagging nineteen goals. He returned to Anfield as Chief Scout in 1967, a position he held for nineteen years. Among the players he recommended to the club were Ray Clemence, Kevin Keegan, Phil Neal, Ian Rush and John Toshack. On the same day, future red Ragnar Klavan played for Estonia in their 5-2 friendly defeat in Malta. Happy birthday Rickie 1982 - Rickie Lambert was born in Kirkby. The boyhood red signed from Southampton for £4m in June 2014, netting three times in 36 games before moving on to West Bromwich Albion in July 2015. Harry’s farewell 2008 - Harry Kewell played his 139th and final reds game as we were dumped out of the FA Cup by Barnsley, coming off the bench to replace Ryan Babel. Dirk Kuyt gave us the lead but the Tykes hit back through Stephen Foster’s header, with the reds missing a host of good chances before a late, late Brian Howard strike consigned us to a 2-1 Fifth Round defeat at Anfield. Keeper Charles Itandje was making his seventh and last reds appearance. Reds debutants 1992 - Hungarian István Kozma made his reds debut as a substitute for Jamie Redknapp in a goalless FA Cup Fifth Round tie at Ipswich Town. It was one of just ten first-team appearances he made in his two seasons at Anfield. 1974 - We also faced the Tractor boys at the same stage when Brian Hall and Kevin Keegan struck to hand us a 2-0 victory. 1938 - Harman van den Berg made his reds bow in a 3-1 League win at Everton. Jack Balmer scored the fastest derby goal in history, inside the first fifteen seconds, with John Shafto adding a brace in the final ten minutes, the last of his seven reds strikes. Tommy Lawton bagged one of his six derby goals for the Blues. Half ton for Al 2021 – Alisson Becker kept his fiftieth clean sheet in his 114th game for the reds as we beat RasenBallsport Leipzig e.V. 2-0 behind closed doors in the first leg of our UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie in Budapest. Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané both struck in the second half. 1907 – Sam Raybould scored as he played his 200th League game for the reds as we won 3-2 at The Wednesday, with Bill McPherson and Jack Cox also netting. A new England keeper 1907 - Keeper Sam Hardy made his England debut as they beat Ireland 1-0 in a British International Championships game at Goodison Park. He went on to win 21 caps in total. Jack’s farewell 1952 - Jack Balmer played his 288th and final reds League game in a 1-1 home draw with Charlton Athletic, with Cyril Done netting his 37th and last reds goal and Billy Kiernan nabbing one of his five goals against us. During his reds career he scored an impressive 110 goals in 309 games in all competitions. Gunned out 2014 – We lost 2-1 at Arsenal in the Fifth Round of the FA Cup, when we fell behind to goals from future red Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Lukas Podolski before Steven Gerrard pulled a goal back from the spot. We were later denied a second blatant penalty claim as the home side went on to lift the trophy for the eleventh time later that year. Other cup wins 2022 – Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah struck after the break as we won the first leg of our UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie 2-0 at Internazionale, on our way to the Final in Paris. 1980 – We won an FA Cup Fifth Round tie with Bury 2-0 at Anfield with both goals coming from substitute David Fairclough. Keith Kennedy lined up against his brother Alan for the first time in this game. Unfortunately, we fell at the Semi-final to Arsenal, after four matches. 1898 - Our other FA Cup win on this day in history saw us come from behind to beat Newton Heath, who later became Manchester United, 2-1 in a Second Round replay thanks to left-back Billy Dunlop’s first reds goal and forward Dan Cunliffe’s sixth and final reds goal. However, we were knocked out by Derby County in the next round. Forward Joe Lumsden was making his eighth and last reds appearance. First defeat 1895 - We suffered our first Anfield defeat in the FA Cup, in our fifth home fixture in this competition. Nottingham Forest won 2-0 in this Second Round tie. Macca the captain 1993 - Steve McManaman skippered the England Under-21’s for the first time as they thumped San