Happy birthday Mr. Kennedy 1954 - Alan Kennedy was born in Sunderland. He is best remembered for his winning strikes in two European Cup Finals, but also won five League titles, four League Cups and three FA Charity Shields after moving from Newcastle United for £330,000 in August 1978, making 359 appearances and notching twenty times before joining his hometown club for £100,000 in September 1985. 1911 - Frank O’Donnell was born in Buckhaven, Fife. He struck once in two Wartime appearances for the reds. He gained six Scotland caps as well as scoring for Preston North End in every round of the FA Cup in 1937, including the Final. 1990 – Scottish reserves midfielder Gary Mackay-Steven was born in Thurso. He joined the reds in 2007 but failed to break through before being released two years later. 2006 – Forward Keyrol Figueroa was born in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. He signed pro terms with the reds in May 2024 and represents the USA at Under-17’s level even though his father was a senior international with Honduras. He arrived from Villarreal for £6m in July 2005, keeping a remarkable 177 clean sheets in his 394 games and helping us to claim the FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FA Charity Shield before moving to Bayern München for £2m in August 2014 after spending the previous campaign on loan at SSC Napoli. Farewell to a legend 1960 - Billy Liddell played his 534th and final reds game as we lost 1-0 to Southampton in a Second Division fixture at Anfield. Right-half Gordon Milne made his reds debut in the same game. 1994 - We also faced Southampton, winning 2-0 with John Barnes and Robbie Fowler on target at The Dell. Bruce Grobbelaar and former reds reserve Jim Magilton both featured for the home side. 1968 – Tony Hateley played his 56th and last reds game in our 1-0 defeat at Leeds United, with Mick Jones netting one of his seven goals past us. Keepers on the move 2002 - We signed two goalkeepers on transfer deadline day as Gérard Houllier lost faith with incumbent Sander Westerveld. Jerzy Dudek signed from Feyenoord for £4.85m, while Chris Kirkland arrived from Coventry City for £6m. Dudek played 186 reds games, with Kirkland making 45 appearances. Meanwhile, Pepe Reina played for Spain Under-21’s as they beat Austria 2-0 in Burriana, and fellow future red Christian Poulsen featured in Denmark’s 2-0 defeat of Northern Ireland in another qualifier in Odense. Final caps 2017 – Philippe Coutinho struck has last goal for Brazil while a reds player as they beat Ecuador 2-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Porto Alegre, with future red Alisson Becker also in action. Future red Naby Keïta scored as Guinea beat Libya 3-2 in a qualifier in Conakry. On the same day, Mohamed Salah won his first cap as a red in Egypt’s 1-0 qualifying defeat in Uganda. Ragnar Klavan, Gini Wijnaldum, ex-reds Péter Gulácsi and Brad Smith, and future red Xherdan Shaqiri also featured in qualifiers that day. 2016 – Ex-red Robbie Keane won his 146th and last cap for the Republic of Ireland, netting in their 4-0 thumping of Oman in a friendly in Dublin. Internationals on target 1996 - Ex-red Dean Saunders netted twice while winning his first cap as a Nottingham Forest player, and 53rd in total, as Wales thumped San Marino 6-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Cardiff. A-L-B-E-R-T, Albert Stubbins is the man for me 1919 - Legendary reds centre-forward Albert Stubbins was born in Wallsend. He signed from Newcasle United for a British record £12,500 fee in September 1946 and struck 83 times in 178 reds matches, helping to power us to the first League championship played after the Second World War. He became a scout for the club in 1954, a post he held for the rest of the decade, He was also the only footballer to appear on the cover of The Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” album. Forwards moving in 2018 – Xherdan Shaqiri signed from Stoke City for £13.75m, notching eight times in 63 outings before moving to Olympique Lyonnais for €6m in August 2021, helping