Glory in Rome again 1984 - We clinched the European Cup for a fourth time, becoming the first English side to complete a treble, having already claimed the title and League Cup that season. Phil Neal put us ahead after a quarter of an hour with a scrappy goal, but Roberto Pruzzo headed an equaliser for Roma before half-time. The game ended 1-1 after extra-time, and so the cup was to be decided with a penalty shoot-out. Steve Nicol missed our first kick, but his failure was matched by two Italians before Bruce Grobbelaar’s wobbly legs helped put off a third kicker, Ciccio Graziani. Alan Kennedy stepped up to take the decisive spot kick, as we won the big cup right in the heart of the lions’ den. Phil Neal, Graeme Souness, in his 359th and final reds appearance, and Ian Rush had been our other successful penalty takers. This remains our only first-class game on this day in history. Happy birthday SteG 1980 - Skipper Steven Gerrard was born in Whiston. He made 710 appearances for the reds in total, notching 186 goals, helping us to claim the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups, two UEFA Super Cups and three League Cups as well as winning the PFA and Football Writers’ Player of the Year awards once apiece. 1915 – Len Carney was born in Liverpool. He joined the reds from Collegiate Old Boys in 1939, only netting once in six senior games after the war. 1989 – Former reserves centre-half Mikel San José was born in Pamplona, Spain. He featured on the bench once, joining Athletic de Bilbao in May 2010 after a loan spell. Kenny the boss 1985 - Kenny Dalglish was appointed Player/Manager, following Joe Fagan’s resignation after the Heysel tragedy the night before. That same day, the Belgian FA announced a ban on all British clubs appearing in the country, a precursor to the wider UEFA ban on all English clubs. 2023 - Jörg Schmadtke was appointed Sporting Director, a role he only held until the following February. Shanks for the reds 1942 - Future boss Bill Shankly guested for the reds in a Wartime League game, the only time he played for us. We beat Everton 4-1 at Anfield, with Cyril Done netting a brace, and Len Carney and John Wharton also on target. Half a century for Rushie 1991 - Ian Rush won his fiftieth cap for Wales in their goalless draw with Poland in Radom, playing alongside future red Dean Saunders. He went on to win a total of 73 caps, scoring 28 times, a Welsh record. 1992 – Saunders, by now a red, played for his country again, as Wales were thumped 4-0 by the Netherlands in a friendly in Utrecht. Ray Houghton and ex-red Steve Staunton played as the Republic of Ireland lost 3-1 to the host nation in the US Cup in Washington DC on the same day. A birthday goal 2006 - Steven Gerrard struck for England on his 26th birthday in their 3-1 friendly defeat of Hungary at Old Trafford. Peter Crouch was also on target with Jamie Carragher, future red Joe Cole and ex-red Michael Owen also featuring, along with Theo Walcott, who became England’s youngest ever international, aged just seventeen years and 75 days. Future reds Javier Mascherano and Kolo Touré also played for their countries that day, while John Barnes took charge of Jamaica. In and out 2017 – Forward Dominic Solanke agreed to sign from Chelsea on 1st July, finally netting his first senior goal in his 27th and last outing as we thumped Brighton & Hove Albion 4-0 at Anfield in May 2018, moving on to Bournemouth for £19m in January 2019. 1968 – Outside-right Dave Wilson was sold back to Preston North End. He joined the reds for £20,000 in February 1967, having played for the Lilywhites in the FA Cup Final in 1964. However, he only made one senior appearance in his fifteen months at Anfield before returning to Deepdale. Five for Albert 1948 - Albert Stubbins grabbed five goals as we thumped an American League Select side 9-2 in a friendly in the Triborough Stadium, New York City. Billy Liddell added a brace, with Willie Fagan and Jack Balmer also on the scoresheet. First and last caps 2021 – Conor Bradley came off the bench to win his first senior cap for Northern Ireland in their 3-0 friendly defeat of Malta in Austria. On the same day, Xherdan Shaqiri won his ninetieth cap as Switzerland beat the USA 2-1 in St. Gallen. 2007 – Future red Charlie Adam made his full international debut as Scotland beat Austria 1-0 in a friendly in Vienna. 1999 - Øyvind Leonhardsen won his final cap as a reds player as Norway beat Georgia 1-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Oslo. Vegard Heggem also played. On the same day, future red Frode Kippe played for Norway Under-21’s as they were held to a goalless draw by their Georgian counterparts. 1997 - Øyvind also represented his country in Oslo, as Norway beat Brazil 4-2 in a friendly, with future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel also in action. 2000 - Don Hutchison scored as he won his final cap as an Evertonian, with Scotland beating the Republic of Ireland 2-1 in a friendly at Lansdowne Road. Ex-red Mark Kennedy struck the Irish goal, with Phil Babb, ex-red Jason McAteer and future reds Steve Finnan and Robbie Keane all also featuring. 2008 – Philipp Degen won his last cap as a Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund player, and thirtieth to date, as Switzerland beat Liechtenstein 3-0 in a friendly in St. Gallen. Roma’s Alberto Aquilani was also in friendly action that day, while Alex Manninger won his last cap as a Robur Siena player in Austria’s 5-1 defeat of Malta in Graz. 2016 – Future red Fabinho won his fourth and last senior cap as an AS Monaco player, as Brazil beat Panama 2-0 in a friendly in the USA. Philippe Coutinho and future red Alisson Becker also featured. 1982 – Future reds Assistant Manager Sean O’Driscoll won his third and last cap for the Republic of Ireland in their 2-1 defeat at Trinidad & Tobago. Champion youngsters 2010 – Conor Coady captained England Under-17’s to victory in the European Championships, as they beat Spain 2-1 in the Final in Liechtenstein. Andre Wisdom put through his own net and then scored at the right end. Other reds on target for their countries 2014 – Daniel Sturridge netted as Roy Hodgson’s England beat Peru 3-0 at Wembley, with Steven Gerrard captaining a side that also included Jordan Henderson, Glen Johnson, Raheem Sterling and future reds Adam Lallana and James Milner. On the same day, Alberto Moreno won his third and last cap as a Sevilla player as Spain beat Bolivia 2-0, with ex-red Fernando Torres converting a penalty and Pepe Reina also featuring. Future red Mohamed Salah netted in Egypt’s 3-2 friendly defeat in Chile, with fellow future red Xherdan Shaqiri also playing for his country that day. 2004 - Vladimír Šmicer scored for the Czech Republic in their 6-0 thumping of a Tirol Amateur XI in Austria, with clubmate Milan Baroš also playing. Meanwhile, future red Raul Meireles played for Portugal Under-21’s as they drew 2-2 with Switzerland in a European Championships Finals group game in Germany. On the same day, future reds Craig Bellamy, Richard Hughes, Ragnar Klavan and Christian Poulsen both featured in senior friendlies. 