Wembley glory for the 96 1989 - We clinched the FA Cup for the fourth time, in an all-Merseyside final, five weeks after the Hillsborough disaster that claimed 96 lives. John Aldridge, who was playing his hundredth reds game, opened the scoring in the fourth minute with a strike that was named as the BBC’s Goal of the Season, the only time the same player has claimed the award in consecutive seasons. We led until Stuart McCall equalised towards the end of the second half. Ian Rush put us back in front in extra-time before McCall became the first substitute to score twice in an FA Cup Final to level the match again. McCall’s achievement was then matched by Rushie who won us the cup with his 23rd FA Cup goal. The departure of a legend 1996 - Ian Rush signed for Leeds United on a free transfer, after his 346 strikes in 660 games had helped shoot us to countless honours. However, he bagged just three goals in 43 games for Leeds. Last win of the season 1985 - We played our only other first-class game on this day, winning 3-0 at West Ham United, our last win of a season that saw us finish second in the First Division, thirteen points behind Everton, and then go on to lose the European Cup Final on a tragic day at the Stade du Heysel in Brussels. Paul Walsh netted a brace, with Jim Beglin bagging the other. Jan Mølby played at centre-back, but lost five teeth in a collision with the Hammers’ Dave Swindlehurst. Most recently 2023 – Ollie Watkins missed a first-half penalty before Jacob Ramsay gave Aston Villa the lead inside the first half hour. Roberto Firmino bagged a late leveller in our last Anfield game of the season, with Jürgen Klopp watching from the stands as he started a touchline ban. Afterwards, there was a guard of honour for the departing Firmino, James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keïta. Jimmy, Jimmy 1922 - Centre-forward Jimmy Walsh signed from Stockport County. He netted 27 times in 77 reds games, before moving on to Hull City in June 1928. 1925 - Right-back Jimmy ‘Parson’ Jackson signed from Aberdeen for £1,750. He struck twice in 224 games for the reds, appearing in every outfield position, and was renowned for his on-field arguments with notoriously foul-mouthed keeper Elisha Scott! He became reds skipper in 1928, and also wrote a regular column for the Liverpool Weekly Post before leaving the reds in 1933 to become ordained as a Presbyterian minister. 2002 – Defender David Raven signed as a professional. He made four first-team appearances but left Anfield to sign for Carlisle United in July 2006. Jack’s treble 1948 - Jack Balmer scored a hat-trick as we beat a Baltimore All Stars side 9-2, with Ken Brierley netting a brace and Billy Liddell, Willie Fagan, Jim Harley and Albert Stubbins all also on the scoresheet. 1953 - We played another friendly in the USA, beating a New England Select 4-0 in Fall River, thanks to two goals from Mervyn Jones and strikes from Jack Smith and Don Welsh. A special day for Emlyn 1972 - Emlyn Hughes nabbed his only full international goal as England beat Wales 3-0 in the British International Championships in Cardiff, up against John Toshack. 1980 - He played in the same tournament, no longer as a red, as England drew 1-1 with Northern Ireland at Wembley, as he captained them for the last time. This was his 23rd full international as skipper, and 61st in total. David Johnson, Terry McDermott and future red coach Joe Corrigan all also featured. Crazy Horse in fact turned out for England twice more on this day in history. 1978 - He captained Ray Clemence and Phil Neal against Kenny Dalglish and Graeme Souness as England won 1-0 at Hampden Park in the British International Championships. 1970 - He played in a B international as England won 1-0 in Colombia. In training for their birthdays 1869 - Left-half George Fleming was born in Bannockburn, Stirlingshire. He struck six times in 82 reds games after signing from Wolverhampton Wanderers in May 1901, helping us to the Second Division title in 1905, before becoming Assistant Trainer the following year. 1895 - Another Assistant Trainer, Jimmy Seddon, was born. He was in this role for fifteen years from 1939, during which time his son Kenneth was on our books. 