  1. Sander’s been and gone 2001 - Sander Westerveld left for Real Sociedad in a £3.49m deal. He had kept goal for us 103 times, helping the reds to five trophies in that year. He is currently goalkeeping coach for Ajax Cape Town in South Africa. Ged the centurion 2000 - Gérard Houllier’s hundredth game in sole charge was a 1-0 win at Manchester United, our fiftieth against them in all competitions. Danny Murphy’s free-kick after Gary Neville handled the ball shortly before half time sent United to their hundredth League defeat under Sir Alex Ferguson, with Michael Owen striking the crossbar after the break. United’s Luke Chadwick was sent off late on for bringing down Vladimír Šmicer. More victories over the Mancs We have twice beaten Manchester United in the top flight at Anfield on this day in history. 1995 - Robbie Fowler netted both in a 2-0 win, including a superb free-kick at the Kop end, while his second took him to fifty League goals. He also later struck twice in that season’s 2-2 draw at Old Trafford. 1921 - Billy Lacey and Harry Chambers netted in our 2-1 victory as we came from behind. A goalscoring debut 1955 - Jimmy Melia scored a left-foot volley in front of the Kop on his reds bow as we thumped Nottingham Forest 5-2 in a Second Division fixture. Billy Liddell scored a second-half hat-trick, including his 150th goal for the club, with John Evans netting our opener. James Barrett netted one of his four goals past us, with Peter Small also on target for Forest. 1996 - We also beat Forest at Anfield when Stan Collymore struck a brace against his old club as we won 4-2. Robbie Fowler was also on target, with our other strike being a Des Lyttle own goal. Kevin Campbell struck the first of his four goals against the reds, with Stuart Pearce also netting. Youngest ever reds 2019 – We fielded the club’s youngest ever side, at an average age of nineteen years and 182 days as the senior players were in Qatar for the FIFA Cup World Cup, although this record was broken just two months later. Pedro Chirivella captained the reds for the first time as we lost our League Cup Quarter-final 5-0 at Aston Villa. Centre-back Morgan Boyes, left-back Tony Gallacher and winger Luis Longstaff played their only games for the club, with forward Jack Bearne, left-back James Norris and midfielders Isaac Christie-Davies, Leighton Clarkson and Tom Hill all also debuting with Under-23’s Coach Neil Critchley taking charge, as midfielder Herbie Kane made his second and last senior outing. On the same day, the club reached agreement to sign Japanese forward Takumi Minamino at the end of the season from Red Bull Salzburg for £7.25m. He went on to score fourteen goals in 55 outings, helping us to claim the Premier League title before moving on to AS Monaco for an initial €15m in June 2022. Debut strikes 2014 - We beat Bournemouth 3-1 in a Capital One Cup Fifth Round tie at their Goldsands Stadium, thanks to a Raheem Sterling brace and Lazar Marković’s first reds goal, with ex-Evertonian Dan Gosling on target for the home side. 2017 – We beat Bournemouth 4-0 at the renamed Vitality Stadium, with Philippe Coutinho, Dejan Lovren and Mohamed Salah all on target before the break. Roberto Firmino completed the scoring. 1997 - Michael Owen won his only Under-21’s cap, netting in England’s 4-2 play-off defeat of Greece at Carrow Road, with strike partner and future red Emile Heskey bagging a brace. Jamie Carragher also played. Unfortunately, the Greeks qualified for the European Championships Finals, 4-4 on the away goals rule. Most recently 2023 – We were held to a frustrating goalless draw at Anfield by Manchester United, with Diogo Dalot sent off for the visitors in stoppage time. Joy against the Baggies 1932 - Gordon Hodgson and Harold Barton scored as we beat West Bromwich Albion 2-0 at Anfield. 1898 - We also entertained the Baggies, when Hugh Morgan and Johnny Walker were on the scoresheet as we drew 2-2. Signing on 1919 - David Ashworth was appointed as Manager. He had previously guided Oldham Athletic from non-League into the top flight, to whom he returned in December 1922 with the reds en route to retaining the League title he had led them to the previous season. 1953 – Left-half Geoff Twentyman signed from his hometown club Carlisle United for £10,000. He netted nineteen times in 184 reds games, moving on to Ballymena United in March 1960. He returned to Anfield as Chief Scout in 1967, a post he held for nineteen years, helping to bring players such as Ray Clemence, Alan Hansen, Steve Heighway, Phil Neal and Ian Rush to the club. He died aged 74 in February 2004. Red farewells 1910 - Left-half Jim Bradley played his 185th and final reds game, as goals from Jack Parkinson and Jimmy Stewart handed us a 2-0 home win over Sheffield United as keeper Sam Hardy saved a penalty from Joe Kitchen. In fact, Bradley’s last three reds games were against the two Sheffield clubs! 1988 – Norwich City won 1-0 at Anfield thanks to a goal from Andy Townsend as midfielder Nigel Spackman appeared for the 63rd and final time. 1953 - Forward Sam Raybould died. He signed from New Brighton Tower in January 1900 for £250, scoring 130 times in 226 reds games and helping us to claim two League titles before moving on to Sunderland in May 1907. Mixed fortunes on Wearside 1938 - We won 3-2 at Roker Park thanks to goals from Bill Kinghorn and Phil Taylor and wing-half Tom Bush’s only reds strike as outside-right Berry Nieuwenhuys played his 200th League game for us. 1949 - Ken Brierley and Cyril Done netted as Sunderland beat us by the same score in another First Division encounter as centre-half Laurie Hughes played his hundredth reds game. Len Shackleton bagged the first of his five goals against the reds, with Harry Kirtley and Tommy Reynolds also on the scoresheet. Parson off the mark 1927 – Right-back Jimmy ‘Parson’ Jackson scored the first of his two reds strikes as we lost 3-1 at Tottenham Hotspur. Frank Osborne bagged the last of his four goals past us with Jack Elkes nabbing the first two of his four against the reds. Thumping the Magpies 1983 - Graeme Souness bagged a brace, including one from the spot, as we beat Notts County 5-0 at Anfield. Steve Nicol and Ian Rush were also on target, with David Hunt putting through his own net. Other reds games 1977 – Phil Neal netted the only goal of Queens Park Rangers’ visit to L4 from the spot. 1960 – We drew a Second Division fixture 2-2 at Leeds United, with Kevin Lewis and Tommy Leishman on the scoresheet. Billy Bremner bagged the first of his five goals against the reds, with Tommy Murray also scoring. 1904 – We beat Bristol City 3-1 in a Second Division encounter at Anfield. Jack Parkinson bagged a brace, with Alex Raisbeck also netting. 1892 – Blackpool left L4 having beaten the reds 2-0 in a Lancashire League match. A Fox once more 1987 - Kevin MacDonald joined his old club Leicester City on loan as he continued his comeback from a broken leg suffered in September 1986. He later returned to Anfield, but only made a further seven senior appearances before returning to Filbert Street permanently. Vlad’s Arabian night 1997 - Future red Vladimír Šmicer bagged a treble in the Czech Republic’s 6-1 thumping of the United Arab Emirates in a Confederations Cup game in Saudi Arabia. On the move 2013 – Former reserves right-winger Toni Silva signed for CSKA Sofia, having been released by Barnsley six months previously. 2020 – Hungarian midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai signed for RasenBallsport Leipzig e.V. from Red Bull Salzburg. He scored twenty goals in 91 games while helping Die Roten Bullen to clinch the DFB-Pokal twice. Rio on target 2023 – Future red Rio Ngumoha scored for England Under-16’s as they beat the Netherlands 4-3 in a friendly at St. George’s Park. Scots in action 1975 - Ex-reds reserves striker Ted MacDougall won his seventh and final cap for Scotland as a substitute in their 1-1 European Championships qualifying draw with Romania at Hampden Park. Future red Kenny Dalglish also played. 2003 - Robbie Foy won his only cap for Scotland Under-20’s as they won 2-1 in Portugal in a friendly. 2015 – Future red Ozan Kabak skippered Turkey Under-16’s in their 2-1 friendly defeat of North Macedonia in Side. Honoured 2020 - Thiago Alcântara, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Alisson Becker and Virgil van Dijk were all named in the FIFA FIFPRO Men's World 11.

