Birth of the legend 1913 - Bill Shankly was born in Glenbuck, Ayrshire. He was the ninth of ten children, and the youngest of five boys. Words cannot fully explain his importance to the history of Liverpool Football Club. However, his honours as reds boss between December 1959 and July 1974 included three League titles, two FA Cups, UEFA Cup and the Second Division championship. 1936 - Centre-half John Nicholson was born in Liverpool. He signed as a professional in January 1957, but only made one senior appearance before joining Port Vale in August 1961, playing over 200 games for them. 2001 – Midfielder Jake Cain was born in Wigan. He signed as a professional in September 2019, making his only senior appearance in our FA Cup Fourth Round replay against Shrewsbury Town in February 2020. He moved on to Swindon Town in January 2023. Spurs stuffed 1978 - Tottenham Hotspur suffered their worst ever Anfield defeat, despite including their new World Cup winners, Osvaldo Ardiles and Ricky Villa. Kenny Dalglish and substitute David Johnson both grabbed a brace, added to by Ray Kennedy and a twice-taken Phil Neal penalty, before Terry McDermott rounded off a brilliant team move to make it 7-0. Into the League 1893 - We played our first ever game in the Football League, winning 2-0 at Middlesbrough Ironopolis. Forward Malcolm McVean scored our first ever League goal after an hour, with centre-half Joe McQue nabbing the other. James Henderson played his only senior reds game, while winger Patrick Gordon and forward Jimmy Stott also made their debuts in this game. This was also the first ever League game staged at the Paradise Ground. A busy day 2013 – A whole host of transfers took place on deadline day, with forward Fabio Borini joining Sunderland on loan, while ex-reds left-back Andrea Dossena also signed for the Black Cats on a free transfer from Rafael Benítez’s SSC Napoli. Two centre-halves arrived at Anfield, with Mamadou Sakho arriving from Paris Saint-Germain for £15m and Tiago Ilori signing from Sporting Clube de Portugal for £7m. On the same day, winger Victor Moses arrived on loan from Chelsea with Dani Pacheco leaving the reds to sign for Spanish side AD Alcorcón. Meanwhile, Momo Sissoko had his contract with Paris Saint-Germain terminated. More red ins and outs 1959 – Forward Bobby Murdoch left the reds to join Barrow. He struck seven times in nineteen reds games after signing as a professional in May 1957, as we struggled in the Second Division. 1994 - John Scales signed from Wimbledon for £3.5m. He struck four times in 94 games in his two years at Anfield, before joining Tottenham Hotspur for £2.6m in December 1996. On the same day, Paul Stewart joined Wolverhampton Wanderers on loan. He scored twice in ten appearances for Wolves, and later joined Burnley and Sunderland on loan, having slipped out of the first team picture at Anfield. 2014- Cameroon-born centre-back Stephen Sama left the reds to sign for VfB Stuttgart having failed to make a senior appearance since arriving from Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund in July 2009. 2015 – The capture of Brazilian midfielder Allan Rodrigues de Souza from Internacional for a reported £500,000 was announced, with his loan departure to Finnish club Seinäjoen Jalkapallokerho also revealed on the same day. 2019 – Winger Ryan Kent was sold to Rangers for £7m after a successful loan spell in which he had struck six times in 43 appearances. On the same day, keeper Shamal George joined Marine on loan and forward Bobby Duncan was sold to Fiorentina for €2m. Meanwhile, Martin Škrtel was released after less than a month with Atalanta and signed for İstanbul Başakşehir on the same day. Nice one Cyril 1939 - Cyril Done scored the only goal of the game on his reds debut at home to Chelsea, the day after Germany invaded Poland, and the day before Britain declared war, which resulted in the cancellation of the football season, so he had to wait until October 1946 to make his official reds bow. Full-back Jim Harley was sent off. Out-gunned We have faced Arsenal four times in top-flight matches on this day in history, without securing victory. 1905 - We lost 3-1 at Woolwich Arsenal with Bobby Robinson bagging our consolation, and Sam Raybould missing a penalty in our first game of the season. Jack Parkinson broke his wrist in this match, keeping him out of the side for six months. We finished the game with nine men after Billy Dunlop twisted his knee. Tim Coleman netted the first of his nine goals against the reds, with ex-red CharlIe Satterthwaite and Jimmy Blair also on the scoresheet. 1911 - We returned to the Manor Ground for another season opener, when John McConnell scored his only reds goal with Samual Gilligan also netting as we left with a 2-2 draw. 1922 - We lost 1-0 to Arsenal at Highbury, thanks to an Arthur Hutchins penalty. 2012 – Loanee Nuri Şahin made his reds bow as the Gunners comfortably won 2-0 at Anfield, with Lukas Podolski and Santi Cazorla bagging the goals. Beating the Trotters We have entertained Bolton Wanderers three times on this day in history, winning twice and drawing on the other occasion. 1914 - Billy Lacey, Arthur Metcalf, Jimmy Nicholl and Jackie Sheldon all struck as we won our opening First Division fixture 4-3. Evan Jones scored, with Joe Smith grabbing two of his twelve goals against us. 1916 - Fred Pagnam, Arthur Goddard and Jack Bamber netted as we won a Wartime League match 3-1. 1931 - Dave Wright bagged a brace in a 2-2 top-flight draw as George Gibson scored the final goal of his five past us, with Ray Westwood netting the first of his nine. Red centurions 1950 - Jack Balmer struck his hundredth reds goal as we drew 1-1 at Aston Villa. 1925 – Matt McQueen reached a century of League games in charge as we beat Notts County 2-0 at Anfield. Billy Flint put through his own net, with Dick Forshaw also scoring inside the opening half hour. Debutants on the mark 1899 – Inside-forward John ‘Sailor’ Hunter scored on his reds bow, as we lost 3-2 at Stoke in our season opener, with skipper Alex Raisbeck also on target and forward Peter Kyle also making his reds bow. Billy Maxwell bagged two of his six goals against the reds, with Jack Kennedy also scoring. 1907 - Charlie Hewitt also netted on his debut, as we started another season with a 3-1 defeat at Nottingham Forest. Enoch West struck the first of his eight goals against the reds, with Harry Green and Ted Hughes also on target. Double debutants 1972 - Keeper Frank Lane played the first of his two senior reds games, unfortunately conceding an own goal, often attributed to Alan Hinton, as we lost 2-1 at League champions Derby County, despite John Toshack putting us in front. Midfielder Peter Cormack also made his reds bow in this match. John O’Hare scored the last of his six goals past us for the home side. Ged’s double century 2002 - We were held at home by Newcastle United to a 2-2 draw in the 200th match since Gérard Houllier took sole charge. Ex-United player Dietmar Hamann struck before Michael Owen converted a penalty. However, late goals from Gary Speed and one of Alan Shearer’s eight past us levelled the match. 