Debutants 1956 - Half-back Johnny Wheeler made his reds bow as we lost 2-0 at home to Stoke City in our Second Division fixture, with Johnny King netting one of his five goals past the reds and George Kelly also on target. 1937 - We also entertained the Potters, with Alf Hanson on target twice in a 3-0 victory, including a penalty, and Berry Nieuwenhuys also netting. 1979 - Israeli defender Avi Cohen made his debut in our 1-1 draw at Leeds United, with David Johnson reaching a century of reds games. Terry McDermott struck our goal in what was our 3,000th League game. 1973 - Forward Derek Brownbill played his only reds game. He was only at Anfield for fourteen months but netted twelve goals in 23 games as we won the Second Division title. 2014 - Jordan Henderson was named as the club’s official vice-captain, following the departure of Daniel Agger. 1905 – Left-half Jim Bradley signed from Stoke, helping us to claim the League title in his first season and scoring eight times in 186 reds appearances before joining Reading in June 1911. 1965 - Keeper John Ogston signed from his hometown club Aberdeen for £10,000. He played over 200 games for the Dons but only appeared once for the reds. He joined Doncaster Rovers on loan in August 1968, before moving there permanently in July 1969. European fortunes Our four continental ties on this day in history have ended in three wins and a defeat. 2004 - We beat AS Monaco 2-0 at Anfield in the group stage of the Champions League with strike partners Djibril Cissé and Milan Baroš both on the scoresheet. 1998 - We won our opening UEFA Cup match 3-0 at Slovakian side Košice, thanks to goals from Patrik Berger, Karl-Heinz Riedle and Michael Owen. 1970 - We won 1-0 at home to Hungarians Ferencvárosi in the Fairs Cup, thanks to a Bobby Graham strike. 1971 - We lost 2-1 in the opening game of our European Cup Winners’ Cup campaign at Servette FC Genève, with Chris Lawler nabbing our late consolation and the reds missing a host of chances. However, we won the Anfield return 2-0 to progress. Youngsters starting out 2014 – Future reds keeper Kamil Grabara made his debut for Poland Under-16’s as they thrashed Northern Ireland 5-0 in Dungannon. 2010 – Future red Samed Yeşil won his first cap for Germany Under-17’s in their 2-1 friendly defeat of the Netherlands. Young Nando on target 2001 - Future red Fernando Torres scored for Spain Under-17’s as they beat Oman 2-1 in the World Championship Finals in Trinidad. However, they lost their next two games to crash out at the group stage. Fellow future red Javier Mascherano also played as Argentina drew 2-2 with Burkina Faso as they went on to top the same group. Cloughie starts out 1984 - Nigel Clough joined Nottingham Forest from Heanor Town on a free transfer. He went on to score 130 goals for Forest in 400 appearances, before joining the reds for £2.275m in June 1993. Moving on 2023 – Ex-reds forward Mario Balotelli re-signed for Adana Demirspor, scoring seven times in sixteen appearances in his second spell with the Turkish side. 2022 – Centre-forward Andy Carroll re-signed for Reading after a previous two-month spell. He struck nine times in 32 games in his first full season with the Royals. 2020 – Ex-reds centre-half Daniel Ayala signed for Blackburn Rovers, playing ten times in his first season at Ewood Park. On the same day, midfielder Charlie Adam joined Dundee, netting eleven times in 65 games in his two seasons at Dens Park. 2015 – Left-winger Albert Riera signed for Zavrč in Slovenia. He terminated his contract the following January after one goal in twelve League outings. 2014 - Nicolas Anelka signed for Indian Super League side Mumbai City, netting twice in seven outings. He was awarded with a full-time contract at Melwood in the summer of 2006 having impressed in the previous season’s victorious FA Youth Cup campaign, including notching a goal in the Final. Births and deaths 1993 – Ex-reserves right-winger Toni Silva was born in Guinea-Bissau. He moved to Melwood in 2009 after spending time in the SL Benfica and Chelsea youth set-ups, but left for Barnsley on a free transfer in July 2012. 1978 - Former youth keeper Roy Naylor was born in Liverpool. Thommo off the mark 1973 – Phil Thompson bagged his first reds goal in our 2-0 home defeat of Derby County, with Kevin Keegan adding a late penalty. Ray Clemence was playing his 200th reds game. 1979 – We thumped Tranmere Rovers 4-0 in a League Cup Second Round second leg at Anfield after the first game ended goalless. Phil Thompson struck his thirteenth and final goal for the club in his 300th outing before Kenny Dalglish bagged a brace. David Fairclough was also on target, with all the goals coming in the second half. For Jamie 2010 – Jamie Carragher’s testimonial took place at Anfield in front of more than 35,000, with the reds beating an Everton side 4-1. Luis García opened the scoring with Carra converting a spot-kick for the reds shortly before half time. Joe Cole made the score 3-0 with his first reds strike but Jamie then scored from the spot for Everton! Nathan Eccleston also opened his account for the reds. Babb strikes 1996 - Phil Babb notched his only reds strike, the only goal of the game against his former club Coventry City at Highfield Road, in what was Roy Evans’ hundredth League game in charge. 