    The start of a dynasty 1974 - Bob Paisley was appointed Manager, a fortnight after Bill Shankly’s resignation. He became Britain’s most successful boss, leading us to six League titles, three European Cups, UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, three League Cups and five Charity Shields in just nine years in charge. In comes Milan 2001 - Milan Baroš signed from Baník Ostrava for £3.2m, although he was not granted a work permit and allowed to come to Anfield for another five months. He bagged 27 goals in 108 reds games, before moving to Aston Villa for £6.5m in August 2005, having helped us to claim the UEFA Champions League and Worthington Cup. To the World Cup Final 1966 - Roger Hunt played in England’s 2-1 World Cup Semi-final defeat of Portugal at Wembley. He would shortly become the first red to claim football’s top honour while with the club. Double debutants 2005 - Peter Crouch and Momo Sissoko both made their reds debuts as we won 3-1 at FBK Kaunas in the first leg of our Champions League Second Round qualifier, with Jamie Carragher nabbing his first goal for more than six years! Djibril Cissé also scored with Steven Gerrard converting a penalty. Carra said, “If I'd have known I was going to score against Kaunas I would have worn a t-shirt under my Liverpool shirt with Michael’s name on it. I want to dedicate that goal to Michael Shields and all his family who are suffering so badly right now.” Another win 2020 – We came from a goal down to win 3-1 behind closed doors at Newcastle United to finish the season on a club record 99 points, eighteen points ahead of runners up Manchester City. Dwight Gayle scored after just 25 seconds, the most recent of his five goals past us, but Virgil van Dijk headed us level, with Divock Origi and Sadio Mané both on target after the break. Rafa’s first capture 2004 - Josemi signed from Málaga for £2m, becoming new boss Rafael Benítez’s first signing. He made just 35 reds appearances at right-back before joining Villarreal in exchange for Jan Kromkamp in January 2006. Wingers on the move 2006 - Jermaine Pennant signed from Birmingham City for £6.7m. He made 81 appearances, bagging three goals before joining Real Zaragoza in July 2009 after a five-month loan spell with Portsmouth. On the same day, it was announced that Paul Anderson and Scott Carson had signed new four- and five-year contracts respectively. 2012 - Paul Anderson joined Bristol City from Nottingham Forest on a free transfer, scoring three times in 23 games for the Robins before moving to Ipswich Town in a swap deal for Jay Emmanuel-Thomas a year later. Stéph on the move 2005 - Stéphane Henchoz signed for Wigan Athletic. He had made a total of 205 reds appearances, forming a rock-solid partnership with Sami Hyypiä, helping us to claim five trophies in 2001 and another League Cup two years later. He played 32 times for the Latics before rejoining Blackburn Rovers in September 2006. Birth and death 1928 - Half-back and reds skipper Johnny Wheeler was born in Crosby. He joined his cousin Ronnie Moran at Anfield when he signed from Bolton Wanderers for £9,000 in September 1956 and made 177 appearances, bagging 23 goals. One of his greatest games came in November 1956, when he netted a four-minute hat-trick against Port Vale. He was appointed player-manager of New Brighton in May 1963, but did not take up the post, becoming Assistant Trainer at Bury instead, where he stayed until 1969. 1963 – Scottish outside-right Danny McRorie died. He had bagged six goals in 35 reds games after signing from Morton for £1,500 in November 1930, moving on to Rochdale in October 1933. Justice denied 2000 - The judge in the trial of retired Chief Superintendent David Duckenfield, the police officer in charge at Hillsborough, ruled that he should not have to face a retrial, after the jury could not agree on a verdict. Off the mark 2009 - Krisztián Németh bagged a brace, his first reds goals, as we thumped a Singapore League Select XI 5-0 in their National Stadium. The other goals came from Andriy Voronin, Albert Riera and Fernando Torres. 2002 - The reds thumped a Swiss XI 5-1 at their pre-season training camp. El-Hadji Diouf and Grégory Vignal both scored their first reds goals, while Neil Mellor netted a brace in his first senior appearance. Milan Baroš added the other. Starting the right way 1968 - Roger Hunt grabbed a brace as we kicked off our pre-season campaign with a 3-1 win over Linfield in Belfast. Tony Hateley bagged the other, while Ray Clemence made an early appearance as a substitute. 1995 - Stan Collymore made his reds bow as we beat Birmingham City in the pre-season T.N.T. Inter-City Challenge Cup 1-0 at St. Andrews, thanks to an Ian Rush strike. Jari in Amsterdam 2001 - Ex-Ajax star Jari Litmanen struck the only goal of the game for us against Rafael Benítez’s Valencia to send the Amsterdam ArenA crowd wild. It was a brilliant volley after a fifty-yard run and superb cross from Bernard Diomède. Leverkusen for the first time 1991 - We encountered Bayer 04 Leverkusen for the first time, holding them to a goalless draw in their Ulrich-Haberland-Stadion in a pre-season friendly. Spectators were allowed in for free to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of the Bayer company moving to Leverkusen. Off to a bad start 1994 - We kicked off our pre-season campaign by going down 4-1 at First Division Bolton Wanderers, with Ian Rush grabbing our late consolation. Defenders signing on 2021 – Right-back Conor Bradley signed a new contract. He has so far made five senior reds appearances. On the same day, left-back Yasser Larouci joined French side Troyes, after being released by the reds after just two senior outings. 2022 – Left-back Luke Chambers renewed his deal with the reds, making it onto the first-team bench twice in the following campaign. Taking home the bacon 1987 - The reds beat Danish side Aalborg Chang 4-0 in a friendly to celebrate their 75th anniversary. John Aldridge grabbed a brace, including one from the spot, while John Barnes netted for the second consecutive game. The scoring was completed by Ronnie Whelan. Other foreign friendlies 2018 – We beat Manchester City 2-1 in the International Champions Cup in New Jersey. Mohamed Salah equalised a minute after Leroy Sané had given City the lead, with Sadio Mané converting an injury time penalty to hand us victory. We have twice faced Linfield at Windsor Park on this day in history. 1969 - Emlyn Hughes and Ron Yeats netted as we won 2-1. 1997 - We won by the same score, with Michael Owen grabbing a brace. 1992 - Dean Saunders was on target from the spot as we lost 2-1 to AS Monaco in the Tournoi de Paris at the Parc des Princes. Keepers moving 2006 - Sander Westerveld returned to Spain to join UD Almería, after brief spells back in England with Portsmouth and Everton. He made 33 League appearances in his one season there, as they gained promotion to the top flight. On the same day, former reserves custodian Ian Dunbavin joined Accrington Stanley on a free transfer from Halifax Town. 2008 - Brad Friedel joined Aston Villa from Blackburn Rovers, after 356 games for the Ewood Park outfit. He played 131 times for the Villains before moving to Tottenham Hotspur on a free transfer in June 2011. Off on loan again 2004 - Alou Diarra joined Racing Club de Lens on loan, having spent the previous two seasons with Le Havre AC and Bastia. He joined Lens permanently in June 2005 after netting twice in 34 League games during his loan spell. 