1953 - We also faced the Geordies, leaving St. James’ Park on the wrong end of a 4-0 scoreline, with the legendary Jackie Milburn and Vic Keeble adding to the last two of Robert Mitchell’s eight strikes against the reds. Syd’s last 1936 – We were trounced 6-2 at Portsmouth with Alf Hanson and Berry Nieuwenhuys netting our goals as inside-left Syd Roberts played his 62nd and final reds game. Fred Worrall scored one of his four goals against the reds, Jack Weddle struck the last of his five, Cliff Parker bagged two of his five and Billy Bagley also scored twice. Starting out with a point 1901 - We kicked off our season with a goalless draw at Small Heath, who were later to become known as Birmingham City. Michael on the mark again 2000 - Michael Owen scored England’s equaliser against World Champions France in their friendly encounter at the Stade de France, having come on as a substitute. Kevin Keegan was in charge of a side that also featured ex-red Steve McManaman, while Nick Barmby was winning his first cap as a reds player. Future red Nicolas Anelka appeared for the home side. The same day, Sami Hyypiä won his 34th cap in Finland’s 2-1 home defeat of Albania in a World Cup qualifier, with future red Jari Litmanen on the scoresheet. Don Hutchison won his first cap as a Sunderland player as Scotland won their qualifier in Latvia 1-0. Robbie Keane bagged his only goal while with Internazionale as ex-red Jason McAteer also struck in the Republic of Ireland’s 2-2 draw with the Netherlands in Amsterdam, with Steve Staunton also featuring. Craig Bellamy was sent off while winning his first cap as a Coventry City player as Wales lost 2-1 in Belarus. Also in international action that day were Stéphane Henchoz, Vladimír Šmicer, future reds Igor Bišcan, Jerzy Dudek and Paul Jones, and ex-reds Øyvind Leonhardsen, Jim Magilton and Gareth Roberts. Crouchie at the double 2006 - Peter Crouch bagged a brace with Steven Gerrard also on target as England thumped Andorra 5-0 in their Euro 2008 qualifier at Old Trafford, with future red Stewart Downing also in action. Luis García and future red Fernando Torres both netted for Spain in their 4-0 defeat of Liechtenstein, with Xabi Alonso also in the side. Future red Martin Škrtel struck his first goal for his country on the same day, as Slovakia thumped Cyprus 6-1 in another qualifier in Bratislava. Dirk Kuyt won his first cap as a red, playing alongside future reds Ryan Babel and John Heitinga as the Netherlands won 1-0 in Luxembourg. Meanwhile, ex-red Jari Litmanen knocked a brace past Jerzy Dudek, including a penalty, as Roy Hodgson’s Finland beat Poland 3-1 in what was the keeper’s final international as a red. Also in international action were Craig Bellamy, Steve Finnan, Sami Hyypiä, future reds Yossi Benayoun, Philipp Degen, Robbie Keane, Ragnar Klavan and Sotirios Kyrgiakos, and ex-reds Paul Jones, El-Hadji Diouf and Rigobert Song. Sadio Mané played for Senegal as they shared a goalless draw with Burkina Faso in another qualifier in Dakar on the same day, with Abel Xavier taking charge of Mozambique. 2021 – Ex-red Raheem Sterling scored as England thumped Hungary 4-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Budapest, with Dominik Szoboszlai winning his first cap as a RasenBallsport Leipzig e.V. player and Jordan Henderson and ex-red Péter Gulácsi also featuring. Federico Chiesa struck his last goal for Italy before making his loan move to Juventus permanent as they were held to a 1-1 qualifying draw by Bulgaria in Florence. James Balagizi debuted for England Under-19’s as they beat Italy 2-0 at St. George’s Park, while future red Ben Doak netted while debuting for Scotland Under-17’s in their 1-1 draw with Wales in Stirling. Future reds Luis Díaz and Wataru Endō and ex-red Christian Benteke also played for their countries that day. International bows 2016 – Future red Kostas Tsimikas debuted for Greece Under-21’s as they drew 1-1 with Albania in a European Championships qualifier in Athens. On the same day, Marko Grujić won his first cap for Serbia Under-21’s as a reds player in their 1-1 draw in another qualifier in Italy, while Diogo Jota appeared for Portugal at the same level for the first time while playing for Club Atlético de Madrid in their goalless draw with Israel. Harry Wilson also represented his country that day. 2011 – Stewart Downing won his first cap as a reds player as England won a Euro 2012 qualifier 3-0 in Bulgaria, with Raul Meireles playing for Portugal for the first time since moving to Chelsea as Portugal won 4-0 in Cyprus. Craig Bellamy featured for Wales as they beat Montenegro 2-1 in Cardiff, the first time since his return to Anfield. Sebastián Coates won his first cap as a red as Uruguay beat Ukraine 3-2 in Karkov, while future red Dejan Lovren struck his first goal for Croatia in their 3-1 qualifying win in Malta. Robbie Keane won his first cap as an LA Galaxy player as the Republic of Ireland shared a goalless draw with Slovakia in Dublin, with Yossi Benayoun playing for Israel for the first time while on loan at Arsenal in their 1-0 defeat by Greece in Tel-Aviv. Alou Diarra won his first cap as an Olympique de Marseille player as France won 2-1 in Albania. Dirk Kuyt scored as the Netherlands trounced San Marino 11-0 in Eindhoven, with future red Gini Wijnaldum netting on his debut and future reds coach John Heitinga bagging his seventh and final goal for his country, while Pepe Reina, Martin Škrtel, Luis Suárez, future reds Ragnar Klavan, Simon Mignolet and James Milner, and ex-reds Xabi Alonso, Álvaro Arbeloa, Milan Jovanović, Javier Mascherano, Nikolay Mihaylov, Daniel Sjölund, Fernando Torres and John Toshack all also represented their countries. More first caps 2010 – Michael Ngoo and Jonjo Shelvey both netted on their debuts for England Under-19’s as they beat Slovakia 2-0 in a friendly at Gresty Road, while Andre Wisdom also made his debut at this level, skippering the side for a time. Meanwhile, future red Thiago Alcântara made his bow for Spain Under-21’s as they beat the Netherlands 2-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Alicante. Captain Yossi Benayoun scored a treble, including a penalty, as he won his first cap as a Chelsea player in Israel’s 3-1 defeat of Malta in a European Championships qualifier in Tel-Aviv on the same day. Alberto in action 2002 – Future red Alberto Aquilani played for Italy Under-19’s as they lost 1-0 to Turkey. 2005 – He featured for the Under-21’s in their European Championships qualifier against Scotland in Motherwell that ended 2-2 with three players sent off in total. The match was forfeited by the home side and recorded as a 3-0 victory to Italy. Also in international action that day were Scott Carson, Michael Nardiello, John Welsh and future reds Glen Johnson, Nikolay Mihaylov and James Milner. 2011 – Aquilani won his first cap while on loan with AC Milan as Italy won a Euro 2012 qualifier 1-0 in the Faroe Islands, with future red Mario Balotelli also in action. 2012 – Sheyi Ojo and Jerome Sinclair played for England Under-17’s as they lost a friendly 1-0 to Portugal in Burton. Also on the move 1938 – Scottish centre-half Tom ‘Tiny’ Bradshaw signed for South Liverpool after four goals in 291 appearances since signing from Bury for £8,000 in January 1930. He was only with South Liverpool for three days while the reds negotiated his £600 transfer to Third Lanark. 1955 – Future reds centre-forward Dave Hickson signed for Aston Villa from Everton for £17,500, netting just once in twelve games before moving to Huddersfield Town for £16,000 two months later. 2011 – Ex-reds defender Stephen Wright signed for Hartlepool United, featuring eleven times for the Monkey Hangers. 2023 – Gini Wijnaldum signed for Al-Ettifaq. He struck seven times in 31 games in his first campaign in Saudi Arabia. Other reds games 1980 – We thumped Bradford City 4-0 in a League Cup Second Round second leg at Anfield on our way to claiming the trophy for the first time. Kenny Dalglish struck twice, with Ray Kennedy and David Johnson also scoring. 1967 – Tony Hateley and Roger Hunt struck as we won 2-0 at West Bromwich Albion. 1964 – We came from behind to beat Leeds United 2-1 in L4. Peter Thompson and Tommy Smith were both on the scoresheet. 1933 – We beat Sheffield United 3-2 at Anfield. Sam English added to a Gordon Hodgson brace after Peter Spooner had given the Blades an early lead. Jimmy Dunne bagged one of his eleven goals past us late on after Mick Killourhy had sent a spot-kick wide. Also in international action 1995 – Robbie Fowler played for England Under-21’s as they lost a European Championships qualifier 2-0 in Portugal. 1998 – Future reds Markus Babbel and Stéphane Henchoz both played in senior international friendlies, with Switzerland drawing 1-1 with FR Yugoslavia in Nis and Germany winning 2-1 in Malta.

