David Fairclough was also on target, with all the goals coming in the second half. For Jamie 2010 – Jamie Carragher’s testimonial took place at Anfield in front of more than 35,000, with the reds beating an Everton side 4-1. Luis García opened the scoring with Carra converting a spot-kick for the reds shortly before half time. Joe Cole made the score 3-0 with his first reds strike but Jamie then scored from the spot for Everton! Nathan Eccleston also opened his account for the reds. Babb strikes 1996 - Phil Babb notched his only reds strike, the only goal of the game against his former club Coventry City at Highfield Road, in what was Roy Evans’ hundredth League game in charge. 1976 - We also faced the Sky Blues, winning 3-1 at Anfield thanks to goals from Kevin Keegan, David Johnson and John Toshack. Mick Ferguson had shocked the home side by scoring in the first minute. Happy birthdays 1891 - Forward Fred Pagnam was born in Poulton-le-Fylde, Lancashire. He signed from Blackpool in May 1914, and so could only bag thirty goals in 39 reds games before joining Arsenal in October 1919, with whom he kept up his remarkable strike-rate. 1930 – Right-half Roy Saunders was born in Salford. He signed from Hull City in May 1948 and netted once in 146 reds appearances before joining Swansea Town in March 1959 in part-exchange for forward Des Palmer, who never featured for our first team. He was the father of 1990’s reds striker Dean and died in January 2009. 1980 – Michael Beale was born in Bromley, London. He joined the Academy as an Under-15’s coach in 2003, eventually progressing to be in charge of the Under-21’s. He left for São Paulo in January 2017, returning to the reds later that year for a brief spell before joining Steven Gerrard at Rangers. 1988 - Midfielder Ryan Flynn was born in Falkirk. He was awarded with a full-time contract at Melwood in the summer of 2006 having impressed in the previous season’s victorious FA Youth Cup campaign, including notching a goal in the Final. He made a loan move to his hometown club permanent in September 2009. The Bridge opens 1905 - The reds helped Chelsea to open Stamford Bridge, taking part in the first ever game played there. Unfortunately, we started as we meant to continue at the Bridge, losing 4-0 in a friendly encounter. 1909 - We visited there again, with outside-left John McDonald and inside-right Jimmy Stewart making their reds bows as we lost 2-1 in a season opener, with Joe Hewitt nabbing our consolation. An unhappy millennium 1971 - We lost 2-0 in a League game at Tottenham Hotspur in what was our 3,000th first-class fixture, with Martin Chivers nabbing one of his seven goals past us and Martin Peters scoring one of his fourteen. Starting off with a stalemate 1897 - We kicked off our season with a 2-2 draw against Stoke, with inside-forward Willie Walker scoring on his reds bow and Frank Becton also on the scoresheet. Forward Dan Cunliffe and right-winger Bobby Marshall also debuted as Billy Maxwell bagged the first of six goals against the reds, with Tom Hill also on target. 1933 - We also left the Victoria Ground with a share of the spoils, with Harold Taylor netting as we drew 1-1 with Stoke City, as they were known by then. Forward Jack ‘Nipper’ Roberts made his only senior reds outing in this game, while Harry Davies nabbed his fourth and final goal past us. Disappointment against the Trotters and Terriers 1911 - We lost 2-1 at Bolton Wanderers in a top-flight meeting, with Jack Parkinson grabbing our consolation and John Bovill and half-back Harry Lowe both debuting. A League Cup first 1968 - We won at home in the League Cup for the first time, at the fourth attempt, as Roger Hunt, Chris Lawler, Ian Callaghan and Peter Thompson all netted in our 4-0 defeat of Sheffield United. International reds 1999 - Several reds turned out for their countries in Euro 2000 qualifiers. Michael Owen struck in England’s 6-0 demolition of Luxembourg, his first senior England goal at Wembley, with Steve McManaman on the scoresheet twice, his first goals for his country, in his first game as a Real Madrid player. Robbie Fowler also played, under the management of ex-red Kevin Keegan. Sami Hyypiä skippered Finland for the first time as they lost 2-1 to Germany in Helsinki, with Christian Ziege winning his first cap as a Middlesbrough player, and fellow future red Markus Babbel also playing. Nicolas Anelka won his first cap as a Real