Digger arrives 1987 - John Barnes was signed from Watford for £900,000. His transfer had been heavily trailed for at least six months, and Kopites were not disappointed by his performances once he arrived, as he helped us to two League titles, FA Cup, League Cup and two FA Charity Shields during an Anfield career in which he scored 108 goals in 407 appearances. He was also twice voted Football Writers’ Player Of The Year, as well as once by his fellow players, eventually moving on to Newcastle United on a free transfer in August 1997. In comes Jordan 2011 – Midfielder Jordan Henderson signed from Sunderland for £16m. He has notched 33 times in 492 reds games by the time he turned 33, becoming club captain and helping us to claim the Premier League title, UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, two League Cups and FA Community Shield. Births and death 1954 - Forward Alan Waddle was born in Wallsend. He signed from Halifax Town for £40,000 in June 1973 but only made 22 appearances in his four years at Anfield, netting just once, at Goodison Park in December 1973, as his route to the first team was usually blocked by Kevin Keegan and John Toshack, although he was on the bench for the European Cup Final in 1977. He moved on to Leicester City that September. His cousin Chris went on to great things with Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, Olympique de Marseille and England. 1979 - Late-1990’s reserves winger Nicky Rizzo was born in Sydney. He never made a senior reds appearance, and moved on to Crystal Palace and then lower League football in Italy, but is now back in his homeland running his own soccer school. 1947 – Wing-half Charlie Wilson died. He signed from Stockport County on a free transfer in December 1897, bagging three goals in 91 reds games before becoming a Scout at Anfield in 1905, a role he held until the Second World War. Reds honoured 2003 - Gérard Houllier was awarded an Honorary OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours. On the same day, agreement was reached to sign Steve Finnan from Fulham for £3.5m. He officially completed his move to Anfield three weeks later. 2022 - Mohamed Salah was named the PFA Player of the Year for the second time, with Thiago Alcântara, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Alisson Becker, Sadio Mané and Virgil van Dijk joining him in the PFA Team of the Year. On the move 2009 - John Achterberg was appointed goalkeeping coach, leaving his position at Tranmere Rovers. On the same day, ex-reds full-back Julian Dicks left his role as Manager of Wivenhoe Town by mutual consent. Meanwhile, ex-red Titi Camara was appointed Head Coach of Guinea, in addition to his role as National Technical Director. He remained in the top job for just over three months. 2012 - Kevin MacDonald left Aston Villa’s coaching staff after seventeen years with the Villains. 2014 - Former Academy full-back Calum Woods signed for Preston North End, having been released by Huddersfield Town at the end of the previous campaign. He played 82 times before joining Bradford City on a free transfer last January. 2001 - Mike Marsh signed for Boston United from Southport for £15,000. He netted once in seven games for the Pilgrims as they clinched the Conference title. 2017 – Ex-reserves forward Jack Dunn signed for Tranmere Rovers, so far making sixteen senior appearances without notching. 2016 – Future keeper Andy Lonergan joined Wolverhampton Wanderers from Fulham, playing fourteen times before returning to former club Leeds United in August 2017. On the same day, future reds coach Gary O'Neil signed for Bristol City. He scored once in 36 games before moving on to Bolton Wanderers in August 2018 after being released by the Robins. 2023 – Midfielder Naby Keïta signed for SV Werder Bremen, having left the reds at the end of the previous season. However, injuries restricted him to just five outings in his first campaign back in Germany. Tommy for Scotland 1963 - Tommy Lawrence won the first of his three Scotland caps as they lost a friendly 1-0 to the Republic of Ireland at Dalymount Park in Dublin. Fellow red Ian St. John also played. Winning a trophy 1984 - Ian Rush netted in the final minute as we drew 1-1 with Tottenham Hotspur in Swaziland to win the Royal Swazi Sun Soccer Challenge 6-3 on aggregate. On tour We have won US tour games three times on this day over the years. 1946 - We beat Kearny Celtic Scots 3-1, with Cyril Done grabbing a brace and Willie Fagan also netting. 1948 - A New York All Stars lost 5-2 at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn. Billy Liddell and Albert Stubbins struck twice each, with Willie Fagan also on the scoresheet. 1953 - Inside-right Sammy Smyth bagged a treble when we thumped St. Louis All Stars 5-1, with Billy Liddell adding a brace. Final caps 1996 - Future red Torben Piechnik won his fifteenth and final cap as a substitute in Denmark’s 1-1 Euro ’96 draw with Portugal at Hillsborough. 1999 - Vladimír Šmicer won his last cap as a Racing Club de Lens player, and 38th in total, as the Czech Republic beat Scotland 3-2 in a Euro 2000 qualifier in Prague, alongside future clubmate Patrik Berger. Meanwhile, Mark Kennedy won his last cap while with Wimbledon, and 22nd to date, as the Republic of Ireland beat FYR Macedonia 1-0 in Dublin, with Robbie Keane playing his ninth and final game while with Wolverhampton Wanderers. On the same day, Nicolas Anelka made his ninth appearance for France, and final one as an Arsenal player, as they won 1-0 in Andorra in another qualifier. Meanwhile, Dean Saunders won his final cap as an SL Benfica player, and 69th in all, as Wales were beaten 2-0 by Denmark at Anfield, a result that kept the Danes on course for a play-off spot. Future reds Craig Bellamy and Paul Jones also played. Robbie Fowler, Haukur Ingi Gudnason, Sami Hyypiä, Jamie Redknapp and future red Emile Heskey all also played in qualifiers that day, with Kevin Keegan taking charge of England. 