us to claim the Premier League title and FIFA Club World Cup, as well as remaining on the bench as we claimed the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Super Cup. 2012 - Fabio Borini signed from Roma for £10.4m to become new boss Brendan Rodgers’ first capture. He was sold to West Ham United for £7.5m in July 2007, then the record fee paid by the Irons. He returned to Anfield on a free transfer from Manchester City last August, netting nine times in 37 games and helping us to claim the Carling Cup before joining his hometown club for free in August 2012. On the same day, recent Fitness Coach Eduardo Parra García was born in Vigo. Forward Ben Woodburn netted his first goal for the club, with Roberto Firmino nabbing a brace and Lucas Leiva also on target, while Danny Ings had a penalty saved. Debuting in the Far East 2011 - Conor Coady scored in his first reds game as we beat Guangdong Sunray Cave 4-3 in Guangzhou, with Christian Poulsen nabbing his only reds goal. On the move 2009 - John Welsh signed for Tranmere Rovers, having been released by Hull City the previous month. He bagged eleven goals in 149 appearances while at Prenton Park, moving on to Preston North End in May 2012. 2007 – Left-back Paul Konchesky joined Fulham from West Ham United for £2m, after two goals in seventy outings for the Hammers. 2011 - Konchesky was sold to Leicester City for £1.5m, having played just eighteen reds games since his £3.5m capture from Fulham the previous August. 1911 – Right-back Alf West left Anfield again, this time moving on to Notts County. He struck six times in 141 reds games across two spells, first arriving from Barnsley St. Peter’s in November 1903. He helped us to the Second Division championship in 1905 and our second League title a year later, joining Reading in June 1909, becoming their club captain but he only stayed for a season before returning to Anfield in May 1910. He only played five times in this second spell. 2016 – Winger Sergi Canós was sold to Norwich City for an initial £2.5m, netting three times in nine first-team games before joining fellow Championship side Brentford on loan. On the same day, midfielder Ryan Flynn joined Oldham Athletic from Sheffield United after nineteen goals in 119 games for the Blades. 2018 – Midfielder Adam Phillips joined Hamilton Academical on loan from Norwich City, playing just two senior games while in Scotland. 2022 – Winger Sheyi Ojo signed permanently for Cardiff City, having previously had a loan spell with the Bluebirds. He had struck once in thirteen senior reds games. On the same day, Raheem Sterling joined Chelsea from Manchester City for £47.5m. 2023 – Dutch centre-half Sepp van den Berg joined 1. FSV Mainz 05 on loan. He struck three times in 35 outings in his campaign with Die Nullfünfer. Free Jürgen 2022 – It was announced that reds boss Jürgen Klopp would be awarded the Freedom of the city of Liverpool. Last strike 2021 – Future red Alexis Mac Allister scored his final goal for Argentina Under-23’s as they drew a friendly 2-2 in South Korea. In international action 1988 – Future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel featured for Brazil in their 4-1 defeat of Saudi Arabia in a Australia Bicentenary Gold Cup group game in Melbourne. 1991 – Taffarel played for Brazil again as they lost 2-0 Colombia in a Copa América group game in Chile. 1995 – Taffarel represented his country once more, this time in a 3-0 defeat of Colombia in another Copa América group game, this time in Uruguay. 1999 - Brad Friedel played for the USA as they met Derby County in a friendly in Denver. 2004 - Arnaud Bühler played for Switzerland Under-19’s as they drew 1-1 with Italy in a European Championships qualifier. On the same day, future red Javier Mascherano featured for Argentina as they beat Uruguay 4-2 in a Copa América group game in Peru. 2007 - Harry Kewell featured as Australia lost 3-1 to Iraq in an AFC Asian Cup group game in Bangkok. 2011 – Lucas Leiva played for Brazil in their 4-2 defeat of Ecuador in a Copa América group game in Argentina.

