The reds start out 1892 - We played our first ever competitive fixture, trouncing Higher Walton 8-0 in a Lancashire League fixture at Anfield, in front of a crowd of just 200. Jock Smith, Joe McQue and James Cameron all netted braces, with Malcolm McVean and John McBride also notching. West Derby-born Joe Pearson was the only non-Scot in this ‘Team of the Macs’, playing his only reds game. 1898 - We stepped out in red for the first time, as we beat The Wednesday 4-0 at Anfield, with centre-half Alex Raisbeck making his debut. We had played in blue and white quartered shirts until then. Left-half Bill Goldie bagged his first reds goal with Hugh Morgan, John Walker and Tommy Robertson also on the scoresheet that day. 1952 - We also played the Owls, beating Sheffield Wednesday 2-0 at Hillsborough thanks to goals from Kevin Baron and Billy Liddell. 2008 – Steve Cooper joined the Academy as an Under-12’s Coach, moving up to becoming Academy Manager in July 2011. He moved on to the FA two years later. Happy birthday Le Ex-Boss 1947 - Gérard Houllier was born in Therouanne in France. He was appointed as joint Manager alongside Roy Evans in July 1998, taking over sole charge four months later. He led us to the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, two League Cups, UEFA Super Cup and FA Charity Shield before leaving by mutual consent in May 2004. He then went on to lead Olympique Lyonnais to two straight League titles. Other birthdays 1937 - Left-half Tommy Leishman was born in Stenhousemuir. He had won the Scottish Cup with St. Mirren, signing for £10,000 in November 1949. He helped us back to the First Division in 1962, although he then only made eleven top-flight appearances before returning north of the border, to Hibernian, in January 1963 after a total of seven goals in 118 reds games, including our first ever League Cup strike. 2002 – Forward Layton Stewart was born in Liverpool. He was with the reds since the age of seven, signing as a professional in February 2020, making his only senior appearance off the bench in our League Cup tie against Derby County in November 2022. He moved on to Preston North End in July 2023. 2003 – Keeper Harvey Davies was also born in Liverpool. He has been with the reds since the age of nine, featuring on the bench in four UEFA Champions League fixtures during 2020/21 and the following campaign. 1985 - Former second choice keeper Scott Carson was born in Whitehaven. He made just nine senior reds appearances following his arrival from Leeds United for £750,000 in January 2005, but only managed to keep two clean sheets. He was sold to West Bromwich Albion for £3.25m in July 2008, after seasons on loan at first Charlton Athletic and then Aston Villa. 1964 - 1980’s Irish reserve midfielder Ken DeMange was born in Dublin. He never made a senior appearance while at Anfield, despite winning full international honours during that time. 1977 - Phil Brazier was born in Liverpool. The defender skippered us to victory in the FA Youth Cup in 1996. Derby stalemate 2022 – We shared a goalless draw with Everton at Goodison Park with both sides hitting the woodwork. Red departures 1958 – Scottish inside-forward Tom Miller died. He netted 56 times in 146 reds games after signing from Hamilton Academical for £400 in February 1912, including an appearance in the 1914 FA Cup Final. However, he is also remembered as being one of the players caught up in the Manchester United match-rigging scandal of 1915, whom he joined in September 1920.His brother John was on the reds books alongside him immediately after the First World War. 1966 - Centre-half John Nicholson died in a car crash, just one day after his thirtieth birthday. He signed with the reds as a professional in January 1957, but only played one senior game before joining Port Vale in August 1961, playing over 200 games for them. 1995 – Right-winger Alex Muir died. He signed from Lochgelly Violet in July 1947, the same club that Billy Liddell was signed from. He only played four senior games before joining South Liverpool in 1949. Bert at the wrong end 1969 – Ex-reds keeper Bert Slater put through his own net as we won a League Cup Second Round tie 2-1 at Watford, with Ian St. John bagging the winner, the club’s 5,000th goal in all competitions. Most recently 2023 – We beat Aston Villa 3-0 at Anfield in what was Jürgen Klopp’s 300th League game in charge. Dominik Szoboszlai opened the scoring early on with his first goal for the club, before Matty Cash deflected a Darwin Núñez strike that had come back off the post into his own net. Mohamed Salah scored in his 150th different game for the reds after the break to complete the scoring. 1988 - Jan Mølby netted the only goal of our home fixture with Manchester United from the spot, with Nigel Spackman also hitting the woodwork. 