Ray Clemence was playing his 200th reds game. 1979 – We thumped Tranmere Rovers 4-0 in a League Cup Second Round second leg at Anfield after the first game ended goalless. Phil Thompson struck his thirteenth and final goal for the club in his 300th outing before Kenny Dalglish bagged a brace. David Fairclough was also on target, with all the goals coming in the second half. For Jamie 2010 – Jamie Carragher’s testimonial took place at Anfield in front of more than 35,000, with the reds beating an Everton side 4-1. Luis García opened the scoring with Carra converting a spot-kick for the reds shortly before half time. Joe Cole made the score 3-0 with his first reds strike but Jamie then scored from the spot for Everton! Nathan Eccleston also opened his account for the reds. Babb strikes 1996 - Phil Babb notched his only reds strike, the only goal of the game against his former club Coventry City at Highfield Road, in what was Roy Evans’ hundredth League game in charge. 1976 - We also faced the Sky Blues, winning 3-1 at Anfield thanks to goals from Kevin Keegan, David Johnson and John Toshack. Mick Ferguson had shocked the home side by scoring in the first minute. Happy birthdays 1891 - Forward Fred Pagnam was born in Poulton-le-Fylde, Lancashire. He signed from Blackpool in May 1914, and so could only bag thirty goals in 39 reds games before joining Arsenal in October 1919, with whom he kept up his remarkable strike-rate. 1930 – Right-half Roy Saunders was born in Salford. He signed from Hull City in May 1948 and netted once in 146 reds appearances before joining Swansea Town in March 1959 in part-exchange for forward Des Palmer, who never featured for our first team. He was the father of 1990’s reds striker Dean and died in January 2009. 1980 – Michael Beale was born in Bromley, London. He joined the Academy as an Under-15’s coach in 2003, eventually progressing to be in charge of the Under-21’s. He left for São Paulo in January 2017, returning to the reds later that year for a brief spell before joining Steven Gerrard at Rangers. 1988 - Midfielder Ryan Flynn was born in Falkirk. He was awarded with a full-time contract at Melwood in the summer of 2006 having impressed in the previous season’s victorious FA Youth Cup campaign, including notching a goal in the Final. He made a loan move to his hometown club permanent in September 2009. The Bridge opens 1905 - The reds helped Chelsea to open Stamford Bridge, taking part in the first ever game played there. Unfortunately, we started as we meant to continue at the Bridge, losing 4-0 in a friendly encounter. 1909 - We visited there again, with outside-left John McDonald and inside-right Jimmy Stewart making their reds bows as we lost 2-1 in a season opener, with Joe Hewitt nabbing our consolation. George Hilsdon’s penalty was the last of his five goals against the reds, with Jimmy Windridge also netting. An unhappy millennium 1971 - We lost 2-0 in a League game at Tottenham Hotspur in what was our 3,000th first-class fixture, with Martin Chivers nabbing one of his seven goals past us and Martin Peters scoring one of his fourteen. Off the mark 1912 - John Tosswill scored his only goal for the club on his reds debut as we beat Oldham Athletic 2-0 at Anfield, with Tom Miller also netting. Centre-half Bob Ferguson also made his debut, following his signing from Third Lanark. 1926 – Winger Dick Edmed bagged the first of his 46 reds goals as we lost 2-1 at Derby County, with Jimmy Gill bagging one of his six goals past us and Harry Bedford scoring the first of his nine. Starting off with a stalemate 1897 - We kicked off our season with a 2-2 draw against Stoke, with inside-forward Willie Walker scoring on his reds bow and Frank Becton also on the scoresheet. Forward Dan Cunliffe and right-winger Bobby Marshall also debuted as Billy Maxwell bagged the first of six goals against the reds, with Tom Hill also on target. 1933 - We also left the Victoria Ground with a share of the spoils, with Harold Taylor netting as we drew 1-1 with Stoke City, as they were known by then. Forward Jack ‘Nipper’ Roberts made his only senior reds outing in this game, while Harry Davies nabbed his fourth and final goal past us. Disappointment against the Trotters and Terriers 1911 - We lost 2-1 at Bolton Wanderers in a top-flight meeting, with Jack Parkinson grabbing our consolation and John Bovill and half-back Harry Lowe both debuting. Alf Bentley struck one of his four goals against the reds, with Harold Hilton also scoring. 1915 - We returned to Burnden Park, drawing a Wartime League fixture 1-1, with Fred Pagnam netting. We have also faced Huddersfield Town twice on this day in history. 1929 - We won a top-flight encounter 3-0 at Anfield, thanks to goals from Gordon Hodgson, James Clark and Henry Race. 1957 - We also played them in the Second Division with Tony Rowley on the scoresheet in a 2-1 defeat at Leeds Road. Stan Howard bagged a brace for the home side. In and out 1937 - Left-back Ernie Blenkinsop played his 71st and final reds game as Charlton Athletic won 2-1 at Anfield, with Jack Balmer on target and George Tadman and future reds boss Don Welsh netting for the visitors. Centre-half Tom ‘Tiny’ Bradshaw was also making his final appearance for the club, turning out for the 291st time. 1912 – Full-back Sam Speakman signed from amateur side Colne but could only play 26 first-team games without scoring before joining South Liverpool in 1920. 1901 – Inside-forward Tommy Green signed from New Brighton Tower, notching once in seven outings before joining Swindon Town in April 1903. A win at Highbury 1982 - David Hodgson’s first reds strike and a Phil Neal goal handed us a 2-0 win at Arsenal. The author was present at this game, seeing the reds win for the first time. Three against 1920 - Tommy Browell scored a hat-trick for Manchester City in their 3-2 defeat of the reds at Hyde Road, three of his seven goals past us. Harry Chambers and Walter Wadsworth netted our goals. 1935 - We also lost to City, going down 2-0 at Anfield in another top-flight match with Eric Brook bagging one of his nine goals against the reds, and Fred Tilson grabbing one of his six. 1943 - Our third meeting on this day resulted in a 2-1 Wartime League defeat at Maine Road, with Alf Hanson on target. A League Cup first 1968 - We won at home in the League Cup for the first time, at the fourth attempt, as Roger Hunt, Chris Lawler, Ian Callaghan and Peter Thompson all netted in our 4-0 defeat of Sheffield United. International reds 1999 - Several reds turned out for their countries in Euro 2000 qualifiers. Michael Owen struck in England’s 6-0 demolition of Luxembourg, his first senior England goal at Wembley, with Steve McManaman on the scoresheet twice, his first goals for his country, in his first game as a Real Madrid player. Robbie Fowler also played, under the management of ex-red Kevin Keegan. Sami Hyypiä skippered Finland for the first time as they lost 2-1 to Germany in Helsinki, with Christian Ziege winning his first cap as a Middlesbrough player, and fellow future red Markus Babbel also playing. Nicolas Anelka won his first cap as a Real Madrid player in France’s goalless draw in the Ukraine. Ex-red Øyvind Leonhardsen was on target in Norway’s 1-0 defeat of Greece in Oslo, with Vegard Heggem also in the side. Another ex-red, Don Hutchison, netted as Scotland won 2-1 in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Dean Saunders won his seventieth cap, and first while with Bradford City, grabbing his final goal for Wales in their 2-1 win in Belarus. Future reds loanee keeper Paul Jones also featured. Future reds Sporting Director Richard Hughes won his second and last cap for Scotland Under-21’s. as they won a European Championships qualifier 3-2 in Bosnia-Herzegovina, with future reds recruiter Mark Burchill scoring all three Scottish goals. Also in action that day were Patrik Berger, Steve Staunton and future reds Alex Manninger, Fernando Morientes and Bolo Zenden. 2010 - Péter Gulácsi saved a penalty for Hungary Under-21’s in their 1-0 home defeat to Wales. Future reds Joe Allen and Dejan Lovren, and ex-red Krisztián Németh also featured at this level that day. Meanwhile, future reds Kolo Touré and Andriy Voronin both played at senior level for their countries. 