Redders off the mark 1991 - Jamie Redknapp scored his first reds goal as we held Southampton to a 1-1 League draw at The Dell. Alan Shearer had put the home side ahead with the first of his eight goals against the reds. In comes Igor 2000 - Igor Bišcan signed from Dinamo Zagreb for £5.5m. The big Croat helped us to the Worthington Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FA Charity Shield in 2001, and the Worthington Cup again two years later, as well as playing a key role in our Champions League triumph in 2005. He left for Panathinaikos in July 2005 after three goals in 118 reds games. 1897 – Right-back General Stevenson signed from Padiham, playing 22 times without scoring before joining Barnsley in June 1900. 1936 – South African keeper Dirk Kemp signed from Transvaal, although he only played thirty senior and ten Wartime games for the reds. 1905 – Scottish left-back David Murray was sold to Leeds City for £130. He had arrived from Everton on a free transfer in August 1904, helping us to clinch the Second Division title, playing fifteen senior games. Buchan-eering 1912 - Charlie Buchan scored five goals for Sunderland as they thrashed us 7-0 in a top-flight fixture at Roker Park, his first strikes past us. Three of his goals came in the final ten minutes when left-back Donald McKinlay had gone off injured and dusk had fallen. This remains the most ever scored by one player in a match against the reds. He in fact scored a total of eighteen times against the reds in his Sunderland career, as well as another three when with Arsenal, and bagged a treble in the reverse fixture later that season. Jackie Mordue netted one of his six goals past us, with Harry Martin also netting. The perfect group 2021 – We became the first English side to win all six UEFA Champions League group games in a season by winning 2-1 at AC Milan, despite falling behind to a Fikayo Tomori goal. Mohamed Salah and Divock Origi struck either side of half time as Sadio Mané played his fiftieth game in the competition for the reds, with forward Max Woltman debuting as a late substitute. We progressed all the way to the Final in Paris that campaign. Centre-backs at each end 2013 – We beat West Ham United 4-1 at Anfield, going ahead through a Guy Demel own goal just before the break. Mamadou Sakho bagged his first reds goal before Martin Škrtel put through his own net. However, Luis Suárez struck twice to secure the victory. Glen Johnson took over the captain’s armband when Steven Gerrard was substituted early in the second half, while Kevin Nolan was sent off for the visitors late on. Humbled by the Dutch 1966 - We suffered our record European defeat, losing 5-1 to a Johann Cruyff-inspired Ajax in a European Cup Second Round first leg tie at the fog-bound Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam, with Chris Lawler grabbing our last-minute consolation. In fact, the pitch was so foggy that Shanks was even able to wander on to give instructions to half-back Willie Stevenson without the officials noticing him! He famously decreed that the reds would turn things around in the second leg, but it was not to be, as we only drew 2-2. Also recently 2019 – We won 3-0 at Bournemouth to move eleven points clear at the top of the table. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keïta struck before the break, with Mohamed Salah on target in the second half. Centurions 1963 - Ian Callaghan was on target in his hundredth reds game as we drew 1-1 at Arsenal. Joe Baker equalised with the first of his four goals against the reds. 1974 – Ray Clemence played his 200th League game for us as we were held to a 2-2 draw by Derby County at Anfield. Ray Kennedy and Steve Heighway bagged our goals inside the first quarter of the match. Substitute Roger Davies netted one of his five goals past us, with Jeff Bourne also scoring. Wolves win again 1946 - Wolverhampton Wanderers won for the third consecutive League season at Anfield, interrupted by the war, going home with a 5-1 victory in this clash of the top two in the League. Wallasey-born Dennis Westcott scored four first-half goals for Wolves and had another strike wrongly ruled out for offside, with Jack Balmer nabbing our consolation from the spot. Remarkably, Westcott also grabbed four goals in his next game, against Bolton Wanderers. These were the last of his nine strikes past us. Nicol the winner 1996 - Steve Nicol was on the winning side for Sheffield Wednesday at Anfield, when Guy Whittingham struck the only goal of the game. Nicol got a nasty elbow in the face from Neil Ruddock during this game. Happy birthdays 1949 – Former reserve team boss John McMahon, Steve’s brother, was born in Manchester. He played more than 250 League games for Preston North End, also playing for Wigan Athletic and Tranmere Rovers before moving into coaching with Rovers and then Shrewsbury Town. He was in charge of the reserves between June 2009 and March 2011. 1972 - Sean Dundee was born in Durban. He arrived at Anfield for £1.8m in June 1998, but only made five appearances off the bench before leaving for VfB Stuttgart for £1m a year later. Off the mark quickly 1935 - Bob Glassey scored five minutes into his reds bow as we beat Preston North End 2-1 at Anfield. Jack Balmer nabbed our other goal, also his first reds strike. Bud Maxwell netted one of his seven goals against us. A lowly record 1895 - We recorded our lowest ever League attendance at Anfield, with just 1,000 turning up to see Frank Becton net the only goal of our Second Division encounter with Loughborough Town. Scottish reds 1965 - Ron Yeats won his second and final cap for Scotland as they beat Italy 3-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Naples. 1938 - Preston North End’s Bill Shankly won his fourth cap as the Scots beat Hungary 3-1 in a friendly at Ibrox. Full-back Andy Beattie, who guested for the reds during the war and later joined our backroom staff, won his seventh and final official cap for the Scots in the same game. Against the Irons We have twice entertained West Ham United at Anfield on this day. 1957 - Billy Liddell netted in our 1-1 Second Division draw. 1968 - We won 2-0 in the top flight, thanks to goals from Emlyn Hughes and Peter Thompson. Thumping the Villa 1985 - Jan Mølby, Paul Walsh and Craig Johnston all netted as we beat Aston Villa 3-0 at Anfield. 