1981 - Terry McDermott was on target as a substitute in England’s 2-1 World Cup qualifying defeat in Switzerland. Ray Clemence also played, while ex-red Kevin Keegan skippered the side, with ex-red Joey Jones playing for Wales on the same day. 1952 - Billy Liddell netted for Scotland while winning his twentieth cap as they beat Sweden 3-1 in a friendly in Solna. 2001 - Future red Nicolas Anelka scored as France thumped South Korea 5-0 in a Confederations Cup group game in Daegu. On the same day, Djibril Cissé netted for France Under-20’s as they beat Poland 3-1 in the Toulon Tournament, with Grégory Vignal also in the side. 2010 – Ex-reds Anelka and Cissé also played for France as they drew 1-1 with Tunisia in a friendly in Radès. Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard, Glen Johnson, future reds Joe Cole and Kolo Touré, and ex-reds Mark González, Emile Heskey and David James were all also in international action that day. 2012 – Ex-reds Xabi Alonso, from the spot, and Fernando Torres both netted for Spain as they beat South Korea 4-1 in a friendly in Switzerland. Pepe Reina and ex-red Álvaro Arbeloa also featured, while Krisztián Adorján captained Hungary Under-19’s while winning his fourth and last cap at this level in their 3-0 friendly defeat by Germany in Serbia, with ex-red Ádám Hajdú also featuring. Jack Dunn, Dirk Kuyt and future reds coach John Heitinga were also in international action that day. 2019 – Future red Darwin Núñez scored for Uruguay Under-20’s in their 2-0 defeat of New Zealand in a World Championship Finals group game in Poland. 1997 - Future red Emile Heskey netted for England Under-21’s as they drew 1-1 with Poland in a European Championships qualifier in Katowice. 1978 - Future red Alan Kennedy struck in a B international as England drew 1-1 with Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur. Future reds goalkeeping coach Joe Corrigan also played. Billy’s death 1969 – Irish forward Billy Lacey died. He signed from Everton alongside centre-forward Tommy Gracie in a swap deal for £300 and winger Harold Uren in February 1912, going on to play 259 times for the reds, including the FA Cup Final in 1914. He helped us to two League titles in the 1920’s, netting 29 times before crossing the Mersey to join New Brighton in June 1924. Reserve forwards coming and going 2012 – Congolese youngster Henoc Mukendi signed as a professional. He was released two years later having spent much of his time out on loan. 1997 - Lee Jones was sold to Tranmere Rovers for £100,000, the day after his 24th birthday, after five reds appearances. 2015 – Future red Diogo Jota signed a new contract with Paços de Ferreira. He struck fifteen times in 45 games before moving to Club Atlético de Madrid in July 2016. 2016 – Midfielder Stephen Warnock signed for Wigan Athletic, after a successful loan spell. He failed to score in 59 outings in total for the Latics. 2019 - Moroccan forward Nabil El Zhar signed for Al Ahli in Qatar. Larry the champion 1979 - Ex-red Larry Lloyd played in the European Cup Final as Nottingham Forest beat Malmö FF 1-0 in Munich. Mo wins again 2022 - Mohamed Salah was named as the PFA Fans’ Player of the Year for the third time at the end of a season in which he had helped us to lift the FA Cup and League Cup and come within a whisker of also claiming the League title and UEFA Champions League. Also in international action 1957 – Alan A’Court played for England Under-23’s in their 2-0 win in Czechoslovakia. 1964 – Gordon Milne and Peter Thompson featured as England were thumped 5-1 in a Copa de las Naciones game in Rio de Janeiro. 1971 – Steve Heighway played for the Republic of Ireland as they lost 4-1 to Austria in a European Championships qualifier in Dublin in what was Mick Meagan’s last game as boss. 1989 – Gary Gillespie featured for Scotland in their 2-0 Rous Cup defeat of Chile at Hampden Park, with future red Øyvind Leonhardsen featuring for Norway Under-21’s in a 1-0 defeat of Austria in Molde. 1990 – Future red Karl-Heinz Riedle played as West Germany beat Denmark 1-0 in a friendly in Gelsenkirchen. 1996 – Future reds Steve Finnan and Vegard Heggem faces each other as Norway Under-21’s drew 1-1 with their Irish counterparts in Drogheda. 1998 – Future reds Dietmar Hamann and Christian Ziege both played for Germany as they beat Colombia 3-1 in Frankfurt. 2018 – Future red Ozan Kabak featured for Turkey Under-18’s as they beat North Macedonia 2-1. -
Brian’s bow 1969 - University graduate Brian Hall made his reds bow in a goalless top-flight draw at Stoke City as a substitute for Roger Hunt. He went on to net 21 times in 224 reds appearances, was also the club’s Public Relations Manager from 1991 until retiring in 2012. 1960 - We also faced the Potters, with Billy Liddell striking a brace, including a penalty, as we beat them 3-0 in a Second Division fixture at Anfield. Bobby Murdoch netted the other. Debuting between the sticks 2012 – Brazilian custodian Alexander Doni played the first of his four reds games as Aston Villa held us to a 1-1 draw at Anfield. Chris Herd scored for the Villains after ten minutes, with Luis Suárez nabbing a late leveller after we had hit the woodwork four times. On the same day, Jerome Sinclair featured for England Under-16’s who lost a penalty shoot-out to Russia after their friendly ended 2-2. 