2020 – Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson both captained their countries in UEFA Nations League group games, with ex-reds coach Steve Clarke taking charge of Scotland as they were held 1-1 by Israel at Hampden Park. Javier Manquillo made his debut for Spain Under-21’s while on loan at Anfield in their 1-0 European Championships qualifying win in Hungary. Also in friendly action that day were Mamadou Sakho, Brad Smith and future reds Ragnar Klavan and Gini Wijnaldum. 2011 – Future red Loris Karius played for Germany Under-19’s for the only time as they drew 2-2 with the Netherlands in a friendly in Cologne. Future red Oussama Assaidi played for Morocco on the same day as they drew 0-0 in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in the Central African Republic. 2009 – Future red Gini Wijnaldum won his first cap for the Netherlands Under-21’s in their 2-0 European Championships qualifying defeat of Finland in Emmen. Future reds Mario Balotelli, Simon Mignolet and Daniel Sturridge also featured at the same level that day. Laurie at the wrong end 1946 - Centre-back Laurie Hughes scored an own goal as we lost 1-0 at home to Middlesbrough in our first home game of the first post-war season, with right-half Phil Taylor reaching a century of reds games. Management moves 2008 - Kevin Keegan resigned as Manager of Newcastle United for the second time, stating that “a manager must have the right to manage and that clubs should not impose upon any manager any player that he does not want.” 2015 - Abel Xavier was sacked as Manager of Clube Desportivo das Aves after just two months in charge. On the move again 2003 - Future red Peter Crouch joined Norwich City on loan from Aston Villa. He struck four times in fifteen games for the Canaries as they headed towards the First Division title. Meanwhile, James Milner joined Swindon Town on loan from Leeds United, netting twice in six games for the Robins. 2012 – Michael Owen signed for Stoke City, having been released by Manchester United. He could only net once in just nine senior outings before retiring at the end of the season. 2020 – SL Benfica paid a club record €24m to Unión Deportiva Almería for Uruguayan forward Darwin Núñez. He struck 48 times in 87 outings before moving to Anfield for an initial £64m in June 2022. Young international reds 1998 - Jamie Carragher netted his only goal for England Under-21’s as they beat Sweden 2-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Sundsvall. Future red Emile Heskey also played. On the same day, future red Milan Baroš won his first cap at Under-18’s level, as the Czech Republic lost 2-0 to Italy in a tournament in Yugoslavia. Meanwhile, future red Alex Manninger was in action for Austria Under-21’s. 2001 - Future red Djibril Cissé scored his first Under-21's goal as France beat Spain 3-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Brest, while winning his second cap. Unfortunately, he also damaged his ankle ligaments in this game. Meanwhile, future red Christian Poulsen appeared at the same level as Denmark lost a qualifier 3-1 in Bulgaria, with Stephen Wright and future red Jermaine Pennant playing for England Under-21’s in their 5-0 trouncing of Albania in Middlesbrough. Other reds games 1984 – Phil Neal converted a penalty as we won 2-1 at Luton Town, with Kenny Dalglish also on target. 1965 – We won 3-2 at Blackpool with Ray Charnley netting one of his seven goals against the reds. Jimmy Robson scored the other goal for the Seasiders. 1954 – West Ham United won a Second Division fixture 2-1 in L4, with Jimmy Payne bagging our consolation. 1948 – We drew 0-0 at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Death of a guest 1952 - Frank O’Donnell died, aged just 41. He struck once in two wartime appearances for the reds. He gained six Scotland caps as well as scoring for Preston North End in every round of the FA Cup in 1937, including the Final. Also in international action 1974 – John Toshack played for Wales in their 2-1 defeat by Austria in a European Championships qualifier in Vienna. 1985 – Future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel played for Brazil Under-20’s as they beat Nigeria 2-0 in their World Cup Semi-final in Leningrad. 1996 – Future reds Markus Babbel and Christian Ziege both appeared for Germany in their 2-0 friendly win in Poland. 2005 – Ex-red Rigobert Song faced future red Kolo Touré as Ivory Coast lost 3-2 to Cameroon in a World Cup qualifier in Abidjan. -
Strikers on the move 1961 - Ian St. John signed from Motherwell for a club record £37,500. He went on to bag 118 goals in 425 reds games, helping us to two League titles, our first ever FA Cup, Second Division championship and FA Charity Shield before joining South African side Hellenic in February 1971. 1897 – Scottish inside-forward Willie Walker arrived from Leith Athletic. He struck three times in twelve reds games, returning to his former club for free in August 1898 1938 – Bill Kinghorn joined the reds from Queen’s Park. He netted four times in nineteen reds games, and another three times in eleven wartime matches. 1979 - Future red John Aldridge signed for Newport County from South Liverpool for £3,500. He netted 83 times in 198 games for County. Cally honoured 1974 - Ian Callaghan was named as the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year, surprisingly becoming the first red ever to win this honour since its launch in 1948. 2008 - Fernando Torres was voted runner-up in the same awards, with ex-red David James in third. Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo was the winner. Happy birthdays 1981 - Chris Kirkland was born in Leicester. He only appeared 45 times between our sticks after signing from Coventry City for £6m in August 2001, while suffering from a succession of injuries, and moved to Wigan Athletic in October 2006 for a reported £3.5m after a successful loan spell. 1904 - Outside-right Cyril Oxley was born in Worksop. He signed from Chesterfield for £2,000 in October 1925 and bagged six goals in 34 games before moving to Southend United in September 1928. 1997 – Midfielder Matty Virtue was born in Epsom. He was Under-23’s skipper, moving on to Blackpool in January 2019. Red farewells 2018 – Ragnar Klavan featured in his 53rd and last reds game as we lost the second leg of our UEFA Champions League Semi-final 4-2 at Roma, our first defeat in the competition that season, to progress 7-6 on aggregate. Sadio Mané and Gini Wijnaldum both scored inside the first half hour, either side of an unfortunate James Milner own goal. Edin Džeko gave the home side hope with the latest of his five goals past us before Radja Nainggolan added two late strikes, including a stoppage-time penalty. 2010 – Yossi Benayoun played his 134th and final reds game prior to joining the visitors as we meekly surrendered 2-0 to Chelsea at Anfield, thus helping to ensure they won the League title ahead of Manchester United and that we could not qualify for the following season’s Champions League. Didier Drogba pounced on a stray Steven Gerrard back-pass to open the scoring with one of his eleven goals past us, with Frank Lampard also on target with last of his eight. Daniel Ayala also made his final senior appearance, his fifth. 2004 - Danny Murphy scored his 44th and last reds goal, converting a spot-kick in a 2-0 defeat of Middlesbrough at Anfield, to continue his hundred per cent record at penalties for us, with his eighth successful conversion. Emile Heskey grabbed the other goal. 1956 – Don Welsh took charge of the reds for the last time as we lost our final game of the season 2-0 at Lincoln City to finish the season in third in the Second Division. 1925 – Full-back Ted Parry made his thirteenth and final reds appearance as we drew 1-1 at League champions Huddersfield Town, benefiting from a Tommy Wilson own goal as we finished the season in fourth. Five against the Hammers 1998 - We thumped West Ham United 5-0 at home in the Premiership. Michael Owen, Jason McAteer, with a brace that included his final reds goal, and Øyvind Leonhardsen all scored before the break, with ex-Hammer Paul Ince wrapping up the scoring in the second half to ensure our place in the UEFA Cup for the next season. 