Marino 6-0 in a European Championships qualifier at Kenilworth Road. McManaman scored, as did future reds Academy coach Mike Sheron and Jamie Redknapp on his debut. Fellow red Rob Jones also made his Under-21’s bow in this game. Five for Thomas 1918 - Thomas Bennett struck five goals, scoring in his third consecutive game as we trounced Burnley 7-1 at Anfield in a Wartime League game. Inside-forward Harry Lewis scored in his fourth consecutive game, while Arthur Metcalf was also on the scoresheet. Young champions 2010 – England Under-17’s won the Algarve Tournament after holding Portugal to a goalless draw. Conor Coady skippered the side, with Jack Robinson, Andre Wisdom and future red Conor Thomas also playing. A century on the south coast 2000 - We took part in a friendly at Bournemouth to commemorate the Cherries’ centenary year. Richie Partridge, Patrik Berger, Danny Murphy and Titi Camara all netted in our 4-0 win at Dean Court. On the same day, Brad Friedel played for the USA as they beat Peru 1-0 in a CONCACAF Gold Cup group game in Miami. Internationals on target 1972 - Future red Kenny Dalglish bagged a brace at the Baseball Ground for Scotland Under-23’s as they drew 2-2 with an England side that included Kevin Keegan, who was making his debut at this level. 2015 – Future red Diogo Jota scored for Portugal Under-19’s as they beat Norway 4-0 in a friendly in Spain. Meanwhile, future red Bobby Adekanye played for the Dutch Under-16’s in their 1-1 friendly draw with Germany in Portugal, with the Germans winning a penalty shoot-out 6-5. 2023 - Keyrol Figueroa scored in the first of four consecutive games for the USA Under-17’s as they beat Canada 1-0 in a CONCACAF Championship Finals group game in Guatemala. Disappointment against the Mancs 1977 - We held Manchester United to a goalless draw in our First Division meeting at Old Trafford, our third straight fixture there without any score. On the same day, future red Avi Cohen played for Israel as they drew a friendly 1-1 in Australia. 1946 - Worse came when we were thumped 5-0 in a Wartime League encounter at Anfield. A rare stalemate 1970 - We were held to a goalless draw at Anfield by Newcastle United, the only such stalemate against the Geordies at home since April 1930. Tommy Briggs opened the scoring for the home side before Johnny Wheeler drew us level after half time. King Kenny a dad once more 1988 - Kenny Dalglish became a father for the fourth time, as his wife Marina gave birth to Lauren at around 2:30 in the morning, to add to eleven-year-old Paul and daughters Kelly and Lynsey. Jürgen again 2024 - Jürgen Klopp was named as the Premier League Manager of the Month for the tenth time, for January when we had won all three of our League matches. -
Rush scored one, Rush scored two 1983 - Ian Rush scored five goals, becoming the third of five reds to do so in one game, as we thumped fourth-placed Luton Town 6-0 at home in the League, with his hat-trick completed by the 36th minute and his last being his fiftieth in the League for us. This was particularly impressive considering that he had to take painkillers before the game for a niggling groin injury and had only been passed fit two hours before the game. Kenny Dalglish netted the other goal, his 99th in the League for the reds. Amazingly, Tony Woodcock grabbed five goals for Arsenal on the same day, in their 6-2 victory at Aston Villa. He’s red, he’s white 2000 - Nick Barmby scored against Everton at the Anny Road end, before Kevin Campbell equalised with one of his four goals against the reds. We steamrollered our way to a 3-1 win in the second half, thanks to an Emile Heskey strike and a Patrik Berger penalty, after Vladimír Šmicer was felled by Thomas Gravesen, who was sent off. 1996 - Barmby arrived at Goodison from Middlesbrough for £5.75m. He went on to score 24 times in 133 games for the Toffees before moving across Stanley Park. Milestone goals 2005 - Bolo Zenden scored his first reds goal as we beat West Ham United 2-0 at Anfield, with Xabi Alonso having opened the scoring. We had twice previously beaten the Hammers on this day in history. 1973 - John Toshack bagged the only goal of our League Cup Second Round replay at Anfield. 