1967 - Keeper John Ogston played his only reds game in our 3-1 home League win over Newcastle United, with Roger Hunt bagging a brace to add to a goal from Ian Callaghan. This game launched Emlyn Hughes’ nickname of Crazy Horse after he rugby tackled United forward Albert Bennett in only his fifth reds match. Heading towards Basel 2016 – We held Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund to a 1-1 draw in their Signal Iduna Park in the first leg of our UEFA Europa League Quarter-final. Divock Origi handed us a half-time lead, but Mats Hummels headed in soon after the break. Al off the mark 2007 - Our first ever game at Reading ended in a 2-1 win. Full-back Álvaro Arbeloa raced most of the length of the pitch to notch his first reds goal as we reached 200 League points under Rafael Benítez. Dirk Kuyt headed a late winner after Brynjar Gunnarsson had drawn the home side level. Bashing the Hammers 1984 - We trounced West Ham United 6-0 at Anfield. Ian Rush and Graeme Souness both netted twice, with Kenny Dalglish bagging his 150th reds goal and Ronnie Whelan also on target as we went 4-0 up inside half an hour. Most recently 2024 – We drew 2-2 at Manchester United as Luis Díaz bagged the only goal of a dominant first half. After the break, Jarell Quansah passed straight to Bruno Fernandes, who scored past stranded keeper Caoimhin Kelleher from inside the centre circle. Kobbie Mainoo put the home side ahead but Mohamed Salah levelled with a late penalty. Cottaged by Elton’s cousin 1956 - Roy Dwight scored a hat-trick for Fulham in their 3-1 Second Division win over us at Craven Cottage, the first of his four goals past us. Roy’s cousin Reg later went on to great fame and fortune, under the name of Elton John. Billy Liddell netted our consolation, while winger Joe Dickson played his sixth and final reds game and keeper Dave Underwood appeared for the fiftieth and last time. On a roll 1979 - We secured the third of five straight League wins, all without conceding, as we beat Arsenal 3-0 at Anfield. Jimmy Case, Kenny Dalglish and Terry McDermott all struck in the second half to wipe out the bad memories of losing an FA Cup Semi-final replay to Manchester United three days earlier. This was Phil Thompson’s first game as reds skipper. 1951 - We also beat the Gunners in a top-flight meeting, with Albert Stubbins and Jimmy Payne scoring in a 2-1 win at Highbury, with Cliff Holton nabbing the first of his four goals against the reds as Payne reached a century of League outings for the reds in what was our 2,000th official game. Derby disappointment 2018 – We were held to a goalless draw by Everton in a drab Goodison encounter. 1917 - We were beaten 4-0 at Goodison Park in a Wartime League match. International debutants 1900 - Alex Raisbeck won the first of his eight Scotland caps as they thumped England 4-1 at Celtic Park in the British International Championships. 1965 - Tommy Smith made his debut for England Under-23’s in their goalless encounter with Czechoslovakia at Elland Road. 1906 - Billy Dunlop won his only Scottish cap as they won 2-1 in the same fixture at Hampden Park. Clubmate Raisbeck was his skipper that day, while ex-reds inside-right George Livingstone also debuted in this game, winning his only cap as a Manchester City player. Red endings 1947 - Wing-half Tom Bush played his 69th and final reds game, over thirteen years after his debut. We beat Preston North End 3-0 as we closed in on our fifth League title, with Albert Stubbins grabbing two and Jack Balmer also on target. Bush later joined the reds’ coaching staff. Keeper Ray Minshull saved a penalty taken by the visitors’ Bill Shankly. 1955 – Winger Harold Uren died. He joined the reds as an amateur in April 1906, turning out 45 times and notching twice before joining Everton in February 1912 for £300 with forward Billy Lacey and centre-forward Tommy Gracie heading in the opposite direction. A win at Old Trafford 1982 - A goal from Craig Johnston was enough to beat Manchester United. Bruce Grobbelaar saved an early Frank Stapleton penalty, being helped by seeing a picture of him converting a previous spot-kick in the programme before the match! Win, lose and draw against the Blues We have played Birmingham City three times in the top-flight on this day over the years, with varying degrees of success. 1939 - Berry Nieuwenhuys and Jack Balmer scored a brace apiece as we thumped City 4-0 at Anfield. 1923 – We were held to a goalless draw, also at home. 1973 - A Tommy Smith goal was not enough as we went down 2-1 at St. Andrews, with Emlyn Hughes sent off in the final minute, although he later successfully appealed the dismissal. Future Blues forward Bob Latchford netted one of his five goals against us, with Bob Hatton bagging the first of his four past us while left-back Alec Lindsay reached a century of League games for the reds. Mixed fortunes against the Clarets We have faced Burnley three times on this day in history, winning only once and losing twice. 1900 - We lost 1-0 at Anfield, with ex-reds forward Abe Hartley on target. Sam Raybould had a penalty saved for the reds. 1950 - We won another First Division meeting 2-0 at Turf Moor thanks to goals from Jimmy Payne and Billy Liddell. 1919 - Our Wartime League match ended in a 5-3 away defeat, with Rob Matthews netting twice and Harold Wadsworth also on target. Also recently 2013 – West Ham United held us to a goalless League draw at Anfield, with a Daniel Sturridge strike wrongly ruled out for offside. Oussama Assaidi played his twelfth and last reds game. Up against the Terriers 1928 - We won a top-flight match 4-2 at Huddersfield Town, with Jimmy Walsh bagging his 27th and final reds goal. Tommy Reid, Gordon Hodgson and Dick Edmed grabbing our other goals, with Alex Jackson nabbing the first two of his four goals against us. 1962 - We were held to a 1-1 draw in our other meeting on this day in history on our way to the Second Division title. Roger Hunt netted for the reds at Anfield that day. Beating City We have twice defeated Manchester City on this day in history. 1954 - Brian Jackson struck twice as we won a top-flight encounter 2-0 at Maine Road. 1945 - Don Welsh bagged a brace with Billy Liddell also on the scoresheet as we won a Wartime League match at Anfield 3-0 that also counted for the Wartime League Cup. Milestone goals 1958 - Forward Bobby Murdoch bagged his seventh and final reds goal as we beat Stoke City 3-0 at Anfield in a Second Division encounter. He only played five more times before joining Barrow in September 1959. Billy Liddell scored the other goals, one of them from the spot. 1934 – We drew 2-2 at West Bromwich Albion. We fell two goals behind at the break to a Jock Carter strike and then the first of Teddy Sandford’s five goals against the reds. Vic Wright scored his first goal with Gordon Hodgson also netting in the second half. Management moves 2009 – Assistant Secretary Ian Silvester was appointed Club Secretary, following the death of Bryce Morrison the previous month. On the same day, ex-reserves midfielder David Mannix was charged with breaching the FA’s betting rules while playing for Chester City. He was later banned for ten months and fined £4,000. 2017 – Ex-reds boss Brendan Rodgers signed a new four-year contract with Celtic, having already led them to the League Cup and title since taking charge in May 2016. He left for Leicester City in February 2019. Harry on the move 2013 – Left-winger Harry Kewell signed for Al-Gharafa, in the Qatar Stars League. He struck once in three games before returning to Australia to sign for Melbourne Heart. In trouble 2015 - Ex-reds left-back Andrea Dossena was arrested on suspicion of shoplifting from Harrods, although no further action was taken. Also in international action 1894 – Future red Edgar Chadwick featured as England drew 2-2 with Scotland in the British International Championships at Celtic Park. 1976 – Future red Kenny Dalglish played for Scotland in their 1-0 friendly defeat of Switzerland at Hampden Park. 1987 – Future red Stig Inge Bjørnebye played for Norway Under-19’s as they lost a tournament game 5-1 to Hungary in Poland. 2004 – Jordan Holmes played for England Under-16’s as they lost 1-0 to the Ivory Coast in the Montaigu Tournament. 2007 – Future red Nikola Sarić played for Denmark Under-16’s as they beat Castelo Branco Under-18’s in Portugal. -