1931 - We also played the Hammers as Gordon Hodgson struck twice in our final game of the season to hand us a 2-0 win at Anfield, as we finished ninth in the top flight. This was the sixth consecutive game in which he had netted. The worst season ever 1955 - We finished the season with a 6-1 thumping at Rotherham United, ending up in our worst ever final League position, eleventh in the Second Division. The great Billy Liddell bagged our consolation with Ian Wilson netting four goals, with Jack Grainger and Dennis Pell also on target for the Millers. Champions! 1988 - We were presented with the League Championship trophy, along with the new Barclays trophy, before our 1-1 Bank Holiday Monday home draw with Southampton. John Aldridge put us in front just before half-time, with Rod Wallace equalising with the first of his five strikes against the reds. Also recently 2015 - Philippe Coutinho gave us a first-half lead over Queens Park Rangers before Leroy Fer equalised after the break. Nedum Onuoha was sent off for the visitors and Steven Gerrard had a penalty saved by Robert Green, although he went on to head in a late goal as we won 2-1 with Lazar Marković making his 34th and last reds appearance. 2021 – Our League visit to Manchester United, due to be played behind closed doors due to COVID restrictions, was called off before kick-off due to protests by the home fans against their owners. Colin for the only time 1981 - Forward Colin Russell played his only reds game as Sunderland won 1-0 at Anfield, thanks to a Stan Cummins goal. Future Bolton Wanderers boss Sam Allardyce played his final game for the visitors. A Tiny mistake 1936 - We lost 2-1 in our final game of the season as we finished nineteenth with Stoke City securing their joint highest ever League placing, ending up fourth in the top flight. Fred Howe netted for the reds with centre-half Tom ‘Tiny’ Bradshaw putting through his own net and Jim Westland also on target for the home side. This was George Patterson’s last game in his second spell in charge of the reds. Injured 1992 – John Barnes had to limp off during our goalless draw at Sheffield Wednesday with an injury that ruled him out of the FA Cup Final the following weekend. Danny stays 2009 – Centre-half Daniel Agger agreed a new contract until 2014, later further extended. He struck fourteen times in 232 reds games since signing from Brøndby IF for £5.8m in January 2006, before returning there for a reported £3m in August 2014. Reds against reds 1984 - Alan Kennedy and Sammy Lee faced Ian Rush in a British International Championships game at the Racecourse Ground. It was Barney’s second and final cap. Future red Mark Wright made his England debut, while his future clubmate Paul Walsh won his fifth and last cap. Ex-red Joey Jones also played as the home side won 1-0 thanks to a Mark Hughes goal. Future red Glenn Hysén and ex-red Dave Watson both also featured in internationals that day. First and last caps 1979 - John Toshack won his first cap as a Swansea City player, and 35th overall, in Wrexham, coming on as a substitute in their 2-0 defeat by West Germany in a European Championships qualifier. Fellow ex-red Joey Jones also played. 1989 – Øyvind Leonhardsen debuted for Norway Under-21’s as they lost 2-1 to Poland, with fellow future red Stig Inge Bjørnebye also in action. 2004 - David Raven won his sixth and last cap for England Under-19's as they drew a European Championships qualifier with Ukraine 1-1 in Slovenia. Ins and out 2011 – Sami Hyypiä announced his retirement from playing, having bagged three goals in 61 outings for Bayer 04 Leverkusen after leaving Anfield two years earlier. On the same day, it was announced that Club Secretary Ian Silvester was to leave by mutual consent, having been in that role for two years. 1980 – Defender Richard Money arrived from Fulham for a £50,000 fee. However, he was unable to displace either Alan Kennedy or Phil Neal at full-back, making only seventeen first-team appearances before joining Luton Town in April 1982. 1908 – Scottish keeper Don Sloan signed from Everton for £300, failing to keep a clean sheet in six reds games before becoming Player/Manager of his old club Distillery in Belfast in July 1909. 1896 – Scottish centre-half Robert Neill signed on loan from Hibernian, having joined on loan in April 1895. At five feet four inches he is probably our shortest ever central defender, scoring three times in 27 games. He left to join Rangers in April 1897. More disappointments on this day 1995 – We shared a goalless draw with Wimbledon at Selhurst Park. 1987 – We lost 1-0 at Coventry City, with Nick Pickering scoring shortly after the break. 1983 – Peter Davenport bagged the only goal of our trip to Nottingham Forest as we fell to our fourth consecutive defeat, with the League title already in the bag. 1963 – Ian St. John scored as we lost 2-1 at Leyton Orient, although the O’s were still relegated after just one season in the top flight. 1921 – We shared a goalless draw with Arsenal at Highbury. Also in international action 1956 – Future reds keeper Tommy Younger played for Scotland in their 1-1 friendly draw with Austria at Hampden Park. 1962 – Ian St. John featured as Scotland lost 3-2 to Uruguay at the same venue. 1978 – Future reds coach Joe Corrigan played for England Under-21’s as they drew the second leg of their European Championships Semi-final 1-1 with Yugoslavia at Maine Road, losing out 3-2 on aggregate. 2002 – Carl Medjani captained France Under-17’s as they lost 2-1 to fellow future red Arnaud Bühler’s Switzerland in a European Championships Finals group game in Denmark. 2006 – Jerzy Dudek played for Poland as they lost a friendly 1-0 to Lithuania in Bełchatów. 2007 – Future reds Victor Moses and Mamadou Sakho both played in European Championships Finals group games in Belgium. 2019 – Luke Chambers and Isaac Mabaya played for England Under-15’s as they lost a penalty shoot-out after their friendly meeting with the USA ended 1-1. -
Birth of a reds great 1919 - Bob Paisley was born in Hetton-le-Hole in County Durham. He made 277 reds appearances, netting twelve times and helping us to the League title in 1947 before joining the coaching staff in 1954. He took over as Manager twenty years later and remains the most successful English boss of all time, leading us to three European Cups, six League titles, the UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, four League Cups and five FA Charity Shields. Happy birthdays 1986 – Spanish left-back José Enrique was born in Valencia. He signed from Newcastle United for £5.5m in August 2011, notching twice in 99 reds appearances before being released in May 2016. He moved on to Real Zaragoza four months later. 1983 – Pepijn Lijnders was born in Broekhuizen in the Netherlands. He joined the reds as First-team Development Coach in 2014, leaving the club in January 2018 to take over as N.E.C. boss. However, he was sacked just four months later, returning to Melwood in June 2018 as Assistant Manager until he left along with Jürgen Klopp in the summer of 2024. 1883 – Keeper Peter Platt was born in Rishton. He signed from Blackburn Rovers in May 1902, playing 44 times before moving on to Luton Town in 1904. He sadly died aged just 39 in a mini-flu epidemic in Nuneaton in January 1922. Four for Harold 1932 - Centre-forward Harold Barton scored all four reds goals as we beat Chesterfield 4-2 at their Recreation Ground in a Fourth Round FA Cup tie. Unfortunately, we were knocked out by Chelsea in the Sixth Round that season. Beating the Blues 1937 - We won the Anfield derby 3-2 with Fred Howe, Phil Taylor and Jack Balmer on target, and Alex Stevenson bagging a brace for the Blues. Most recently 2022 – We won 3-1 at Crystal Palace with Virgil van Dijk and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on target before the break, with Fabinho converting a late spot kick. 2020 – We won 2-1 at Wolverhampton Wanderers, extending our lead at the top of the table to sixteen points with a game in hand. Jordan Henderson headed us in front early on, but Raúl Jiménez equalised after the break as we conceded our first League goal for more than twelve hours. Roberto Firmino struck the winner. Cup wins We have twice won FA Cup Fourth Round ties 3-0 on this day in history. 