Supersub’s treble 1980 - David Johnson missed our trip to Norwich City after receiving four stitches to a head wound acquired on international duty, while Graeme Souness was suspended, which meant that Bob Paisley made his first changes to the reds side for seventeen games. Sammy Lee and David Fairclough stepped in, with supersub notching his only reds hat-trick in our 5-3 win. We had fallen behind to a first-minute header from the veteran Martin Peters, the last of his fourteen goals past us, with Kevin Reeves levelling things again with his head before the break, one of his four strikes against the reds. Justin Fashanu’s spectacular strike tied the game at 3-3 and was good enough to win Match Of The Day’s Goal of the Season award. Kenny Dalglish and Jimmy Case added late goals to clinch the victory. The day was made even better for reds fans as Everton lost 4-0 at home to Ipswich Town, with Toffees supporters venting their frustration with boss Gordon Lee by throwing cushions onto the pitch! On the way to Wembley 1982 - We reached our second consecutive League Cup Final as Ian Rush and Kenny Dalglish netted in a 2-2 draw in our Semi-final second leg meeting with Ipswich Town at Anfield, to progress 4-2 on aggregate. This was the third consecutive match in which we had faced the Tractor Boys. The game was also notable for future red John Wark taking a painfully direct hit from a Terry McDermott pile-driver, leading the Kop to start singing “Johnny Wark, Johnny Wark, Johnny Wark” in falsetto! Eric Gates struck one of his five goals against the reds, with Alan Brazil also on the scoresheet. Sadio again 2019 - Sadio Mané netted in his fourth consecutive game to open the scoring with his head as we beat Bournemouth 3-0 at Anfield. Gini Wijnaldum was also on target before the break, with Mohamed Salah completing the scoring shortly after half-time as we restored a three-point lead over Manchester City at the top of the table. An Abel start 2002 - Abel Xavier scored on his reds debut as we romped past Ipswich Town, winning 6-0 at Portman Road to end their good run and help send them on the way towards relegation. Sami Hyypiä also scored, to add to braces from strike partners Emile Heskey and Michael Owen. Pegguy Arphexad made his sixth and final reds appearance as a second-half substitute for Jerzy Dudek, helping us to keep our first clean sheet on this day in history since 1921, with ten matches between the two. 2016 – Centre-half Tiago Ilori played his third and last reds game as a young reds team lost 2-1 at West Ham United in our FA Cup Fourth Round replay. Philippe Coutinho scored from a free-kick after Michael Antonio had scored one of his five goals past us to date on the stroke of half time. However, Angelo Ogbonna headed in an extra-time winner. 1972 – We lost an FA Cup Fourth Round replay 2-0 at Leeds United, with Allan Clarke grabbing the last two of his seven goals past us as Ian Ross made his 69th and last reds appearance. Mixed derby fortunes 1991 - David Speedie scored twice on his Anfield debut in a 3-1 win, with Jan Mølby also on target, in the first of our three consecutive derby games in twelve days. Pat Nevin bagged his only derby goal for the visitors in this fixture. 1929 – Forward John McFarlane became our youngest ever player when he debuted as we lost 2-1 at home to Everton in the League, with Harry Race grabbing our consolation. McFarlane was aged just seventeen years and 47 days, but only played one more senior game. Tommy White struck one of his four goals past us, with Tom Griffiths also netting. On the move 1999 - Danny Murphy was sent back on loan to his former club Crewe Alexandra. He notched once in sixteen games back at Gresty Road. On the same day, Jamie Carragher and future reds Markus Babbel and Vladimír Šmicer all played for their countries. 2006 - Ex-reds loanee keeper Paul Jones was on the move, joining Queens Park Rangers on a free transfer from Wolverhampton Wanderers. He turned out 26 times for the R’s before retiring from the professional game at the end of the 2006/07 season. 2012 - Xherdan Shaqiri joined Bayern München from Basel for €11.6m after 23 goals in 130 games for the Swiss side. He had helped them to three consecutive League titles and the Swiss Cup twice. 2019 – Left-winger Alexander Kačaniklić signed for Hammarby IF back in his native Sweden having been released by Nantes the previous December. 2022 – Shaqiri moved to Chicago Fire from Olympique Lyonnais for a reported €6.5m, scoring fourteen times in 63 outings in his first two campaigns in the USA. On the same day, young midfielder Luca Stephenson signed a new contract with the reds. He had arrived from Sunderland at Under-15’s level. Birth and deaths 2019 – Utility player Ian Ross died. He signed professional terms in August 1965 and netted four times in 69 appearances spread across six seasons at Anfield. He left for Aston Villa in February 1972 for £60,000, going on to captain them to the Third Division title, as well as the League Cup in 1975. 1993 – Japanese midfielder Wataru Endō was born in Yokohama. He signed from Vfb Stuttgart for a reported €19m in August 2023, debuting against Bournemouth the day after arriving. 1957 - Ex-reds centre-back Colin Irwin was born in Liverpool. He turned professional in November 1974 and made just 44 reds appearances, including the 1981 League Cup Final, although he did not get a winners’ medal, as he was left out of the replay. However, he won a European Cup winner’s medal in 1978, despite not seeing any action in our Wembley victory. John Toshack signed him for Swansea City for a club record £340,000 in the summer of 1981. 1905 – Half-back Barney Battles died in Gallowgate, Glasgow. He won the title two years running in Scotland, for Hearts in 1895 and then Celtic, joining the reds for six weeks on loan at the end of the 1895/96 season where he featured in two Second Division games and three of the four Test matches as we secured promotion, for which he received a special gold medal and a cheque for a “handsome sum”. He re-signed from Dundee in March 1898 for £20 but only played one more game before joining Celtic for a third spell seven months later. 1936 – Inside-forward Arthur Metcalf died. He signed from Newcastle United for £150 in May 1912 and netted 28 times in 63 reds games, playing in every position on the park. Against the Mancs 1986 - Colin Gibson opened the scoring for Manchester United in our League meeting at Anfield. Paul Walsh had to go off with an ankle injury, and substitute John Wark equalised after Sammy Lee hit a post, to secure a point. 1921 - We also entertained United, winning our top-flight meeting 2-0 thanks to goals from Harry Lewis and Harry Chambers. Keeper Frank Mitchell made his reds bow in this game. 1946 - Unfortunately, we lost a Wartime League match at Maine Road 2-1, with Jack Balmer netting our consolation. 200 for Tiny 1935 - Centre-half Tom ‘Tiny’ Bradshaw played his 200th reds game as we drew 1-1 at West Bromwich Albion, with our score coming from a George Shaw own goal and Teddy Sandford bagging one of his five goals against the reds. Reserves record 1952 - A record crowd of 18,511 attended a reserves fixture, in a game that marked Albert Stubbins’ return from injury, against Everton. This feat was especially impressive as over 40,000 were watching the Blues’ first team face Leicester City in a Second Division match across the park at the same time. Trotters again 1924 - We faced Bolton Wanderers for the second game in succession, following a 4-1 FA Cup Second Round win at Burnden Park. Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers and Dick Forshaw struck before Donald McKinlay converted a penalty in a 3-1 top-flight victory. John Smith bagged one of his seven strikes past us. Award winners 2004 - Harry Kewell was named Oceania’s Player of the Year for the third time. 2007 - Rafael Benítez won the Barclays Manager of the Month award for January after four straight League wins during the month. Thumping the Gunners 1907 - Jack Parkinson bagged a brace as we beat Woolwich Arsenal 4-0 at Anfield, with Jack Cox and Bill McPherson also on the scoresheet. Out of a job 1997 - John Toshack resigned as Manager of Spanish side Real Club Deportivo La Coruña after eighteen months in charge, during which time they had beaten Real Madrid to win the Supercopa, the Spanish equivalent of the Charity Shield. 2007 – Ex-reds midfielder and Assistant Manager Doug Livermore left as Assistant Manager of Norwich City, having initially joined as Bruce Rioch’s number two in June 1999. International reds on target 2005 - John Arne Riise struck in Norway’s 3-0 win in Malta, with future red Mark González netting as Chile beat Ecuador 3-0 in another friendly, his last goal as an Albacete Balompié player. Future red Stewart Downing made his senior England bow as they were held to a goalless draw by the Netherlands in a friendly at Villa Park. Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard, future reds John Heitinga, Jan Kromkamp, Dirk Kuyt and ex-red Michael Owen all also played in this game. Milan Baroš, El-Hadji Diouf, Jerzy Dudek, Steve Finnan, Djimi Traoré, future reds Robbie Keane, David Martin and Andriy Voronin, and ex-reds Arnaud Bühler, Gareth Roberts and Rigobert Song all also featured in friendlies, with John Toshack taking charge of Wales for the first time in his second spell, as they beat Hungary 2-0 at the Millennium Stadium, with future red Craig Bellamy grabbing both goals in his first international while on loan with Celtic, his only strikes for his country while playing north of the border. Another future red, Fernando Torres, was on target as Spain thumped San Marino 5-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Almeria. Meanwhile, Yossi Benayoun grabbed his last goal as a Real Racing Club de Santander player as Israel were held to a 3-3 draw in Jerusalem by Croatia. 2011 – Daniel Agger netted in Denmark’s 2-1 friendly defeat to England in Copenhagen, with Glen Johnson, Christian Poulsen and future reds Stewart Downing and James Milner also featuring. Dirk Kuyt scored from the spot as the Netherlands beat Austria 3-1 in Eindhoven. Alberto Aquilani, Lucas, Raul Meireles, Danny Wilson, future reds Charlie Adam, Mario Balotelli, John Heitinga, Ragnar Klavan, Dejan Lovren, Joël Matip, Xherdan Shaqiri and Gini Wijnaldum, and ex-reds Alou Diarra, Javier Mascherano, Nikolay Mihaylov and John Arne Riise all also featured in friendlies. International firsts and lasts 2011 – Fernando Torres won his first cap as a Chelsea player in Spain’s 1-0 friendly victory over Colombia in Madrid, with fellow ex-reds Xabi Alonso and Álvaro Arbeloa also in action. Future red Oussama Assaidi made his senior international bow as Morocco beat Niger 3-0 in a friendly in Casablanca. Meanwhile, reserves defender Chris Mavinga played his first game for France Under-20’s while on loan at Koninklijke Racing Club Genk, as they beat England 2-1 in a friendly in Shrewsbury. 2005 - Future red Philipp Degen made his senior international bow in their 2-1 friendly defeat of the United Arab Emirates in Duba, with Stéphane Henchoz also playing. Sotirios Kyrgiakos won his first cap as a Rangers player on the same day as Greece beat future red Christian Poulsen’s Denmark 2-1 in a World Cup qualifier in Piraeus. 2010 – Raheem Sterling won his third and last cap while a Queens Park Rangers player as England Under-16’s drew a friendly 1-1 in Belgium. Other reds games 1957 – We lost a Second Division fixture 3-2 at Leicester City with Billy Liddell and John Evans giving us a two-goal half-time lead. 1952 – We held Derby County to a 1-1 draw at the Baseball Ground. John Morris netted the last of his seven goals against the reds, before Cyril Done scored. 1901 – We lost 2-0 in an FA Cup First Round replay at Notts County, with Scottish winger Tommy Robertson dismissed for the reds. Sami the Dutchman 1996 - Sami Hyypiä made his debut in the Dutch League as Willem II were thumped 5-0 at home by Sander Westerveld’s Vitesse Arnhem. Also in international action 2020 – Future red Alexis Mac Allister featured as Argentina Under-23’s lost an Olympics qualifier 3-0 to Brazil in Colombia. 2018 – Bobby Duncan played for England Under-17’s as they lost 4-0 to Portugal in the Algarve Tournament, with ex-reds Academy Manager Steve Cooper in charge. 2016 – Cooper also managed England Under-17’s in the same competition, as they lost 2-0 to the Netherlands. 1997 – Future red John Arne Riise played for Norway Under-16’s as they beat host nation Portugal 2-0 in the Algarve Tournament. 1993 – Future red Bjørn Tore Kvarme featured as Norway Under-21’s lost 1-0 in Portugal. 1977 – Ray Clemence, Steve Heighway and Kevin Keegan all featured in friendlies. -
A rare treble for the King 1982 - Kenny Dalglish scored a hat-trick as we beat Manchester City 5-2 at Anfield, with Phil Neal and Ian Rush adding the others. In fact, King Kenny only ever bagged two League trebles for the reds, with both coming against the side from Maine Road. 1975 - We also entertained City, with midfielder Peter Cormack nabbing the only goal of the game in his 178th and final reds appearance. Happy birthdays 1947 - Doug Livermore was born in Liverpool. He signed pro terms in November 1965 after starting out with Bolton Wanderers, making just eighteen appearances in our midfield before joining Norwich City in November 1970, but he returned to Anfield as Roy Evans’ Assistant in 1994. He left in November 1998 following Gérard Houllier taking full control. 1945 – Forward John Sealey was born in Wallasey. He signed for £25 as an amateur from Warrington Town in September 1963, scoring as he played his only reds game when the full first team was rested before the 1965 FA Cup Final. He moved on to Chester in June 1966. 1991 – Scottish centre-back Danny Wilson was born in Livingston. He signed from Rangers for an initial £2m fee in July 2010, playing nine senior games and making his full international debut before returning north of the border to sign for Heart Of Midlothian in May 2013 after a loan spell there. 2000 – Centre-half Tom Clayton was born in Rainsford. He turned professional in early 2019, having been with the club since the Under-9’s. He was an unused substitute in our League Cup defeat at Aston Villa in December 2019, moving on to Swindon Town in July 2022. The mighty Finn 2001 - Sami Hyypiä was named Finland’s Sports Person of the Year. All twenty reporters on Finland’s best-selling newspaper Helsingin Sanomat voted for him, such is the respect his fellow countrymen had for his achievements that year. He became only the second team sport player to win this trophy, after Jari Litmanen. Derby joy at last 1919 - We beat Everton at Anfield with Tom Miller scoring a brace in a 3-1 win, to end a run of seven consecutive home derby defeats. Harry Lewis netted our other goal, with Bobby Parker netting one of his eight goals against the reds as left-back Bob Pursell reached a century of League games for us, while making his final reds outing. 