Crazy Horse trots in 1967 – Emlyn Hughes signed from Blackpool for a club record £65,000, netting 49 times in 665 games. He helped us to claim two European Cups, four League titles, two UEFA Cups, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and two FA Charity Shields before joining Wolverhampton Wanderers for £90,000 in August 1979. His greatest season was probably 1976/77 when he captained the side to within a whisker of a unique treble, as well as being voted the Football Writers’ Player of the Year. Sadly, he died in November 2004, aged just 57. Claiming the trophy yet again 2022 – We won the League Cup for a record ninth time by beating Chelsea 11-10 in a penalty shoot-out once the Final had ended goalless after two hours. All eleven reds players converted their spot-kicks, including goalie Caoimhín Kelleher, with Blues’ keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, who had been brought on from the bench especially for the shoot-out, then sending his penalty over the crossbar. Incomings 2010 – Winger Raheem Sterling signed from Queens Park Rangers for £500,000. He bagged 23 goals in 129 reds games before being sold to Manchester City for an initial £44m in July 2015. 1912 – Forward Billy Lacey and centre-forward Tommy Gracie signed from Everton for £300 with winger Harold Uren heading in the opposite direction as part of the deal. Lacey played 259 times for the reds, including the FA Cup Final in 1914. He helped us to two League titles in the 1920’s, netting 29 times before crossing the Mersey to join New Brighton in June 1924. Gracie only managed to score five times in 34 reds games, returning north of the border to join Heart Of Midlothian for £400 in May 1914. Jonjo’s day 1992 – Ex-reds midfielder Jonjo Shelvey was born in Romford. He signed from Charlton Athletic for £1.7m in May 2010, having become their youngest ever player. He struck seven times in 69 senior appearances, moving on to Swansea City for an initial £5m in July 2013. Cardiff disappointment 2005 - We were beaten by Chelsea in the Final of the Carling Cup in Cardiff, 3-2 after extra time. John Arne Riise struck in the first minute, and we led until a Steven Gerrard own goal rescued the Blues with just eleven minutes left. Didier Drogba bagged one of his eleven goals against us with Mateja Kezman also netting before Antonio Núñez bagged a consolation, his only reds goal. We have faced Chelsea twice more on this day in history, also suffering defeat each time. 1932 - We lost an FA Cup Sixth Round tie 2-0 at Anfield when Hughie Gallacher netted one of his eight goals against the reds, with George Pearson also on target. 1999 - Michael Owen grabbed the consolation in our 2-1 defeat at Stamford Bridge in a Premiership meeting. This was the game in which Robbie Fowler infamously bent over to taunt Graeme Le Saux, while midfielder Jean-Michel Ferri made the first of his two substitute appearances for the reds, coming on to replace Paul Ince early in the second half. Jamie Redknapp played his 200th League game for the club. Happy birthdays 1948 - Left-back Alec Lindsay was born in Bury. He signed from his hometown club for £67,000 in March 1969 and netted eighteen times in 248 reds games, helping us to the League and UEFA Cup in 1973, and FA Cup and FA Charity Shield the following year, before leaving for Stoke City in September 1977. 1912 - Outside-left Alf Hanson was born in Bootle. He signed from Everton in November 1931 and scored 52 goals in 177 reds games before we received a club record £7,500 fee from Chelsea in July 1938, although he returned to guest sixteen times for the reds during the war, bagging another three goals. Forward Bill Kinghorn was born in Strathblane on exactly the same day. The Scotsman signed from Queens Park in April 1938 and netted four times in nineteen reds games, and another three times in eleven wartime matches. 1937 - Hanson struck on his 25th birthday as we were held to a 2-2 draw at Anfield by Brentford, with Jack Balmer also scoring. Bobby Reid bagged one of his five goals past us as Dave McCulloch nabbed one of his seven against the reds. 1907 - Forward Ted Harston was born in Monk Bretton, Barnsley. He joined the reds for £3,000 from Mansfield Town in June 1937, striking on his reds bow as we were thumped 6-1 at Chelsea that August. He bagged a brace in his second game but only played a further three games, returning to amateur football with Shorts in the Kent League in August 1939 after suffering a broken leg that ended his professional career. In charge 1991 - Ronnie Moran remained in temporary charge following Kenny Dalglish’s resignation as Everton knocked us out of the FA Cup in a Fifth Round second replay at Goodison, the last ever to be played in the competition. Ex-red Dave Watson headed the only goal of the game. 1978 - John Toshack was appointed Player/Manager of basement side Swansea City. He remained in charge for more than five years, as the Swans won 104 of their 250 games under his management, rising from the Fourth Division to the top flight in just four years, although they were relegated back to the Second Division in his final full season. Hodgson’s debut 1926 - South African forward Gordon Hodgson made his reds bow as Dick Forshaw struck early on in our 1-1 draw at Manchester City. Ex-Evertonian Tommy Browell netted his seventh and last goal against us. International starts and end 2012 – Future red Mohamed Salah scored his first senior goal while winning his third cap for Egypt, in their 5-0 friendly thumping of Kenya in Qatar. 1991 – Future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel won his first cap as a Parma player as Brazil drew a friendly 1-1 with Paraguay in Campo Grande. 1974 - Future red Joey Jones made his Under-23’s debut as Wales lost 3-0 to Scotland at the Pittodrie Stadium. 