2017 - Young Spanish midfielder Pedro Chirivella joined Willem II on loan, failing to score in 35 outings for the Dutch side. Alberto the champion 2003 – Alberto Aquilani won his sixteenth and last cap for Italy Under-19’s as they beat Portugal 2-0 to clinch the European Championships at this level in Liechtenstein. 2005 – Future red David Martin was in goal as England Under-19’s beat Serbia & Montenegro 3-1 in Northern Ireland to reach the Final of the same competition. 2006 - Reds right-back Antonio Barragán played as Spain Under-19’s thumped Austria 5-0 in Poland to reach the Final of the European Championships. 2018 – Adam Lewis played his sixth and last game for England Under-19’s in their 3-0 defeat by Norway in the European Championships Finals in Finland. On the same day, ex-red Bernard Diomède took charge of France as they lost 2-0 to Italy in the same tournament. 2017 – Diomède again managed France Under-19’s, this time to a 2-1 friendly defeat by DR Congo. 2002 - John Welsh, Jon Otsemobor and future reds Glen Johnson represented England Under-19’s as they lost 3-2 to Republic of Ireland in a European Championship Finals group game in Norway, who included Michael Foley-Sheridan, while future red Jermaine Pennant won his fifth and final cap at this level. Also on the move 1997 – Robbie Keane signed for Wolverhampton Wanderers. He grabbed 29 goals in 88 outings before moving to Coventry City for £6m in August 1999. 1996 - Gary McAllister joined Coventry City from Leeds United in a £3m deal. He spent four years at Highfield Road before his shock move to the reds, netting 26 times in 150 appearances. 1963 - Tony Hateley moved to Aston Villa for £22,000 from Notts County, netting 86 times in 148 games before moving to Chelsea for £100,000 in October 1966, from where he joined the reds. 1982 - Paul Walsh joined Luton Town from Charlton Athletic for £400,000. He struck 28 times in 89 games in his two years with the Hatters as they struggled in the top flight, before moving to Anfield in May 1984 for £700,000. 2007 - Don Hutchison signed for Luton Town, having been released by Coventry City the month before. He bagged just one goal in 26 outings for the Hatters. Olympian reds 2012 – Craig Bellamy netted for Great Britain as they drew 1-1 with Senegal in a group game at the Olympics at Old Trafford, with future reds Joe Allen, Steven Caulker, Sadio Mané and Daniel Sturridge also in action. Later that day in the same stadium, Luis Suárez skippered Uruguay to a 2-1 defeat of the United Arab Emirates, with Sebastián Coates also featuring. Future red Mohamed Salah also featured in the Olympics that day, scoring as Egypt lost 3-2 to Brazil in Cardiff. 2008 – Ryan Babel scored for a Netherlands Olympic XI as they beat Cameroon 2-0 in an ING Cup match in Hong Kong. Also in international action 1997 – Future red Haukur Ingi Guðnason featured for Iceland Under-19’s as they lost 1-0 to Portugal in a European Championship Finals group game in his homeland.

    Luis the champion 2011 – Luis Suárez was on target as Uruguay beat Paraguay 3-0 in the Copa América Final in Buenos Aires, with future red Sebastián Coates winning his fifth and last cap as a Nacional player. Jordan the best 2020 – Club captain Jordan Henderson was named Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year, having just lifted the reds’ first League title since 1990, as well as leading the Premier League captains’ response to the COVID-19 pandemic. On the same day, midfielder Leighton Clarkson signed a new contract, having already featured for the first-team twice. In comes David 2008 – Forward David N’Gog signed from Paris Saint-Germain for £1.5m. He struck nineteen times in 94 reds outings, although he only started on 41 of those occasions. He was sold to Bolton Wanderers for £4m in August 2011. Treble debutants 1999 - Dietmar Hamann, Sami Hyypiä and goalscorer Vladimír Šmicer all played their first reds games as we beat Feyenoord 2-0 to claim the Carlsberg Belfast Challenge trophy. The other goal came from Titi Camara, with his second reds strike. Happy birthday Harry 1870 - Keeper Harry Storer was born in Butterley, Derbyshire. He signed from Woolwich Arsenal for £75 in December 1895, taking over from the versatile Matt McQueen between our sticks. He made a total of 121 reds appearances before retiring in 1901. Unfortunately, he died in April 1908 aged just 37. Justice denied 2000 - The jury in the Hillsborough disaster trial was discharged after failing to reach a verdict on manslaughter charges against retired Chief Superintendent David Duckenfield, the police officer in charge on the day. The jury spent 25 hours deliberating the charges, but were unable to come to an agreement. The judge eventually ruled against a retrial. Reds in the Far East 2015 – Midfielder Pedro Chirivella, centre-back Daniel Cleary and winger Sheyi Ojo all made their first senior appearances as we were held to a 1-1 draw by a Malaysia XI in Kuala Lumpur. Jordon Ibe was on target for the reds. 2007 - We beat South China Athletic Association 3-1 in Hong Kong in the Semi-final of the Barclays Asia Trophy. John Arne Riise and Daniel Agger were on target, with Xabi Alonso converting a penalty. 2003 - Patrice Luzi and Zak Whitbread both made their senior reds debuts as we beat the Thailand national side 3-1 in the Rajamangala National Stadium in Bangkok. Emile Heskey added to a Vladimír Šmicer brace in a game billed as a GSM Advance Nokia Exclusive Match. Reds in Australia 2013 – We played our first ever game in Australia with more than 95,000 fans at the Melbourne Cricket Ground to see Steven Gerrard and Iago Aspas net in a 2-0 defeat of Melbourne Victory. More reds starting out 2023 – Brazilian keeper Marcelo Pitaluga played his only reds game as we drew 4-4 at SpVgg Greuther Fürth behind closed doors. Luis Díaz scored in the first half, with Darwin Núñez adding a second-half brace before Mohamed Salah also struck. 2019 – Dutch centre-half Sepp van den Berg featured for the first team for the first time as we drew 2-2 with Sporting Clube de Portugal to share the Western Union Cup in the Yankee Stadium in New York. Future Red Devil Bruno Fernandes opened the scoring, but Divock Origi and Gini Wijnaldum both netted to hand us a half-time lead, but Wendel levelled matters after the break. 2010 - Milan Jovanović played his first reds game as we lost 1-0 at 1. FC Kaiserslautern in the Fritz-Walter-Stadion. Charnock impresses 1996 - Midfielder Phil Charnock scored the only goal of the game as we beat Crewe Alexandra in a pre-season friendly at Gresty Road. He was to join the Alex on a free transfer just five months later. 