    Luis born 1987 – Uruguayan forward Luis Suárez was born in Salto. He signed from Ajax for a club record fee of up to €26.5m in January 2011 and bagged an impressive 82 goals in 133 dazzling reds outings. He helped us to claim the League Cup before joining Barcelona for a club record £75m in July 2014. Derby disappointments We have faced our nearest neighbours twice on this day in history, without tasting victory. 1995 - We were held to a goalless draw at Anfield in the Premiership, with ex-red David Burrows somewhat fortunate to stay on the pitch after hacking down Robbie Fowler having already been booked. 1981 - We lost 2-1 at Goodison in the Fourth Round of the FA Cup with substitute Jimmy Case netting our consolation, his 46th and final reds goal. Peter Eastoe netted the last of his four goals against the reds, with Imre Varadi also on target. Cup victory 2004 - A Bruno Cheyrou brace, his final reds goals, took us past Newcastle United in the FA Cup Fourth Round at a noisy Anfield, as we won 2-1 with Laurent Robert scoring for the visitors. Unfortunately, we went out to Portsmouth in the next round. 1987 - We also beat the Geordies in L4 with Paul Walsh and Ian Rush securing a 2-0 League victory as Alan Hansen played his 500th reds game while John Wark reached a century of outings for the club. 1959 - Fred Morris bagged a brace as we drew 2-2 with them in a friendly at Anfield. The Kop’s inspiration 1900 - The battle of Spion Kop took place, during the Boer War. It is from this battle, at which many British soldiers died including 320 Lancashire Fusiliers, that the Kop at Anfield, and several other grounds, gets its name. If you like Croatian players, we’ve got Bišcan at our club 2001 - Igor Bišcan scored his first reds goal as we thumped Crystal Palace 5-0 at Anfield to progress to the Worthington Cup Final, 6-2 on aggregate. Danny Murphy bagged a brace, to add to strikes from Robbie Fowler and a bearded Vladimír Šmicer. Most recently 2024 – We drew the second leg of our League Cup Semi-final 1-1 at Fulham, with Luis Díaz on target early on as we progressed to Wembley 3-2 on aggregate. 2021 – We lost 3-2 behind closed doors at Manchester United in an FA Cup Fourth Round tie, with Mohamed Salah bagging a brace. Mason Greenwood struck for the home side before Marcus Rashford netted one of his seven past us to date, with Bruno Fernandes scoring a free-kick to knock us out. 2015 – We were held to a goalless draw at Anfield by Bolton Wanderers in another Fourth Round fixture, with future reds keeper Ádám Bogdán impressing in the visitors’ goal. We won the replay, making it as far as the Semi-final that season. Off the mark 1914 – Forward Bob McDougall scored on his reds debut, the only goal of the game at West Bromwich Albion, and his only strike for us. Forward Jimmy Nicholl made the first of his 59 appearances for the reds. 1920 - Left-half Tom Bromilow grabbed the first of his eleven reds goals as we won 3-0 at Bolton Wanderers, with Billy Lacey and Tom Miller also scoring. Red farewells 1999 – Steve Harkness and Jason McAteer both played their 139th and final reds games in our cruel 2-1 defeat at Manchester United in the FA Cup Fourth Round. Michael Owen gave us an early lead, but United struck twice in the dying minutes, through one of Dwight Yorke’s eight goals past us and Ole Gunnar Solskjær. 1948 - We also lost to United at the same stage, going down 3-0 at Goodison Park. John Morris struck one of his seven goals past us, with Jack Rowley bagging one of his six and Charlie Mitten netting one of his five past us. 1953 – Half-back Jack Heydon made his 67th and last appearance for the club in our 3-1 defeat at Portsmouth, with Bob Paisley netting for the reds. Peter Harris bagged one of his eight goals against the reds, with Jimmy Scoular and Jack Henderson also on target. Rush hangs up his boots 1996 - Ian Rush played his final game for Wales, featuring in their 3-0 friendly defeat by Italy in Terni. It was his 73rd cap, in which time he scored 28 times, a Welsh record. Future red Rigobert Song played for Cameroon on the same day as they drew 3-3 with Angola in an Africa Cup of Nations Finals group game in South Africa. Red births and death 1885 – Forward James Garside was born in West Gorton, Manchester. He signed from Accrington Stanley in March 1904, but only played five times without scoring before returning to Stanley in May 1906. 