Liddell’s last 1960 - Billy Liddell scored his 228th and final reds goal, becoming our oldest post-war goalscorer, aged 38 years 55 days. We beat Stoke City 5-1 in the Second Division at Anfield, with Jimmy Harrower adding a brace, and Roger Hunt and Dave Hickson also netting. Hickson was in fact on target for the fourth consecutive match, in which time he had struck six times in total. A new boss 1951 – Don Welsh was officially appointed Manager. His contract awarded him £1,500 per year, with an additional annual £500 for expenses. He took charge of 232 reds games, winning just 81, and has the indignity of being our first boss to get the sack, after presiding over our relegation from the top flight in 1954, and failing to lead us back to the promised land. A manc thrashing 2023 – We secured our record victory over Manchester United, thumping them 7-0 at Anfield, their joint worst ever defeat. Cody Gakpo gave us the lead shortly before the break, but the floodgates opened in the second half. Darwin Núñez headed in before Gakpo netted again. Mohamed Salah bagged a brace as he became our all-time top Premier League goalscorer. Núñez nodded in again, with Roberto Firmino completing the scoring. Fernando’s treble 2008 - Fernando Torres scored a hat-trick as we thumped West Ham United 4-0 at Anfield, with Steven Gerrard completing the scoring. This was his second successive home treble. 2022 – Sadio Mané bagged the only goal of the Hammers’ League visit to Anfield. Crazy Horse OBE 1980 - Emlyn Hughes was presented with the OBE by Her Majesty the Queen. ‘Crazy Horse’ played 665 times in his twelve years at Anfield, netting 49 times and winning two European Cups, four League titles, two UEFA Cups, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and two FA Charity Shields. His greatest season was probably 1976/77 when he captained the side to within a whisker of the treble, as well as being voted the Football Writers’ Player of the Year. Sadly, he died in November 2004. More goal feasts against the Potters 1983 - We beat Stoke City 5-1 at Anfield again. Kenny Dalglish scored twice, with the other goals coming from Phil Neal, Craig Johnston and Graeme Souness. Kenny netted his 300th senior club goal that day as Ian Rush reached a century of reds outings, with future Toffee Paul Bracewell on target for the visitors. 1955 - A Johnny Evans brace was not enough as we lost 4-2. Mixed fortunes against the Hoops We faced Queens Park Rangers twice on this day in the 1980’s. 1986 - We were held 2-2 at Anfield in the second leg of our League Cup Semi-final, despite twice taking the lead on the night. Steve McMahon and Craig Johnston netted our goals, but Jan Mølby missed a penalty and Gary Gillespie and Ronnie Whelan both scored own goals. This put us out of the competition, as we had lost the first game 1-0 away from home. Bruce Grobbelaar was playing his 300th reds game. 1988 - We won at Loftus Road in the League, with John Barnes scoring the only goal of the game. This was our last outing on their controversial plastic playing surface. Alex Watson made the first of his nine senior appearances in this game. Happy birthdays 1988 - Damien Plessis was born in Neuville-aux-Bois, France. He signed in August 2007 from Olympique Lyonnais on a free transfer, making an impressive debut at Arsenal in the following April. He struck once in eight senior appearances, before being sold to Panathinaikos in August 2010. 1896 - Centre-half David Pratt was born in Lochore, Fife. He played 84 times for the reds after signing from Bradford City in January 1923, scoring just once and being known for his long throw-ins. He left Anfield to sign for Bury in November 1927. 1955 – Reserves keeper Bob Wardle was born in Halifax. He joined from Shrewsbury Town in a straight swap for Steve Ogrizovic in August 1982, but never made our first team, and was forced to retire through injury inside a year. 1986 - Former reserves keeper Paul Willis was born in Northern Ireland. He was released in the summer of 2006 after failing to break through to the first team, later playing for AFC Liverpool. 1993- Centre-back Stephen Sama was born in Bamenda, Cameroon. He signed from Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund in July 2009. He never played a senior game, moving on to VfB Stuttgart in September 2014. 