He signed from Chelsea for £12m in January 2013, netting an impressive 67 times in 160 reds games before being released in June 2019. 2013 – He scored the only goal of David Moyes’ Manchester United’s League visit to Anfield in just the fourth minute. 1993 – Ex-reds left-back Jack Robinson was born in Warrington. He became the club’s then youngest ever player when he debuted at Hull City in May 2010 aged just sixteen years and 250 days. He was sold to Queens Park Rangers in August 2014, scoring twice in 39 outings before moving on to Nottingham Forest in June 2018. 2006 – Midfielder Afolami Onanuga was born. He joined the reds as an Under-11, turning pro in November 2023. The very beginning 1892 - We played our first ever game, beating reigning Midland League champions Rotherham Town 7-1 in a friendly that kicked off at Anfield at 5.30pm on a Thursday evening. 1894 - We played our first ever First Division game, drawing 1-1 at Blackburn Rovers, with Harry Bradshaw putting the reds in front before Coombe Hall equalised for the home side. Unfortunately, we were relegated at the end of the season. Outside-left John Drummond played the first of eighteen senior reds games, with keeper Bill McCann making the first of his seventeen outings. Rams hit for six 2007 - Ryan Babel scored his first reds goal as we thumped Derby County 6-0 at Anfield to go into the international break on top of the table for the first time in five seasons. Xabi Alonso and Fernando Torres each bagged a brace, with Andriy Voronin also on target. Birth of the Kop 1906 - Joe Hewitt bagged the only goal of our game against Stoke at Anfield as the Kop stand was used for the first time, in scorching temperatures, although it was not yet known by that name. After the previous season’s title success, the board had decided to demolish what was known as the Oakfield Road Embankment, or Walton Breck Road End, and replace it with a huge bank of rubble and cinders. Germany 1 Liverpool 5 2001 - All of England's goals in their sensational 5-1 win over Germany in Munich were scored by reds. Michael Owen grabbed a hat-trick, with Steven Gerrard nabbing his first international goal and Emile Heskey also on target. Dietmar Hamann was on the losing side, while Nick Barmby, Jamie Carragher and ex-red Steve McManaman all also appeared. Meanwhile, future reds forward Fernando Morientes bagged a brace as Spain beat Austria 4-0 in their qualifying encounter in Valencia. 2007 – Future red Mamadou Sakho scored in the penalty shoot-out as France Under-17’s lost 5-4 to Spain in their World Championship Finals Quarter-final after the game itself ended 1-1 in South Korea. 2000 – Future reds recruiter Mark Burchill netted for Scotland Under-21’s in their 3-1 European Championships qualifying win in Latvia. On the same day, Richie Partridge and future reds Milan Baroš and John Arne Riise all featured in qualifiers at the same level, with Riise the only one to be on the winning side as Norway beat Armenia 5-1. Keeping debuts 1904 - Ned Doig became our oldest ever debutant, aged 37 years and 307 days, when he played in our 2-0 opening day home defeat of Burton United in the Second Division, thanks to a Robbie Robinson brace. Half-back Jimmy Hughes and left-back David Murray both also played their first reds games. 1912 - Elisha Scott signed for the reds. He played 468 times in eighteen seasons at Anfield, winning two League titles before joining Belfast Celtic as Player/Manager in June 1934. Crossing the park 1962 - Winger Johnny Morrissey was sold to Everton for £10,000. He had signed on as a professional in April 1957, netting six times in 37 reds games. He scored fifty goals in 314 appearances for the Blues, helping them to two League titles. Facing the Foxes 2018 – New keeper Alisson Becker was robbed while trying to play out from the back leading to Rachid Ghezzal’s consolation as we won 2-1 at Leicester City. Sadio Mané and Roberto Firmino had both struck before the break to give us a two-goal lead. James Milner reached a century of League games for the reds. 1973 – We drew a top-flight encounter 1-1 at Filbert Street. John Toshack headed us into the lead after the break, but Alan Birchenall equalised with the last of his four goals against us. Red arrivals 1910 - William Stuart signed from Bolton Wanderers. He scored once in five outings, moving on to Wrexham in 1912. 