1947 - We also entertained United, with Albert Stubbins on target in our 2-2 top-flight draw and Jack Balmer converting a penalty. Cyril Sidlow saved a spot-kick taken by United’s Jack Rowley. Stan Pearson bagged one of his eleven strikes past us, with Charlie Mitten netting one of his five. A goalscoring debut 1958 - Inside-forward Alan Banks scored on his reds debut as we thumped Brighton & Hove Albion 5-0 in a home Second Division fixture, with Alan Arnell nabbing a brace and Jimmy Harrower and right-back John Molyneux also netting. Outside-right Fred Morris also made his reds bow that day. 1960 - We also entertained the Seagulls, with Jimmy Harrower on target twice in a 2-0 victory. 1955 - Molyneux made his reds bow as we drew 3-3 at Blackburn Rovers. Alan Arnell struck a brace with Billy Liddell also on target for the reds. Eddie Crossan bagged a brace for the home side, with Bob Langton also on target. 1932 - Centre-half Tom ‘Tiny’ Bradshaw grabbed the first of his four reds goals in our 4-3 defeat at Newcastle United. Gordon Hodgson scored from the spot with Ted Crawford bagging his fourth and final reds goal, our 2,000th in top-flight football, as right-back Willie Steel put through his own net for one of the Geordies’ goals. Tommy Lang scored one of his four goals past us, with Jack Allen scoring the last of his five and Harry McMenemy also on the scoresheet. Razor’s ton 1977 - Ray Kennedy reached a century of League appearances for the reds, scoring the only goal very early on at Birmingham City. Robbo in charge 2018 – Left-back Andy Robertson was appointed captain of Scotland. On the same day, Jordan Henderson signed a new contract with the reds. Gems on their way 2001 - Liverpool agreed a deal to sign Le Havre’s two young gems, Anthony Le Tallec and Florent Sinama-Pongolle, for a combined £6m fee, although they would remain in France for another two years. Sinama-Pongolle bagged nine goals in 66 reds games, while his compatriot netted just once in 32 games, and neither remains with the club. 2019 – Northern Irish right-back Conor Bradley signed from Dungannon Swifts. He struck once in 28 senior reds appearances to the end of the 2023/24 season, already helping us to claim the League Cup. Zico foiled 1983 - Phil Neal had a penalty saved, although we were still able to beat Nottingham Forest at Anfield thanks to an Ian Rush goal. We have faced Forest twice more on this day in history in the top flight. 1963 - Our City Ground encounter ended goalless, as we started this title-winning season with just three points from our opening four fixtures. 1985 - Ronnie Whelan bagged a brace as we won 2-0 at Anfield. Ironed out 1956 - We drew 1-1 at Upton Park in a Second Division meeting, with Billy Liddell on the scoresheet. Forward John Evans made his hundredth reds appearance in this game. Future Manchester United boss Frank O’Farrell struck for the home side. 1966 - Geoff Strong netted as we again held West Ham United to a draw in the East End, with Geoff Hurst on the scoresheet for the Irons, one of his nine goals against us. Tommy Smith reached a century of reds outings in this match. 1962 - Our other trip to face the Hammers on this day in history ended in defeat, with winger Tony Scott nabbing the only goal of the game. 2008 – Future reds First Team Coach Kevin Keen was appointed Caretaker Manager at West Ham for the second time after Alan Curbishley’s resignation. He was in charge for just one game, a 3-2 defeat at West Bromwich Albion before Gianfranco Zola took over. Starting off badly 1910 - We kicked off the season with a defeat, when Jimmy Stewart nabbed our consolation as Bradford City won 2-1 at Anfield. Reserves custodian Augustus Beeby had to step in between the sticks due to Sam Hardy’s damaged wrist. Final strike 1894 – Winger Patrick Gordon netted his eighth and final reds goal in our 3-3 top-flight draw at Burnley. Hugh McQueen and Harry Bradshaw also scored. Bad Bhoy 1895 – We faced Celtic for the first time in our history, winning an Anfield friendly 2-0 thanks to goals from George Allan and Frank Becton. Tommy Morrison from the visitors was sent off in the second half for dissent. Young reds 1999 - Steven Gerrard scored on his debut for England Under-21’s as they beat Luxembourg 5-0 in a European Championships qualifier at the Madejski Stadium in Reading. Jamie Carragher and future red Emile Heskey also started, while David Thompson came on as a substitute. On the same day, Frode Kippe scored in Norway Under-21’s 2-1 qualifying win over Greece, with future red John Arne Riise also in action. 2010 – Danny Wilson played for Scotland Under-21’s in their 1-1 European Championships qualifying draw in Belarus, while future red Daniel Sturridge scored as England won their qualifier at the same level 1-0 in Portugal, with fellow future red Jordan Henderson also featuring and future reds Christian Benteke and Simon Mignolet also in international action. 2011 – Wilson featured for the senior side for the fifth and final time as Scotland drew 2-2 with the Czech Republic in a Euro 2012 qualifier at Hampden Park, with Charlie Adam and ex-red Milan Baroš also in action. 