Crossing the Pennines 2017 – Left-back Andy Robertson signed from Hull City for an initial £8m, scoring eleven goals in 297 outings across his first seven seasons as he has so far helped us to claim the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, two League Cups and FA Community Shield. On the same day, midfielder Kevin Stewart made the reverse journey for a reported £6m, having made twenty senior appearances for the reds since arriving in July 2014 after his contract with Tottenham Hotspur expired. Happy birthday Mike 1969 - Mike Marsh was born in Kirkby. He bagged six goals in 101 reds games before being part of the deal that brought Julian Dicks to Anfield from West Ham United in September 1993. He left Melwood in June 2015, having risen to First Team Coach after progressing rapidly through the Academy coaching ranks. Welcome Vedgy 1998 - Vegard Heggem arrived from Rosenborg BK for £3.5m, the only signing made by the joint management team of Roy Evans and Gérard Houllier. His five years at Anfield were ravaged by hamstring injuries, and he could only make 65 appearances, scoring three times. 2010 – Joe Cole signed on a free transfer from Chelsea. He notched just five times in 42 reds outings, spending a season on loan at Lille OSC Métropole before returning to West Ham United for free in January 2013. First games in charge 2012 – Brendan Rodgers took charge of his first game in the appropriately-named Rogers Centre in Toronto. We drew 1-1 with Toronto with young centre-forward Adam Morgan scoring in his first senior outing while, Krisztián Adorján and Jordon Ibe both played their first reds games. 2004 - Rafael Benítez led the reds for the first time. Djibril Cissé, Carl Medjani, Darren Potter, David Raven and Stephen Warnock all made their first outings for the club as we beat Wrexham 2-1 at the Racecourse Ground. Anthony Le Tallec grabbed both our goals. Four for Darwin 2022 - Darwin Núñez scored his first reds goals, bagging four, with his first coming from the spot, as we thumped RasenBallsport Leipzig e.V. 5-0 in their Red Bull Arena in a pre-season friendly after Mohamed Salah had opened the scoring. Other birthdays 1979 - Andriy Voronin was born in Odessa. The Ukrainian forward arrived from Bayer 04 Leverkusen on a free transfer in July 2007 and bagged six goals in 28 outings in his first season, before being loaned out to Hertha BSC Berlin, whom he helped to a fourth-placed finish in the Bundesliga, netting eleven times in 26 games. He then returned to Anfield where he failed to score in another twelve games before being sold to Dinamo Moskva in January 2010 for £1.8m. 1961 – Former reserves midfielder Mick Halsall was born in Bootle. He left Anfield in 1983 after six years as a professional to forge a successful career with Birmingham City, Carlisle United and Peterborough United. He is now head of Academy coaching for West Bromwich Albion. Signing on 2010 - Young centre-back Danny Wilson signed from Rangers for an initial £2m fee. He made nine first-team reds appearances, as well as breaking into the senior Scotland side in his first season. However, he moved on to Heart Of Midlothian in May 2013 after a series of loan spells away from Anfield. 2021 – Ethiopian-born, German international midfielder Melkamu Frauendorf signed as a professional with the reds, making his senior bow from the bench in an FA Cup defeat of Shrewsbury Town in January 2022, making two first-team appearances before being released in June 2024. Lonergan’s lone outing 2019 – Keeper Andy Lonergan made his only first-team appearance, playing the first half of our 2-1 defeat by Sevilla in Boston, with the Spaniards having Joris Gnagnon dismissed for a horror tackle on Yasser Larouci. Nolito opened the scoring with Divock Origi equalising before the break. However, Alejandro Pozo struck a late winner. Roy’s stalemate start 2010 – Roy Hodgson took charge of the reds for the first time as we were held to a goalless draw at Grasshopper-Club Zürich. Forwards David Amoo and Lauri Dalla Valle, midfielders Tom Ince, Victor Pálsson and Jonjo Shelvey and centre-back Steven Irwin all made their first senior appearances for the club. Justice denied 2000 - Former South Yorkshire Police Superintendent Bernard Murray was cleared of manslaughter at Leeds Crown Court over his part in the Hillsborough disaster. The jury took longer to come to a conclusion on former Chief Superintendent David Duckenfield, although he was also eventually not convicted. Striking out 2007 - Robbie Fowler signed for Cardiff City, after twelve strikes in 39 games in his second reds spell. He netted six times in just sixteen outings in a season that was once again hampered by injury. 