1907 - We beat them even more comprehensively in another First Division meeting, with Robert Robinson and Jack Parkinson both netting twice and Arthur Goddard also on the scoresheet in a 5-0 victory. Forward Joe Hewitt reached a century of reds games that day. Derby despair 1992 - We lost 2-1 at Goodison Park in front of the Sky cameras, with Mark Wright opening the scoring. Mo Johnston equalised almost immediately, before ex-red Peter Beardsley struck the winner after being played in by fellow ex-red Gary Ablett to become only the second player to score for both sides in this fixture. Also in Europe 2000 - Emile Heskey and Nick Barmby struck as we beat Olympiacos 2-0 at Anfield to reach the Fourth Round of the UEFA Cup, 4-2 on aggregate. Irish English 1932 – Future reds forward Sam English netted his only goal for Northern Ireland while winning his second and final cap as they lost 4-1 to Wales in the British International Championships in Wrexham, with reds keeper Elisha Scott also on the losing side. Future red Ernie Blenkinsop played for England as they beat Austria 4-3 in a friendly at Stamford Bridge on the same day. 2011 – Future red Mohamed Salah scored for Egypt Under-23’s in their 3-2 defeat by Morocco in the Africa Cup of Nations Semi-final in Marrakesh. Another big win 1918 - We thumped Oldham Athletic 5-1 at Anfield in a Wartime League fixture at Anfield, thanks to two apiece from Donald McKinlay and Thomas Green, and a goal from Harold Wadsworth. Other reds games 2002 – We lost 2-0 to Charlton Athletic at The Valley thanks to goals from Jason Euell and future red Paul Konchesky. 1929 – Gordon Hodgson opened the scoring but Burnley beat us 3-1 at Anfield. George Beel netted the last two of his eight goals against the reds, with Louis Page bagging one of his seven past us. 1901 – Sam Raybould struck as we were beaten 2-1 at Sheffield United. Alf Common scored the first of his five goals against us, with Walter Bennett scoring one of his four. Young reds in opposition 2000 - John Welsh and Mark Peers played for England Under-16’s as they lost 2-0 to France at The Valley, with future red Anthony Le Tallec bagging one of the goals. Management moves 1987 – It was announced that Peter Robinson had extended his contract as Club Secretary until 1995. 2005 - Steve McMahon quit as Perth Glory boss, following a combination of media speculation, poor transfer signings, the team’s indifferent form and an apparent disagreement with the board. 2008 – John Barnes managed Jamaica as they were held to a 1-1 draw in the Digicel Caribbean Championships in Trelawny by Trinidad & Tobago. 2015 - Nigel Clough was appointed Manager of Burton Albion for a second time, having been in charge originally between October 1998 and January 2009. Also moving on 2020 – Ex-reds forward Mario Balotelli signed for Serie B side Monza Brianza 1912, scoring six times in fourteen games. Missing out 2017 – Ex-red Luis Suárez was voted into thirteenth place in the Ballon d’Or, with Sadio Mané coming 23rd and Philippe Coutinho 29th as Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo won for the fifth time. -
Happy birthday Robbo 1994 – Left-back Andy Robertson was born in Glasgow. He signed from Hull City for an initial £8m in July 2017, netting eleven nine times in 334 games before his 31st birthday, helping us to claim the Premier League title, UEFA Champions League, FIFA World Club Cup, UEFA Super Cup, two League Cups and the FA Community Shield. Red centurions 2008 - Jamie Carragher played his hundredth European game as Fernando Torres struck the only goal of our Champions League tie against Internazionale at the San Siro, to reach the Quarter-finals thanks to a 3-0 aggregate victory. Nicolas Burdisso was sent off for the home side early in the second half. Xabi Alonso became a father to Jon that day, missing the game to remain at home for the birth. 1970 – Alun Evans bagged the only goal of our trip to Southampton as Geoff Strong appeared for the 200th time. 1907 – We drew 1-1 at Stoke with right-half Bobby Robinson reaching a century of League outings for the reds, with Joe Hewitt on target. 1899 - Full-back Archie Goldie played his hundredth League game for the reds in our 2-1 win at Preston North End. Hugh Morgan and George Allan both netted in what was Tom Watson’s hundredth game in charge of the side. Emile’s debut 2000 - Emile Heskey made his reds debut in a 1-1 League draw with Sunderland at Anfield, with Patrik Berger bagging a penalty in the second minute while playing his hundredth League game. The same game also brought Erik Meijer’s final reds start. He only managed seven more appearances as a substitute before being released to Hamburger SV via a loan spell with Preston North End. On our way to Cardiff 2001 - We won 4-2 at John Aldridge’s Tranmere Rovers in the FA Cup Quarter-final, with Danny Murphy, Michael Owen and Steven Gerrard all on target. Robbie Fowler’s penalty made him the tenth different reds player to score in that season’s FA Cup, equalling a club record. TV history 1967 - We played in the first FA Cup match to be screened on CCTV, as 64,851 attended the Fifth Round derby meeting at Goodison and another 40,149 watched on eight giant TV screens at Anfield this Saturday evening. The result went the wrong way, however, with Everton winning 1-0 thanks to an Alan Ball strike, one of his eleven past us. On our way to Wembley 1986 - We were held to a goalless draw at Anfield by Watford in the Sixth Round of the FA Cup. However, we won the replay at Vicarage Road 2-1 six days later, as we headed towards the double. Recent defeats 2020 - Joe Gomez reached a century of reds games as we lost 3-2 to Club Atlético de Madrid after extra time in the second leg of our UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie, having led 1-0 on the night after ninety minutes through a Gini Wijnaldum header. Roberto Firmino put us in front in extra time before a Marcos Llorente brace and late Álvaro Morata strike condemned us to defeat. This was our last game before the COVID-19 lockdown, and Jürgen Klopp’s fiftieth European game in charge of the reds. 2023 – Philip Billing put Bournemouth in front after half an hour as we lost 1-0 at the Vitality Stadium, with Mohamed Salah missing a second-half penalty. Joe born 1873 – Centre-half Joe McQue was born in Springburn, Glasgow. He signed from Celtic in August 1892, netting fourteen times in 142 games before returning north of the border in September 1898 to sign for Third Lanark having helped us to claim the Second Division title twice. Stig retires 2003 - Stig Inge Bjørnebye announced his retirement from football. He had been at Blackburn Rovers for nearly three years after leaving Anfield. He bagged four goals in 184 reds games across eight seasons, helping us to the Coca Cola Cup in 1995, also winning 75 Norwegian caps. Doing the Boro, twice We have twice had great League results against Middlesbrough on this day in history. 1989 - We won 4-0 at Ayresome Park, with Peter Beardsley, Ray Houghton, John Aldridge and Steve McMahon all netting. 