2015 – Joe Gomez and Jordon Ibe both made their debuts for England Under-21’s as they beat USA Under-23’s 1-0 at Deepdale. Meanwhile, Gini Wijnaldum won his first senior cap for the Netherlands as a Newcastle United player in their 1-0 defeat by Iceland in a European Championships qualifier in Amsterdam. Divock Origi played for Belgium that day as they beat Bosnia-Herzegovina 3-1 in another qualifier in Brussels. 2021 – Josh Davidson debuted for England Under-17’s as they beat Romania 2-0 in a friendly in Poland. Recent internationals 2017 – Dejan Lovren featured in Croatia’s 1-0 World Cup qualifying defeat of Kosovo in Zagreb, while Gini Wijnaldum played as the Netherlands beat Bulgaria 3-1 in Amsterdam. Future red Xherdan Shaqiri and ex-red Péter Gulácsi also played in qualifiers that day, while ex-red Bernard Diomède took charge of France Under-19’s. 2014 – Daniel Agger converted a penalty while winning the first cap of his second spell with Brøndby IF, as Denmark lost a friendly 2-1 to Turkey in Odense. Meanwhile, Roy Hodgson’s England beat Norway 1-0 at Wembley, with Jordan Henderson, Rickie Lambert, Raheem Sterling, Daniel Sturridge and future reds James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all featuring. Jordan Rossiter won his only cap for England Under-18’s as they beat the Netherlands 4-1 in Leigh, with future red Dominic Solanke also debuting at this level and Sheyi Ojo also in action. Ex-reds Robbie Keane and Javier Mascherano also featured in friendlies that day. 2010 – Fernando Torres netted his last two goals for Spain as a reds player as they won a Euro 2012 qualifier 4-0 in Liechtenstein. Raul Meireles was on target while playing for Portugal as a red for the first time, in their 4-4 draw with Cyprus. Dirk Kuyt converted a penalty as the Netherlands thumped San Marino 5-0 in Serravalle. Ex-red Sami Hyypiä was sent off while skippering Finland to a 2-0 defeat in Moldova. Craig Bellamy skippered Wales while winning his first cap on loan at Cardiff City from Manchester City in their 1-0 defeat in Montenegro, John Toshack’s last game in charge of his country. James Milner played for England for the first time since moving to Manchester City, with Steven Gerrard, Glen Johnson, Milan Jovanović, Martin Škrtel, future reds Christian Benteke, Ragnar Klavan and Xherdan Shaqiri, and ex-reds Xabi Alonso, Robbie Keane, Jari Litmanen, Carl Medjani, Nikolay Mihaylov and John Arne Riise also featuring in qualifiers that day. First and last caps 2004 - Xabi Alonso won his first cap as a reds player, and thirteenth to date, as Spain were held to a 1-1 draw by Scotland at the Estadio Ciutat de València, although the game was postponed after 59 minutes due to floodlight failure. This was the first ever senior international staged at this ground, with future red Fernando Torres captaining the side for the first time. Meanwhile, Bolo Zenden won his only cap while permanently with Middlesbrough as the Netherlands beat Liechtenstein 3-0 in Utrecht, with future red Dirk Kuyt winning his first cap. Future red Daniel Agger won his first Under-21’s cap as Denmark beat Ukraine 3-2 in Farum in a European Championships qualifier. Also in Under-21’s action that day were Darren Potter and future reds Ramon Calliste, Scott Carson, Stewart Downing, James Milner, Gary O’Neil and Jermaine Pennant. 1975 - David Johnson won his third cap, and final one as an Ipswich Town player, in England’s 2-1 European Championships qualifying win in Switzerland. Ray Clemence and Kevin Keegan both also played. Future red Kenny Dalglish played for Scotland as they lost 1-0 in Denmark on the same day. 1992 - Future reds keeper Brad Friedel made his senior international debut for the USA in their 2-0 friendly defeat of Canada in St. John’s. 2006 - Javier Mascherano played his first international while with West Ham United as Argentina lost a friendly 3-0 to Brazil at the Emirates Stadium. 2011 – Mohamed Salah made his senior international debut in Egypt’s 2-1 defeat in an African Cup of Nations qualifier in Sierra Leone, with fellow future red featuring as Algeria drew another qualifier 1-1 in Tanzania. 2016 - Sadio Mané won his first cap as a red in Senegal’s 2-0 defeat of Namibia in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Dakar, with ex-red Victor Moses playing in Nigeria’s 1-0 win over Tanzania in Uyo on the same day, while Abel Xavier took charge of Mozambique. 2020 – Neco Williams debuted for Wales as they won a UEFA Nations League group game 1-0 in Finland, with Harry Wilson also featuring. Emre Can won his first cap as a Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund player as Germany drew 1-1 with Spain in Stuttgart, with future red Dominik Szoboszlai netting the only goal of Hungary’s trip to Turkey. Future red Thiago Alcântara and ex-red Péter Gulácsi also played in the UEFA Nations League that day. 2021 - Luke Chambers, Kaide Gordon and Lee Jonas all debuted for England Under-18’s in their 1-1 draw with Wales in Newport, with Melkamu Frauendorf featuring for Germany at the same level as they beat Austria 3-1 in the Czech Republic. On the same day, ex-red Bernard Diomède took charge of France Under-20’s as they shared a goalless friendly