2014 – Iago Aspas joined Sevilla on loan after netting just once in fifteen reds games since arriving from Real Club Celta de Vigo for £7.7m in June 2013. He returned to his former club two years later for €5m. Reds farewells 2006 - Former keeper Bert Slater died in Brechin. He arrived from Falkirk in swap deal for Tommy Younger in June 1959 and played 111 times, winning a Second Division title medal in 1962, before returning to Scotland to join Dundee that July. 2021 – Scottish left-half Tommy Leishman died. He had won the Scottish Cup with St. Mirren, signing for £10,000 in November 1949. He helped us back to the First Division in 1962, although he then only made eleven top-flight appearances before returning north of the border, to Hibernian, in January 1963 after a total of seven goals in 118 reds games, including our first ever League Cup strike. Bowyer deal off 2002 - Liverpool pulled out of the controversial deal to bring Lee Bowyer to Anfield. A club spokesman said, “Liverpool Football Club have decided not to go ahead with the proposed transfer of Lee Bowyer for a variety of reasons. Manager Gérard Houllier was not convinced the player had either the hunger or desire to play for the club, qualities which are essential for any Liverpool player.” Reds in action 2007 - A Liverpool XI played in a testimonial match for Peterborough United’s long-serving keeper Mark Tyler at London Road. Martin Hansen saved a penalty as the game ended goalless. Dioufy on target 2001 - El-Hadji Diouf netted in Senegal’s 5-0 thumping of Namibia in a World Cup qualifier in Windhoek. Fellow future red Salif Diao also played. Youngsters on the mark 2010 – Dani Pacheco nabbed a brace as Spain Under-19’s beat Portugal 2-1 in a European Championship Finals group fixture in France, with future red Thiago Alcântara also in action. Meanwhile, Chris Mavinga played as France thumped Austria 5-0 and future reds Steven Caulker and Nathaniel Clyne both featured in England’s 1-0 defeat by the Netherlands in the same competition, with future red Fabio Borini playing for Italy in their goalless draw with Croatia. 2000 - Future red Milan Baroš was on the scoresheet as the Czech Republic Under-18’s beat their Finnish counterparts 3-2 in a European Championship Finals group game in Germany. His future clubmate Daniel Sjölund was on the losing side. 2002 - Fernando Torres featured as Spain Under-19’s drew 1-1 with the Czech Republic in a group encounter in Norway. Babb steps up 1992 - Phil Babb joined Coventry City from Bradford City for £500,000. He had played as a midfielder at Valley Parade, scoring fourteen times in 93 appearances. He looked an accomplished centre-back at Highfield Road, grabbing four goals in 84 appearances before arriving at Anfield. Knocked out 2007 - Harry Kewell came off the bench as Australia were held to a 1-1 draw by Japan in the Quarter-final of the AFC Asian Cup in Vietnam. Extra time brought no further goals, with Japan eventually winning 4-3 on penalties. Meanwhile, future red Mikel San José featured as Spain Under-19’s were held to a goalless draw by Greece in a European Championship Finals group game in Austria. 2016 – Sheyi Ojo, Jordan Rossiter and future red Dominic Solanke all played for England Under-19’s as they lost 2-1 to Italy in their European Championships Semi-final in Germany. These were Ojo and Rossiter’s final caps at this level, while Rossiter was captaining the side. Ex-reds on the move 1988 - Former reserves forward Paul Jewell joined Bradford City from Wigan Athletic for £80,000. He netted 66 times in 311 games for the Bantams, his final League club. 1997 - Former reserves striker Mike Newell signed for Aberdeen from Birmingham City for a fee of £160,000. He had two seasons at Pittodrie, bagging fourteen goals in 54 games, before joining Crewe Alexandra on a free transfer. 