1994 - Phil Babb signed from Coventry City for a club record £3.6m, also a British record fee for a defender. He struck once in 170 reds appearances in his six years at Anfield, before being released on a free transfer to Sporting Clube de Portugal. 2008 - Right-back Steve Finnan moved in the opposite direction, after one goal in 217 appearances since signing from Fulham for £3.5m in July 2003. Meanwhile, forward Nathan Eccleston signed for Partick Thistle, having been released by Blackpool, John Arne Riise joined APOEL in Cyprus, Swedish left-winger Alexander Kačaniklić joined F.C. København on loan from Fulham, and forward David N’Gog returned to France on loan from Bolton Wanderers with Stade de Reims. Farewell Welfare 1966 – Forward Harry Welfare died in Angra dos Reis, Brazil. He joined the reds from Northern Nomads in 1912, notching once in four outings before signing for Wrexham the following year. He later had a very successful career in Brazil, helping Fluminense to claim the title three times in succession while bagging 163 goals in just 166 games. 1933 – Scottish outside-right Danny McRorie joined Millwall on trial, moving on permanently to Rochdale a month later. He had bagged six goals in 35 reds games after signing from Morton for £1,500 in November 1930. Starting and ending 1900 - Right-back Tom Robertson made his reds bow as we beat Blackburn Rovers 3-0 at Anfield in another season opener. Tommy Robertson, Charlie Satterthwaite and Sam Raybould struck the goals as Alex Raisbeck captained the side at the age of just 21 years and 249 years, remaining the club’s youngest ever captain until Curtis Jones in February 2020. 1937 – Forward Ted Harston scored his final two reds goals in our 3-2 home defeat of Portsmouth. Berry Nieuwenhuys also struck for the reds, with Jock Anderson bagging the first two of his four goals past us. 1951 – Inside-forward Willie Fagan played his 182nd and final reds game as we beat Huddersfield Town 2-1 in a First Division fixture at Anfield. Billy Liddell and Kevin Baron struck our goals, while Vic Metcalfe netted one of his six strikes against the reds. Centre-backs off the mark against the Saints 1979 - Colin Irwin scored his first senior reds goal, although it was not enough to prevent us going down to a 3-2 League defeat at The Dell, with David Johnson grabbing our other goal. Charlie George scored the last of his five goals past us, with Phil Boyer and Trevor Hebberd also on target for the home side. 1992 - Mark Wright struck his first reds goal, in a 1-1 draw at home to his former club Southampton after Kerry Dixon had put the visitors in front with his seventh and final goal against the reds. UEFA President Lennart Johansson officially opened the Centenary Stand prior to the game. 1993 - Phil Babb scored his first Coventry City goal in their 1-0 defeat of the reds at Highfield Road, as Rob Jones was sent off for receiving two yellow cards in the space of three minutes. David Burrows played his 193rd and final reds game, against one of his future employers. Hat-tricks against We conceded three hat-tricks on this day in the 1930’s. 1930 - Vic Watson netted the last four of his nine goals past us as we were crushed 7-0 at West Ham United in a game that kicked off at 6pm. Stan Earle grabbed the final two of his four strikes against the reds, with Wilfred James also scoring as keeper Arthur Riley reached a century of reds outings. 1934 - Ted Drake and Ray Bowden both grabbed trebles as we were humbled 8-1 at Arsenal who were on their way to a third consecutive League title, with outside-left Alf Hanson grabbing our consolation and Drake having another effort ruled out for a push. Cliff Bastin scored the final goal of his four against us, with Jack Crayston also netting. 