Madrid player in France’s goalless draw in the Ukraine. Ex-red Øyvind Leonhardsen was on target in Norway’s 1-0 defeat of Greece in Oslo, with Vegard Heggem also in the side. Another ex-red, Don Hutchison, netted as Scotland won 2-1 in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Dean Saunders won his seventieth cap, and first while with Bradford City, grabbing his final goal for Wales in their 2-1 win in Belarus. Future reds loanee keeper Paul Jones also featured. Future reds Sporting Director Richard Hughes won his second and last cap for Scotland Under-21’s. as they won a European Championships qualifier 3-2 in Bosnia-Herzegovina, with future reds recruiter Mark Burchill scoring all three Scottish goals. Also in action that day were Patrik Berger, Steve Staunton and future reds Alex Manninger, Fernando Morientes and Bolo Zenden. 2010 - Péter Gulácsi saved a penalty for Hungary Under-21’s in their 1-0 home defeat to Wales. Future reds Mario Balotelli, Simon Mignolet and Daniel Sturridge also featured at the same level that day. Laurie at the wrong end 1946 - Centre-back Laurie Hughes scored an own goal as we lost 1-0 at home to Middlesbrough in our first home game of the first post-war season, with right-half Phil Taylor reaching a century of reds games. Management moves 2008 - Kevin Keegan resigned as Manager of Newcastle United for the second time, stating that “a manager must have the right to manage and that clubs should not impose upon any manager any player that he does not want.” 2015 - Abel Xavier was sacked as Manager of Clube Desportivo das Aves after just two months in charge. On the move again 2003 - Future red Peter Crouch joined Norwich City on loan from Aston Villa. He struck four times in fifteen games for the Canaries as they headed towards the First Division title. Meanwhile, James Milner joined Swindon Town on loan from Leeds United, netting twice in six games for the Robins. 2012 – Michael Owen signed for Stoke City, having been released by Manchester United. He could only net once in just nine senior outings before retiring at the end of the season. 2020 – SL Benfica paid a club record €24m to Unión Deportiva Almería for Uruguayan forward Darwin Núñez. Death of a guest 1952 - Frank O’Donnell died, aged just 41. He struck once in two wartime appearances for the reds. He gained six Scotland caps as well as scoring for Preston North End in every round of the FA Cup in 1937, including the Final. Also in international action 1974 – John Toshack played for Wales in their 2-1 defeat by Austria in a European Championships qualifier in Vienna. 1985 – Future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel played for Brazil Under-20’s as they beat Nigeria 2-0 in their World Cup Semi-final in Leningrad. 1996 – Future reds Markus Babbel and Christian Ziege both appeared for Germany in their 2-0 friendly win in Poland. 2005 – Ex-red Rigobert Song faced future red Kolo Touré as Ivory Coast lost 3-2 to Cameroon in a World Cup qualifier in Abidjan.

Sadio the champion 2022 - Sadio Mané had a penalty saved as the Africa Cup of Nations Final ended goalless between Senegal and Mohamed Salah’s Egypt in Cameroon. Senegal won a penalty shoot-out 4-2, with Mané converting the winning kick. Dirk strikes again 2010 - Dirk Kuyt headed in his fiftieth reds goal from a corner, in his 181st game for the club, to secure a 1-0 derby victory at Anfield. Centre-half Sotirios Kyrgiakos was sent off for a two-footed challenge on Marouane Fellaini, despite taking the ball, with both Fellaini and Stephen Pienaar lucky to avoid red cards in the first half. Pienaar was eventually dismissed in stoppage time. Off the mark 2022 – Luis Díaz made his reds bow with Harvey Elliott striking his first reds goal as we beat Cardiff City 3-1 in our FA Cup Fourth Road encounter at Anfield, en route to winning the trophy for the eighth time. The game was goalless at half time, but Diogo Jota and Takumi Minamino netted before Elliott’s goal. American issues 2007 - Liverpool FC announced that the Board had agreed the terms of an offer from George Gillett Jr. and Tom Hicks to buy the club. Many happy returns 1916 - Legendary forward Jack Balmer was born in West Derby, Liverpool. He failed to score in 128 reds games after signing from St. Johnstone in September 1931, before being sold to Birmingham City for £5,000 in March 1935. 