2013 - Mamadou Sakho won his final cap for France as a Paris Saint-Germain player in their 3-0 defeat by Brazil in Porto Alegre. 2011 – Alou Diarra won his last cap as a Girondins de Bordeaux player, his 34th to date, as France beat Poland 1-0 in a friendly in Warsaw. 2008 – Dirk Kuyt and future reds coach John Heitinga played as the Netherlands beat Italy 3-0 in Berne, while ex-red Anelka featured as France were held to a goalless draw by Romania in Zurich. 2000 – Alberto Aquilani won his eighth and final cap for Italy Under-15’s as they lost 2-1 to France. Dirk’s first 2012 - Dirk Kuyt won his first cap as a Fenerbahçe Spor Kulübü player as the Netherlands lost 1-0 to a Denmark side captained by Daniel Agger in a European Championships Finals game in Kharkiv, with future reds coach John Heitinga also playing. Ex-red Raúl Meireles also featured in the competition that day, with Kolo Touré bagging his last goal as a Manchester City player as Ivory Coast drew 2-2 in a World Cup qualifier in Morocco. Meanwhile, ex-red Javier Mascherano was in friendly action as future red Sadio Mané and Victor Moses played in World Cup qualifiers. The Guv’nor in charge 1993 - Future red Paul Ince captained his country for the first time, becoming the first black player ever to skipper England, as they lost 2-0 to the USA in Boston. On the same day, Mark Kennedy faced future red Brad Friedel in the US Nike Cup as the USA beat the Republic of Ireland 2-1 in Boston, while future red Mario Balotelli netted for Italy Under-21’s in their 4-0 friendly win in Denmark. 2019 – Roberto Firmino scored with ex-red Philippe Coutinho converting a spot-kick as Brazil thumped Honduras 7-0 in a friendly in Porto Alegre. Ryan Babel won his last cap as a Fulham player, with Virgil van Dijk captaining a side that also included Gini Wijnaldum as Portugal beat the Netherlands 1-0 in the UEFA Nations League Final in Porto. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Alisson Becker, Joe Gomez, Caoimhín Kelleher, ex-red Raheem Sterling and future reds Luis Díaz, Arthur Melo and Takumi Minamino also played for their countries that day. 2018 – Ex-red Iago Aspas scored as Spain beat Tunisia a friendly 1-0 in Russia, while future red Ozan Kabak netted as Turkey Under-18’s beat Sweden 3-2. God married 2001 - Robbie Fowler married Kerrie at Duns Castle in Scotland. They already had two young daughters, Madison and Jaya, with a third following a year later, and have since added a son to their brood. Still the masters 2002 - The Liverpool Legends team won the Irish Masters in Belfast, with former reserves regular John Durnin grabbing both goals in their 2-0 Final victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers. Barclay elected 1890 – William Barclay was elected Vice Chairman of Everton. He later worked as a Secretary-c**-Manager for the first four years of the reds’ existence. Also in international action 1983 – Glenn Hysén played for Sweden as they lost a European Championships qualifier 1-0 to Romania in Solna. 1985 – Future red John Barnes appeared as England lost a friendly 1-0 in Mexico. 2015 – Future red Ragnar Klavan captained Estonia as they won a friendly 2-0 in Finland. 2021 – Diogo Jota played as Portugal beat Israel 4-0 in a friendly in Lisbon. 2022 – Conor Bradley, Diogo Jota, Naby Keïta, Kostas Tsimikas, future red Giorgi Mamardashvili and ex-reds Steven Caulker and Xherdan Shaqiri played for their countries, with Rigobert Song taking charge of Cameroon as they beat Burundi 1-0 in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Tanzania and Bernard Diomède managing France Under-20’s in their 4-1 friendly defeat of Mexico in Salon-de-Provence. 2023 – Josh Davidson played for England Under-18’s in their 2-2 draw with Norway in the XXVII Torneio Internacional de Lisboa 2022/23 in Lisbon. -
An Anfield farewell 1996 - Ian Rush played his final reds game at Anfield, with Stan Collymore scoring the only goal of the game against Middlesbrough. He was applauded onto the pitch by a ‘guard of honour’ from both teams. Heading to Istanbul 2005 - We held Chelsea to a goalless draw at Stamford Bridge in the first leg of our Champions League Semi-final. The evening was only slightly spoiled by Xabi Alonso’s unwarranted booking that would rule him out of the Anfield return. Steven Gerrard had an emergency dental operation on the morning of the game. FA Cup semi-finals We have twice played FA Cup Semi-finals on this day over the years. 1963 - We lost 1-0 to Leicester City at Hillsborough, with Mike Stringfellow heading in the winner, the first of his five goals against the reds, and Gordon Banks keeping the reds at bay. Winger Kevin Lewis made his 82nd and final reds appearance that day. 1977 - We beat Everton 3-0 at Maine Road in a replay, to keep on course for the treble. Our goals came from a Phil Neal penalty, Jimmy Case and Ray Kennedy that day. Both sides also had strong penalty claims turned down. Title blow 2014 – We lost 2-0 to Chelsea at Anfield to deal our title chances a major blow. The visitors were time-wasting from the first minute as we felt the absence of the suspended Jordan Henderson. Steven Gerrard slipped at the end of the first half to allow Demba Ba a clear run on goal, and he slipped the ball past Simon Mignolet. We failed to break down the Blues’ blanket defence, with Willian nabbing a stoppage time