draw with Norway Under-19’s in Clairefontaine-en-Yvelines. Also in international action 2005 - Momo Sissoko won his first cap as a reds player, netting his second and final goal for his country in Mali’s 2-0 defeat of Congo in a World Cup qualifier in Bamako, with Djimi Traoré also in the side. Fernando Morientes struck his first international goal since moving to Anfield, with Xabi Alonso, Luis García, Pepe Reina and future red Fernando Torres all also featuring in Spain’s 2-1 friendly defeat of Canada in Santander. Meanwhile Yossi Benayoun won his first cap while with West Ham United, playing against future red Philipp Degen’s Switzerland in Basel. Djibril Cissé bagged a brace as France beat the Faroe Islands 3-0 in a qualifier in Lens, with El-Hadji Diouf grabbing his first goal as a Bolton Wanderers player as Senegal won 1-0 in Zambia. Milan Baroš won his first cap as an Aston Villa player as the Czech Republic lost 2-0 in Romania, with ex-red Vladimír Šmicer also featuring. Jamie Carragher made his first start in a competitive England fixture as he won his nineteenth cap, with future red Joe Cole bagging the only goal in Wales, who were managed by John Toshack. Also representing their countries on this day were Steven Gerrard, Sami Hyypiä, ex-red Daniel Sjölund, and future reds Daniel Agger, Jan Kromkamp, Dirk Kuyt, Christian Poulsen, Martin Škrtel and Andriy Voronin. 2006 – Future red Nikolay Mihaylov played for Bulgaria Under-21’s in their 2-1 defeat of Croatia in a European Championships qualifier in Sofia. 2000 – Future red Yossi Benayoun featured in Israel’s 2-0 victory over Liechtenstein in a Wor Cup qualifier in Tel-Aviv. 1995 – Ex-red Jim Magilton appeared for Northern Ireland as they drew a European Championships qualifier 1-1 in Portugal. 1989 – Future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel played for Brazil in their 2-0 defeat of Chile in a World Cup qualifier in Rio de Janeiro. 1985 – Ex-red Avi Cohen and future red Ronnie Rosenthal both represented Israel in their 6-0 World Cup thumping of Taiwan in Tel-Aviv. Alberto in action 2004 – Alberto Aquilani won his first Italy Under-21’s cap as a Roma player in their 2-0 European Championships qualifying defeat of Norway in Trapani, netting his first goal at this level. 2002 – He featured for the Under-19’s as they drew 1-1 with Belgium. 2004 – Future red Raul Meireles netted for Portugal Under-21’s as they won a European Championships qualifier 2-1 in Latvia. On the move 1993 - Reserves forward Lee Jones joined Crewe Alexandra on loan, netting once in eight appearances. 2003 - Ex-reserves midfielder Phil Charnock was released by Bury after just three games for the Shakers. 2011 - Albert Riera joined Galatasaray from Olympiacos for €3m, after six goals in 28 outings as they claimed the League title. 2012 - Raul Meireles left Chelsea for Fenerbahçe Spor Kulübü for €10m, after six goals in 48 outings for the Blues. 2014 – Future Assistant Manager Sean O’Driscoll was appointed Manager of England Under-19’s, a position he left to move to Anfield in July 2015. 2018 – Ex-reds forward Samed Yeşil signed for KFC Uerdingen 05, moving on the following July after just ten minutes of first-team action. Back to England 1995 - Ex-red Mike Marsh signed for Southend United from Galatasaray for £500,000. He played nearly a hundred times for the Shrimpers, before being forced into retirement. Other reds games 1986 – We lost 2-1 at Leicester City. Kenny Dalglish netted a late consolation after future red Gary McAllister and Russell Osman had scored. 1949 – Albert Stubbins struck twice as we won 2-1 at Arsenal, before Doug Lishman bagged the first of his four goals against the reds late on. 1938 – We lost 1-0 at Preston North End. 1927 – Aston Villa held us to a goalless draw at Anfield. 1921 – Billy Matthews and Dick Forshaw netted as we beat Sunderland 2-1 in L4, before Charlie Buchan grabbed one of his 21 goals past us. 1904 – Glossop held us to a 2-2 draw in a Second Division meeting at home, with Arthur Goddard and Joe Hewitt on target.

In comes Spud 1997 - Danny Murphy arrived from Crewe Alexandra for an overall £3m fee. Spud was nearly on his way out early into his Anfield career, but later established himself as a vital squad member. He made 249 first-team appearances, scoring a useful 44 times, before moving to Charlton Athletic for £2.5m in August 2004. He had helped us to claim the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, League Cup and FA Charity Shield in his time at the club. Double capture 2011 – Winger Stewart Downing signed from Aston Villa for £18.5m, while keeper Alexander Doni joined on a free transfer from Roma. Downing netted seven times in 91 outings before moving to West Ham United for £6m in August 2013, as well as scoring in the shoot-out as we claimed the Carling Cup at Wembley in 2012. Doni featured four times before joining Botafogo in his native Brazil in January 2013 having apparently suffered a heart attack during a routine medical in the summer of 2012. Final despair 2018 – Dejan Lovren played in the World Cup Final in Moscow, with France beating Croatia 4-2. 