1911 - We won 3-0 at Anfield, with Jack Parkinson, Sam Gilligan and Arthur Goddard on the scoresheet. Centre-half Jimmy Harrop reached a century of games for the reds. Men against boys 1893 - Our first ever official game on this day in history was at Bootle Boys Brigade in the Second Round of the Lancashire Cup. The redmen got turned over 2-1 by the boys, with Hugh McQueen netting our goal. Another legend signs on 1936 – Right-half Matt Busby signed from Manchester City for £8,000. He played 122 reds games, many as captain, notching three times as well as netting once more in 26 wartime matches. He, of course, went on to even greater success as the Manager of Manchester United. Elisha’s last 1936 - Ex-red Elisha Scott won his 31st and final cap for Northern Ireland in their 3-2 defeat of Wales in the British International Championships in Belfast. Dunlop tyred out 1905 - Left-back Billy Dunlop scored his third and final reds goal as we thumped Doncaster Rovers 4-1 at their Benetthorpe Ground in a Second Division fixture. Robert Robinson added a brace, with Jack Cox also on target. Fighting back 1939 – Portsmouth came back from 4-1 down with less than half an hour remaining to draw 4-4 in a top-flight match at Anfield. Phil Taylor bagged a brace with Willie Fagan and Berry Nieuwenhuys also netting before smog descended on the pitch. Parker struck his fifth and final goal against the reds, with Jock Anderson bagging the last of his four and Jimmy McAlinden and Bert Barlow also scoring for Pompey. Mixed fortunes against Citeh We have faced Manchester City three times on this day in history, winning once and drawing on both other occasions. 1980 - Graeme Souness struck as we won 2-0 at Anfield, with a Tommy Caton own goal opening the scoring. 1933 - Gordon Hodgson was on target from the spot in a top-flight draw in L4, as Alex Herd struck the first of his eight goals past us. 1916 - Dave Watson was on the scoresheet in a Wartime League stalemate at Hyde Road. European disappointments 2004 - Milan Baroš struck our goal as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield in the first leg of our UEFA Cup Fourth round tie with Olympique de Marseille. Didier Drogba netted the equaliser for the French side, the first of eleven goals he scored against the reds. 2010 – Left-winger Albert Riera played his 56th and final reds game as we lost 1-0 at Lille OSC Métropole in the first leg of our UEFA Europa League Round of 16 tie after Eden Hazard’s late free-kick curled over everyone and into the far corner, the first of his seven goals against the reds to date. Other reds games 1995 – We lost 2-1 at home to Tottenham Hotspur in an FA Cup Sixth Round tie. Robbie Fowler gave us the lead, but Teddy Sheringham equalised on the stroke of half time with one of his seven goals past us. Jürgen Klinsmann nabbed the late winner. 1992 – Dean Saunders netted the only goal early on in West Ham United’s visit to Anfield. 1990 – We drew a Sixth Round match 2-2 at Queens Park Rangers. John Barnes scored direct from a free-kick, with Ian Rush also on the scoresheet. We lost out to Crystal Palace in the Semi-final that season. 1972 – We held Chelsea to a goalless draw at Stamford Bridge. 1961 – We beat Huddersfield Town 3-1 in a Second Division meeting in L4 with Alan Banks netting twice and Kevin Lewis scoring from the spot. 1950 – We lost 2-0 at Aston Villa. Bosses on the move 2002 - John Toshack was sacked as Manager of Real Sociedad for the third time, after the club dropped back into the relegation zone. 2005 - Bruce Grobbelaar was asked to resign as Manager of South African side Umtata Bush Bucks. 2016 - Rafael Benítez was appointed Manager of Newcastle United, failing to save them from relegation that season, but then immediately leading them back up as champions. Also on the move 1980 – Forward Frank McGarvey was sold to Celtic for £270,000, becoming Scotland’s most expensive footballer. He had signed from St. Mirren for £300,000 in May 1979 but failed to break through at Anfield. He went on to score 113 times in 245 games for the Bhoys. 1998 - Steve Nicol joined First Division West Bromwich Albion on loan from Sheffield Wednesday. He made ten appearances while at The Hawthorns. 2010 – Reserves right-back Stephen Darby joined Swindon Town until the end of the season. He played fifteen times as they reached the League One Play-off Final. 2014 – Academy defender Jakub Sokolík joined Southend United on loan, playing twelve times in this first spell at Roots Hall. 2016 - Ex-red John Arne Riise re-signed for Aalesunds, only scoring once in thirteen outings back at his first club. Also in international action 1912 – Ernest Peake played for Wales as they lost 2-0 to England in the British International Championships in Wrexham. 1975 – Steve Heighway featured as the Republic of Ireland beat a West Germany B team 1-0 in Dublin. 1998 – Future red Steve Finnan played for the Irish B team as they lost 1-0 to Northern Ireland in Dublin. 2006 – Future red Shane O’Connor played for the Republic of Ireland Under-16’s in their friendly encounter with Northern Ireland in Dundalk. 2009 – Future red Fabio Borini played for Italy Under-19’s as they beat Norway 1-0 in a friendly in Udine. 2015 – Bobby Adekanye featured for the Dutch Under-16’s as they lost 1-0 to the Czech Republic. Fellow future red Wataru Endō captained Japan Under-22’s as they thrashed Myanmar Under-23’s 9-0 in Chiba. -
Crazy Horse trots in 1967 – Emlyn Hughes signed from Blackpool for a club record £65,000, netting 49 times in 665 games. He helped us to claim two European Cups, four League titles, two UEFA Cups, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and two FA Charity Shields before joining Wolverhampton Wanderers for £90,000 in August 1979. His greatest season was probably 1976/77 when he captained the side to within a whisker of a unique treble, as well as being voted the Football Writers’ Player of the Year. Sadly, he died in November 2004, aged just 57. Claiming the trophy yet again 2022 – We won the League Cup for a record ninth time by beating Chelsea 11-10 in a penalty shoot-out once the Final had ended goalless after two hours. All eleven reds players converted their spot-kicks, including goalie Caoimhín Kelleher, with Blues’ keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, who had been brought on from the bench especially for the shoot-out, then sending his penalty over the crossbar. Incomings 2010 – Winger Raheem Sterling signed from Queens Park Rangers for £500,000. He bagged 23 goals in 129 reds games before being sold to Manchester City for an initial £44m in July 2015. 1912 – Forward Billy Lacey and centre-forward Tommy Gracie signed from Everton for £300 with winger Harold Uren heading in the opposite direction as part of the deal. Lacey played 259 times for the reds, including the FA Cup Final in 1914. He helped us to two League titles in the 1920’s, netting 29 times before crossing the Mersey to join New Brighton in June 1924. Gracie only managed to score five times in 34 reds games, returning north of the border to join Heart Of Midlothian for £400 in May 1914. Jonjo’s day 1992 – Ex-reds midfielder Jonjo Shelvey was born in Romford. He signed from Charlton Athletic for £1.7m in May 2010, having become their youngest ever player. He struck seven times in 69 senior appearances, moving on to Swansea City for an initial £5m in July 2013. Cardiff disappointment 2005 - We were beaten by Chelsea in the Final of the Carling Cup in Cardiff, 3-2 after extra time. John Arne Riise struck in the first minute, and we led until a Steven Gerrard own goal rescued the Blues with just eleven minutes left. Didier Drogba bagged one of his eleven goals against us with Mateja Kezman also netting before Antonio Núñez bagged a consolation, his only reds goal. He signed from Everton in November 1931 and scored 52 goals in 177 reds games before we received a club record £7,500 fee from Chelsea in July 1938, although he returned to guest sixteen times for the reds during the war, bagging another three goals. Forward Bill Kinghorn was born in Strathblane on exactly the same day. The Scotsman signed from Queens Park in April 1938 and netted four times in nineteen reds games, and another three times in eleven wartime matches. 