1971 - John Toshack, Ian St. John and Chris Lawler netted as we beat Swansea City at Anfield on our way to the Final. This was the Saint’s 425th and final game for the club. 1982 - We won at Sunderland with Kenny Dalglish grabbing a brace and Ian Rush also on the scoresheet. Unfortunately, we lost at Chelsea at the very next hurdle. Tons up 1954 – Centre-half Laurie Hughes played his 200th reds game as Tottenham Hotspur held us to a 2-2 top-flight draw at Anfield. Billy Liddell and John Evans scored with full-back Frank Lock putting through his own net and Sonny Walters nabbing the last of his four strikes past us. 1915 – We lost 2-1 to The Wednesday at Hillsborough with left-back Bob Pursell reaching a century of reds games. Fred Pagnam scored our goal, while David McLean struck one of his eight goals past us with Sam Kirkman bagging the last of his four. A crazy win 2016 – We won by the odd goal in nine at Norwich City, thanks to a stoppage-time Adam Lallana winner that led to a mass celebration on the touchline with boss Jürgen Klopp having his glasses broken. Roberto Firmino put us in front, but we found ourselves 3-1 down. We completed a turnaround to lead 4-3 thanks to goals from Jordan Henderson, a second from Firmino and James Milner. We were still ahead at the ninety-minute mark but Sébastien Bassong bagged a late leveller before the final dénouement. Off the mark 1904 – Forward John Carlin struck the first of his eight reds goals as we drew 2-2 at West Bromwich Albion, with half-back John ‘Geezer’ Hughes also on target with his second and last strike for the club. Carra going free 2006 - Jamie Carragher was awarded the Freedom of Sefton, an honour that thrilled the Bootle-born defender, which he won for his local charity work and the good example he sets young people. He became only the second person to be handed such an accolade. Other births and deaths 2013 – Right-winger Jimmy Payne died. He notched 43 times in 243 appearances for the reds, including the 1950 FA Cup Final, before moving across Stanley Park in April 1956, where he was dogged by injury before retiring to become a newsagent. 1911 – Inside-right Jock Smith committed suicide two days after the death of one of his children. He signed from Sunderland in May 1892, bagging five goals in eleven outings, moving on to The Wednesday in August 1893. 1907 – Scottish inside-forward Willie Walker died in the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. He joined the reds from Leith Athletic in May 1897, netting three times in twelve reds games before he returned to his former club for free in August 1898. 1868 – Forward Fred Geary was born in Hyson Green, Nottingham. He signed from Everton for £60 in May 1895, having top scored as they won the League in 1891 and won three England caps. He bagged fourteen goals in 45 reds games, helping us to claim the Second Division title in his first season. 1904 - Left-half Jimmy McDougall was born in Port Glasgow. He signed from Partick Thistle in April 1928 and went on to be nominated into the club’s official Hall of Fame for the 1930’s, having struck twelve times in 356 games for the reds. He moved on to South Liverpool in May 1938 and later set up a successful chandlery business in Liverpool. 1961 – Former Academy Technical Manager Pep Segura was born in A Coruña, Spain. He joined the reds in June 2009 having led Olympiacos to the League and Cup double, moving on in September 2012. 1974 - One-time winger Bernard Diomède was born in Saint-Doulchard, France. He only made five first-team appearances after signing from Auxerre for £3m in June 2000. Stéph’s debut 1993 - Future red Stéphane Henchoz made his full international debut as Roy Hodgson’s Switzerland drew 1-1 with Japan B in a Carlsberg Cup game in Hong Kong, going on to win 5-3 in a penalty shoot-out. Bad boys 2006 - Abel Xavier was sacked by Middlesbrough after being found guilty of breaching UEFA’s anti-doping regulations. He served a ban and subsequently returned to the Riverside, playing 27 times for Boro in total. 2005 – Future red Daniel Agger was sent off for Denmark Under-21’s in an unofficial international against a Panama ‘A’ side, with the game ending 2-2. Four for Milan again 2003 - Milan Baroš scored four for the reserves as they trounced Bradford City 5-0 at the Deva Stadium in Chester. This was the second time that he had knocked four past the Bantams, following a similar performance the previous August. Dietmar Hamann made his comeback from injury in the same game. On the move 2021 – Midfielder Kevin Stewart signed for Blackpool, playing sixteen times in his first campaign with the Tangerines. 2020 – Victor Moses joined Internazionale on loan from Chelsea, failing to score in twenty games in Italy. 2019 – Ex-reds forward Mario Balotelli signed for Olympique de Marseille, scoring eight times in fifteen games for the French side. Club record signing 2018 – Dutch centre-half Virgil van Dijk signed from Southampton for a club record £75m. He struck 23 times in 270 reds games across his first seven seasons, helping us to keep 108 clean sheets while claiming the Premier League title, UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, two League Cups and FA Community Shield. On the same day, Estonian centre-half Ragnar Klavan headed in his second and last goal for the club to secure a last-minute 2-1 victory at Burnley. Sadio Mané opened the scoring after an hour before Jóhann Berg Guðmundsson equalised late on. 2020 – Japanese forward Takumi Minamino signed from Red Bull Salzburg for £7.25m. He went on to score fourteen goals in 55 outings, helping us to claim the Premier League title before moving on to AS Monaco for an initial €15m in June 2022. 2024 – Minamino played as Japan thrashed Thailand 5-0 in a friendly in Tokyo. RIP Gary 2012 - Gary Ablett died, aged just 46. He signed on at Anfield as a professional in November 1983, going on to make 147 reds appearances, scoring just once – in only his second game. He helped us to two League titles, FA Cup and FA Charity Shield before being sold to Everton by Graeme Souness for £750,000 in January 1992, with whom he won a second FA Cup. He returned to the club in the summer of 2006 to take over as Reserve Team Manager, leading them to the national title in his second season, although he left at the end of the following campaign. 1992 - Ablett played his 147th and final reds game as goals from Ray Houghton and Dean Saunders resulted in a 2-1 League defeat of Sheffield United at Anfield, after Brian Deane had struck one of his eight goals against the reds. 1977 – Right-back Jimmy ‘Parson’ Jackson died. He struck twice in 224 games for the reds after signing from Aberdeen for £1,750 in May 1925, appearing in every outfield position, and was renowned for his on-field arguments with notoriously foul-mouthed keeper Elisha Scott! He became reds skipper in 1928, also writing a regular column for the Liverpool Weekly Post before leaving the reds in 1933 to become ordained as a Presbyterian minister. 1917 – Scottish ex-reds keeper Don Sloan died in First World War action. He signed from Everton for £300 in May 1908, failing to keep a clean sheet in six reds games before becoming Player/Manager of his old club Distillery in Belfast in July 1909. Rushie’s hat-trick 1983 - Ian Rush bagged a treble as we beat Notts County 5-1 at Anfield, with his second being his fiftieth reds strike. Kenny Dalglish netted a brace as Phil Neal missed a penalty. John Fashanu struck the first of his six goals past us. 1994 - Rushie was on target as we won 2-1 at Ipswich Town, completing his record of scoring for us in each of the six New Year’s Day matches in which he played. Neil Ruddock nabbed the other goal to complete our first away League win since August. Most recently 2024 - Mohamed Salah scored his 150th League goal for the reds after a goalless first half against Newcastle United at Anfield, having had a first-half spot-kick saved. Alexander Isak levelled, but Curtis Jones and Cody Gakpo netted before Sven Botman headed a goal back. However, Salah converted another penalty to complete a 4-2 victory late on to maintain our lead at the top of the table. Happy birthdays 1993 - Right-back Jon Flanagan was born in Liverpool. He struck once in 51 senior reds games since making his debut in a 3-0 home victory over Manchester City in April 2011. He joined Rangers in June 2018 after being released by the reds earlier that month. 1955 – Chief Executive Officer Peter Moore was born in Liverpool, taking on the role in June 2017, moving on in August 2020. 