1916 - Jack Westby was born in Aintree in 1916. He only featured for us during the Second World War. On the committee 2011 – The inaugural members of the club’s Supporters’ Committee were announced. Macca on the move 1983 - Steve McMahon signed for Aston Villa from Everton for £175,000, having turned down the chance to move to Anfield. He netted seven times in 91 games for the Villains, before eventually arriving at Anfield in September 1985 for double the money. Rushie on target 1992 - Ian Rush bagged Wales’s consolation as they were thumped 5-1 in a World Cup qualifier in Romania. Clubmate Dean Saunders also played. On the same day, future red Gary McAllister netted a brace as Scotland beat Canada 3-1 in a friendly in Toronto. International beginning and ends 1931 - Reds left-half Jimmy McDougall won his second and final Scotland cap, skippering them from centre-half in their 3-0 defeat by Italy in Rome. 2016 - Péter Gulácsi won his first cap as an RasenBallsport Leipzig e.V. player as Hungary were held to a goalless draw by Ivory Coast in Budapest. 2017 – Sheyi Ojo played his first game for England Under-20’s in their 3-0 World Championship Finals defeat of Argentina in South Korea. Future red Dominic Solanke converted from the spot, with Ovie Ejaria also in action. 2018 – Future red Ryan Gravenberch won his fourth and last cap for the Dutch Under-17’s as they beat Italy on penalties to win the European Championships, after the Final ended 2-2 in Rotherham. More international goals 1975 - Celtic’s Kenny Dalglish and ex-red Ted MacDougall both scored as Scotland beat Northern Ireland 3-0 in the British International Championships at Hampden Park. 1990 - Future red Dean Saunders grabbed the only goal of Wales’s friendly encounter with Costa Rica at Ninian Park. 1998 - Milan Baroš was on target as the Czech Republic Under-17’s drew 1-1 in a friendly in Poland. Stig Inge Bjørnebye also played for his country that day. 2007 - Craig Lindfield struck while winning his seventh and final cap for England Under-19’s as they beat the Czech Republic 2-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Northampton, with Stephen Darby and Jack Hobbs both also featuring. 1964 - Roy Evans struck as England Schoolboys drew 2-2 with their Republic of Ireland counterparts in Cork. Future red Dave Wilson played for England Under-23’s on the same day, in their 3-0 friendly defeat in Turkey. In Denmark 1914 – We beat Kampartenna 5-2 in Copenhagen, with Billy Lacey bagging a brace, Jackie Sheldon converting a penalty and William Banks and Tom Miller also on target. New coaches 2010 - Dietmar Hamann joined MK Dons as player-coach, while Gary McAllister was appointed First Team Coach at Middlesbrough, although he moved on to Aston Villa just four months later. Hamann played thirteen first-team games while in Milton Keynes, moving on to become a First Team Coach at Leicester City in February 2011. 2016 – Ex-reds boss Brendan Rodgers was appointed Manager of Celtic on a twelve-month rolling contract, leading them to domestic trebles in each of his first two campaigns before leaving for Leicester City in February 2019. 2019 – Former reds First Team Coach Steve Clarke was appointed Manager of Scotland, after a successful spell in charge of Kilmarnock. Also on the move 1955 – Full-back Steve Parr was released by the reds, then joining Exeter City. He made twenty appearances without notching after signing on a free transfer from Farrington Villa in May 1948. 2004 - Reserves right-back Stephen Vaughan left Anfield to join Chester City on a free transfer, making 85 appearances in two spells with the Blues. Meanwhile, Jason McAteer and Phil Babb were both released by Sunderland. McAteer went on to join Tranmere Rovers, while Babb retired from the game. 2008 - Former reserves forward Conal Platt signed for Conference National side Forest Green Rovers. European joy 1998 – Future reds forward Fernando Morientes featured for Real Madrid as they beat Juventus 1-0 in the UEFA Champions League Final in Amsterdam, the first of three European Cups he won. Also in international action 1981 – Ian Rush and future red Joe Corrigan and ex-red Joey Jones all featured as England and Wales shared a goalless draw in the British International Championships at Wembley. 1999 – Vegard Heggem and Øyvind Leonhardsen both played in Norway’s 6-0 thumping of Jamaica in Oslo. 2001 – Future red Kolo Touré played as Ivory Coast drew a World Cup qualifier 1-1 in Tunisia. 2002 – Future reds Peter Crouch, Paul Konchesky and Jermaine Pennant all featured for England Under-21’s as they lost 2-1 to Italy in a European Championships Finals group game in Basel. 2006 – Carl Medjani and future red Martin Škrtel both played in internationals. 2008 – Škrtel featured as Slovakia lost a friendly 1-0 in Turkey, with Damien Plessis also representing his country. 2010 – Future red Mamadou Sakho played for France Under-21’s as they drew 3-3 with Argentina Under-20’s. 2012 – Future red Mohamed Salah appeared for Egypt as they beat Cameroon 2-1 in a friendly in Sudan. 2015 – Future red Ibrahima Konaté played for France Under-16’s in their 2-0 friendly win in Germany.