1903 – Forward James Clark was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He signed from his hometown club for £3,000 in January 1928 and bagged eleven goals in 42 games, before moving joining Nottingham Forest in July 1931. On the same day, forward Bob Clark also came into the world. He signed from Newcastle United for £3,000 in January 1928, having helped them to the League title the year before. He struck eleven times in 42 outings before joining Nottingham Forest in July 1931. 1978 - Ex-reserves defender Gareth Roberts was born in Wrexham. He left Anfield in August 1999 for Panionios in Greece. Yet another shut out 1988 - We secured a club record tenth consecutive clean sheet as we were held to a draw at home by West Ham United. Manager Kenny Dalglish was presented with his third Bell’s Manager of the Month award prior to kick-off. 2012 – We were held to a goalless draw by Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield as Luis Suárez returned from a nine-match ban. Getting thumped We have lost four of our fourteen matches on this day in history. 1937 - The most recent of these was a 5-0 thumping at Birmingham City in the top flight. Red trebles 1963 - Ian St. John netted a hat-trick as we beat Drumcondra 5-1 in a friendly at Tolka Park in Dublin. Thumpings 1982 - Terry McDermott, Ian Rush, Kenny Dalglish and Ronnie Whelan all netted as we beat Ipswich Town 4-0 at Anfield as we moved towards our thirteenth League title. 1897 – We suffered a 6-1 trouncing at the hands of Stoke in our First Division encounter at the Victoria Ground. George Allan netted our consolation in what was our biggest defeat so far. Joe Schofield and Jimmy Hill each netted twice, with Alan Maxwell and Jim Hingerty also on target. Sam Raybould bagged our consolation, with reds keeper Peter Platt saving a Bob Crompton spot-kick. Jack Dewhurst scored two of his five goals past us, with Lionel Watson also on the scoresheet. Award-winning reds 2006 - Rafael Benítez was awarded the Liverpool Echo’s Merseyside Sports Personality of the Year, while skipper Steven Gerrard was presented with the Bill Shankly Memorial Award at the same event. On the same day, Jimmy Ryan played for the Republic of Ireland Under-18’s as they beat Malta 1-0. Guy Demel struck for the Hammers. 1949 – Full-back Ray Lambert played his hundredth League game for the club as we were held to a goalless draw at Anfield by Wolverhampton Wanderers. Twice against the Sky Blues This has been a very busy day over the years, with a total of 26 matches played, fourteen of which we have won. However, our two most recent games on this day have both resulted in League defeats to Coventry City. 1997 - Robbie Fowler opened the scoring as we lost 2-1 at Anfield to effectively put us out of the title race. Noel Whelan equalised, with Dion Dublin bagging the injury time winner, the first of his seven strikes past us. 1996 - We lost 1-0 at Highfield Road, with Steve Harkness suffering a broken leg. City’s Whelan was again on target. Mixed fortunes against the Mancs 1968 - Ron Yeats and Roger Hunt netted as we won 2-1 at Old Trafford, with George Best scoring his seventh and last goal for the home side against us. 1931 – Forward Alan Scott bagged our consolation as we were thumped 4-1, his second and final reds goal. Ex-reds centre-forward netted the last two of his four goals against the reds, with Hugh McLenahan and Harry Rowley also on the scoresheet. Sailing in 1878 – Inside-forward John ‘Sailor’ Hunter was born in Johnstone, Renfrewshire. The Scottish international signed from Abercorn in 1899 and bagged twelve goals in 45 reds games before returning north of the border in a combined £300 deal with winger Tom Robertson in May 1902 to join Heart Of Midlothian. Hunter later became Motherwell’s longest ever serving Manager, taking charge of them for over a thousand games. 1904 – Forward Tom Scott was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He joined the reds from Darlington, despite Everton believing they had a deal in place to sign him. He struck four times in eighteen games before moving on to Bristol City in October 1928. 1894 – Keeper Harry McNaughton was born in Edinburgh. He signed from St. Bernard’s in July 1920 but only made one senior appearance, keeping a clean sheet in the Anfield derby in the October of that year. Cyril’s treble 1942 - Cyril Done bagged a hat-trick as we beat Burnley 4-1 in a Wartime League game at Anfield that also counted towards the War League Cup, with Phil Taylor also on the scoresheet. 