Clinching the title 1982 - We claimed our thirteenth League title with a game remaining by beating Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 at Anfield, having been mid-table at Christmas. Ex-red Ray Clemence was in the Spurs goal, with Mark Lawrenson, Kenny Dalglish and Ronnie Whelan scoring past him after Glenn Hoddle had handed the visitors the lead with a glorious strike, one of his four against us. 1984 - Ian Rush was on target as we drew 1-1 with Norwich City, having won the League three days before at Notts County. Kenny Dalglish played his 400th reds game while Phil Neal appeared for us in the League for the 400th time. Quadruple farewell 2004 - Emile Heskey, Danny Murphy and Michael Owen all played their final first-class games for the reds. Owen struck the equaliser as we were held to a 1-1 draw by Newcastle United at Anfield, so finishing the season in fourth spot. This was also Gérard Houllier’s last game in charge, while Paul Harrison was on the bench for the first of thirteen times. Shola Ameobi netted for the visitors. 1989 – Scottish midfielder Kevin MacDonald left the reds for Coventry City after a number of loan spells away from Anfield while recovering from a broken leg. He had played 64 reds games, scoring five times, following his £400,000 capture from Leicester City in November 1984. He helped us to the League and FA Cup double in 1986, with skipper Alan Hansen calling him “far and away our most influential player.” Sammy returns 2008 – Sammy Lee returned to the club as Assistant Manager, having left the backroom staff in the summer of 2004 for a full-time post with England, before joining Bolton Wanderers. Forwards in and out 1935 - Jack Balmer signed as an amateur from Everton, turning professional three months later. He went on to score 110 times in 309 games, helping us to the League title in 1947. It was during that season that he netted hat-tricks in three consecutive games, a remarkable feat that has yet to be matched in English top-flight football. He also played in the FA Cup Final three years later. 1923 - Jack Sambrook moved on to Stockport County having played just twice after signing from Wolverhampton Wanderers in April 1922. Pepe the best again 2008 - Pepe Reina was awarded the Barclays Golden Glove Award for most clean sheets for the third successive season, having kept eighteen shut-outs in the League. Most recently 2011 – We lost 2-0 at home to Tottenham Hotspur to damage our hopes of qualifying for Europe. Spurs took an early lead when Rafael van der Vaart’s strike deflected in off Glen Johnson, with Luka Modrić converting a controversial second-half penalty. 2016 – We drew 1-1 at West Bromwich Albion, with winger Sergi Canos making his only senior reds appearance. Midfielder Cameron Brannagan, winger Jordon Ibe, centre-half Martin Škrtel and left-back Brad Smith all played their last games for the club. Ibe struck our goal as we finished the League season in eighth, our joint lowest placing since returning to the top flight in 1962. This game came just three days before the UEFA Europa League Final against Sevilla in Basel. 2023 – We won 3-0 at Leicester City as Curtis Jones bagged a first-half brace. Trent Alexander-Arnold added the third, with Mohamed Salah assisting all three goals as Fábio Carvalho appeared for the 21st and final time. Happy birthdays 1981 – Left-back Paul Konchesky was born in Barking. Roy Hodgson paid £3.5m for him on transfer deadline day in August 2010, as well as transferring Lauri Dalla Valle and Alex Kačaniklić to Fulham as part of the deal, who were valued at a combined £1.5m. The highly-rated Frenchman signed from Saint-Étienne on a free transfer in August 2003 but failed to break through into the senior squad, moving back to France to join Lorient in July 2006 after a loan spell there. 1976 – Winger Mark Kennedy was born in Dublin. He signed from Millwall for £1.5m in March 1995 but only played 21 times for us, before being sold to Wimbledon for £1.75m three years later. 1979 - Forward Sean Friars was born in Derry. He never made our first team, moving on to Ipswich Town in 1998. Last game before Istanbul 2005 - Argentinean centre-back Mauricio Pellegrino played his thirteenth and final reds game as we beat Aston Villa 2-1 at Anfield in our final League game of the season, to finish behind our neighbours in fifth. Djibril Cissé struck a brace, including a penalty, with Gareth Barry on target for the Villains with the first of his four goals against the reds to date. Igor Bišcan also made his final reds outing as he played his 118th reds game, with Dietmar Hamann turning out for the reds on the 250th occasion. Midfielder Antonio Núñez also appeared for the last time, just his 27th outing. International debutants 1946 - Billy Liddell made his international bow as Scotland beat Switzerland 3-1 in a Victory International at Hampden Park. 1955 - He also played for his country as they drew a friendly 2-2 in Yugoslavia. Future red Tommy Younger was in the Scots’ goal that day. 2008 - Jack Hobbs won his first cap for England Under-19’s, playing alongside clubmate Adam Hammill as they lost 2-0 to Russia in a European Championships qualifier in Walsall. 