1910 - We won at Goodison with Jack Parkinson nabbing the only goal of the game. Yet another unbeaten game 1980 - We were held to a goalless draw at Anfield by Leeds United, our 63rd consecutive home League game without defeat. However, we lost our next home League game, 2-1 to Leicester City. 1965 - We also entertained the Yorkshire side when they left with the points after winning 1-0, with Peter Lorimer on target. Roger Hunt played his 300th reds game that day, with Bill Shankly taking charge of the reds for the 300th time. On the way in 2017 – It was announced that Dutch centre-half Virgil van Dijk would sign from Southampton for a club record £75m on the following 1st January. He struck 23 times in 270 reds games across his first seven seasons, helping us to keep 108 clean sheets while claiming the Premier League title, UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, two League Cups and FA Community Shield. Strikers departing 1984 - Michael Robinson was sold to Queens Park Rangers for £100,000. Joe Fagan brought the Irish international to Anfield from Brighton & Hove Albion in August 1983 for £200,000. In his first season at the club, he won League title and European Cup medals, bagging a total of thirteen goals in 52 games during his Anfield career. He is now a much-respected football pundit and commentator for Spanish television. 2014 – Ex-red Fernando Torres was sold to AC Milan by Chelsea, although he was almost immediately loaned back to his first side Club Atlético de Madrid, re-joining permanently in July 2016. Suspended 1915 - Seven players were suspended for fixing our visit to Old Trafford the previous April, including four reds. We lost the match 2-0 with left-winger Jackie Sheldon and a United player both missing penalties. Sheldon was a former United player, while centre-forward Tom Miller later moved to Old Trafford. Half-back Tommy Fairfoul and full-back Bob Purcell were also involved. They were all offered a pardon in June 1919 on the condition that they apologised. Tons up 2016 – Left-back Alberto Moreno reached a century of reds games as we thumped Stoke City 4-1 at Anfield, despite falling behind early to one of Jon Walters’ seven strikes past us. Adam Lallana and Roberto Firmino put us ahead before the break, with Giannelli Imbula putting through his own net. Daniel Sturridge completed the scoring. 2020 – Fabinho played his hundredth reds game as we were held to a 1-1 draw by West Bromwich Albion in front of just 2,000 fans at Anfield, due to COVID-19 restrictions. Sadio Mané gave us an early lead, but Semi Ajayi headed in a late leveller. 1971 – We lost a top-flight fixture 1-0 at The Hawthorns, with Tony Brown netting one of his eight goals against the reds early on as we dominated against the bottom-of-the-table side. Fifty for George 1898 - George Allan scored his fiftieth reds goal as we held Notts County to a 1-1 draw at Trent Bridge in a First Division fixture. Reds debutants 1938 - Left-winger George Paterson debuted in a 1-0 First Division defeat of Stoke City at Anfield, with Willie Fagan on target. 1979 - Phil Thompson, Kevin Keegan and David Johnson all netted as we beat the Potters 4-0, with Phil Neal also on target from the spot. 1955 - Geoff Twentyman and Tony Rowley were on target as we lost 3-2 in a Second Division meeting at the Victoria Ground, with Twentyman also missing a spot-kick. Andy Graver struck one of his five goals against us, with Frank Bowyer bagging the last of his four past us and Tim Coleman also on the scoresheet in what was Don Welsh’s 200th League game in charge of the reds. 1930 - Keeper Andrew Aitken played his only reds game as we drew 3-3 at Blackburn Rovers, with Gordon Hodgson bagging a brace and forward Alan Scott scoring his first reds goal. Syd Puddefoot netted the final one of his six goals against the reds, with future red Les Bruton and Willie Rankin also scoring. 1913 - We were held to the same score at Anfield in another top-flight meeting, with James Dawson, Tom Miller and Billy Lacey on the scoresheet. Danny Shea struck two of his ten goals past the reds, with Walter Aitkenhead netting the last of his four. Winning in Sheffield 1986 - Our most recent game on this day saw an Ian Rush strike hand us a 1-0 win at Sheffield Wednesday. Defensive deaths 1950 - Custodian Billy McOwen died. He played 27 times for the reds after signing from Darwen in July 1892, helping us to the Second Division title in our first season in the Football League. He moved on to Blackpool in 1894 as he did not want to turn professional on our move into the top flight, as he also worked as a dentist. 1947 – Scottish half-back John McConnell died. He netted just once in 53 first-team appearances leading up to the First World War after signing from Airdrieonians for £80 in April 1909, including one in goal in only his second game! He left the reds to join Aberdeen in May 1912. Hit for four at Anfield 1958 - We beat Rotherham United 4-0 thanks to goals from Fred Morris, Jimmy Harrower and a Louis Bimpson brace. 1960 - The Merry Millers won 1-0 at Millmoor in another Second Division encounter, with Don Weston bagging the first of his four goals against the reds. Souey saved 1983 - Graeme Souness had a late penalty saved by keeper Mark Wallington as we were held to a 2-2 top-flight draw by Leicester City at Anfield. Sammy Lee and Ian Rush had previously struck for the reds, with Alan Smith bagging the first of his nine strikes against the reds and Ian Banks also on target. Honours even against the Gunners We have faced Arsenal three times on this day over the years, with the games ending in one away win apiece, and a draw. 1909 - We held Woolwich Arsenal 1-1 at the Manor Ground, with Jack Parkinson netting and keeper Augustus Beeby saving a penalty from Andy Ducat on his debut. 1927 - We were beaten 2-0 at Anfield, with Harry ‘Smiler’ Chambers playing his 300th League game for the reds, centre-forward Willie Devlin making his nineteenth and last appearance and forward Tom Scott playing for the eighteenth and final time. Jimmy Brain bagged one of his eight goals against the reds, with Sid Hoar also netting. 1947 - Albert Stubbins and Billy Liddell were on target as we won 2-1 at Highbury, with Reg Lewis scoring one of his five goals against us. Tommy’s last 1948 – Left-winger Tommy McLeod played his seventh and final reds game as we lost 2-0 to Manchester United at Anfield. Stan Pearson struck one of his eleven goals against the reds, after Ronnie Burke had opened the scoring. Beating the Blues 1932 - Harold Barton and centre-forward Les Bruton nabbed the goals in a 2-0 win at Chelsea, with Bruton’s being his only reds strike. We have also twice entertained Chelsea. 1920 - Walter Wadsworth and Harry Chambers were on target in a 2-1 win. 1949 - Willie Fagan netted twice as we drew 2-2. Roy Bentley bagged one of his five goals against the reds, with Hugh Billington also on the scoresheet. Other reds games 1976 – We thumped Stoke City 4-0 at Anfield. Phil Thompson, Kevin Keegan and David Johnson added to a Phil Neal penalty, with Denis Smith dismissed for the visitors. 1954 – We lost a Second Division encounter 2-0 at Ipswich Town as Wilf Grant struck the last of his four goals against the reds before Billy Reed netted. However, the Tractor Boys remained at the bottom of the table after this victory. 