1955 – Scottish keeper Bill McCann died. He signed from Abercorn in May 1894, playing seventeen times before moving on the following March. Beginning and end 2005 - Scott Carson made his reds debut as we lost 1-0 at Newcastle United thanks to a goal from Laurent Robert. This was Graeme Souness’ first win over the reds as opposing Manager, at the eleventh attempt. 1977 - We also faced the Geordies when Steve Heighway grabbed the only goal of the game at Anfield. Phil Neal had a spot-kick saved by keeper Mike Mahoney. 1949 – We lost 2-1 at Chelsea despite going in at the break ahead through Jimmy Payne. Ex-red Robert Matthews won his second Welsh cap in this game, the only one he won while a Bristol City player. Reds right-half Maurice Parry also played for Wales. 2014 – Daniel Sturridge scored the only goal of Roy Hodgson’s England’s friendly meeting with Denmark at Wembley. Mohamed Salah struck while winning his first cap as a Chelsea player in Egypt’s 2-0 friendly defeat of Bosnia-Herzegovina in Austria. Ex-red Raul Meireles netted as Portugal thumped Cameroon 5-1 in Leiria, while Gabriel Paletta made his senior debut for Italy as they lost 1-0 to Spain in Madrid. Sadio Mané struck his last goal as a Red Bull Salzburg player as Senegal drew 1-1 with Mali in a friendly in Dakar. Future red Andy Robertson also won his first cap in Scotland’s 1-0 win in Poland. Tom Ince won his first cap while on loan at Crystal Palace as England Under-21’s beat Wales 1-0 in a European Championships qualifier, with Nuri Şahin playing for Turkey for the final time as a Real Madrid player as Turkey beat Sweden 2-1 in Ankara. On the move 1996 - Future red Steve Finnan joined Notts County on loan from Birmingham City. He played twenty times, before signing permanently seven months later. 2015 – Former reds left-winger Albert Riera re-signed for his first club Real Club Deportivo Mallorca, having been sacked by Udinese four months earlier. He played just six times in this second spell. 2024 - Bournemouth announced the departure of Richard Hughes as their Technical Director at the end of the season. Happy birthday Mr. Kennedy 1954 - Alan Kennedy was born in Sunderland. He is best remembered for his winning strikes in two European Cup Finals, but also won five League titles, four League Cups and three FA Charity Shields after moving from Newcastle United for £330,000 in August 1978, making 359 appearances and notching twenty times before joining his hometown club for £100,000 in September 1985. 1911 - Frank O’Donnell was born in Buckhaven, Fife. He struck once in two Wartime appearances for the reds. He gained six Scotland caps as well as scoring for Preston North End in every round of the FA Cup in 1937, including the Final. 1990 – Scottish reserves midfielder Gary Mackay-Steven was born in Thurso. He joined the reds in 2007 but failed to break through before being released two years later. 2006 – Forward Keyrol Figueroa was born in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. He signed pro terms with the reds in May 2024 and represents the USA at Under-17’s level even though his father was a senior international with Honduras. Happy birthday Pepe 1982 - Keeper Pepe Reina was born in Madrid. He arrived from Villarreal for £6m in July 2005, keeping a remarkable 177 clean sheets in his 394 games and helping us to claim the FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FA Charity Shield before moving to Bayern München for £2m in August 2014 after spending the previous campaign on loan at SSC Napoli. He notched 107 times in 254 outings in his first spell with Spurs before moving to Anfield for £19.3m in July 2008. 