1998 - The reds kicked off another pre-season campaign at Crewe, with both Sean Dundee and Vegard Heggem making their reds bows. We won 3-0, with goals from Danny Murphy, Dominic Matteo and Bjørn Tore Kvarme coming in a three-minute flurry. Czech mates 2001 - It was confirmed that the reds were about to secure the signature of young Czech striking sensation Milan Baroš from Baník Ostrava. The deal was finally completed in December of that year. 2002 – The reds announced that Vladimír Šmicer had agreed an extension to his contract that would keep him at Anfield until 2005. He then left the club to join Girondins de Bordeaux, although he returned to his homeland with SK Slavia Praha in July 2007. Famous Emlyn 2008 - It was announced that Emlyn Hughes was to be inducted into the National Football Museum’s Hall of Fame later in the year, joining the other former reds players John Barnes, Peter Beardsley, Kenny Dalglish, Alan Hansen, Roger Hunt, Kevin Keegan, Ian Rush and Graeme Souness who had already been included. Dani on target 2010 – Dani Pacheco netted as Spain Under-19’s beat Italy 3-0 in a European Championships Finals group game in France, with Fabio Borini winning his ninth and last cap at this level and fellow future red Thiago Alcântara also in action. Meanwhile, future reds Steven Caulker and Nathaniel Clyne both played in England’s 1-1 draw with the host nation in the same competition. Youngsters battling for the final 2007 - Future reds Mikel San José and Damien Plessis faced each other in the Semi-final of the Under-19 European Championships in Austria. The game ended goalless even after extra time, with Spain eventually beating France 4-2 on penalties, with both of our boys converting their spot-kicks. On the move 2021 – Harry Wilson was sold to Fulham for a reported £12m after a successful loan spell. He made his reds bow in January 2017 in our FA Cup Third Round replay win at Plymouth Argyle, but only made one further first-team appearance. 2018 – Keeper Shamal George joined Tranmere Rovers on loan, only making three senior appearances during the season. First and last caps 2002 – Jon Otsemobor and future reds coach Gary O’Neil both played for England Under-19’s as they drew 1-1 with Belgium in a European Championship Finals group game in Norway, with future reds Glen Johnson and Jermaine Pennant also featuring. 2018 - Jarell Quansah debuted for England Under-18’s in their goalless friendly draw in Croatia. Brian’s farewell 2015 – The funeral of Brian Hall took place at St Lawrence’s Church in Longridge, Lancashire. He signed for the reds in July 1968 fresh from graduating university, and scored 21 goals in 224 games, helping us to claim a League title, UEFA Cup, FA Cup and FA Charity Shield. His most memorable moment came when he bagged his first reds goal, the FA Cup Semi-final winner against Everton at Old Trafford in March 1971, also scoring at the same stage against Leicester City three years later. He moved on to Plymouth Argyle in July 1976, later finishing his playing career with Burnley, but he returned to Anfield in 1991 to take up the post of Public Relations Manager, a position he held until retiring in 2012. Also in international action 1988 – Future red Stig Inge Bjørnebye played for Norway Under-18’s as they drew 1-1 with Denmark in a tournament in the Czech Republic. 1997 – Future red Haukur Ingi Guðnason featured for Iceland Under-19’s in their 1-1 draw with Spain in the European Championship Finals in his homeland. 2017 – Ex-red Bernard Diomède took charge of France Under-19’s as they beat Quebec 3-0.

    Shanks departs 1974 - Bill Shankly resigned as Manager after fifteen years in charge, leaving reds fans bemused and shocked. He had led us to three League titles, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups and the Second Division championship. His final significant act as boss was to sign Arsenal forward Ray Kennedy for a club record fee of £180,000, announced the very same day. Razor went on to net 72 times in 393 reds games, helping us to claim six League titles, three European Cups, UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, League Cup and three FA Charity Shields before joining John Toshack’s Swansea City in January 1982. The Wright signing 1991 - Mark Wright arrived from Derby County for £2.2m. With Alan Hansen retired, Glenn Hysén soon to go and Gary Gillespie moving on to Celtic, we were in dire need of a quality centre-back, and Wright was drafted in after his impressive displays for England at the 1990 World Cup. He notched nine times in 210 reds appearances and lifted the FA Cup at Wembley in 1992 before retiring from playing in August 1998. Yossi signs on 2007 - Yossi Benayoun signed from West Ham United for £5m. He bagged 29 goals in 134 reds games, including hat-tricks against Beşiktaş JK, Havant & Waterlooville and Burnley, leaving for Chelsea for the same fee in July 2010. On the same day, second string winger Adam Hammill joined Southampton on loan. He made 28 appearances for the Saints that season, half of them from off the bench, without getting on the scoresheet. Meanwhile, ex-red Vladimír Šmicer signed for SK Slavia Praha. He helped his new club won their first title in twelve years, with Vlad once again suffering with injuries as he struck five times in 23 League games before retiring in May 2010. Heading off 2005 - Grégory Vignal signed for Portsmouth after just twenty senior reds games. He played seventeen times for Pompey, before moving on to Racing Club de Lens in May 2006. 2013 – Suso signed for Unión Deportiva Almería on loan. He scored three goals in 35 games, as well as providing nine assists. 2022 – Centre-half Tom Clayton left the reds to sign for Swindon Town, netting once in 35 outings during his first campaign with the Robins. Happy birthdays 1958 - Former reds forward Michael Robinson was born in Leicester. Joe Fagan brought the Irish international to Anfield in August 1983 from Brighton & Hove Albion for £200,000. In his first season at the club he won the League title and European Cup, bagging a total of thirteen goals in 52 games before moving to Queens Park Rangers for £100,000 in December 1984. 1979 - Midfielder Danny Williams was born in Wrexham. He never broke through to the first team at Anfield and signed for his hometown club on a free transfer in March 1999. Best ever Aussie 2012 – Ex-reds left-winger Harry Kewell was named as Australia’s greatest ever player in a vote by Australian fans, players and media, having struck seventeen times in 58 senior internationals. He signed from Leeds United for £5m in July 2003, but his time at Anfield was somewhat disappointing due to a series of niggling injuries, as he bagged sixteen goals in 139 reds games before moving to Galatasaray as his contract expired in July 2008. Debutants galore 2008 - Keeper Diego Cavalieri, right-back Philipp Degen, centre-half Martin Kelly and forward Dani Pacheco all played their first reds games, as Yossi Benayoun bagged the only goal of our opening pre-season friendly at Tranmere Rovers. 2017 – Midfielder Pedro Chirivella struck his first reds goal as we thumped Tranmere Rovers 4-0 in our opening pre-season friendly at Prenton Park, with Marko Grujic also scoring as James Milner and Ben Woodburn both converted penalties. Keeper Kamil Grabara and forward Dominic Solanke both made their first senior appearances. 