He notched twice in 35 outings, helping us to claim the Carling Cup before being sold to Stoke City for a reported £4m thirteen months later. 1984 – Midfielder Alberto Aquilani was born in Rome. He signed from Roma for a basic fee of €20m in August 2009, but injury restricted him to just 28 senior appearances, in which he notched only twice, although he did manage to register six assists in the League, only one less than Steven Gerrard. He was sold to Fiorentina in August 2012 after two seasons on loan back in his native land, with Juventus and AC Milan. Champions 2019 – Alisson Becker, Roberto Firmino, future red Arthur Melo and ex-red Philippe Coutinho all featured as Brazil beat Peru 3-1 in the Copa América Final in Rio de Janeiro to become South American champions for the ninth time. Mixed semi-final fortunes 2021 – Jordan Henderson and ex-red Raheem Sterling played as England beat Denmark 2-1 at Wembley to reach the European Championships Final after extra time, although they went on to lose the showpiece to Italy on penalties. 2010 – Fernando Torres and ex-red Xabi Alonso both featured as Spain beat Germany 1-0 in Durban to reach the World Cup Final. 1998 - Future red Bolo Zenden played as the Netherlands lost 4-2 on penalties to Brazil in the World Cup Semi-final in Marseille after the match had ended 1-1, with future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel saving two spot-kicks in the shoot-out. 2011 – Future reds Emre Can and Samed Yeşil both netted as Germany Under-17’s lost 3-2 to host nation Mexico in the World Championships Semi-final. On the same day, future red Mohamed Salah scored as Egypt Under-20’s drew a friendly 2-2 in Portugal. 2016 – Can played for the senior side as Germany lost 2-0 to France in the European Championships Semi-final in Marseille. Ince out 1999 - It was announced that Paul Ince would be leaving the club. Gérard Houllier said, “I have told him he is not in my plans for Liverpool. He should look elsewhere now.” He joined Middlesbrough for £1m three weeks later. He had struck seventeen times in 81 reds games during his two years at Anfield. Ending up fourth 1990 - Peter Beardsley, Steve McMahon and future red Mark Wright all played as England lost 2-1 to Italy in the World Cup third place play-off in Bari. Debuts galore 2018 – Rafa Camacho, Fabinho, Curtis Jones, Naby Keïta and Nat Phillips all made their reds bows as we thumped Chester 7-0 at their Swansway Chester Stadium in our opening pre-season friendly. Winger Harry Wilson bagged his first two goals for the club as we led 2-0 at half time. James Milner converted a penalty before Daniel Sturridge bagged a brace, with Ryan Kent netting his first for the reds and Danny Ings also on target. 1988 – Future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel debuted for Brazil as they beat the host nation 1-0 in a group game in the Australia Bicentenary Gold Cup in Melbourne. 1989 – Taffarel featured in Brazil’s goalless draw with Colombia in a Copa América group game in Salvador. Besian’s treble 2007 - Besian Idrizaj scored a hat-trick, his first reds goals, as we took a three-goal half-time lead in our opening pre-season friendly at Wrexham before eventually winning 3-2. Jordy Brouwer, Stephen Darby, Ryan Flynn, Martin Hansen, Ronald Huth, Krisztián Németh, András Simon and Jay Spearing all played their first reds games that day. In and out 2008 – Sarajevo-born forward Nikola Sarić signed for the reds from Herfølge Boldklub in Denmark. He had recently been named as Under-17’s Player of the Year by the Danish Football Association. He failed to break through to the first team and moved on to HNK Hajduk Split in June 2011. 2015 – Spanish right-back Javier Manquillo had his loan from Club Atlético de Madrid terminated. He had made nineteen senior appearances. Emile on the move again 2006 - Emile Heskey joined Wigan Athletic from Birmingham City for £5.5m. He struck sixteen times in 88 games for the Latics before moving to Aston Villa for £3.5m in January 2009. Ray on the way up 1982 - Ray Houghton signed for Fulham from West Ham United on a free transfer, five years prior to his arrival at Anfield. He netted 21 times in 145 appearances for the Cottagers, before moving on to Oxford United. Also on the move 2000 - Young midfielder Layton Maxwell joined Stockport County on loan. He scored twice in 23 appearances for them before joining Cardiff City on a free transfer a year later. His only reds appearance had come in a Worthington Cup tie against Hull City in September 1999, when he scored in front of the Kop. 2004 - Dominic Matteo joined Blackburn Rovers from Leeds United on a free transfer. Meanwhile, Nick Barmby also moved for free, joining Hull City from Leeds United. Matteo played just 39 times for Rovers before joining Stoke City in January 2007, while Barmby turned out on 197 occasions for his hometown club, netting 32 times, as well as taking over as Manager for five months. 1993 – Future reds first-team coach Kevin Keen joined Wolverhampton Wanderers from West Ham United for £600,000, having bagged thirty goals in 279 outings for the Hammers. 2008 – Ex-reserves forward Steven Gillespie joined Colchester United from Cheltenham Town for £400,000. He bagged 28 goals in 108 outings, stepping down a division to join Fleetwood Town in June 2012. 2011 - Robbie Fowler signed for SCG Muangthong United in Thailand, netting four times in twenty games while in Thailand, also taking over as coach for a while. Stephen Darby left Anfield on loan for Rochdale on the same day, playing forty times as they were relegated from League One. 2013 - Abel Xavier was appointed Manager of Sporting Clube Olhanense but was sacked just three months later. 2014 - Luis García signed for Indian Super League side Atlético de Kolkata, going on to win the Manyavar Most Exciting Player award as they claimed the title. On the same day, Tom Ince joined Hull City, netting once in thirteen outings before moving on to Derby County for £4.75m a year later. 2016 – Keeper Brad Jones signed for Feyenoord, helping them to clinch the League title in his first campaign, their first in eighteen years. 2017 – Right-back Stephen Darby joined Bolton Wanderers on a free transfer from Bradford City, after one goal in 239 games for the Bantams. 2021 - Mario Balotelli signed for Adana Demirspor, netting nineteen times in 35 games in his first spell with the Turkish side. Reaching the semi 2018 – Jordan Henderson and ex-red Raheem Sterling helped England to beat Sweden 2-0 in Samara, with Dejan Lovren on the winning side as Croatia set up a Semi-final meeting with England, seeing off host nation on penalties after their meeting in Sochi ended 2-2. Getting hitched 1983 - Bruce Grobbelaar married Debbie in Zimbabwe. In typical Brucie fashion, both the happy couple wore tracksuits! 