1896 - We hosted the Clarets in a testimonial match for reds defender Joe McQue on an Easter Monday. Tom Bradshaw struck twice with Fred Geary also on target as we won 4-2, with Clarke netting in his first reds game. 1928 - Our third meeting with Burnley was a top-flight encounter at Turf Moor, when Jimmy Walsh and Tommy Reid scored as we drew 2-2. Ted off the mark 1932 – Forward Ted Hancock netted his first reds goal as we beat Chelsea 2-1 at Anfield, with Gordon Hodgson also on target. Most recently 2021 – We lost 3-1 to Real Madrid behind closed doors at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stéfano in the first leg of our UEFA Champions League Quarter-final. Vinícius Júnior struck the first two of his five goals past us to date with Marco Asensio also on target. Mohamed Salah bagged our goal. In comes Rab 1898 – Right-half Rab Howell signed from Sheffield United for £200. He went on to become the only true Romany to play for England, playing 67 reds games without scoring before joining Preston North End in June 1901. Ton up 1974 – Midfielder Peter Cormack played his hundredth reds game as we beat Queens Park Rangers 2-1 at Anfield, thanks to an Alec Lindsay penalty and an own goal from Terry Mancini. Cooper bows out 1940 - Right-back and former reds skipper Tommy Cooper played his final game for us in a Wartime League game at Anfield against his hometown team, Stoke City. He was killed on military duty just two months later. 1946 - We visited the Victoria Ground for another Wartime League match, with Cyril Done netting the only goal of the game. 1953 – South African half-back Hugh Gerhardi played his sixth and final reds game as we were thumped 4-0 in a top-flight match at Cardiff City. Wilf Grant and Ken Chisholm each netted the first two of their four goals against the reds. Chasing the Foxes twice We have twice beaten Leicester City 1-0 on this day over the years. 1976 - Kevin Keegan was on target at Anfield. 1985 - Ronnie Whelan netted at Filbert Street. International beginnings and end 1963 - Gerry Byrne and Jimmy Melia both won the first of their two England caps as they beat Ian St. John’s Scotland 2-1 in the British International Championships at Wembley. 1907 - Alex Raisbeck won his eighth and final cap as he skippered Scotland in their 1-1 draw in the same fixture at St. James’ Park. Sam Hardy kept goal for England that day. Three times against the Rams We have entertained Derby County three times on this day in history, winning twice and losing on the other occasion. 1907 - Joe Hewitt struck a brace as we won 2-0. 1935 - Berry Nieuwenhuys netted our consolation in a 3-1 defeat. Also in international action 1957 – Tommy Younger kept goal as Scotland beat England 2-1 in the British International Championships at Wembley. 1977 – Glenn Hysén featured as Sweden thumped Finland 4-0 in a European Championships qualifier at Solna. 1997 – Future red Rigobert Song played in Cameroon’s 1-0 defeat of Zimbabwe in a World Cup qualifier in Douala. 2006 – Shane O’Connor played for the Irish Under-16’s in their 1-1 friendly draw in Belgium. 2015 - Ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper took charge of England Under-16’s as they beat France 3-1 in the Final of the Montaigu Tournament. 2016 – Future red Ozan Kabak featured as Turkey Under-17’s beat their Irish counterparts 3-0 in Dublin. 2023 – Future red Trey Nyoni played for England Under-16’s as they beat Belgium 3-0 in a friendly in France.

New bosses 1959 - Bill Shankly was appointed reds boss, with the intention that he would take over in the New Year. However, he was in place just thirteen days later. He had led Huddersfield Town to 49 wins in 129 League games in charge, but could not get them out of the Second Division. The great man achieved his aim of turning the reds into a ‘bastion of invincibility’ as he led us out of the Second Division and then to three League titles, two FA Cups, the UEFA Cup and FA Charity Shield, before shocking the football world with his resignation in July 1974. 