2009 – Christopher Buchtmann played for Germany Under-17’s as they reached the Final of the European Championships by beating Italy 2-0 in Dessau. Double trebles 1946 - Jack Balmer bagged four goals and Cyril Done scored a hat-trick as we thumped Baltimore All Stars 9-0 in an end-of-season friendly at the Municipal Stadium in Baltimore. Willie Fagan added a brace. 1943 - Jack Balmer also struck three times as we drew the second leg of the Lancashire Cup Final 3-3 with Manchester United at Maine Road, to lose 6-4 on aggregate. Holding on 1920 – We retained the Lancashire Senior Cup, sharing the trophy after the Final at Anfield ended 1-1 after extra time against Manchester United. Tom Miller scored for the reds. King Kenny against Clem 1976 - Kenny Dalglish scored through the legs of his future clubmate Ray Clemence as Scotland beat England 2-1 in the British International Championships at Hampden Park. Kevin Keegan, Ray Kennedy and Phil Thompson all also played. Sami in charge 2012 - Sami Hyypiä was appointed Team Manager of Bayer 04 Leverkusen on a permanent basis after a successful temporary period in charge. He stayed in charge until being sacked in April 2014. A busy day 2002 - Danny Murphy signed a new five-year contract. Meanwhile, Stéphane Henchoz was named Swiss Player of the Year, for the second consecutive season. On the same day, our Under-19’s won 3-2 at Highbury in the second leg of the FA Premier Academy League Play-Off Final, but it was not enough to overturn a 5-1 first leg defeat. Also, ex-red Mike Marsh signed for Accrington Stanley from Boston United on a free transfer. He spent one season there, helping them to the UniBond Premier League, and promotion to the Conference, before becoming Manager at Burscough, back in the UniBond. Tosh for Wales 1971 - John Toshack won his first cap as a red, and ninth in total, as Wales were held to a goalless draw by Scotland in the British International Championships in Cardiff, with future red Peter Cormack featuring for the Scots. 1973 - He also turned out for the Welsh in the same competition, as they lost 3-0 to England at Wembley. Clubmate Emlyn Hughes was on the winning side that day. 1974 - Crazy Horse also featured for England, skippering them to a 1-0 defeat of Northern Ireland at Wembley in the same competition, with Kevin Keegan also playing. At Hampden 2002 - Ex-red Steve McManaman and future red Fernando Morientes both played in the UEFA Champions League Final for Real Madrid as they beat Bayer 04 Leverkusen 2-1 at Hampden Park. Dan’s happy day 2010 – Centre-half Daniel Agger married Sophie Nelson in Hvidovre in his native Denmark. Internationals on target 2019 – Future red Darwin Núñez struck for Uruguay Under-20’s beat Spain 2-1 in a friendly in Poland. 2011 – Samed Yeşil netted as Germany Under-17’s lost 5-2 to the Netherlands in the European Championships Final in Serbia, with fellow future red Emre Can also playing. 1983 – Future reds centre-half Glenn Hysén scored as Sweden thumped Cyprus 5-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Malmö. In and out 2006 - Ex-reds reserves forward Jon Newby was released by Bury, after five goals in 51 appearances in his second spell at Gigg Lane. On the same day, centre-half James Smith singed pro terms with the reds. His solitary senior appearance was in a League Cup tie at Reading in October 2006, moving on to Stockport County in December 2007 on a free transfer, after a successful loan spell. Marina honoured 2009 - Kenny Dalglish’s wife Marina was awarded the Citizens of Honour award by Liverpool’s Lord Mayor, which was collected on her behalf by Kenny as she was ill. Finishing third 1968 – We ended the season with a 2-1 loss at Stoke City to finish in third place. Roger Hunt struck after Peter Dobing had netted the last of eight goals against the reds, with John Mahoney bagging the winner. Also in international action 1929 – Future reds Ernie Blenkinsop and Tom Cooper both played for England as they lost a friendly 4-3 to Spain in Madrid. 1937 - Andy Beattie represented Scotland as they beat Czechoslovakia 3-1 in a friendly in Prague. He guested with the reds during the war, and later joined the backroom staff at Anfield after a successful management career. 1949 - Ray Lambert featured for Wales as they lost a friendly 3-2 in Portugal. 1990 – John Barnes and Steve McMahon played for England as they beat Denmark 1-0 in a friendly at Wembley, with Jim Magilton appearing for Northern Ireland Under-23’s in their 3-2 defeat by the Republic of Ireland in Portadown. 2002 – Stéphane Henchoz played for Switzerland in their 3-1 friendly defeat by Canada in St. Gallen. 2014 – Future red Joe Gomez featured as England Under-17’s lost 2-0 to the Netherlands in a European Championships Finals group game in Malta. 2016 – Ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper took charge of England Under-17’s as they lost 1-0 to Spain in the European Championships Quarter-final in Azerbaijan.