2009 – Winger Richie Partridge signed for MK Dons on a free transfer from Chester City. He had nabbed seven goals in 68 outings for the Blues. 2016 – Left-back Paul Konchesky signed for Gillingham from Leicester City on a free transfer after five goals in 155 games for the Foxes. 2017 – Right-back Javier Manquillo joined Newcastle United from Club Atlético de Madrid, after seventeen senior games for the Spanish side. 2023 – Ex-reds defender Ki-Jana Hoever re-joined Stoke City on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers, scoring four times in 44 outings in this second spell with the Potters. Also in international action 1991 – Future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel played as Brazil beat host nation Chile 2-0 in the Copa América. 2003 – Future red Daniel Agger played as Denmark Under-20’s lost 2-0 to Brazil in an NI Milk Cup game in Northern Ireland. 2004 – Ex-red Arnaud Bühler featured for Switzerland Under-19’s as they lost 3-2 to Turkey in their European Championships Semi-final in Fribourg. 2009 – Future red Thiago Alcântara represented Spain Under-19’s in their 2-1 defeat of Turkey in a European Championship Finals group game in the Ukraine.

Final joy and despair 2010 - Fernando Torres and ex-red Xabi Alonso helped Spain to a 1-0 defeat of the Netherlands in the World Cup Final in Johannesburg, with Dirk Kuyt appearing and future reds coach John Heitinga sent off for the losing side. 2021 – England drew 1-1 with Italy in the European Championships Final at Wembley but lost out on penalties. Jordan Henderson came on as a substitute and was later himself replaced, with ex-red Raheem Sterling and future red Federico Chiesa also in action. Departures 2008 – Peter Crouch was sold to Portsmouth for a fee of up to £11m, after 42 goals in 134 outings since his £7m capture from Southampton in July 2005. He netted sixteen times in 49 games in his second spell with Pompey before moving back to Tottenham Hotspur for around £9m a year later. 1933 – Full-back Tommy Lucas left the reds for Clapton Orient. He had signed from Alexandra Victoria in 1916 and played 366 reds games, netting three times, winning one League title and captaining England in his time at Anfield. 2016 – Right-back Fred Perry died. He signed from Worthing in July 1954, but made just one senior appearance before joining Sittingbourne in January 1957. Winning run comes to an end 2020 – We were held to a 1-1 draw by Burnley behind closed doors at Anfield, ending a record run of 24 consecutive home League victories. Andy Robertson put the reds in front before the break, but Jay Rodriguez equalised in the second half, the latest of his four goals past us to date. More red arrivals 2008 – Brazilian keeper Diego Cavalieri signed from Palmeiras for £3.5m. He only made ten senior appearances, keeping four clean sheets, but sat on the bench on a further 103 occasions. He moved to Cesena for £1.2m in August 2010. 1934 – Keeper Stanley Kane signed on at Anfield. He only played six first-team games before leaving for Southend United in April 1936. Also at the World Cup 1966 - Roger Hunt played in England’s goalless draw with Uruguay at Wembley, the opening game of their victorious World Cup campaign. 2018 – Dejan Lovren reached the World Cup Final as Croatia beat England 2-1 after extra time in their Semi-final in Moscow, with Jordan Henderson and ex-red Raheem Sterling on the losing side. On the same day, ex-red Bernard Diomède took charge of France Under-19’s as they beat China 5-3 in a friendly. Off the mark 2019 - Rhian Brewster scored his first two senior goals as we thumped Tranmere Rovers 6-0 at Prenton Park in our opening pre-season friendly, with Bobby Duncan netting while playing for the senior side for the first time. Nathaniel Clyne, Curtis Jones and Divock Origi also scored as forward Paul Glatzel, keeper Vítězslav Jaroš and left-backs Yasser Larouci and Adam Lewis featured for the first-team for the first time. Also debuting at this level was keeper Daniel Atherton, who actually came on as a forward! New club channel 2007 - The launch of the club’s own TV channel, LFC TV was announced. This was the result of a three-year deal with Setanta. Rick Parry said, “The channel heralds a new era for Liverpool Football Club. We always welcome the opportunity to engage with our fantastic fan-base and LFC TV will bring them closer to the club and the team they love, at what is a very exciting time both on and off the pitch.” Kevin and out 2015 – Midfielder Kevin Stewart signed a new contract with the club, joining Swindon Town on loan on the same day. Luis at the treble 2012 – Luis Suárez scored a hat-trick as the Uruguay Olympic XI beat a Chile Under-25’s side 6-4 in Maldonado, with clubmate Sebastian Coates also in action. 