2005 - Michael Owen joined Newcastle United from Real Madrid for £17m after a proposed move back to Anfield failed to materialise. He bagged thirty goals in 79 games for the Toon as serious injuries interrupted his time in the north east. On the same day, Salif Diao joined Portsmouth on loan. He only managed to make thirteen appearances for Pompey and was not taken on permanently. In comes David 2008 – Forward David N’Gog signed from Paris Saint-Germain for £1.5m. He struck nineteen times in 94 reds outings, although he only started on 41 of those occasions. He was sold to Bolton Wanderers for £4m in August 2011. Treble debutants 1999 - Dietmar Hamann, Sami Hyypiä and goalscorer Vladimír Šmicer all played their first reds games as we beat Feyenoord 2-0 to claim the Carlsberg Belfast Challenge trophy. The other goal came from Titi Camara, with his second reds strike. Happy birthday Harry 1870 - Keeper Harry Storer was born in Butterley, Derbyshire. He signed from Woolwich Arsenal for £75 in December 1895, taking over from the versatile Matt McQueen between our sticks. He made a total of 121 reds appearances before retiring in 1901. Unfortunately, he died in April 1908 aged just 37. Justice denied 2000 - The jury in the Hillsborough disaster trial was discharged after failing to reach a verdict on manslaughter charges against retired Chief Superintendent David Duckenfield, the police officer in charge on the day. The jury spent 25 hours deliberating the charges, but were unable to come to an agreement. The judge eventually ruled against a retrial. Reds in Australia 2013 – We played our first ever game in Australia with more than 95,000 fans at the Melbourne Cricket Ground to see Steven Gerrard and Iago Aspas net in a 2-0 defeat of Melbourne Victory. FC Kaiserslautern in the Fritz-Walter-Stadion. Charnock impresses 1996 - Midfielder Phil Charnock scored the only goal of the game as we beat Crewe Alexandra in a pre-season friendly at Gresty Road. He only made four senior appearances in early 1936, after signing from Everton that January, moving on to Bristol Rovers just two months later. He only played five times for the reds and went on to make 26 League appearances for Southport. Writing history 2002 - It was announced that a new weekly magazine called LFC would be launched the following month, the first official weekly magazine dedicated to a single Premiership club. Rick Parry said, “We feel our fans are ready for the new weekly ‘LFC’ magazine which will give them a real insight into life at Anfield and Melwood.” It was eventually replaced by a monthly publication after 513 issues. He helped them to finish fifth in the Bundesliga in his first season and played a total of 46 League games for them before stepping down as a player in May 2007 to become assistant coach. He played just twice for the Tigers before being released in February 2010. 2005 - Chris Kirkland joined West Bromwich Albion on loan after just 45 first-team games for the reds since his £6m signing from Coventry City in August 2001. He made 184 reds appearances following his £3.75m transfer from Racing Club de Lens, scoring nineteen times, including a crucial strike in Istanbul. He signed for us on his 26th birthday, although he did not officially become a Liverpool player until 1st July 1999, and left for Girondins de Bordeaux in June 2005, having helped us to claim the Champions League, UEFA Cup, FA Cup and two League Cups. 1965 - Nicky Tanner was born in Bristol. He signed from Bristol Rovers for £20,000 in August 1988 and made a total of 59 appearances for the reds under Graeme Souness, netting his only goal at Goodison Park in December 1991. Sami’s farewell 2009 - We beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 at Anfield in our final game of the season, with Xabi Alonso playing his 210th and final reds game and Sami Hyypiä making an emotional farewell after his 464th and last appearance for the club. We extended our lead after Alan Hutton deflected in a Dirk Kuyt effort to register our 150th own goal, before ex-red Robbie Keane reduced the deficit with the most recent of his five goals past us. He had been in sole charge since November 1998, leading us to the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, two League Cups, UEFA Super Cup and FA Charity Shield. He twice got us into trouble, firstly when we made an illegal approach to sign him from Queen’s Park in September 1911. He was then involved in the 1915 match-fixing scandal with Manchester United. He played 113 reds games without scoring, including the 1914 FA Cup Final, moving on to Port Vale in May 1920. New York friendlies We have twice played friendlies in New York on this day in history. 