2011 – Keeper Tyrell Bedford won his second and final cap for England Under-17’s as they drew 2-2 with Portugal in the Algarve Tournament, with Jack Dunn and Matty Regan both also in action. On the same day, future red Samed Yeşil scored as Germany drew 1-1 with Romania in the same competition, with fellow future red Emre Can also featuring. Avi for Israel Avi Cohen twice represented his country on this day in history. 1985 - He won his 32nd cap as they were held to a goalless draw by the Republic of Ireland in a friendly in Tel-Aviv. Also in international action 1926 – Elisha Scott played for Northern Ireland as they lost 4-0 to Scotland in the British International Championships in Glasgow. 2001 – Dietmar Hamann and Christian Ziege faced future red Nicolas Anelka as France beat Germany 1-0 in a friendly at the Stade de France. Robbie’s last strikes 2007 - Robbie Fowler bagged his last two reds goals, converting two first-half penalties in front of the Kop in our 4-0 thumping of Sheffield United at Anfield to take his reds tally to 183 in total. Javier Mascherano made his debut, while we reached a new club record of nine consecutive clean sheets at Anfield in the League. Sami Hyypiä and Steven Gerrard added goals in the second half, while Peter Crouch suffered a broken nose after being kicked in the face. 1923 - We also entertained the Blades, with Harry Chambers grabbing our goal as we lost an FA Cup Third Round tie 2-1. Dirk Kuyt headed in the only goal of the tie late on Red centurions 1951 - Forward Jack Balmer played his 300th reds game in our 3-2 First Division win at Stoke City as we came back from two goals down. Cyril Done, Bill Jones and Billy Liddell struck our goals in what was our 2,000th first-class fixture. Les Johnston bagged a brace for the Potters. 1976 - We lost at Highbury in what was our hundredth First Division encounter with Arsenal, including sixteen when they were known as Woolwich Arsenal. John Radford struck the only goal of the game in the final minute, the last of his seven goals past us. All Done 1993 - Forward Cyril Done died. He signed from Bootle Boys Brigade in January 1938 and struck 37 times in 110 reds games, helping us to the League title in 1947 and the FA Cup Final three years later. He moved to Tranmere Rovers in May 1952, scoring nearly a century of goals for them and Port Vale. Goal of the season 1979 - Kenny Dalglish and Ray Kennedy netted as we won 2-0 at Derby County. Razor’s strike that came at the end of an eight-man passing movement was later named the BBC’s Goal of the Season. Sir Roger’s fifth treble 1962 - Roger Hunt netted his fifth hat-trick of the season in a 5-1 Second Division win over Middlesbrough at Anfield. Ian St. John bagged the other two. Most recently 2020 – We beat West Ham United 3-2 at Anfield to equal the English top-flight record of eighteen successive wins, with Gini Wijnaldum nodding us in front early on. However, we fell behind to an Issa Diop header and Pablo Fornals strike before we eventually triumphed through Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané to restore our 22-point lead at the top of the table. Reds debutants 1912 - Centre-forward Tommy Gracie scored on his reds debut in a 2-2 draw at Bury, with Jimmy Stewart also on target, while half-back John McConnell made his 53rd and final reds appearance amd winger Harold Uren played for the 45th and last time. 1954 - Full-back Tom McNulty made his reds bow as we drew 1-1 at Sheffield Wednesday, with Eric Anderson on target late on and Dennis Woodhead bagging one of his four goals against the reds. Rare goals 2018 – Emre Can headed in his fourteenth and last reds goal, our hundredth of the season to date, opening the scoring as we beat West Ham United 4-1 at Anfield. Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino scored after the break, with Michail Antonio pulling a goal back, one of his six past us to date, before Sadio Mané added another goal. Salah and Mané both also struck the woodwork while Dejan Lovren reached a century of League games for the reds. 1996 - Stan Collymore bagged a brace, with Michael Thomas netting his only goal of the season to give us a 3-2 League win at Blackburn Rovers. Stan’s first goal came from a tamely struck shot that was heading straight into the arms of Tim Flowers until it unexpectedly struck a divot and bounced into the net! Cue 5,000 travelling Kopites singing ‘England’s number one’ to the rueful keeper. Jason Wilcox struck one of his four goals against the reds, with Tim Sherwood also scoring as Rob Jones played his 200th game for the club. Happy birthdays 1878 - Inside-left Andy McGuigan was born in Newton Stewart, Wigtownshire. He signed from Hibernian in May 1900 and bagged fourteen goals in 37 reds games, including five against Stoke at Anfield in January 1902, as he became the first red ever to score so many in one game. He was part of our first League title-winning side in 1901, before joining Middlesbrough the following year. He later returned to Anfield as a scout and was a club director as we won back-to-back titles in 1922 and 1923. 2001 - Midfielder Luis Longstaff was born in Darlington. He joined the reds from Newcastle United in 2015, making his senior debut in our League Cup defeat at Aston Villa in December 2019, although he was released in June 2022. On the same day, future red Ragnar Klavan played for Estonia Under-17’s. Four for Fagan 1940 - Willie Fagan netted four goals, including a penalty, as we won 8-3 at Port Vale in a Wartime League fixture. He only remained in charge for nine months on this occasion before being sacked, allegedly for criticising his players in public. International endings 1993 - Torben Piechnik won his final Danish cap as a red as they lost a penalty shoot-out 5-4 to Argentina, after their Artemio Franchi Trophy game ended 1-1. He went on to win fifteen caps in total. 1971 - Larry Lloyd netted his only goal for England Under-23’s as they drew 2-2 with Scotland. He was winning his fourth cap, as was Ray Clemence, for whom it was his final game at this level. The game was switched from Aberdeen after a fire at Pittodrie, being staged instead at Hampden Park. 2019 – Future red Federico Chiesa won his third and last cap for Italy Under-19’s as they drew a friendly 1-1 in France. Young debutants 2001 – Future red Salif Diao debuted for Senegal in their goalless World Cup qualifying draw in Morocco, with future reds El-Hadji Diouf and Ragnar Klavan also in international action. 2004 - Michael Foley-Sheridan won his first cap for the Republic of Ireland Under-21’s as they held Portugal to a goalless draw in a tournament in Madeira. 2011 – Jack Dunn debuted for England Under-17’s as they drew 1-1 with Romania in the Algarve Tournament, with clubmate Matty Regan and future reds Emre Can and Samed Yeşil also featuring in the competition. 