1889 – Keeper Augustus Beeby was born in Osmaston, Derbyshire. He joined the club in December 1908 but only made sixteen senior appearances before leaving for Manchester City in May 1911. 1909 - Forward Vic Wright was born in Bloxwich, Walsall. He struck 33 times in 85 reds games after signing from Rotherham United in March 1934. He moved on to Plymouth Argyle in June 1937. 1975 - Outside-left Albert Pearson died in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He bagged four goals in 51 reds games following his capture from Port Vale in March 1919. He was only a red for two years, before returning to the Valiants. Avoiding a shock 1970 - Ray Smith struck for Fourth Division Wrexham to hand the Welsh side an interval lead in our FA Cup Fourth Round tie at Anfield. Fortunately, Bobby Graham bagged a brace with Ian St. John also on target as we won 3-1, with ex-Robin Peter ‘Max’ Wall in the reds side. We went out at Watford in the Sixth Round that season. God signs on 1999 - Robbie Fowler signed a new four-year contract, worth around £30,000 per week. He said in his autobiography that this was “almost half what the papers said I was getting, not at all bad, though”. 2008 – Centre-half Andre Wisdom signed from Bradford City. He made 22 first-team appearances, netting on his debut at BSC Young Boys in September 2013. He left for Derby County for an initial £2m in July 2017. In comes Jordy 2007 - Young forward Jordy Brouwer signed from Ajax, having scored 28 times in the Dutch youth league the previous season. He stayed with the second string until joining RKC Waalwijk on loan in January 2009. On the same day, David Mannix’s contract was terminated by mutual consent, and he signed for Norwegian side Ham-Kam a few days later. Tosh on target at Wembley 1973 - John Toshack netted for Wales as they drew 1-1 with England in a World Cup qualifier. Fellow reds Ray Clemence, Emlyn Hughes and Kevin Keegan were in the home side that day. On their way 1994 - Paul Stewart joined Crystal Palace on loan. He bagged three goals in eighteen games while at Selhurst Park as they won the First Division title. 2003 - Abel Xavier joined Galatasaray on loan, just one week shy of a year after his £800,000 transfer from across Stanley Park. On the same day, ex-reserves midfielder Neil Prince signed for Southport, having been released by Torquay United two months earlier. He only made one senior appearance for the Gulls, before joining fellow Conference side Leigh RMI. 2008 - Reserves centre-back Jack Hobbs joined Sc***horpe United on loan, after just five first-team appearances. He left Anfield to join Leicester City for £400,000 in April 2009. 2014 – Centre-half Daniel Ayala joined Middlesbrough from Norwich City for £350,000 after a successful loan spell in the north east. On the same day, Jermaine Pennant was released by Stoke City. 2015 – Midfielder Lee Peltier left Huddersfield Town to join Cardiff City, after just twelve games in his second spell with the Terriers. 2018 – Javier Mascherano joined Hebei China Fortune from Barcelona after just one goal in 334 games for the Catalans. 2019 – Midfielder Alexis Mac Aliister joined Brighton & Hove Albion from Argentinos Juniors, going on to score twenty times in 112 games for the Seagulls. 2024 – Young midfielder James Balagizi joined Kilmarnock on loan, making seven senior appearances while at Rugby Park. New centre opened 2000 - The Ian Frodsham Indoor Soccer Arena was opened by the Minister for Sport, Kate Hoey MP, marking the completion of the second phase of the club’s Academy. William’s last 1925 - Scottish left-winger Billy Chalmers played his second and final reds game in our 4-0 thumping of Bury in a top-flight fixture at Anfield. Danny Shone bagged a brace with Archie Rawlings and Jimmy Walsh also on the scoresheet. International bows 1998 - Brad Friedel won his 54th cap for the USA, and his first as a red, as they beat Sweden 1-0 in a friendly in Orlando. 2017 – Future red Luis Díaz made his debut for Colombia Under-20’s as they beat Brazil 1-0 in a South American Championships group game in Ecuador, with midfielder Allan on the losing side. Also in international action 2013 – Ex-red Momo Sissoko featured as Mali lost 1-0 to Ghana in an Africa Cup of Nations Finals group game in South Africa. 