Winning the cup 1992 - We beat Second Division Sunderland 2-0 to win our fifth FA Cup. Ian Rush scored his fifth FA Cup Final goal, to break Stan Mortensen’s record, after Michael Thomas had opened the scoring, with Dean Saunders also hitting the bar. Graeme Souness led the team out just 48 hours after leaving hospital. However, the wrong medals were presented to each team, and so the two sides had to swap them afterwards! Ray Houghton was playing his 202nd and final reds game. Youngest ever 2010 - Left-back Jack Robinson became the reds’ youngest ever player, aged sixteen years and 250 days as we were held to a goalless draw at Hull City. This was Rafael Benítez’s last game in charge, and Dirk Kuyt’s 200th game for the club, while Nabil El Zhar made his 32nd and final reds appearance. 1995 – Steven Gerrard represented the reds for the first time ever, aged fourteen, as the ‘B’ team lost 2-1 at Manchester United, with the team including many winners of the FA Youth Cup a year later. Maxi’s treble 2011 - We secured our biggest every victory at Fulham, winning 5-2 after a sparkling performance. Maxi Rodríguez scored a hat-trick, netting in his third consecutive game while Dirk Kuyt struck in his fifth appearance in a row, with Luis Suárez also on target. Skipper Jamie Carragher played his 666th reds game, to move into second place on the all-time list, only behind Ian Callaghan. A quiet day Our only other two first-class games on this day in history both ended in stalemate. 1987 - We drew 3-3 at Chelsea, with Ian Rush, Steve McMahon and John Aldridge on target in our final game of the season, as we ended nine points behind Everton in second place. Gary Gillespie made his hundredth reds appearance in this game. Future red David Speedie was amongst the scorers, with Gordon Durie netting the first of his six goals past us and John Bumstead also on target. 1988 - John Aldridge struck a spectacular overhead kick as we were held 1-1 at Anfield by Luton Town to reach ninety points in our final League game of the campaign as Steve McMahon reached a century of League games for the reds in what was our 4,000th official game. We had already clinched our seventeenth League title two weeks earlier. Nigel Spackman lined up alongside Gary Gillespie in central defence as Kenny Dalglish rested Alan Hansen ahead of the FA Cup Final, with Jan Mølby away on international duty. Unfortunately, Gillespie and Spackman collided when going for the same ball, resulting in them both taking to the Wembley turf in head bandages the following week! Before the game, the PFA’s Fair Play Trophy and a cheque for £2,000 was presented to Alan Hansen by PFA Secretary Gordon Taylor. The game was watched by 30,376 giving us an average home crowd of 39,682, the best in the division. 1973 - We were also due to play a game, but our UEFA Cup Final first leg meeting with Borussia Mönchengladbach at Anfield was postponed after only 27 minutes, due to a sodden pitch. Happy birthdays 1993 – Defender Andre Wisdom was born in Leeds. He joined the reds from Bradford City in January 2008, making 22 first-team appearances, netting on his debut at BSC Young Boys in September 2013. He left for Derby County for an initial £2m in July 2017. 1996 – Midfielder Cameron Brannagan was born in Salford. He was with the club since the age of eight, making nine senior appearances before joining Oxford United in January 2018. 1989 – Former reserves forward Michael Nardiello was born. 1987 – Elite Development Coach Aaron Briggs was born. He joined the club in July 2024, having most recently been an Assistant Coach at Vfl Wolfsburg. 1968 - Neil Ruddock was born in Wandsworth, London. He played 152 games for the reds after being signed from Tottenham Hotspur for £2.5 million, bagging twelve goals and helping us to the Coca-Cola Cup in 1995 before moving on to West Ham United for £100,000 in July 1998. 1971 - Don Hutchison was born in Gateshead. He made only sixty first-team appearances following his £175,000 capture from Hartlepool United in November 1990, netting ten times, before leaving for Upton Park for £1.5m in August 1994. 1933 – Forward Arthur Rowley was born in Fazakerley in Liverpool. He joined the reds in May 1951, failing to score in eleven outings, moving on to Wrexham in November 1954. Reds trebles 1961 - Ian St. John bagged a hat-trick on his reds debut as we lost 4-3 to Everton in the Liverpool County F.A. Senior Cup Final at Goodison Park. 1942 - Cyril Done netted a treble as we beat Chester 3-0 in a Lancashire Cup First Round second leg match to progress 6-1 on aggregate. Unfortunately, Blackburn Rovers knocked us out at Anfield at the next hurdle. Beating the Hammers 2009 - We won 3-0 at West Ham United thanks to a Steven Gerrard brace and a goal from Ryan Babel. The skipper’s second goal came when keeper Robert Green saved his penalty, although he followed in to net the rebound. His first was his hundredth reds goal from open play. The comedy moment of the game came when David Di Michele performed a laughable dive that led to a booking. Ins and outs 1900 – Scottish centre-forward Peter Kyle moved on to Leicester Fosse after failing to score in five first-team games since arriving from Clyde in May 1899. 1905 – Inside-left Dickie Morris left the reds to join Leeds City, having only struck five times in 39 outings after signing from Druids in March 1902. 1906 – Forward John Lipsham arrived from Chester, failing to score in just three reds outings, returning to Chester in 1907. 1911 – Scottish international keeper Ken Campbell signed from Cambuslang Rovers for £10. He played 142 reds games before joining Partick Thistle in April 1920. 1957 – Forward Bobby Murdoch signed as a professional, having joined as an amateur two years earlier. He struck seven times in nineteen reds games as we struggled in the Second Division. He moved on to Barrow in September 1959. Sir Roger in Italy 1964 - Roger Hunt played for a Football League representative side as they lost 1-0 to an Italian League team at the San Siro in Milan. England bosses 1999 - Kevin Keegan resigned as Manager of Fulham, soon signing up as the England team boss. He had guided the Cottagers to the Second Division title, with an impressive 101 points, in his one season in charge. 2019 – Ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper took charge of England Under-17’s for the last time as they beat Sweden 3-1 in a European Championships Finals group game in Dublin. On the same day, ex-red 2016 – Cooper faced off against ex-red Bernard Diomède in opposing dugouts as England Under-17’s as they beat France 2-0 in a European Championships Finals group game in Azerbaijan. On the same day, future red Ozan Kabak played for Turkey Under-16’s in their 2-0 friendly defeat by Spain in Portugal. Testimonial defeat 1967 - We took part in a testimonial match for George Curtis and Mick Kearns, losing 2-1 to Coventry City at Highfield Road, with Roger Hunt on target. Dads again 2006 - Steven Gerrard became the father of his second daughter, Lexie. On the same day, Robbie Fowler became a dad for the fourth time, with his first son, named Jacob. For and against England 1929 – Future reds Ernie Blenkinsop and Tom Cooper both turned out for England as they won a friendly 4-1 in France. 