1976 - We also faced the Sky Blues, winning 3-1 at Anfield thanks to goals from Kevin Keegan, David Johnson and John Toshack. Mick Ferguson had shocked the home side by scoring in the first minute. Happy birthdays 1891 - Forward Fred Pagnam was born in Poulton-le-Fylde, Lancashire. He signed from Blackpool in May 1914, and so could only bag thirty goals in 39 reds games before joining Arsenal in October 1919, with whom he kept up his remarkable strike-rate. 1930 – Right-half Roy Saunders was born in Salford. He signed from Hull City in May 1948 and netted once in 146 reds appearances before joining Swansea Town in March 1959 in part-exchange for forward Des Palmer, who never featured for our first team. He was the father of 1990’s reds striker Dean and died in January 2009. 1980 – Michael Beale was born in Bromley, London. He joined the Academy as an Under-15’s coach in 2003, eventually progressing to be in charge of the Under-21’s. He left for São Paulo in January 2017, returning to the reds later that year for a brief spell before joining Steven Gerrard at Rangers. 1988 - Midfielder Ryan Flynn was born in Falkirk. He was awarded with a full-time contract at Melwood in the summer of 2006 having impressed in the previous season’s victorious FA Youth Cup campaign, including notching a goal in the Final. He made a loan move to his hometown club permanent in September 2009. The Bridge opens 1905 - The reds helped Chelsea to open Stamford Bridge, taking part in the first ever game played there. Unfortunately, we started as we meant to continue at the Bridge, losing 4-0 in a friendly encounter. 1909 - We visited there again, with outside-left John McDonald and inside-right Jimmy Stewart making their reds bows as we lost 2-1 in a season opener, with Joe Hewitt nabbing our consolation. George Hilsdon’s penalty was the last of his five goals against the reds, with Jimmy Windridge also netting. An unhappy millennium 1971 - We lost 2-0 in a League game at Tottenham Hotspur in what was our 3,000th first-class fixture, with Martin Chivers nabbing one of his seven goals past us and Martin Peters scoring one of his fourteen. Off the mark 1912 - John Tosswill scored his only goal for the club on his reds debut as we beat Oldham Athletic 2-0 at Anfield, with Tom Miller also netting. Centre-half Bob Ferguson also made his debut, following his signing from Third Lanark. 1926 – Winger Dick Edmed bagged the first of his 46 reds goals as we lost 2-1 at Derby County, with Jimmy Gill bagging one of his six goals past us and Harry Bedford scoring the first of his nine. Starting off with a stalemate 1897 - We kicked off our season with a 2-2 draw against Stoke, with inside-forward Willie Walker scoring on his reds bow and Frank Becton also on the scoresheet. Forward Dan Cunliffe and right-winger Bobby Marshall also debuted as Billy Maxwell bagged the first of six goals against the reds, with Tom Hill also on target. 1933 - We also left the Victoria Ground with a share of the spoils, with Harold Taylor netting as we drew 1-1 with Stoke City, as they were known by then. International reds 1999 - Several reds turned out for their countries in Euro 2000 qualifiers. Michael Owen struck in England’s 6-0 demolition of Luxembourg, his first senior England goal at Wembley, with Steve McManaman on the scoresheet twice, his first goals for his country, in his first game as a Real Madrid player. Robbie Fowler also played, under the management of ex-red Kevin Keegan. Sami Hyypiä skippered Finland for the first time as they lost 2-1 to Germany in Helsinki, with Christian Ziege winning his first cap as a Middlesbrough player, and fellow future red Markus Babbel also playing. Nicolas Anelka won his first cap as a Real Madrid player in France’s goalless draw in the Ukraine. Ex-red Øyvind Leonhardsen was on target in Norway’s 1-0 defeat of Greece in Oslo, with Vegard Heggem also in the side. Another ex-red, Don Hutchison, netted as Scotland won 2-1 in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Dean Saunders won his seventieth cap, and first while with Bradford City, grabbing his final goal for Wales in their 2-1 win in Belarus. Future reds loanee keeper Paul Jones also featured. Future reds Sporting Director Richard Hughes won his second and last cap for Scotland Under-21’s. as they won a European Championships qualifier 3-2 in Bosnia-Herzegovina, with future reds recruiter Mark Burchill scoring all three Scottish goals. A-L-B-E-R-T, Albert Stubbins is the man for me 1919 - Legendary reds centre-forward Albert Stubbins was born in Wallsend. He signed from Newcasle United for a British record £12,500 fee in September 1946 and struck 83 times in 178 reds matches, helping to power us to the first League championship played after the Second World War. He became a scout for the club in 1954, a post he held for the rest of the decade, He was also the only footballer to appear on the cover of The Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” album. Forwards moving in 2018 – Xherdan Shaqiri signed from Stoke City for £13.75m, notching eight times in 63 outings before moving to Olympique Lyonnais for €6m in August 2021, helping us to claim the Premier League title and FIFA Club World Cup, as well as remaining on the bench as we claimed the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Super Cup. 2012 - Fabio Borini signed from Roma for £10.4m to become new boss Brendan Rodgers’ first capture. He had arrived from Blackburn Rovers for £6m in June 2006 and was only a partial success in his first spell, grabbing nine goals in 42 games, with his finest moment coming in the Camp Nou as he scored a crucial goal in our 2-1 victory to help us progress towards Athens. On the same day, reserves midfielder Danny Guthrie joined Bolton Wanderers on loan. He made 35 senior appearances for the Trotters, netting just once, in his debut in a 2-1 League Cup Third Round victory at Fulham. Birth and death 1984 - Left-winger Mark González was born in Durban in South Africa. The Chilean international signed from Albacete Balompié for £1.5m in October 2005, although he was not granted a work permit until the following July. He struck three times in 36 games, leaving the club in July 2007 to join Real Betis Balompié. 