2004 - Danny Murphy wed Joanna Taylor in Barbados, one month prior to his departure from Anfield 2006 - On a sadder note, former player, Coach and Manager Phil Taylor’s wife Maisey died. Larry in charge 1983 - Ex-reds centre-half Larry Lloyd was appointed Manager of Notts County. He was only in charge for fifteen months before he was sacked. They were relegated after three years in the top flight in his only full season in charge. Signing on 2005 - Dietmar Hamann signed a new contract for up to two years, depending on the number of appearances he made in the coming season. He moved on in July 2006 after 283 first-team appearances, in which he acted as a sturdy bulwark in front of the defence, scoring just eleven times. He helped us to claim the European Cup, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups, two UEFA Super Cups, two League Cups and the FA Charity Shield. 2011 – Reserves centre-half Andre Wisdom signed a new contract until 2014, subsequently extended further. He scored once in 22 senior games after making his debut in September 2012, moving on to Derby County for an initial £2m in July 2017. 2021 – Forward Oakley Cannonier signed as a professional, having joined from his hometown club Leeds United as an Under-12. He struck 41 times in all competitions in the 2021/22 season, signing a new contract in August 2022. 2022 – Defender Joe Gomez signed a new contract, having failed to score in 142 senior games to that point. He signed from Charlton Athletic for £3.5m in June 2015, so far helping us to claim the League title, UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup and League Cup. On the same day, Jordan Henderson was presented with his MBE at Buckingham Palace by Prince William Duke of Cambridge. Knocked out 2007 - Mark González won his twentieth cap as Chile were thumped 6-1 by future red Alexander Doni’s Brazil in the Quarter-final of the Copa América in Venezuela. On the same day, future red Luis Suárez played as Uruguay Under-20’s lost 2-0 to Zambia in their World Championship Finals group game in Canada, although they still qualified for the knock-out phase. Also in international action 2004 – Future red Javier Mascherano played as Argentina thumped Ecuador 6-1 in a Copa América group game in Peru. 1996 – Future red John Arne Riise featured as Norway Under-15’s lost 2-0 to Sweden in Sandefjord. -
Champagne Charlie 1953 - Graeme Souness was born in Edinburgh. He won five League titles, three European Cups, four League Cups and three FA Charity Shields after signing from Middlesbrough for £352,000 in January 1978. He moved to Sampdoria for £650,000 in June 1984 after 55 goals in 359 games. He returned to Anfield as Manager in April 1991, although his time as reds boss was considerably less successful, with just one FA Cup triumph before his departure in January 1994. 1990 - Keeper Péter Gulácsi was born in Budapest. He joined on loan from MTK Hungária in August 2007, signing on permanently in September 2008. The young Hungarian made it into our bench 51 times but failed to feature for the first team before joining Red Bull Salzburg in June 2013. 1994 – Another young custodian, Tyrell Belford, was born in Nuneaton. He arrived from Coventry City in the summer of 2009, aged just fifteen. He signed on professionally in July 2011 but moved to Swindon Town on a free transfer two years later after falling behind Gulácsi and Danny Ward in the pecking order. 2004 – Forward Oakley Cannonier was born in Leeds. He joined the reds at Under-12’s level, signing pro terms in July 2021 and then a new deal in August 2022. His most significant impact to date remains as the ball-boy who quickly handed the ball to Trent Alexander-Arnold for his “corner taken quickly” against Barcelona in our UEFA Champions League Semi-final second leg in May 2019. The first sighting of Saint Michael 1997 - Michael Owen netted on his reds debut, becoming our youngest ever scorer aged seventeen years and 144 days. He had come on as a substitute for Patrik Berger less than twenty minutes previously in our 2-1 defeat by Wimbledon at Selhurst Park, nabbing our consolation after a Jason Euell goal and one of Dean Holdsworth’s four strikes past the reds. 2006 - He became a father for the second time, to his first son, named James Michael. Missing out on the League 1991 - Our 2-1 defeat at Nottingham Forest handed the League title to Arsenal, their second in three seasons. Nigel Clough scored the opener with Jan Mølby netting our equaliser from the spot, while David Burrows was playing his hundredth game for the reds. Ian Woan bagged the winner. This game was postponed from the previous December. 1998 - We hosted the Gunners at Anfield after they had already clinched the League title, their first since that 1991 triumph. We thumped them 4-0, with Paul Ince bagging a brace, and Michael Owen and Øyvind Leonhardsen also on the scoresheet. Owen also had a penalty saved by Arsenal keeper Alex Manninger after Matthew Upson had fouled Steve McManaman. Tons up 2023 – Mohamed Salah reached a century of Anfield goals, the only strike of Brentford’s League visit, as he netted for a club record ninth consecutive home game. Meanwhile, Alisson Becker kept his hundredth clean sheet for the club. 1995 – Keeper David James reached a century of reds games in our 2-0 defeat at Aston Villa, with Dwight Yorke netting two of his eight strikes against us. Red endings 1939 – We lost 2-0 at Manchester United in front of just 12,073 spectators. Johnny Hanlon bagged a brace as we ended the season in eleventh. This game saw the final official appearances of right-half Matt Busby, right-back Tommy Cooper, left-half Jimmy McInnes, keeper Arthur Riley, defender Fred Rogers and winger Harman van den Berg. 1996 - Phil Neal’s son Ashley played his final reserves game. Reaching a super cup final 1986 - Kevin MacDonald netted his fifth and last reds goal with Craig Johnston also scoring as we came from behind to beat Norwich City 3-1 at Anfield in the Semi-final second leg of the Screen Sport Super Cup, with Gary Brooke on target for the visitors. Jan Mølby added a penalty as we went through 4-2 on aggregate, with Sammy Lee playing his 295th and last reds game. The reds were presented with the League title prior to this game. The Final against Everton was held over until the following season - which we won, of course. Big wins We have twice won top-flight fixtures 4-1 on this day in history. 