1989 - Ian Rush and Peter Beardsley netted in a 2-0 win at Upton Park. 1938 – Huddersfield Town held us to a 3-3 draw in L4. Harman van den Berg scored his third and last reds goal after a minute, with Willie Fagan scoring from the spot and Jack Balmer also on target. Happy birthdays 1866 - Keeper Ned Doig was born in Arbroath. He made 53 reds appearances after signing from Sunderland for £150 in August 1904, helping us to the Second Division title in his first season, and played on until April 1908, finishing as our oldest ever player aged 41 years and 165 days. 1993 – Midfielder Conor Thomas was born in Coventry. He joined the reds on loan in January 2011, playing and training with the reserves, as well as training with the first team, but returned to Coventry City after a hamstring injury. Cup record 1892 - Our first ever home fixture in the FA Cup resulted in a 9-0 annihilation of Welsh side Newtown in the Second Qualifying Round, still our record win in the competition. Outside-right Tom Wyllie grabbed a hat-trick, with Malcolm McVean nabbing a brace and forward Jonathan Cameron, half-back John McCartney and outside-left Hugh McQueen all adding to an Andy Townsend own goal, the first we had ever benefited from. Matt and Hugh McQueen both made their reds bows, with McCartney bagging the first of his eight goals. League Cup trebles 1985 – The transfer-listed Paul Walsh scored a hat-trick as we beat Brighton & Hove Albion 4-0 at home. Kenny Dalglish netted the other late on as Ronnie Whelan appeared for the 200th time. 1986 - Kenny was also on target when Steve McMahon scored his second League Cup hat-trick of the season in our 4-1 defeat of Leicester City at Anfield in another Third Round tie. Most recently 2016 – We won 4-2 at Crystal Palace, twice taking the lead through Emre Can and Dejan Lovren before being pegged back by a James McArthur brace. Joël Matip nabbed his first reds goal to send us into the break ahead again, with Roberto Firmino completing the scoring. On the same day, Elijah Dixon-Bonner and Paul Glatzel played for England Under-16’s as they lost a friendly 3-0 to Russia in France. 2022 – Rodrigo Moreno opened the scoring for Leeds United at Anfield, with Mohamed Salah equalising. Crysencio Summerville bagged a late goal for the visitors as we lost 2-1. 2023 – We beat Nottingham Forest 3-0 in L4 as Diogo Jota and Darwin Núñez both struck before the break. Neill off again 2003 - Lucas Neill was sent off for Blackburn Rovers against the reds for the second time that season, as we won a League Cup Third Round game 4-3 at Ewood Park. Emile Heskey missed a penalty that would have completed his hat-trick, with the score at 3-1. Danny Murphy had already scored from the spot, with Harry Kewell also on target. A record for Rushie 1992 - Ian Rush scored his first ever goal at Old Trafford to put us 2-0 up following Don Hutchinson’s opener. It was his 287th reds goal in all competitions, breaking Roger Hunt’s club record. However, the game ended all square after Mark Hughes’ second-half brace, two of his nine goals past us. Rushie went on to bag a total of 346 goals for the reds. Four for Forshaw for sure 1924 - Dick Forshaw struck all our goals in a 4-1 defeat of Sheffield United at Anfield, with left-half Tom Bromilow playing his 200th reds game. Billy Gillespie struck the last of his seven goals against the reds as centre-half Billy McDevitt appeared for the reds for the fourth and final time. Dirk at the treble 2008 – Dirk Kuyt netted in his third consecutive reds game as we came from behind to beat Wigan Athletic 3-2. Daniel Agger’s calamitous error handed Amir Zaki the chance to net the first of his two goals. Kuyt equalised before Zaki restored the Latics’ lead. Antonia Valencia was sent off for the visitors before substitute Albert Riera equalised with his first reds strike. Kuyt then bagged a late winner. International reds galore 2005 - A whole host of reds featured in World Cup qualifiers, with Peter Crouch winning his first cap as a reds player in England’s 1-0 defeat of Austria at Old Trafford, and Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard, future reds Joe Cole and Christian Poulsen and ex-red Michael Owen all also in action. Djibril Cissé struck as France drew 1-1 in future red Philip Degen’s Switzerland, with ex-red El-Hadji Diouf on target as Senegal beat a Mali side that included Momo Sissoko and Djimi Traoré 3-0 in Dakar. 