2009 – Tom Ince played for England Under-17’s as they thumped Israel 4-0 in the Algarve Tournament in Ferreiras. Ian Callaghan scored twice, including the eventual winner, with Roger Hunt and Peter Thompson also on the scoresheet. 1934 – Sunderland held us to a 1-1 draw at home, with Raich Carter putting the visitors ahead with one of his six goals past us. He had previously spent eight years in various Global Partnership roles with the reds. 2006 - Young reds custodian Paul Willis joined Stockport County on loan. He did not make a first-team appearance in his month at Edgeley Park. On the same day, ex-reds reserve goalie Paul Harrison joined Mark Wright’s Chester City from Wolverhampton Wanderers on a free transfer. Meanwhile, young midfielder Lee Peltier signed a new contract with the reds to keep him at Anfield until June 2008. He played just four times for the first eleven, and joined Yeovil Town in January 2008, having initially joined on loan. 1928 – Future reds outside-right Danny McRorie joined Alloa Athletic from Stenhousemuir, scoring five times in nine League outings before moving on to Morton just three months later. Club record signing 2018 – Dutch centre-half Virgil van Dijk signed from Southampton for a club record £75m. He struck 23 times in 270 reds games across his first seven seasons, helping us to keep 108 clean sheets while claiming the Premier League title, UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, two League Cups and FA Community Shield. On the same day, Estonian centre-half Ragnar Klavan headed in his second and last goal for the club to secure a last-minute 2-1 victory at Burnley. Sadio Mané opened the scoring after an hour before Jóhann Berg Guðmundsson equalised late on. 2020 – Japanese forward Takumi Minamino signed from Red Bull Salzburg for £7.25m. He went on to score fourteen goals in 55 outings, helping us to claim the Premier League title before moving on to AS Monaco for an initial €15m in June 2022. 2024 – Minamino played as Japan thrashed Thailand 5-0 in a friendly in Tokyo. RIP Gary 2012 - Gary Ablett died, aged just 46. He signed on at Anfield as a professional in November 1983, going on to make 147 reds appearances, scoring just once – in only his second game. He helped us to two League titles, FA Cup and FA Charity Shield before being sold to Everton by Graeme Souness for £750,000 in January 1992, with whom he won a second FA Cup. He returned to the club in the summer of 2006 to take over as Reserve Team Manager, leading them to the national title in his second season, although he left at the end of the following campaign. 1992 - Ablett played his 147th and final reds game as goals from Ray Houghton and Dean Saunders resulted in a 2-1 League defeat of Sheffield United at Anfield, after Brian Deane had struck one of his eight goals against the reds. 1977 – Right-back Jimmy ‘Parson’ Jackson died. He struck twice in 224 games for the reds after signing from Aberdeen for £1,750 in May 1925, appearing in every outfield position, and was renowned for his on-field arguments with notoriously foul-mouthed keeper Elisha Scott! He became reds skipper in 1928, also writing a regular column for the Liverpool Weekly Post before leaving the reds in 1933 to become ordained as a Presbyterian minister. 1917 – Scottish ex-reds keeper Don Sloan died in First World War action. He signed from Everton for £300 in May 1908, failing to keep a clean sheet in six reds games before becoming Player/Manager of his old club Distillery in Belfast in July 1909. Rushie’s hat-trick 1983 - Ian Rush bagged a treble as we beat Notts County 5-1 at Anfield, with his second being his fiftieth reds strike. Kenny Dalglish netted a brace as Phil Neal missed a penalty. John Fashanu struck the first of his six goals past us. 1994 - Rushie was on target as we won 2-1 at Ipswich Town, completing his record of scoring for us in each of the six New Year’s Day matches in which he played. He arrived from Le Havre in July 2017 as a winger, playing two senior reds games before joining Troyes in July 2021. On the same day, midfielder Elijah Dixon-Bonner was born in Harlow. He debuted in our FA Cup Fourth Round replay against Shrewsbury Town in February 2020, so far making just two senior appearances. Red farewells 2008 - Club Secretary Sheila Walsh died of cancer. Those who paid tribute to her included boss Rafael Benítez, who said, “Sheila worked as a Secretary to seven different managers at Liverpool Football Club during her 26 years with us. I was privileged to work with her during these last four years. During my time as the manager here I found Sheila to be professional, committed, warm, friendly and above all courageous in the face of her suffering.” 2023 – Scottish forward Frank McGarvey died from cancer. Nathaniel Clyne grabbed his first goal for the club to secure Jürgen Klopp’s first win in charge. Most recently 2017 - Mohamed Salah had a penalty saved as the first half of our Anfield encounter with Huddersfield Town ended goalless. However, Daniel Sturridge, Roberto Firmino and Gini Wijnaldum all scored after the break to secure a 3-0 victory. On the same day, forward Rhian Brewster netted while winning his 23rd and last cap for England Under-17’s as they won their World Cup Final 5-2 against Spain in India, with ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper in charge. Xabi the centurion 2006 - We beat Aston Villa 3-1 at Anfield to end their unbeaten record that season. Dirk Kuyt, Peter Crouch and Luis García all scored in the final third of the first half, with Dirk’s father watching him in a red shirt for the first time. Xabi Alonso reached a century of reds appearances in this game, with Gabriel Agbonlahor on target for the visitors. Birthdays on the wing 1985 - Winger Robbie Foy was born in Edinburgh. He never appeared in the reds first team, although he made the bench for our Carling Cup win at Tottenham Hotspur in December 2004. He moved to League One side Sc***horpe United on non-contract terms in August 2006, after loan spells with Chester City and Wrexham. 