1922 - We beat West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns, with a Harry Beadles brace, his final reds strikes, and goals from Dick Forshaw and Jock McNab. Stan Davies struck one of his four goals past us. 1933 - Sheffield Wednesday lost at Anfield, centre-half Tom ‘Tiny’ Bradshaw put through his own net with Gordon Hodgson and Dave Wright both striking twice, as we finished the season in thirteenth position. Also recently 2018 – We lost at Chelsea as Olivier Giroud headed in the only goal, one of his seven past us to date, as we stuttered towards a top-four finish in the League. Births and death 1971 - Former reserve keeper Jørgen Nielsen was born in Nykøbing Falster. The Dane never played a senior reds game, but he did sit on the bench 55 times following his £400,000 capture from Hvidovre in August 1997. 1969 - Another former reserve, midfielder Jim Magilton, was born in Belfast. He later had a successful career with Oxford United, Southampton and Ipswich Town before moving into management. 1915 - Tom Watson died. He had been appointed as reds boss in July 1896, doubling his salary to £300 a year from his time at Sunderland, whom he had led to three League titles and three FA Cup Semi-finals in four seasons. He went beyond the remit of Club Secretary at Anfield, involving himself in team selection, tactics and player recruitment, so becoming a Manager in all but name. He led the reds to two League titles and the Second Division championship and our first ever FA Cup Final, remaining in charge until his death. Nando the champion 2001 – Fernando Torres converted a penalty to hand Spain Under-16’s the European Championships, as they beat France 1-0 in the Final in the Stadium of Light in Sunderland, with fellow future reds Anthony Le Tallec and Florent Sinama-Pongolle both on the losing side. Firsts for Scotland 1959 - Motherwell’s Ian St. John won his first full international cap as Scotland beat West Germany 3-2 at Hampden Park. The Scots were managed by Andy Beattie, who had guested with the reds during the war, and later joined the backroom staff at Anfield after a successful management career. 1966 – Future red Kenny Dalglish made his first international appearance, bagging a brace as the Under-15’s won 4-3 in Northern Ireland. New ground approved 2008 – The revised design for the club’s new stadium in Stanley Park was granted planning permission by Liverpool City Council. However, work never fully got underway and these plans have now been scrapped. Management ins and outs 1999 - Jan Mølby was appointed Manager of Kidderminster Harriers. He led them to the Conference title in his first season, and then mid-table Third Division safety in the next two years. 2004 - Steve McMahon resigned as Blackpool boss, with fellow ex-red Mark Seagraves dismissed as Assistant Manager on the same day. McMahon had guided the Seasiders to 102 wins in his 350 games in charge, leading them back out of the basement in his first full season, and mid-table security in his following three seasons. Reds on target 2003 – Future red Alberto Aquilani struck for Italy Under-19’s as they beat Northern Ireland 2-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Andria. 2009 – Christopher Buchtmann scored as Germany Under-17’s beat Turkey 3-1 in a European Championships Finals match in Erfurt, while future red Jonjo Shelvey featured as England drew 1-1 with the Netherlands in Gera. 2011 – Samed Yeşil netted as Germany Under-17’s drew 1-1 with the Czech Republic in a European Championships Finals game in Serbia, with future red Emre Can also playing. Adam Morgan, Brad Smith and Raheem Sterling all featured as England lost 2-0 to Denmark in the same competition that day. 2017 – Future red Ozan Kabak netted for Turkey Under-17’s as they beat Croatia 4-1 in a European Championships finals group game in Rijeka. Signing on and off 2022 – Ex-reds reserves midfielder Conor Thomas was released by Cheltenham Town after twenty goals in 146 games since arriving in May 2018. 2017 – Scottish centre-back George Johnston signed professional terms with the reds. He moved on to Feyenoord in August 2019 after featuring in one pre-season friendly. 2011 – Midfielder Jay Spearing signed a new contract. He played 55 senior reds games without notching, moving on to Bolton Wanderers in August 2013 after a season-long loan there. 1992 - Future reds winger Mark Kennedy signed as a professional for Millwall. He went on to net twelve times in 54 games for the Lions, before moving to Anfield three years later. 1903 – Scottish inside-right George Livingstone was sold to Manchester City. He had signed from Celtic in May 1902 and bagged four goals in 32 games the following season. He went on to help City to claim the FA Cup in 1904. For John 1975 - We played in a testimonial match for Plymouth Argyle legend John Hore, with Brian Hall, Emlyn Hughes and Terry McDermott netting as we won 4-3 at Home Park, and Ray Clemence converting a penalty! Other games on this day 1985 – We won 2-0 at Coventry City, with Paul Walsh scoring twice past former reds reserve keeper Steve Ogrizovic. 1980 – Middlesbrough beat the reds 1-0 at Ayresome Park in our season closer. David Shearer struck the first of his four goals against us at the death. 1967 – We shared a goalless draw at Anfield with Tottenham Hotspur. Also in international action 1944 – Ray Lambert and future red Cyril Sidlow played for Wales as they lost 2-0 to England in a Wartime International at Ninian Park. 1964 – Gordon Milne featured in England’s 2-1 friendly defeat of Uruguay at Wembley. 1976 – Joey Jones played for Wales as they lost 3-1 to Scotland in the British International Championships in Glasgow. 2001 – Future reds Salif Diao and El-Hadji Diouf both featured for Senegal as they lost a World Cup qualifier 1-0 in Egypt. 2016 - Ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper managed England Under-17’s as they lost 2-1 to Sweden in a European Championships Finals group game in Azerbaijan. On the same day, ex-red Bernard Diomède took charge of France as they drew 0-0 with Denmark in the same competition. 2019 – Ki-Jana Hoever played for the Dutch Under-17’s as they beat England 5-2 in a European Championships Finals group game in Dublin, with Steve Cooper in charge of England. -