2019 – Wataru Endō and Takumi Minamino played as Japan beat Vietnam 1-0 in their AFC Asian Cup Quarter-final in Dubai. On the same day, fellow future red Darwin Núñez featured for Uruguay Under-20’s as they lost 1-0 to Argentina in a South American Championships group game in Chile. 2024 – Endō captained Japan as they beat Indonesia 3-0 in an AFC Asian Cup group game in Qatar, with ex-red Minamino also playing. Kolo Touré played three times for the Ivory Coast in Africa Cup of Nations games on this day over the years. 2006 – Ivory Coast beat Libya 2-1 in a group game as they made it all the way to the Final that year. 2010 – Algeria won 3-2 after extra time in a Quarter-final in Angola. 2015 – He played in a 1-1 draw with Mali in a group game in Equatorial Guinea, with future red Naby Keïta featuring in Guinea’s 1-1 draw with Cameroon. On the same day, future red Ibrahima Konaté played for France Under-16’s in their 4-2 defeat by Turkey. 2018 – Rigobert Song took charge of Cameroon as they drew 1-1 with Burkina Faso in the African Nations Championship in Morocco to finish bottom of their group. 2009 – Ronald Huth played for Paraguay as they lost 4-2 to Uruguay in a Sudamericano Sub-20 "Juventud de América" group game in Venezuela. Other reds games 2015 – Bolton Wanderers held us to a goalless draw in an FA Cup Fourth Round tie at Anfield. We made it as far as the Semi-final that season. 1976 – Substitute Roger Davies bagged the only goal of our visit to Derby County at the same stage. 1931 – We drew 1-1 at home to Aston Villa in a top-flight fixture, with Gordon Hodgson on target after Billy Walker had given the visitors a late lead with the last of his five goals past us. Uncle Roy the dad 1975 - Reds left-back Roy Evans and his wife Mary had their first child, Stephen.
  2. Club record signing 2018 – Dutch centre-half Virgil van Dijk signed from Southampton for a club record £75m. He struck 23 times in 270 reds games across his first seven seasons, helping us to keep 108 clean sheets while claiming the Premier League title, UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, two League Cups and FA Community Shield. On the same day, Estonian centre-half Ragnar Klavan headed in his second and last goal for the club to secure a last-minute 2-1 victory at Burnley. Sadio Mané opened the scoring after an hour before Jóhann Berg Guðmundsson equalised late on. 2020 – Japanese forward Takumi Minamino signed from Red Bull Salzburg for £7.25m. He went on to score fourteen goals in 55 outings, helping us to claim the Premier League title before moving on to AS Monaco for an initial €15m in June 2022. 2024 – Minamino played as Japan thrashed Thailand 5-0 in a friendly in Tokyo. RIP Gary 2012 - Gary Ablett died, aged just 46. He signed on at Anfield as a professional in November 1983, going on to make 147 reds appearances, scoring just once – in only his second game. He helped us to two League titles, FA Cup and FA Charity Shield before being sold to Everton by Graeme Souness for £750,000 in January 1992, with whom he won a second FA Cup. He returned to the club in the summer of 2006 to take over as Reserve Team Manager, leading them to the national title in his second season, although he left at the end of the following campaign. 1992 - Ablett played his 147th and final reds game as goals from Ray Houghton and Dean Saunders resulted in a 2-1 League defeat of Sheffield United at Anfield, after Brian Deane had struck one of his eight goals against the reds. 1977 – Right-back Jimmy ‘Parson’ Jackson died. He struck twice in 224 games for the reds after signing from Aberdeen for £1,750 in May 1925, appearing in every outfield position, and was renowned for his on-field arguments with notoriously foul-mouthed keeper Elisha Scott! He became reds skipper in 1928, also writing a regular column for the Liverpool Weekly Post before leaving the reds in 1933 to become ordained as a Presbyterian minister. 