1937 - Hanson struck on his 25th birthday as we were held to a 2-2 draw at Anfield by Brentford, with Jack Balmer also scoring. Bobby Reid bagged one of his five goals past us as Dave McCulloch nabbed one of his seven against the reds. 1907 - Forward Ted Harston was born in Monk Bretton, Barnsley. He joined the reds for £3,000 from Mansfield Town in June 1937, striking on his reds bow as we were thumped 6-1 at Chelsea that August. He bagged a brace in his second game but only played a further three games, returning to amateur football with Shorts in the Kent League in August 1939 after suffering a broken leg that ended his professional career. In charge 1991 - Ronnie Moran remained in temporary charge following Kenny Dalglish’s resignation as Everton knocked us out of the FA Cup in a Fifth Round second replay at Goodison, the last ever to be played in the competition. Ex-red Dave Watson headed the only goal of the game. 1978 - John Toshack was appointed Player/Manager of basement side Swansea City. He remained in charge for more than five years, as the Swans won 104 of their 250 games under his management, rising from the Fourth Division to the top flight in just four years, although they were relegated back to the Second Division in his final full season. Hodgson’s debut 1926 - South African forward Gordon Hodgson made his reds bow as Dick Forshaw struck early on in our 1-1 draw at Manchester City. Ex-Evertonian Tommy Browell netted his seventh and last goal against us. More records for Mickey 2003 - Michael Owen scored in his fifteenth different European game, a then club record, as we beat an Auxerre side that featured future red Djibril Cissé 2-0 in the UEFA Cup Fourth Round second leg at Anfield, with Danny Murphy also on target. Owen’s goal was his twentieth in Europe, equalling Ian Rush’s club record. Most recently 2019 – We thumped Watford 5-0 at Anfield, with Sadio Mané scoring twice before the break. Divock Origi was on target in the second half, before Virgil van Dijk headed in a brace, as Trent Alexander-Arnold ended the match with three assists. 2017 – We lost 3-1 at Leicester City, with Jamie Vardy bagging two of his ten goals past us to date and Danny Drinkwater also on target, as Philippe Coutinho bagged our consolation in their first game after Claudio Ranieri’s sacking. Disappointment in the East End 1965 – We lost a top-flight fixture 2-1 at West Ham United, with Roger Hunt grabbing our goal. Geoff Hurst struck one of his nine goals against us, with Eddie Presland also on the scoresheet. 2011 – We went down 3-1 at Upton Park, with ex-Hammer Glen Johnson on target after Scott Parker and Demba Ba had put the Irons two goals ahead. Carlton Cole added a late third. International starts and end 2012 – Future red Mohamed Salah scored his first senior goal while winning his third cap for Egypt, in their 5-0 friendly thumping of Kenya in Qatar. 1991 – Future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel won his first cap as a Parma player as Brazil drew a friendly 1-1 with Paraguay in Campo Grande. 1974 - Future red Joey Jones made his Under-23’s debut as Wales lost 3-0 to Scotland at the Pittodrie Stadium. 2011 – Keeper Tyrell Bedford won his second and final cap for England Under-17’s as they drew 2-2 with Portugal in the Algarve Tournament, with Jack Dunn and Matty Regan both also in action. On the same day, future red Samed Yeşil scored as Germany drew 1-1 with Romania in the same competition, with fellow future red Emre Can also featuring. Sadio the champion 2022 - Sadio Mané had a penalty saved as the Africa Cup of Nations Final ended goalless between Senegal and Mohamed Salah’s Egypt in Cameroon. Senegal won a penalty shoot-out 4-2, with Mané converting the winning kick. Dirk strikes again 2010 - Dirk Kuyt headed in his fiftieth reds goal from a corner, in his 181st game for the club, to secure a 1-0 derby victory at Anfield. Centre-half Sotirios Kyrgiakos was sent off for a two-footed challenge on Marouane Fellaini, despite taking the ball, with both Fellaini and Stephen Pienaar lucky to avoid red cards in the first half. Pienaar was eventually dismissed in stoppage time. Off the mark 2022 – Luis Díaz made his reds bow with Harvey Elliott striking his first reds goal as we beat Cardiff City 3-1 in our FA Cup Fourth Road encounter at Anfield, en route to winning the trophy for the eighth time. American issues 2007 - Liverpool FC announced that the Board had agreed the terms of an offer from George Gillett Jr. and Tom Hicks to buy the club. Many happy returns 1916 - Legendary forward Jack Balmer was born in West Derby, Liverpool. He quit Everton where he had been an amateur for Anfield in May 1935, signing on professionally three months later. He also played in the FA Cup Final three years later and coached the reds after retiring from playing in May 1952. 1908 - Right-back Willie Steel was born in Blantyre, Lanarkshire. He failed to score in 128 reds games after signing from St. Johnstone in September 1931, before being sold to Birmingham City for £5,000 in March 1935. 1903 – Forward James Clark was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He signed from his hometown club for £3,000 in January 1928 and bagged eleven goals in 42 games, before moving joining Nottingham Forest in July 1931. On the same day, forward Bob Clark also came into the world. He signed from Newcastle United for £3,000 in January 1928, having helped them to the League title the year before. Florent Sinama-Pongolle bagged a brace with his first goal being our thirteenth from a substitute that season, a new club record, while his second was his ninth and last for the club. Xabi Alonso also struck twice, with our final goal being an outrageous strike from inside his own half, with the keeper making his way back from a corner. Scott Carson made his ninth and final reds appearance in this game. 1939 - We also faced the Hatters at the same stage of the Cup with left-winger George Paterson grabbing his only reds goal in a 3-0 Anfield victory. At last at the Bridge 2004 - Bruno Cheyrou’s first League goal handed us our first win at Stamford Bridge for fifteen years, as we beat Chelsea 1-0 despite the absence of Michael Owen and Steven Gerrard. El-Hadji Diouf was unjustly sent off, with his red card later rescinded, and Jerzy Dudek went off injured to be replaced by debutant Patrice Luzi for the last quarter of an hour, becoming the 52nd senior keeper in our history, and only the fourth man to never concede a goal in his entire reds career between the sticks, although this was his only senior outing. 