1937 – Phil Taylor and Berry Nieuwenhuys netted as we drew 2-2 at Birmingham City. 1926 – Burnley held us to a 2-2 draw in L4, with Harry Chambers bagging a brace. Jack Bruton scored one of his four past us, with George Beel nabbing one of his eight. Centre-forward Tommy Reid had to go off injured after half an hour after a bad tackle by Jack Hill. 1921 – Harry Chambers netted twice as we beat Huddersfield Town 2-0 at Anfield, with Clem Stephenson hitting the post with a penalty for the visitors. 1902 – Sam Raybould struck as we lost 3-1 at Bury. Charles Sagar scored the first two of his four goals past us, with Alex Raisbeck putting through his own net. 1897 – Sunderland returned to the Northeast having won 2-0. Treble from the spot 1986 - Jan Mølby scored a hat-trick of penalties at Anfield past ex-red Steve Ogrizovic in our 3-1 League Cup Fourth Round replay defeat of Coventry City. This is reputedly the first reds game that current skipper Steven Gerrard attended. Rafa’s record 2008 - Steven Gerrard headed the only goal of the game as we entertained Olympique de Marseille in a Champions League group game. This was Rafael Benítez’s 66th European game in charge, overtaking Bob Paisley’s club record. Happy birthdays 1915 - Post-war keeper Cyril Sidlow was born in Colwyn Bay in North Wales. He played 165 reds games after signing from Wolverhampton Wanderers for £4,000 in February 1946, helping us claim the League title in 1947. He also played in the 1950 FA Cup Final before joining Notts County in August 1952. 1947 - Ian Ross was born in Glasgow. He signed professional terms in August 1965 and netted four times in 69 appearances spread across six seasons at Anfield. He left for Aston Villa in February 1972 for £60,000, going on to captain them to the Third Division title, as well as the League Cup in 1975. 1949 - Centre-back Trevor Storton was born in Keighley. He had struck eight times in 118 League games for Tranmere Rovers before switching to Anfield for £25,000 in July 1972. He only played twelve times in two years before joining Chester, for whom he turned out more than 400 times. Red centurions 2005 - Steven Gerrard captained the reds for the hundredth time as John Arne Riise bagged the only goal of our Premiership game at Manchester City. This was the Norwegian’s 150th League outing for the reds. 1989 – John Lukic saved a penalty from John Barnes awarded for a Lee Dixon handball. However, we still beat Arsenal 2-1 at Anfield, thanks to later goals by Steve McMahon and Barnes himself as Barry Venison reached a century of reds outings. Alan Smith struck a late consolation for the Gunners, one of his nine goals past us. 1983 - Kenny Dalglish scored his hundredth League goal for the reds as we drew 1-1 at Ipswich Town, with future red John Wark also on target. He therefore became only the second player to score a century of goals in the top flight in both England and Scotland, after Liverpool-born Joe Baker who reached this milestone for Hibernian, Arsenal and Nottingham Forest. 1921 – Danny Shone netted as we lost 3-1 at Middlesbrough, with centre-half Walter Wadsworth playing his hundredth game for the club. Double off the bench 1969 - Two reds substitutes scored in the same game for the first time. Alun Evans and Roger Hunt added to a Tommy Smith penalty, to give us a 3-2 win over Portuguese side Vitória de Setúbal in the Fairs Cup, with Geoff Strong putting through his own net. However, it was not enough to progress to the Third Round, as we went out on the new away goals rule, with the referee having to inform the players that the game was over with the players and supporters waiting around for extra time. This was Hunt’s 285th and last goal for the club while full-back Chris Lawler was playing for the reds for the 300th time. Beating the Mancs We have twice beaten Manchester United at Anfield on this day in history. 1985 - We won our League Cup Fourth Round encounter 2-1, thanks to a Jan Mølby brace inside a minute. The first followed a run from deep inside his own half, with the winner coming from the spot. Phil Neal sat on the bench for his final appearance in a reds match-day squad. Paul McGrath had put the visitors ahead early on. 1910 - Arthur Goddard converted a penalty with Jack Parkinson and Jimmy Stewart also striking as we beat them 3-2 in a First Division meeting. Mixed fortunes against the Seasiders 1938 - We beat Blackpool at Anfield with Bill Kinghorn nabbing the only goal of the game in the tenth minute, his first for the reds. This was George Kay’s hundredth League game in charge. 1932 - We lost 4-1 at Bloomfield Road in another top-flight meeting, despite Dave Wright giving us the lead after just two minutes. Jimmy Hampson netted the last two of his six goals against us, with Albert Butterworth also bagging a brace. Red debutants 1949 – Scottish centre-froward Sam Shields played his only goal for the club as we drew 1-1 at Wolverhampton Wanderers. Dennis Wilshaw struck one of his seven goals against the reds, with Willie Fagan bagging our goal. 1898 – Right-back General Stevenson made his reds bow in a 3-0 win at Nottingham Forest, with Johnny Walker, Andrew McCowie and Hugh Morgan all on target. 1892 – Midfielder Philip Kelly played the first of his three reds games as we won 2-0 at Rossendale United in the Lancashire League, thanks to goals from Jim McBride and John Miller. Hugh and Matt McQueen both missed the game due to the former’s wedding in Scotland the day before. Fulham take a beating 1955 - We thrashed Fulham 7-0 in a Second Division fixture. Alun Evans, Alan Arnell, Geoff Twentyman, Alan A’Court and Jimmy Payne all scored to add to a Billy Liddell brace. 1977 - We secured another big win when we won a First Division fixture 4-0 at Leicester City, our record victory at Filbert Street. David Fairclough, Steve Heighway, Kenny Dalglish and Terry McDermott were all among the goals, with McDermott scoring our 4,000th strike in the top flight. On the way to European glory 1975 - We won 2-1 at Polish side Slask Wroclaw, with goals from Ray Kennedy and John Toshack on an icebound pitch in our UEFA Cup Third Round first leg meeting. We went all the way in the competition that season, to claim it for the second time. 2015 – We beat Girondins de Bordeaux 2-1 at Anfield in a UEFA Europa League group game, on our way to the Final at the end of the season. The visitors scored from a free-kick after keeper Simon Mignolet was penalised for holding on to the ball too long, but James Milner equalised from the spot before Christian Benteke put us in front on the stroke of half time. Red trebles 1960 - Inside-forward Jimmy Harrower bagged a treble as we beat Sheffield United 4-2 in a Second Division game at Anfield. Dave Hickson was also on the scoresheet, with Billy Russell nabbing a brace for the Blades. 1904 - Sam Raybould struck a hat-trick as we beat Millwall Athletic 5-1 in a friendly at Anfield. Robert Robinson bagged the other two goals. Ins and outs 1913 – Winger Jackie Sheldon arrived from Manchester United for £300, going on to grab twenty goals in 147 reds games, playing in our first ever FA Cup Final in 1914. He retired in 1922 after breaking his leg, with his name forever tainted by being the go-between in our match-fixing scandal with Manchester United in April 1915. 1936 – Forward John Shafto signed from Hexham. He struck seven times in twenty outings before war intervened. 1937 – Left-back Ernie Blenkinsop left the reds to join Cardiff City after playing 71 reds games without scoring, having won 26 England caps by the time he arrived from Sheffield Wednesday for £6,500 in March 1934. 