1942 - Reds keeper George Poland played for England as they lost 1-0 to Wales at Ninian Park in a Wartime International. 2004 – Future red Besian Idrizaj played for Austria Under-17’s as they lost 1-0 to England in a European Championships Finals group game in France. 2009 – Christopher Buchtmann featured as Germany Under-17’s thumped England 4-0 in a European Championships Finals group game in Jena, with future red Jonjo Shelvey on the losing side while winning his seventh and final cap at this level. 2011 – Brad Smith netted his only goal for England Under-17’s in their 3-0 win in a European Championships Finals group game in Serbia, with Adam Morgan also featuring. On the same day, Samed Yeşil scored the only goal of Germany’s meeting with Romania in the same competition, with fellow future red Emre Can also in action. 2014 – Future reds Joe Gomez and Dominic Solanke both represented England Under-17’s as they beat Malta 3-0 in a European Championships Finals group game in Ta’ Qali. Also on target 2017 – Dominik Szoboszlai struck twice while captaining Hungary Under-17’s as they thumped the Faroe Islands 4-0 in a European Championships Finals group game in Croatia. Fellow future red Ozan Kabak played for Turkey in the same competition in their 2-1 defeat of Italy. On their way out 1936 – Ex-reds reserves outside-left Jimmy Kelly played for the Irish Free State for the last of four times, grabbing his only two goals for them in their 5-1 friendly win in Luxembourg. 2012 – Ex-reds centre-forward Neil Mellor announced his retirement from playing, aged 29, following a serious knee injury. Avi the Olympian 1979 - Future red Avi Cohen played in Israel’s 1-1 Olympics qualifying draw against Spain in Murcia. Red tonkings 1994 - Ian Rush bagged a brace, with John Barnes, Don Hutchison and Jamie Redknapp also scoring in a 5-0 SDS Challenge Series victory over Shelbourne at Tolka Park in Dublin. 1945 - We thumped Preston North End 5-1 in a Wartime League game at Anfield, with Phil Taylor and Les Shannon both netting twice, and George Kaye bagging a penalty. First cap 2019 – Future red Melkamu Frauendorf debuted for the German Under-15’s as they lost 2-1 to the Netherlands in Drenthe. On the move 2005 - Former reserves forward Ian Armstrong was released by Port Vale after seventeen goals in 101 outings. 2011 – Future reds loanee Nuri Şahin joined Real Madrid from Borussia Dortmund for €10m. However, he only made ten senior appearances while in Spain, netting once, before returning to Dortmund. Wembley glory at last 1965 – This day finally brought the FA Cup to Anfield for the first time in our history. The game against Leeds United was goalless after ninety minutes, with full-back Gerry Byrne playing most of the match with a broken collar-bone. Roger Hunt opened the scoring in extra time, before Billy Bremner equalised for the Yorkshire side with one of his five goals past us. With five minutes remaining, “up popped the head of Ian St. John” to win the cup. Winger Peter Thompson reached a century of reds outings in this game. 1971 – Peter Thompson played his 400th game for the club as we beat Southampton 1-0 at Anfield, thanks to an Emlyn Hughes goal as we finished the League season in fourth, ahead of the FA Cup Final. 1980 - We played in the only FA Cup Semi-final to go to a third replay, which we unfortunately lost to Arsenal courtesy of a Brian Talbot goal at Highfield Road, one of his six strikes against the reds, who went on to l1999ose the Final to Second Division West Ham United. 1996 - We also faced the Gunners, holding them to a goalless Premiership draw at Highbury. This was the first time since three substitutes were permitted for League games four years previously that we did not name a keeper on the bench, with Mark Kennedy, Ian Rush and Michael Thomas getting the nod. Luis and Mo the best 2014 - Luis Suárez was named as the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year for a season in which he struck 31 times in total in 37 reds outings as we came close to claiming the League title. 2018 - Mohamed Salah won the same award, towards the end of a season in which he notched 44 times in 52 games, helping us to reach the UEFA Champions League Final in Kyiv. On our way to Athens 2007 - Jamie Carragher played his ninetieth European game in our Champions League Semi-final second leg with Chelsea at Anfield, breaking Ian Callaghan’s club record. Daniel Agger converted a cleverly-worked free-kick to take the tie into extra time, following our single goal defeat in the first meeting. Dirk Kuyt had an effort ruled out for offside, and also hit the woodwork before Pepe Reina was the hero in a penalty shoot-out that we won 4-1, saving from both Geremi and Arjen Robben. Kuyt struck our decisive fourth spot-kick. This was the first time we had faced the same team in European competition in three consecutive seasons, as well as being the third round in a row in which Bolo Zenden had come up against a former employer, following ties with Barcelona and PSV Eindhoven. Striking legends in and out 1990 - Kenny Dalglish made his 515th and final appearance in our 1-0 home defeat of Derby County, thanks to a goal from Gary Gillespie, as we were awarded our eighteenth, and most recent, League title. He was aged 39 years 58 days, a post-war club record. This game had been postponed from February. 1972 - We also faced the Rams, losing a First Division fixture 1-0 at the Baseball Ground thanks to a goal from John McGovern. 1958 – Outside-right Fred Morris joined from Mansfield Town for a £7,000 fee. He bagged fourteen goals in 48 reds games, moving on to Crewe Alexandra for £4,000 in June 1960. 1914 – Defender Ernest Peake moved on to Third Lanark. He joined the reds as a Welsh international from his hometown club Aberystwyth Town in May 1908, netting six times in 55 games. 1899 – Forward Peter Kyle arrived from Clyde for £100, failing to score in five first-team games before moving on to Leicester Fosse in May 1900. On the same day, Scottish inside-right Andrew McCowie moved on to Woolwich Arsenal after netting eleven times in 35 games since signing from Cambuslang Hibernian in October 1896. Other arrivals 1973 - Jimmy Case signed from South Liverpool for £500. Crashing out? 2019 – We lost 3-0 at Barcelona in the first leg of our UEFA Champions League Semi-final to leave our chances of reaching the Final in Madrid hanging by a thread, despite a decent performance. Ex-red Luis Suárez opened the scoring before Lionel Messi added a late brace. Gary Mac yet again 2001 - Gary McAllister scored for the fifth straight game in our 2-0 win at Bradford City as we headed towards the Champions League. Michael Owen nabbed the other goal in a game that was originally postponed the previous December. Also recently 2017 – Emre Can struck a spectacular goal, the only one of our trip to Watford. 