2010 - Tom Werner took over as Chairman of the club, following Martin Broughton’s departure. The New York-born businessman co-founded Fenway Sports Group and is also Chairman of the Boston Red Sox. King Billy’s treble 1951 - Billy Liddell scored a hat-trick, including a penalty, as we won 3-2 at Tottenham Hotspur. Sonny Walters bagged one of his four goals against the reds, with Les Bennett also on target. Great evening for the kids 2004 - We drew 1-1 at Tottenham Hotspur in the Fifth Round of the Carling Cup, with Florent Sinama-Pongolle converting a late penalty to equalise Jermain Defoe’s goal at the end of extra time, one of his six past us to date. The reds won the penalty shoot-out 4-3 as the away end rocked to the brand new ‘La Bamba’ song in honour of new boss Rafael Benítez. Stéphane Henchoz was making his 205th and final reds appearance, with winger Richie Partridge playing for the third and last time, while defender David Raven made his reds bow and forward Mark Smyth appeared for the only time. Jerzy’s nightmare 2002 - A Diego Forlán brace handed Manchester United a two-goal lead at Anfield, greatly assisted by Jerzy Dudek. A late Sami Hyypiä strike gave us hope, and Dietmar Hamann’s fierce drive hit the woodwork, but we lost 2-1. These were the first of Forlán’s four goals past us. Reds farewells 2012 - Phil Taylor died aged 95. He signed from his hometown club Bristol Rovers in March 1936 in exchange for outside-right Billy Hartill plus £5,000. He made 345 appearances at right-half before and after the war, scoring 34 times and winning one League title and captaining the side. He joined the coaching staff when he retired from playing in July 1954, and became Manager in May 1956, staying in the job for three years, but has the unhappy distinction of being the only reds boss never to manage the side in the top flight. 1962 - Left-winger Alan A'Court scored his 63rd and final reds goal as we beat Fulham 2-1 at Anfield in our first season back in the top flight. Roger Hunt also struck with Ronnie Moran missing a penalty. 1934 – Aston Villa went back to the Midlands on the wrong end of a 3-1 scoreline. Tom Waring opened the scoring with the last of his six goals past us, but Gordon Hodgson bagged a brace, with Tommy Johnson also on target as right-back Willie Steel played for the 128th and last time. 2022 – Steve Heighway retired from the Academy for the second time. He had been working for seven years, following his previous eighteen-year stint. Mølby off the mark 1984 - Jan Mølby bagged his first reds goal, although it was merely a consolation in our 3-1 defeat at Chelsea. Future red David Speedie and Joe McLaughlin netted, with Kerry Dixon scoring the first of his seven goals against the reds. Thumping the Blues 2021 – We beat Everton 4-1 at Goodison Park. Jordan Henderson bagged his 33rd and final goal for the club with Mohamed Salah also striking before Demarai Gray pulled a goal back before half time. Salah and Diogo Jota then netted in the second half to increase the pressure on Rafael Benítez. Mauled by Tigers 2013 – We lost 3-1 at Hull City, the first time we had lost to the Tigers in seventeen meetings. They opened the scoring when a Jake Livermore strike was deflected off Martin Škrtel, before Steven Gerrard equalised with a free kick. David Meyler put the home side ahead before Škrtel diverted a shot from Tom Huddlestone into his own net for an own goal. 2012 - Daniel Agger headed in the only goal of the game as we hosted Southampton in a Premiership fixture. 2008 – We were held to a goalless Premiership draw at Anfield by West Ham United as we went to the top of the table. A Kop mosaic in support of Michael Shields was held up prior to kick off. Diego born 1982 – Sub keeper Diego Cavalieri was born in São Paulo. He signed from Palmeiras in his native Brazil for £3.5m in July 2008, making just ten senior appearances, all in cup competitions, although he sat on the bench on a further 103 occasions. He moved on to Italian side Cesena for £1.2m in August 2010. A winning debut 1973 - Forward Alan Waddle made his League bow in our defeat of West Ham United at Anfield, with Peter Cormack bagging the only goal of the game. Chris Lawler missed this game through injury, having played in all of our previous 102 League games. Razor off 1981 - Ray Kennedy was sent off for two bookable offences in the first half of our goalless League Cup Fourth Round tie at Arsenal as Terry McDermott played his 300th reds game. Fortunately, we won the replay the following week, en route to retaining the trophy. Beating the Rams again and again We have beaten Derby County three times on this day in history without conceding a goal. 2001 - Michael Owen’s poached effort gave us a win at Pride Park, although the reds had to thank Jerzy Dudek for a string of top-class saves, including one from a late Fabrizio Ravanelli penalty, to keep us top of the League. 