1993 – Future red Titi Camara netted for Guinea as they drew an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier 2-2 in Burundi. Heading off 2006 - Dietmar Hamann officially joined Bolton Wanderers for £500,000. However, he moved on to Manchester City before the ink was dry on his contract. Meanwhile, Chris Kirkland joined Wigan Athletic on loan. He signed permanently in October 2006, playing 134 times for the Latics in total, again suffering from injuries before moving to Sheffield Wednesday in May 2012. Also that day, ex-reds winger Mark Kennedy joined Crystal Palace on a free transfer from Wolverhampton Wanderers. He turned out 48 times for the Eagles, grabbing just one goal before being released in May 2008. 2022 – Welsh right-back Neco Williams was sold to Nottingham Forest for a reported £17m, having played 33 reds games, helping us to claim the Premier League title. Ex-reds on the move 1991 - John Aldridge joined Tranmere Rovers from Real Sociedad for £250,000. He scored 174 times for them in 295 appearances and was also their Manager for five years. 1996 - Nigel Spackman joined First Division Sheffield United as a player, and as Assistant Manager to Howard Kendall. He played 27 times in his two seasons at Bramall Lane, taking over as the boss the following June. 2019 – Midfielder Danny Guthrie joined Walsall from Indonesian side Persatuan Sepakbola Mitra Kukar on a free transfer, netting once in 28 outings in his first campaign with the Saddlers. 2014 – Forward Dani Pacheco joined Real Betis Balompié from AD Alcorcón, playing 25 times as they were promoted back to La Liga, moving on to Getafe in July 2016. On the same day, defender Gareth Roberts signed for Chester, playing 47 times before being released at the end of the season. 2000 - Steve Harkness left Sheffield Wednesday, joining Conference side Chester City on a free transfer, under the management of his former Anfield team-mate Mark Wright. He only made ten appearances before retiring from the game later that year. 1999 - David James left Aston Villa for West Ham United in a £3.5m deal, after just under two years at Villa Park. He played 102 times for the Hammers before moving on again to Manchester City in January 2004. Triple youth captures 2007 - Forward Michael Collins and keeper Martin Hansen both signed on as professionals. Meanwhile, striker David Amoo joined the reserves set-up from Millwall. Also, Angel Vales joined the club as reserve team coach and head of technical analysis. Welsh makes his debut 2000 - John Welsh made his debut for England Under-16’s as they beat Thailand 3-0 at York City’s Bootham Crescent in the opening fixture of a Nationwide-sponsored tournament that also featured Brazil. New deals 2009 – Nabil El Zhar signed a new contract until 2012. The French-born Moroccan international struck once in 32 reds games, moving on to Spanish side Levante U.D. in August 2011. 2002 - John Arne Riise signed an extension to his Liverpool contract to keep him at Anfield until 2007. He signed from AS Monaco for £4m in June 2001 and netted 31 times in his 348 first-team appearances, at either left-back or on the left side of midfield, but left for Roma for the same fee he was signed for in June 2008. He helped us to claim the Champions League, FA Cup, two UEFA Super Cups, League Cup and two FA Charity Shields. Bolo at last 1998 - Bolo Zenden grabbed his first international goal, while winning his last cap as a PSV Eindhoven player, and tenth in total. The Netherlands lost 2-1 to Croatia in the World Cup Finals Third-place play-off in Paris. Future reds on the move 1985 - John Scales joined Bristol Rovers from his first club Leeds United on a free transfer. He notched twice in 85 games for the Pirates, before moving on to Wimbledon in July 1987. 