1921 - Wing-half Stan Palk was born in Liverpool. He only played thirteen reds games after signing from South Liverpool in 1940 and joined Port Vale, who were managed by ex-red Gordon Hodgson, for £10,000 in July 1948, the record fee we had received to date. He was their skipper for four years, playing over 150 League games. Beating Citeh again and again 1995 - We thumped Manchester City 6-0 at Anfield, with Ian Rush and Robbie Fowler both grabbing a brace to add to goals from Jamie Redknapp and Neil Ruddock, while Steve McManaman played his 200th reds game. We have also won two other top-flight meetings at their old Hyde Road ground in the distant past. 1899 - Tom Robertson netted the only goal of the game. 1905 - Joe Hewitt struck in a 1-0 victory. Mixed fortunes against the Owls 1950 - We lost 4-1 at Hillsborough, with Jimmy Payne grabbing our consolation as the wonderfully named Redfern Froggatt bagged a treble for the home side, the first of his six strikes against the reds, with Dennis Woodhead netting the first of his four goals past us. 1967 - Chris Lawler scored the only goal of another First Division encounter, this time at Anfield to defeat Sheffield Wednesday. A knight for the League 1964 - ‘Sir’ Roger Hunt played for the Football League as they beat an Irish League side 4-0 at The Oval in Belfast. Derby despair 1959 - We lost the second leg of the Floodlight Challenge Cup 2-0 at home to Everton but retained the trophy after having won the first leg 3-0. Dave Hickson played his last game for the Blues before crossing the park. Big League Cup wins 1980 - David Johnson bagged a brace with Kenny Dalglish and Graeme Souness also on target as we beat Third Division Portsmouth 4-1 at Anfield in the Fourth Round as we headed towards lifting the trophy for the first time. Pompey’s consolation came through an Alan Kennedy own goal. 1981 - We thumped Exeter City from the same division 6-0 at their St. James Park ground, to reach the Third Round 11-0 on aggregate, en route to retaining the trophy. Ian Rush struck twice, with Kevin Sheedy bagging his first goal and Kenny Dalglish and Phil Neal adding to a Nicky Marker own goal, with Neal featuring for the reds for the 400th time. Harold’s last 1911 – We lost 3-2 at League leaders Middlesbrough with Harold Uren grabbing his second and final goal for the club with Sam Gilligan also on the scoresheet. George Elliott struck one of his eight goals past us, with Jock Stirling and Edmund Eyre also on target. Sami’s Finnish farewell 1995 - Sami Hyypiä scored the winning goal against Jazz in the Finnish Cup Final, in what was his final game for Myllykosken Pallo-47 before his switch to Dutch football. The game was played at the Olympic Stadium in Helsinki. Reds strikers on the move 1988 - Dean Saunders joined Derby County from Oxford United for £1m. He netted 57 times in 131 games for the Rams, including a brace on his debut as he struck in each of his opening four outings, before moving to Anfield in July 1991. 1999 - Peter Beardsley joined Doncaster Rovers as a part-time striking coach. An international debutant 1980 - Future red Michael Robinson made his senior international debut in the Republic of Ireland’s 2-0 World Cup qualifying defeat in France. We won the Anfield replay, but lost at Crystal Palace at the next hurdle. 1984 – We won 2-0 at Nottingham Forest thanks to goals from Ronnie Whelan and Ian Rush. 1972 – Peter Cormack netted as we drew 1-1 at Norwich City. 1961 – Leyton Orient drew 3-3 at Anfield in our Second Division encounter. Roger Hunt bagged a brace, with Tommy Leishman also on target. 1933 – We thumped Blackburn Rovers 4-0 in L4. He had taken charge two seasons before, immediately saving them from relegation. He then led them to eighth in the League the following season, but paid the price for an inconsistent start to the next campaign. International farewells 1981 - Avi Cohen won his last cap as a reds player as he played his 22nd senior game for Israel in their 4-1 World Cup qualifying defeat of Portugal in Tel-Aviv. 2019 – Future red Calvin Ramsay won his third and last cap for Scotland Under-17’s as they lost 2-1 to Croatia in a European Championships qualifier in Stirling. On the same day, Ki-Jana Hoever appeared for the Netherlands in a World Cup Finals group game at the same level in Brazil that they lost 3-0 to Japan. -
Left-back birthdays 1980 - John Arne Riise was born in Molde. He made 348 reds appearances, scoring 31 times, following his £4m arrival from AS Monaco in June 2001, but left for Roma for the same fee in June 2008. He helped us to win the European Cup, FA Cup, League Cup, two UEFA Super Cups and two FA Charity Shields in his time at Anfield. 1979 – Brazilian left-back Fábio Aurélio was born in São Carlos. He arrived on a Bosman free transfer in July 2006, netting four goals in 134 games, helping us to claim the FA Community Shield in his very first senior appearance. He was released for the second time in June 2012. Jocky on the off 1977 - Alan Hansen made his reds debut as we beat Derby County 1-0 at Anfield, with Terry McDermott on the scoresheet. This was Bob Paisley’s hundredth win as reds boss, which came in his 182nd game as Manager. 1949 - We also beat the Rams in a First Division fixture at home when Kevin Baron, Willie Fagan and Jimmy Payne all struck as we won 3-1, with John Morris bagging one of his seven goals against the reds. 1921 - Harry Beadles debuted as we won 1-0 at Chelsea courtesy of forward Billy Matthews’ fourth and last reds strike. 1904 - Sam Raybould bagged a brace as we won 2-0 at Lincoln City, with defender Tom Chorlton making his reds bow and centre-half Alex Raisbeck playing his 200th game for the club. Zico sets a record 1983 - Phil Neal made his 417th consecutive reds appearance in our 1-0 defeat at Manchester United, with Frank Stapleton on target. It was also his 365th consecutive League appearance – both still club records. He had to miss the next month after damaging a thigh in this game. 1998 - We also lost at Old Trafford, going down 2-0 thanks to goals from Dennis Irwin and Paul Scholes. Another record for St. Michael 2003 - Michael Owen scored his 21st goal in European competition, a new club record, to hand us a 1-1 draw at Slovenian side Olimpija Ljubljana in the opening game of our UEFA Cup campaign. Anton Zlogar’s opening goal was the 250th we conceded under the sole charge of Gérard Houllier. Owen has since been comprehensively overtaken by Steven Gerrard. Most recently 2023 – We beat West Ham United 3-1 at Anfield, with Mohamed Salah converting a penalty but Jarrod Bowen nodded in before the break. Darwin Núñez and Diogo Jota scored in the second half to secure victory. 2020 – Diogo Jota, Kostas Tsimikas and Rhys Williams all made their reds bows as we thumped Lincoln City 7-2 in a League Cup Third Round tie behind closed doors at the LNER Stadium. Xherdan Shaqiri netted his eighth and final reds goal with Takumi Minamino and Curtis Jones both bagging a brace. Marko Grujić scored his only goal for the club before Divock Origi scored as he captained the side for the first time, after Virgil can Dijk had left the pitch. 