second, the first of his four goals past us. Iago Aspas made his fifteenth and final reds appearance, from the bench with future red Mohamed Salah and ex-red Fernando Torres both featuring for the visitors. On the same day, Luis Suárez was named PFA Player of the Year for a season in which he struck 31 times in total in 37 reds outings. He was also included in the Team of the Year, alongside Steven Gerrard, Daniel Sturridge and future red Adam Lallana. This was Gerrard’s eighth and last appearance in this list, a record in the Premier League era. 2024 – We were held to a 2-2 draw at West Ham United as our title challenge unravelled further. Jarrod Bowen headed the Hammers in front before the break, with Andy Robertson levelling shortly after half time. We took the lead when a Cody Gakpo effort bounced off Angelo Ogbonna, Tomáš Souček and keeper Alphonse Areola before finding the back of the net. However, Michail Antonio scored his sixth and most recent goal against the reds to secure a point. Happy birthdays 1990 - Defender Martin Kelly was born in Whiston. He made his senior bow as a sub in our Champions League win at PSV Eindhoven in December 2008, striking once in 62 reds games before joining Crystal Palace in August 2014 for a reported £2m. 1904 - Right-back Bob Done was born in Runcorn. He struck thirteen times in 155 reds games following his arrival from his hometown side in April 1926. He left for Reading for £150 in May 1935. 1873 – Wing-half Charlie Wilson was born in Sutton, St Helens. He signed from Stockport County on a free transfer in December 1897, bagging three goals in 91 reds games before becoming a Scout at Anfield in 1905, a role he held until the Second World War. 1959 – Academy Director Frank McParland was born in Liverpool. He started out in 1995 by assisting John Owens with the Under-14’s. When the Academy opened in 1999 he was handed a full-time role as head of the community coaching department. Gérard Houllier later gave him a scouting role before Rafael Benítez made him Joint Chief Scout, moving to Bolton Wanderers as General Manager in July 2007, although he only remained there three months. He returned to Melwood in May 2009, moving up to be Director of Academy and Player Development two years later. He left the club again in November 2013. 2007 – Keeper Kornel Miściur was born in Scarborough to Polish parents. He joined the Academy from Hull City in the summer of 2023, turning pro in October 2024. Another title disappears from view 2002 - Michael Owen made his 150th League appearance as we lost 1-0 at Tottenham Hotspur, thanks to a Gus Poyet goal. It was our first defeat in fifteen League games and made winning the title a near impossibility. This was also Jari Litmanen’s 43rd and final game in a reds shirt. Meanwhile, a Neil Mellor brace sent the Under-19’s into the Final of the National Play-offs, as we overcame Nottingham Forest 2-1, to set up a two-legged tie with Arsenal. These goals took the boy Mellor to 44 goals for the season. On the same day, future Anfield star Anthony Le Tallec was on target for Le Havre as the French outfit were promoted into the top division by beating Laval 4-1. Thumping the Geordies 2013 - Daniel Sturridge and Jordan Henderson struck twice each, with Daniel Agger and Fabio Borini also on target as we won 6-0 at Newcastle United, with Mathieu Debuchy sent off for the home side late on. In the best team 2008 - Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres and ex-red David James were all named in the PFA Team of the Year. 2003 – Ex-reds keeper Brad Friedel was voted into the PFA Team of the Year, having kept fifteen clean sheets in the League for Blackburn Rovers. Up and down 1895 - We lost a Test Match 1-0 to Bury at Ewood Park that relegated us after just one season in the top flight. Robert Neill made his reds bow in this game. He was possibly our shortest ever centre-half, standing at just five foot four inches. Also debuting were keeper John Whitehead and forward John Cleland, who played his only senior reds game while on loan from Edinburgh side St. Bernard’s, while outside-left John Drummond made his eighteenth and final appearance. Bury keeper Archie Montgomery was sent off late on for kicking out at Harry Bradshaw. This was William Barclay’s last game in charge of the side. 1896 – John McKenna managed the reds for the final time as we lost another Test Match, going down 2-0 at West Bromwich Albion’s Stoney Lane ground. However, previous results were enough to ensure our promotion. Milestone games 1908 - We played our 500th League game, beating Bury 2-1 at Anfield in our final game of the season thanks to a Ronald Orr brace, with Billy Hibbert bagging one of his thirteen goals against the reds. We ended the season in eighth position. 1985 – Alan Hansen played his 400th reds game as we drew 0-0 at Ipswich Town. 2022 – Jordan Henderson featured in the UEFA Champions League for the fiftieth time as we beat Villarreal 2-0 in the first leg of our Semi-final at Anfield, on our way to reach the Final for the tenth time. The score was level at the break, with Pervis Estupiñán deflected a Henderson cross into his own goal before Sadio Mané double our lead. Sam’s last 1912 – Forward Sam Gilligan bagged his sixteenth and final reds goal in the second minute of our 1-0 top-flight victory at Oldham Athletic. Disaster in North London 1935 - Willie Evans scored a hat-trick for Tottenham Hotspur as they trounced us 5-1 at White Hart Lane. Berry Nieuwenhuys grabbed our consolation while forward Sam English played his fiftieth and final reds game. George Hunt struck one of his five goals past us, with Len Bolan also on the scoresheet. Bill