1953 - We beat 1. He made 22 League appearances before moving back to England to join Birmingham City. 1948 – Right-half Roy Saunders signed on a free transfer from Hull City. He was the father of 1990’s reds striker Dean and died in January 2009. 2012 – Reserves forward David Amoo signed for Preston North End, netting once in 24 games before joining Tranmere Rovers in January 2013. On the same day, left-back Fábio Aurélio joined Grêmio back in his native Brazil, having been released for the second time. Cardiff glory once more 2006 - We claimed the FA Cup for the seventh time, in a game dubbed the ‘Gerrard Final’ after Steven Gerrard struck two stupendous shots. We went 2-0 down to West Ham United through a Jamie Carragher own goal followed by a Pepe Reina fumble that Dean Ashton profited from. Djibril Cissé gave us hope before half-time with Gerrard equalising after the break, his 24th goal in his 79th and final reds outing. Future red Paul Konchesky then struck a long-range fluke, our hundredth goal against under Rafael Benítez, with Stevie G scoring a stunning long-range effort as the game moved into injury time, a goal that was later voted as the BBC’s Goal of the Season. Extra time saw no further score, with the reds triumphing 3-1 in the penalty shoot-out thanks to Pepe Reina’s three saves and successful strikes from Didi Hamann, playing his 283rd and last reds game, Gerrard and John Arne Riise. Fernando Morientes made his 61st and final reds appearance in this game, coming on for Harry Kewell who limped out of his third successive major final. Stevie the best 2009 - Steven Gerrard was named the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year, following a season in which he had notched 24 times in 44 reds outings. Kenny’s second farewell 2012 - Kenny Dalglish took charge of his last game as Manager as we lost 1-0 at Brendan Rodgers’ Swansea City, with Danny Graham bagging the only goal of the game late on as we finished the season in a disappointing eighth spot. Craig Bellamy, Alexander Doni, Dirk Kuyt and Maxi Rodríguez all played their final games for the club. Future reds Joe Allen and Steven Caulker were on the winning side. Two-ton Mo 2021 – Mohamed Salah played his 200th reds game as we won 4-2 at Manchester United behind closed doors. We fell behind to a deflected Bruno Fernandes strike with Diogo Jota levelling the scores. Roberto Firmino netted either side of the break. Marcus Rashford reduced the arrears with one of his seven goals against us to date, before Salah completed the scoring with his 124th reds goal in the final minute. Most recently 2024 – We were held to a 3-3 draw at Aston Villa in what was Jürgen Klopp’s last away game in charge, despite leading by two goals with only five minutes to go. We took the lead after just two minutes when keeper Emiliano Martínez fumbled Harvey Elliott’s deflected cross into his own net. Youri Tielemans levelled but Cody Gakpo restored our lead. Jarell Quansah headed in his first League goal f or the reds after the break, but John Durán struck twice late on to ensure a share of the spoils. More red departures 1997 - Stan Collymore was sold to Aston Villa for £7m. He had bagged 35 goals in 81 reds games after his British record £8.5m signing from Nottingham Forest in July 1995. He went on to net fifteen times in 61 games for the Villains before joining Leicester City on a free transfer in February 2000. 1967 - We lost our final game of the season 3-1 at home to Blackpool, who nonetheless finished bottom of the table. Peter Thompson bagged our consolation. Outside-right David Wilson played his only reds game as we ended the season in fifth, while right-half Gordon Milne made his 282nd and final reds outing, moving on to Blackpool later that same day after eighteen goals in 282 reds outings. Ray Charnley struck the last of his eight goals against us, with Graham Oates and Jimmy Robson also scoring. Dom at last 2018 – We thumped Brighton & Hove Albion 4-0 at Anfield to secure fourth place in the League and a place in the following season’s UEFA Champions League, with Adam Lallana reaching a century of League appearances for the reds. Mohamed Salah scored his 32nd League goal of the season, a record in a 38-game Premier League campaign for any club. Dejan Lovren also headed in before the break, with Dominic Solanke finally bagging his first reds goal in his 27th and last game for the club. Andy Robertson completed the scoring late on with his first for the reds, with Danny Ings making his 25th and final Liverpool appearance and Ben Woodburn appearing for the eleventh and last time. Gary Mac departs 2002 - Gary McAllister officially returned to Coventry City on a free transfer, having been appointed their player/manager three weeks previously. 