1984 – Head of Nutrition Mona Nemmer was born. She joined from Bayern München in July 2016, having worked there for three years after a four-year spell with Germany Under-21’s. 2001 – Left-back Yasser Larouci was born in El Oued in Algeria. He arrived from Le Havre in July 2017 as a winger, playing two senior reds games before joining Troyes in July 2021. On the same day, midfielder Elijah Dixon-Bonner was born in Harlow. He debuted in our FA Cup Fourth Round replay against Shrewsbury Town in February 2020, so far making just two senior appearances. On the same day, Glenn Hysén played for Sweden Under-18’s in their 2-1 friendly defeat by Romania in Israel. 1910 - Jack Parkinson scored three, including a penalty, as we thumped Woolwich Arsenal 5-1 at Anfield, with Sam Bowyer adding a brace. David Neave netted the last of his four goals past us. 1894 - We also beat the Gunners at home in our first ever New Year’s Day fixture, with Jim McBride scoring hist first reds goal and Malcolm McVean also netting in our 2-0 win. 1940 - Berry Nieuwenhuys scored a hat-trick as we thumped Crewe Alexandra 7-3 in a Wartime League game at Anfield. Billy Liddell struck in his first competitive game for the reds with G. Leadbetter, Matt Busby and Len Carney also on target that day. 1917 - Thomas Bennett bagged a treble as we beat Leeds City 4-0 in a testimonial for Mrs. Cameron at Elland Road, with Harry Lewis grabbing the other goal. Debuting between the sticks 1913 - Elisha Scott became our youngest ever goalkeeper at just eighteen years 131 days, keeping a clean sheet as we emerged from Newcastle United with honours even. 1896 - Harry Storer made his reds bow as we beat Manchester City 3-1 at Anfield. Jimmy Ross bagged a brace, with Malcolm McVean also on target. Luis up to a score scores 2014 - Luis Suárez became the quickest player ever to reach twenty Premier League goals in a season, taking just fifteen games to do so as he converted a second-half free-kick. We beat Hull City 2-0 at Anfield with Daniel Agger heading in from a corner before the break. Other debuts 1927 - Right-back Bob Done and left-winger George Pither both debuted as we lost 2-1 at Bolton Wanderers, with Dick Edmed nabbing our consolation and Fred Baron playing his twentieth and final reds game. Twice against the Foxes 2015 – Steven Gerrard converted two first-half penalties, with the first wrongly awarded and the second being the reds’ hundredth successful conversion in the Premier League, as we became the first club to reach this milestone. However, David Nugent and Jeff Schlupp both struck after the break as the game ended 2-2 with Leicester City at Anfield. 1974 – We were held to a 1-1 home draw by the Foxes. Peter Cormack struck with Keith Weller nabbing one of his six goals past us, while Kevin Keegan reached a century of League games for the reds. Up against the Trotters 2011 – We secured a last-minute 2-1 victory over Bolton Wanderers in front of 35,400, the lowest League attendance at Anfield since Portsmouth visited on a Tuesday evening in December 2004. Kevin Davies headed the visitors in front with the last of his four goals against us, but Fernando Torres equalised early in the second half, with Joe Cole grabbing a dramatic late winner. 2007 - We won 3-0 at Anfield, thanks to a fantastic scissor-kick volley from Peter Crouch and strikes from Steven Gerrard and Dirk Kuyt, with all the goals coming in the second half. Dirk’s goal was our 900th in the Premier League. We have faced Bolton on three more occasions on this day in history. 1897 – We won 4-1 at Burnden Park with George Allan bagging a brace and John McCartney and Fred Geary also on target. 1907 - We lost 3-0 at Burnden Park. 2002 - We were held to a draw at Anfield with scouser Kevin Nolan cancelling out Steven Gerrard’s opener, which was our 150th goal in League encounters with Bolton. Up against the Blues We have entertained Chelsea three times on this day in history. 2005 - They completed their second League double over the reds, and first since 1919, when another deflected Joe Cole goal handed them victory at Anfield. 1924 - Danny Shone, Jimmy Walsh and Joe Keetley struck as we won 3-1. This was Keetley’s second and final reds goal. 1938 - John Shafto and Willie Fagan netted as we drew 2-2. Harry Burgess struck one of his nine goals against the reds, with Wilf Chitty also scoring. 1997 - We also visited Stamford Bridge, with Roberto Di Matteo grabbing the only goal of the game. In white 1906 - We beat Stoke 3-1 at Anfield, having to start the match with just ten men as left-back Billy Dunlop arrived late. The team played in white as the visitors had turned up in red jerseys. Not a ‘sir’ just yet 2000 - ‘Sir’ Roger Hunt was finally awarded an MBE for his services in the 1966 World Cup, one of the final five World Cup winners to receive this honour. 1983 - Ex-reds centre-forward John Toshack received the same honour. 1975 – Reds legend Ian Callaghan was also awarded an MBE. Double treble trouble 1934 - Jimmy Richardson and Sam Weaver both scored hat-tricks for Newcastle United as they thumped us 9-2 at St. James’ Park. The score was 2-2 at half-time, with Harold Taylor netting for the reds, to add to an Alec Betton own goal. Tommy Lang struck the last of his four goals past us, with Jimmy Boyd and Ron Williams also scoring for the home side. 2003 - A Laurent Robert free-kick deflected off Milan Baroš past Chris Kirkland as the Geordies won 1-0 on a sodden pitch. Salif Diao was sent off shortly after an hour for a wild challenge, while Grégory Vignal made his twentieth and final reds appearance as a late substitute. A rare defeat 1972 - Leeds United beat us 2-0, one of just eleven home League defeats we suffered during the whole of the 1970’s. Allan Clarke and Mick Jones each bagged one of their seven strikes past us. Other birthdays 1955 - Assistant Chief Scout Mike McGlynn was born in Liverpool. He was a senior coach with the FA for 20 years before becoming northern scout for West Ham United. He was initially in a part-time role for the reds before joining full time in 2007. 1881 – Welsh international half-back George Latham was born in Newtown. He joined the reds as an amateur in December 1902, signing on professionally the following year. He played nineteen reds games without scoring before joining Southport Central in 1909. Mølby foiled 1986 - Ian Rush ended a barren spell of eight games without a goal to draw us level at Sheffield Wednesday, before Martin Hodge saved a Jan Mølby spot-kick. Paul Walsh scored with his first touch from off the bench, but we were eventually held 2-2. Beating the Blues We have twice won wartime derby matches on this day in history. 1918 - Forward Thomas Bennett scored in his third consecutive game as we won 4-1 at Anfield, with Harry Lewis netting a brace and Jack Waine also on target. 1919 - We won 2-1 at Goodison Park thanks to goals from Harry Lewis and Arthur Metcalf. In and out 1949 – Half-back Jack Heydon signed on a free transfer from Everton, playing 67 times before moving to Millwall in May 1953. 2006 - John Welsh signed for Hull City in a swap deal for winger Paul Anderson. Welsh had played ten senior games for the reds, while Anderson made it onto the first-team bench just twice, both in Champions League matches. He signed for League One Nottingham Forest in June 2009, having spent the previous campaign on loan with them. 2011 – Reserves keeper Charles Itandje officially signed for Greek Super League side P.A.E. A.P.S. Atromitos Athens after dramatically falling out of favour at Anfield. 2013 – Ex-reserves forward Jon Newby was sacked as Manager of Colwyn Bay, having been in charge since November 2011. 2014 - Djibril Cissé signed for Bastia, scoring twice in eleven outings during the rest of his first campaign in Corsica. 2015 – Forward Jack Dunn, centre-half Lloyd Jones and midfielder Kevin Stewart all joined Cheltenham Town on loan, making a total of fifteen appearances between them. Red farewells 2008 - Club Secretary Sheila Walsh died of cancer. Those who paid tribute to her included boss Rafael Benítez, who said, “Sheila worked as a Secretary to seven different managers at Liverpool Football Club during her 26 years with us. I was privileged to work with her during these last four years. During my time as the manager here I found Sheila to be professional, committed, warm, friendly and above all courageous in the face of her suffering.” 