1978 - We lost at Stamford Bridge, being knocked out of the FA Cup at the Third Round stage, with Joey Jones playing his hundredth and last game against his future employers. Death of a legend 1968 - Ephraim Longworth died in Liverpool. He signed from Leyton in June 1910, playing at right-back for us until 1928, making a total of 370 reds appearances in seventeen years without ever finding the net. He also became the first red to captain England. He then served as Reserve team trainer, before joining the ground staff. Happy birthdays 1989 - Left-back Emiliano Insúa was born in Buenos Aires. He made 62 senior appearances, netting his only goal in our Carling Cup defeat at Arsenal in October 2009. He initially arrived on loan from Boca Juniors in January 2007 before signing permanently for £1.675m seven months later. He joined Galatasaray on loan in August 2010, joining Sporting Clube de Portugal permanently a year later. 1906 – Forward Harry Race was born in Evenwood, County Durham. He signed from Raby United in February 1928, scoring eighteen times in 43 games before being sold to Manchester City in August 1930 for £3,000. 1931 - Centre-half Alex South was born. He struck once in just seven appearances after signing from his hometown club Brighton & Hove Albion for £5,000 in December 1954, before moving on to Halifax Town in October 1956, for whom he racked up over three hundred games. Management moves 2000 - Steve McMahon was appointed Blackpool Manager, with Gary Ablett arriving at the club on non-contract terms on the same day. He remained in charge of the Seasiders until June 2004, leading them to promotion via the play-offs in his first full season. Ablett only made twelve appearances for Blackpool before retiring. 2012 – Ex-reds reserves midfielder Jim Magilton was named as Melbourne Victory boss. He stayed for just three months, winning only two of his twelve games in charge. 2013 - Dean Saunders became Manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers, but he could not prevent them from being relegated to League One and was sacked after just four months in the job. Scouse git at Anfield 1967 - Scenes for the BBC comedy Till Death Us Do Part, starring Warren Mitchell as Alf Garnett and Tony Booth, were filmed during our 2-0 defeat of West Ham United at Anfield. Peter Thompson struck both goals to send us to the top of the table, as well as hitting the post. Knocking the Sky Blues out We have twice faced Coventry City in the Third Round of the FA Cup on this day in history. 1961 – Inside-forward Jimmy Harrower struck his 22nd and final reds goal with Roger Hunt and Kevin Lewis also netting as we won 3-2 at Anfield, although we went out at home to Sunderland at the next hurdle. 1970 - Bobby Graham struck our equaliser as we drew 1-1 at Highfield Road, although we won the replay 3-0 and got as far as the Sixth Round that season. He took charge of the reds for ten games in between Kenny Dalglish’s departure and Graeme Souness’s appointment, having another spell in temporary charge while Souness recovered from his heart operation. He died in March 2017. 1957 - Centre-half John Nicholson signed as a professional, but he could only make one senior appearance before joining Port Vale in August 1961, playing over 200 League games for them. International reds 1945 – Willie Fagan and Billy Liddell played for a Scottish Services XI as they lost 6-4 to Flanders in Brugge. 1992 - Stig Inge Bjørnebye won his first cap as a Rosenborg BK player, and fourteenth in total, as Norway played out a goalless friendly draw with Egypt in Cairo. 2002 – Ex-red Rigobert Song played for Cameroon as they won a friendly 3-1 in Burkina Faso. 2004 – Roy Hodgson managed the United Arab Emirates as they lost 3-1 to Bahrain in a Gulf Cup of Nations game in Kuwait. 2007 - Future red Lucas Leiva appeared for Brazil Under-20’s in the Sudamericano Sub-20 “Juventudjde América” as they beat Chile 4-2 in a group game in Paraguay. 2010 – Future red Kolo Touré played as the Ivory Coast beat Rwanda 2-0 in a friendly in Tanzania. 2024 - Mohamed Salah’s penalty hit the bar then rebounded in off the goalkeeper for an own goal as he captained Egypt to a 2-0 friendly win over Tanzania in Cairo. Other reds games 1995 – We shared a goalless draw in an FA Cup Third Round tie at Birmingham City, progressing after a replay and reaching the Sixth Round that season. 1989 – Kenny Dalglish took charge of his 200th game as we won 3-0 at Carlisle United in another Third Round fixture with John Barnes opening the scoring before Steve McMahon netted a brace as we started our journey to Wembley. 1956 – We beat Accrington Stanley 2-0 at Anfield in the FA Cup Third Round, with Billy Liddell nabbing both goals. Martin born 1984 - Centre-back Martin Škrtel was born in Handlová. The tough Slovakian signed from Zenit St. Petersburg for £6.5m in January 2008 to become our most expensive defender to date. He notched eighteen goals in 320 games in total, including one in our Carling Cup win at Wembley in February 2012, moving on to Fenerbahçe SK for £5.5m in July 2016. Unfortunately, he also put through his own net a joint club record eight times. 2010 - He skippered the side for the first time as we were held to a goalless draw at Anfield by Utrecht in our final UEFA Europa League group game. Dirk Kuyt played his fiftieth European game for the reds as the 37,800 crowd was boosted by free kids’ tickets. Forward Nathan Eccleston played his ninth and last reds game. Shaggy’s debut 1990 - Steve McManaman made his reds bow as we beat Sheffield United 2-0 at Anfield, thanks to goals from John Barnes and Ian Rush, who was making his 300th appearance for the reds. Arnell’s treble 1956 - Alan Arnell bagged a treble as we won 3-0 at Bill Shankly’s Huddersfield Town in a Second Division fixture. Most recently 2013 – We secured our record win at White Hart Lane as we comprehensively thumped Tottenham Hotspur 5-0, despite being without skipper Steven Gerrard and Daniel Sturridge. Captain for the day Luis Suárez bagged a brace, with Jon Flanagan netting his only reds goal. Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling also struck as Paulinho was sent off for the home side in the second half. Peter Crouch grabbed a brace with Steven Gerrard also on target. Rafael Benítez had heard of the death of his father in the build-up to the match but elected to stay in Japan. Winning in Belgium 1965 - We beat Standard de Liège 2-1 at their Stade Maurice Dufrasne in the European Cup Winners’ Cup to progress to the Second Round, 5-2 on aggregate. Roger Hunt and Ian St. John netted for the reds as we came from behind to win. Happy birthday Alf 1881 - Right-back Alf West was born in Nottingham. He struck six times in 141 reds games across two spells at Anfield prior to the First World War, first arriving from Barnsley St. Peter’s in November 1903 for £500. He helped us to the Second Division championship in 1905 and our second League title a year later, joining Reading in June 1909, becoming their club captain but he only stayed for a season before returning to Anfield in May 1910. He only played five times in this second spell before joining Notts County in July 1911. In comes Wilson 1897 - Wing-half Charlie Wilson signed from Stockport County on a free transfer. He bagged three goals in 91 reds games before becoming a Scout at Anfield in 1905, a role he held until the Second World War. The light went out 2002 - We suffered our fourth straight League defeat of the season as Milan Baroš’s strike was not enough to save us from a 2-1 defeat by Sunderland at the Stadium Of Light, despite Chris Kirkland’s penalty save from former Blue Gavin McCann, who had already scored, with Michael Proctor also on target. Big top-flight Anfield wins 1906 - We trounced Notts County 5-1, with Sam Raybould bagging a brace to add to an Alex Raisbeck penalty, and goals from Bill McPherson and Robert Robinson. This was the fourth consecutive home game in which we had notched at least five goals. Jock Montgomery was sent off for the visitors for a bad foul on Raybould. 1934 - Gordon Hodgson struck twice as we beat Tottenham Hotspur 4-1, with Berry Nieuwenhuys and Vic Wright also on target. All white 1973 - The reds turned out in all-white at Carrow Road, with Peter Cormack on target as we were held 1-1. This kit was worn despite there being no clash with Norwich City’s usual yellow and green combination, and in spite of the snow on the pitch that made the white shirts harder to spot. International goalscorers 1982 - A whole host of reds scored for their countries in European Championships qualifiers. Kenny Dalglish bagged a brace as Scotland beat Belgium 3-2 at the Stade du Heysel in Brussels, with one strike later being named as the BBC’s Goal of the Season. Graeme Souness skippered the side, which also included Alan Hansen. On the same day, Phil Neal netted as England thumped Luxembourg 9-0 at Wembley. Sammy Lee won his second cap in this game, with ex-red Ray Clemence in goal. Joey Jones won his first cap as a Chelsea player, and his 48th in total, as Wales drew 4-4 with Yugoslavia in Titograd. This is reputedly the first reds game that current skipper Steven Gerrard attended. Rafa’s record 2008 - Steven Gerrard headed the only goal of the game as we entertained Olympique de Marseille in a Champions League group game. This was Rafael Benítez’s 66th European game in charge, overtaking Bob Paisley’s club record. Happy birthdays 1915 - Post-war keeper Cyril Sidlow was born in Colwyn Bay in North Wales. He played 165 reds games after signing from Wolverhampton Wanderers for £4,000 in February 1946, helping us claim the League title in 1947. He also played in the 1950 FA Cup Final before joining Notts County in August 1952. 1947 - Ian Ross was born in Glasgow. He signed professional terms in August 1965 and netted four times in 69 appearances spread across six seasons at Anfield. He left for Aston Villa in February 1972 for £60,000, going on to captain them to the Third Division title, as well as the League Cup in 1975. 1949 - Centre-back Trevor Storton was born in Keighley. He had struck eight times in 118 League games for Tranmere Rovers before switching to Anfield for £25,000 in July 1972. He only played twelve times in two years before joining Chester, for whom he turned out more than 400 times. Red centurions 2005 - Steven Gerrard captained the reds for the hundredth time as John Arne Riise bagged the only goal of our Premiership game at Manchester City. This was the Norwegian’s 150th League outing for the reds. 1989 – John Lukic saved a penalty from John Barnes awarded for a Lee Dixon handball. However, we still beat Arsenal 2-1 at Anfield, thanks to later goals by Steve McMahon and Barnes himself as Barry Venison reached a century of reds outings. Alan Smith struck a late consolation for the Gunners, one of his nine goals past us. 1983 - Kenny Dalglish scored his hundredth League goal for the reds as we drew 1-1 at Ipswich Town, with future red John Wark also on target. He therefore became only the second player to score a century of goals in the top flight in both England and Scotland, after Liverpool-born Joe Baker who reached this milestone for Hibernian, Arsenal and Nottingham Forest. 1921 – Danny Shone netted as we lost 3-1 at Middlesbrough, with centre-half Walter Wadsworth playing his hundredth game for the club. Double off the bench 1969 - Two reds substitutes scored in the same game for the first time. Alun Evans and Roger Hunt added to a Tommy Smith penalty, to give us a 3-2 win over Portuguese side Vitória de Setúbal in the Fairs Cup, with Geoff Strong putting through his own net. However, it was not enough to progress to the Third Round, as we went out on the new away goals rule, with the referee having to inform the players that the game was over with the players and supporters waiting around for extra time. This was Hunt’s 285th and last goal for the club while full-back Chris Lawler was playing for the reds for the 300th time. Forward Steve Peplow was making his third and last senior reds appearance. 2014 – We drew 2-2 with Ludogorets Razgrad in a Champions League group game in the Vasil Levski National Stadium, leaving us needing victory in our final home game against Basel to progress. We went all the way in the competition that season, to claim it for the second time. 2015 – We beat Girondins de Bordeaux 2-1 at Anfield in a UEFA Europa League group game, on our way to the Final at the end of the season. Ins and outs 1913 – Winger Jackie Sheldon arrived from Manchester United for £300, going on to grab twenty goals in 147 reds games, playing in our first ever FA Cup Final in 1914. He retired in 1922 after breaking his leg, with his name forever tainted by being the go-between in our match-fixing scandal with Manchester United in April 1915. 1936 – Forward John Shafto signed from Hexham. He struck seven times in twenty outings before war intervened. 1937 – Left-back Ernie Blenkinsop left the reds to join Cardiff City after playing 71 reds games without scoring, having won 26 England caps by the time he arrived from Sheffield Wednesday for £6,500 in March 1934. 1970 – Midfielder Doug Livermore moved on to Norwich City, having made just eighteen appearances. He returned to Anfield as Roy Evans’ Assistant in 1994. He left in November 1998 following Gérard Houllier taking full control. 