1919 - We also faced the Gunners, when Harry Chambers and Fred Pagnam scored in a 3-2 home defeat. Bert White bagged a brace, with Billy Blyth also netting for the visitors. Alou and goodbye 2003 - Alou Diarra joined Bastia on loan. He eventually left Anfield permanently to join Racing Club de Lens for £2m in June 2005, without ever playing a first-class reds game. 2016 - Diarra had his contract with Charlton Athletic terminated by mutual consent after one goal in 45 outings, signing for AS Nancy-Lorraine on the same day. First and last caps 2021 – Gini Wijnaldum won his first cap as a Paris Saint-Germain player as the Netherlands drew a World Cup qualifier 1-1 with Norway in Oslo, with Virgil van Dijk skippering the side and future red Cody Gakpo also featuring. On the same day, Harry Wilson played for Wales for the first time since joining Fulham, having a penalty saved as they drew a friendly 0-0 with Finland in Helsinki. Future red Melkamu Frauendorf debuted for Germany Under-18’s in their 2-09 defeat of Slovakia. Sadio Mané netted as Senegal beat Togo 2-0 in the World Cup while Andy Robertson captained Steve Clarke’s Scotland as they lost a qualifier 2-0 in Denmark. Diogo Jota, Naby Keïta, Kostas Tsimikas, Ben Woodburn and ex-reds Dejan Lovren and Danny Ward also played for their countries. 2017 – Future red Dominik Szoboszlai debuted for Hungary Under-21’s as they won a friendly 2-1 in Germany. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain played for England for the first time since moving to Anfield, in their 4-0 World Cup qualifying win in Malta. Meanwhile, Andy Robertson won his first cap as a reds player, scoring in Scotland’s 3-0 win in Lithuania, with Dominic Solanke playing for England Under-21’s for the first time since moving to Anfield and Rhian Brewster winning his only England Under-18’s cap. On the move 2005 - Bjørn Tore Kvarme re-signed for Rosenborg BK, having left Bastia earlier in the year. He retired from the game in June 2008. 2010 – Forward Mark Burchill signed for Cypriot side Enosis Neon Paralimni. He joined the reds in a recruitment role in the summer of 2024. 2017 – Keeper David Martin signed for Millwall, only making one senior appearance in his first campaign with the Lions. 2020 – Young keeper Kai McKenzie-Lyle signed for Cambridge United, having been released by the reds three months earlier. On the same day, centre-half Rhys Williams signed a new contract while Chief Commercial Officer Billy Hogan took over as Chief Executive Officer. David Shearer bagged one of his four goals against the reds, with Phil Neal equalising from the spot. 1956 – We beat Grimsby Town 3-2 in a home Second Division encounter. Louis Bimpson struck twice, with Alan Arnell also on target as Bob Crosbie netted a brace for the visitors. 1954 – Plymouth Argyle held us to a 3-3 draw in the Second Division at Anfield. Farewells to legends 1991 - Alan Hansen retired through injury. He had signed from Partick Thistle for £100,000 in May 1977 and made 620 reds appearances, notching fourteen times and helping us to claim three European Cups, eight League titles, two FA Cups, three League Cups and four FA Charity Shields. 2021 – Scottish forward Ian St. John died. He joined from his hometown club Motherwell in May 1961 for a then club record fee of £37,500. The Saint scored 118 goals in 425 games for the reds, including the winning goal in the 1965 FA Cup Final, also helping us to win two First Division titles, the Second Division and FA Charity Shield, before moving to South Africa in February 1971 to join Hellenic. Triple treble This day has brought three reds hat-tricks. 1902 - Sam Raybould netted a treble in our very first senior game on this day, a 4-0 home League win over Manchester City, with Jack Cox adding the other. 1930 - We faced City again, losing a top-flight encounter at Maine Road 4-3, with Jim Smith, Archie McPherson and Gordon Hodgson on the scoresheet. Eric Brook bagged one of his nine goals against the reds, with Tommy Tait nabbing the last two of his four against us and future Blue Tommy Johnson netting one of his eight past us. 1947 - Albert Stubbins grabbed three including a full-length diving header along the icy pitch in a 4-1 FA Cup Sixth Round win over Birmingham City at Anfield, with Jack Balmer also on target. This was the first all-ticket game staged in the city, only going ahead after a mid-morning pitch inspection. We were knocked out by Burnley in the Semi-final that season after a replay. 