1917 – Scottish ex-reds keeper Don Sloan died in First World War action. He signed from Everton for £300 in May 1908, failing to keep a clean sheet in six reds games before becoming Player/Manager of his old club Distillery in Belfast in July 1909. Rushie’s hat-trick 1983 - Ian Rush bagged a treble as we beat Notts County 5-1 at Anfield, with his second being his fiftieth reds strike. Kenny Dalglish netted a brace as Phil Neal missed a penalty. John Fashanu struck the first of his six goals past us. 1994 - Rushie was on target as we won 2-1 at Ipswich Town, completing his record of scoring for us in each of the six New Year’s Day matches in which he played. Neil Ruddock nabbed the other goal to complete our first away League win since August. Most recently 2024 - Mohamed Salah scored his 150th League goal for the reds after a goalless first half against Newcastle United at Anfield, having had a first-half spot-kick saved. Alexander Isak levelled, but Curtis Jones and Cody Gakpo netted before Sven Botman headed a goal back. However, Salah converted another penalty to complete a 4-2 victory late on to maintain our lead at the top of the table. Happy birthdays 1993 - Right-back Jon Flanagan was born in Liverpool. He struck once in 51 senior reds games since making his debut in a 3-0 home victory over Manchester City in April 2011. He joined Rangers in June 2018 after being released by the reds earlier that month. 1955 – Chief Executive Officer Peter Moore was born in Liverpool, taking on the role in June 2017, moving on in August 2020. 1984 – Head of Nutrition Mona Nemmer was born. She joined from Bayern München in July 2016, having worked there for three years after a four-year spell with Germany Under-21’s. 2001 – Left-back Yasser Larouci was born in El Oued in Algeria. He arrived from Le Havre in July 2017 as a winger, playing two senior reds games before joining Troyes in July 2021. On the same day, midfielder Elijah Dixon-Bonner was born in Harlow. He debuted in our FA Cup Fourth Round replay against Shrewsbury Town in February 2020, so far making just two senior appearances. More red trebles galore 1909 - Joe Hewitt bagged a treble against his former club as we won 4-1 at Sunderland with Arthur Goddard also scoring. Billy Hogg struck one of his five goals against the reds, with Sam Hardy also saving one of his spot-kicks. We have also twice beaten the Wearsiders 2-0 on New Year’s Day. 1949 - Billy Liddell converted from the spot at Roker Park to add to a Fred Hall own goal as right-half Phil Taylor made his 200th appearance. 1977 - Ray Kennedy and Phil Thompson both headed in goals at Anfield as Emlyn Hughes played his 400th League game for the reds. On the same day, Glenn Hysén played for Sweden Under-18’s in their 2-1 friendly defeat by Romania in Israel. 1910 - Jack Parkinson scored three, including a penalty, as we thumped Woolwich Arsenal 5-1 at Anfield, with Sam Bowyer adding a brace. David Neave netted the last of his four goals past us. 1894 - We also beat the Gunners at home in our first ever New Year’s Day fixture, with Jim McBride scoring hist first reds goal and Malcolm McVean also netting in our 2-0 win. 1940 - Berry Nieuwenhuys scored a hat-trick as we thumped Crewe Alexandra 7-3 in a Wartime League game at Anfield. Billy Liddell struck in his first competitive game for the reds with G. Leadbetter, Matt Busby and Len Carney also on target that day. 1917 - Thomas Bennett bagged a treble as we beat Leeds City 4-0 in a testimonial for Mrs. Cameron at Elland Road, with Harry Lewis grabbing the other goal. Debuting between the sticks 1913 - Elisha Scott became our youngest ever goalkeeper at just eighteen years 131 days, keeping a clean sheet as we emerged from Newcastle United with honours even. 1896 - Harry Storer made his reds bow as we beat Manchester City 3-1 at Anfield. Jimmy Ross bagged a brace, with Malcolm McVean also on target. Luis up to a score scores 2014 - Luis Suárez became the quickest player ever to reach twenty Premier League goals in a season, taking just fifteen games to do so as he converted a second-half free-kick. We beat Hull City 2-0 at Anfield with Daniel Agger heading in from a corner before the break. Other debuts 1927 - Right-back Bob Done and left-winger George Pither both debuted as we lost 2-1 at Bolton Wanderers, with Dick Edmed nabbing our consolation and Fred Baron playing his twentieth and final reds game. John Smith netted two of his seven goals against the reds. 1920 - Right-half Jock McNab made his reds bow as Manchester United held us to a goalless draw at Anfield. We have faced the Mancs