yet again 1903 - Left-half Bill Goldie played his 174th and final reds game, actually his 129th consecutive reds appearance, and 119th straight game in the League, as we won 2-0 at Wolverhampton Wanderers in our last game of the season, thanks to goals from Sam Raybould and Jack Cox. Left-back John Glover and inside-right George Livingstone both played their last reds games. For Razor 1991 - A testimonial match for Ray Kennedy was staged at Highbury. A reds team beat Arsenal 3-1, with Jan Mølby, David Speedie and Peter Beardsley on the scoresheet. A treble for Jimmy 1931 - Left-half Jimmy McDougall grabbed a hat-trick as we were beaten 8-4 by Yeovil & Petters United at their Huish Park Stadium in a friendly, with Cyril Done nabbing our other goal. First and last times with the armband 1982 - Phil Thompson skippered England for the sixth and final time as they beat Wales 1-0 in the British International Championships in Cardiff. Joe Corrigan, ex-red Joey Jones, Terry McDermott, Phil Neal and Ian Rush all also featured. 1977 - Future red Kenny Dalglish captained Scotland for the first time as they beat Sweden 3-1 in a friendly at Hampden Park. In and out 1936 – Keeper Stanley Kane was sold to Southend United. He had only made six senior appearances after signing on in July 1934, having left Birmingham. 1920 – Forward Peter McKinney signed from Consett Celtic. He struck once in three reds appearances, all in 1920/21, and later emigrated to the USA to join New York Giants. 1999 - Stephen Warnock signed as a professional. He played 67 reds games, notching once, before moving to Blackburn Rovers in January 2007 for £1.5m, although he moved on to Aston Villa in August 2009. Twice against the Blades and Hammers We have twice ended the season by playing Sheffield United in the top flight at Anfield on this day over the years. 1907 - We drew 2-2 with forward Sam Raybould on target in his 226th and final reds game. Bill McPherson also struck in our final game of the season as we finished fifteenth. Left-back Tom Rogers debuted in this fixture. 1914 - Tom Miller netted a brace as we won 2-1, just two days after losing our first ever FA Cup Final. 1957 - We beat West Ham United in a Second Division meeting, with Billy Liddell netting the only goal of the game from the spot in the final minute. 1974 - John Toshack struck at Upton Park as we drew a top-flight encounter 2-2, with Kevin Keegan on target at the death. Alec Lindsay had a penalty saved by Mervyn Day in the first half. Trevor Brooking and Frank Lampard both struck for the home side. International debut once more 1927 - Ex-red Billy Lacey represented his third different country, playing in the Republic of Ireland’s second ever senior international, as they lost 2-1 to Italy ‘B’ in Dublin. This followed eighteen caps he had won for Ireland and another eight for Northern Ireland. Beaten by Rovers We have twice lost to Blackburn Rovers on this day in history. 1929 - Birthday boy Bob Done converted a penalty as we lost a top-flight meeting 2-1 at Ewood Park. 1893 - We lost an Anfield friendly 1-0. Other reds games 1968 – We beat Fulham 4-1 at Anfield with Allan Clarke putting the visitors in front with one of his seven goals against the reds, despite appearing to be offside. Ian Callaghan and Roger Hunt ensure we led at half time, with Hunt and Tony Hateley on target after the break. 1901 – Jack Cox and Bill Goldie struck as we defeated Nottingham Forest 2-0 in L4. Young England reds 2018 – Future red Harvey Elliott struck for England Under-15’s as they beat the Czech Republic 6-4 in a tournament game in Italy. 2016 – Bobby Duncan scored as England Under-15’s drew 1-1 with Russia in Italy. 2002 - Mark Smyth was on target as England Under-17’s beat Finland 3-2 in a European Championships Finals game in Denmark. Clubmate David Raven was skipper and David Mannix also played. 1993 – Future reds Academy coach Mike Sheron bagged a brace as England Under-21’s beat the Netherlands 3-0 in a European Championships qualifier at Fratton Park. On the same day, future red Bjørn Tore Kvarme played for Norway Under-21’s in their 5-1 thumping of Turkey in a European Championships qualifier. 1988 - Gary Ablett won his only Under-21’s cap as England drew 2-2 with France in the Semi-final of the European Championships at Highbury. Unfortunately, France won 6-4 on aggregate. Future red Michael Thomas also played. On the same day, Peter Beardsley, Gary Gillespie, Ray Houghton, Steve McMahon, Steve Nicol, ex-red Ian Rush and future reds Glenn Hysén, István Kozma, Dean Saunders and Rigobert Song all also played for their countries. Splashing about 1894 - Outside-left Hugh McQueen nearly died when he dived off a springboard at Southport baths where the team were training, as he could not swim! He made 61 reds appearances in total after signing from Leith Athletic in October 1892, bagging eighteen goals and helping us to the Lancashire League and Second Division titles in successive seasons before joining Derby County in July 1895. Potter for the Irish 2004 - Darren Potter made his debut for the Republic of Ireland’s Under-21’s as they drew 2-2 in a friendly in Poland. Ex-red Daniel Sjölund struck as the Finnish Under-21’s beat Bosnia & Herzegovina 3-1 away from home. Robbie Foy played for Scotland at the same level while Jimmy Ryan featured for the Irish Under-16’s on the same day, with future red Daniel Agger in action for Denmark Under-20’s and future red Ragnar Klavan playing for the senior Estonia side. Other internationals 1983 – Glenn Hysén, Mark Lawrenson, Sammy Lee, Phil Neal, Ian Rush and Ronnie Whelan all played for their countries, with ex-red Joey Jones reaching half a century of caps for Wales in their 1-0 European Championships qualifying defeat of Bulgaria in Wrexham. 