Happy birthdays 1972 - Markus Babbel was born in Munich. He arrived on a free transfer from Bayern München in June 2000 and was a vital member of the treble-winning team bagging six goals in 73 games, until he was struck down by Guillain-Barré syndrome, moving to VfB Stuttgart on a free transfer in July 2004 after a loan spell at Blackburn Rovers. 1998 – Irish centre-half Conor Masterson was born in Celbridge, signing on from Lucan United for £900,000 on his sixteenth birthday. He was released in the summer of 2019 having failed to break through and is now with Gillingham. 1978 - Icelandic former reserves forward Haukur Ingi Guðnason was born in Keflavik. He never made an official senior appearance for the reds after signing from his hometown club in December 1997, returning there three years later after just three appearances on our bench in May 1998. Anfield christened 1888 - The first ever League game at Anfield was played as Everton beat Accrington 2-1. On the losing side 1894 - We suffered our first ever defeat in the Football League, going down 2-1 at home to Aston Villa in our third First Division game, having remained unbeaten through the whole of our debut season in the Second Division. Big Anfield wins 1917 - We thumped Port Vale 4-0 in a Wartime League game thanks to two from Thomas Bennett and further goals from Harry Lewis and Arthur Metcalf. 1979 - We beat Coventry City by the same score in the First Division, with David Johnson nabbing a brace and Jimmy Case and Kenny Dalglish also netting. 1928 - Gordon Hodgson struck twice with Dick Edmed, Jimmy McDougall and Tom Reid all also on target as we thumped Leicester City 6-3 in another top-flight match, with right-back Bob Done scoring the first of his thirteen reds goals. Future reds at the treble 1999 - Yossi Benayoun struck a hat-trick for Israel in their 8-0 trouncing of San Marino in a Euro 2000 qualifier in Tel-Aviv. On the same day, Christian Ziege bagged a hat-trick as Germany thumped Northern Ireland 4-0 in a Euro 2000 qualifier in Dortmund, with fellow future red Markus Babbel also in action. Award winners 2020 - Trent Alexander-Arnold was named PFA Young Player of the Year, with Jordan Henderson, Sadio Mané, Andy Robertson and Virgil van Dijk all also being named in the PFA Team of the Year, following our runaway League title win. Rhian Brewster played for England Under-21’s for the eighth and last time before leaving Anfield in their 2-1 European Championships qualifying win in Austria. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez, future reds Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch, and ex-reds Simon Mignolet and Raheem Sterling all also featured for their countries. 2018 – Mohamed Salah bagged a brace, with one of his goals coming as he converted the rebound from his own penalty, as he also had another spot-kick saved in Egypt’s 6-0 trouncing of Niger in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Alexandria. Death of a legend 2001 - Legendary forward Billy Liddell died in Liverpool of Alzheimer’s disease. He joined the reds in July 1938 while still only sixteen, and left the club 23 years later, having struck 228 times in 534 games. His only club honour was the League title in 1947, although he also played in the FA Cup Final three years later. 1984 – Scottish left-half Jimmy McDougall died in Allerton. He signed from Partick Thistle in April 1928 and went on to be nominated into the club’s official Hall of Fame for the 1930’s, having struck twelve times in 356 games for the reds. He moved on to South Liverpool in May 1938 and later set up a successful chandlery business in Liverpool. Moving out 2007 - Luis García re-signed for Club Atlético de Madrid for around £4m after thirty strikes, including five in our glorious Champions League campaign in 2005, in 121 games. He had also helped us to claim the UEFA Super Cup and FA Community Shield. On the same day, keeper Nikolay Mihaylov signed from Levski Sofia. However, he was sold to Twente in the Netherlands for €1.8m in February 2010 after a loan spell, as work permit problems meant he was unable to feature for the reds. 2013 – Jonjo Shelvey left for Swansea City for an initial £5m fee, after seven strikes in 69 reds outings since signing from Charlton Athletic for £1.7m in May 2010. On the same day, ex-reds forward Djibril Cissé signed for Russian side Kuban Krasnodar, having been released by Queens Park Rangers five days earlier. 