on two further occasions on New Year’s Day 1966 – We won 2-1 at Anfield with Tommy Smith and Gordon Milne netting, after Denis Law had given the visitors an early lead with one of his six strikes past us. 1989 - John Barnes struck our consolation as we lost 3-1 at Old Trafford. Mark Hughes bagged one of his nine strikes past us, with Brian McClair and Russell Beardsmore also on target. Twice against the Foxes 2015 – Steven Gerrard converted two first-half penalties, with the first wrongly awarded and the second being the reds’ hundredth successful conversion in the Premier League, as we became the first club to reach this milestone. However, David Nugent and Jeff Schlupp both struck after the break as the game ended 2-2 with Leicester City at Anfield. 1974 – We were held to a 1-1 home draw by the Foxes. Peter Cormack struck with Keith Weller nabbing one of his six goals past us, while Kevin Keegan reached a century of League games for the reds. Up against the Trotters 2011 – We secured a last-minute 2-1 victory over Bolton Wanderers in front of 35,400, the lowest League attendance at Anfield since Portsmouth visited on a Tuesday evening in December 2004. Kevin Davies headed the visitors in front with the last of his four goals against us, but Fernando Torres equalised early in the second half, with Joe Cole grabbing a dramatic late winner. 2007 - We won 3-0 at Anfield, thanks to a fantastic scissor-kick volley from Peter Crouch and strikes from Steven Gerrard and Dirk Kuyt, with all the goals coming in the second half. Dirk’s goal was our 900th in the Premier League. We have faced Bolton on three more occasions on this day in history. 1897 – We won 4-1 at Burnden Park with George Allan bagging a brace and John McCartney and Fred Geary also on target. 1907 - We lost 3-0 at Burnden Park. 2002 - We were held to a draw at Anfield with scouser Kevin Nolan cancelling out Steven Gerrard’s opener, which was our 150th goal in League encounters with Bolton. Up against the Blues We have entertained Chelsea three times on this day in history. 2005 - They completed their second League double over the reds, and first since 1919, when another deflected Joe Cole goal handed them victory at Anfield. 1924 - Danny Shone, Jimmy Walsh and Joe Keetley struck as we won 3-1. This was Keetley’s second and final reds goal. 1938 - John Shafto and Willie Fagan netted as we drew 2-2. Harry Burgess struck one of his nine goals against the reds, with Wilf Chitty also scoring. 1997 - We also visited Stamford Bridge, with Roberto Di Matteo grabbing the only goal of the game. In white 1906 - We beat Stoke 3-1 at Anfield, having to start the match with just ten men as left-back Billy Dunlop arrived late. The team played in white as the visitors had turned up in red jerseys. Not a ‘sir’ just yet 2000 - ‘Sir’ Roger Hunt was finally awarded an MBE for his services in the 1966 World Cup, one of the final five World Cup winners to receive this honour. 1983 - Ex-reds centre-forward John Toshack received the same honour. 1975 – Reds legend Ian Callaghan was also awarded an MBE. Double treble trouble 1934 - Jimmy Richardson and Sam Weaver both scored hat-tricks for Newcastle United as they thumped us 9-2 at St. James’ Park. The score was 2-2 at half-time, with Harold Taylor netting for the reds, to add to an Alec Betton own goal. Tommy Lang struck the last of his four goals past us, with Jimmy Boyd and Ron Williams also scoring for the home side. 2003 - A Laurent Robert free-kick deflected off Milan Baroš past Chris Kirkland as the Geordies won 1-0 on a sodden pitch. Salif Diao was sent off shortly after an hour for a wild challenge, while Grégory Vignal made his twentieth and final reds appearance as a late substitute. A rare defeat 1972 - Leeds United beat us 2-0, one of just eleven home League defeats we suffered during the whole of the 1970’s. Allan Clarke and Mick Jones each bagged one of their seven strikes past us. Other birthdays 1955 - Assistant Chief Scout Mike McGlynn was born in Liverpool. He was a senior coach with the FA for 20 years before becoming northern scout for West Ham United. He was initially in a part-time role for the reds before joining full time in 2007. 