1991 - Future red Nigel Clough netted the only goal of the game as England B beat Iceland in a friendly at Vicarage Road. Our first League Cup 1981 - We claimed our first League Cup by beating West Ham United 2-1 in a Villa Park replay. Paul Goddard opened the scoring for the Hammers before Kenny Dalglish equalised with a glorious volley, to complete his record of scoring in every round. Alan Hansen was the unlikely match-winner, with a deflected header from a corner after half an hour. Ian Rush made only his second ever reds appearance in this game as veteran winger Steve Heighway had failed a late fitness test. This was the first time that the winners received medals, rather than tankards! Reds honoured 2002 - Gérard Houllier was awarded the Légion d’Honneur, one of the highest civil awards in France, for his achievements in the football world, both with the reds and the French national set-up. 2003 - El-Hadji Diouf was named African Footballer Of The Year for the second successive season. Emile off the mark 2000 - We won a Premiership meeting 3-0 at Coventry City, with our goals coming from a Michael Owen brace and Emile Heskey’s first reds strike. Ex-red Steve Ogrizovic made his 600th appearance for the Sky Blues in this game. Owen’s second goal was our 500th in the Premier League. First and last goals 1922 – Winger Cyril Gilhespy scored the first of his three reds strikes as we beat Oldham Athletic 2-0 at Anfield, after Harry Chambers had opened the scoring. 1961 – Winger Johnny Morrissey struck his sixth and last goal for the club as our Second Division trip to Sheffield United ended in a 1-1 draw. Beating the Baggies 2006 - We won 2-0 at West Bromwich Albion, thanks to goals from Robbie Fowler and Djibril Cissé, from a sixty-yard Xabi Alonso pass. This was Robbie’s 173rd reds goal, moving him up to fifth in our all-time scoring list ahead of King Kenny. This was our eighth straight win at The Hawthorns. 1972 - We won there by the same score when Tommy Smith converted a penalty with Chris Lawler also on target. Feeling blue at Goodison 1904 - Our biggest defeat on this day came when Alex ‘Sandy’ Young scored four of his twelve goals past us for Everton in their 5-2 win on a not so Good Friday, which helped us on our way to relegation, while the Blues ended the season in third. Right-half Maurice Parry bagged his first reds goal, with Bobby Robinson also netting and Sam Raybould missing a penalty. Keeper Charles Cotton played his twelfth and final reds game, with Sam Wolstenholme also on target for the Toffees. 1916 - We also lost across the park in a Wartime League match, going down 1-0. 2017 – We beat Everton 3-1 at Anfield with Sadio Mané on target before Matthew Pennington equalised. Philippe Coutinho and Divock Origi then secured the victory. European ton up 2010 – We played our hundredth game in the Fairs Cup/UEFA Cup/Europa League at SL Benfica in the first leg of our UEFA Europa League Quarter-final. He made his first-team debut in September 2019, failing to score in four senior appearances before moving to Sheffield United in October 2020 for a club record £23.5m. 1989 – French forward David N’Gog was born in Gennevilliers. He signed from Paris St. Germain for £1.5m in July 2008, netting nineteen times in 94 reds outings, although he only started on 41 of those occasions. He was sold to Bolton Wanderers for £4m in August 2011. 1957 - Former reserves centre-back Alex Cribley was born in Liverpool. He moved to Wigan Athletic in November 1980 after failing to make the grade at Anfield. He spent eight years with the Lancashire side, nabbing eighteen goals in 328 games before retiring due to injury and becoming a physio with Wigan, being employed by the club for more than two decades. 1933 - Outside-right Brian Jackson was born in Walton-on-Thames in Surrey. He signed from Leyton Orient in November 1951 for £6,500 and forward Don Woan. He netted eleven times in 133 reds games before joining Port Vale for £1,700 in July 1958. 1903 – Centre-forward Les Bruton was born in Foleshill, Coventry. Ged’s return 2002 - A famous night in Anfield history came as we defeated Roma 2-0 to qualify for the Quarter-finals of the Champions League in our first season in the current format of the competition. Jari Litmanen’s penalty and an Emile Heskey header ensured we did not miss the injured Michael Owen or suspended Didi Hamann. The night was made complete by the emotional return of Gérard Houllier to the dug-out after heart surgery. Another win in the North East 2006 - We won 3-1 at Newcastle United as we played with three centre-backs and two wing-backs for the first time under Rafael Benítez. Peter Crouch and Steven Gerrard struck in the first half before Djibril Cissé converted a penalty after Jean-Alain Boumsong was sent off for bringing down Crouch. Left-half Jimmy McInnes scored his only reds goal on his debut, with Jack Balmer and Alf Hanson also netting. McInnes only played 48 times for us, and was the club’s Secretary between 1955 and 1965, before hanging himself from the turnstile area of the Kop four days after our first ever FA Cup Final win. United beaten 1995 - We defeated Manchester United 2-0 in the League at Anfield, thanks to a Steve Bruce own goal, the second he had netted for us after a previous one while with Norwich City, and a sweet strike from Jamie Redknapp who was reaching a century of League outings for the reds. This result helped ensure United were denied a third consecutive League title that season. Most recently 2017 – We drew 1-1 at Manchester City, with ex-City player James Milner putting us in front from the spot before Sergio Agüero struck one of his seven goals past us. Signing on 1935 - Centre-forward Fred Howe joined on a free transfer from Hyde United. He struck 36 times in 94 outings before joining Manchester City in June 1938. Yet another draw 1975 - We were held for the sixth consecutive League game, this time 1-1 at Leicester City with John Toshack notching our goal, while midfielder Peter Cormack was playing his hundredth League game for the reds. This run helped ensure we missed out on the League title by just two points. Former reds target Frank Worthington netted for the home side. On the move 1987 - Future red Paul Stewart joined Manchester City from Blackpool for £200,000. He bagged an impressive thirty goals in 63 games, before moving to Tottenham Hotspur for £1.7m in June 1988. 