1962 – Scottish keeper Bert Slater was sold to Dundee who were under the management of his brother Bob. He arrived from Falkirk in a swap deal for Tommy Younger in June 1959 and played 111 times, winning a Second Division title medal in 1962. 1931 – Forward Bob Clark left the reds for Nottingham Forest after eleven goals in 42 outings. He had signed from Newcastle United for £3,000 in January 1928, having helped them to the League title the year before. 2021 – Polish reserves keeper Kamil Grabara left the club for Danish side F.C. København, playing 126 times in his first three seasons. 2023 – Left-back Owen Beck joined Dundee on loan, netting twice in 28 outings before being recalled to Anfield the following January. Can he? 2014 – Midfielder Emre Can signed from Bayer 04 Leverkusen for £9.75m. He struck fourteen times in 167 outings, moving on to Juventus in June 2018 after his contract expired. Defensive signings 2008 – Right-back Philipp Degen signed on a free transfer from Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund on a four-year deal. Injuries restricted him to just thirteen largely unconvincing senior outings. 1894 – Scottish keeper Harry McNaughton signed from St. Bernard’s. He only made one senior appearance, keeping a clean sheet in the Anfield derby in the October of that year. Warnock sent to Coventry 2003 - Stephen Warnock joined Coventry City on loan. He struck three times in 49 games for the Sky Blues as they finished twelfth in the First Division, becoming their Player of the Year. He finally made the break-through at Anfield under Rafael Benítez, but only bagged one goal in 67 reds games before leaving for Blackburn Rovers in January 2007. On the same day, ex-reserves forward Jon Newby joined Huddersfield Town on a free transfer from Bury. He failed to find the net in fifteen games for the Terriers. 2004 - Bruno Cheyrou joined Olympique de Marseille on loan. He had struck five times in 48 games in his one year at Anfield and bagged one goal in nineteen League games for the Mediterranean outfit. The King returns 2009 - Kenny Dalglish was appointed to a role with the Academy and as a Club Ambassador. International firsts 1977 - Bruce Grobbelaar won his only senior international cap for Rhodesia before the country’s name change to Zimbabwe. They were held to a 1-1 draw by South Africa in a friendly in Salisbury. 2003 – Future red Ragnar Klavan made his senior bow as Estonia were thumped 5-1 by Lithuania in a friendly in Valga. 2021 – Jordan Henderson struck his first goal for England in their 4-0 defeat of Ukraine in their European Championships Quarter-final in Rome, with ex-red Raheem Sterling also featuring. Happy birthday Doc 1958 – Former club doctor Mark Waller was born in Northampton. A reds fan since moving to Liverpool in 1977, he was in this role from 1993 until June 2010. 1926 - Keeper Charlie Ashcroft was born in Chorley. He signed for the reds in December 1943 and appeared 89 times before joining Ipswich Town in June 1955. Coaching changes 2011 – The appointment of Kevin Keen as First Team Coach was announced. Meanwhile, Iván Ortega left the reds to join Chelsea as Sports Therapist. Keen left the club in June 2012 after Kenny Dalglish’s sacking. 2012 - Keen joined West Bromwich Albion as Joint-Assistant Head Coach, working under Steve Clarke again until they were both sacked in December 2013. 2023 – Roy Hodgson signed a new contract as Manager of Crystal Palace, while Steven Gerrard was appointed Al-Ettifaq boss in Saudi Arabia. Other management moves 1996 - Ex-reds player and boss Graeme Souness was appointed Manager of Southampton. He was in charge at The Dell for less than a year, during which time he guided them to just one point clear of relegation from the top flight, and famously signed Ali Dia, George Weah’s alleged cousin. 