2022 – Midfielder Stefan Bajcetic, forward Fábio Carvalho, left-back Luke Chambers, forward Bobby Clark, right-back Isaac Mabaya and forward Darwin Núñez all appeared for the first time as we were thumped 4-0 by Manchester United in the Bangkok Century Cup in the Thai capital. On the world stage 2014 – Future red Gini Wijnaldum struck for the Netherlands as they beat host nation Brazil 3-0 in the World Cup Third Place Play-off in Brasilia, with ex-red Dirk Kuyt also featuring. 2007 - Young reds left-back Emiliano Insúa played for Argentina Under-20’s as they beat Poland 3-1 in Toronto to reach the Quarter-finals of the World Championship Finals. 1998 – Future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel won his 101st and final cap for Brazil in their 3-0 defeat by France in the World Cup Final in the Stade de France. 1989 – Taffarel also played as Brazil beat Argentina 2-0 in a Copa América final round game in Rio de Janeiro. More arrivals 2002 - Bruno Cheyrou was confirmed as a reds player after receiving international clearance, joining from Lille OSC Métropole for £3.7m. He struck five times in 48 reds games before moving to Stade Rennais in June 2006, after previous loan spells with Olympique de Marseille and Girondins de Bordeaux. 2009 – Reserves left-back Chris Mavinga signed from Paris Saint-Germain. He failed to make the first team, being sold to Stade Rennais for £1m in July 2011. Mixed Euro fortunes 2012 - Suso was on the winning side as Spain Under-19’s beat France on penalties to reach the European Championships Final in Estonia. On the same day, Jack Robinson featured as England lost out to Greece at the same stage. 2015 – Future red Kostas Tsimikas played for Greece Under-19’s in their 2-0 home defeat by France in a group encounter. 2016 – Future red Dominic Solanke scored for England Under-19’s as they beat France 2-1 in a group game in Germany. Sheyi Ojo and Jordan Rossiter both also featured. Bowyer on his way 2002 - It was announced that a fee had been agreed with Leeds United for the controversial capture of midfielder Lee Bowyer. He was expected to sign on at Anfield the following week, although the deal fell through after Gérard Houllier grew uncomfortable with the player’s attitude and level of commitment to Liverpool. Red learnings 2000 - Liverpool’s ground-breaking Study Support centre in the Kop stand was officially opened by Professor Michael Barber, Head of the Government’s Standards & Effectiveness Unit for Education.     Our first European triumph 1973 - We lost 2-0 at Borussia Mönchengladbach with Jupp Heynckes getting both goals inside ten first-half minutes. However, that was enough to secure the UEFA Cup for the first time, as we had won the first leg 3-0 at Anfield two weeks before. We therefore became the first English side to claim the League title and a European trophy in the same season. Athens despair 2007 - We lost 2-1 to AC Milan in the Champions League Final in Athens thanks to a Pippo Inzaghi brace, with Bolo Zenden playing his 47th and final reds game. Dirk Kuyt headed our late consolation, his first goal in Europe for us. Keeping on track for a title showdown 1989 - Ray Houghton netted a brace, with John Aldridge, Ian Rush and John Barnes also on target as we beat West Ham United 5-1 at Anfield, our 24th consecutive game without defeat, just three days after our emotional FA Cup Final win, to keep us on course for our second double in four years. The FA Cup was on display on a table on the pitch before the game. However, the League was to be cruelly snatched from our grasp by Arsenal in the very last kick of the season. 1985 - Our only other first-class game on this day saw John Wark miss a penalty as we lost at Everton. Paul Wilkinson bagged the only goal of the game. Uncle Joe announced 1983 – The appointment of Joe Fagan as Bob Paisley’s replacement as Manager was announced, although he did not take over until 1st July. In his first season as boss, he led the club to a unique treble of League, European Cup and League Cup, retiring just a year later. He remains the only Scouser to date to hold the position on a permanent basis. 2022 – It was revealed that Fábio Carvalho would sign from Fulham for an initial £5m on 1st July. Births and death 1997 - Centre-half Joe Gomez was born in Catford, south-east London. He signed from Charlton Athletic for £3.5m in June 2015, making 224 senior appearances up to his 27th birthday, without scoring as he helped us to claim the League title, UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup and League Cup. On the same day, Spanish midfielder Pedro Chirivella was born in Valencia. He signed from his hometown club in July 2013, playing eleven first-team games before moving on to Nantes in July 2020, captaining the side in our League Cup thumping at Aston Villa in December 2019. 1996 - Keeper Ryan Fulton was born in Burnley. He signed pro terms in the summer of 2013, making his first senior appearance in our friendly at Swindon Town in August 2015, moving on to Hamilton Academical in July 2017. 1955 – Outside-right Fred Staniforth died. An obscure international 1987 - Young reds midfielder Ken de Mange made his senior international debut as a substitute for the Republic of Ireland alongside clubmates John Aldridge and Ronnie Whelan, as they beat Brazil 1-0 in a Rous Cup game at Lansdowne Road. He never made a first team appearance in his two seasons with the reds, before moving on to Leeds United. On the same day, Peter Beardsley and Mark Wright both played as England were held to a goalless draw by Scotland in the same competition at Hampden Park. It was Beardsley’s last cap as a Newcastle United player, and Wright’s final one while with Southampton. A treble for Albert 1948 - Albert Stubbins bagged a hat-trick as we beat a Philadelphia Select side 5-2 in a friendly on our post-season tour. Jack Balmer and Billy Liddell also netted. Rush for his country for the last time 1994 - Ian Rush grabbed his final goal for Wales as they won 2-1 in a friendly in Estonia. He netted 28 goals in his 73 internationals, a Welsh record. 1980 - He also represented his country in their 1-0 British International Championships defeat by Northern Ireland in Cardiff, alongside ex-red Joey Jones. Nigel’s debut 1989 - Future red Nigel Clough won his first full international cap as England were held to a goalless draw by Chile in a Rous Cup game at Wembley. 