2020 – Future reds midfielder Wataru Endō signed a new contract with VfB Stuttgart having initially joined on loan from Koninklijke Sint-Truidense Voetbalvereniging in August 2019, making the move permanent the following April. He scored fifteen times in 133 games for Die Roten in total before joining the reds for a reported €19m in August 2023. Stopping off on loan 2009 – Two reserves keepers both left the club on loan. Dean Bouzanis joined Accrington Stanley, while David Martin went to Leeds United. Champions 2013 – Loanee winger Victor Moses was named Nigerian Footballer of the Year. 2004 - Future reds reserves striker Michael Nardiello came off the bench as England Under-16’s were held to a goalless draw at Bloomfield Road by Scotland. England won the Victory Shield that year, although the trophy had already been secured before this match. 2009 – Future red Raheem Sterling also featured in the Victory Shield as England won 2-1 in Scotland. He was one of Graeme Souness’s failed buys, arriving from Tottenham Hotspur for £2.3m in July 1992, scoring three times in 42 uninspiring appearances before leaving for free for Sunderland in March 1996 after a successful loan spell. We were able to take our feet off the gas towards the end, as John Welsh made his Champions League debut and we ended the match with Antonio Núñez at right-back and Igor Bišcan alongside Welsh in the centre of defence, although Jacek Krzynówek grabbed a late consolation – cue “Rocking All Over The World”! Rafa was also able to replace Dietmar Hamann with Vladimír Šmicer on the hour, in a replica of the switch made by his predecessor three years earlier that some people claimed had tipped the balance towards the German outfit. Yanks in 2007 - It was announced that George Gillett Jr. and Tom Hicks now owned 80.7% of the club’s shares. Happy birthday King Kenny 1951 - Kenny Dalglish was born in Dalmarnack, Glasgow. He signed from Celtic for £440,000 in August 1977 and bagged 172 goals in 515 games, helping us to countless honours, both as a player for which he is fêted by many as the finest ever on the pitch, and later in two spells as Manager. His greatest moments as a player include scoring the goals that clinched the European Cup at Wembley in 1978, and the first half of a League and FA Cup double at Stamford Bridge eight years later, while his efforts in the aftermath of the Hillsborough disaster ensure he retains an even more special place in our hearts. 1955 - Joey Jones was born in Bangor. He signed from Wrexham for £110,000 in July 1975 and made exactly a century of reds appearances, bagging three goals and helping us to win a European Cup, two League titles and the FA Charity Shield in his time at Anfield. He rejoined Wrexham for £210,000 in October 1978. Crazy Horse out of the traps 1967 - New record signing Emlyn Hughes made his reds debut in a 2-1 home League win over Stoke City, when Chris Lawler and Roger Hunt netted, while Peter Dobing bagged one of his eight goals past us. ‘Crazy Horse’ went on to make 665 reds appearances in total. 1953 – Centre-half Joe Maloney debuted as Bolton Wanderers held us to a goalless draw at Anfield. 1922 – Winger Cyril Gilhespy made his reds bow as we drew 0-0 at Blackburn Rovers. Danny Welbeck pulled a goal back, but Gini Wijnaldum struck late on. 1933 – Gordon Hodgson struck the only goal of the game as we beat Arsenal 1-0 at Highbury in a top-flight encounter as right-half Tom Morrison played his 200th reds game. Final outings 1939 - Left-half John Browning played his nineteenth and final reds game in our 1-1 home draw with Leicester City, with Phil Taylor bagging our late goal. 1897 – We beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-0 in L4 thanks to goals from Frank Becton, Harry Bradshaw and George Allan as forward Malcolm McVean made his 126th and last reds appearance. 1893 – We beat Nelson 3-0 in a Lancashire League meeting at Anfield. Matt McQueen struck twice, with his brother Hugh also on target as keeper Sydney Ross appeared for the 21st and final time. Beating the Geordies We have twice defeated Newcastle United on this day in history. 1995 - Robbie Fowler and Ian Rush struck as we beat them 2-0 in a Premiership match at Anfield. 1899 - We won a friendly at St. James’ Park 3-1, with George Allan bagging a treble. Thumping Oldham 1944 - Jack Balmer scored four goals as we trounced Oldham Athletic 8-1 at Anfield, in a game that counted for the Wartime League Cup as well as the League. Phil Taylor and Cyril Done both added braces. 1916 - We also beat them in another Wartime League match. European disappointment 1992 - We lost 2-0 at Genoa in the first leg of our UEFA Cup Fourth Round encounter. Unfortunately, we also lost the Anfield return to crash out 4-1 on aggregate. Red R.I.P.s 1959 - Left-half Tom Bromilow died on a train while returning from a scouting mission for Leicester City. He signed professional terms at Anfield in 1919, having asked for a trial straight from the army. He went on to make 375 appearances, scoring eleven times while helping us to claim two League titles in successive seasons in the 1920’s, as well as earning full international honours with England. 1964 – Forward Vic Wright died. He struck 33 times in 85 reds games after signing from Rotherham United in March 1934. He moved on to Plymouth Argyle in June 1937. 2021 – Forward Phil Chisnall died. He signed from Manchester United for £25,000 in April 1964, after ten goals in 47 United games. However, he never established himself at Anfield, netting twice in nine appearances, leaving for Southend United in August 1967. For Scotland 1922 - Left-back Donald McKinlay won his second and final cap for Scotland in a 2-1 victory over Northern Ireland at Celtic Park. Partick Thistle’s ex-reds keeper Ken Campbell also featured for Scotland, while Billy Lacey was playing his final game as a reds player for the away side. 1911 - Centre-half Alex Raisbeck played for the Scottish League against a Football League side. 1907 - Ex-reds inside-right George Livingstone won his second and final cap, and only one as a Rangers player, as the Scots lost 1-0 in Wales, also in the British International Championships. Reds defender George Latham was on the winning side. 2019 – Future red Calvin Ramsay played for Scotland Under-16’s as they were thumped 4-0 by Denmark in a friendly in Malta. Future reds in opposition 2014 – Alberto Moreno faced Emre Can in an Under-21’s friendly in Palencia, with Spain beating Germany 2-0, with this being Can’s last cap at this level while playing for Bayer 04 Leverkusen. Tosh leaves the Vetch 1984 - John Toshack was sacked as Manager of Swansea City, after just two wins in eleven games in this second spell in charge. Other reds games 2006 – Charlton Athletic held us to a goalless draw at Anfield. 1964 – We came from two goals down to draw 2-2 at Sheffield Wednesday. Ian St. John and Willie Stevenson were on the scoresheet. This was Bill Shankly’s 200th game in charge. 1961 – We drew 2-2 in a Second Division match at Portsmouth with Alan Banks and Johnny Morrissey scoring our goals. 