Cup final glory 1984 - Joe Fagan won his first trophy as reds boss as a Graeme Souness strike handed us the Milk Cup in a replay at Maine Road against Everton. 1902 - We also faced Everton with our friendly at Goodison ending goalless. In comes Cally 1960 - Ian Callaghan signed as a professional. He went on to make a record 857 reds appearances, netting 68 times as he helped us to five League titles, two FA Cups, one European Cup, two UEFA Cups, UEFA Super Cup and three FA Charity Shields. 1898 – Half-back Barney Battles re-signed from Dundee for £20, but only played once before joining Celtic for a third spell seven months later. He had won the title two years running in Scotland, for Hearts in 1895 and then Celtic, joining the reds for six weeks for the first time on loan at the end of the 1895/96 season where he featured in two Second Division games and three of the four Test matches as we secured promotion, for which he received a special gold medal and a cheque for a “handsome sum”. 1894 – Keeper John Whitehead signed from Everton. He only made three senior appearances across two seasons with the reds. Semi-final glory 1914 - We reached our first Cup Final, beating Aston Villa 2-0 at White Hart Lane thanks to a brace from James Nicholl. Ex-red Sam Hardy was in the Villa goal that day. 1908 - Anfield hosted the biggest ever FA Cup Semi-final win as Newcastle United beat Fulham 6-0. Reds debuts 1936 - Future boss Phil Taylor netted very late on to secure a point on his first-team bow, with Fred Howe also on target in our 2-2 draw at Derby County. Matt Busby missed a penalty as Sammy Crooks bagged one of his six goals against the reds, with Reg Stockill also on target. 1932 – Forward Ted Hancock debuted as we lost 3-0 to Huddersfield Town at Anfield, with Wilf Bott scoring the first of his five goals past us, Dave Mangnall netting the first of his seven against the reds, and George Crownshaw also on the scoresheet. 1953 - Forward Eric Anderson made the first of his 76 reds appearances as we were beaten 2-1 by Charlton Athletic at Anfield, with Jimmy Payne nabbing our consolation. Future red John Evans bagged one of his six goals against the reds, with Stuart Leary netting the first of his six past us. 1988 – Vitor Matos was born in Vila Nova de Gaia in Portugal. He joined the reds as Elite Development Coach in October 2019. 1866 - Scottish inside-right Jimmy Ross was born in Edinburgh. The ‘little demon’ signed from the ‘invincible’ Preston North End for a club record £75 in August 1894, helping us to the Second Division title, scoring 39 times in 85 reds games and captaining the side before joining Burnley in March 1897. He was a key player in the formation of the Association Footballers’ Union in February 1898, founded in protest at wage restrictions imposed by the FA, and sadly died aged just 36 in June 1902 having succumbed to an acute skin disease. 1895 - Keeper John Jones was born in Holyhead. He signed from his hometown club in September 1924, but only managed four senior appearances while Elisha Scott was injured. He returned to Holyhead in 1925. Trebles galore 1962 - Ian St. John scored a second-half hat-trick as we beat Rotherham United 4-1 in a Second Division game at Anfield, after Roger Hunt had opened the scoring in our most recent League meeting with the Merry Millers. This was his 37th League strike of the season, beating Gordon Hodgson’s club record of 36 set during 1930/31. Don Weston bagged one of his four goals against the reds in a game originally postponed from Christmas. 1942 - Billy Liddell bagged a treble in a 5-2 Wartime League defeat of Rochdale at Anfield. Dicky Dorsett and Stan Polk also struck. 1896 - Centre-forward George Allan netted a hat-trick as we achieved our record equal away League win, 7-0 at Crewe Alexandra. Malcolm McVean bagged a brace, with Joe McQue and Frank Becton also on target that day in what remains the most recent League encounter between the two sides. RIP Larry 2024 – Centre-half Larry Lloyd died. He was one of a rare breed to leave Anfield in his prime and go on to better things – helping Nottingham Forest to two European Cups, one League title, League Cup and FA Charity Shield. He had won League and UEFA Cup medals after joining the reds from hometown club Bristol Rovers for £50,000 in April 1969, appearing 218 times and notching five times. He was sold to Coventry City for £240,000 in August 1974. First and last goals 1959 - Louis Bimpson grabbed his 39th and final reds goal as we lost 2-1 at Lincoln City in a Second Division meeting. Andy Graver struck one of his five goals against the reds, with Roy Chapman also scoring. 1925 – Forward Tom Scott struck the first of his four reds goals as we lost 4-1 at Leeds United. Thomas Jennings scored the first of his seven goals past us, with Russell Wainscott nabbing the first of his five. Jack Armand and Jack Harris also scored for the home side as Matt McQueen took charge of the reds for the hundredth time. 1908 – Forward Charlie Hewitt netted his sixth and last goal for the reds in our 3-1 top-flight defeat at Bury. Tom Kay nabbed one of his five goals past us, with Billy Hibbert netting the first two of his thirteen. George Latham played his nineteenth and final reds game. 1894 – Left-back Duncan McLean bagged his sixth and final reds goal in our 3-2 Second Division win at Northwich Victoria. John Givens and Hugh McQueen also got on the scoresheet. Mixed fortunes against the Mackems 2010 – We beat Sunderland 3-0 in a Premiership game at Anfield. Fernando Torres bagged a brace, with his first strike being a spectacular effort from distance, while Glen Johnson was also on target. 1910 – We lost 2-1 in another top-flight encounter, with inside-forward Jimmy Stewart bagging our goal at Roker Park and defender Tom Chorlton putting through his own net. Willie Clark also struck for the home side. Off, off and off 1998 - Barnsley had Darren Bernard, Chris Morgan and Darren Sheridan all sent off as we won 3-2 at Oakwell, thanks to a Karl-Heinz Riedle brace and a last-minute goal from Steve McManaman. Neil Redfearn struck twice, including one from the spot. End of the road for Heighway 1981 - Steve Heighway made his 331st and final League appearance for the reds as we lost at Arsenal, with Alan Sunderland netting the only goal of the game, one of his six against the reds. 1967 - We also visited Highbury with Alf Arrowsmith on target in a 1-1 draw, a day after our goalless meeting at Anfield. Future Gunners boss George Graham struck one of his four goals past us. Up against the Foxes 2004 - We held Leicester City to a goalless draw at the Walkers Stadium, with Dietmar Hamann playing his 200th reds game. 1964 - Roger Hunt and Alf Arrowsmith were on target as we won 2-0 at Filbert Street, despite being without suspended skipper Ron Yeats. Gordon’s last 1931 - Gordon Hodgson won his third and final cap for England as they lost 2-0 to Scotland in a British International Championships game at Hampden Park. Future reds left-back Ernie Blenkinsop also played for England. African magic 2000 - A truly momentous day for Rigobert Song, who captained Cameroon to the African Cup of Nations, scoring the decisive penalty in the shoot-out in the Final against host nation Nigeria in Lagos after the game had ended 2-2 after extra-time. This was happening at the same time as we won at Highbury in the League for the final time, hanging on after Titi Camara’s strike to beat Arsenal 1-0. 