2016 – We trounced Hull City 5-1 at Anfield, with Adam Lallana opening the scoring. Ahmed El Mohamadi was sent off for handball with James Milner converting the resultant penalty. Sadio Mané and Philippe Coutinho both struck before Milner scored again from the spot after Daniel Sturridge was felled. 2011 – We beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 at Anfield. We went two goals ahead when Roger Johnson deflected in a Charlie Adam strike with Luis Suárez also on target, as Steven Fletcher pulled a goal back shortly after the break. 7,500 up 1994 – Ian Rush scored the 7,500th goal in the club’s history as we drew 1-1 at Newcastle United. Rob Lee had opened the scoring shortly after the break, with Philippe Albert dismissed for the home side late on. Ex-reds Peter Beardsley and Barry Venison both featured for the Geordies. Sent off again 2005 - We drew 2-2 at Birmingham City, with Neil Kilkenny being sent off for the home side on his debut, one of fifteen opposition players dismissed against the reds that season. Our goals came from Luis García and a Djibril Cissé penalty, with Stephen Warnock scoring an own goal and Walter Pandiani also on target. Off the mark 1892 – Forward John Miller netted on his reds bow as we thumped Bury 4-0 in a Lancashire League game at Anfield. Jonathan Cameron and Malcolm McVean also struck, while James Kelso played his only reds game. Kelso sadly committed suicide aged just 29, back in his native Scotland. 1958 – Outside-right Fred Morris scored his first reds goal as we drew 2-2 in a Second Division match at Brighton & Hove Albion, with Billy Liddell also on target. Other birthdays 1949 - Former forward, and coach under Graeme Souness, Phil Boersma was born in Kirkby. He signed professional terms in September 1968 and struck thirty times in 120 reds games, although he struggled to get picked in front of Kevin Keegan and John Toshack. He left the club to join Middlesbrough in December 1975 for £72,000. 1912 – Centre-forward Fred Howe was born in Bredbury in Cheshire. He joined on a free transfer from Hyde United in March 1935, netting 36 times in 94 outings before joining Manchester City in June 1938. He bagged three reds trebles, including notching four times in our record 6-0 derby victory at Anfield in September 1935. 1889 - Irish forward Billy Lacey was born in Enniscorthy, Wexford. He signed from Everton alongside centre-forward Tommy Gracie in a swap deal for £300 and winger Harold Uren in February 1912, going on to play 259 times for the reds, including the FA Cup Final in 1914. He helped us to two League titles in the 1920’s, netting 29 times before crossing the Mersey to join New Brighton in June 1924. 1875 - Centre-half Robert Neill was born in Govan, Glasgow. At five feet four inches he is probably our shortest ever central defender, scoring three times in 27 games after signing on loan from Hibernian in April 1895 and then permanently in May 1896. He left to join Rangers in April 1897. Debuting at Manchester City 1910 - Forward Sam Gilligan scored on his reds debut as we beat City 2-1 at their Hyde Road ground, with Jack Parkinson also on target. 1969 - Phil Boersma made his reds bow on his twentieth birthday in our 3-2 defeat at Maine Road, becoming our first ever League Cup substitute, coming on for goalscorer Alun Evans in this Third Round tie, who bagged an equaliser when George Heslop’s panicked clearance struck him on the chest and went in. Bobby Graham netted our other goal, while Neil Young scored the last of his four goals past us. Ian Bowyer and Mike Doyle also struck for the home side. Supersub back at Anfield 1985 - David Fairclough played for the visitors as Oldham Athletic lost a League Cup Second Round first leg tie 3-0 at Anfield, our hundredth match in the competition. Steve McMahon bagged a brace, with Ian Rush also on target. A rare defeat 1974 - Burnley won 1-0 at Anfield, inflicting one of just eleven home League defeats we suffered in the whole of the 1970’s. Full-back Ian Brennan stunned Ray Clemence from thirty yards with his first ever goal for the club. Signing on 1938 – Utility player Bill Jones signed from Hayfield St Matthews. He scored seventeen times in 277 games for us, with his appearances including the 1950 FA Cup Final when he was preferred to Bob Paisley. Bill won two significant medals in the 1940’s - first he was awarded a Military Medal for his part in the crossing of the Rhine in the Second World War, and then he won a League title medal in 1947 on his return to Anfield. He later scouted for the reds while his grandson Rob represented the club in defence on 243 occasions in the 1990’s. 2021 – Newcastle-born midfielder James McConnell signed pro terms with the reds. He had arrived as an Under-16 from Sunderland. He made nine senior appearances in 2023/24. Hooper steps in 1988 - Reserves keeper Mike Hooper replaced Bruce Grobbelaar, who had gone down with meningitis, as we won 3-1 at Southampton thanks to goals from John Aldridge, Peter Beardsley and Jan Mølby. Beating the Blues 1898 - Andrew McCowie bagged a brace, including a penalty, as we won 2-1 at Goodison Park. This was our first ever win across Stanley Park. Harkness on loan 1993 - Steve Harkness joined Second Division Huddersfield Town on loan. He made five appearances for the Terriers before returning to Anfield. 1987 - Reserves midfielder Ken DeMange joined Leeds United. He had never made a senior appearance while on our books, despite winning full international honours during that time. Double debutants 1924 – Future reds Gordon Hodgson and Arthur Riley won their first caps for South Africa as they beat Ireland 2-1 in Belfast. On the same day, future red Javier Mascherano featured as Argentina Under-17’s beat Mali 2-1 after extra time to reach the Semi-finals of the World Championships Finals in Trinidad & Tobago. 2007 – Future reds centre-back Danny Wilson won his fourth and final cap for Scotland Under-17’s as they thumped Belarus 5-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Cumbernauld. 2022 – Lee Jonas and Isaac Mabaya both debuted for England Under-19’s, with Oakley Cannonier bagging his first two goals at this level as they thumped Georgia 6-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Denmark. Diogo Jota scored as Portugal won a UEFA Nations League group game 4-0 in the Czech Republic, while Sadio Mané netted from the spot for Senegal while playing for the first time since joining Bayern München in their 2-0 friendly defeat of Bolivia in France. Steven Caulker captained Sierra Leone to a 4-0 friendly defeat in South Africa, his first game for them as a Fatih Karagümrük player. Also in international action were James Balagizi, Conor Bradley, Luke Chambers, Melkamu Frauendorf, Kostas Tsimikas and ex-red Xherdan Shaqiri, with Steve Clarke taking charge of Scotland.