Luis off the mark 2011 - Luis Suárez netted on his reds debut as a substitute to round off a 2-0 victory over Stoke City at Anfield. Raul Meireles had opened the scoring immediately after the break. Hodgson’s seventeenth 1935 - Gordon Hodgson scored his seventeenth and final reds hat-trick in a 4-2 League win at Leeds United, with Alf Hanson also netting. This remains a club record. Arthur Hydes struck the last two of his four goals against the reds that day. 1929 - We also faced Leeds, drawing 2-2 at Elland Road, with Jimmy McDougall scoring as centre-forward Albert Whitehurst struck his second and final goal in his eighth and last reds appearance. Right-back Bob Done put through his own net, while Thomas Jennings netted his ninth and last goal against the reds. Keeper Elisha Scott missed the game to feature for Northern Ireland in their 2-2 British International Championships draw with Wales in Wrexham. 1946 - Our other trip to face the Yorkshire outfit on this day came in a Wartime League match that we lost 3-0. Reds galore 1952 - Our record home attendance was set, as 61,905 crammed into Anfield to watch us beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 in the FA Cup Fourth Round. Bob Paisley and Cyril Done were on target inside the first nine minutes that day. Unfortunately, we went out at Burnley in the next round. Most recently 2014 – We were held to a 1-1 draw at West Bromwich Albion, with future Baggie Daniel Sturridge putting the reds in front. A wayward pass from Kolo Touré handed ex-Blue Victor Anichebe a golden opportunity to equalise that he capitalised on. Martin Kelly played his 62nd and final reds game. 2016 – Jordan Henderson played his 200th reds game as we lost 2-0 at eventual champions Leicester City thanks to a Jamie Vardy brace, the first of his ten goals past us to date. Robbie departs 2009 - Robbie Keane returned to Tottenham Hotspur for an initial £15m fee, having travelled in the opposite direction for £19.3m seven months previously. He had struck seven times in 28 reds outings. Pepe sets a record 2008 - Pepe Reina kept his fiftieth clean sheet in the League, in his 92nd game, to set a new club record as we beat Sunderland 3-0 at Anfield. Peter Crouch and Fernando Torres struck before Steven Gerrard converted a late penalty. On the same day, future red Nikola Sarić played for Denmark Under-17’s as they lost 3-0 to England in the Algarve Tournament. Taki off 2021 – Japanese forward Takumi Minamino joined Southampton on loan for the rest of the season, netting twice in ten outings before returning to Anfield. Two defenders depart 2004 - Jon Otsemobor joined Bolton Wanderers on loan. He had made five starts for the reds that season, but only appeared once while at the Reebok Stadium, a 3-1 defeat by Manchester City. He moved on to League One strugglers Rotherham United in the summer. On the same day, Abel Xavier’s contract was cancelled by mutual consent. The Portuguese defender then joined mid-table German Bundesliga side Hannover 96. He had netted twice in 21 reds games, of which we only lost three, including on his debut in a 6-0 thumping of Ipswich Town at Portman Road. Double century 2003 - We secured our 200th Premiership win. A Milan Baroš header and a Steven Gerrard thunderbolt give us an early cushion at West Ham United. A late Emile Heskey goal, his third header in as many League games, wrapped up a comfortable 3-0 win over the Hammers, who were relegated at the end of the season. This goal trickled over the line with such a lack of pace that it failed to actually hit the back of the net! Larry’s farewell 1974 - Larry Lloyd played his 218th and final reds game as substitute Peter Cormack struck the only goal of the game in the last minute against Norwich City at Anfield. He moved to Coventry City that summer, before joining Nottingham Forest. On our way to Wembley 1982 - We edged towards our second consecutive League Cup Final as Terry McDermott and Ian Rush both struck in the first four minutes of the second half in a 2-0 win at Ipswich Town in our Semi-final first leg. We drew the return to reach the Final 4-2 on aggregate. This was the first of three consecutive matches in which we faced the Tractor Boys. When is a win not a win 1895 - We won our First Round FA Cup match with Barnsley St. Peters 2-1 in wintry conditions, after extra time, thanks to goals from Malcolm McVean and Jimmy Ross. However, a replay was ordered following a protest as the home side had not agreed to the extra period decided upon by the referee. Happily, we also won this second meeting, this time 4-0 at Anfield. However, we went out to Nottingham Forest at the next stage. Jimmy’s hat-trick 1924 - Centre-forward Jimmy Walsh grabbed a treble as we came from behind to win an FA Cup Second Round tie 4-1 at holders Bolton Wanderers. Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers also notched as we progressed as far as the Fourth Round that season before being knocked out by Newcastle United. John Smith struck one of his seven goals against the reds. Arthur on target again 1918 - Inside-forward Arthur Metcalf struck for the third consecutive reds game as we thumped Southport Central 6-1 in a Wartime League match at Anfield. Harry Lewis and Thomas Bennett both netted braces with our other goal coming from Donald McKinlay. Shanks off the mark 1938 - Bill Shankly scored his first League goal for Preston North End as they came from two goals down to hold us to a 2-2 top-flight draw at Anfield as we suffered our fourth draw in our last five League games. Jack Balmer netted for the reds, with Willie Fagan scoring from the spot and Bud Maxwell nabbing the last of his seven strikes past us. Births and death 1997 – Spanish winger Sergi Canós was born in Nules. He arrived from Barcelona in the summer of 2013. He failed to break into the first team, moving on to Norwich City for an initial £2.5m in July 2016. 1966 - Reserves winger Brian Mooney was born in Dublin. He signed from Home Farm for £20,000 in August 1983 but only ever played one senior reds game, as a substitute for Jim Beglin in a League Cup win at Fulham in October 1986, moving on to Preston North End in November 1987. 1874 - Full-back John Stephenson was born in Leigh-on-Sea. He played for our second string in the Lancashire Combination, without ever making our first-team. He later played for Gainsborough Trinity, Swindon Town and Tottenham Hotspur, and sadly died aged just 34 following a bout of pneumonia. 1990 - Don Welsh died. He had guested for the reds during the Second World War, and later took charge at Anfield for 232 games over five years during the 1950’s. He has the indignity of being our first Manager to be sacked, in May 1956, after presiding over our relegation from the top flight in 1954, before failing to lead us back to the promised land. Liddell at the double 1946 - Billy Liddell bagged a brace as Scotland beat Ireland 3-2 in a Victory International at Windsor Park. Others out on loan 2015 – Winger Sheyi Ojo moved to Wigan Athletic, playing eleven games for the Latics. On the same day, ex-red Tom Ince joined Derby County on loan from Hull City, moving there permanently five months later for £4.75m after eleven goals in eighteen outings for the Rams. On the same day, ex-reserves midfielder Gary Mackay-Steven joined Celtic from Dundee United for £250,000, centre-half Gabriel Paletta was sold to AC Milan from Parma for €2.5m and Mohamed Salah joined Fiorentina on loan from Chelsea, bagging nine goals in 26 games for La Viola. 2009 – Reserves keeper Péter Gulácsi joined Hereford United on loan, while second string winger Adam Hammill moved to Barnsley on a temporary basis. The young stopper played eighteen League One games for the Bulls, while Hammill struck once in fourteen outings before making the move permanent in August 2009. On the same day, future reds midfielder Charlie Adam joined Blackpool on loan from Rangers. He struck twice in thirteen outings before signing on permanently for £500,000 six months later. 1984 - Ex-red David Johnson joined Barnsley on loan from Everton. Sadio’s record 2022 - Sadio Mané became Senegal’s joint top all-time scorer when he netted his 29th goal for his country as Senegal beat Burkina Faso 3-1 in their Africa Cup of Nations Semi-final in Cameroon. Ex-red Liam Millar featured for Canada as they won a World Cup qualifier 2-0 in El Salvador on the same day. Naby’s last 2024 – Ex-red Naby Keïta won his 58th and final cap as he captained Guinea in their 3-1 defeat by DR Congo in their Africa Cup of Nations Quarter-final in Abidjan. Also in African action 2004 - Salif Diao and El-Hadji Diouf faced future red Momo Sissoko in the African Cup of Nations Finals as Senegal and Mali shared two goals in a group fixture in Tunis. Diao and Sissoko were both booked. 