2004 - Future red Momo Sissoko played for Mali as they lost their Third-place Play-off 2-1 to Nigeria in the same competition in Tunisia. New boss 1923 - Matt McQueen was appointed Manager after David Ashworth’s departure for Oldham Athletic two months earlier. He helped the reds to retain the League title at the end of that season, taking charge of the team on 229 occasions in all. He had played for the club in its first eight years of existence, making 103 appearances in every position on the park and scoring seven times, then joining the club’s board towards the end of the First World War. Red milestones 2023 – Fabinho played his 200th reds game as we beat Everton 2-0 at Anfield with Cody Gakpo bagging his first goal for the club as Jürgen Klopp secured his 250th victory as boss. Mohamed Salah scored before the break, with Gakpo netting early in the second half. Happy birthday Mamadou 1990 – Centre-half Mamadou Sakho was born in Paris. He signed from Paris Saint-Germain for £15m in September 2013, netting three times in eighty games before falling out with boss Jürgen Klopp and being sent off to Crystal Palace on loan in February 2017, making the move permanent for an initial £24m six months later. 1870 – Half-back Tom Cleghorn was born in Edinburgh. He signed from Blackburn Rovers in March 1896, scoring once in seventy games before moving to Portsmouth in August 1899. He helped Pompey to claim both the Southern Football League First Division and Western Football League First Division titles in 1901/02. Donald McKinlay put through his own net, with Harold Halse scoring the last of his four goals against the reds and Bobby Thomson also netting for the Blues as Elisha Scott saved a late penalty from Robert Abrams. 1982 - We also faced the Blues, losing an FA Cup Fifth Round tie 2-0 to the then-Second Division outfit at Stamford Bridge. Peter Rhoades-Brown and Colin Lee struck the goals. Super sub’s ton up 1979 – David Fairclough reached a century of reds games in our League meeting with Birmingham City, originally postponed from a month earlier. Luther at last 1988 - Luther Blissett finally breached the reds’ defence in a League game at Watford to score the first goal against us in all competitions for 994 minutes, a then club record. We still won comfortably in a mud bath, 4-1, with Peter Beardsley bagging a brace to take his tally to eight in as many games, to add to goals from John Aldridge and ex-Hornet John Barnes. Mixed FA Cup fortunes We have won three of our four FA Cup ties on this day over the years, with the other tie being our defeat at Chelsea in 1982. 1971 - A Chris Lawler goal saw off Southampton in the Fifth Round at Anfield, as we headed towards Wembley. 1993 - We visited The Dell in a League game, losing 2-1 with Don Hutchison netting for the reds. 1932 - Outside-left Gordon Gunson scored to defeat Grimsby Town at Anfield, in another Fifth Round tie, just a week after we had been thumped 5-1 by them in a top-flight fixture at Blundell Park. We were then knocked out by Chelsea at Anfield in the next round. 1897 - Our first cup tie on this day was played at West Bromwich Albion’s Stoney Lane ground, with Malcolm McVean bagging his 43rd and final goal for the club and centre-half Robert Neill also scoring in our 2-1 win. Mohamed Salah opened the scoring after the break, but James Maddison bagged one of his four goals pat us before Jamie Vardy netted on his ten against us with Harvey Barnes also on target in what was Jürgen Klopp’s 300th game in charge of the reds. 1904 – Right-half Bobby Robinson played the first of his 271 reds games as we were held to a goalless draw at Anfield by Stoke. Forward Joe Hewitt also debuted in this game, the first of his 164 appearances. 1909 - Left-half Jim Bradley struck his eighth and final reds goal in the first minute of our 4-1 thumping of Leicester Fosse at Anfield, with full-back Bob Crawford making his reds bow and outside-left Michael Griffin playing his fourth and final reds game. Arthur Goddard nabbed a brace, with Sam Bowyer also on target. 1890 – Frank Grayer was born in Southampton. He signed from his hometown club for £100 in July 1912 but only played one senior reds game, as right-back in our 2-1 home defeat to Manchester United in April 1914. He was so badly wounded during the First World War that he was unable to play football again. International debuts 2019 – Oakley Cannonier played for England Under-15’s for the only time as they lost a friendly 3-1 to Belgium at St. George’s Park. 2002 – Future red Sotirios Kyrgiakos won his first senior cap as Greece drew 2-2 with Sweden in a friendly in Thessaloniki. 1937 - Future reds right-back Billy Hood won his only international cap, playing for Ireland as they thumped England 5-1 in an amateur international in Belfast. 1909 - Ex-reds winger Arthur Berry won his only cap for England as they beat Ireland 4-0 in the British International Championships at Valley Parade. Reds keeper Sam Hardy also played for the home side, while future red Billy Lacey made his debut for Ireland in the same game. Friendly scoring for their countries 2002 - Dietmar Hamann netted in Germany’s 7-1 defeat of Israel in Kaiserslautern. Substitute Vladimír Šmicer was on target on the same day as the Czech Republic won 4-3 in Cyprus, with Milan Baroš also playing. Real Madrid’s Fernando Morientes struck as Spain drew 1-1 with Portugal in Barcelona. Left-back birthdays 1980 - John Arne Riise was born in Molde. He made 348 reds appearances, scoring 31 times, following his £4m arrival from AS Monaco in June 2001, but left for Roma for the same fee in June 2008. He helped us to win the European Cup, FA Cup, League Cup, two UEFA Super Cups and two FA Charity Shields in his time at Anfield. 1979 – Brazilian left-back Fábio Aurélio was born in São Carlos. He arrived on a Bosman free transfer in July 2006, netting four goals in 134 games, helping us to claim the FA Community Shield in his very first senior appearance. He was released for the second time in June 2012. Jocky on the off 1977 - Alan Hansen made his reds debut as we beat Derby County 1-0 at Anfield, with Terry McDermott on the scoresheet. This was Bob Paisley’s hundredth win as reds boss, which came in his 182nd game as Manager. 1949 - We also beat the Rams in a First Division fixture at home when Kevin Baron, Willie Fagan and Jimmy Payne all struck as we won 3-1, with John Morris bagging one of his seven goals against the reds. 1921 - Harry Beadles debuted as we won 1-0 at Chelsea courtesy of forward Billy Matthews’ fourth and last reds strike. 