1881 – Welsh international half-back George Latham was born in Newtown. He joined the reds as an amateur in December 1902, signing on professionally the following year. He played nineteen reds games without scoring before joining Southport Central in 1909. Mølby foiled 1986 - Ian Rush ended a barren spell of eight games without a goal to draw us level at Sheffield Wednesday, before Martin Hodge saved a Jan Mølby spot-kick. Paul Walsh scored with his first touch from off the bench, but we were eventually held 2-2. Beating the Blues We have twice won wartime derby matches on this day in history. 1918 - Forward Thomas Bennett scored in his third consecutive game as we won 4-1 at Anfield, with Harry Lewis netting a brace and Jack Waine also on target. 1919 - We won 2-1 at Goodison Park thanks to goals from Harry Lewis and Arthur Metcalf. In and out 1949 – Half-back Jack Heydon signed on a free transfer from Everton, playing 67 times before moving to Millwall in May 1953. 2006 - John Welsh signed for Hull City in a swap deal for winger Paul Anderson. Welsh had played ten senior games for the reds, while Anderson made it onto the first-team bench just twice, both in Champions League matches. He signed for League One Nottingham Forest in June 2009, having spent the previous campaign on loan with them. 2011 – Reserves keeper Charles Itandje officially signed for Greek Super League side P.A.E. A.P.S. Atromitos Athens after dramatically falling out of favour at Anfield. 2013 – Ex-reserves forward Jon Newby was sacked as Manager of Colwyn Bay, having been in charge since November 2011. 2014 - Djibril Cissé signed for Bastia, scoring twice in eleven outings during the rest of his first campaign in Corsica. 2015 – Forward Jack Dunn, centre-half Lloyd Jones and midfielder Kevin Stewart all joined Cheltenham Town on loan, making a total of fifteen appearances between them. Red farewells 2008 - Club Secretary Sheila Walsh died of cancer. Those who paid tribute to her included boss Rafael Benítez, who said, “Sheila worked as a Secretary to seven different managers at Liverpool Football Club during her 26 years with us. I was privileged to work with her during these last four years. During my time as the manager here I found Sheila to be professional, committed, warm, friendly and above all courageous in the face of her suffering.” 2023 – Scottish forward Frank McGarvey died from cancer. He arrived from Celtic for £300,000 in May 1979 after bagging 113 goals in 245 League games for the Hoops. However, he never broke into the first team at Anfield, moving back to Celtic for £270,000 in March 1980, becoming Scotland’s most expensive footballer. 1901 – Romany right-half Rab Howell played his 67th and last reds game in our 3-1 home victory over Stoke.     In comes Razor 1987 - Ray Houghton signed from Oxford United for £825,000. He went on to strike 38 times in 202 reds games, helping us to two League titles, two FA Cups and the FA Charity Shield in his five years at Anfield. He was sold to Aston Villa for £900,000 in July 1992, as Graeme Souness tried to reduce the number of non-Englishmen in the squad, to comply with UEFA regulations for European competition. More ins and out 1894 - Centre-forward Hugh Henderson joined the reds from Third Lanark. He only made two appearances for the reds, both convincing defeats. 1962 – Scottish left-half Willie Stevenson signed from Rangers for £20,000. He missed just nine League games in his first four seasons, making a total of 241 appearances and netting eighteen times. He helped us to two League titles and our first FA Cup triumph in 1965 before moving on to Stoke City in December 1967. 1946 – Scottish left-winger George Paterson was sold to Swindon Town for their record fee, having struck once in three outings since arriving from the Hall Russell’s works team in May 1937. Phil Neal converted a penalty, with Ray Kennedy also on target. 1982 - We had two goals disallowed for offside as we lost 1-0 at HJK Helsinki in the first leg of our Second Round tie, although we went on to win the return 5-0. 1983 - We were held to a goalless draw at Anfield by Athletic Bilbao at the same stage, although we won in Spain. On target again 2021 – Mohamed Salah scored in a club record ninth consecutive game, netting twice, including once from the spot, to become our top ever goalscorer in the European Cup. Roberto Firmino played his 300th game for the club as we won our UEFA Champions League group encounter 3-2 at Club Atlético de Madrid, with Antoine Griezmann sent off for the home side, having already bagged a brace, with Naby Keïta also on target. 