2007 - Javier Mascherano was on the losing side in the Copa América Final, as Argentina were beaten 3-0 by future red Alexander Doni’s Brazil in Venezuela. Meanwhile, Emiliano Insúa featured as Argentina Under-20’s beat Mexico 1-0 in the Quarter-final of the World Championships in Ottawa. Off goes Igor 2005 - Igor Bišcan signed for Panathinaikos after 118 reds games. The big Croat netted three times as he helped us to the Worthington Cup, UEFA Super Cup and Charity Shield in 2001, the Worthington Cup again two years later, as well as playing a key role on the road to Istanbul. He had arrived from Dinamo Zagreb for £5.5m in December 2000. 1969 – Keeper John Ogston moved on to Doncaster Rovers, after a successful loan spell. He signed from his hometown club Aberdeen for £10,000 in September 1965 having played over 200 games for the Dons, but only appeared once for the reds. Other arrivals 1989 – Swedish centre-half Glenn Hysén signed from Fiorentina for £600,000. He went on to make 93 appearances, notching three times and helping us to our most recent title win in 1990, as well as the FA Charity Shield on his debut. He returned to his hometown to sign for GAIS in May 1992. 2014 - Serbian winger Lazar Marković signed from SL Benfica for £19.8m. He struck three times in 34 games before spending much of his time out on loan, moving on to Fulham for free in February 2019. Bellers off the mark 2006 - Paul Anderson and Craig Bellamy both scored in their first reds games as we won a friendly 2-0 at Wrexham. Also making their first senior appearances that day were Godwin Antwi, Danny Guthrie, Adam Hammill, Jack Hobbs, Besian Idrizaj, David Martin, Danny O'Donnell, Gabriel Paletta, Lee Peltier, Miki Roqué, James Smith and Robbie Threlfall. Keeping bows 2022 – Custodians Harvey Davies and Fabian Mrozek both played their first reds games as we beat Crystal Palace 2-0 to secure the Standard Chartered Singapore Trophy 2022, thanks to goals from Jordan Henderson and Mohamed Salah. More reds firsts 2009 - Keeper Péter Gulácsi, right-back Glen Johnson and centre-backs Daniel Ayala and Mikel San José all made their reds bows as we were held to a goalless draw in our friendly with St. Gallen 1879 in their AFG Arena in Switzerland. Beaten again 2020 – Arsenal came from behind to win 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium behind closed doors, as we fell to only our third League defeat of the season. Sadio Mané opened the scoring, but Alexandre Lacazette and Reiss Nelson both capitalised on reds errors to give the Gunners a half-time lead, which they held on to despite a second-half siege by the visitors. Bonne anniversaire 1981 - French midfielder Alou Diarra was born in Villepinte. After his free transfer from Bayern München in July 2002, he spent three seasons on loan in France, first at Le Havre AC, and then at Bastia and Racing Club de Lens, who he signed permanently for in June 2005. His only appearance in a red shirt came in a friendly win in Le Havre, when he enjoyed the rare distinction of returning to the pitch after having been substituted, as a replacement for Vegard Heggem. Suso the champion 2012 – Suso featured as Spain Under-19’s beat Greece 1-0 in the European Championships Final in Estonia. 2016 – Future red Dominic Solanke scored for England Under-19’s as they beat the Netherlands 2-1 in a group stage game in Germany, with Sheyi Ojo and Jordan Rossiter also in action. This was his second and last strike at this level. Stevie signs on again 2013 – Steven Gerrard signed a new contract to tie him to the club until 2015. He struck 186 times in 710 reds games, moving on to LA Galaxy in July 2015, before returning to the reds on the Academy staff. Redders in charge 1999 - It was confirmed that Jamie Redknapp would take over from the departed Paul Ince as reds captain. Robbie Fowler was appointed as his deputy. Unfortunately, much of his time as skipper was blighted by injury. Another birth and death 1920 - Keeper Ray Minshull was born in Bolton. He spent most of his five years at Anfield as deputy to Cyril Sidlow, making just 31 first-team appearances after joining the reds in September 1946. He left for Southport in June 1951, playing more than 200 times for them, and later became Player/Manager at Wigan Athletic. 1953 – Forward Dave Wright died. He bagged 35 goals in exactly a century of reds games after signing from Sunderland in March 1930. He remained at Anfield until July 1934, when he joined Hull City for £1,000. On the move 2003 – Future reds right-back Glen Johnson joined Chelsea from West Ham United for £6m, becoming the first signing of the Roman Abramovich era. He bagged four goals in 71 outings before joining Portsmouth in August 2006, initially on loan. On the same day, ex-reds reserves defender Alex Watson left basement side Exeter City for nearby Southern League side Taunton Town after one goal in 51 outings since signing on free transfer from Torquay United two years earlier. 