2004 – Darren Potter and future reds Daniel Agger, Alberto Aquilani, Ramon Calliste, Scott Carson, Stewart Downing, Glen Johnson, Gary O’Neil and Jermaine Pennant all played in European Championships qualifiers at Under-21’s level, with future red James Milner netting his first goal at this level. 2007 - Péter Gulácsi and Krisztián Németh both played for Hungary Under-19’s as they trounced Kazakhstan 6-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Szekesfehervar, with Németh winning his first cap at this level as a red. 2011 – Gulácsi skippered Hungary Under-21’s in their 2-1 European Championships qualifying defeat in Turkey. Charlie Adam and future red Mohamed Salah were also in international action that day. 2015 – Sheyi Ojo, Jordan Rossiter and future red Dominic Solanke all played as England Under-19’s won a European Championships qualifier 2-0 in Macedonia. Mamadou Sakho and ex-reds Javier Mascherano and Krisztián Németh also featured for their countries on the same day. 2021 – Ex-red Danny Ward scored an own goal as Wales drew 2-2 with the Czech Republic in a World Cup qualifier in Prague, with both Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah captaining their countries to victories in World Cup action. Owen Beck, Morgan Boyes, Neco Williams, future reds Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch, and ex-reds Joe Allen, Ki-Jana Hoever and Harry Wilson all also featured in internationals. Joe honoured 2012 – Reds midfielder Joe Allen was named Player of the Year and Club Player of the Year for 2011/12 at the FAW Awards, based on his time with Swansea City and the national side. Jimmy’s death 1908 – Forward Jimmy Stott died in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He signed from Middlesbrough in August 1893, netting fourteen times in seventeen games as we won the Second Division title in our first League season, moving on to Grimsby Town in July 1894. Peter Cormack put us in front before ex-red Ted MacDougall equalised. Steve Heighway restored our lead, but Pop Robson levelled with one of his five strikes past us. 1966 – Fulham held us to a 2-2 draw in L4. Geoff Strong scored inside the first minute, but Allan Clarke bagged the first two of his seven goals against us, with Ian St. John completing the scoring before the break. 1960 – We won a Second Division encounter 2-1 at Lincoln City as Roger Hunt nabbed a brace. 1904 – We beat Barnsley 2-0 in a Second Division fixture at Oakwell. Bobby Robinson had a penalty saved but converted the rebound, with John Carlin also on target. In opposition 1938 – Ex-reds reserves centre-half Matt O’Mahoney won his only cap for Northern Ireland as they lost 2-0 to Scotland in the British International Championships at Windsor Park. Andy Beattie, who guested for the reds during the war and later spent some time on our backroom staff, and Bill Shankly were both on the winning side. O’Mahoney also won six caps for the south of Ireland. -
Births and deaths 1960 - David Hodgson was born in Gateshead. He joined the reds from Middlesbrough for £450,000 in August 1982 but never fully established himself in his two years at Anfield, scoring ten times in 49 appearances, although he did claim a League championship medal and helped us to clinch the FA Charity Shield on his reds bow before he left for Sunderland for £125,000. 1890 – Inside-right John Tosswill was born in Eastbourne. He signed from Queens Park Rangers in June 1912, scoring once in eleven outings before joining Southend United in August 1913. 1876 - Forward Ronald ‘Wee’ Orr was born in Bartonholm, Ayrshire. He netted 39 times in 112 reds games after signing from Newcastle United for £350 in April 1908. He returned to Scotland in January 1912, signing for Raith Rovers. 2006 – South African winger Harman van den Berg died. He signed from Peninsular in his homeland in October 1937, but only managed to score three times in nineteen games before injuries and the Second World War intervened. 