2023 – Scottish forward Frank McGarvey died from cancer. He arrived from Celtic for £300,000 in May 1979 after bagging 113 goals in 245 League games for the Hoops. However, he never broke into the first team at Anfield, moving back to Celtic for £270,000 in March 1980, becoming Scotland’s most expensive footballer. 1901 – Romany right-half Rab Howell played his 67th and last reds game in our 3-1 home victory over Stoke. Terry Mac signs on 1974 – Terry McDermott signed from Newcastle United for £175,000. He struck 81 times in 329 reds games, helping us to three European Cups, four League titles, two League Cups, UEFA Super Cup and two FA Charity Shields. In 1980 he became the first player to win both the PFA and Football Writers’ Player Of The Year Awards in the same season. He returned to St. James’ Park in September 1982. Red trebles 2004 - Milan Baroš grabbed his only reds treble, including two penalties, as we beat Crystal Palace 3-2 at Anfield. This remains our only hat-trick against the Eagles to date. 1982 - Ian Rush scored a hat-trick as we beat Coventry City 4-0 in a League match at Anfield. Kenny Dalglish netted the other goal, while Bruce Grobbelaar conceded a penalty but saved the resultant spot-kick taken by Mark Hateley. On the same day, future red Glenn Hysén played as Sweden won a European Championships qualifier 1-0 in Cyprus. Goals galore 1996 - We beat Charlton Athletic 4-1 in a League Cup Third Round replay, with goals from Mark Wright, Jamie Redknapp and a Robbie Fowler brace. 1965 - Northampton Town headed home on the wrong end of a 5-0 scoreline. Our cause was not helped when Larry Lloyd limped off with a serious knee injury in the first half that kept him out for two months. Referee Clive Thomas awarded an amazing 55 free-kicks in a niggly game. This was Bill Shankly’s 500th League game in charge. Dan the man 2006 - Daniel Agger was named Danish Young Player of the Year. He had turned out just sixteen times for the reds by this stage, having arrived from Brøndby IF for £5.8m that January. Seven for Cyril 1943 - Cyril Done scored an amazing seven goals as we trounced Chester 9-0 in a Wartime League fixture at Anfield. Stan Palk and Andy Beattie struck the others. Ins and out 1936 – Centre-half Norman Low left the reds for Newport County. He only played thirteen times since arriving at Anfield in October 1933, deputising for Tom Bradshaw. 2023 – Midfielder Ben Trueman signed pro terms with the reds, having joined the Academy at the age of five. 1965 - Doug Livermore signed pro terms after starting out with Bolton Wanderers, making just eighteen appearances in our midfield before joining Norwich City in November 1970, but he returned to Anfield as Roy Evans’ Assistant in 1994. He left in November 1998 following Gérard Houllier taking full control. Lucas off 2010 - Lucas Leiva was sent off in stoppage time of our 2-0 League defeat at Stoke City. Ricardo Fuller put the home side ahead after the break with Kenwyne Jones doubling their lead in the final minute, the first of his three goals past us. Final walk in the park 1920 - We faced Bradford Park Avenue for the sixth and final time when Dick Forshaw struck a brace in a 3-1 win, with Harry Chambers grabbing our first goal. Terence Miles scored as England Under-18’s won a shoot-out after their meeting with Belgium in Spain ended goalless. Ex-red Luis Suárez scored in his fourth consecutive game, converting a penalty as Uruguay won a World Cup qualifier 3-0 in Colombia, with Darwin Núñez nabbing his only goal as a SL Benfica player and future red Luis Díaz on the losing side. He moved on to Panathinaikos in July 2005, after three goals in 118 reds games, and helping us to claim two League Cups, UEFA Super Cup and FA Charity Shield, as well as playing a crucial role on the road to Istanbul. He signed from Home Farm for £35,000 in September 1979 and played 493 times in his fifteen years with the reds, netting 73 times and winning six League titles, one European Cup, two FA Cups, three League Cups and three FA Charity Shields before joining Southend United for free in September 1994. 1920 - Right-back Bill Shepherd was born in Liverpool. He signed from Elm Park in December 1945 and made 58 reds appearances, with his brothers centre-forward Arthur and Joe Shepherd also appearing for the reds after the war. Bill left Anfield in 1952 to join Wigan Athletic. 1930 – Right-back Bert Childs was born in Liverpool. He only made two senior appearances in September 1953 after arriving from amateur side Northern Nomads earlier that year. He left the club in 1954 to return to amateur football with Bishop Auckland. Youngest ever 2019 – We won 2-0 at Milton Keynes Dons in the Carabao Cup Third Round, with Harvey Elliott hitting the bar twice as he became the youngest player to ever start a reds match, at just sixteen years and 174 days. James Milner opened the scoring in the first half, with defender Ki-Jana Hoever bagging his only reds goal after the break. Forward Rhian Brewster, midfielder Herbie Kane, keeper Caoimhín Kelleher and centre-half Sepp van den Berg all made their reds bows in front of a record attendance of 28,521 for a football match at Stadium MK. 2018 – Elliott made his debut for Fulham, becoming their youngest ever player, and youngest ever in the EFL Cup, at the age of fifteen years and 174 days, as they won 3-1 at Millwall. Facing the Black Cats 2010 - We drew 2-2 with Sunderland at Anfield, with Dirk Kuyt opening the scoring after the referee ruled that the visitors had taken a free-kick when gifting the ball to the reds, despite vehement protests. Ozan Kabak appeared for the first time for Türkiye as a TSG 1899 Hoffenheim player in their 2-1 defeat in the Faroe Islands, whole ex-red Dejan Lovren netted for Croatia as they won a UEFA Nations League group game 3-1 in Austria. Also in international action were Ben Doak, Luis Díaz, future red Cody Gakpo and ex-red Neco Williams, with Bernard Diomède taking charge of France Under-18’s. 1957 – Future reds centre-forward Des Palmer bagged a hat-trick, the only goals in his three-game senior career for Wales as they thumped East Germany 4-1 in a World Cup qualifier at Ninian Park. On the same day, Alan A’Court scored his first Under-23’s goal as England beat Bulgaria 6-2 in a friendly at Stamford Bridge. 1943 - Future reds boss Don Welsh bagged a treble in a Wartime international, as England thrashed Wales 8-3 at Wembley. Ray Lambert and ex-red Cyril Sidlow both featured for the Welsh. Also in international action 1985 – Glenn Hysén played for Sweden as they drew a World Cup qualifier 2-2 with West Germany in Solna. On the same day, Jan Mølby appeared as Denmark lost a qualifier 1-0 to the USSR in Moscow. 1988 – Future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel played as Brazil beat Argentina 1-0 in their Olympics Quarter-final in South Korea. 1991 – Øyvind Leonhardsen turned out for Norway as they lost a friendly 3-2 to Czechoslovakia in Oslo. Meanwhile, fellow future red István Kozma played as Hungary drew a European Championships qualifier 2-2 in the USSR. 2003 - Future red Daniel Agger played for Denmark Under-20’s in their goalless draw with Ukraine in Kyiv. 2006 - Michael Collins, Laurence Gaughan and Shane O'Connor all appeared for the Irish Under-17’s as they won a European Championships qualifier 2-0 in Azerbaijan. 2013 – Harry Wilson featured as Wales Under-17’s held Scotland to a goalless draw in a European Championships qualifier in Slovakia. 2016 – Future red Ozan Kabak played as Turkey Under-17’s beat Ukraine 1-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Lithuania. -