1904 - Sam Raybould bagged a brace as we won 2-0 at Lincoln City, with defender Tom Chorlton making his reds bow and centre-half Alex Raisbeck playing his 200th game for the club. Zico sets a record 1983 - Phil Neal made his 417th consecutive reds appearance in our 1-0 defeat at Manchester United, with Frank Stapleton on target. It was also his 365th consecutive League appearance – both still club records. He had to miss the next month after damaging a thigh in this game. 1998 - We also lost at Old Trafford, going down 2-0 thanks to goals from Dennis Irwin and Paul Scholes. Another record for St. Michael 2003 - Michael Owen scored his 21st goal in European competition, a new club record, to hand us a 1-1 draw at Slovenian side Olimpija Ljubljana in the opening game of our UEFA Cup campaign. Anton Zlogar’s opening goal was the 250th we conceded under the sole charge of Gérard Houllier. Owen has since been comprehensively overtaken by Steven Gerrard. Most recently 2023 – We beat West Ham United 3-1 at Anfield, with Mohamed Salah converting a penalty but Jarrod Bowen nodded in before the break. Darwin Núñez and Diogo Jota scored in the second half to secure victory. 2020 – Diogo Jota, Kostas Tsimikas and Rhys Williams all made their reds bows as we thumped Lincoln City 7-2 in a League Cup Third Round tie behind closed doors at the LNER Stadium. Xherdan Shaqiri netted his eighth and final reds goal with Takumi Minamino and Curtis Jones both bagging a brace. Marko Grujić scored his only goal for the club before Divock Origi scored as he captained the side for the first time, after Virgil can Dijk had left the pitch. 2016 – We trounced Hull City 5-1 at Anfield, with Adam Lallana opening the scoring. Ahmed El Mohamadi was sent off for handball with James Milner converting the resultant penalty. We went two goals ahead when Roger Johnson deflected in a Charlie Adam strike with Luis Suárez also on target, as Steven Fletcher pulled a goal back shortly after the break. 7,500 up 1994 – Ian Rush scored the 7,500th goal in the club’s history as we drew 1-1 at Newcastle United. Rob Lee had opened the scoring shortly after the break, with Philippe Albert dismissed for the home side late on. Ex-reds Peter Beardsley and Barry Venison both featured for the Geordies. Sent off again 2005 - We drew 2-2 at Birmingham City, with Neil Kilkenny being sent off for the home side on his debut, one of fifteen opposition players dismissed against the reds that season. Our goals came from Luis García and a Djibril Cissé penalty, with Stephen Warnock scoring an own goal and Walter Pandiani also on target. Off the mark 1892 – Forward John Miller netted on his reds bow as we thumped Bury 4-0 in a Lancashire League game at Anfield. Jonathan Cameron and Malcolm McVean also struck, while James Kelso played his only reds game. Kelso sadly committed suicide aged just 29, back in his native Scotland. 1958 – Outside-right Fred Morris scored his first reds goal as we drew 2-2 in a Second Division match at Brighton & Hove Albion, with Billy Liddell also on target. He signed professional terms in September 1968 and struck thirty times in 120 reds games, although he struggled to get picked in front of Kevin Keegan and John Toshack. He left the club to join Middlesbrough in December 1975 for £72,000. 1912 – Centre-forward Fred Howe was born in Bredbury in Cheshire. He joined on a free transfer from Hyde United in March 1935, netting 36 times in 94 outings before joining Manchester City in June 1938. He bagged three reds trebles, including notching four times in our record 6-0 derby victory at Anfield in September 1935. 1889 - Irish forward Billy Lacey was born in Enniscorthy, Wexford. He signed from Everton alongside centre-forward Tommy Gracie in a swap deal for £300 and winger Harold Uren in February 1912, going on to play 259 times for the reds, including the FA Cup Final in 1914. He helped us to two League titles in the 1920’s, netting 29 times before crossing the Mersey to join New Brighton in June 1924. 1875 - Centre-half Robert Neill was born in Govan, Glasgow. At five feet four inches he is probably our shortest ever central defender, scoring three times in 27 games after signing on loan from Hibernian in April 1895 and then permanently in May 1896. He left to join Rangers in April 1897. Debuting at Manchester City 1910 - Forward Sam Gilligan scored on his reds debut as we beat City 2-1 at their Hyde Road ground, with Jack Parkinson also on target. 1969 - Phil Boersma made his reds bow on his twentieth birthday in our 3-2 defeat at Maine Road, becoming our first ever League Cup substitute, coming on for goalscorer Alun Evans in this Third Round tie, who bagged an equaliser when George Heslop’s panicked clearance struck him on the chest and went in. Bobby Graham netted our other goal, while Neil Young scored the last of his four goals past us. Ian Bowyer and Mike Doyle also struck for the home side. Supersub back at Anfield 1985 - David Fairclough played for the visitors as Oldham Athletic lost a League Cup Second Round first leg tie 3-0 at Anfield, our hundredth match in the competition. Steve McMahon bagged a brace, with Ian Rush also on target. A rare defeat 1974 - Burnley won 1-0 at Anfield, inflicting one of just eleven home League defeats we suffered in the whole of the 1970’s. Full-back Ian Brennan stunned Ray Clemence from thirty yards with his first ever goal for the club. Signing on 1938 – Utility player Bill Jones signed from Hayfield St Matthews. He scored seventeen times in 277 games for us, with his appearances including the 1950 FA Cup Final when he was preferred to Bob Paisley. Bill won two significant medals in the 1940’s - first he was awarded a Military Medal for his part in the crossing of the Rhine in the Second World War, and then he won a League title medal in 1947 on his return to Anfield. He later scouted for the reds while his grandson Rob represented the club in defence on 243 occasions in the 1990’s. 2021 – Newcastle-born midfielder James McConnell signed pro terms with the reds. He had arrived as an Under-16 from Sunderland. He made nine senior appearances in 2023/24. Hooper steps in 1988 - Reserves keeper Mike Hooper replaced Bruce Grobbelaar, who had gone down with meningitis, as we won 3-1 at Southampton thanks to goals from John Aldridge, Peter Beardsley and Jan Mølby. Beating the Blues 1898 - Andrew McCowie bagged a brace, including a penalty, as we won 2-1 at Goodison Park. This was our first ever win across Stanley Park. Harkness on loan 1993 - Steve Harkness joined Second Division Huddersfield Town on loan. He made five appearances for the Terriers before returning to Anfield. 