2019 – Full-back Steve Parr died. He made twenty appearances without notching after signing on a free transfer from Farrington Villa in May 1948. Seven years later, he joined Exeter City, and ended his playing career with Rochdale. New manager 1936 – George Kay was appointed Manager, replacing George Patterson. He led us to our first League title in 24 years in 1946, and the FA Cup Final four years later. He was forced to retire due to illness in January 1951, and sadly died just three years later. Amongst the players who joined the club during his tenure were the great Billy Liddell and Bob Paisley. Mo yet again 2022 – Mohamed Salah scored in his sixth consecutive opening League game of the season, a Premier League first for any club, with substitute Darwin Núñez also on target as Aleksandar Mitrović struck twice, including one from the spot, as we drew 2-2 at Fulham. In 2014 – Spanish right-back Javier Manquillo joined on a two-year loan from Club Atlético de Madrid, although he returned to his parent club in July 2015 after nineteen reds games. 2002 - Salif Diao signed from Sedan for £4.7m. He made 61 reds appearances, scoring three times, and moved to Stoke City in January 2007 after a successful loan spell there. 1982 - Reserves keeper Steve Ogrizovic joined Shrewsbury Town in a straight swap for Bob Wardle. Oggy had only made five first-team appearances for the reds, going on to play nearly a hundred times for the Shrews in his two years at Gay Meadow, before joining Coventry City. Wardle never made our first team and was forced to retire through injury inside a year. 1893 – Forward Jimmy Stott signed from Middlesbrough. He netted fourteen times in seventeen games as we won the Second Division title in our first League season, moving on to Grimsby Town in June 1894. Out 1999 - Øyvind Leonhardsen left for Tottenham Hotspur for £3m, after seven goals in 49 reds games. He said, “Things have been going pretty well in Liverpool, so it will be a bit sad to leave this club”. He struck eleven times in 72 games for Spurs, before moving on again to Aston Villa in August 2002. 2007 - Reserves centre-back Miki Roqué joined Xerez Club Deportivo SAD on loan. However, he only turned out once for them in the League and spent the following season with Cartagena, being released by the reds in June 2009. He sadly died in June 2012 aged just 23. 2014 – Midfielder Conor Coady was sold to Huddersfield Town for £375,000. He had only made two senior appearances, netting three times in 48 games for the Terriers before joining Wolverhampton Wanderers for a reported £2m in July 2015. 2015 - Spanish centre-half Rafael Páez signed for AD Alcorcón, having failed to break through at Anfield. 2016 – Centre-half Lloyd Jones signed a new two-year contract with the reds and joined Swindon Town on loan on the same day. He struck twice in 29 outings in his one season with the Robins, leaving the reds in January 2018 to sign for Luton Town. The start of a legend 1974 - Legendary reds boss Bob Paisley took charge of the reds for the first time, in a friendly against 1. FC Kaiserslautern at their Betzenbergstadion. Kevin Keegan was sent off in what the club claimed was a case of mistaken identity although we were still able to win 3-1, with Ray Kennedy, Peter Cormack and Phil Boersma on the scoresheet. We led 2-0 after thirty minutes before new signing Kennedy was scythed down by Dietmar Schwager, who was then pushed by Keegan. However, the club claimed that the referee had mistaken him for Peter Cormack, although Keegan admitted years later it had actually been him who had thrown a punch. Aldo bags a treble 1987 - John Aldridge netted a hat-trick, including a penalty, in our 4-1 friendly defeat of Norwegian side Vålerenga. Paul Walsh grabbed the other goal as we came from behind to win. 1986 - We were also in Scandinavia, drawing 1-1 with Danish side Kolding at the Mosevej Sportsplads, with Steve McMahon on target. Three Danish internationals, Allan Hansen, Allan Simonsen and Kent Nielsen, guested for the home side Belgian celebrations 1984 - We took part in a match to commemorate the eightieth anniversary of Belgian side Sporting de Charleroi. Unfortunately, we somewhat spoiled the party by thumping the home side 6-0, thanks to goals from Ian Rush, Michael Robinson, Gary Gillespie, John Wark, Steve Nicol and Ronnie Whelan. Other friendlies 1978 - We trounced Basel 6-0 at their St. Jakob-Park, with Kenny Dalglish, Jimmy Case and Emlyn Hughes all netting to add to a Robert Baldinger own goal and a brace from Ray Kennedy. 