2009 - Paul Ince was re-appointed Manager of MK Dons. He led them to mid-table in League One before resigning at the end of the season. 2014 – Former reds coach Paco Herrera was named as Manager of second division side Unión Deportiva Las Palmas for the first time, who are based in the Canary Islands. He was sacked in October 2015, but returned to the job in November 2018, but only for another four months before being dismissed again. Pelle off 2005 - Mauricio Pellegrino signed for Deportivo Alavés, having been released by the reds two weeks earlier. The Argentine centre-back had rarely impressed in his thirteen reds games, after signing from Valencia on a free transfer in January. He had arrived at Anfield with an impressive reputation, having previously won the Spanish League three times and the UEFA Cup, as well as appearing in two Champions League Finals. Mixed fortunes at the World Cup 2018 – Xherdan Shaqiri won his last cap as a Stoke City player as Switzerland lost 1-0 to Sweden in a Round of 16 game in Saint Petersburg. Meanwhile, Jordan Henderson had a spot-kick saved as England progressed past Colombia at the same stage after a penalty shoot-out in Moscow. Ex-red Raheem Sterling also featured. 2010 – Javier Mascherano skippered Argentina as they were thumped 4-0 by Germany in their World Cup Quarter-final in Cape Town, with Maxi Rodríguez also in action. On the move 2002 - Crewe Alexandra released Phil Charnock, who had been the youngest ever red to appear in European competition, back in September 1992. He had played 183 times for the Alex, moving on to Port Vale later that summer. 2006 - Reserves defender David Raven signed for Carlisle United after just four senior reds appearances. He scored once in 154 games for the Cumbrians before joining Shrewsbury Town in July 2010. 2009 - Daniel Sturridge joined Chelsea from Manchester City for an initial £3.5m after six strikes in 32 games for the Sky Blues. Red on the committee 2003 - Former reds Director Noel White was re-elected as Chairman of the FA’s International Committee. The former Liverpool Chairman, who was on the Board of Directors at Anfield for 21 years until his resignation in October 2006, was confirmed in the post for a further year, having first been elected in 1994. Also on the move 2008 - Florent Sinama-Pongolle joined Club Atlético de Madrid from Real Club Recreativo de Huelva for £8m after 22 goals in 68 games. On the same day, ex-reserves forward Andy Parkinson moved to Cambridge United on a free transfer from Notts County. He returned to Anfield as Chief Scout in 1967, a post he held for nineteen years, helping to bring players such as Ray Clemence, Alan Hansen, Steve Heighway, Phil Neal and Ian Rush to the club. He died aged 74 in February 2004. 1969 - Steve Staunton was born in Drogheda. He arrived from Dundalk for £20,000 in September 1986, netting seven times in 148 reds appearances across his two spells at Anfield, helping us to our last League title in 1990, and the FA Cup a year earlier. 1913 – Irish reserves centre-half Matt O’Mahoney was born in Mullinavat, County Kilkenny. In comes Soto 2009 – Greek centre-half Sotirios Kyrgiakos signed from A.E.K Athens for £2m, following the summer departure of Sami Hyypiä. Soto bagged three goals in 49 largely solid performances at the back, becoming something of a cult figure for his no-nonsense style before moving to VfL Wolfsburg on a free transfer two years later. On the same day, reserves left-back Robbie Threlfall joined Northampton Town on loan. He turned out five times in his one month with the Cobblers. Trebles at either end 1954 - Forward Tony Rowley scored a hat-trick on his reds debut as we beat Doncaster Rovers 3-2 in our season opener at Anfield. Kit Lawlor bagged a brace for the visitors. 