1906 - Joe Hewitt nabbed the only goal of the game at the Baseball Ground as forward Sam Raybould played his 200th reds game. 1928 - Gordon Hodgson, Jimmy McDougall and James Clark struck as we won 3-0 at Anfield. European wins 1965 - We beat Belgians Standard de Liège 3-1 at Anfield in our first game of a European Cup Winners’ Cup campaign that saw us reach the Final in only our second season in continental competition. Chris Lawler struck a brace that night, with Peter Thompson also netting in a very bad-tempered game. 2020 – Curtis Jones struck the only goal of Ajax’s visit to Anfield in a UEFA Champions League group game, played behind closed doors. This result ensured we qualified as group winners with a game still to play. Mixed fortunes against the Blades We have faced Sheffield United three times over the years, winning just once. 1956 - Our most recent meeting was at Anfield, when Johnny Wheeler, Billy Liddell, Jimmy Melia, Alan A’Court and Alan Arnell were all on target in a 5-1 Second Division victory. Jimmy Hagan’s consolation was one of his four strikes against the reds. 1923 - Harry Chambers grabbed our goal as we drew a top-flight meeting at Bramall Lane, with Fred Tunstall nabbing one of his eight goals past us. 1900 - Charlie Satterthwaite was on target in a 2-1 home defeat, also in the First Division. Big wins 1979 - We beat Middlesbrough 4-0 at Anfield, with the goals coming from Terry McDermott, Alan Hansen, David Johnson and Ray Kennedy. Ray Clemence was presented with a specially inscribed carriage clock before the game to honour his achievement of only conceding sixteen goals in the 42 games of the last League campaign. 1917 - We trounced Blackburn Rovers 6-1 at Ewood Park in a Wartime League fixture, with Thomas Bennett bagging a brace and Harry Lewis, Arthur Metcalf, Jack Waine and Donald McKinlay all netting. 1945 - We won another Wartime League match, beating Huddersfield Town 4-1 at Anfield thanks to a Billy Liddell brace and goals from Willie Fagan and Jack Balmer. International first and last 1971 – Future red Peter Cormack won his ninth and final cap for Scotland in their 2-1 friendly victory over the Netherlands in Amsterdam, with Celtic’s Kenny Dalglish also in action. 2017 - Fulham’s Fábio Carvalho scored his first goal for England Under-16’s as they lost 2-1 to Brazil in Florida. In and out 2004 - Former reserves midfielder Layton Maxwell signed for Mansfield Town. He only played one game for the Stags before moving to Rhyl the following year. 1997 - Icelandic forward Haukur Ingi Guðnason arrived at Anfield from Keflavík for £150,000. Unfortunately, he never broke into the reds first-team, returning to his old club three years later. 1993 - Jimmy Case joined Sittingbourne from Darlington on a free transfer. He only remained there a month before rejoining Brighton & Hove Albion. 1911 – American-born outside-left Hugh Lester joined the reds, becoming the first player born outside the British Isles to play for Liverpool, although he only made two senior appearances before moving on to Oldham Athletic in May 1913. On the move again 1997 - Bruce Grobbelaar was released from Sheffield Wednesday, having been with the Owls for just over two months, without making a senior appearance. 2012 – Ex-reds centre-half and first-team coach Mauricio Pellegrino was sacked as Manager of Valencia. 2014 - Abel Xavier became Manager of Portuguese Segunda Liga side Sporting Clube Farense, remaining in the role for six months. 2017 - Sammy Lee was appointed Assistant Manager of Everton, continuing his long association with Sam Allardyce who had just taken over as the Blues’ boss. He stayed in the role until the following May. Other reds games 1993 – Jan Mølby scored from the spot as Wimbledon held us to a 1-1 draw in a League Cup Fourth Round tie at Anfield. Robbie Earle equalised late on with one of his five goals against the reds as we went on to be knocked out on penalties after a replay. 1992 – We drew 1-1 with Crystal Palace in another League Cup Fourth Round match in L4 with Mike Marsh converting a penalty. David Burrows had to be carried off with a ligament injury that kept him out of action for four months. We lost the replay at Selhurst Park. 1934 – Aston Villa went back to the Midlands on the wrong end of a 3-1 scoreline.