1983 – Forward Jimmy Collins died. He signed from Walsall in January 1936, failing to score in seven reds games before joining Cardiff City the following May, for whom he bagged forty goals in 75 League outings. New skipper 2015 - Jordan Henderson was confirmed as the new club captain, following the departure of the legendary Steven Gerrard. On the same day, centre-half Martin Škrtel signed a new contract. He struck seven times in 69 senior outings, since arriving from Charlton Athletic for £1.7m in May 2010, moving on to Swansea City for an initial £5m fee in July 2013. Reds firsts 2001 - We faced Bayer 04 Leverkusen in a pre-season friendly in Lustenau, Austria, winning 3-2 thanks to a late deflected Jamie Redknapp free-kick, with strike pairing Michael Owen and Emile Heskey also netting. This was new signing John Arne Riise’s first outing for the reds. 2018 – Winger Rafa Camacho scored his only reds goal as we won a friendly 3-2 at Tranmere Rovers. Sheyi Ojo and Adam Lallana both also struck before the break to hand us a three-goal lead, with keeper Loris Karius at fault for one of the goals. Uncle Roy’s first capture 1994 - Michael Stensgaard became Roy Evans’ first signing as reds boss. The unlucky keeper was signed from Danish side Hvidovre, but never made a first team appearance, despite being named on the bench 28 times. After three years at Anfield, he moved on to Southampton for whom he also never played a first team game, before returning to his native Denmark, where he was forced into retirement after injuring himself with an ironing board! Doni saves 2007 – Future reds keeper Alexander Doni saved two spot-kicks in a penalty shoot-out that followed Brazil’s 2-2 draw with Uruguay in their Copa América Semi-final in Venezuela, winning 5-4 on penalties to reach the Final. 2019 - Sadio Mané featured as Senegal beat Benin 1-0 in their Africa Cup of Nations Quarter-final in Cairo. Missing out 2021 – Roberto Firmino featured as Brazil lost the Copa América Final 1-0 to Argentina in Rio de Janeiro. He was winning his last cap as a reds player. On the way out 2015 – Midfielder Jordan Williams joined Swindon Town on loan, with centre-half Lloyd Jones moving to Blackpool on a temporary basis on the same day. Williams turned out ten times, with Jones playing eleven first-team games while away from Anfield. 2013 – Michael Ngoo moved to Yeovil Town on loan, although this spell was ended prematurely after failing to score in seven appearances in his three months at Huish Park. 2009 – Reserves midfielder Ryan Flynn joined Falkirk on a temporary basis. He struck six times in 39 games, including their first ever goal in European competition against Vaduz in July 2009. 1992 - Reserves defender Barry Jones moved to Wrexham on a free transfer. New signings 2008 – Reserves left-winger Vincent Weijl signed from AZ Alkmaar. He struck twice in sixteen outings in his first season, spending the second half of his second campaign on loan at Helmond Sport back in the Netherlands, before moving permanently to Spanish side S.D. Eibar in August 2010. 2020 – Keeper Ben Winterbottom signed as a professional. However, he moved on to Brentford just six months later. 2021 – Young Polish keeper Jakub Ojrzynski signed a new contract with the reds. He has so far made it to the first-team bench once, at Sheffield United in February 2021. Ex-reds on the move 2018 – Fernando Torres signed for Sagan Tosu from Club Atlético de Madrid on a free transfer, only scoring four times in 32 outings before retiring from playing last month. 2009 – Midfielder Darren Potter joined Sheffield Wednesday from Wolverhampton Wanderers, having spent the second half of the previous season on loan with the Owls. He struck nine times in 106 games in all before moving to MK Dons in June 2011. 2008 – Winger Mark Kennedy signed for Cardiff City, having been released by Crystal Palace. He failed to score in 79 outings as they twice narrowly missed out on promotion, before joining Ipswich Town for £75,000 in July 2010, where he is now Under-21’s Manager. 2004 - Rigobert Song joined Galatasaray from Racing Club de Lens for £1m, helping them to two League titles and the Turkish Cup before joining Trabzonspor in 2008. On the same day, Andy Parkinson, who was in our victorious FA Youth Cup squad in 1996, joined Grimsby Town on a free transfer from Sheffield United. He played 95 times for the Mariners, notching thirteen times, before moving on to Notts County in June 2006. 1996 - Ex-loanee keeper Alec Chamberlain joined Watford from Sunderland for £40,000. He is now coaching at Vicarage Road, having made 288 appearances for the Hornets. He notched twice in 35 outings, helping us to claim the Carling Cup before being sold to Stoke City for a reported £4m thirteen months later. 