2004 - Andy Parkinson, who was in the victorious FA Youth Cup squad in 1996, rejoined Notts County on loan from Sheffield United. He played nine times in this spell. 2012 – Former reserves forward Lauri Dalla Valle joined Exeter City on loan from Fulham, playing five times without notching. 2013 – Ex-reds forward Michael Owen announced he would retire from playing at the end of the season, with his career having stalled at Stoke City. Beginning and end 1941 – Winger Jackie Sheldon died. He grabbed twenty goals in 147 reds games after joining from Manchester United in November 1913, playing in our first ever FA Cup Final in 1914. He retired in 1922 after breaking his leg, with his name forever tainted by being the go-between in our match-fixing scandal with Manchester United in April 1915. 2011 - Lucas Leiva became a father for the first time, to Pedro. Other reds games 1994 – We beat Chelsea 2-1 at Anfield. Ian Rush put is front before Craig Burley headed into his own net and then pulled a goal back for the visitors. 1980 – We defeated Leeds United 3-0 in L4 as David Johnson struck either side of an Alan Kennedy goal to extend our lead over Manchester United at the top of the table to six points. 1960 – Huddersfield Town held us to a 2-2 draw at home in a Second Division encounter. Dave Hickson and Johnny Wheeler put us two goals ahead after sixteen minutes, with Billy Liddell having struck the ball so hard after just four minutes that it had burst! Happy birthday Sammy 1959 - Sammy Lee was born in Liverpool. He had a fine career in the reds midfield, bagging nineteen goals in 295 games, helping us to two European Cups, four League titles, four League Cups and the FA Charity Shield. He returned as a coach in 1992, initially being put in charge of the reserves. He left the backroom staff in the summer of 2004 for a full-time post with England, before joining Bolton Wanderers, but returned to Anfield in May 2008 as Assistant Manager, staying in that role until June 2011. Legends’ farewells 1992 - A sad day as Bob Paisley had to retire from the board due to ill health. He died four years later. 2013 - Jamie Carragher announced his retirement from playing at the end of the season. The tough defender ended his career having bagged five goals in 737 reds appearances, leaving him second in the club’s all-time appearance holders. He helped us to claim the European Cup, UEFA Cup, FA Cup, two UEFA Super Cups, two League Cups and two FA Charity/Community Shields. Other birthdays 1904 - Tom ‘Tiny’ Bradshaw was born in Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire. He struck four times in 291 appearances at centre-half after signing from Bury for £8,000 in January 1930. He returned to his native land in September 1938, joining Third Lanark for £600. 1969 - Jean-Michel Ferri was born in Lyon. The French midfielder arrived from Turkish side Istanbulspor for £1.8m in December 1998 to become Gérard Houllier’s first signing. He left after just eight months and two substitute appearances, having been rumoured to be Le Boss’s mole in the dressing room. 1946 - Tom Hicks was born in Houston, Texas. He took over the club with George Gillett Jr. in March 2007 but was finally driven out of the club in October 2010. 2005 - Midfielder Bobby Clark was born in Epsom. He arrived from Newcastle United in August 2021, turning professional in February 2022. He has so far made six first-team appearances. Red centurions 2015 – Brendan Rodgers took charge of his hundredth reds League game as we endured a dour goalless draw at Goodison Park, with Jordon Ibe coming closest when he struck a post. 1973 – John Toshack reached a century of reds outings as we lost an FA Cup Fourth Round replay 2-0 at Manchester City, thanks to goals from Colin Bell and Tommy Booth. Twice from behind at the Reebok 2004 - Sami Hyypiä and Steven Gerrard both netted equalisers as we drew 2-2 at Bolton Wanderers. Bolton’s first goal, scored by Nicky Hunt, was the 200th League goal conceded since Gérard Houllier took sole charge. Youri Djorkaeff scored Bolton’s other goal. 1948 - We also faced Bolton, losing 3-0 at Burnden Park in another top-flight encounter with Nat Lofthouse netting one of his eight goals against the reds and Don Howe and Malcolm Barrass also on target. Martin born 1984 - Centre-back Martin Škrtel was born in Handlová. The tough Slovakian signed from Zenit St. Petersburg for £6.5m in January 2008 to become our most expensive defender to date. He notched eighteen goals in 320 games in total, including one in our Carling Cup win at Wembley in February 2012, moving on to Fenerbahçe SK for £5.5m in July 2016. Unfortunately, he also put through his own net a joint club record eight times. 