2013 – Ex-red Momo Sissoko played as Mali beat host nation 3-1 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the Quarter-Final meeting in Durban. Barclay resigns 1892 – William Barclay’s resignation as Vice Chairman of Everton was accepted. He tendered it four days earlier after John Houlding had asked the Blues to quit Anfield. He later worked as a Secretary-c**-Manager for the first four years of the reds’ existence. Souey sacked 2006 - Graeme Souness was sacked as Manager of Newcastle United, after just 36 wins in 83 games. He had taken charge after the dismissal of Sir Bobby Robson in September 2004. Fabs comes to Europe 2001 - Left-back Fábio Aurélio signed for Valencia from São Paulo. He struck eleven times in 81 outings and helped them to claim La Liga before following Rafael Benítez to Anfield in July 2006. Other reds games 1985 – Sheffield Wednesday held us to a 1-1 draw at Hillsborough, with Mark Lawrenson grabbing a late equaliser. 1957 – Alan A’Court was on target as we lost 2-1 to Middlesbrough in a Second Division encounter. 1907 – Bill McPherson netted the only goal of our FA Cup Second Round tie at Oldham Athletic. We were knocked out at The Wednesday in the Fourth Round that season. Don for the Scots 1994 - Reds midfielder Don Hutchison played his only game for Scotland B as they lost 2-1 to the Welsh B side at the Racecourse Ground in Wrexham. Youngsters in action 2017 – Future red Ryan Gravenberch played for the Dutch Under-15’s as they drew a friendly 1-1 with the Republic of Ireland. 2009 - Emiliano Insúa skippered Argentina as they lost 2-0 to Brazil in a final phase game at the Sudamericano Sub-20 “Juventud de América” tournament in Venezuela. Meanwhile, Ronald Huth was cautioned as Paraguay beat the host nation 3-0 in the same competition. 2000 - Haukur Ingi Guðnason and future red John Arne Riise both featured in Nordic Cup games in La Manga.

Transfer deadline day drama 2011 – We broke our record transfer twice in the same day, first when Luis Suárez arrived from Ajax for a fee of £22.8m. We then signed Andy Carroll for a British record £35m, with Fernando Torres then joining Chelsea for £50m, another British record. On the same day, left-back Paul Konchesky joined Nottingham Forest on loan while young midfielder Conor Thomas arrived from Coventry City on a temporary basis, although the move was not made permanent. Meanwhile, El-Hadji Diouf joined Rangers on loan from Blackburn Rovers and Daniel Sturridge joined Bolton Wanderers from Chelsea until the end of the season. 1923 – Scottish centre-half David Pratt signed from Bradford City. He played 84 times for the reds, scoring just once and being known for his long throw-ins. He left Anfield to sign for Bury in November 1927. In steps Royston 1994 - Roy Evans took over as Manager, after almost thirty years at Anfield. He remained in charge for nearly five years, leading us to a Coca-Cola Cup win in 1995, and the FA Cup Final a year later, although he struggled to deliver a consistent Championship challenge. In comes Al 2007 - Álvaro Arbeloa signed from Real Club Deportivo de La Coruña for £2.64m. He struck twice in 98 senior outings, playing right across the back four and impressing with his solid performances before moving to Real Madrid for £3.5m in July 2009. On the same day, young Spanish midfielder Francis Durán signed from Málaga for a compensation fee, while Uruguayan centre-back Ronald Huth arrived from Tacuary. Neither made the break-through at Anfield and have since moved on. Goalscoring feats 1976 - John Toshack bagged a genuine hat-trick of right-foot and left-foot shots and then a header as we thumped West Ham United 4-0 at Upton Park. He had to retire seven months later due to heart problems. On the same day, winger Victor Moses joined Wigan Athletic from Crystal Palace for £2.5m after the Eagles went into administration. He had struck eleven times in 69 games in south London.