1984 – Midfielder Alberto Aquilani was born in Rome. He signed from Roma for a basic fee of €20m in August 2009, but injury restricted him to just 28 senior appearances, in which he notched only twice, although he did manage to register six assists in the League, only one less than Steven Gerrard. He was sold to Fiorentina in August 2012 after two seasons on loan back in his native land, with Juventus and AC Milan. Champions 2019 – Alisson Becker, Roberto Firmino, future red Arthur Melo and ex-red Philippe Coutinho all featured as Brazil beat Peru 3-1 in the Copa América Final in Rio de Janeiro to become South American champions for the ninth time. Ending up fourth 1990 - Peter Beardsley, Steve McMahon and future red Mark Wright all played as England lost 2-1 to Italy in the World Cup third place play-off in Bari. James Milner converted a penalty before Daniel Sturridge bagged a brace, with Ryan Kent netting his first for the reds and Danny Ings also on target. 1988 – Future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel debuted for Brazil as they beat the host nation 1-0 in a group game in the Australia Bicentenary Gold Cup in Melbourne. 1989 – Taffarel featured in Brazil’s goalless draw with Colombia in a Copa América group game in Salvador. Besian’s treble 2007 - Besian Idrizaj scored a hat-trick, his first reds goals, as we took a three-goal half-time lead in our opening pre-season friendly at Wrexham before eventually winning 3-2. Jordy Brouwer, Stephen Darby, Ryan Flynn, Martin Hansen, Ronald Huth, Krisztián Németh, András Simon and Jay Spearing all played their first reds games that day. In and out 2008 – Sarajevo-born forward Nikola Sarić signed for the reds from Herfølge Boldklub in Denmark. He had recently been named as Under-17’s Player of the Year by the Danish Football Association. He failed to break through to the first team and moved on to HNK Hajduk Split in June 2011. 2015 – Spanish right-back Javier Manquillo had his loan from Club Atlético de Madrid terminated. He had made nineteen senior appearances. Emile on the move again 2006 - Emile Heskey joined Wigan Athletic from Birmingham City for £5.5m. He struck sixteen times in 88 games for the Latics before moving to Aston Villa for £3.5m in January 2009. Ray on the way up 1982 - Ray Houghton signed for Fulham from West Ham United on a free transfer, five years prior to his arrival at Anfield. He netted 21 times in 145 appearances for the Cottagers, before moving on to Oxford United. Also on the move 2000 - Young midfielder Layton Maxwell joined Stockport County on loan. He scored twice in 23 appearances for them before joining Cardiff City on a free transfer a year later. His only reds appearance had come in a Worthington Cup tie against Hull City in September 1999, when he scored in front of the Kop. 2004 - Dominic Matteo joined Blackburn Rovers from Leeds United on a free transfer. Meanwhile, Nick Barmby also moved for free, joining Hull City from Leeds United. Matteo played just 39 times for Rovers before joining Stoke City in January 2007, while Barmby turned out on 197 occasions for his hometown club, netting 32 times, as well as taking over as Manager for five months. 1993 – Future reds first-team coach Kevin Keen joined Wolverhampton Wanderers from West Ham United for £600,000, having bagged thirty goals in 279 outings for the Hammers. 2008 – Ex-reserves forward Steven Gillespie joined Colchester United from Cheltenham Town for £400,000. Larry in charge 1983 - Ex-reds centre-half Larry Lloyd was appointed Manager of Notts County. He was only in charge for fifteen months before he was sacked. They were relegated after three years in the top flight in his only full season in charge. Signing on 2005 - Dietmar Hamann signed a new contract for up to two years, depending on the number of appearances he made in the coming season. He moved on in July 2006 after 283 first-team appearances, in which he acted as a sturdy bulwark in front of the defence, scoring just eleven times. He helped us to claim the European Cup, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups, two UEFA Super Cups, two League Cups and the FA Charity Shield. 2011 – Reserves centre-half Andre Wisdom signed a new contract until 2014, subsequently extended further. He scored once in 22 senior games after making his debut in September 2012, moving on to Derby County for an initial £2m in July 2017. 2021 – Forward Oakley Cannonier signed as a professional, having joined from his hometown club Leeds United as an Under-12. He struck 41 times in all competitions in the 2021/22 season, signing a new contract in August 2022. 2022 – Defender Joe Gomez signed a new contract, having failed to score in 142 senior games to that point. Wembley derby joy 2012 - We came from behind to beat Everton 2-1 at Wembley in our FA Cup Semi-final with keeper Brad Jones becoming the first reds player to make his first four appearances for the club in four different competitions. Nikica Jelavić pounced on hesitation in the centre of our defence to give the Blues a half-time lead. However, Luis Suárez then capitalised on a short back-pass by Sylvain Distin, with Andy Carroll heading in a late winner to send us through to our fourteenth Final. European semi-finals We have played three European Semi-finals on this day over the years. 