2004 - Roy Hodgson was appointed Manager of Viking F.K. Stavanger. He led them to ninth and fifth place finishes before taking charge of Finland in January 2006. 2011 - Lazar Marković signed a five-year deal as a professional for Partizan, going on to net fourteen times in 65 games, helping them to claim two League titles before joining SL Benfica for £20m three years later. On the same day, future reds scout Jonathan Woodgate joined Stoke City, playing 21 times without scoring in his one season with the Potters. 2015 – Dutch midfielder Gini Wijnaldum joined Newcastle United from PSV Eindhoven for a reported £14.5m. He netted eleven times in forty games for the Geordies as they were relegated, moving on to Anfield for an initial £23m in July 2016. Other red internationals 2007 - Javier Mascherano featured as Argentina beat Mexico 3-0 in their Copa América Semi-final in Venezuela. On the same day, future red Luis Suárez netted as Uruguay Under-20’s lost their World Championship Finals Round of Sixteen game 2-1 to the USA in Canada, after extra time. Ex-red Antonio Barragán was on the winning side as Spain beat Brazil 4-2 after extra time at the same stage. 2011 – Mascherano played in a 3-0 victory over Costa Rica in a Copa América group game in Córdoba. 2016 – Midfielder Joe Allen was named in UEFA’s team of the tournament for Euro 2016 after Wales’s run to the Semi-final. 2004 - Future red Martin Škrtel played for Slovakia as they lost 2-0 to Serbia & Montenegro in the Kirin Challenge Cup in Japan. 1995 - Future red Brad Friedel played as the USA lost 1-0 to Bolivia in a Copa América group game in Uruguay. 1991 – Future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel appeared for Brazil in their 1-1 draw with Uruguay in a Copa América group game in Chile. 1925 - Forward Jimmy Walsh featured in England’s 8-2 thrashing of Australia in an FA Tour game in Maitland. Happy days 1931 - Centre-half Fred Tomley was born in Liverpool. He signed from Litherland in September 1953 but only made two senior appearances before joining Chester in July 1955. 2009 – Xabi Alonso married Nagore Aranburu in San Sebastián. 2013 – Ex-reserves midfielder Tom Ince, Paul’s son, became a father for the first time when his partner, Charly Cottrell, gave birth to Halle Rae at Stepping Hill Hospital in Stockport, where Ince himself had been born 21 years earlier.

Midfield arrivals 2011 – Charlie Adam signed from Blackpool for an initial £6.75m. He notched twice in 35 outings, helping us to claim the Carling Cup before being sold to Stoke City for a reported £4m thirteen months later. 1984 – Midfielder Alberto Aquilani was born in Rome. He signed from Roma for a basic fee of €20m in August 2009, but injury restricted him to just 28 senior appearances, in which he notched only twice, although he did manage to register six assists in the League, only one less than Steven Gerrard. He was sold to Fiorentina in August 2012 after two seasons on loan back in his native land, with Juventus and AC Milan. Champions 2019 – Alisson Becker, Roberto Firmino, future red Arthur Melo and ex-red Philippe Coutinho all featured as Brazil beat Peru 3-1 in the Copa América Final in Rio de Janeiro to become South American champions for the ninth time. Mixed semi-final fortunes 2021 – Jordan Henderson and ex-red Raheem Sterling played as England beat Denmark 2-1 at Wembley to reach the European Championships Final after extra time, although they went on to lose the showpiece to Italy on penalties. 2010 – Fernando Torres and ex-red Xabi Alonso both featured as Spain beat Germany 1-0 in Durban to reach the World Cup Final. 1998 - Future red Bolo Zenden played as the Netherlands lost 4-2 on penalties to Brazil in the World Cup Semi-final in Marseille after the match had ended 1-1, with future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel saving two spot-kicks in the shoot-out. 2011 – Future reds Emre Can and Samed Yeşil both netted as Germany Under-17’s lost 3-2 to host nation Mexico in the World Championships Semi-final. On the same day, future red Mohamed Salah scored as Egypt Under-20’s drew a friendly 2-2 in Portugal. 