1919 - Tom Miller struck a hat-trick as we thumped Bury 6-0 in a Wartime League match at Anfield. Rob Matthews and Donald McKinlay were also on target, with Harry Lewis converting a penalty. 1941 - We also beat the Shakers in another Wartime League fixture as we won 5-2 at Gigg Lane, thanks to braces from Billy Liddell and Dicky Dorsett and a Cyril Done strike. For Sammy 1988 - We played in a testimonial match for Sammy Lee, beating Club Atlético Osasuna 2-0 at their Estadio El Sadar. Kenny Dalglish and Ray Houghton scored the goals, but unfortunately Sammy himself could not play due to injury. 1894 – We beat Newton Heath, as Manchester United were then known, 3-0 in a friendly at Anfield in aid of Stanley Hospital. Tom ‘Tiny’ Bradshaw, Douglas Dick and Arthur Worgan all netted. Most recently 2023 – Wolverhampton Wanderers lost 2-0 at Anfield, with Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah both on target late on. 2015 - We beat Manchester City 2-1 with Jordan Henderson scoring before Edin Džeko equalised for the visitors with one of his five goals past us to date. Philippe Coutinho struck the winner. 2014 - We won 3-0 at Southampton, with Luis Suárez and substitute Raheem Sterling on target before Steven Gerrard converted a last-minute penalty, his tenth consecutive success from the spot, while future red Adam Lallana hit the woodwork as Suárez reached a century of League outings for the reds. Reds farewells 1958 - Outside-right Brian Jackson played his 133rd and last reds game as we lost an FA Cup Sixth Round tie 2-1 at Blackburn Rovers, with Bobby Murdoch netting our goal. 1962 - Inside-right Fred Pagnam died. He signed for the reds from Blackpool in May 1914, and so could only bag thirty goals in 39 reds games before joining Arsenal in October 1919, with whom he kept up his remarkable strike-rate. Happy birthday Djimi 1980 - Djimi Traoré was born in Saint Ouen. He signed for the reds from Stade Lavallois Mayenne for just £550,000 in February 1999, and struck once in 141 reds games, helping us to claim the Champions League in 2005. He joined Charlton Athletic for £2m in August 2006, but moved on again just five months later, this time to Portsmouth, before returning to French football. Reds debutants 1989 - Mike Marsh made his reds debut in our 2-0 home League victory over Charlton Athletic, when Peter Beardsley struck for the first time in eighteen matches, later added to by a John Aldridge penalty past ex-reds reserves keeper Bob Bolder. This was our first home fixture in six weeks. 1952 - Left-winger Mervyn Jones and defender George Whitworth both debuted in our 1-1 top-flight draw at Fulham. Jimmy Payne scored before Charlie Mitten converted a spot-kick, the last of his five goals against us. In Europe We have twice travelled overseas for first leg European matches on this day in history, both times returning the happier of the two teams. 1978 - We won 2-1 at SL Benfica in the European Cup Third Round, with Jimmy Case converting a free-kick and Emlyn Hughes netting in torrential rain after we had gone behind. This was Benfica’s first defeat in 47 games as Nené struck the first of his three goals against us for the Eagles. 1966 - We returned from Honvéd with a goalless draw in the first leg of our Second Round match in the European Cup Winners’ Cup on as we edged a step closer to the Final. An unhappy century 1924 – Forward Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers bagged his hundredth reds goal as we lost 3-1 at Arsenal in a top-flight fixture as right-half Jock McNab reached a century of reds games. Harry Woods scored two of his five goals past us, with Jock Rutherford netting the last of his six against the reds. Dixie dies 1980 – Legendary Blues forward Dixie Dean died from a heart attack after attending our 2-1 win at Goodison. Ex-Blue David Johnson scored, added to by a controversial Phil Neal penalty, with Peter Eastoe scoring one of his four goals against us. He signed a new contract in May 2022, making two senior appearances in cup competitions before moving on to Oxford United in August 2023. 1895 – Inside-left Dick Forshaw was born in Preston. He joined the reds in July 1919, winning two League titles while with the reds, scoring an impressive 124 times in 288 games.
