1974 – Terry McDermott signed from Newcastle United for £175,000. He struck 81 times in 329 reds games, helping us to three European Cups, four League titles, two League Cups, UEFA Super Cup and two FA Charity Shields. In 1980 he became the first player to win both the PFA and Football Writers’ Player Of The Year Awards in the same season. He returned to St. James’ Park in September 1982.

1998 - Gérard Houllier took over as sole Manager, with Roy Evans leaving after four years in the hot-seat. Uncle Roy’s only trophy in charge had been the Coca Cola Cup in 1995, although he led us to four consecutive top four finishes in the League. Ged went on to lead us to the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, two League Cups, UEFA Super Cup and FA Charity Shield before departing in the summer of 2004.

1990 – Dutch midfielder Gini Wijnaldum was born in Rotterdam. He moved to Anfield for an initial £23m in July 2016, notching 22 times in 237 games and helping us to claim the Premier League, UEFA Champions League and UEFA Super Cup before he moved on to Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer in July 2021. Future red Jari Litmanen played for Finland on the same day as they won a friendly 2-1 in Tunisia.

1973 - Patrik Berger was born in Prague. He struck 35 times in 196 reds games after his £3.25m capture from Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund in September 1996 following a successful Euro ‘96 with the Czech Republic, coming off the bench to help us claim the FA Cup, UEFA Cup and FA Charity Shield in 2001. However, he was later dogged by persistent knee trouble, and allowed to join Premiership new-boys Portsmouth on a free transfer in June 2003.

1934 - Reds stalwart Ronnie Moran was born in Crosby. He spent 49 years at Anfield, making 379 senior appearances and bagging seventeen goals. He helped us to win the Second Division in 1963 and the League title the following year, before joining the coaching staff. He took charge of the reds for ten games in between Kenny Dalglish’s departure and Graeme Souness’s appointment, having another spell in temporary charge while Souness recovered from his heart operation.