1970 – Midfielder Doug Livermore moved on to Norwich City, having made just eighteen appearances. He returned to Anfield as Roy Evans’ Assistant in 1994. He left in November 1998 following Gérard Houllier taking full control. 2020 – Future reds midfielder Wataru Endō signed a new contract with VfB Stuttgart having initially joined on loan from Koninklijke Sint-Truidense Voetbalvereniging in August 2019, making the move permanent the following April. He scored fifteen times in 133 games for Die Roten in total before joining the reds for a reported €19m in August 2023. Stopping off on loan 2009 – Two reserves keepers both left the club on loan. Dean Bouzanis joined Accrington Stanley, while David Martin went to Leeds United. Bouzanis turned out nineteen times for Stanley, while Martin made just one senior appearance before returning to Anfield. 2011 – Bouzanis signed for Oldham Athletic, having been released by the reds the previous May. He played 51 times in two seasons with the Latics. 2010 – Ex-reds reserves forward Craig Lindfield joined Kidderminster Harriers on loan from Accrington Stanley, although he made just one substitute appearance for them. 1925 - Outside-left Albert Pearson joined Stockport County from Rochdale, going on to score seven goals in 72 outings for the Hatters. He had netted four times in 51 reds games after signing from Port Vale in March 1919, returning there two years later. At the World Cup 2022 – Ibrahima Konaté featured for France as they beat Denmark 2-1 in a World Cup group game in Qatar, with future red Alexis Mac Allister playing in Argentina’s 2-0 defeat of Mexico on their way to claiming the trophy for the third time. A’Court for England 1958 - Alan A’Court won his fifth and final cap for England in their 2-2 draw with Wales at Villa Park in the British International Championships. Champions 2013 – Loanee winger Victor Moses was named Nigerian Footballer of the Year. 2004 - Future reds reserves striker Michael Nardiello came off the bench as England Under-16’s were held to a goalless draw at Bloomfield Road by Scotland. England won the Victory Shield that year, although the trophy had already been secured before this match. 2009 – Future red Raheem Sterling also featured in the Victory Shield as England won 2-1 in Scotland. Other reds games 2000 – Emile Heskey struck a late consolation as we lost 2-1 at Newcastle United. Nobby Solano scored one of his four goals against the reds, with Kieron Dyer also netting. 1994 – Tottenham Hotspur held us to a 1-1 draw at Anfield. Robbie Fowler converted a penalty, but Neil Ruddock put through his own net. 1988 – We drew 1-1 with Wimbledon in L4 as Ray Houghton put us in front, but Steve Nicol scored a late own goal. 1966 – We lost 2-1 at West Bromwich Albion. Tony Brown scored one of his eight goals past us with Clive Clark nabbing one of his seven, before Geoff Strong struck. 1927 – We beat Huddersfield Town 4-2 at Anfield. Gordon Hodgson bagged a brace, with Dick Edmed and Tom Bromilow also scoring, with Donald McKinlay having a spot-kick saved. Terry Mac signs on 1974 – Terry McDermott signed from Newcastle United for £175,000. He struck 81 times in 329 reds games, helping us to three European Cups, four League titles, two League Cups, UEFA Super Cup and two FA Charity Shields. In 1980 he became the first player to win both the PFA and Football Writers’ Player Of The Year Awards in the same season. He returned to St. James’ Park in September 1982. Red trebles 2004 - Milan Baroš grabbed his only reds treble, including two penalties, as we beat Crystal Palace 3-2 at Anfield. This remains our only hat-trick against the Eagles to date. 1982 - Ian Rush scored a hat-trick as we beat Coventry City 4-0 in a League match at Anfield. Kenny Dalglish netted the other goal, while Bruce Grobbelaar conceded a penalty but saved the resultant spot-kick taken by Mark Hateley. On the same day, future red Glenn Hysén played as Sweden won a European Championships qualifier 1-0 in Cyprus. Goals galore 1996 - We beat Charlton Athletic 4-1 in a League Cup Third Round replay, with goals from Mark Wright, Jamie Redknapp and a Robbie Fowler brace. 1965 - Northampton Town headed home on the wrong end of a 5-0 scoreline. Ian St. John, Roger Hunt, Ian Callaghan and Peter Thompson were all on the scoresheet that day, with Willie Stevenson netting from the spot. Derby despair 1971 - We lost at Goodison Park with future red David Johnson grabbing the only goal of the game in his first Merseyside derby, the first of his four goals past us. Our cause was not helped when Larry Lloyd limped off with a serious knee injury in the first half that kept him out for two months. Referee Clive Thomas awarded an amazing 55 free-kicks in a niggly game. This was Bill Shankly’s 500th League game in charge. Dan the man 2006 - Daniel Agger was named Danish Young Player of the Year. He had turned out just sixteen times for the reds by this stage, having arrived from Brøndby IF for £5.8m that January. Seven for Cyril 1943 - Cyril Done scored an amazing seven goals as we trounced Chester 9-0 in a Wartime League fixture at Anfield. Stan Palk and Andy Beattie struck the others. Ins and out 1936 – Centre-half Norman Low left the reds for Newport County. He only played thirteen times since arriving at Anfield in October 1933, deputising for Tom Bradshaw. 2023 – Midfielder Ben Trueman signed pro terms with the reds, having joined the Academy at the age of five. 1965 - Doug Livermore signed pro terms after starting out with Bolton Wanderers, making just eighteen appearances in our midfield before joining Norwich City in November 1970, but he returned to Anfield as Roy Evans’ Assistant in 1994. He left in November 1998 following Gérard Houllier taking full control. Lucas off 2010 - Lucas Leiva was sent off in stoppage time of our 2-0 League defeat at Stoke City. Ricardo Fuller put the home side ahead after the break with Kenwyne Jones doubling their lead in the final minute, the first of his three goals past us. Final walk in the park 1920 - We faced Bradford Park Avenue for the sixth and final time when Dick Forshaw struck a brace in a 3-1 win, with Harry Chambers grabbing our first goal. He joined the reds from Leith Athletic in May 1897, netting three times in twelve reds games before he returned to his former club for free in August 1898. Recent internationals on target 2021 – Neco Williams bagged his final Wales goal as a reds player in their 5-1 thumping of Belarus in a World Cup qualifier in Cardiff, with ex-reds Joe Allen, Danny Ward and Harry Wilson all also featuring. Terence Miles scored as England Under-18’s won a shoot-out after their meeting with Belgium in Spain ended goalless. Ex-red Luis Suárez scored in his fourth consecutive game, converting a penalty as Uruguay won a World Cup qualifier 3-0 in Colombia, with Darwin Núñez nabbing his only goal as a SL Benfica player and future red Luis Díaz on the losing side. Igor on his way 2000 - Igor Bišcan was granted a work permit by the Department of Employment, and so was free to join the reds from Dinamo Zagreb when the Croatian season broke for winter at the beginning of December. He moved on to Panathinaikos in July 2005, after three goals in 118 reds games, and helping us to claim two League Cups, UEFA Super Cup and FA Charity Shield, as well as playing a crucial role on the road to Istanbul. Heading to Brazil 2013 – Luis Suárez featured as Uruguay thumped Jordan 5-0 in the first leg of their World Cup play-off in Amman. 