1976 - Phil Thompson netted in our 1-1 draw with Barcelona at Anfield in the second leg, with Carlos Rexach equalising two minutes later. However, this was enough to take us to our second UEFA Cup Final, after John Toshack’s winner in the Camp Nou. This game set our record home European attendance of 55,104 while Brian Hall was playing his 224th and final reds game. 1966 - Bobby Lennox gave Celtic a first leg lead in the European Cup Winners’ Cup, which we overcame in the Anfield return to reach our first European Final. Forward Phil Chisnall was playing his ninth and last reds game. 1971 - Billy Bremner struck as Leeds United won 1-0 at Anfield in the Fairs Cup, with the last of his five goals against the reds. A goalless draw in the return at Elland Road saw the Yorkshiremen through, where they beat Juventus in the two-legged final. Heading towards Basel 2016 – We staged a dramatic come-back at a raucous Anfield to beat Jürgen Klopp’s former charges Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund 4-3 on the night to reach the UEFA Europa League Semi-final 5-4 on aggregate. We fell two goals behind inside the opening ten minutes, while we still needed to score twice in the final twelve minutes after Divock Origi scored in his third consecutive reds game with Philippe Coutinho also on target as we trailed 3-2 on the night. Mamadou Sakho nodded in before his centre-back partner Dejan Lovren headed in an injury-time winner. Red centurions 2019 – Gini Wijnaldum played his hundredth League game for the reds as we beat Chelsea 2-0 at Anfield. Sadio Mané headed us in front after the break before Mohamed Salah scored a stunning strike in what was Jürgen Klopp's 200th game in charge. 1973 – Full-back Chris Lawler played his 500th reds game as we beat West Bromwich Albion 1-0 at Anfield, with Kevin Keegan on target from the spot. 1959 – We lost a Second Division encounter 1-0 at Sheffield Wednesday as Redfern Froggatt struck the last of his six goals past us, with inside-forward Jimmy Melia reaching a century of League games for the reds. Four apiece 2009 – We eventually drew 4-4 at Chelsea in the second leg of our Champions League Quarter-final to crash out 7-5 on aggregate. This was our 300th European game, and tenth meeting with Chelsea in continental competition, a new club record. We took a 2-0 half-time lead thanks to an innovative free-kick from Fábio Aurélio, his final reds strike, and a Xabi Alonso spot-kick. Didier Drogba embarrassed Pepe Reina at his near post to pull one back after the break, one of his eleven goals against the reds, with a thumping Alex free-kick drawing the scores level on the night, before Frank Lampard netted. A deflected strike from Lucas and Dirk Kuyt header left us needing just one more goal to progress. Unfortunately, another of Lampard’s eight goals past us then ended the scoring. Also recently 2024 – Eberechi Eze bagged the only goal of Crystal Palace’s visit to L4, our first home League defeat since October 2022. 2018 – We beat Bournemouth 3-0 at Anfield. Sadio Mané opened the scoring, with Mohamed Salah nodding in his thirtieth League goal of the season, and fortieth in all competitions, before Roberto Firmino completed the scoring. 2007 - We were held to a goalless draw at the City Of Manchester Stadium by Manchester City. City’s Joey Barton pointedly ran to the away fans’ section and placed flowers in front of a giant ‘Justice for the 96’ banner before the game, which was played just a day before the anniversary of the disaster. 1995 - We lost 2-1 at Maine Road in another Premiership meeting, with future City player Steve McManaman netting our consolation. Dominic Matteo had the rare distinction of coming on as a substitute, before being replaced himself just nine minutes later. We have also faced City twice more on this day. 1952 – We lost our other top-flight meeting 2-1, with John Smith grabbing our goal. 1945 - We won a Wartime League match 3-1 at Maine Road that also counted for the Wartime League Cup, with Don Welsh striking twice and Phil Taylor also on the scoresheet. Tom’s milestone 1928 - Left-half Tom Bromilow played his 300th League game in a goalless top-flight draw with Newcastle United at Anfield. He went on to play 341 League games and 375 games in total for us. Bowing out 1923 - Ephraim Longworth won his fifth and final cap as England drew 2-2 with Scotland at Hampden Park in the British International Championships. Clubmate Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers also played, while Maurice Parry represented Wales on the same day in their 3-0 defeat in Wrexham by Ireland. 1902 – Winger Tommy Robertson played his 35th and last game for the reds as we lost 2-0 to Derby County at Anfield. 2021 – Real Madrid held us to a goalless draw behind closed doors at Anfield as we crashed out of the UEFA Champions League 3-1 on aggregate at the Quarter-final stage, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain reaching a century of reds outings. Biting the hand that fed 1984 - Ex-reds reserves striker Colin Russell netted one of Stoke City’s goals in their surprise 2-0 win at the Victoria Ground, with Ian Painter also on target. Graeme Souness was booked, taking him to a suspension for gathering twenty disciplinary points. International goalscorers 1951 - Billy Liddell struck as Scotland lost 3-2 to England at Wembley in the British International Championships. 2022 – Future red Trent Kone-Doherty bagged a brace, including one from the spot, as the Republic of Ireland beat North Macedonia 3-2 in a friendly, while winning his seventh and last Under-16’s cap. Tom the skipper 1934 - Future reds defender Tom Cooper captained England for the first time as they beat Scotland 3-0 in the British International Championships at Wembley. 