Gunners silenced 2014 - We blitzed Arsenal in the opening twenty minutes at Anfield, racing into a four-goal lead as we eventually beat the League leaders 5-1. Martin Škrtel and Raheem Sterling each bagged a brace with Daniel Sturridge also on target. When Steven Gerrard was substituted late on, the captain’s armband passed to Luis Suárez, who in turn handed it to Martin Škrtel when he himself was substituted ten minutes later. Ex-Blue Mikel Arteta bagged the Gunners’ consolation from the spot. Have a Wright good day 1980 - Former reds right-back Stephen Wright was born in Bootle. He signed on as a pro in July 1996, netting once in 21 reds appearances before moving to Sunderland for £3m in August 2002, for whom he turned out on 105 occasions. 1872 – Forward Abe Hartley was born in Dumbarton. He signed from Everton for £175 in December 1897, but only notched once in twelve outings before joining Southern League side Southampton the following May. On our way to a treble 1983 - Goals from Graeme Souness, David Hodgson and a Phil Neal penalty gave us a 3-0 Semi-final first-leg lead over Burnley on our way to a third consecutive League Cup triumph. Kolo the champion 2015 – Kolo Touré converted during the penalty shoot-out that decided the African Cup of Nations Final in Equatorial Guinea, after Ivory Coast’s match against Ghana ended goalless after extra time. This was the first time they claimed the trophy since 1992, with Touré winning his 120th and final cap for his country. 2012 – Touré played as his country beat Mali 1-0 in their Semi-final in Gabon, going on to lose the Final to Zambia on penalties. 2004 – Ex-red Rigobert Song captained Cameroon as they lost 2-1 to Nigeria in a Quarter-final in Tunisia. 1998 – Future red Titi Camara skippered Guinea in their 1-0 group stage defeat of Algeria in Burkina Faso. Meanwhile, future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel played as Brazil beat El Salvador 4-0 in a CONCACAF Gold Cup group game in Los Angeles. Another stalemate 2003 - We suffered our fifth straight home League draw, after Geremi’s free-kick gave Middlesbrough the lead with their only first-half attempt on goal. It was their first away League goal for more than thirteen hours. John Arne Riise grabbed a late equaliser after Michael Owen’s mazy run through the penalty area. Bobby off the mark 1958 - We beat Charlton Athletic 3-1 in a Second Division encounter at Anfield. Geoff Twentyman and Billy Liddell struck before Bobby Murdoch bagged his first reds goal. 2006 - We also faced the Addicks, going down 2-0 at The Valley to succumb to our third defeat in four League games, and ninth straight loss in London. Darren Bent converted a soft spot-kick, the first of his five goals past us to date, with Luke Young doubling the home side’s lead in first-half stoppage time. FA Cup memories We have had mixed fortunes in the FA Cup on this day over the years. 1902 - We were knocked out by non-League opposition for the first time, as reigning Southern League champions Southampton won 4-1 in the Second Round, with left-half George Fleming bagging our consolation at The Dell, the first of his six reds strikes. Edgar Chadwick grabbed a brace three months before his move to Anfield, with ex-Evertonian Joe Turner and Bert Lee also netting as inside-left Andy McGuigan played his 37th and final reds game. 1947 - We managed to put out the Cup holders for the first time in our history, beating Derby County 1-0 in the Fifth Round at Anfield, with Jack Balmer heading in the goal. Everton full-back George Jackson actually played in goal for the reds! Digger on the move 1999 - John Barnes joined Charlton Athletic from Newcastle United on a free transfer. He made just two starts for the Addicks, and another ten appearances from off the bench, before retiring at the end of the season. 