1997 - Ex-red Ray Houghton signed for Reading from Crystal Palace on a free transfer. He struck just once in 56 appearances in his two seasons with the Royals before moving on to Stevenage Borough. 2016 – Ex-reds right-back Antonio Barragán joined Middlesbrough from Valencia, playing 27 times as they were relegated in his only campaign on Teesside, moving on to Real Betis Balompié in July 2017. 1993 - Ex-reserves striker John Durnin joined Portsmouth from Oxford United for £200,000, four years after moving to the Manor Ground from Anfield. RIP Gordon Hodgson 1951 - Legendary forward Gordon Hodgson died of cancer in Burslem. He had bagged a club record seventeen hat-tricks amongst his 241 goals in 377 games after signing from Transvaal in November 1925. He could not claim a club medal in his time at Anfield, moving on to Aston Villa in January 1936 for £3,000. In comes Darwin 2022 - Darwin Núñez signed from SL Benfica for an initial £64.2m. He was on target as he came off the bench to help us claim the FA Community Shield on his debut, bagging a total of 33 goals in 96 outings across his first two campaigns. A red is born 1869 - Inside-forward Edgar Chadwick was born in Blackburn. He had won the League with Everton in 1891, and joined Burnley aged thirty. As Burnley still held his Football League registration, the reds had to pay the Clarets £35 in May 1902. However, he only managed 45 reds appearances, netting seven times, and later had a successful career as a coach in Germany and the Netherlands, including guiding the Dutch national side to bronze medals in the 1908 and 1912 Olympics. He signed from his hometown club for a club record £110,000 in November 1970 and scored 96 goals in 247 reds appearances, helping us to three League titles, two UEFA Cups, FA Cup and FA Charity Shield before returning to Wales to join Swansea City as Player/Manager in February 1978. 1890 – Half-back Charles Hafekost was born in Sunderland. He signed from Gillingham in 1914, but made just one senior reds appearance before joining Darlington Forge Albion the following year. 1997 – Winger Harry Wilson was born in Wrexham. He became the reds’ and Wales’s youngest ever senior international in October 2013 aged just sixteen years and 207 days. He made his reds bow in January 2017 in our FA Cup Third Round replay win at Plymouth Argyle, but only made one further first-team appearance before being sold to Fulham for a reported £12m in July 2021. Farewell Bugsie 2017 - Reds stalwart Ronnie Moran died. He spent 49 years at Anfield, making 379 senior appearances and bagging seventeen goals. He helped us to win the Second Division in 1963 and the League title the following year, before joining the coaching staff. He took charge of the reds for ten games in between Kenny Dalglish’s departure and Graeme Souness’s appointment and had another spell in temporary charge while Souness recovered from his heart operation. Frazier Campbell scored one of his four goals past us, with Jordon Mutch nabbing a brace. New loanees 1990 - Ronnie Rosenthal signed for the reds on loan from Standard de Liège. He made the move permanent for £1m three months later, going on to net a total of 22 goals in 97 reds games before being sold to Tottenham Hotspur for £250,000 in January 1994. 1995 - Keeper Alec Chamberlain arrived on loan from Sunderland as cover for David James. He was on the bench at the Coca-Cola Cup Final later that season, and five subsequent League games, without getting onto the pitch. Reds promoted 2011 - Damien Comolli was promoted from Director of Football Strategy to Director of Football, while Commercial Director Ian Ayre moved up from Commercial Director to Managing Director. Comolli left the club in April 2012, with Ayre departing in February 2017. A reds leader passes on 1936 - John McKenna died in Walton Hospital. He served as a Director from the formation of the club until July 1921, having two lengthy spells as the club’s Chairman. New defenders 1974 - Phil Neal signed from Northampton Town for £66,000. In comes Ronnie 1979 - Ronnie Whelan arrived from Irish side Home Farm on a free transfer. He was forced to retire due to illness in February 1951, and sadly died just three years later. Amongst the players who joined the club during his tenure were the great Billy Liddell and Bob Paisley. He had led us to a total of 140 victories in 354 matches in charge. 1883 – Forward Jack Parkinson was born in Bootle. He joined the reds in 1910, turning pro in October 1911. He struck 128 times in 219 games, moving on to Bury in August 1914. 