2016 - We lost 3-1 at Swansea City, with left-back Brad Smith seeing red. André Ayew struck twice for the home side, with Jack Cork also on target, as Christian Benteke scored for the reds. 2012 – Brazilian left-back Fábio Aurélio played his 134th and last reds game as Fulham won for the first time at Anfield, so completing their first ever League double over us. A presentation was made to Brian Hall before the game, marking his retirement as Public Relations Manager, a post he had held since 1991. Martin Škrtel put through his own net as ex-reds reserve Alex Kačaniklić attempted to convert John Arne Riise’s cross for the only goal. 2011 - We beat Newcastle United 3-0 at Anfield. Maxi Rodríguez opened the scoring before Dirk Kuyt converted a penalty and Luis Suárez struck, with ex-Toon star Andy Carroll making a late cameo from the bench. Replay 86 2006 - The Replay 86 game was played at Anfield in front of 32,947 in aid of the Marina Dalglish Appeal. The two sides were representing the 1986 FA Cup Final teams, and the only goal came in the final minute, through former reds reserves striker John Durnin. Also against the Blues 1937 - Jack Balmer was on target as we were held to a 1-1 draw by Chelsea at Anfield in the final game of a League campaign that saw us finish in a disappointing eighteenth, just three points clear of relegation. Dickie Spence netted one of his six goals against the reds. On the same day, Bill Shankly was on the losing side at Wembley, as Preston North End lost 3-1 to Sunderland in the first FA Cup Final to be played in the month of May. Goals galore 1978 - King Kenny grabbed a hat-trick in our 4-0 defeat of Manchester City at Anfield, with Phil Neal adding a penalty. 1926 - Forward Tommy Reid scored both goals on his reds debut in our 2-2 home draw with Sheffield United, with outside-right Cyril Oxley playing his 34th and final reds game as we finished the season in sixth place. Harry Johnson scored two of his seven goals past us. 1999 - Less happily, Jamie Carragher scored an own goal as we came from 2-0 behind at half time to beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 at Anfield in the League, having already scored an own goal in the reverse fixture that season! Paul Ince struck with Steve McManaman netting his 66th and final reds goal after Jamie Redknapp’s spot-kick. Spurs’ Mauricio Taricco was sent off just before the break while Stig Inge Bjørnebye and Bjørn Tore Kvarme both played their final reds games, with the young Steven Gerrard instrumental in our comeback after coming off the bench at half time. Steffen Iversen had netted the other goal for the visitors. 1943 - Cyril Done struck for the fourth consecutive game, grabbing a brace as we beat Bolton Wanderers 4-0 in our Lancashire Cup Second Round second leg at Anfield, with Thomas Pearson and Jackie Campbell also on target. This game also counted towards the Wartime League. 1979 - We also faced the Trotters in a game originally postponed from three months earlier, when Ray Kennedy netted twice and David Johnson and Kenny Dalglish were also on the scoresheet in a 4-1 win in wintry conditions at Burnden Park, with the home side’s score coming from a Graeme Souness own goal. Bolton keeper Jim McDonagh said afterwards, “Liverpool are perfection. This team would have been good enough to win the 1978 World Cup!” Eleven in a row 1982 - We won 2-0 at home to Nottingham Forest, our eleventh successive League win - a joint club record with 2013/14, and tenth straight win in all competitions, a then club record. Bob off the mark 1948 – Left-half Bob Paisley struck the first of his twelve reds goals as ended the season in tenth by beating Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 at Anfield, with Jack Balmer also on target. Another trophy 1946 - We beat Everton 3-1 at Anfield to claim the Liverpool Senior Cup. Bill Jones and Harry Eastham netted for the reds, with the Blues’ Purvis putting through his own net. Jameo off 1993 - David James was dismissed at Norwich City on the hour mark with David Phillips netting the only goal of the game past Mike Hooper from the subsequent spot-kick, as he became the first substitute keeper to take the field for the reds in the Premier League, in his 73rd and final senior reds appearance. This was a vital result as we finished in sixth, three places and three points behind City who reached the UEFA Cup, which we failed to do. English reds 1964 - Roger Hunt scored in England’s 3-0 victory over ‘Young England’. 1996 - Michael Owen netted a brace for the Under-16’s as they beat Turkey 2-1 in a European Championships group game in Austria. 2002 – David Mannix and David Raven both played for England Under-17’s in their goalless draw with host nation Denmark in a European Championships Finals group game. 2012 – Ex-reds boss Roy Hodgson was appointed Manager of the senior England side. 2016 – Curtis Jones struck as England Under-15’s lost 7-5 to Croatia, with clubmates Elijah Dixon-Bonner and Bobby Duncan also featuring. 2022 – Carter Pinnington featured for England Under-15’s as they lost a friendly 3-1 to Romania. An English treble 1935 - Sam English scored a hat-trick as we beat Exeter City 3-1 in a testimonial match for former reds full-back Jimmy Gray at St. James Park. Scottish-born South African international Gray had only ever played one senior reds game, but turned out 221 times for the Grecians, helping them to finish runners up in the Third Division South in 1933. First and last caps 1985 - Michael Robinson won his first cap as a Queens Park Rangers player, and nineteenth in all, as Norway held the Republic of Ireland to a goalless draw in a World Cup qualifier in Dublin. His former clubmates Jim Beglin, Mark Lawrenson and Ronnie Whelan all also featured. Ex-red Avi Cohen and future reds John Barnes and Mark Wright all also won international caps that day. 1991 - Poland’s European Championships qualifying visit to Lansdowne Road also ended goalless. This was the twentieth meeting between the countries, with John Aldridge winning his final cap as a Real Sociedad player, and 39th in total. Ray Houghton, Steve Staunton and ex-reds reserve Kevin Sheedy also played. John Barnes, Steve Nicol, ex-red Jim Magilton and future reds Stig Inge Bjørnebye, Istvan Kozma, Øyvind Leonhardsen, Gary McAllister, Colin Pascoe, Karl-Heinz Riedle and Dean Saunders all also represented their countries on the same day. Unfortunately, we went out to Newcastle United at the next hurdle. 1975 - We also faced Arsenal, losing a top-flight encounter 2-0 at Highbury as Alan Ball netted two of his eleven goals against the reds. John Toshack reached a century of League appearances for us that day. Hunting a new record 1969 - Roger Hunt bagged the only goal of the game against Sheffield Wednesday at Anfield, taking him past Gordon Hodgson to become our all-time record scorer in the League with 234, still a club record. Setting another record 2020 - The reds beat Southampton 4-0 to Anfield to ensure that we defeated all our opponents in a top-flight League season for the first time, although the score was goalless at half time. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain opened the scoring, before Jordan Henderson netted and Mohamed Salah added a brace. This ensured we had a 22-point lead at the top of the table, the greatest ever at the end of a day of top-flight football. On the same day, former reds Assistant Manager Željko Buvac was appointed Sporting Director of Dynamo Moskva. Robbie’s return 2006 - Robbie Fowler came off the bench to make his first appearance in his second spell with the reds, shortly after Steven Gerrard had opened the scoring in our home Premiership meeting with Birmingham City. Robbie even had a late winner correctly ruled out for offside, while Daniel Agger made his reds bow in a game that was Rafael Benítez’s hundredth in charge. Damien Johnson was sent off for the visitors, who equalised through a Xabi Alonso own goal in the dying minutes to deny us a club record eleventh consecutive clean sheet. Nando off the mark 2005 - We won 2-1 at Charlton Athletic thanks to Fernando Morientes’ first reds goal and a John Arne Riise strike, as we came from behind, with ex-red Danny Murphy taking the corner that led to Shaun Bartlett’s opener. Jamie