2014 – Suárez again represented his country, scoring during the game as well as converting in a penalty-shoot that Costa Rica won 7-6 after their friendly had finished 3-3 in Montevideo. Heading off 1998 - Reserves keeper Tony Warner joined Celtic on loan. He made three first-team appearances for the Bhoys, keeping just one clean sheet. 2018 – Ex-reds midfielder Joe Cole announced his retirement from playing, with Harry Kewell being sacked as Manager of Notts County on the same day. Happy birthday Brucie 1957 - Bruce Grobbelaar was born in Durban, South Africa. Our eccentric keeper signed from Vancouver Whitecaps for £250,000 in March 1981 and played 628 times for the reds, helping us to six League titles, one European Cup, three FA Cups, three League Cups and three FA Charity Shields. Other birthdays 1948 - Larry Lloyd was born in Bristol. He is one of a rare breed to leave Anfield in his prime and go on to better things – helping Nottingham Forest to two European Cups, one League title, League Cup and FA Charity Shield. He had won League and UEFA Cup medals after joining from Bristol Rovers for £50,000 in April 1969, appearing 218 times and notching five times. He was sold to Coventry City for £240,000 in August 1974. 1988 - Right-back and former reserves skipper Stephen Darby was born in Liverpool. He made the move to Melwood in the summer of 2006 after skippering the reds to FA Youth Cup glory earlier that year, also featuring as they retained the trophy the following year. He made six senior appearances as well as sitting on the bench on a further thirteen occasions, moving on to Bradford City in July 2012 after several loan spells away from Anfield. He retired from professional football in September 2018 after being diagnosed with motor neuron disease. 1940 - Inside-forward Willie Carlin was born in Liverpool. He signed pro terms in May 1958 but only made one first-team appearance for the club, a 1-1 draw at Stoke City in October 1959, and moved on to Halifax Town in August 1962, going on to make a total of over 400 League appearances for a variety of clubs. Twelve in a row 1990 - We won our twelfth successive League match, a new club record, as Derby County went down 2-0 at Anfield, thanks to a Ray Houghton strike and a penalty from Peter Beardsley past Peter Shilton. Unfortunately, this run came to an end in our next game, as we drew 1-1 at Norwich City a fortnight later. Being sold 2010 – The club announced that the Board had agreed the sale of the club to New England Sports Ventures. Eventually, the deal went through after a series of delaying tactics by George Gillett Jr. and Tom Hicks. Double capture 1966 – Full-back Stuart Mason and left-back Peter Wall signed from Wrexham for a combined £35,000. Mason never made the first team, while Wall failed to score in 42 first-team appearances in three and a half years at Anfield, but had greater success with his next club, Crystal Palace, whom he joined in May 1970 for £30,000. He spent eight seasons at Selhurst Park, playing over 200 times for them with one of his rare goals coming at Anfield in January 1972, although we still won 4-1. 1950 – Outside-right Don Woan signed from Bootle Athletic for £1,000, but only played two senior games before moving on to Leyton Orient in November 1951. A baptism of fire 1991 - Rob Jones made his reds bow, just two days after signing from Crewe Alexandra. It was a real baptism of fire, as he helped us to claim a goalless draw at Manchester United. Gary Ablett and United’s Mark Hughes were both dismissed. King Kenny on top 2006 - Kenny Dalglish came out on top in the club official website’s first 100 Players Who Shook The Kop poll, finishing ahead of Steven Gerrard, Ian Rush, Robbie Fowler and John Barnes. The votes were cast by over 110,000 fans across the summer. Bosses in and out 2001 - John Toshack was appointed Manager of Saint-Étienne. He had been in the side when we famously saw off Les Verts in 1977, but only lasted three months at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard before quitting. 2006 - Ex-reserves forward John Durnin resigned as a Coach at Southport, apparently due to other coaching and playing commitments. 2008 – Another former second-string striker, Mike Newell, was named as Grimsby Town boss, leading them to 22nd in League Two at the end of his first season. John Boag struck the last of his six goals past us, with Archie Goodall converting a spot-kick. 1906 – Inside-left Bill McPherson scored on his reds debut as we lost 2-1 at Woolwich Arsenal’s Manor Ground in another First Division fixture. David Neave bagged the first two of his four goals against the reds. 1970 – Midfielder Doug Livermore played his eighteenth and last reds game as we lost a League Cup Third Round tie 2-0 at Swindon Town, with Don Rodgers bagging a quick-fire brace for the Robins. Wadsworth passes on 1951 - Centre-half Walter Wadsworth died. He scored eight times in 242 reds games, many alongside his brother, outside-right Harold. He had signed on from Ormskirk as an amateur in April 1912 and remained with the club for fourteen years, interrupted by the First World War, helping us to two consecutive League titles in the 1920’s before joining Bristol City in May 1926. Mixed derby fortunes 1917 - Inside-forward Harry Lewis scored all the goals in a Wartime League derby at Anfield as we won 4-0. 1923 - We lost 1-0 at Goodison Park in a top-flight match, with Wilf Chadwick on target. Mixed fortunes against Rovers 1956 - We lost 3-2 at home to Blackburn Rovers in a Second Division fixture, with Eric Anderson bagging his 22nd and final reds goal, with Billy Liddell also on target. Roy Vernon netted the first of his six strikes past us, with Eddie Crossan and Bryan Douglas also scoring. 1987 - We won a League Cup tie at Anfield with John Aldridge heading the only goal of the game very late on to take us through to the Third Round 2-1 on aggregate as John Wark appeared for the 108th and final time. 1938 – We were held to a 2-2 draw in a Lancashire Senior Cup First Round Replay, with Ron Jones and George Paterson scoring. Other big wins 1979 - We beat Bristol City 4-0 at Anfield in a top-flight match with David Johnson, Kenny Dalglish, Ray Kennedy and Terry McDermott all on the scoresheet. 1992 - Don Hutchison, Jamie Redknapp, Mark Walters and Ian Rush all struck as we came behind to finally see off Third Division Chesterfield 4-1 in the League Cup Second Round at Saltergate, having drawn the home leg 4-4. 1945 - Jack Balmer nabbed a brace with Harold Kaye and Billy Liddell also on target as we beat Bradford City 4-1 in a Wartime League match in L4. First and lasts against the Blades 1894 - Forward Albert Worgan played his second and final reds game as we were held to a 2-2 draw by Sheffield United at Anfield in a top-flight fixture. Outside-right Neil Kerr struck the first of his three reds goals with Harry Bradshaw also on target. Defender James Cameron made the first of his four appearances for the club in this game. Internationals on target 2016 – Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino both struck as Brazil thumped Bolivia 5-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Natal, with this being Firmino’s first goal as a reds player. Meanwhile, Joe Allen scored his first goal since moving to Stoke City as Wales held Austria to a 2-2 draw in Vienna, with future red Diogo Jota scoring his first goal for Portugal Under-21’s as they drew a European Championships qualifying draw in Hungary. Caoimhín Kelleher, future reds Thiago Alcântara, Alisson Becker, Federico Chiesa and Kostas Tsimikas, and ex-reds Sebastián Coates, Javier Mascherano, Brad Smith and Luis Suárez also featured for their countries. 