Happy birthdays 1958 - John Aldridge was born in Liverpool. He signed from Oxford United for £750,000 in January 1987 and struck 63 times in 104 reds appearances, including one in the 1989 FA Cup Final. He also won a League title and FA Charity Shield in his time at Anfield, before moving on to Real Sociedad for £1.1m in September 1989. 1987 – French left-back Aly Cissokho was born in Blois. He arrived on loan from Valencia in August 2013 for a season, making nineteen appearances. 1917 - Phil Taylor was born in Bristol. He signed from Bristol Rovers in March 1936 in exchange for outside-right Billy Hartill plus £5,000. He made 345 appearances at right-half before and after the war, scoring 34 times and winning one League title and captaining the side. He joined the coaching staff when he retired from playing in July 1954, and became Manager in May 1956, staying in the job for three years, but has the unhappy distinction of being the only reds boss never to manage the side in the top flight. A derby record 1948 - The record attendance at a Merseyside derby was set as 78,299 witnessed a 1-1 draw. Willie Fagan grabbed our goal before Jock Dodds converted a penalty for the Blues after a Bill Shepherd handball, the first spot-kick they had ever been awarded in a derby. This remains the biggest crowd for any League match at Goodison. Four for Deano 1991 - Dean Saunders scored four goals in our 6-1 thumping of Finnish side Kuusysi Lahti in the opening game of our UEFA Cup campaign. Ray Houghton scored the other two in our first game back in Europe after the ban following the Heysel disaster. Nine in a row 2021 - Sadio Mané scored in his ninth consecutive game against Crystal Palace, a Premier League record, which was also his hundredth reds goal. We won 3-0 at Anfield as Jordan Henderson captained the side for the 200th time, while Virgil van Dijk reached a century of League outings for us. Centre-half Ibrahima Konaté made his reds bow as Mohamed Salah and Naby Keïta also struck. Signing on 2020 – Midfielder Thiago Alcântara signed from Bayern München for an initial £20m. He scored three goals in 98 reds appearances, helping us claim the League Cup and FA Community Shield, before retiring in the summer of 2024. 1929 – Scottish centre-forward Jimmy Smith signed from Ayr United for £5,500. He still holds the British seasonal scoring record, having bagged 66 for Ayr in 1927/28. He struck 38 goals in 62 reds games including two on his debut against Manchester United. He moved into amateur football with Tunbridge Wells Rangers in June 1932. Red trebles 1909 - Jack Parkinson bagged a hat-trick as we won 4-1 at Nottingham Forest, with ‘Wee’ Ronald Orr also on the scoresheet and Enoch West grabbing one of his eight goals against the reds. 1954 - Billy Liddell scored three times, including two penalties, in our 4-1 Second Division defeat of Fulham at Anfield. John Evans netted the other, with future England boss Bobby Robson on target for the visitors. Liddell’s goal from open play was struck so hard that it rebounded off the stanchion and flew back out onto the pitch, while his second, late spot-kick was his hundredth League goal for the reds. Multiple centurions 1971 – Full-back Chris Lawler played his 400th reds game in our 1-0 defeat at Leeds United thanks to a Peter Lorimer goal. 1920 – Right-back Ephraim Longworth made his 200th League appearance for the club as we were held to a goalless draw at Oldham Athletic, with winger Jackie Sheldon reaching a century of League outings for the reds. 1897 – Right-half John McCartney played his hundredth League game for the reds in our 4-2 defeat at The Wednesday, with Willie Walker and Frank Becton netting. Off, off, off! 2011 - Sebastián Coates made his reds bow as a first-half replacement for the injured Daniel Agger just before Charlie Adam was sent off after two cautions with the reds 1-0 down at Tottenham Hotspur thanks to a Luka Modrić strike. We eventually crashed to a 4-0 defeat, Kenny Dalglish’s worst ever as reds boss, as Martin Škrtel was also dismissed for a second yellow card, shortly before Jermain Defoe doubled Spurs’ lead, one of his six strikes against us to date. Emmanuel Adebayor then added a late brace, the most recent of his five goals past us. 2007 - Jermaine Pennant was dismissed, the first red card of his club career, as we held Porto to a 1-1 draw in their Estádio do Dragão, with Dirk Kuyt heading our goal after we had gone behind to a Lucho González penalty. 1999 - David Thompson and Leicester City’s Frank Sinclair were both sent off as we drew 2-2 at Filbert Street, with both our goals coming from Michael Owen, including one from the spot. Tony Cottee had opened the scoring early on with one of his eight goals against us, with Muzzy Izzet bagging a late equaliser for the Foxes. Also in Europe 2018 – Brazilian midfielder Fabinho made his reds bow as we beat Paris Saint-Germain 3-2 in our opening UEFA Champions League group game at Anfield as we started on the road to winning the cup for the sixth time. His compatriot Roberto Firmino bagged the winner in injury time, scoring in his third consecutive reds game. Daniel Sturridge headed us in front, with James Milner doubling the lead from the spot before Thomas Meunier pulled a goal back before the break. Kylian Mbappé bagged a late equaliser, but Bobby gave the reds the last laugh. 1968 - We lost 2-1 at Athletic Bilbao in the first game of our Fairs Cup campaign, with Roger Hunt grabbing our consolation. We eventually went out at this opening stage, on a coin toss! 1982 - Ian Rush struck a brace with Craig Johnston also on target as we beat Swansea City 3-0 at the Vetch Field in a First Division fixture, with Kenny Dalglish playing his 300th reds game. Dicks starts out 1993 - Full-back Julian Dicks made his reds bow in our 2-0 defeat at Everton, the most recent red to make his debut in a derby. Bruce Grobbelaar, playing his 600th reds game, and Steve McManaman came to blows in this game, with ex-red Gary Ablett skippering the Blues for the only time in a derby. Mark Ward and Tony Cottee struck for the Toffees. Czech mates on target 1996 - Euro ‘96 runners-up Czech Republic thumped Malta 6-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Teplice. Patrik Berger grabbed a brace while winning his first cap as a red. Future clubmate Vladimír Šmicer was also on the scoresheet, while making his first appearance as a Racing Club de Lens player. International bow 2018 – Future red Mateusz Musiałowski debuted for Poland Under-16’s in their 2-0 defeat by the Czech Republic. Sami on the mark 1991 - Future red Sami Hyypiä scored as Finland Under-18’s won 2-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Austria. Mixed fortunes against the Potters and Spurs 1915 - We drew 2-2 with Stoke at the Victoria Ground in a Wartime League match, with Ephraim Longworth and Fred Pagnam on the scoresheet. 1935 - Gordon Hodgson netted twice as we beat Stoke City 2-0 in a top-flight match at Anfield. 1965 - Geoff Strong nabbed our late consolation as we lost 2-1 at White Hart Lane. Alan Gilzean and Eddie Clayton netted for the home side. 1976 - David Johnson and Steve Heighway were on target as we beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 at Anfield in another top-flight meeting. Ray Clemence saved a Keith Osgood penalty to maintain his clean sheet. Emlyn honoured 2008 – Reds hero Emlyn Hughes was inducted into the National Football Museum’s Hall of Fame in a ceremony at the Millennium Mayfair Hotel in London. Other moves 2018 – Ex-reds right-back Stephen Darby announced his retirement from football at the age of 29 after being diagnosed with motor neurone disease. 2015 – Centre-half Mamadou Sakho signed a new five-year contract. He notched three times in eighty reds outings before falling out with boss Jürgen Klopp, moving on to Crystal Palace in August 2017 after a successful loan spell. 2010 - Gary McAllister was appointed Assistant Manager of Aston Villa under Gérard Houllier. He took charge of three games at the end of the season after Houllier’s illness but left the club in June 2011. 1995 - Ex-reserves forward Paul Jewell re-joined Grimsby Town on loan from Bradford City. He struck once in his three games in this second spell at Blundell Park. 1992 - Future loanee keeper Alec Chamberlain joined Chelsea on loan from Luton Town, although he did not play for their first team in his time at Stamford Bridge. Bruce blessed 1983 - Bruce Grobbelaar’s marriage to Debbie was blessed in Ubley, near Bristol. In typical Brucie fashion, both the happy couple had worn tracksuits on their actual wedding day! Also in international action 1938 – Ex-red Matt O’Mahoney played for the Republic of Ireland as they thumped Switzerland 4-0 in a friendly in Dublin. 1988 – Future red goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel played as Brazil thrashed Nigeria 4-0 in an Olympics Finals group game in South Korea. 2002 – Future red Glen Johnson represented England Under-19’s in their 3-1 defeat of Hungary in a friendly in Budapest. 2003 – Michael Foley-Sheridan featured as the Irish Under-19’s drew 1-1 with Bulgaria in a European Championships qualifier in San Marino. 2016 – Rafael Camacho skippered Portugal Under-17’s in their 5-0 trouncing of Malta in a European Championships qualifier. -