1945 - Another red skippered his country, when Matt Busby represented Scotland as they were thumped 6-1 by England in a Wartime International at Hampden Park. Clubmate Jim Harley also played for the Scots. Red arrivals 1909 – Half-back John McConnell signed from Airdrieonians for £80. He netted just once in 53 first-team appearances leading up to the First World War, including one in goal in only his second game! 1897 – Welsh forward Billy Matthews was born in Plas Bennion. He netted eight times in thirteen Wartime games, signing from Colwyn Bay in 1918. He scored four times in nine outings before joining Bristol City in March 1922. Mixed fortunes against the Mancs We twice entertained Manchester United in the League on this day in the space of three years. 1979 - We won 2-0 with Kenny Dalglish heading a goal and Phil Neal also on the scoresheet in what the Echo described as “a majestic exhibition of quality football to outplay their FA Cup conquerors” of ten days earlier. 1981 – We lost 1-0, thanks to a goal from Gordon McQueen. Hunt missing 1964 - Roger Hunt missed our trip to Burnley after playing in all of our previous 120 games. Alf Arrowsmith bagged a brace with Ian St. John also scoring in our 3-0 victory. We have also hosted the Clarets twice in the top-flight on this day in history. 1951 - Bill Jones netted the only goal of the game. 1922 - Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers was on target in a 1-1 draw, with Tom Bromilow missing a penalty. This was Barton’s 29th and final reds goal while Charlie Like bagged the first of his four goals past us and Wilf Bott netting one of his five against us. Nominated again 2009 - Steven Gerrard was nominated for the PFA Player of the Year for the sixth consecutive season. The award was later claimed by the veteran Ryan Giggs. Youngsters on their way 2006 - We won the FA Youth Cup Final first leg 3-0 at Anfield, with Robbie Threlfall, Ryan Flynn and Miki Roqué grabbing the goals. We lost the return 2-0 to hang on for an aggregate victory to claim the trophy for only the second time. Other reds games 1990 – We were held to a 2-2 draw at Anfield by Nottingham Forest. Ronnie Rosenthal and Steve McMahon both scored before Steve Hodge netted one of his six goals against us, with Nigel Jemson also on the scoresheet. 1906 - Joe Hewitt and Arthur Goddard struck as we won 2-0 at Wolverhampton Wanderers. 1900 – We won 3-1 at Preston North End with Charlie Satterthwaite, Sam Raybould and Jack Cox all scoring. Happy birthday Peter 1942 – Winger Peter Thompson was born in Carlisle. He netted 54 times in 416 reds games, helping us to win two League titles, our first FA Cup and the FA Charity Shield, having signed in August 1963 for £37,000 from Preston North End. He moved on to Bolton Wanderers for £18,000 in January 1974. He made his debut for England Under-23’s on his 21st birthday, as they beat West Germany 4-1 in a friendly at Anfield. Future red David Wilson also featured. In comes Don 1990 - Don Hutchison signed from Hartlepool United for £175,000. He went on to play sixty times in four years at Anfield, bagging ten goals in the process. He was sold to West Ham United for £1.5m in August 1994. Arsenal again 1996 - We met Arsenal for the eighth time in the League Cup, our most frequent opponents in this competition, and have now been drawn against them ten times. We won this Fourth Round tie 4-2 at Anfield, with goals from Steve McManaman, Patrik Berger and a Robbie Fowler brace that included a penalty. Ian Wright grabbed both Gunners’ goals from the spot, two of his seven goals against the reds, while they also had Steve Bould dismissed with the score at 3-1. 1957 - That was our seventh straight win in games played on this day, a record that stretched back to a 2-0 Second Division defeat of Rotherham United at Anfield when Johnny Wheeler and Billy Liddell were on the scoresheet. This game had originally been postponed back in September. 1982 - These wins included a 3-0 defeat of Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield when Phil Neal converted a penalty before Kenny Dalglish grabbed a brace. A double debutant 1897 - Joe Lumsden scored his only two reds goals on his debut as we won 3-2 at Nottingham Forest’s Town Ground. Andrew McCowie also struck his first reds goal. 1909 - We were also in Nottingham when Jim Harrop grabbed our consolation in a 3-1 top-flight defeat by Notts County at Trent Bridge. Freddie Jones nabbed a brace, with Jimmy Cantrell also on the scoresheet. Most recently 2021 – We thumped Southampton 4-0 at Anfield, with Diogo Jota bagging a brace and Thiago Alcântara netting his third and final reds goal before the break. Virgil van Dijk completed the scoring in the second half. 2019 – Centre-half Dejan Lovren netted his eighth and last reds goal as we were held to a 1-1 draw by SSC Napoli in a UEFA Champions League group game at Anfield. Dries Mertens put the visitors in front, but Lovren headed in our equaliser. 