2017 – Joe Allen struck for Wales again as they won a World Cup qualifier 1-0 in Georgia, with Ben Woodburn also featuring. Dominic Solanke bagged his first goal for England Under-21’s in their 3-1 European Championships qualifying defeat of Scotland at the Riverside Stadium, with Joe Gomez winning his seventh and last cap at this level and Trent Alexander-Arnold also in action. Future red Thiago Alcântara scored his first goal for Spain as they beat Albania 3-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Alicante. On the same day, ex-red Nuri Şahin won his last cap in his second spell as a Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund player, as Turkey were beaten 3-0 at home by Iceland in a World Cup qualifier, with Marko Grujić and future reds Wataru Endō and Ozan Kabak also representing their countries. Aiming for the Far East 2001 - A host of reds played in World Cup qualifiers around Europe. Future red Milan Baroš was on target in the Czech Republic’s 6-0 thumping of Bulgaria in Prague, with Vladimír Šmicer coming on as a substitute to win his fiftieth cap. Ex-red Jim Magilton also reached his half century as Northern Ireland won 1-0 in Malta. Nick Barmby made his 23rd and last appearance for England, with Robbie Fowler, Steven Gerrard and Emile Heskey also starting as their 2-2 draw with Greece at Old Trafford took them through to the finals. Steve McManaman came off the bench to claim his 37th, and also final, cap. In the same group, Sami Hyypiä and Jari Litmanen were both in the Finnish side that held Germany to a goalless draw in Gelsenkirchen that ensured the Germans had to negotiate a play-off. Ex-red Christian Ziege appeared for the Germans. Jerzy Dudek, John Arne Riise, ex-reds Don Hutchison, Mark Kennedy and Steve Staunton, and future reds Craig Bellamy, Steve Finnan, Paul Jones and Bolo Zenden all also represented their countries on that day. H & H in opposition 1996 - Future reds centre-back pairing Stéphane Henchoz and Sami Hyypiä faced each other in a World Cup qualifier in Helsinki, with Switzerland beating Finland 3-2. More reds games 2002 – Michael Owen netted the only goal of Chelsea’s visit to Anfield late on. 1984 – West Bromwich Albion held us to a goalless draw in L4. 1973 – We beat Newcastle United 2-1 at home. Peter Cormack struck before Alec Lindsay converted a penalty. 1962 – Roger Hunt nabbed the only goal as Bolton Wanderers visited Anfield. 1951 – We lost 2-0 at Charlton Athletic. Billy Kiernan scored one of his five goals against the reds before future red John Evans bagged the first of his five past us. 1934 – Gordon Hodgson struck our consolation as we lost 4-1 at Sheffield Wednesday. Harry Burgess struck one of his nine goals against the reds, with Ellis Rimmer netting the last of his five and Mark Hooper scoring the final two of his eight. 1928 – Jimmy McDougall was on target as we drew 1-1 at West Ham United as Stan Earle equalised with one of his four goals past us. Off on loan 2020 – Serbian midfielder Marko Grujić joined Porto on loan, netting twice in 36 appearances before signing on permanently for £10.5m in July 2021. On the same day, Colombian defender Anderson Arroyo moved to Salamanca Club de Fútbol UDS in Spain for the season, playing 21 times. Young Czechs on target 1998 - Future red Milan Baroš scored in the Czech Republic Under-18’s 2-1 European Championships qualifying win in the Ukraine. 2000 - He scored for the Under-21’s as they beat Iceland 2-1 in Liberec in another qualifier. 1995 - Vladimír Šmicer bagged a brace as the Czech Republic Under-21’s won their European Championships qualifier in Belarus 3-0. Mixed fortunes for the youngsters 2000 - Stephen Wright was sent off for England Under-21’s in their 1-1 draw with Germany at Pride Park in a European Championships qualifier. 2006 – Scott Carson and future red James Milner featured as England Under-21’s beat Germany 1-0 in the first leg of their European Championships Play-off in Coventry. 2009 – Hungary Under-20’s beat their Czech Republic counterparts 4-3 on penalties after their World Championship Finals Round of 16 match in Egypt had ended 2-2. Péter Gulácsi saved three spot-kicks in the shoot-out, with Krisztián Németh’s effort being saved. 2021 – Future red Federico Chiesa played as Italy lost 2-1 to Spain in their UEFA Nations League Semi-final in Milan. Meanwhile, Jakub Ojrzyński featured for Poland Under-19’s as they lost 3-1 to Finland in a European Championships qualifier in Grodzisk Wielkopolski. 2015 – Trent Alexander-Arnold played for England Under-17’s in their 8-0 friendly thumping of DR Congo in Burton, with ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper in charge. 2011 – Jon Flanagan, Jordan Henderson, Martin Kelly, Dani Pacheco, Danny Wilson and future red Fabio Borini were all on the winning side for their respective Under-21’s in European Championships qualifiers, with Arsenal’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain bagging a treble, his first goals at this level as Pacheco won his second and last Under-21’s cap and Borini dismissed. 2007 – Pacheco also played for Spain Under-17’s as they drew a European Championships qualifier 2-2 in Wales. -
Michael’s golden ball 2002 - We beat Derby County 2-0 at Anfield, with double goalscorer Michael Owen being presented with the Ballon d’Or trophy for European Football of the Year before the match. A minute’s silence was also observed before kick-off, in memory of the bereaved and survivors of the Hillsborough disaster. Steven Gerrard and Danny Murphy both made their hundredth League appearances for the reds in this game. On the same day, young reserves forward John Miles left for Stoke City on a free transfer. He only made one senior appearance for the Potters before moving on to Crewe Alexandra after being released at the end of that season. On the way to Rome 1977 - We reached our first European Cup Final after beating Zürich 3-0 at Anfield in the second leg of our Semi-final, with Jimmy Case netting a brace and Kevin Keegan grabbing the other, to go through 6-1 on aggregate as forward Alan Waddle made his 22nd and final reds appearance, as a substitute. Keegan said afterwards, “The only reason I have stayed here is to get to the European Cup Final, and now I’ve done that.” Trouncing the Toffees 2016 – Daniel Sturridge reached a half century of reds goals as we thumped Everton 4-0 at Anfield. Divock Origi and Mamadou Sakho, in his final reds game, both headed in shortly before the break before Ramiro Funes Mori was dismissed and then Sturridge struck. The scoring was rounded out by Philippe Coutinho. 1974 - We were held to a goalless draw in the Anfield derby. We go again 2014 – We secured a joint club record eleventh consecutive League win when we won 3-2 at Norwich City, also a joint club record sixth straight away League victory. This was also a joint club record 25th consecutive top-flight League game in which we had netted. Raheem Sterling and Luis Suárez struck early on as the Uruguayan became the first red to score thirty League goals in a season since Ian Rush in 1987, with Gary Hooper pulling a goal back after the break. Sterling netted again with Robert Snodgrass heading in as we hung on for victory. This left the reds needing just seven points from the last three games to claim the title. Happy birthdays 1902 - Left-back Ernie Blenkinsop was born in Cudworth, Yorkshire. He played 71 reds games without scoring, having won 26 England caps by the time he arrived from Sheffield Wednesday for £6,500 in March 1934. He moved on to Cardiff City in November 1937. 