1971 - We were on the receiving end at St. James’ Park as Malcolm MacDonald bagged a treble for Newcastle United who beat us 3-2, the first of his seven goals past us, with Emlyn Hughes and future Magpie Kevin Keegan striking our goals. New reds 1987 - Mike Marsh signed on at Anfield, joining on a free transfer from Kirkby Town. He netted six times in 101 first-team games for the reds, before moving to West Ham United in September 1993 as part of the deal that brought Julian Dicks to Anfield. He is now a First Team Coach back at Anfield. 1941 – Centre-forward Arthur Shepherd signed for the reds. He was on the Anfield books at the same time as his brothers Joseph and full-back Bill. He struck twelve times in eleven wartime games, but never appeared for the reds in peacetime. 1874 – Forward Joe Lumsden was born in Tanfield. He signed from Burton Wanderers in June 1897, scoring twice in just eight senior outings before moving on to Glossop North End in May 1898. Seeing red for City 2004 - Richard Dunne was sent off for Manchester City as they lost 2-1 at Anfield in our first home game under Rafael Benítez, with our goals coming from Milan Baroš and Steven Gerrard. This was the first time in over five years that we had triumphed in a League game after trailing at half-time, to a Nicolas Anelka strike, one of his five goals past us. The wrong kind of treble 2000 - Dietmar Hamann, Gary McAllister and Arsenal’s Patrick Vieira were all sent off as we lost 2-0 at Highbury. Hamann’s red card was later rescinded. Thierry Henry netted the first of his nine goals past us, after Lauren had opened the scoring. Macca off the mark 1991 - Steve McManaman scored his first official reds goal as we lost 2-1 at Manchester City, with Dean Saunders missing a penalty. Mark Wright was injured in this game, and subsequently missed the next 21 games. David White bagged a brace for City, the first two of his five strikes past us, a feat he repeated in the reverse fixture later that season. A striking debut 1976 - New £200,000 record signing David Johnson made his reds bow as we beat Norwich City 1-0 at Anfield, thanks to a Steve Heighway goal. Bob Paisley was presented with the Manager of the Year award from the previous season before the match. Into the Champions League 2001 - We thumped Haka 4-1 at Anfield to progress to the group stages of the new Champions League for the first time, 9-1 on aggregate. Robbie Fowler scored on his return to the first team after his spat with Phil Thompson, while French midfielder Bernard Diomède played his fifth and final reds game. Our other goals came from Jamie Redknapp, Emile Heskey and an own goal from ex-Manchester United player Mark Wilson. Cyril’s century 1951 – Forward Cyril Done reached a century of reds senior games in our goalless top-flight draw with Burnley at Turf Moor. 2021 – We beat Burnley 2-0 at Anfield, in front of a sell-out crowd for the first time since March 2020, due to previous COVID restrictions. Diogo Jota headed us in front, before both sies had goals ruled out for offside. Sadio Mané secured the victory after the break. On the same day, midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain became a father for the first time, a son. Meanwhile, ex-reds reserves centre-half Conor Masterson joined Cambridge United on loan from Queens Park Rangers, scoring once in 21 outings for the U’s. Kicking off 1948 - We started the season with a defeat, losing 2-1 at Aston Villa in a season when we finished twelfth in the table. Jack Balmer nabbed our consolation with Trevor Ford netting two of his seven goals against us, while Cyril Sidlow saved a Dickie Dorsett spot-kick as right-back Bill Shepherd made his reds bow. Quadruple debutants 2002 - Alou Diarra, Anthony Le Tallec, Florent Sinama-Pongolle and Grégory Vignal all made their debuts for the French Under-21’s. The French beat Iceland 2-1 in a friendly held at the Stade André Pestourie in Brive-la-Gaillarde. Future red Alex Manninger won his 1st cap for Austria as a R.C.D. Espanyol player as they lost 3-2 to Stéphane Henchoz’s Switzerland in a friendly in Basel. 