1987 – Left-winger Peter Kippax died. He left his hometown club Burnley to join the reds as an amateur in 1948, having helped Great Britain to fourth place in the Olympics football competition that summer. He made one League outing, against Birmingham City in March 1949, having already netted in a Wartime League fixture for the reds against Bolton Wanderers in August 1945, before moving on to Preston North End in 1950. For King Billy 1960 - A testimonial match for Billy Liddell was staged. The reds beat an International XI 4-2 at Anfield. Liddell appeared for both sides, scoring for the Internationals. Dave Hickson netted a brace for the reds, with Jim Harrop and Alan A’Court also on target. Other stars in action for the international side included Jimmy Armfield, Tom Finney, Nat Lofthouse, Stanley Matthews, Don Revie and Bert Trautmann. Goalscoring debuts 1929 - Forward Jimmy Smith netted a brace on his reds bow, to hand us a 2-1 win at Manchester United. Joe Spence struck the last of his five goals against the reds. 1968 - New record signing Alun Evans scored on his debut in our 4-0 win at home to Leicester City, with all four goals coming in the opening twelve minutes, courtesy also of Ron Yeats, a Tommy Smith penalty and Ian Callaghan. 1999 - Young midfielder Layton Maxwell scored on his only senior reds appearance as we beat Hull City 4-2 in the second leg of our Worthington Cup Second Round tie, with Karl-Heinz Riedle netting a brace in his 76th and last appearance, and Danny Murphy also on the scoresheet. Stéphane Henchoz, Frode Kippe and Jon Newby all also made their senior bows, with keeper Lee Bracey sent off in the first half with the score 1-0 to the reds. Hull fought back from two goals to draw level through a John Eyre penalty and Colin Alcide before the reds restored order to proceedings. Jürgen’s European record 2023 - Jürgen Klopp secured his fiftieth European win in charge, a new club record, as we beat LASK 3-1 at the Raiffeisen Arena despite falling behind to a Florian Flecker strike. Darwin Núñez equalised from the spot after the break, with Luis Díaz putting us ahead. Mohamed Salah added a late third. More recent reds firsts 2021 – Joe Gomez skippered the reds for the first time as we won a League Cup Third Round tie 3-0 on our way to claiming the trophy for the ninth time. Right-back Conor Bradley and midfielders Kaide Gordon and Tyler Morton all debuted, with keeper Caoimhín Kelleher saving a spot-kick to maintain our lead before the break. Takumi Minamino struck either side of a Divock Origi header. Bells toll again 2011 – Craig Bellamy struck the first goal in his second spell at Anfield as we won 2-1 at Brighton & Hove Albion in the Third Round of the League Cup, also smashing the crossbar with a 35-yard free-kick. A new record attendance of 21,897 at the American Express Community Stadium was set. Dirk Kuyt added a second goal late on, before Ashley Barnes converted a last-minute spot-kick for the home side. Ex-reds reserve Alan Navarro featured for the Seagulls. Other debutants 1935 - Forward Jack Balmer made his first reds appearance as we lost 1-0 at Leeds United. 1901 - Left-half George Fleming made his reds bow as we drew 1-1 at Sunderland, with Jack Cox on target. George Bowen made his second and final reds appearance in this game. First and last strikes 1895 - Centre-forward George Allan bagged the first of his 56 reds goals as we won 4-2 at Loughborough Town in a Second Division fixture. Davy Hannah bagged a brace with Jimmy Ross also on target. 1974 - Phil Boersma netted his thirtieth and final goal for the reds in our 3-0 top-flight defeat of Stoke City at Anfield. Steve Heighway rounded off the scoring, with the ball having been set rolling by a John Ritchie own goal. 1994 – John Scales netted his first reds goal as we beat Burnley 2-0 in the first leg of our League Cup Second Round tie at Anfield. Robbie Fowler also scored. Macca off the mark 1985 - Kenny Dalglish scored at Goodison inside twenty seconds, to become the only ever Player/Manager to net in this fixture. Ian Rush equalled Harry Chambers’ club record for derby strikes with his eighth against the Blues before Steve McMahon nabbed his first reds goal from 25 yards, as we raced into a three-goal half-time lead. Graeme Sharp struck one of his seven derby goals after the break before Gary Lineker scored one of his six goals against us late on, but we hung on to win 3-2 with Lineker also rattling the crossbar. Phil Neal came on as a substitute, and so equalled Ian Callaghan’s record of 29 consecutive derby appearances, while Steve Nicol reached a century of reds outings. 1946 - Our other derby match on this day ended in a goalless draw at Anfield. Future reds on target 1991 - Gary McAllister scored the only goal of the game as we lost 1-0 at Leeds United. 2013 – Centre-back Dejan Lovren headed in as Southampton won 1-0 at Anfield, with fellow future reds Nathaniel Clyne, Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert also featuring. Kenny at Hampden Kenny Dalglish twice turned out for the Scots at Hampden Park on this day. 1977 - He scored in their 3-1 World Cup qualifying defeat of Czechoslovakia. 1983 - He played alongside captain Graeme Souness, and ex-red Frank McGarvey and John Wark, as Scotland beat Uruguay 2-0 in a friendly. Robbo for Ireland 1983 - Michael Robinson won his first cap as a reds player, netting his final goal for the Republic of Ireland in their 3-0 European Championships qualifying win in Iceland. Clubmate Mark Lawrenson also played. Future red Glenn Hysén played for Sweden as the beat Czechoslovakia 1-0 in another qualifier in Solna the same day. Reserve keepers loaned out 1990 - Mike Hooper joined Leicester City on loan. He played fifteen times for them, before returning to our second string. 