2010 - He skippered the side for the first time as we were held to a goalless draw at Anfield by Utrecht in our final UEFA Europa League group game. Dirk Kuyt played his fiftieth European game for the reds as the 37,800 crowd was boosted by free kids’ tickets. Forward Nathan Eccleston played his ninth and last reds game. He struck six times in 141 reds games across two spells at Anfield prior to the First World War, first arriving from Barnsley St. Peter’s in November 1903 for £500. He helped us to the Second Division championship in 1905 and our second League title a year later, joining Reading in June 1909, becoming their club captain but he only stayed for a season before returning to Anfield in May 1910. He only played five times in this second spell before joining Notts County in July 1911. In comes Wilson 1897 - Wing-half Charlie Wilson signed from Stockport County on a free transfer. He bagged three goals in 91 reds games before becoming a Scout at Anfield in 1905, a role he held until the Second World War. A black day for the club 1981 - Bill Shankly died. Undoubtedly the greatest ever influence on the reds, he arrived as Manager in December 1959 and shook the club to its roots. He took us out of the Second Division in 1962 as champions and three years later led us to our first ever FA Cup. He also led us to three League titles, the UEFA Cup and another FA Cup before retiring in July 1974. Luis at the treble 2012 - Luis Suárez scored a hat-trick as we won 5-2 at Norwich City, becoming the first red to score three goals in the same away League fixture in successive seasons, with Nuri Şahin bagging the last of his three reds strikes and Leon Barnett deflecting a Steven Gerrard shot into his own net. Aldo’s treble 1987 - John Aldridge scored a hat-trick past Peter Shilton, including two penalties, in our 4-0 defeat of Derby County. Peter Beardsley bagged the other, while John Barnes had a goal disallowed for scoring direct from an apparently indirect free-kick as Ronnie Whelan played his 300th reds game. Moving on 1982 - Terry McDermott left the reds to re-join Newcastle United. He signed from South Liverpool in December 1920, failing to score in four senior outings, before returning to his former club the following year. A sad day 1984 - Jack Balmer died in Liverpool. He had bagged 111 goals in 309 reds games after signing from Everton in May 1935, including trebles in three consecutive matches on our way to the League title in 1947. He also played in the FA Cup Final three years later. 1899 - Thomas ‘Harry’ Bradshaw died of tuberculosis in Tottenham. He joined from Northwich Victoria in October 1893 and netted 51 times in 138 games for the reds, helping us to our first two Second Division titles and was the first reds player to win senior international honours. He left Anfield to join Tottenham Hotspur in May 1898. 2004 - Left-back Eddie Spicer died. He was decorated for bravery whilst serving in the Royal Marines in World War Two, going on to net twice in 168 reds games, helping us to the first post-war League title and featuring in the 1950 FA Cup Final. Unfortunately, a second broken leg ended his career in December 1953. 2013 - Forward Wayne Harrison died aged just 46 after suffering from pancreatic cancer. He signed from Oldham Athletic for £250,000 in January 1985 at the age of seventeen, then a record fee for a teenager, although he never made a senior reds appearance before having to retire due to injury in the summer of 1991, aged just 23. King Billy’s four 1954 - Billy Liddell scored four goals as we thumped Ipswich Town 6-2 at Anfield in our first season after relegation. Also on the scoresheet were Louis Bimpson and John Evans. Rushie starts out 1979 - Ian Rush signed as a professional for Chester. He bagged seventeen goals in 39 games at Sealand Road, before moving to Anfield for £300,000 the following April. Smiling at a treble 1925 - Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers and the visitors’ Hughie Gallacher each bagged a hat-trick as we beat Newcastle United 6-3 at Anfield. Centre-half David Pratt scored his only reds goal, with Cyril Oxley and Dick Forshaw also on the scoresheet. These were the first of Gallacher’s eight goals past us, while our third goal was the club’s 2,000th in all competitions. 1923 - The Geordies left Anfield with both points after winning 1-0. A pair from The Valley 1953 - Don Welsh signed full-back Frank Lock and forward John Evans from Charlton Athletic, for £7,500 and £12,500 respectively. On the same day, right-half and future Manager Phil Taylor made his 314th and final League appearance as we lost 5-2 at West Bromwich Albion, with centre-forward Jack Smith turning out for the 59th and last time. Alan A’Court was on target for the reds, with full-back Ray Lambert scoring from the spot, his second and final reds goal. Frank Griffin struck the last two of his six goals against the reds, with Ronnie Allen scoring the final one of his five, and Ray Barlow and Johnny Nicholls also on target. 1936 - We also lost 3-1 at The Hawthorns, with Fred Howe grabbing our consolation. Harry Jones bagged a brace for the Baggies, with Stan Wood netting one of his five goals past us. Most recent Christmas goal 1957 - Tony Rowley scored our most recent goal on Christmas Day as we lost 3-1 in a Second Division fixture at Grimsby Town, with right-back John Molyneux reaching a century of reds games. 1930 - We also visited Blundell Park for a game that ended goalless, with full-back Tommy Lucas making his 300th League outing for the reds. Christmas derbies 1916 – We were beaten 1-0 in a friendly at Goodison Park. 1939 - We lost a friendly 3-2 to Everton at Anfield with both our goals coming from Willie Fagan. 