Carragher played his 241st League game for the reds, a club Premiership record, while Vladimír Šmicer came on as a late substitute for Morientes to make his first appearance of the season. Spackman sold 1989 - Nigel Spackman was sold to Queens Park Rangers for £500,000 after losing his place to Ronnie Whelan. He had made 63 first-team appearances without scoring, winning a League title medal in his one full season at Anfield. Up against the Blues 1992 - We lost 2-1 at home to Chelsea, with Ronnie Rosenthal netting for the reds after Vinnie Jones had put the visitors in front. José Bosingwa amazingly escaped punishment for an assault on Yossi Benayoun right in front of the assistant referee in stoppage time. Alf off the mark 1933 – Outside-right Alf Hanson bagged the first of his 52 reds goals as Middlesbrough won 3-1 at Anfield. George Camsell netted two of his nine goals past us, with Harold Blackmore bagging the last of his five against the reds. Forward Ted Hancock played his tenth and last reds game. Alles Gute zum Geburtstag 1972 - Christian Ziege was born in Berlin. He signed in controversial circumstances from Middlesbrough in August 2000 for £5.5m and netted twice in 32 reds games, leaving Anfield for Tottenham Hotspur after just one year having won a Worthington Cup winner’s medal. He also won the Bundesliga twice, the UEFA Cup and Serie A during his club playing career, as well as Euro ’96 with Germany. 1952 – Full-back John Webb was born in Liverpool. He joined the reds in February 1969, making it onto the first-team bench six times in 1972/73 without making a senior appearance. He moved on to Tranmere Rovers in 1974, later playing in Belgium, the Netherlands and North America. 1937 - Keeper Tony Waiters was born in Southport. He won five senior England caps in 1964 while playing for Blackpool. He left there in 1967 to take on a coaching role with the reds, but returned to playing with Burnley in 1970, playing 38 League games before becoming the Manager of Plymouth Argyle in 1972. 1886 – Full-back Harry Griffiths was born in Middlesbrough. He joined the reds in 1905 but only played six senior games before joining Chesterfield Town in June 1908. He later linked up with ex-red Maurice Parry and Alex Raisbeck at Partick Thistle. Ton up for Jim 1908 - Left-half Jim Bradley made his hundredth reds appearance as we were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield by Brighton & Hove Albion in the FA Cup Second Round, with Jack Cox heading in our equaliser late on after right-half Maurice Parry had conceded a penalty converted by Jack Hall. The visitors appealed in vain that reds keeper Sam Hardy had carried the ball over the line before scrambling it round the post. This was the first game in which Anfield’s new grandstand, where the Main Stand is today, was used. More red beginnings 1902 – Inside-forward Tommy Green made the first of his seven senior reds appearances in our goalless top-flight draw at Bury, while inside-left Bill White played for the sixth and last time. 2018 – Midfielder Curtis Jones signed for the reds as a professional. He made his senior debut in our FA Cup Third Round defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers in January 2019, netting his first reds goal to secure a derby win at Anfield at the same stage a year later. He has struck sixteen times in 133 reds games across his first six campaigns, so far helping us to claim the Premier League title and FA Community Shield. Reds farewells 2014 – Forward Tony Hateley died in Preston after a long illness. He became our record signing when he joined from Chelsea in July 1967 for £96,000 and got off to a flyer at Anfield, grabbing 27 goals in 52 appearances in his first season. Unfortunately, injuries took their toll, and he was sold to Coventry City only fourteen months after arriving at the club, after 28 goals in 56 outings in total. 1997 - Stan Collymore scored the only goal of the game at Derby County, our last ever visit to the Baseball Ground. Beating the Mancs 1919 - Harold Wadsworth bagged the only goal of the game as we beat Manchester United in a Wartime League game at Old Trafford. Heading to the final 2017 – Future red Mohamed Salah scored in a penalty shoot-out as Egypt beat Burkina Faso 4-3 on penalties after their Semi-final in Gabon ended 1-1 after extra time. Sadly, they lost to Cameroon in the Final. Internationals on target 2022 – Takumi Minamino netted as Japan beat Saudi Arabia 2-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Saitama, his last goal as a reds player, with future red Wataru Endō skippering the side. Philippe Coutinho struck as Brazil thumped Paraguay 4-0 in a qualifier in Belo Horizonte, with fellow ex-red Luis Suárez on target as Uruguay beat Venezuela 4-1 in Montevideo. Luis Díaz won his first cap as a reds player as Colombia lost a qualifier 1-0 in Argentina. Fabinho and future red Darwin Núñez both also played for their countries that day. 2019 – Future red Takumi Minamino scored as Japan lost 3-1 to Qatar in the AFC Asian Cup Final in Abu Dhabi. 2004 - Ex-red Titi Camara grabbed a late equaliser for Guinea as they held the host nation to a 1-1 draw and secured their place in the Quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations. This was to be his final goal for his country. 2015 – Kolo Touré faced ex-red Carl Medjani as Ivory Coast beat Algeria 3-1 at the same stage of this competition in Equatorial Guinea. Meanwhile, future red Naby Keïta played for Guinea as they lost 3-0 to Ghana. Future red Ozan Kabak played for Turkey Under-15’s as they beat the Czech Republic 4-2 in Side. 1998 – Future red Rigobert Song played for Cameroon as they lost a friendly 1-0 in the Ivory Coast. On the move 2021 – Two centre-halves arrived on this day, with Ozan Kabak arriving on loan from Schalke 04 on loan, and Ben Davies signing from Preston North End for £500,000, with Sepp van den Berg joining the Lilywhites on a temporary basis in exchange. Kabak played thirteen times, with Davies failing to make a senior appearance and van den Berg playing sixteen games in this initial loan. Happy birthdays 1930 - Left-half Geoff Twentyman was born in Brampton. He netted nineteen times in 184 reds games after signing for £10,000 from his hometown club Carlisle United in December 1953. He returned to Anfield as Chief Scout in 1967, a post he held for nineteen years, helping to bring players such as Ray Clemence, Alan Hansen, Steve Heighway, Phil Neal and Ian Rush to the club. He was on our books in 1933 but failed to break through to the first team. He later turned out for Bristol Rovers and Ipswich Town, as well as representing his country. 