1954 – Birkenhead-born centre-forward Jack Smith was sold to Torquay United after fourteen goals in 59 reds games since signing from Bromborough Pool in March 1951. Robbie’s second farewell 2007 - Robbie Fowler played the 39th and final game of his second spell with the reds, to take him to 369 appearances in total. Italian keeper Daniele Padelli played his only reds game as already-relegated Charlton Athletic held us to a 2-2 draw at Anfield. Darren Bent struck one of his five goals past the reds, with Matt Holland also on target. Happy birthday Bill 1921 - Utility player Bill Jones was born in Whaley Bridge, Derby. He signed from Hayfield St. Matthews in September 1938 and scored seventeen times in 277 games for us, with his appearances including the 1950 FA Cup Final when he was preferred to Bob Paisley. Bill won two significant medals in the 1940’s - first he was awarded a Military Medal for his part in the crossing of the Rhine in the Second World War, and then he won a League title medal in 1947 on his return to Anfield. He later scouted for the reds while his grandson Rob represented the club in defence on 243 occasions in the 1990’s. Cally for England 1966 - Ian Callaghan played for England in their 1-1 draw with a ‘Young England’ side, as part of the preparations for the World Cup. Cally made one appearance in the Finals, against France. Other games on this day We had only played three first-class games on this day in history prior to the 2006 FA Cup Final, all in the First Division. 1963 - We lost 1-0 at Bolton Wanderers, who narrowly escaped relegation, in a game originally postponed from three months earlier. 1989 - We beat Wimbledon 2-1 at Plough Lane, with John Aldridge and John Barnes scoring. We went behind to an Alan Hansen own goal in the first half, playing his 400th League game for the club. Tranmere Rovers’ Bobby Tynan grabbed our goal, while Bobby Charlton was amongst the scorers for the visitors. Roker’s final roar 1997 - The last ever match at Roker Park was played, as we lost to Sunderland in a friendly with John Mullin grabbing the only goal of the game. Another trophy 1933 – We beat Bolton Wanderers 2-1 at Anfield to claim the Lancashire Senior Cup for the fifth time. Alf Hanson and Dave Wright were on target. 1944 - We also faced Wanderers in the second leg of the Final in the same competition, winning 3-2 at Burnden Park thanks to a Don Welsh brace and a goal from Cyril Done to claim the trophy 6-3 on aggregate. Scoring against the World Champions 1980 - David Johnson bagged a brace, with ex-red Kevin Keegan nabbing the other, as England beat Argentina 3-1 in a friendly at Wembley. These were Johnson’s last international goals, and only ones as a reds player. 2018 – Bobby Duncan scored for England Under-17’s as they beat Norway 2-0 in their European Championships Quarter-final in Burton-on-Trent, with ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper in charge. 2017 – Cooper also managed England Under-17’s as they beat the Republic of Ireland 1-0 in a Quarter-final in the same competition in Croatia, with Rhian Brewster in action. New signings 1919 - Outside-right Harold Wadsworth signed pro terms having arrived from Tranmere Rovers as an amateur in January 1918. He struck three times in 55 reds games, many alongside his brother, centre-half Walter, moving on to Leicester City for £250 in June 1924. 