2007 – Future red Joe Allen scored on his debut for Wales Under-21’s as they won a friendly 4-3 in Sweden. On the same day, future reds loanee Victor Moses nabbed a brace as England Under-17’s thumped New Zealand 5-0 in a World Championship Finals group game in South Korea, with future red James Milner playing for England Under-21’s. Three for the boss 1943 - Future reds boss Don Welsh bagged a treble as we beat Everton 5-2 in a wartime friendly at Goodison Park. Billy Liddell and Jack Balmer added our others. Robbie again 2002 - Robbie Keane netted in his fourth consecutive international, winning his final cap as a Leeds United player as the Republic of Ireland won a friendly in Finland 3-0. Sami Hyypiä, Jari Litmanen and ex-red Jason McAteer all also featured, with the latter captaining the side as he won his fiftieth cap, although some counts place this as his 49th due to a disputed game against a Mexico XI in 2000. Bruno l’international 2002 - Bruno Cheyrou made his senior international debut for France, as a late substitute for Lilian Thuram in their 1-1 draw with Tunisia in Rades. Future red Djibril Cissé also featured. On the same day, Øyvind Leonhardsen won his final cap as a Tottenham Hotspur player, and 79th in total, as Norway lost 1-0 to the Netherlands in a friendly in Oslo. John Arne Riise and future red Bolo Zenden also played. Christian Poulsen won his first cap while with Schalke 04 as Denmark beat Scotland 1-0 at Hampden Park. Also in international action were Milan Baroš, Vladimír Šmicer, and future reds Paul Jones, Sotirios Kyrgiakos, Fernando Morientes and Andriy Voronin. Red Olympians 2004 - Momo Sissoko played for Mali as they lost 1-0 to Italy in the Quarter-final at the Olympic Games in Athens. More happily, future red Javier Mascherano featured in Argentina’s 4-0 thumping of Costa Rica in Patras at the same stage of the tournament. Diouf on target 2007 - Ex-red El-Hadji Diouf struck as Senegal drew 1-1 in a friendly with Ghana at The New Den in south London. Ex-reds Djibril Cissé and Alou Diarra both featured for France in a B international defeat in Slovakia, with Nikolay Mihaylov featuring for Bulgaria Under-21’s. Strikers on the move 2019 – Daniel Sturridge signed for Trabzonspor after netting an impressive 67 times in 160 reds games since arriving from Chelsea for £12m in January 2013. He was released the following March after scoring seven times in sixteen outings. 2008 – Djibril Cissé joined Sunderland on loan from Olympique de Marseille. He bagged eleven goals in 38 games for the Mackems that season. 2001 - King Kenny’s son Paul Dalglish re-joined Wigan Athletic on loan from Norwich City. He stayed for the whole season, scoring twice in thirty appearances. 1914 – Forward Jack Parkinson moved on to Bury after 128 goals in 219 reds games. Other reds games 1999 – We lost 1-0 at Middlesbrough with Brian Deane nabbing the last of his eight goals against the reds. 1995 – Tony Yeboah netted a wonder strike, the only goal of our visit to Leeds United. 1985 – We were held to a 2-2 draw at Aston Villa. Gary Shaw scored for the Villains with Ian Rush equalising before the break. Future red Mark Walters netted before Jan Mølby’s late leveller. However, there was still time for Nigel Spink to save a Rush spot-kick. 1965 – We won 3-1 at Leicester City with Geoff Strong adding to a Roger Hunt brace. For Shanks 1974 – An informal dinner party in honour of the retired Bill Shankly was staged at St. George’s Hotel. The event was sponsored by the reds players and labelled ‘Thank You Boss’. The menu included Cured Kop Cod and Clear Mersey Soup, with one of the accompanying wines being from “a Shankley [sic] vintage year” of 1972, curiously a year in which he failed to lead us to silverware. Also in international action 1990 – Future red Øyvind Leonhardsen played for Norway Under-21’s as they beat Sweden 2-0 in a friendly in Tromsø. 1999 – Future red Igor Bišcan featured for Croatia in their 2-1 defeat of Malta in a European Championships qualifier in Zagreb.