1987 - Reserves midfielder Ken DeMange joined Leeds United. He had never made a senior appearance while on our books, despite winning full international honours during that time. Double debutants 1924 – Future reds Gordon Hodgson and Arthur Riley won their first caps for South Africa as they beat Ireland 2-1 in Belfast. Diogo Jota scored as Portugal won a UEFA Nations League group game 4-0 in the Czech Republic, while Sadio Mané netted from the spot for Senegal while playing for the first time since joining Bayern München in their 2-0 friendly defeat of Bolivia in France. Steven Caulker captained Sierra Leone to a 4-0 friendly defeat in South Africa, his first game for them as a Fatih Karagümrük player. Joey the boss 2001 - Joey Jones was appointed Caretaker Manager of Wrexham, following the departure of Bryan Flynn. He was only in charge for two games, both of which they lost, before ex-Oxford United boss Denis Smith took over. On the move 1999 - Ray Houghton joined Conference side Stevenage Borough having been released by Reading at the end of the previous season. He only made three appearances, all defeats, in his one season at Broadhall Way. 1990 - Former reserves centre-back Mark Seagraves signed for Bolton Wanderers from Manchester City for £100,000. He made 195 appearances in five seasons at Burnden Park before moving on to Swindon Town. 1984 - Future reds loanee keeper Mark Prudhoe joined Birmingham City from Sunderland for £22,000. In comes Ronnie 1979 - Ronnie Whelan arrived from Irish side Home Farm on a free transfer. He went on to make 493 reds appearances, scoring 73 times and winning six League titles, one European Cup, two FA Cups, three League Cups and three FA Charity Shields before joining Southend United on a free transfer in September 1994. Births and death 1891 - Reds boss George Kay was born in Manchester. He arrived at Anfield in August 1936 and led us to our first League title in 24 years in 1947, and the FA Cup Final three years later. He was forced to retire due to illness in February 1951, and sadly died just three years later. Amongst the players who joined the club during his tenure were the great Billy Liddell and Bob Paisley. He had led us to a total of 140 victories in 354 matches in charge. 1883 – Forward Jack Parkinson was born in Bootle. He joined the reds in 1910, turning pro in October 1911. He struck 128 times in 219 games, moving on to Bury in August 1914. 1987 – Left-winger Peter Kippax died. He left his hometown club Burnley to join the reds as an amateur in 1948, having helped Great Britain to fourth place in the Olympics football competition that summer. He made one League outing, against Birmingham City in March 1949, having already netted in a Wartime League fixture for the reds against Bolton Wanderers in August 1945, before moving on to Preston North End in 1950. Stéphane Henchoz, Frode Kippe and Jon Newby all also made their senior bows, with keeper Lee Bracey sent off in the first half with the score 1-0 to the reds. Hull fought back from two goals to draw level through a John Eyre penalty and Colin Alcide before the reds restored order to proceedings. Jürgen’s European record 2023 - Jürgen Klopp secured his fiftieth European win in charge, a new club record, as we beat LASK 3-1 at the Raiffeisen Arena despite falling behind to a Florian Flecker strike. Rafa’s got his Dirk Kuyt 2006 - Dirk Kuyt signed from Feyenoord for £9m, with then Chairman David Moores having to lend the club the money for the transfer. He failed to make the break-through at Anfield, making only two League Cup appearances and one in the Mercantile Credit Centenary Trophy before his departure to Oxford United for £225,000 in February 1989. He played for a host of clubs in Scotland and England, also winning six senior caps for Scotland. Meanwhile, Alex Manninger made his senior bow in Austria’s goalless draw in Sweden, with fellow future reds Igor Bišcan and Bolo Zenden also in friendly action. 2007 – Future reds loanee Victor Moses scored for England Under-17’s as they drew 1-1 with North Korea in a World Championship Finals group game in South Korea. A good and bad day 2010 – Slovakian centre-half Martin Škrtel signed a new contract to tie him to the reds until 2014, although he later extended this. He notched eighteen goals in 320 games in total, including one in our Carling Cup win at Wembley in February 2012, moving on to Fenerbahçe SK for £5.5m in July 2016. On the same day, new signing Joe Cole was found guilty of speeding. He notched a total of 24 times in 79 reds games, including scoring in the UEFA Super Cup Final and FA Cup Final, but then spent a season on loan at Olympique de Marseille, for whom he signed permanently for £6.3m in July 2007. 1990 – Mario Balotelli was born in Palermo. The Italian striker signed from AC Milan for £16m in August 2014, only scoring four times in 28 games in his one season at Anfield, spending s campaign back on loan at AC Milan before joining Nice on a fee transfer in August 2016. 2010 - He joined Manchester City from Internazionale for €21.8m after 28 goals in 86 games for the nerazzurri. 1948 – Former first-team coach Patrice Bergues was born in Créteil, France. He worked with Gérard Houllier at Anfield between 1998 and 2001, later working with him at Olympique Lyonnais. 1997 – Nigerian forward Taiwo Awoniyi was born in Ilorin. He signed from Imperial Academy for £400,000 in August 2015, spending most of his time since out on loan before being sold to Union Berlin for £6.5m in July 2021. Joy in Charity We have twice claimed the FA Charity Shield on this day over the years. 1989 - Glenn Hysén made his reds debut as Peter Beardsley scored the only goal of the game against Arsenal at Wembley, in his hundredth reds match. Later, an Ian Rush header struck the post, landing in keeper John Lukic’s arms. 2001 - We made our third trip to the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff inside six months, as a Gary McAllister penalty and Michael Owen strike handed us a 2-1 win over arch-rivals Manchester United. John Arne Riise made his reds bow in this game, which was the first eleven-a-side first-class match to be played indoors, as the stadium’s roof was closed against the rain. Other signings 1982 – Forward David Hodgson arrived from Middlesbrough for £450,000. International milestones 2009 - Sami Hyypiä won his hundredth senior cap, captaining Finland in their 1-0 friendly defeat by Sweden in Solna. This was his first cap as a Bayer 04 Leverkusen player, while fellow ex-red Jari Litmanen played his 125th international. On the same day, Sotirios Kyrgiakos won his fiftieth cap for Greece, his final one as an A.E.K Athens player, as Greece lost 2-0 to Poland in Chorzów. Javier Mascherano also reached a half century of international appearances, skippering Argentina as they beat Russia 3-2 in a friendly in Moscow, with future red Maxi Rodríguez also in action. Stan’s treble 1996 - Stan Collymore bagged a hat-trick in our 4-0 victory at Burnley in a pre-season friendly. Robbie Fowler completed the scoring. Beating City We have twice beaten Manchester City at Anfield in League encounters on this day over the years. 