1911 – We lost 1-0 at Tottenham Hotspur as Billy Minter grabbed one of his five goals past us, with Sam Hardy saving a Bobby Steel penalty. Keepers on the move 1995 - Sander Westerveld joined Vitesse Arnhem from Twente. He played 101 League games for them before moving to Anfield four years later. 2004 - Former reserves custodian Ian Dunbavin joined Morecambe on loan from fellow Conference side Shrewsbury Town on loan, making three appearances. Also on the move 1996 - Paul Stewart joined Sunderland on a free transfer following a loan period. He netted five times in 37 games, before being offloaded to Stoke City. 2011 – Ex-reserves forward Lauri Dalla Valle joined Bournemouth on loan from Fulham, netting twice in eight outings for the Cherries. 2019 – Former reds coach Paco Herrera was sacked as Manager of Unión Deportiva Las Palmas for the second time, having led them to only three victories in fourteen League matches. Beating the Geordies 2007 - Steven Gerrard, Dirk Kuyt and Ryan Babel were all on target as we won 3-0 at Newcastle United, with the visiting fans taunting troubled Toon boss Sam Allardyce, whose days were numbered at the club. Fernando Torres missed a host of golden chances, with boss Rafael Benítez further riling the club’s American owners by choosing to wear a track-suit, following on from his repeated statements in a pre-match press conference that “as always I am focused on training and coaching my team”. On the same day, future reds striker Milan Jovanović played for Serbia in a 1-0 Euro 2008 qualifying defeat of Kazakhstan in Belgrade. 1900 - Jack Cox was on target as we held the Geordies to a 1-1 draw at St. James’ Park. Biting the hand that fed 1984 - A John Wark brace gave us a 2-0 win over his old club Ipswich Town at Anfield. Mixed European fortunes 2021 - Sadio Mané played his fiftieth European game for the reds, with Mohamed Salah reaching the same milestone for us in the UEFA Champions League. Alisson Becker captained the side for the first time as we beat Porto 2-0 in a group stage game at Anfield, thanks to second-half strikes from Thiago Alcântara and Salah. 2009 – We beat Debreceni VSC at the Stadion Puskás Ferenc in Budapest. David N’Gog bagged the only goal of the game inside the first five minutes as we failed to reach the knock-out stages of the Champions League due to the other result in our group. 1998 - We were on our way out of the UEFA Cup as we lost 3-1 at Celta de Vigo in our Third Round first leg tie, after Michael Owen had opened the scoring. We were unable to turn things round in the second leg, which we also lost, 1-0. Current reds forward Iago Aspas was apparently a ball-boy in the away leg. Bon anniversaire 1947 – Former First-team coach Jacques Crevoisier was born in Delle, France. He worked under Gérard Houllier for two years after the departure of Patrice Bergues. Running riot against the Hornets 1987 - We beat Watford 4-0 at Anfield to return to the top of the table, with Steve McMahon, Ray Houghton, John Aldridge and John Barnes all on the scoresheet. 2018 – We won 3-0 at Vicarage Road, despite skipper Jordan Henderson being dismissed late on. Mohamed Salah opened the scoring before Trent Alexander-Arnold converted a free-kick, with Roberto Firmino tapping in the third. Reds centurions 1979 – Kenny Dalglish played his hundredth League game for the reds as we held Arsenal to a goalless draw at Highbury. 1956 – Centre-half Laurie Hughes played his 300th reds game as we drew 1-1 with Swansea Town in a Second Division meeting at Vetch Field. Alan Arnell struck our goal. Mixed fortunes against the Villains 1906 - Robert Robinson struck a brace with Arthur Goddard, Alex Raisbeck, from the spot, and Sam Raybould also on the scoresheet as we beat Aston Villa 5-2 at Anfield, with Tom Chorlton having a penalty saved. Joe Walters netted the first of his five goals against the reds, with Albert Hall also scoring. Our third goal of the game was the club’s thousandth in all competitions. 1923 - Villa left L4 with a 1-0 win in another top-flight fixture, with Len Capewell bagging the first of his six strikes against the reds. Stalemates with Mancs 1951 - We were held to a goalless top-flight draw by Manchester United at Anfield. 1990 - Manchester City also left L4 with a point when Ian Rush and Ronnie Rosenthal netted late on as we drew 2-2. Mark Ward opened the scoring after an hour, with Niall Quinn netting a last-minute equaliser. George signs on 1926 - Left-winger George Pither signed from Merthyr Town for £500. He only made twelve senior appearances, stepping in for the established Fred Hopkin, before joining Crewe Alexandra in May 1928. Stan Bowles and Frank McLintock struck for the visitors. Happy birthday Mac 1895 – Half-back John McConnell was born in Motherwell. He netted just once in 53 first-team appearances leading up to the First World War after signing from Airdrieonians for £80 in April 1909, including one in goal in only his second game! He left the reds to join Aberdeen in May 1912. Trouncing Rovers 1917 - We thumped Blackburn Rovers 7-0 in a Wartime League game at Anfield. Harry Lewis and Jack Waine both struck twice, with Thomas Bennett, Arthur Metcalf and Donald McKinlay all also on target. Management moves 1994 - John Toshack was sacked as Manager of Real Sociedad for the second time after three years with the club. 2008 - Brendan Rodgers was appointed Manager of Watford, leaving his coaching role at Chelsea. He led them to thirteen victories in his 32 games in charge, before moving to Reading the following June. 2022 – Dirk Kuyt was sacked as Head Coach of ADO Den Haag, after just five months in charge. In World Cup action 2022 – Alisson Becker kept a clean sheet as Brazil beat Serbia in a group stage game in Qatar. Transfer scoop foiled 1999 - The reds laughed off claims that we were about to sign AS Monaco defender Didier Baptiste. The News Of The World stated that “Houllier faces stiff opposition from Arsène Wenger who wants a long-term replacement for Nigel Winterburn”, and the story was picked up by many sources including the reds’ own Club Call service. However, it was soon revealed that Baptiste was merely a fictional character in Sky One’s “Dream Team” programme! On target 2015 – Future red Rafael Camacho scored for Portugal Under-16’s in their 3-3 friendly draw with Belgium in Penafiel. 1965 - Chris Lawler and Tommy Smith both appeared for England Under-23’s as they beat Yugoslavia 2-1 in a friendly at The Dell. Out on loan 2010 – Keeper Chris Kirkland joined Leicester City on loan from Wigan Athletic, playing just three times for the Foxes. On the same day, Tony Warner was released by Sc***horpe United after making just two first-team appearances. 2005 - Second string centre-back Zak Whitbread moved to Millwall on loan. He played 27 times before signing permanently seven months later. On the same day, ex-red Don Hutchison left The New Den to sign temporarily for Coventry City. 1995 - Ex-reds reserves defender Alan Harper joined Cardiff City on loan from Burnley.