Wilkommen Christian 2000 - Christian Ziege completed his protracted signing from Middlesbrough for £5.5m. He had spent one successful season at the Riverside, netting seven times in 34 appearances. Ziege made 32 appearances whilst at Anfield, including coming off the bench in Cardiff for the first leg of the treble, before moving on again to Tottenham Hotspur. He retired from playing in October 2005 after a spell back in his native land with Borussia Mönchengladbach. Heading off 2018 – German keeper Loris Karius joined Turkish side Besiktas JK on a two-year loan. He joined the reds for £4.7m from 1. FSV Mainz 05 in July 2016, taking over the number one shirt. He made 49 first-team appearances before his contract expired in June 2022, keeping 22 clean sheets but making several high-profile errors. 1925 – Inside-left Hector Lawson left the reds to join Airdrieonians. He had signed from Rangers in January 1924, failing to score in sixteen outings. 1898 – Inside-forward Willie Walker re-joined Leith Athletic on a free transfer, having struck three times in twelve reds games since arriving in May 1897. Solo Momo 2007 - Momo Sissoko struck his only reds goal, our 7,000th in League football, with Andriy Voronin also notching as we won 2-0 at Sunderland, with Sami Hyypiä forced off after just a quarter of an hour with a broken nose and Jamie Carragher also breaking a rib and having to be replaced. Getting off to a great start in front of a new Kop 1928 - Two debutants scored in our 3-0 defeat of Bury at Anfield, as the newly-roofed Kop was opened for the first match of the season. Forward Billy Miller scored his only two goals for the club as centre-forward Albert Whitehurst added the other. Centre-half David Davidson and left-half Jimmy McDougall also made their reds bows that day. This was the last time that two debutants struck in the same match until Craig Bellamy and Mark González repeated the feat against Maccabi Haifa in August 2006. Recent moves 2010 – Midfielder Alberto Aquilani returned to his native land to join Juventus on loan, after two goals in 28 reds outings. He notched twice in 34 games for the Old Lady that season. On the same day, young Hungarian forward Krisztián Németh joined Olympiacos for £1m after a successful loan spell in Greece with A.E.K Athens. He played just four League games for them, spending much of his time out on loan. 2012 – Turkish midfielder Nuri Şahin joined on loan from Real Madrid. However, he only struck three times in twelve outings before returning to Borussia Dortmund in January 2013. 2016 – Right-back Javier Manquillo joined Sunderland on loan from Club Atlético de Madrid, netting once in 22 games as the Mackems were relegated to the Championship. On the dame day, left-back Sam Hart joined Port Vale on loan. He struck once in sixteen outings for the Valiants. Roy’s solitary strike 1956 - Right-half Roy Saunders, Dean’s dad, scored his only reds goal in our 2-0 Second Division win at Bury’s Gigg Lane in what was his hundredth League game for us. Louis Bimpson grabbed the other with Geoff Twentyman reaching a century of League outings. Mølby makes his mark in East Anglia 1992 - Jan Mølby scored our first Premier League penalty as we held Ipswich Town to a 2-2 draw at Portman Road, with Mark Walters nabbing our other goal. Jason Dozzell and then Chris Kiwomya equalised for the home side. 1984 - Jan made his first-class reds debut in our 3-3 draw at Norwich City. A Steve Bruce own goal put us ahead, the hundredth we had benefited from in all competitions to date, with our other goals coming from Kenny Dalglish and a Phil Neal penalty. Mick Channon scored the last of his seven goals past us, with Peter Mendham and Keith Bertschin also on target. Most recently 2018 – Mohamed Salah bagged the only goal of Brighton & Hove Albion’s League visit to Anfield. 2020 – We came from two goals down to draw a behind closed doors friendly 2-2 at Red Bull Salzburg with Rhian Brewster netting twice. Benvenuto Mario 2014 - Mario Balotelli signed from AC Milan for £16m, going on to score just four times in 28 outings, although half of these came from the bench. He left for Nice on a free transfer two years later after a season on loan at AC Milan. On the same day, the reds lost 3-1 at Manchester City as Emre Can, Lazar Marković and Alberto Moreno all made their debuts. Stevan Jovetić struck twice, the most recent of his four goals past us, with Sergio Agüero also scoring, one of his six against us to date. Our goal came when Pablo Zabaleta put through his own net. 1986 – We were held to a goalless draw at Anfield by Manchester City. Ian Rush was sent off for ‘foul or abusive language’ as he was leaving the pitch at the end of the game, although this was later rescinded. Another debutant 1979 - Centre-half Colin Irwin made his reds bow as we saw off West Bromwich Albion 3-1 at Anfield, thanks to Terry McDermott and a David Johnson brace, with Peter Barnes netting for the Baggies. This was our 1,500th home League game. 1976 - We also won at The Hawthorns, with John Toshack nabbing the only goal of the game. 1923 - Our first game on this day in history was also played there, but we went down 2-0 as we started off the season badly. Forward Dick Johnson seriously injured his knee, not making his comeback until the following April. Stan Davies netted one of his four strikes against the reds, with Arthur Fitton also netting. Keeping crisis 1990 - Sheffield United’s goalkeeper Simon Tracey had to go off injured in only the fourteenth minute at Bramall Lane, to be replaced by defender John Pemberton. We went on to win 3-1, with goals from Ray Houghton, Ian Rush and John Barnes. Brian Deane was on target for the home side with the first of his eight goals against us. We have also played the Blades twice more on this day in history. 1965 - We lost 1-0 at Anfield as Mick Jones bagged the first of his seven strikes past the reds. 1948 – We drew 3-3 in L4, with Jack Balmer nabbing a brace and Billy Liddell also on target for the reds. Another good start 1973 - Steve Heighway bagged the only goal of our season opener at home to Stoke City as Ian Callaghan played his 600th reds game. Bill Shankly was presented with Bell’s Manager of the Year trophy for the previous season, also parading the recently-retired Gordon Banks around Anfield before the match. Happy birthdays 1909 - Goalkeeper Andrew Aitken was born in Newcastle. He signed from Wallsend in March 1930 but only ever made one senior reds appearance, in our 3-3 draw at Blackburn Rovers in December of that year, returning to amateur football with Mickley in April 1931. 1969 – Ex-reserves forward Tony Cousins was born in The Liberties, Dublin. He won the PFAI Young Player of the Year in 1989/90 before joining the reds. He moved to Middlesbrough on a free transfer in the summer of 1993 having failed to make the breakthrough at Anfield. Nigel Clough put us in front, but Teddy Sheringham struck two of his seven goals against the reds, including a penalty. 1970 – Bobby Graham was on target as Crystal Palace held us to a 1-1 draw in L4. 1951 – We came from behind to win 3-1 at Chelsea with Kevin Baron, Billy Liddell and Albert Stubbins all on the scoresheet. Stevie’s award 2005 - Steven Gerrard was presented with the UEFA Club Footballer of the Year award in Monaco, having led us to Champions League glory earlier that year. Champion Roy 1973 - Reds reserves left-back and future boss Roy Evans played for the Philadelphia Atoms as they beat Dallas Tornado 2-0 in the NASL Final in Dallas. Internationals in action 2022 – Future red Trey Nyoni bagged his only goal while winning his first cap for England Under-16’s as they won a friendly 3-2 in Italy, with Carter Pinnington also featuring. 2016 – Ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper was in charge as England Under-17’s played two games against Belgium at St. George’s Park on this day, with Rhian Brewster on target while winning his first cap in a 3-1 victory before a 6-0 thumping. 2010 – Matty Regan netted on his debut for England Under-17’s, with Raheem Sterling also making his bow at this level in their 2-2 friendly draw with Turkey at Sincil Bank.