2011 - Vincent Kompany headed Manchester City in front at Anfield from a corner before we equalised when a Charlie Adam strike deflected off Joleon Lescott for an own goal. Substitute Mario Balotelli was sent off late on for the visitors after two quick-fire bookings as the game ended 1-1. On the same day, future red Mohamed Salah featured for Egypt Under-23’s as they beat Gabon 1-0 in the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. A treble against the Blues 1915 - Fred Pagnam scored a hat-trick as we beat Everton 4-1 in a Wartime League game at Anfield, with Dave Watson also on the scoresheet. Bob’s century 1976 – We beat Bristol City 2-1 at Anfield in Bob Paisley’s hundredth League game in charge, thanks to goals from Kevin Keegan and Joey Jones. European wins 1991 - We won 2-0 at Swarovski Tirol in a UEFA Cup Third Round tie, thanks to a Dean Saunders brace, with Mark Wright in commanding form after a 21-game absence. Saunders added a treble in the return at Anfield, as we progressed 6-0 on aggregate. However, we were knocked out by Genoa in the next round. 2003 - We beat Steaua Bucureşti at Anfield, our fiftieth win in the UEFA Cup/Fairs Cup, with Harry Kewell netting the only goal as we reached the Third Round 2-1 on aggregate. Mixed fortunes against the Irons 1999 - We lost 1-0 at Upton Park thanks to a Trevor Sinclair goal. 1971 - We beat West Ham United at Anfield when Emlyn Hughes struck the only goal of the game. Forward Bobby Graham made his hundredth League appearance in this match. Loan moves 2006 - Emiliano Insúa agreed to sign on loan from Boca Juniors in January 2007. He notched once in 62 senior appearances, after his transfer was made permanent for £1.675m seven months later. He moved to Sporting Clube de Portugal in August 2011. 2008 – Ex-reserves midfielder Ryan Flynn joined Wrexham on loan. He struck four times in 27 outings, returning to Falkirk in September 2009 having failed to make the reds’ first team. Waddle’s bow 1973 - Forward Alan Waddle made his reds debut as we were held to a goalless draw at Hull City in our League Cup Fourth Round encounter. Ted’s farewell 1937 – Forward Ted Harston played his fifth and final reds game as we won 1-0 at Blackpool thanks to an Alf Hanson goal. At the World Cup 2022 – Future red Wataru Endō and ex-red Takumi Minamino both played as Japan lost 1-0 to Costa Rica in a World Cup group game in Qatar. Meanwhile, ex-red Dejan Lovren appeared as Croatia beat Canada 4-1. New arrivals 2012 - Rodolfo Borrell was announced as Head of Academy Coaching, with Alex Inglethorpe being named as his replacement as Reserve Team Head Coach. Other reds games 1965 – Roger Hunt and Gordon Milne netted as we beat Burnley 2-1 at Anfield. 1954 – We drew a Second Division encounter 2-2 at Leeds United as Billy Liddell bagged a brace. 1948 – We lost 3-0 at Stoke City. King Kenny’s big day 1974 - Kenny Dalglish married Marina on her birthday at Glasgow’s Netherlee Church. They remain happily married. Reds born 1946 - Brian Hall was born in Glasgow. He signed for the reds in July 1968 fresh from graduating university, and scored 21 goals in 224 games, helping us to claim a League title, UEFA Cup, FA Cup and FA Charity Shield. His most memorable moment came when he bagged his first reds goal, the FA Cup Semi-final winner against Everton at Old Trafford in March 1971, also scoring at the same stage against Leicester City three years later. He moved on to Plymouth Argyle in July 1976, later finishing his playing career with Burnley, but he returned to Anfield in 1991 to take up the post of Public Relations Manager, a position he held until retiring in 2012. He died in July 2015. 2002 – Keeper Oscar Kelly was born in Liverpool. He joined the Academy at Under-9’s level, turning pro in September 2021. 1960 - Midfielder Kevin MacDonald was born in Inverness. He played 64 reds games, scoring five times, following his £400,000 capture from Leicester City in November 1984. He helped us to the League and FA Cup double in 1986, with skipper Alan Hansen calling him “far and away our most influential player.” He moved to Coventry City in June 1989 after a number of loan spells away from Anfield while recovering from a broken leg. 1944 - Forward Bobby Graham was born in Motherwell. He netted 42 times in 136 reds games after signing professional terms in November 1961, but often found himself behind first Ian St. John and then Kevin Keegan in the Anfield pecking order. He left for Coventry City in March 1972 for a £70,000 fee. 1884 – Inside-left Bill McPherson was born in Beith, Ayrshire. He signed from St. Mirren in 1906, bagging seventeen goals in 55 outings including one on his debut against Woolwich Arsenal, before returning north of the border to join Rangers in May 1908. 1887 - Forward Wilf Bartrop was born in Worksop. He arrived from Barnsley for £900 in May 1914, playing three games before joining the Royal Field Artillery in 1915. He was killed in wartime action in November 1918. 1936 - John Price was born in Aberystwyth. He signed from Fordhouse youth club in October 1954, but played just one senior game, at left-back at Leeds United in November 1955, before moving to Aston Villa in March 1957. Stevie sets another record 2006 - Steven Gerrard struck his fourteenth goal in the European Cup as we beat PSV Eindhoven 2-0 at Anfield. In the process, he joined Ian Rush as our top goalscorer in Europe’s premier club competition. Peter Crouch grabbed a late second as we comfortably secured top spot in the group, although this came at the expense of injuries to Xabi Alonso, Mark González and Jermaine Pennant. John Arne Riise reached a half-century of reds appearances in the UEFA Champions League. Beginning and end 1952 - Ronnie Moran made his reds bow in a 3-2 defeat at Derby County. Jack Smith scored his fourteenth and last goal for the reds, with Billy Liddell adding a penalty. Hugh McLaren bagged a brace for the Rams, with Jimmy Dunn netting one of his four goals against the reds. 1902 - We lost there in another top-flight encounter, when Edgar Chadwick netted in a 2-1 defeat with Sam Raybould having a second-half penalty saved. 