1914 – Forward Wilf Bartrop arrived from Barnsley for £900, playing three games before joining the Royal Field Artillery in 1915. He was killed in wartime action in November 1918. Three for Billy 1914 - Forward Billy Lacey scored a hat-trick as we won 6-2 in a friendly at Swedish side Djurgårdens IF. He signed from St. Johnstone in March 1928, playing twelve times before joining Watford eight months later, whom he later twice managed. Clinching the title 1979 - A 3-0 defeat of Aston Villa at Anfield handed us our eleventh League title, thanks to goals from Alan Kennedy, Kenny Dalglish and Terry McDermott. We ended the season with a record 68 points and record goal difference of +69, having only conceded sixteen League goals during the entire campaign. This game was originally postponed from New Year’s Day. The arrival of an Anfield legend 1939 - Left-half Bob Paisley signed from Bishop Auckland for a £10 signing-on fee, and £5 per week. He served the club well in his 277 games, notching twelve times, before joining the training staff. He eventually succeeded Bill Shankly in 1974, becoming the most successful manager in English football history. 1894 - A rather less notable Anfield servant arrived in L4. Defender James Cameron signed from Rangers, going on to make only four first-team appearances. 1909 – Outside-left John McDonald also arrived from Rangers, netting four goals in 81 reds games before joining Newcastle United in May 1912. 1933 - Left-back Jack Tennant arrived at Anfield from Torquay United. He went on to appear 42 times for the reds without notching before joining Bolton Wanderers in January 1936, later guesting with the reds during the war. Cup final disappointment 1971 - Arsenal completed the double, beating us 2-1 at Wembley in the FA Cup Final. Bruce Grobbelaar saved a Teddy Sheringham penalty, our first spot-kick save at Anfield in the Premier League. Sheringham got on the scoresheet anyway with one of his seven goals against the reds, as did Steve Sedgley for the visitors. First strikes 1964 - Forward Bobby Graham scored his first reds goal as we trounced Boston Metros 8-1 in the first friendly on our US tour. Heading off 1999 – Midfielder Jean-Michel Ferri made his second and final reds appearance as we lost 1-0 at Sheffield Wednesday thanks to a late Richard Cresswell header. Ferri came on as a late substitute for Jamie Redknapp. 1970 – Left-back Peter Wall was sold to Crystal Palace for £30,000. He had arrived at Anfield from Wrexham in a deal that cost us £35,000 for him and full-back Stuart Mason in October 1966. He failed to score in 42 first-team appearances in three and a half years at Anfield but had greater success with the Eagles. He spent eight seasons at Selhurst Park, playing over 200 times for them with one of his rare goals coming at Anfield in January 1972, although we still won 4-1. Managerial comings and goings 2012 - Nick Barmby was sacked as Manager of Hull City, after making disparaging comments about the owners and transfer funds. He had led them to thirteen victories in 33 games in charge. 2001 - Mark Wright was appointed Manager of basement side Oxford United. He only won four of the 22 games in which he was in charge, resigning after just six months at the Kassam Stadium, following accusations of racism. 1992 - Phil Neal was sacked as Bolton Wanderers boss, after nearly seven seasons in charge. He led them to the Freight Rover Trophy Final in his first campaign, before the Trotters were relegated to the basement division the next year, but immediately bounced back into the Third Division. He could not lead them any higher, despite twice making the play-offs. He also helped them to claim the Sherpa Van Trophy in 1989. The ‘Anfield Iron’ signed on as a professional on his seventeenth birthday, and went on to win four League titles, two FA Cups, two UEFA Cups, European Cup, UEFA Super Cup and two FA Charity Shields in his time with Liverpool, netting 48 times in 638 games. He died in April 2019. 1991 – Right-back Nathaniel Clyne was born in Stockwell, south London. He signed from Southampton for £12.5m in July 2015, notching twice in 103 reds games before being released in June 2020. 1976 - Fernando Morientes was born in Cilleros in Spain. He struck twelve times in 61 reds appearances following his £6.3m arrival from Real Madrid in January 2005, moving on to Valencia in July 2006 after failing to fully convince in a reds shirt. He had helped us to claim the FA Cup and UEFA Super Cup in his time at Anfield. 