1996 – Brazilian loanee midfielder Arthur Melo was born in Goiânia. He joined on loan from Juventus for €4.5m in September 2022, but only made one senior reds appearance as a late substitute at SSC Napoli later that month, due to injury. Red centurions 2005 - Milan Baroš played his hundredth reds game as we won 2-1 at Portsmouth in a League match, with Fernando Morientes scoring before Diomansy Kamara equalised, with Luis García bagging the winner. 1896 – Forward Malcolm McVean reached a century of reds appearances as we were held to a goalless draw at Small Heath’s Coventry Road ground in a Test Match as we attempted to make it back into the top flight, eventually unsuccessfully. A new boss 1991 - Graeme Souness got off to a good start as Manager as we beat Norwich City 3-0 at Anfield in his first match in charge. The goals came from John Barnes, Ray Houghton and Ian Rush. 1988 - We also faced the Canaries, holding them to a goalless draw at Carrow Road as they became the first team against whom we had twice drawn a blank in the League that season, so holding off our League title celebrations for another three days. Reds debutants 1910 - Left-back Donald McKinlay made the first of his 434 reds appearances in a top-flight fixture with Nottingham Forest at Anfield, with Jack Parkinson scoring four goals in our stunning 7-3 win. Sam Bowyer added a brace, with Jimmy Stewart also on target. John Derrick struck twice for the visitors, with Tom Marrison also on target. 1957 - We also entertained Forest, winning our Second Division meeting 3-1, thanks to goals from Alan A’Court, Billy Liddell and Tony Rowley. James Barratt bagged the last of his four goals past us. 1968 - Doug Livermore, who became the club’s Assistant Manager under Roy Evans, made his reds bow in a 1-0 League defeat at West Ham United, with Martin Peters netting one of his fourteen strikes against the reds. Livermore only played eighteen games for us during his five-year spell as a player at Anfield. Racing to a hat-trick 1929 - Harry Race netted three goals in our 5-2 home League win over Sunderland. Gordon Hodgson bagged our other two goals, with Dave Halliday netting two of his thirteen goals against the reds. Adam Allan was dismissed for the visitors. 1931 – Gordon Hodgson grabbed a treble as we thumped Norwich City 6-0 in a Monday night Hospital Charity Cup encounter at their old ground, The Nest. Gordon Gunson bagged a brace with Dave Wright also on target. George returns 1898 - Centre-forward George Allan re-signed for the club from Celtic for £50. He had originally joined from Leith Athletic for £100 in June 1895 and was the first red to be capped by Scotland, top scoring as we claimed the Second Division title in 1896, and again the following season. He returned north of the border in May 1897 for just a season, bagging a total of 56 goals in 96 reds games before sadly dying of tuberculosis in October 1899 aged just 24. Beginning and end 1985 – Gary Gillespie grabbed the first of his sixteen reds goals as we beat Newcastle United 3-1 at Anfield, with John Wark and Paul Walsh also on the scoresheet. 1963 – Full-back Allan Jones played his fifth and last reds game as we drew 0-0 at Fulham, with inside-forward Jimmy Melia making his 105th consecutive appearance for the reds. Bruce gets the elbow 1987 - Bruce Grobbelaar broke his elbow as we lost 1-0 at Manchester United, with Peter Davenport bagging the late winner. 1953 - We also visited Old Trafford for a First Division match, with Sammy Smyth on target as we lost 3-1. Forward Arthur Rowley played his eleventh and final reds game with Bryan Williams appearing for the 34th and last time as Stan Pearson scored one of his eleven goals against the reds, with Jack Rowley netting one of his six past us and Johnny Berry also on target. Clean sheets against the Shakers and Blues We have twice beaten Chelsea in First Division meetings on this day in history, without conceding. 1908 - Tom Chorlton and Bill McPherson netted in the last ten minutes of our first ever trip to Stamford Bridge, with left-half Jim Bradley playing his hundredth League game for us. This was McPherson’s seventeenth and final reds goal in his 55th and last match for the club. 1935 - Fred Howe and Lance Carr struck in L4, to add to braces from Vic Wright and Berry Nieuwenhuys. Centre-half Tom ‘Tiny’ Bradshaw was making his 200th League appearance for the club, while left-half John Browning made his senior bow. We have also twice kept clean sheets against Bury in the top-flight. 1899 - Inside-right Johnny Walker netted the only goal of the game at Anfield. 1901 - We shared a goalless ninety minutes at Gigg Lane. Sadio honoured 2017 – Forward Sadio Mané was named in the PFA Team of the Year after a fine first campaign in L4. For Bill 1932 – Gordon Hodgson struck twice as we beat a Shelbourne Select side in a testimonial match for forward Billy Lacey at Dalymount Park in Dublin. Jari on the move 2011 - Jari Litmanen re-signed for HJK Helsinki, helping them to secure a League and Cup double later that year. Double farewell 1895 – Left-back Duncan McLean made his 82nd and final reds appearance in our 5-2 Anfield defeat by Preston North End, with outside-left Hugh McQueen playing for the 61st and last time. Harry Bradshaw struck both our goals, with Jackie Pierce nabbing a brace for the visitors. Adam Henderson, Tom Smith and John Cunningham also struck for the Lilywhites. A young Saint no more 1960 - Future red Ian St. John won his second and final Scotland Under-23’s cap in a 1-1 draw with Belgium in Ghent. Green again 1918 – Thomas Green scored in his fifth consecutive game as we beat Stockport County 4-2 in a Wartime League match at Anfield, our last match of the season. Harry Lewis struck twice, including once from the spot, with Arthur Goddard also on the scoresheet. Other reds games 1992 – We were thumped 4-0 at Arsenal. Ian Wright struck the first two of his seven goals against the reds, with David Hillier and Anders Limpar also on target. 1912 – Jimmy Stewart netted as we beat Sheffield United 2-0 at Anfield, before Arthur Goddard converting a twice-taken penalty, having hit the post at the first attempt. 1907 – We lost 2-0 at Notts County. Bruce the champion 1981 – Bruce Grobbelaar kept a clean sheet as Zimbabwe beat Malawi 4-0 in the Final of the Independence Cup in Harare. Also in international action 1994 – Ex-red Jim Magilton played as Northern Ireland beat Liechtenstein 4-1 in a European Championships qualifier at Windsor Park. Meanwhile, Ian Rush, Ronnie Whelan future reds Gary McAllister, Phil Babb, Øyvind Leonhardsen, Jason McAteer and ex-red Steve Staunton all played in friendlies, with Roy Hodgson taking charge of Switzerland. 2005 – Future red Ragnar Klavan represented Estonia as they lost a friendly 2-1 to Norway in Tallinn. 2011 – Future red Mohamed Salah featured for Egypt Under-20’s in their 1-0 defeat to Mali in an African Championship Finals group game in South Africa. 2019 – Bobby Duncan and Curtis Jones both played for England Under-18’s as they thumped Japan 4-1 in a friendly in Dubai.