1940 - We won a Wartime League game 3-1 at home, thanks to a Len Carney brace and Berry Nieuwenhuys. Bradley into the breach 1909 - Left-half Jim Bradley stepped in as an emergency goalkeeper, helping us to a 3-0 top-flight win over Bolton Wanderers at Anfield. Arthur Goddard and Ronald Orr grabbed our goals, to add to a Jack Parkinson penalty. We have faced Bolton seven times in the First Division on Christmas Day, winning five and losing just once. 1914 – Centre-half Bob Ferguson played his hundredth reds game in our 1-0 win at Burnden Park. Forward Billy Lacey was our scorer. 1911 – Jack Parkinson netted the only goal of the game at Anfield. 1905 – We were held to a 2-2 draw in L4. Albert Shepherd scored the first of his twelve goals against the reds after Bob Clifford had opened the scoring. Joe Hewitt and Arthur Goddard both netted after the break. 1902 - Our biggest win was a 5-1 thumping at Anfield when Charlie Wilson struck a brace, his final goals for the club. Jack Cox and Edgar Chadwick were also on the scoresheet, with Sam Raybould adding a penalty. Peter Platt saved a spot-kick from Laurie Bell. 1897 – Forward Abe Hartley debuted as we won an away meeting 2-0, thanks to goals from Dan Cunliffe and Andrew McCowie. 1894 – We lost 1-0 at their old Pike’s Lane ground, with Jimmy Settle nabbing the first of his eleven goals past us. Arsenal again 1935 - Arsenal won for the fourth consecutive season in the League at Anfield, with Joe Hulme scoring one of his ten goals against the reds. No team has since equalled this feat. 1947 - They also left L4 with both points when Bob Priday netted in a 3-1 defeat. Ronnie Rooke struck twice for the Gunners, with Don Roper netting the first of his five past us. Eased in on his debut 1946 - John Easdale made his reds bow as we lost 2-1 at Stoke City, with Albert Stubbins netting late on for the reds after a Freddie Steele brace had put the Potters in control. 1941 - We also lost at the Victoria Ground, going down 4-3 in a Wartime League match, with our goals coming from Berry Nieuwenhuys, Stan Polk and Billy Liddell. 1906 – Forward John Lipsham debuted in our goalless draw at Manchester United, the first of just three outings for the club. 1948 – We held United to a goalless draw at Maine Road as Bob Paisley reached a century of reds appearances. Two-ton Jimmy 1931 - Right-back Jimmy ‘Parson’ Jackson played his 200th reds game in our 3-1 defeat of Sheffield Wednesday in a top-flight encounter at Anfield. Harry Burgess struck one of his nine goals past us, with Gordon Gunson bagging a brace and Harold Barton also on target. Tommy’s last 1913 – Centre-forward Tommy Gracie bagged his fifth and final reds goal as we beat Manchester City 4-2 at Anfield, with Jackie Sheldon netting a brace and Billy Lacey also on the scoresheet. Fred Howard struck two of his nine goals against the reds, both from the spot. Match abandoned 1893 - Our friendly with Accrington Stanley at their Crown Ground was abandoned after 75 minutes due to bad weather. We were losing 1-0 at the time. Clarets and Rams three times 1952 – We lost 2-0 at Burnley. 1926 – We were thumped 4-0 at Turf Moor with keeper Elisha Scott playing his 300th reds game. George Beel netted two of his eight goals against the reds, with Joe Devine also nabbing a brace. 1928 – We lost another trip 3-2 with Dick Edmed and Bob Clark on target. Louis Page scored one of his seven past us, with George Beel netting another brace. 1903 – We lost 2-0 at Derby County. 1900 – The Rams held us to a goalless draw in L4. 1899 – We were beaten 3-2 at the Baseball Ground, with Tommy Robertson scoring as well as seeing a penalty saved. John Hunter also struck for the reds, with Steve Bloomer netting one of his fourteen goals past us. Billy MacDonald and Fred Crump also scored for the Rams as keeper Harry Storer appeared for the reds for the 121st and final time. Other reds games 1956 – Alan A’Court bagged the only goal of Leyton Orient’s visit in a Second Division encounter. 1951 – Jimmy Payne netted as Blackpool held us to a 1-1 draw at Anfield. Billy Liddell missed a penalty, with Stan Mortensen netting one of his eleven goals against the reds. 1950 – We lost 3-0 at Blackpool. Stan Mortensen struck twice, with Jackie Mudie also on target. 1933 – Portsmouth held us to a 2-2 draw in L4 with Sam English and Alf Hanson on the scoresheet. Jack Weddle bagged one of his five goals past us, with Jimmy Nichol also scoring. 1929 – We were thumped 4-0 at Sheffield United as Jimmy Dunne netted the first of his eleven strikes against us. Fred Tunstall scored one of his eight, with Tom Phillipson adding a brace. 1924 – We won 2-1 at Notts County. Dick Forshaw struck twice, with his first being when he converted the rebound from his own spot kick. 1922 – Donald McKinlay and Dick Johnson netted as we won 2-0 at Oldham Athletic. 1920 – Dick Johnson was on target in out 1-1 draw at Chelsea. 1919 – We beat Sunderland 3-2 at Anfield. Billy Lacey and Tom Miller netted, with Donald McKinlay missing a penalty as the reds also benefited from a Bert Hobson own goal. Jackie Mordue scored from the spot, the last of his six goals against us, with Charlie Buchan netting one of his 21. 1908 – Ronald Orr struck as we drew 1-1 at Aston Villa. 1907 – Joe Hewitt was on target as Chelsea returned home 4-1 victors. George Hilsdon scored the first two of his five goals past us, with George Henderson and Jimmy Windridge also on the scoresheet. 1896 – League leaders Aston Villa held us to a 3-3 draw in L4. Frank Becton scored twice, including a penalty, with George Allan also scoring. Jimmy Cowan nabbed one of his four goals against us, with Jack Devey scoring the first of his seven and Charlie Athersmith also on target.-