1968 - Former second-string defender Alex Watson was born in Liverpool. He signed professional terms in May 1985 but made just nine first-team appearances, including being on the winning side in the FA Charity Shield in 1988, before joining Bournemouth for £150,000 in January 1991. 1870 – Outside-right Tom Wyllie was born in Maybole, South Ayrshire. He bagged fifteen goals in 25 senior games after signing from Everton in 1982, as well as scoring the only goal of the first ever derby meeting with his former club, in the Liverpool Senior Cup Final in 1893. Sami Hyypiä struck a delightful volley from a corner before Luis García’s wonder strike put us two ahead at the break. Scott Carson let in a goal from Fabio Cannavaro to give the Italians hope, although we held firm in the Stadio delle Alpi to reach the Semi-finals for the first time in twenty years. The club honoured the memory of the 39 victims of Heysel with a number of commemorative gestures in the lead-up to the match, including a fans match at the Academy and a Kop mosaic, while a banner carrying the theme ‘In Memoria e Amicizia’ was carried by Phil Neal and Michel Platini, the captains from back in 1985, from the Kop to the away end prior to kick-off. Ronnie Whelan chose the perfect time to score his only goal of the season after Alan Knight had pushed a John Barnes free-kick onto the post to take the tie to a replay, which we went on to win. Ibou off the mark 2022 – French centre-half Ibrahima Konaté nodded in his first goal as we won the first leg of our UEFA Champions League Quarter-final 3-1 at SL Benfica on our way to reaching the Final in Paris. Sadio Mané also struck before future red Darwin Núñez pulled a goal back. However, Luis Díaz struck late on as we secured a club record eighth consecutive away win in all competitions. En route to another final 2001 - We came back from the Camp Nou with a goalless draw in our UEFA Cup Semi-final first leg meeting with Barcelona, to set us on our way to a third UEFA Cup triumph. The Spanish giants had only twice previously failed to score at home that season. Future reds keeper Pepe Reina was in the home goal, while Bolo Zenden made an appearance for the home side from the bench. Gérard Houllier and Phil Thompson were jointly awarded the Manager of the Month prize for March while Steven Gerrard was nominated for the PFA Young Player Of The Year award, which he had won the previous year. A Victory defeat for Ephraim 1919 - Right-back Ephraim Longworth played for the Football League in a Victory match, which a Scottish League team won 3-2 at Ibrox. On the same day, inside-forward Harry Lewis struck for the sixth consecutive game, as we beat Southport Vulcan 4-2 at Anfield in a Lancashire Section Subsidiary Competition fixture, as the Lancashire Senior Cup was then known. Tom Miller and Harold and Walter Wadsworth also scored. For Ibrox 1902 - Winger Jack Cox played for England, with Alex Raisbeck, and future reds keeper Ned Doig and inside-right George Livingstone all turning out for Scots in a British International Championships game at Ibrox Park that ended 1-1. However, 25 people died and 517 were injured when the back of the new West Tribune Stand collapsed due to heavy rainfall the previous night during the second half. Play continued but the match was later declared void by the two FA’s. Farewells 2022 - Sadio Mané bagged his 120th and last goal for the reds as we beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-1 at Anfield. We fell behind to a Pedro Neto goal, but Mané levelled before the break. Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson scored late on to secure victory, but we just missed out on another League title by a single point as Manchester City came from behind to win on this final day of the League campaign. 2011 - We lost in our final game of the season at Aston Villa, with future red Stewart Downing netting the only goal. He made his senior bow at right-back in an FA Cup Third Round defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers last January, playing twice for the first team before moving on to Sporting Clube de Portugal for £5m in June 2019. 1933 – Inside-forward Harold Jones was born in Liverpool.