2014 – We scored in a club record eighteenth consecutive top-flight away game, eventually winning a topsy-turvy game 3-2 at Queens Park Rangers, despite the score being just 1-0 with three minutes of normal time remaining. We went ahead after Richard Dunne put through his own net before Leroy Fer twice struck the crossbar for the home side. Eduardo Vargas equalised before Philippe Coutinho put us back in front on ninety minutes. Vargas’s header was deflected in off Steven Gerrard in stoppage time, but future red Steven Caulker then diverted Raheem Sterling’s cross into his own net to hand us all three points. 1974 – We won 1-0 at Loftus Road with Brian Hall on the scoresheet early on as full-back Chris Lawler played his 400th League game for the reds. First strikes 1985 - Craig Johnston’s goal at Old Trafford was the first that Manchester United had conceded at home that season, as we drew 1-1 with Paul McGrath on target for the home side. 2002 - Salif Diao scored his first League goal to give us a 1-0 win at Leeds United, in Gérard Houllier’s 150th League match in sole charge, which took us to the top of the table. 1912 - Centre-half Bob Ferguson scored his first reds goal as we beat Blackburn Rovers 4-1 at Anfield. Arthur Metcalf netted a brace, with Arthur Goddard slotting home a penalty while Walter Aitkenhead bagged one of his four goals past us. Stevie’s century 2013 - Steven Gerrard scored his hundredth League goal as we drew 2-2 at Newcastle United, with Luis Suárez reaching a century of reds games. Yohan Cabaye opened the scoring for the home side from long range, with Gerrard equalising from the spot as Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa was sent off for a foul on Suárez. Paul Dummett volleyed in after the break, with Daniel Sturridge also on target. Most recently 2022 - Darwin Núñez headed in his first Anfield goal in the first half, which was enough to secure victory over West Ham United at Anfield, with Alisson Becker later saving a Jarrod Bowen spot-kick. He made 67 appearances at right- and centre-back after signing on a free transfer from Everton in January 1949, where he had been an amateur. He stayed at Anfield until May 1953 when he joined Millwall, but later returned to Merseyside to play for Tranmere Rovers. 1932 – Right-back Don Campbell was born in Bootle. He joined the reds in November 1950, netting twice in 48 games before moving on to Crewe Alexandra in July 1958. 1983 – Keeper Andy Lonergan was born in Preston. He spent the 2019/20 with the reds but failed to feature in the first team. 2001 – Midfielder Leighton Clarkson was born in Blackburn. He has so far made three senior appearances in cup competitions, being rewarded with a new contract in July 2020. Half a century high 1896 - We left Bramall Lane with a 1-1 draw after our fiftieth away League game. Tom ‘Tiny’ Bradshaw notched our goal. Up against the Trotters We have twice faced Bolton Wanderers on this day in history. 1935 - Our top-flight trip to Burnden Park ended goalless. 1918 - We won a Wartime League fixture at home 6-1, with Thomas Green netting twice and John Bamber, Arthur Metcalf, Harry Lewis and Harold Wadsworth all on target. Into the Hall of Fame 2006 - Alan Hansen, Roger Hunt and Ian Rush were all inducted into the National Football Museum’s Hall of Fame. Rewarded 2012 – Young Spanish midfielder Suso signed a new contract, having been a pro at Anfield since November 2010. He notched once in 21 senior outings, moving on to AC Milan in January 2015. Nominated 2008 - Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres were both named on a short-list for the Ballon d’Or by France Football magazine. The trophy was eventually claimed by Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo, with Torres finishing in third and Gerrard in tenth. North of the border 1987 - The reds took part in a testimonial match for Dundee’s George McGeachie, winning 4-0.     