2016 – Can played for the senior side as Germany lost 2-0 to France in the European Championships Semi-final in Marseille. Ince out 1999 - It was announced that Paul Ince would be leaving the club. Gérard Houllier said, “I have told him he is not in my plans for Liverpool. He should look elsewhere now.” He joined Middlesbrough for £1m three weeks later. He had struck seventeen times in 81 reds games during his two years at Anfield. Ending up fourth 1990 - Peter Beardsley, Steve McMahon and future red Mark Wright all played as England lost 2-1 to Italy in the World Cup third place play-off in Bari. Debuts galore 2018 – Rafa Camacho, Fabinho, Curtis Jones, Naby Keïta and Nat Phillips all made their reds bows as we thumped Chester 7-0 at their Swansway Chester Stadium in our opening pre-season friendly. Winger Harry Wilson bagged his first two goals for the club as we led 2-0 at half time. James Milner converted a penalty before Daniel Sturridge bagged a brace, with Ryan Kent netting his first for the reds and Danny Ings also on target. 1988 – Future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel debuted for Brazil as they beat the host nation 1-0 in a group game in the Australia Bicentenary Gold Cup in Melbourne. 1989 – Taffarel featured in Brazil’s goalless draw with Colombia in a Copa América group game in Salvador. Besian’s treble 2007 - Besian Idrizaj scored a hat-trick, his first reds goals, as we took a three-goal half-time lead in our opening pre-season friendly at Wrexham before eventually winning 3-2. Jordy Brouwer, Stephen Darby, Ryan Flynn, Martin Hansen, Ronald Huth, Krisztián Németh, András Simon and Jay Spearing all played their first reds games that day. In and out 2008 – Sarajevo-born forward Nikola Sarić signed for the reds from Herfølge Boldklub in Denmark. He had recently been named as Under-17’s Player of the Year by the Danish Football Association. He failed to break through to the first team and moved on to HNK Hajduk Split in June 2011. 2015 – Spanish right-back Javier Manquillo had his loan from Club Atlético de Madrid terminated. He had made nineteen senior appearances. Emile on the move again 2006 - Emile Heskey joined Wigan Athletic from Birmingham City for £5.5m. He struck sixteen times in 88 games for the Latics before moving to Aston Villa for £3.5m in January 2009. Ray on the way up 1982 - Ray Houghton signed for Fulham from West Ham United on a free transfer, five years prior to his arrival at Anfield. He netted 21 times in 145 appearances for the Cottagers, before moving on to Oxford United. Also on the move 2000 - Young midfielder Layton Maxwell joined Stockport County on loan. He scored twice in 23 appearances for them before joining Cardiff City on a free transfer a year later. His only reds appearance had come in a Worthington Cup tie against Hull City in September 1999, when he scored in front of the Kop. 2004 - Dominic Matteo joined Blackburn Rovers from Leeds United on a free transfer. Meanwhile, Nick Barmby also moved for free, joining Hull City from Leeds United. Matteo played just 39 times for Rovers before joining Stoke City in January 2007, while Barmby turned out on 197 occasions for his hometown club, netting 32 times, as well as taking over as Manager for five months. 1993 – Future reds first-team coach Kevin Keen joined Wolverhampton Wanderers from West Ham United for £600,000, having bagged thirty goals in 279 outings for the Hammers. 2008 – Ex-reserves forward Steven Gillespie joined Colchester United from Cheltenham Town for £400,000. He bagged 28 goals in 108 outings, stepping down a division to join Fleetwood Town in June 2012. 2011 - Robbie Fowler signed for SCG Muangthong United in Thailand, netting four times in twenty games while in Thailand, also taking over as coach for a while. Stephen Darby left Anfield on loan for Rochdale on the same day, playing forty times as they were relegated from League One. 2013 - Abel Xavier was appointed Manager of Sporting Clube Olhanense but was sacked just three months later. 2014 - Luis García signed for Indian Super League side Atlético de Kolkata, going on to win the Manyavar Most Exciting Player award as they claimed the title.