1913 – Newcastle United held us to a goalless draw at Anfield as outside-right Fred Staniforth played his third and final reds game. New records 1980 - We set a new record of sixty consecutive home League games without defeat, surpassing Millwall’s record of 59 games. A Kenny Dalglish brace handed us a 2-0 win over Aston Villa, with our run coming to an end after 63 games. 2020 – That record was broken as we reached 64 home League games without defeat by beating Leicester City 3-0 behind closed doors, with this run eventually reaching 68 fixtures. Gini Wijnaldum played his 200th reds game, with Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino both nodded in after Jonny Evans had headed into his own net. Shanks on the Kop 1975 - Ex-reds boss Bill Shankly stood on the Kop as we were held to a 1-1 draw by Coventry City. John Toshack grabbed our goal. 1981 – A memorial service was held for our former boss at Liverpool Anglican Cathedral, just under two months after his death. Mighty Mouse against the reds 1977 - Kevin Keegan played for Hamburger SV against Liverpool for the first time, in the first leg of the UEFA Super Cup, as we held the Germans to a 1-1 draw at the Volksparkstadion. David Fairclough bagged our goal, and our thumping 6-0 win in the second leg saw us claim this trophy for the first of three times to date. Held by boys 2012 – We were held to a 2-2 draw by Swiss side BSC Young Boys in our UEFA Europa League group game at Anfield, with the visitors twice coming from behind. Jonjo Shelvey headed us in front, with our other goal coming from a rare Joe Cole strike. Joy against Leeds We have faced Leeds United three times on this day in history, without tasting defeat. 1969 - Ron Yeats struck as we held the Yorkshire side to a top-flight draw at Elland Road, with Johnny Giles having a penalty saved by Tommy Lawrence, although he was also on target with one of his five goals against the reds. 1972 - Kevin Keegan nabbed the only goal of our League Cup Fourth Round replay at the same venue in the final minute. Amazingly, Johnny Giles again missed a penalty! 1924 - Dick Forshaw bagged the only goal of the game at Anfield, our first ever meeting with Leeds. Reds bosses 1978 - 1950’s wing-half Bobby Campbell was named Manager of Bristol Rovers. He led them to just eleven wins in 46 games in charge as they struggled in the old Second Division. 1994 - 1980’s midfielder Kevin MacDonald was appointed Caretaker Manager of Leicester City after Brian Little’s controversial departure for Aston Villa. He was only in charge for four games, before Mark McGhee took over. Disappointments 1983 - Kenny Dalglish was on target shortly after half time as we were held to a 1-1 draw by Second Division Fulham in a League Cup Third Round replay, with the game going into extra time after Kevin Lock’s late equaliser from the spot, but no further goals were scored meaning that we had to play our first ever second replay in this competition. Sammy Lee played his 200th game for the club. 1997 - Ashley Ward bagged the only goal of the game as newly-promoted Barnsley won at Anfield to secure their first ever victory over us in L4. 2008 – We were held to a goalless draw by Fulham, with sections of the Anfield crowd expressing their dissatisfaction with Lucas Leiva’s performance. On the same day, future red Glen Johnson netted a left-footed thirty-yard screamer in Portsmouth’s 2-2 draw with Hull City at Fratton Park that was later named as the BBC’s Goal of the Season. International farewells 1953 - Future red Doug Rudham won his only senior cap for South Africa as they lost a friendly 3-1 to Portugal in Lisbon. 2008 – Future reds keeper Loris Karius played for Germany Under-16’s for the third and last time as they beat Tunisia 1-0 in a friendly. Thommo the skipper 1979 - Phil Thompson captained England for the first time as they beat Bulgaria 2-0 in a European Championships qualifier at Wembley. Ray’s Clemence and Kennedy both also played. Signing on 1930 – Outside-right Danny McRorie signed from Morton for £1,500. He bagged six goals in 35 reds games, moving on to Rochdale in October 1933. International goalscorers 1997 - Future red Harry Kewell netted his first goal for Australia as they drew the first leg of their World Cup Play-off 1-1 in Iran. 1930 - Gordon Hodgson struck his only goal for England in their 4-0 defeat of Wales in Wrexham in the British International Championships. Future red Ernie Blenkinsop also played for the English. For Mr Bowen 1976 - The reds took part in a testimonial match for Dave Bowen, drawing 2-2 with Northampton Town at the County Ground with Emlyn Hughes and Ian Callaghan on the scoresheet. Bowen was Manager during their only season in the top flight, as well as leading the Cobblers to the Third Division title, and later taking charge of Wales. A reds treble for Young England 2001 - David Mannix, David Raven and Mark Smyth all played for England Under-17’s in their friendly against Poland at Peterborough United’s London Road Stadium. Mannix and Smyth both scored in a 6-0 thumping.