2001 – Future reds keeper Brad Jones won his only cap at Under-20’s level as Australia thumped Guam 6-0 in the East Asian Games in Japan. Larry for England 1972 - Larry Lloyd won his third and final England cap as a red, and his last for his country for eight years. Emlyn Hughes also played as Northern Ireland won 1-0 at Wembley in the British International Championships. Barmby’s brace 1996 - Future red Nick Barmby bagged a brace as England beat China 3-0 in a friendly in Beijing. Ex-red Peter Beardsley won his 59th and final cap in this game, while Robbie Fowler, Steve McManaman and Jamie Redknapp all also featured. A French triumph 1956 - We thumped French outfit Racing Club Franc-Comtois 8-1 in Besançon. Billy Liddell bagged a brace, with Alan A’Court, Louis Bimpson, John Evans, Brian Jackson and Jimmy Melia all adding to an own goal. The kids done well 1963 – Tommy Smith captained the reds to a 3-1 victory in the first leg of our first ever FA Youth Cup Final at Anfield. Unfortunately, we crashed 5-2 in controversial circumstances in the return match two days later. Drawing at sea 1935 – We drew 2-2 with Victoria on Gran Canaria, with Vic Wright and Fred Howe netting. The reds were introduced to Miss Spain before the match! On the way out 2005 - It was announced that Paul Harrison, Patrice Luzi, Jon Otsemobor, Richie Partridge and Mark Smyth would all be leaving the club. They had only managed eleven first-team outings between them. 1997 - Roy Hodgson resigned as Manager of Internazionale, with two games remaining of the Serie A campaign and the club sitting in third place. This came two days after their UEFA Cup Final defeat to Schalke 04 on penalties, when he was pelted with coins and cigarette lighters by fans at the San Siro. 2011 – Ex-reds defender David Raven was released by Shrewsbury Town after 28 games for the Shrews. 2012 – Emile Heskey was released by Aston Villa after fifteen strikes in 111 outings. On the same day, keeper Chris Kirkland signed for Sheffield Wednesday. 2014 – Forward Michael Ngoo was released by the reds, having not made the breakthrough. On the same day, John Arne Riise was let go by Fulham after failing to score in exactly a century of games for the Cottagers. 1928 – Future reds outside-right Danny McRorie joined Morton after just three months with Alloa Athletic. He struck 51 times in 76 League games before moving to Anfield for £1,500 in November 1930. In charge 2006 - Nigel Spackman was appointed Manager of Millwall. He only remained in the post for four months before being sacked. 2009 – John Barnes led Jamaica to a 2-2 draw with Haiti in a friendly in Fort Lauderdale. Future red Fabio Borini featured for Italy Under-19’s on the same day, as they beat Northern Ireland 3-2 in a friendly in Udine. Penalty shoot-out despair 1996 - Future red Jari Litmanen scored for Ajax in the UEFA Champions League Final as their match with Juventus ended 1-1 in the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. The Dutch outfit lost the penalty shoot-out 4-2, with Jari again on target from the spot. 2001 - Fellow future red Mauricio Pellegrino saw his decisive penalty saved by Oliver Kahn to hand Bayern München the UEFA Champions League as Valencia lost their shoot-out 5-4 in Milan, after the match had ended 1-1. Irish beginnings and end 2007 - Ex-red Darren Potter made his senior debut for the Republic of Ireland, with Steve Staunton leading his side to a 1-1 friendly draw with Ecuador in the Giants Stadium in New Jersey. 1998 - Mark Kennedy won his first cap as a Wimbledon player, and eighteenth in total, as the Irish were held to a goalless draw at Lansdowne Road by Mexico. Phil Babb and future red Robbie Keane also played. 1939 – Ex-reds reserves centre-half Matt O’Mahoney won his sixth and final Irish cap as they held Germany to a 1-1 draw in a friendly in Bremen. 2014 - Tiago Ilori scored his only goal for Portugal Under-21’s, the only goal of their European Championships qualifier in North Macedonia.     Farewell to a legend 1978 - Ian Callaghan made his 640th and final League appearance, almost eighteen years after his debut. Unfortunately, this came in a 1-0 reverse at Coventry City. His final ever reds appearance came eight weeks later, in our European Cup Semi-final first leg at Borussia Mönchengladbach. Tons up 2023 – Mohamed Salah made his 200th League appearance for the reds as we lost 3-0 at Wolverhampton Wanderers. We fell behind early when Hwang Hee-chan’s cross deflected off Joël Matip. Craig Dawson then netted on his debut, with Rúben Neves on target after the break. 2015 – Steven Gerrard played his 700th reds game as we came from behind to win 2-1 at Bolton Wanderers in our FA Cup Fourth Round replay. Eiður Guðjohnsen opened the scoring from the spot after an hour, the last of his four goals against us, before Neil Danns was sent off for the Trotters. However, Raheem Sterling and Philippe Coutinho both struck late on past future reds keeper Andy Lonergan to send us through. We made it as far as Wembley Semi-final that season. 1920 – We beat Bolton Wanderers 2-0 in a top-flight match at Anfield that also counted towards the Lancashire Senior Cup, with inside-forward Harry Lewis bagging a brace. 1933 - We were held to a 3-3 draw at Burnden Park with Harold Taylor netting his first reds goal. Harold Barton also scored with Bob Done converting a spot-kick. Jack Milsom struck one of his seven goals past the reds, with Ray Westwood nabbing one of his nine and Willie Cook also on target. Signing on 1992 - István Kozma was signed from Dunfermline Athletic for £300,000. He was one of Graeme Souness’s least successful signings, making just ten first-team appearances in two seasons at Anfield, before returning to his native Hungary in June 1993. 1921 – Keeper Frank Mitchell signed from Everton for £1,250. He played eighteen times before joining Tranmere Rovers in June 1923 after failing to permanently displace the great Elisha Scott. Dismissed 2024 - Ibrahima Konaté was sent off as we lost 3-1 at Arsenal, with Thiago Alcântara coming off the bench for his 98th and final reds appearance. Bukayo Saka put the Gunners ahead with one of his four goals past us to date, but we levelled on the stroke of half time when Gabriel put through his own net. Gabriel Martinelli netted the most recent of his five against us after a calamitous mix-up between Alisson Becker and Virgil van Dijk, before Konaté was dismissed late on. Leandro Trossard then struck the latest of his six past the reds in stoppage time. 1995 - A Robbie Fowler goal gave us a 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest, our most recent game on this day. Phil Babb saw red for a professional foul on Steve Stone. Future red Stan Collymore had opened the scoring with the first of his three goals against us. 1925 - We also travelled to the City Ground, when Jock McNab grabbed the only goal of the game. Youngsters see off the Shrews 2020 – Ro-Shaun Williams diverted a Neco Williams cross into his own net for the only goal of the game as the youngest ever side in the club’s history, aged nineteen years and 102 days, beat League One side Shrewsbury Town in our FA Cup Fourth Round replay at Anfield. Under-23’s Coach Neil Critchley took charge of a team captained by Curtis Jones, becoming our youngest ever skipper at the age of nineteen and five days, with the first team taking the inaugural Premier League winter break. Midfielders Jake Cain and Elijah Dixon-Bonner and forward Joe Hardy all debuted with left-back Adam Lewis and forward Liam Millar making their only senior appearances, as defenders Ki-Jana Hoever and Sepp van den Berg played their fourth and last reds games and midfielder Pedro Chirivella turned out for the eleventh and final time. Stalemates galore This day has proven to be a day of draws in our history, with nine of our 22 first-class matches ending in stalemate, including four of the last seven. 