1993 – Reserves forward Krisztián Adorján was born in Budapest. He arrived from MTK Hungária in the summer of 2009, moving on to Italian side Novara Calcio in September 2014 after failing to make the first team. Daniel once more 2013 – Daniel Sturridge scored his third consecutive reds game as we thumped Norwich City 5-0 at Anfield, becoming the first red to do so in his first three games since Ray Kennedy in September 1974. Jordan Henderson, Luis Suárez and Steven Gerrard also netted, with Ryan Bennett putting through his own net. Milly off 2019 – James Milner was dismissed late on as we came from behind to beat Crystal Palace 4-3 at Anfield as Andros Townsend handed the Eagles a half-time lead. Mohamed Salah bagged a brace, with Roberto Firmino also on target and James Tomkins heading in for the visitors. Sadio Mané scored in injury time before Max Meyer bagged a final consolation. Rafael Camacho came off the bench for his second and final reds appearance. God’s despair 1994 - Robbie Fowler broke his ankle as we drew 1-1 in our rearranged FA Cup Third Round tie at Bristol City, and we lost the Anfield replay six days later. Ian Rush netted our goal at Ashton Gate. Jack’s treble 1907 - Jack Parkinson scored a hat-trick at Sunderland, with Sam Raybould and Jack Cox also on the scoresheet for the reds. Sunderland came back from 4-1 down at half-time to draw the game 5-5 as Arthur Hurdman nabbed a brace, with George Bridgett scoring one of his five goals past us. The reds felt hard done by as the referee, a last-minute replacement when the original official was caught up in fog on the way to the match, awarded the home side two penalties, both converted by Ernie Rhodes, one of which was a controversial award. Derby disappointment 2009 – Steven Gerrard skippered the club for the 250th time as we were held to a 1-1 League draw at Anfield by Everton, netting a 25-yard strike before Tim Cahill headed in a late equaliser from a free-kick, one of his five goals against the reds. We had previously been denied a clear penalty for a Phil Jagielka foul on Fernando Torres in the box. 1901 – The Blues left Anfield with a 2-1 victory, with Jack Cox netting our goal. New contract for Sami 2002 - Sami Hyypiä signed a new contract to tie him to the reds until 2005. He signed two further extensions and made 464 reds appearances in total, netting 35 times and helping us to claim the European Cup, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups, two League Cups and two UEFA Super Cups following his £2.5m bargain capture from Dutch side Willem II in May 1999. He left the club in the summer of 2009 to sign for Bayer 04 Leverkusen on a free transfer. Thumping the Canaries 1985 - Goals from John Wark, Kenny Dalglish and an Ian Rush brace sent Norwich City to a 4-0 defeat at Anfield. City went on to be relegated that season. Neil on the move 2006 - Neil Mellor joined Wigan Athletic on loan after six goals in 22 reds games. He struck in the last minutes of his debut to hand the Latics a 3-2 victory at Middlesbrough, failing to score again as he played another four times. On the same day, ex-red David Thompson also moved to the JJB Stadium on a short-term contract from Blackburn Rovers, also netting on his debut in the same game. He turned out just nine more times for the Latics, joining Portsmouth in July 2006. Meanwhile, Jon Otsemobor joined Crewe Alexandra on a free transfer from Rotherham United on the same day. He made exactly half a century of senior appearances for the Alex before joining Norwich City in June 2007. Beginning and ends 1924 - Forward Hector Lawson made his reds debut as we beat Manchester City on our first trip to their new Maine Road ground, with Harry Chambers bagging the only goal of the game. 1929 – We went down 2-0 at Leicester City, with Ernie Hine netting two of his ten goals past us as centre-forward Tommy Reid played his 55th and final reds outing. 1957 – Scottish centre-forward Peter Kyle died. He joined the reds from Clyde in May 1899, failing to score in five first-team games before moving on to Leicester Fosse a year later. 1982 – David Johnson netted his 78th and last reds goal as we won 3-1 at Barnsley in a Milk Cup Fifth Round replay. Graeme Souness and Kenny Dalglish were also on target. Another red Jones 1989 - Defender and apprentice decorator Barry Jones signed from his hometown club Prescot Cables for a £500 donation. He only ever made one senior appearance for the reds, in our 1-0 UEFA Cup defeat against Kuusysi Lahti in Finland in October 1991. Beating the Mancs 2020 – We beat Manchester United 2-0 at Anfield to extend our lead at the top of the table to sixteen points, with a game in hand. Virgil van Dijk headed in after a quarter of an hour, with Mohamed Salah finally making the victory secure with a breakaway stoppage-time strike. Cue, “and now you’re gonna believe us, we’re gonna win the League” from the Kop. 1918 - We trounced United 5-1 in a Wartime League match at Anfield. Internationals on target 2024 – Ex-red Sadio Mané was on target while captaining Senegal to a 3-1 defeat of Rigobert Song’s Cameroon in an Africa Cup of Nationals Finals group game in the Ivory Coast, with Naby Keïta playing for Guinea as they beat Gambia 1-0. Wataru Endō netted as he skippered Japan to a 2-1 defeat by Iraq in an AFC Asian Cup group game in Qatar, with ex-red Takumi Minamino also featuring. 2017 - Mané scored in a 2-0 win over Zimbabwe in the same competition in Gabon. 2007 - Future red Lucas Leiva got on the scoresheet as he skippered Brazil Under-20’s as they held Argentina to a 2-2 draw in the Sudamericano Sub-20 “Juventud de América” tournament in Paraguay. Fellow future red Emiliano Insúa was a substitute for Argentina. 2009 - Insúa captained his country in the same competition as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Venezuela in Maturín. Internationals in action 2013 – Oussama Assaidi played for Morocco as they were held to a goalless draw by Angola in an Africa Cup of Nations Finals group game in South Africa. 2015 – Ex-red Carl Medjani featured as Algeria beat South Africa 3-1 in a group game in Equatorial Guinea. 2016 – Future red Ozan Kabak played for Turkey Under-16’s in their 2-1 friendly defeat of Norway. 1988 – Ex-red Avi Cohen and future red Ronnie Rosenthal both played as Israel lost 3-2 to Belgium in a friendly in Tel-Aviv. 1997 – Future red Brad Friedel featured in the USA’s 2-0 defeat by Mexico in the US Cup in Pasadena. 2000 – Future red Fábio Aurélio played for Brazil as they drew an Olympics qualifier 1-1 with Chile. Store re-launch 2007 - The city centre club store in Williamson Square was re-launched by John Aldridge. On the same day, Steven Gerrard was named in uefa.com’s Team of the Year for 2006, a feat he repeated a year later. Stalemate at Anfield 1955 – Bury faced Stoke City at Anfield in an FA Cup Third Round Third Replay that ended 2-2. The game was staged at 2pm on a Wednesday, just two days after the previous replay at Goodison Park. The Potters eventually won a fifth meeting 3-2, with all of the encounters going to extra time, and the final winner coming in the 120th minute! Also on the move 1926 – Future reds outside-right Danny McRorie signed for Airdrieonians. He struck five times in eight League games before moving on to Stenhousemuir in July 1927. 1951 – Outside-right Billy Watkinson was sold to Accrington Stanley for £3,000. He had signed from Prescot Cables in February 1946, netting twice in 42 appearances. 1996 - Nigel Clough left Anfield for Manchester City for £1.5m, only two and a half years after he had joined from Nottingham Forest for £2.275m. He had netted nine times in 44 reds games. 2009 - Craig Bellamy joined Manchester City from West Ham United for a reported £14m after nine strikes in 26 outings for the Hammers. 2016 – Ex-reds midfielder Jermaine Pennant signed for Tampines Rovers in Singapore, netting five times in 34 games. 2017 – Pennant signed for Bury, playing seven times before moving on again at the end of the campaign. 2020 – Swedish winger Kristoffer Peterson re-joined Utrecht on loan from Tranmere Rovers, striking twice in eight games in this second spell. 2021 – Ex-reds centre-half Conor Masterson joined Swindon Town on loan from Queens Park Rangers, turning out five times for the Robins. On the same day, forward Max Woltman signed pro terms with the reds. He made his senior bow in our UEFA Champions League group game defeat of AC Milan at the San Siro in December 2021. 2023 – Forward David Amoo joined Crewe Alexandra from Stevenage on a free transfer, failing to score in seven outings before being released at the end of the season. 