1985 - Bob Bolder moved to Sunderland on a temporary basis, going on to join them permanently for £100,000 the following month. English reds beaten at home 1983 - Phil Neal won his fiftieth and final cap in England’s 1-0 European Championships qualifying defeat by Denmark at Wembley, which meant they missed out on the Finals in France. Sammy Lee and future red John Barnes also played, while Ajax’s Jan Mølby came off the bench for the Danes. On the same day, Ian Rush and ex-red Joey Jones both played as Wales held Norway to a goalless draw in their qualifier in Oslo. Young England red debuts 1982 - Future reds John Barnes, Barry Venison and Paul Walsh all made their debuts for England Under-21’s as they won 4-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Denmark, with fellow future red Steve McMahon also playing. On the same day, another England Under-21’s side was winning the first leg of their European Championships Final 3-1 at Bramall Lane. Sammy Lee and future red David Hodgson both played against West Germany. England eventually won 5-4 on aggregate. 2022 – Bobby Clark won his first cap for England Under-18’s in their 1-0 friendly defeat of the Netherlands in Spain. James Balagizi and Harvey Davies both debuted for England Under-20’s as they beat Chile 3-0 in the Costa Cálida Supercup in the same stadium, with Melkamu Frauendorf appearing for Germany Under-19’s for the first time as they thumped Armenia 5-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Gifhorn. Oakley Cannonier debuted for England Under-19’s in their 2-0 qualifying win over Montenegro in Denmark, with Luke Chambers also featuring. Trent Kone-Doherty won his first Under-17’s cap for the Republic of Ireland as a reds player in their 1-1 friendly draw with the Netherlands, with the Irish triumphing in a penalty shoot-out. Ex-reds coach Steve Clarke took charge of Scotland as they beat Ukraine 3-0 in a UEFA Nations League group game at Hampden Park. 2021 – Future red Kone-Doherty netted for the Irish Under-16’s while debuting in their 3-0 friendly win in Malta. Also on the move 1991 - Ex-red John Wark signed for Ipswich Town for the third time, this time on a free transfer from Middlesbrough. He spent another six seasons at Portman Road, helping them back into the top flight in 1992 and taking his total appearances for the Blues to 678. 2012 - Stephen Warnock joined Bolton Wanderers on loan from Aston Villa, playing fifteen times for the Trotters. 2020 - Mikel San José signed for Birmingham City, playing 28 times before terminating his contract by mutual consent the following May. 2021 – Former Academy Manager Steve Cooper was appointed Head Coach of Nottingham Forest. He took them from the bottom of the Championship into the Premier League in his first season, leading them to 42 wins in 108 games in charge before being sacked in December 2023. Frank Leboeuf struck the visitors’ late consolation. This game was the 129th consecutive reds game Robbie had played in, but he sat out the next one, our return meeting with Finnish side Myllykosken Pallo-47 in the European Cup Winners’ Cup. Bennett’s treble 1918 - Thomas Bennett grabbed a hat-trick as we trounced Preston North End 8-0 in a Wartime League game at Anfield. Donald McKinlay nabbed a brace, while Arthur Metcalf, Harry Lewis and Harold Wadsworth all also scored. 1940 - We also met the Lilywhites in a wartime fixture, this time losing 5-0 at Deepdale. Other reds games 1963 – We lost 3-0 at Sheffield United. 1957 – We beat Leyton Orient 3-0 in a Second Division encounter in L4 with Johnny Wheeler, Tony Rowley and Brian Jackson all on the scoresheet. 1914 – Arthur Metcalf and Jimmy Nicholl netted as we lost 4-2 at Blackburn Rovers. Danny Shea struck the last two of his ten goals against the reds, with Eddie Latheron also bagging a brace. 1912 – Manchester City beat the reds 2-1 at Anfield, with Billy Lacey nabbing our goal. Also in international action 1969 – Future red Peter Cormack played for Scotland as they drew a friendly with the Republic of Ireland 1-1 in Dublin. 1988 – Future red István Kozma featured for Hungary in their 3-0 friendly win in Iceland. 1993 – Future red Bjørn Tore Kvarme played for Norway Under-21’s as they beat Poland 3-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Stavanger. 2007 – Future red Danny Wilson represented Scotland Under-17’s as they thrashed Liechtenstein 8-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Livingston. 2011 – Future reds keeper Danny Ward played for Wales Under-19’s in their 3-0 defeat by Belgium in a European Championships qualifier in Slovenia. 2016 – Rafael Camacho featured for Portugal Under-17’s in their 1-0 defeat by Scotland in a European Championships qualifier. 2022 - Bernard Diomède took charge of France Under-18’s as they beat Estonia 3-0 in the Tournoi International de Limoges.