2019 – We were held 1-1 by West Ham United at the London Stadium. Sadio Mané opened the scoring, with Michail Antonio equalising inside half an hour, one of his six goals past us to date. This cut our lead at the top of the table to three points. 1984 - Our game at Sunderland ended goalless. 1967 - We also drew there, with Ron Yeats and Peter Thompson netting. John O’Hare struck the first of his six goals past us, with Bobby Kerr also scoring. 1989 - Goals from strike partners John Aldridge and Ian Rush helped us to a share of the points at Newcastle United. 1961 - Our most recent victory on this day was a 3-2 Second Division win at Sc***horpe United. Kevin Lewis, Jimmy Melia and Tommy Leishman were on target for the reds with Joe Bonson bagging his fifth and last goal against us and Barrie Thomas also netting. Derby despair 1939 - We lost the Anfield derby 3-0, with Tommy Lawton bagging two of his six goals past us to add to Stan Bentham’s goal. This win put the Blues back on top of the table, as they went on to claim the title for the fifth time that season. 2009 – Steven Gerrard had to go off injured after a quarter of an hour, with Lucas Leiva sent off in the second half as we went on to lose 1-0 at Goodison in our FA Cup Fourth Round Replay after extra time. Young substitute Dan Gosling bagged the winner with just two minutes remaining. We have also faced the Blues two more times in FA Cup action on this day in history, with Jack Parkinson on target in both encounters. 1905 - We were held to a 1-1 draw at Anfield in a First Round tie and were then unfortunately knocked out in the replay. 1911 - We lost 2-1 in the Second Round at Goodison Park with Sandy Young grabbing the last two of his twelve derby goals. Also recently 2017 – We lost 2-0 at Hull City’s KCOM Stadium, thanks to goals from Alfred N’Diaye and future Blue Oumar Niasse. 2018 – Mohamed Salah bagged a brace as we were held to a 2-2 draw at Anfield by Tottenham Hotspur. We took the lead early on, holding this until ten minutes from time when Victor Wanyama equalised. Loris Karius saved a penalty from Harry Kane. Salah gave us a stoppage-time lead, but there was still time for Kane to convert a spot-kick, one of his nine goals past us to date. God on the move 2009 - Robbie Fowler signed for North Queensland Fury, who play in the Australian A-League. He bagged nine goals in 26 outings before moving on to Perth Glory. Red debuts 1928 - We suffered our first home League defeat to West Ham United when Dick Edmed was on target from the spot as we lost 3-1, with forward Bob Clark making his debut. Jimmy Ruffell bagged two of his four strikes past the reds, with Vic Watson nabbing one of his nine goals against us. 1954 - Forward Derek Brownbill was born in Liverpool. He only made one senior reds appearance, in a 1-1 draw at Birmingham City in September 1973, when he was replaced by our goalscorer, Brian Hall. After leaving Anfield in February 1975, he played more than 140 League games for Port Vale and Wigan Athletic, before emigrating to the USA to play for Cleveland Cobras. Mixed fortunes against the Potters We twice entertained Stoke on this day at the end of the nineteenth century. 1893 - We lost a friendly meeting 2-1, with John Miller on target. 1899 – Bill Goldie netted the only goal of our First Division encounter. International bows 1922 - Long-serving reds left-back Donald McKinlay won the first of his two caps for Scotland in a 2-1 defeat by Wales in the British International Championships in Wrexham. Right-half Maurice Parry made his international bow for the home side in the same game, while ex-red Ken Campbell was in the Scotland goal. 1928 – Elisha Scott played for Northern Ireland as they lost 2-1 to Wales in Belfast. Africans on target 2002 - Future reds Salif Diao and El-Hadji Diouf both scored in Senegal’s 2-0 African Cup of Nations Quarter-final defeat of DR Congo in Mali, with this being Diao’s first strike for his country. Meanwhile, ex-red Rigobert Song captained Cameroon in their 1-0 win over Egypt. 2006 - Song and future red Kolo Touré both converted in a penalty shoot-out after Cameroon’s Quarter-final with Ivory Coast in Cairo ended in a 1-1 draw. Song skippered his country to a 12-11 victory on penalties. 2008 - Rigobert was captain again as they beat Tunisia 3-2 after extra time to reach the Semi-finals once more. 2012 – Future red Touré played in the Ivory Coast’s 3-0 defeat of host nation Equatorial Guinea in a Quarter-final in Malabo. 2015 – Touré featured again as Ivory Coast beat Congo DR 3-1 in the Semi-final in Equatorial Guinea. Almost in charge 2008 - Steve Staunton was appointed Assistant Manager of Leeds United under Gary McAllister. He remained at Elland Road for ten months, leaving in the wake of Gary Mac’s sacking. 2010 – Ex-reds coach Paco Herrera was appointed Manager of Villarreal reserves, but only stayed in the role for four months. Final caps 2000 - Reserves forward Haukur Ingi Gudnason won his third and final cap as a reds player, as a substitute in a 3-2 Nordic Cup defeat of the Faroe Islands in La Manga. 1992 - Øyvind Leonhardsen won his last cap as a Molde player, his eleventh in total, as Norway beat Bermuda 3-1 in a friendly in Hamilton. Fellow future red Stig Inge Bjørnebye also played. 1976 - Joey Jones won his fourth and final Under-23’s cap for Wales, and only one as a red, in their 3-2 defeat by Scotland in Wrexham. Future red Alan Hansen won his third and last cap at this level as a substitute in the same game. Other reds games 1956 – We won a Second Division match 2-1 at Middlesbrough despite falling behind to the last of Lindy Delapenha’s four goals against the reds. John Evans and Billy Liddell scored our goals. 1950 – We drew 2-2 at Derby County with Billy Liddell and Albert Stubbins on target. John Morris scored one of his seven goals past us, with Billy Steel bagging the last of his four. 1922 – Harry Chambers netted twice as we won 2-0 at Birmingham City. Award winners 2008 - Kenny Dalglish won the Bill Shankly Memorial award from the Liverpool Echo at the Echo Arena. 2013 - Centre-half Martin Škrtel was named Slovakia’s Player of the Year for 2012, winning this award for the fourth time. On the move 2019 - Norwich City announced that former Academy midfielder Adam Phillips' contract had been cancelled by mutual consent. He moved on to Burnley six months later. 2021 – Defender Jarell Quansah signed pro terms with the reds. He has captained the Under-18’s, making it onto the first-team bench on two occasions so far. Also in international action 2016 – Future red Rafael Camacho scored for Portugal Under-16’s as they drew a friendly 3-3 with Germany in Vila Real, before triumphing 5-4 on penalties. 2009 – Emiliano Insúa skippered Argentina as they lost 2-1 to Uruguay in a final phase game at the Sudamericano Sub-20 “Juventud de América” in Venezuela. On the same day, Sami Hyypiä captained Finland as they were thumped 5-1 in a friendly in Japan, with ex-red Jari Litmanen also featuring. 1996 – Future red Vegard Heggem played for Norway Under-21’s in their 2-1 defeat by the USA in Jacksonville, Florida.