2024 – Midfielder James McConnell signed a new contract with the reds. He had already made three appearances off the bench, going on to help us claim the League Cup at Wembley a month later. Other reds games 2002 – Southampton held us to a 1-1 draw at Anfield with Michael Owen putting us in front before Kevin Davies grabbed one of his four goals past us. 1991 – John Barnes netted as Wimbledon left L4 with a 1-1 draw, with Warren Barton converting a late free kick as Jimmy Carter got a rare start for the reds due to injuries. 1980 – Paul Dyson headed in the only goal of our visit to Coventry City early on, as a nineteen-game unbeaten run in all competitions came to an end. 1952 – We lost 3-0 to Sunderland at Roker Park as Len Shackleton bagged two of his five goals past us before Dickie Davis scored the last of his seven. 1935 – We won 2-1 at Portsmouth, despite falling behind early on to one of Fred Worrall’s four strike against the reds. Champions of the world 2019 – Roberto Firmino struck the only goal of the FIFA Club World Cup Final in Qatar as we beat Flamengo 1-0 after extra time. We had had an injury-time penalty award overruled by VAR. Macca’s farewell and hello 1991 - Steve McMahon played his 277th and final reds game as we drew 2-2 at home with Manchester City, whom he was shortly to join, as was widely known at the time. Dean Saunders and Steve Nicol scored our goals, with David White netting two of his five goals past us, having already also bagged a brace in the reverse fixture earlier that season. Luis yet again 2013 – Skipper Luis Suárez scored in his fourth consecutive game as we beat Cardiff City 3-1 at Anfield to go top of the table, becoming the first player to score ten Premier League goals in a calendar month, beating Mark Viduka’s record for Leeds United of eight in April 2003, and the first player to score at least two goals in four Premier League games in a row. Suárez bagged a brace with Raheem Sterling also on target in the first half. Getting shuttered of Titi 2000 - Aboubakar ‘Titi’ Camara was sold to West Ham United for £2.2m. He had bagged ten goals in 37 reds games after signing from Olympique de Marseille for £2.6m in June 1999. 2002 – Future reds keeper Andy Lonergan joined Darlington on loan from Preston North End, only playing twice before getting injured. He signed from Clyde in May 1899, failing to score in five first-team games before moving on to Leicester Fosse a year later. 1984 - Irish midfielder Darren Potter was born in Liverpool. A former Liverpool schoolboys’ captain who was once with Everton, he used to attend Alsop High School, where Gérard Houllier once taught. He made seventeen senior appearances under Rafael Benítez, but moved to Wolverhampton Wanderers in January 2007 after a successful loan spell. 1948 – Forward Jimmy Nicholl died. He signed from Middlesbrough in January 1914, bagging fourteen goals in 59 outings before moving on to Wishaw Thistle in 1915. He had featured in our FA Cup Final defeat to Burnley in April 1914. Tons up 2018 – Jordan Henderson played his 300th reds game as we won 2-0 at Wolverhampton Wanderers, thanks to goals from Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk. 1963 – Ian St. John struck his fiftieth reds goal as he reached a century of League appearance in our 1-0 win at Blackpool. A goalscoring debut 1957 - Outside-right Tony McNamara scored on his reds bow as we beat Bristol City 4-3 at Anfield in a Second Division fixture. Tony Rowley bagged a brace, with Alan A’Court also on target. Johnny Watkins netted one of his four goals against the reds, with Tommy Burden and Dermot Curtis also on the scoresheet. The mighty Finn 1999 - Sami Hyypiä was named Finland’s Player of the Year for the first time, succeeding future clubmate Jari Litmanen who had won for seven straight years. Future reds reserve Daniel Sjölund was named their Youth Player of the Year on the same day. Facing the Gunners 2014 – We were held to a 2-2 draw at Anfield by Arsenal. Mathieu Debuchy equalised seconds after Philippe Coutinho had given us the lead on the stroke of half-time. Olivier Giroud put the visitors in front with one of his eight strikes past us to date, but Martin Škrtel headed in deep into stoppage time to secure a point, shortly after Fabio Borini had stupidly been sent off after a second booking. 2008 – We drew 1-1 at Arsenal, with Robbie Keane grabbing a spectacular equaliser after Robin van Persie had given the home side the lead with the first of his seven strikes against the reds. Emmanuel Adebayor was sent off for the Gunners but we could not convert our numerical superiority into victory. We were wearing a curious kit combining silver shirts with red shorts and socks. 1929 - We beat the Gunners 1-0 in a top-flight fixture at Anfield, with inside-left Archie McPherson grabbing his first reds goal. Also recently 2012 – Raheem Sterling signed a new contract with the reds, having already made 28 senior appearances at that point. On the same day, José Enrique became a father for the first time. 2011 - Charlie Adam had a penalty saved as we were held to a goalless draw at Wigan Athletic, the fourth red to suffer that fate this season. The whole team had warmed up before the match in Luis Suárez t-shirts following the FA’s decision to ban him for eight matches for alleged racial abuse the day before. Friday night live 1984 - John Wark and Ian Rush struck as we won 2-0 at Queens Park Rangers in front of the live TV cameras on a Friday night, to keep us in touch with the First Division leaders. Thumping the Villains 1946 - Jack Balmer bagged a brace with Albert Stubbins and Berry Nieuwenhuys also on the scoresheet as we beat Aston Villa 4-1 at Anfield in a top-flight meeting. Balmer was actually netting in his seventh consecutive game, in which time he had struck fifteen times in total. Former hero of both sides of Stanley Park, Fred Geary, presented the visiting side with the match ball from the 1897 FA Cup Final before the game as this had been taken home by the defeated Everton side on the day. Dickie Dorsett bagged one of his four goals against the reds. Clem in action 1974 - We lost 3-1 at Birmingham City, with Ray Clemence saving a penalty from Alan Campbell. Gordon Taylor then put the home side in front with the last of his four strikes past us before John Toshack equalised. Howard Kendall converted a spot-kick before Bob Hatton headed in one of his four goals against the reds. Management moves 2015 – Former reds First Team Coach Kevin Keen was appointed Manager of Colchester United. He left by mutual consent the following April after they were relegated to League Two. 2008 – Gary McAllister was sacked as Manager of Leeds United. He had led them into the League One Play-off Final earlier that year. 1983 - John Toshack was appointed Manager of Second Division Swansea City for the second time. However, he could only lead them to two victories in eleven games in charge this time around. Quasi on target 1985 - Peter Beardsley scored for Newcastle United as they held us to a 1-1 draw at Anfield. One of the linesmen was called Mr. Everton! Steve Nicol grabbed our goal. Other reds games 1968 – Emlyn Hughes netted the only goal of Tottenham Hotspur’s visit to Anfield. 1935 – We beat Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 in L4, with Vic Wright on the scoresheet. 1912 – We drew 2-2 with Sheffield United in L4. Jack Parkinson and Arthur Metcalf scored, with Billy Gillespie scoring the first of his seven goals against the reds, with Bob Benson converting a penalty. 1907 – We lost 3-1 at Middlesbrough with Jack Parkinson on target. On the same day, future red Vladimír Šmicer played as the Czech Republic beat Uruguay 1-0 in the Third-place play-off.