1996 - We were held to a goalless draw by Millwall at The Den. 2011 – We beat Valencia 2-0 at Anfield, thanks to goals from Andy Carroll and Sotirios Kyrgiakos. On the same day, Dani Pacheco featured as Spain thumped Australia 5-1 in a World Championship Finals group game in Colombia, with R.C.D. Espanyol’s Álvaro Vázquez scoring a hat-trick. 2016 - Sadio Mané scored his first reds goal as thumped Barcelona 4-0 in an International Champions Cup game at Wembley. We benefited from a Javier Mascherano own goal before Divock Origi and Marko Grujić completed the scoring. Not the Wright boss 2004 - Mark Wright resigned as Manager of Chester City. The Board of Directors issued a statement saying that, “Wright persistently flouted his managerial position with regard to the size and budget of the first-team squad. When he departed, Mr. Wright failed even to have the decency to enter the dressing room and address his players, choosing instead to simply drive away.” However, he subsequently had a third spell at the Deva Stadium. Personal honours 2000 - Reds defender Rigobert Song was named in a FIFA all-star squad to take on France in a charity match later in the month. The only other English-based player was Manchester City’s George Weah. 2001 - It was announced that Jerzy Dudek and Sami Hyypiä had both been nominated for UEFA awards, based on their performances in the previous season’s European competitions. A first cap 1997 - Stéphane Henchoz won his first cap as a Blackburn Rovers player, and 24th in total, as Switzerland lost 1-0 in a friendly in Slovakia. 1996 – Future red John Arne Riise nabbed a brace, his first goals for Norway Under-15’s as they thumped Finland 7-1 in a friendly in Øyer. On the move 2002 - Ex-red Paul Ince signed for Wolverhampton Wanderers, a month after being released by Middlesbrough. He played 131 times for the Molineux outfit but left in August 2006 after being overlooked for the Manager’s job. 2003 - Joe Cole joined Chelsea from West Ham United for £6.6m, after thirteen strikes in 150 outings for the Irons. 2007 – Left-back José Enrique moved to Newcastle United from Villarreal for £6.3m, after 25 games for El Submarino Amarillo. 2015 – Future reds winger Mohamed Salah joined Roma on loan from Chelsea, netting fifteen times in 42 games before making the move permanent for a reported €15m a year later. On the same day, Academy keeper Jamie Stephens signed for Barnet, playing 65 senior games for the Bees before being released in the summer of 2018. 2018 – Hungarian forward Krisztián Németh joined Sporting Kansas City from New England Revolution for $350,000 in allocation money and a first-round pick in the 2020 MLS SuperDraft. 2019 – Winger Harry Wilson joined Bournemouth on loan, going on to score seven goals in 35 games as the Cherries were relegated. On the same day, forward Taiwo Awoniyi moved to 1. FSV Mainz 05 for the season, netting once in twelve outings. Meanwhile, Canadian forward Liam Miller returned to Kilmarnock on loan, only scoring once in 22 games in his second campaign at Rugby Park. 2022 – Midfielder Leighton Clarkson joined Aberdeen on loan. He joined them permanently in June 2023 after six goals in 38 outings while there on a temporary basis. Young Nuri 2005 – Future reds loanee Nuri Şahin became the youngest ever Bundesliga player, aged 16 years 334 days, starting Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund’s 2-2 draw at VfL Wolfsburg. He was also cautioned. Also in international action 1986 – Future red Glenn Hysén played for Sweden in their 2-1 defeat of Finland in Helsinki. 1994 – Future red Haukur Ingi Guðnason featured as Denmark Under-17’s beat 2-1. 2010 – Adam Morgan appeared as England Under-17’s beat Iceland 2-1 in a Nordic Tournament game in Finland. 2011 – Dani Pacheco featured as Spain Under-20’s thrashed Australia 5-1 in a World Championship Finals group game in Colombia. 2021 – Future red Wataru Endō played as host nation Japan lost their Olympics third place play-off 3-1 to Mexico in Saitama. 2022 – Kieran Morrison featured for Northern Ireland Under-17's as they lost a friendly 1-0 to Faroe Islands in Norway.