Happy birthday Sami 1973 – Ex-reds centre-half Sami Hyypiä was born in Helsinki. The mighty Finn played 464 reds games, netting 35 times and helping us to claim the European Cup, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups, two League Cups and two UEFA Super Cups following his £2.5m bargain capture from Dutch side Willem II in May 1999. He left the club in the summer of 2009 to sign for Bayer 04 Leverkusen on a free transfer, subsequently moving into management. Other reds celebrating 1998 – Trent Alexander-Arnold was born in Liverpool, signing pro terms on his seventeenth birthday. He was at the Academy since the age of six, striking nineteen times in 310 senior appearances across his first eight seasons as he helped the reds to claim the League title, UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, League Cup and FA Community Shield. 1890 – Centre-half Walter Wadsworth was born in Bootle. The hard man was signed from Ormskirk in April 1912, going on to score eight goals in 242 reds games, some alongside his brother Harold at outside-right as he helped us to claim back-to-back League titles in 1922 and 1923. 1990 – Uruguayan centre-half Sebastián Coates was born in Montevideo. He signed from Nacional for £7m in August 2011, scoring twice in 24 games before joining Sunderland for £4m in July 2015 after a season there on loan. He played for Uruguay Under-20’s on his nineteenth birthday as they were beaten 3-1 by Brazil in their World Cup Finals Round of Sixteen encounter in Egypt. 1995 – Reserves centre-back Lloyd Jones was born. He signed from his hometown club Plymouth Argyle for £150,000 in June 2011, turning pro in May 2013 after sitting on the bench in our Premiership visit to Fulham earlier that month. He skippered our Under-21’s for more than a season, moving on permanently to Luton Town in January 2018 after a series of loan spells. First treble 1893 - James Stott bagged our first ever League hat-trick in our 6-0 Second Division defeat of Middlesbrough Ironopolis, with Duncan McLean scoring his first goal for the club and Hugh McQueen and David Henderson also on target. Harry all smiles 1922 - Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers scored our first ever derby hat-trick in a 5-1 League win at Anfield that also counted for the Lancashire Senior Cup, although his first goal is also sometimes credited as an own goal by keeper Tom Fern. We went behind early on to a Billy Williams strike, but fought back in the second half. Jock McNab and birthday boy Tom Bromilow also struck as we hit the Blues for five for the first time, with the Kop forgetting the opener and adopting a new chant, “One two, one two three, one two three four, five nil”, which is now part of ‘Poor Scouser Tommy’. We went on to claim our third League title that season. 1972 - We hosted another derby fixture when Peter Cormack headed in the only goal of the game. He was one of Graeme Souness’s failed buys, arriving from Tottenham Hotspur for £2.3m in July 1992, scoring three times in 42 uninspiring appearances before leaving for free for Sunderland in March 1996 after a successful loan spell. Last strikes 1911 – Centre-half Jimmy Harrop scored his fourth and last reds goal as we lost 2-1 at home to Blackburn Rovers. Meanwhile, Anthony Le Tallec scored in his fourth consecutive Under-21’s game, grabbing a treble with Florent Sinama-Pongolle also playing in France’s 3-0 win in another qualifier in Switzerland. Ramon Calliste was also in international action that day. 2010 – Danny Wilson played as Scotland Under-21’s lost the first leg of their European Championships Play-off 2-1 in Iceland. On the move 2009 - Steve Staunton took over as Manager of Darlington. He was sacked in March 2010 with the Quakers at the bottom of the League and facing relegation to the Conference. He had won just four of his 23 League matches in charge. 2008 - Joe Allen joined Wrexham on loan from Swansea City, netting once in just two outings for the Dragons. 1898 – Inside-forward Frank Becton moved on to Sheffield United. The England international had signed from his hometown club Preston North End for £200 in March 1895, notching 42 times in 86 reds games. 2022 – Ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper signed a new contract as Head Coach of Nottingham Forest. He had taken them from bottom of the Championship into the Premier League in his first season but was sacked in December 2023 after leading them to 42 victories in 108 games in charge.