    A Norwegian nightmare 1974 - We secured our record victory, thumping Norwegians Strømsgodset 11-0 at Anfield in our opening game of that season’s European Cup Winners’ Cup campaign. Midfielder Brian Hall was the only outfield player not to score, with Phil’s Boersma and Thompson grabbing a brace apiece. For the record, our other goals that day came from an Alec Lindsay penalty, Steve Heighway, Peter Cormack, Emlyn Hughes, Tommy Smith, Ian Callaghan and Ray Kennedy. Happy birthday to the boss 1978 – New Head Coach Arne Slot was born in Bergentheim, the Netherlands. He took over as Jürgen Klopp’s replacement last June, leading us to victories in three of his first four games in charge before his 46th birthday. Debuting at the back 1988 - Steve Staunton made his reds bow in a 1-1 home draw with Tottenham Hotspur, when Peter Beardsley nabbed our goal with Terry Fenwick equalising a minute later, one of his four strikes against the reds. 1994 - New record signing Phil Babb made his first appearance, as we lost 2-0 at Manchester United. Andrei Kanchelskis struck the first of his five goals past us, with Brian McClair scoring the other. 1938 – Matthew John Fitzsimmons played his only senior reds game, standing in for regular centre-half Fred Rogers in our 3-1 defeat at Bolton Wanderers. Phil Taylor bagged our consolation, with George Hunt nabbing two of his five goals against us, and Jackie Roberts also on target for the Trotters. 2015 – Midfielders Cameron Brannagan and Pedro Chirivella both made their reds debuts as we drew 1-1 with Girondins de Bordeaux in our UEFA Europa League group game with keeper Simon Mignolet reaching a century of reds games. Adam Lallana struck our goal in France. Two-ton Bob 2019 – Forward Roberto Firmino played his 200th reds game as we eventually lost our UEFA Champions League group game 2-0 at SSC Napoli, so losing our first game as holders from the previous season. Dries Mertens' penalty and a late Fernando Llorente goal condemned us to defeat with the match still goalless with ten minutes remaining. To and from Upton Park 1993 - We undertook a complex transfer deal with West Ham United. Julian Dicks arrived at Anfield, with David Burrows, Mike Marsh and £1.5m heading in the opposite direction. None of them lasted much beyond a year at their new club. Signing on 2007 – Centre-half Daniel Ayala signed from Sevilla for £160,000. He made five senior appearances, sitting on the bench on a further eleven occasions before moving to Norwich City for £850,000 in August 2011. 1992 – Defender Torben Piechnik signed from F.C. København for £500,000. He only played 24 times, having helped his country to a shock win at Euro ’92, but Roy Evans released him after just two seasons at Anfield. 1924 – Defender Bert Shears signed from Aberdare Athletic. He played sixteen reds games without notching, moving to Tranmere Rovers in May 1930. Reds dismissed 2002 - Dietmar Hamann was sent off in our 2-0 UEFA Champions League defeat at Rafael Benítez’s Valencia, with Salif Diao given the run-around at centre-back. Pablo Aimar and Rubén Baraja struck, while Jerzy Dudek said, “We didn’t close down quickly enough and we weren’t strong enough. We played like girls.” 1983 - Future red Steve McMahon was dismissed as Aston Villa lost 2-1 at Anfield, thanks to second-half goals from Kenny Dalglish and Ian Rush as we extended our unbeaten run to the first six League games of that season. Colin Gibson netted for the Villains. Another defeat at the Bridge 2006 - We lost 1-0 at Chelsea, despite Michael Ballack being sent off for the home side. This was our fifth straight League defeat against the Blues. Didier Drogba struck one of his eleven goals against the reds. Red birthdays 1864 - Right-back Andrew Hannah was born in Renton, joining the reds from his hometown club in May 1892. He was the first ever captain of the club, and cousin of inside-left Davy Hannah who also turned out for the reds in the 1890’s. Andrew made 69 reds appearances, netting once as he led us to the Lancashire League and Second Division titles in his first two seasons at Anfield. 2003 – Midfielder Luca Stephenson was born in Sunderland. He signed pro terms in September 2020. First win at The Dell 1966 - We finally won at The Dell, at our seventh attempt, as Ian’s St. John and Callaghan scored in our 2-1 victory as Ron Yeats played his 200th League game for the reds. 1985 - We also faced the Saints, when Jan Mølby and Kenny Dalglish struck as we won our Screen Sport Super Cup match 2-1 at Anfield, with Danny Wallace on target for the visitors. Mixed fortunes in Europe We have played two other European ties on this day, without securing a win, although the seasons were both successful in the end. 1975 - We lost 1-0 at Hibernian in our first game of that victorious UEFA Cup campaign, with the goal scored by former Evertonian Joe Harper. Full-back Chris Lawler played his 549th and last reds game. 1980 - Terry McDermott netted our goal as we were held 1-1 at Finnish champions Oulun Palloseura. Forward beginning and end 1910 - Joseph Brough bagged the first of his three reds goals as we lost 3-2 at home to Nottingham Forest, with ‘Wee’ Ronald Orr also on target. Grenville Morris nabbed one of his six strikes past us, with JB Ford and Harry Lockett also netting. 1898 – Fred Geary played his 45th and final reds game in our 1-0 top-flight victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield, with Jack Cox on target. Twice against the Iron We faced Sc***horpe United in the Second Division on this day in consecutive years. 1959 - We drew 1-1 at the Old Show Ground, with Jimmy Melia nabbing our goal. 1960 - Jimmy Harrower, Tommy Leishman and Roger Hunt netted as we won 3-2 at Anfield. Big Anfield wins 1904 - We thumped Bradford City 4-1 in a Second Division meeting, thanks to a Jack Cox brace, Dickie Morris’s fifth and last reds strike and a Maurice Parry goal. 1923 – Forwards Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers and Jimmy Walsh each scored a hat-trick as we thumped Preston North End 7-3 in a Lancashire Senior Cup Second Round tie, with Dick Forshaw also netting. 1927 - Willie Devlin netted twice as we beat Derby County 5-2 in the top flight, with Jock McNab bagging his sixth and last reds goal and Gordon Hodgson and Dick Edmed also on the scoresheet. Harry Bedford bagged a brace for the Rams, two of his nine strikes against us. Keeper Elisha Scott played his 300th League game for the reds. 1928 – Albert Whitehurst bagged a treble as we thumped Bury 6-1 in a Lancashire Senior Cup Second Round tie at Anfield. Dick Edmed added a brace, with Kelly also on target. Another first 1892 – We played our first game in the Lancashire Senior Cup, beating Southport Central 2-0 at Anfield, thanks to goals from Tom Wyllie and John Smith. Double ton 1932 - Centre-half Tom ‘Tiny’ Bradshaw played his hundredth reds League game as we won 1-0 at Middlesbrough thanks to a Gordon Gunson strike, with inside-left Archie McPherson reaching a century of games for clubs in all competitions. Fabs at the Olympics 2000 – Future red Fábio Aurélio played for Brazil as they lost 3-1 to South Africa in an Olympics group game in Brisbane. Youngsters starting out 2003 - Unione Sportiva Triestina’s Alberto Aquilani bagged his only goal at this level while winning his first Under-20’s cap in Italy’s 2-0 defeat of Romania. 1998 – Future red Christian Poulsen won the first of his four caps for Denmark Under-19’s as they thumped Switzerland 4-0 in a friendly in Vejle. Youngsters on the world stage 2001 - Fernando Torres played for Spain Under-17’s as they lost 1-0 to Burkina Faso in the World Championship Finals in Trinidad. Unfortunately, they also lost their third group game to crash out at this stage. Fellow future red Javier Mascherano featured for Argentina in the same tournament as they beat Oman 3-0 as they went on to top the same group. Digger in charge 2008 – John Barnes was named as Manager of Jamaica. He took over that November, moving on in June 2009 to take charge of Tranmere Rovers. Other reds games 2000 – Steven Gerrard netted as we drew 1-1 at West Ham United, with Paolo Di Canio scooring for the home side. 1955 – We lost a Second Division fixture 3-1 at Leicester City, with Billy Liddell on the scoresheet. 1949 – We won 3-2 at Birmingham City. However, he did not make a senior appearance this time around. 2010 - Péter Gulácsi rejoined Tranmere Rovers on loan, playing fourteen times in this second spell. 2020 – Aussie left-back Brad Smith signed for Seattle Sounders, having been on loan since August 2018. 22021 – Scouse keeper Oscar Kelly signed pro terms with the reds, having been at the Academy since Under-9’s level. Future reds in international action 1978 – Gary Gillespie played for Scotland Under-21’s as they beat a senior USA side 3-1 in a friendly at Pittodrie. 2006 – Astrit Ajdarević appeared for Sweden Under-17’s in their 2-0 European Championships qualifying win in Greece. 2010 – Emre Can represented Germany Under-17’s as they beat Israel 2-0 in a friendly in Villingen-Schwenningen. 2015 – Ex-red Bernard Diomède took charge of France Under-17’s as they drew a friendly 1-1 with the Czech Republic.