1969 - We won 3-2 with a goal from Roger Hunt and an Ian St. John brace. Tommy Smith scored an own goal in this game with City keeper Joe Corrigan playing his first game at Anfield, with Ian Bowyer also on target for the visitors. 1972 - We triumphed 2-0, thanks to an early Brian Hall strike and a late Ian Callaghan goal. However, this game was marred by the dismissals of Larry Lloyd and City’s Wyn Davies. Lloyd later became the first player to fight a ban before the newly formed independent disciplinary tribunal, in relation to this sending off. Steve Heighway reached a century of reds games that day, while Tommy Smith appeared for the 300th time. Off the mark 2017 – Mohamed Salah scored on his reds bow as we were held to a 3-3 draw at Watford, Jürgen Klopp’s hundredth game in charge. We fell behind to a Stefano Okaka goal before Sadio Mané equalised. Abdoulaye Doucouré put the Hornets back in front, with Roberto Firmino equalising from the spot and Salah giving us the lead, which we held until a stoppage-time leveller from Miguel Britos. 2012 - Raheem Sterling scored his first reds goal as we beat Sami Hyypiä’s Bayer 04 Leverkusen 3-1 in a friendly at Anfield. Lucas and Andy Carroll were also on target. 1991 - Mark Walters made his first reds appearance, in a 1-0 friendly defeat at Tranmere Rovers. He joined from Rangers for a £1.25m fee the following day, where he had been a big success. Euro anniversary 1984 - We met Icelandic side Knattspyrnufélag Reykjavíkur in a friendly. They were the first team we ever played in European competition, almost exactly twenty years earlier. This meeting ended 2-2, with Michael Robinson and Phil Neal on the scoresheet after we had fallen two goals behind. 1990 - We returned to that part of the world, winning 2-0 at HJK Helsinki, with Ray Houghton and David Burrows on the scoresheet. Thumped in Spain 1988 - We were trounced 5-1 by Club Atlético de Madrid in the pre-season T Herrera Tournament. Substitute Ray Houghton scored our consolation goal at the Estadio Vicente Calderón. Alan Hansen dislocated his left knee in this game, keeping him out until the following May. 1983 - David Hodgson struck as we lost 2-1 to the same side in La Linea Tournament. 1986 - We held Real Sociedad to a goalless draw in San Sebastián. Other friendlies 1967 - Ian St. John, Willie Stevenson, Ron Yeats and Roger Hunt all netted as we beat German side Hannover 96 4-1 at their Niedersachsenstadion. 1995 - Steve McManaman bagged the only goal of the game as we beat Shelbourne 1-0 in the Yorkie Premier League Challenge at Tolka Park in Dublin. First and last caps 2009 - Glen Johnson won his first cap as a reds player with John Heitinga playing for the last time while with Club Atlético de Madrid as England drew 2-2 with the Netherlands in Amsterdam, with future red James Milner making his international bow. Dirk Kuyt was on target, while Ryan Babel and ex-red Emile Heskey also featured. Philipp Degen represented Switzerland for the first time since moving to Anfield, helping them to a goalless draw with Italy in another friendly in Basel. Meanwhile, Xabi Alonso and Álvaro Arbeloa both won their first caps as Real Madrid players. Albert Riera struck his final goal for Spain while on our books, with Fernando Torres also netting and Pepe Reina also playing as Spain beat FYR Macedonia 3-2 in Skopje. On the same day, keeper Nikolay Mihaylov won his first cap since becoming a red as Bulgaria beat Latvia 1-0 in a friendly in Sofia. More international goalscorers 2009 – Ex-red Milan Baroš converted a penalty as the Czech Republic beat Belgium 3-1 in a friendly in Teplice, while ex-red John Arne Riise scored as Norway thumped Scotland 4-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Oslo. Future red Raul Meireles netted for Portugal in their 3-0 friendly win in Liechtenstein. Also in international action that day were Yossi Benayoun, Péter Gulácsi, Krisztián Németh, David N’Gog, future reds Mario Balotelli, Milan Jovanović, Ragnar Klavan, Christian Poulsen, Nuri Şahin and Luis Suárez and ex-reds Nicolas Anelka, Robbie Keane, Harry Kewell and Nikolay Mihaylov, while John Toshack took charge of Wales. Olympian Raul 2004 - Raul Meireles played for Portugal in the Olympics Finals, coming off the bench as they lost a group game 4-2 to Iraq in Greece. In and out 2020 – French centre-half Billy Koumetio signed pro terms with the reds, having joined the Academy from Union Sportive Orléans Loiret Football in November 2018. He made his debut in the UEFA Champions League at Midtjylland in December 2020. On the same day, centre-back Morgan Boyes joined Fleetwood Town on loan, playing four times while with the Cod Army. Blackpool firsts 2003 - Michael Foley-Sheridan played his first senior reds game as we beat Fleetwood Town 6-1 in a friendly at Blackpool’s Broomfield Road ground. John Welsh scored his first goal for the first team, with Milan Baroš nabbing a brace to add to a penalty from El-Hadji Diouf and goals from Bruno Cheyrou and Anthony Le Tallec. Ex-reds on the move 1996 - Bruce Grobbelaar moved down the south coast, joining Plymouth Argyle from Southampton on a free transfer. He turned out 41 times in his one season at Home Park before joining Oxford United the following season. On the same day, Northern Irish youth forward Davy Larmour left Anfield to join Doncaster Rovers on a free transfer, having been part of the victorious FA Youth Cup winning squad earlier that year. He played 22 times for them without finding the net. 2015 – Chris Kirkland joined Preston North End from Sheffield Wednesday on a free transfer, but only played six times in his one campaign at Deepdale. 2016 – Forward David N’Gog signed for Panionios, scoring three times in sixteen games for the Greek side. 2020 – Ex-reds midfielder Adam Phillips re-joined Morecambe on loan from Burnley, netting ten times in 33 outings in this second spell. On the same day, former reds winger Mark Kennedy resigned as Head Coach of Macclesfield Town having rejected a new contract following the club’s relegation from the League due to a points deduction for financial issues. 2013 – Former reserves keeper Alexander Doni retired from playing. He joined the reds on a free transfer from Roma in July 2011 and played four times, as well as sitting on the bench on another 46 occasions. He returned to his native Brazil with Botafogo in January 2013 having apparently suffered a heart attack during a routine medical in the summer of 2012. 2009 – Winger Mark González signed for CSKA Moskva from Real Betis Balompié for €6.5m. He had struck ten times in 44 League games for the Andalusian outfit. 1991 - Former reserves defender Alan Harper rejoined Everton from Manchester City for £200,000.