1989 - He scored in England’s 2-1 friendly win in Greece. Fellow red Peter Beardsley also played. Meanwhile, Steve Nicol appeared for Scotland on the same day, as they lost a World Cup qualifier 3-2 in Cyprus. Thumping the Tractor boys 1975 - John Toshack nabbed a brace while Brian Hall, Alec Lindsay and Peter Cormack all struck as we beat Ipswich Town 5-2 at Anfield. Wearside despair We have twice faced Sunderland in First Division matches on this day in history, losing both games without finding the net. 1908 - We lost 1-0 at Roker Park with centre-half James Gorman playing his 23rd and last reds game and keeper Sam Hardy reaching a century of appearances for the club. George Bridgett netted his fifth and final goal against the reds in the last minute. 1936 - We went down 3-0 at Anfield as Bobby Gurney struck two of his sixteen goals past us, with Pat Gallacher nabbing one of his six. First caps for the youngsters 2005 - Scott Carson won his first cap for England Under-21’s as a red, and ninth to date, as they lost 2-0 to the Netherlands in a friendly at Pride Park, with John Welsh and future red James Milner also appearing. Future reds Head of Physical Performance Dr. Conall Murtagh played for Northern Ireland Under-21’s for the only time in their 2-1 friendly defeat of Scotland in Belfast. Meanwhile, ex-red Jari Litmanen won his first cap as a Hansa Rostock player, and 94th in all, skippering Finland as they beat Latvia 2-1 in the Semi-final of the Cyprus Tournament. Sami Hyypiä also played, while David Raven, Darren Potter and future reds Ramon Calliste and Kolo Touré all also featured for their countries. 2006 - Young reds keeper Paul Willis made his debut for Northern Ireland Under-21’s, conceding and then saving a penalty as they beat Israel 1-0 in a friendly in Nazareth. 1999 – Frode Kippe won his first cap for Norway Under-21’s as a reds player with Riise making his bow at this level in their 2-0 tournament defeat of Finland in Spain. 1997 – John Arne Riise made his debut for Norway Under-16’s in their 3-0 defeat by Spain in the Algarve Tournament. Other first caps 2011 – Conor Coady skippered an England Under-19’s side that included his clubmates Tom Ince and Jack Robinson, with all three making their debut at this level as they lost 1-0 to Germany in Chesterfield. On the same day, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain made his Under-21’s debut, winning his only cap while with Southampton in their 1-0 friendly defeat by Italy in Empoli. Future reds Thiago Alcântara and Kolo Touré also played for their countries that day. 1989 - Dean Saunders won his first cap as a Derby County player, and twelfth in total, as Wales drew 3-3 with Israel in a friendly in Tel Aviv. Future reds player Ronnie Rosenthal and Assistant Manager Colin Pascoe also featured. 2007 - Milan Baroš won his first cap while with Olympique Lyonnais as the Czech Republic beat Belgium 2-0 in a friendly in Brussels. On the same day, Djibril Cissé won his first cap while on loan at Olympique de Marseille as France were beaten 1-0 by Argentina at the Stade de France, with ex-red Nicolas Anelka also featuring. Signing on 2013 – Defender Martin Kelly signed a new contract with the reds. He suffered badly with injuries during his career at Anfield, notching once in 62 senior outings before being sold to Crystal Palace in August 2014 for a reported £2m. 1928 – Scottish international right-half Tom Morrison joined the reds from St. Mirren for £4,000. He struck four times in 254 reds games, moving on to Sunderland in November 1935. More youngsters in action 2005 – Future red Alberto Aquilani struck for Italy Under-21’s as they beat Russia 2-1. On the same day, future red Daniel Agger featured as Denmark Under-21’s won a European Championships qualifier 1-0 in Greece. 1961 - Gerry Byrne won his only England Under-23’s cap as they beat Wales 2-0 at Goodison Park. 2009 – Skipper Emiliano Insúa was sent off as Argentina lost 1-0 to Colombia in the final phase of the Sudamericano Sub-20 “Juventud de América” tournament in Venezuela. Ronald Huth featured for Paraguay as they beat Brazil in the same competition that day. 2018 – Future red Ki-Jana Hoever played as the Netherlands beat Germany on penalties after their friendly with Germany ended 2-2 in Portugal. 2022 – Future red Ben Doak skippered Scotland Under-17’s in their 3-0 friendly defeat by England in Edinburgh. Jessie passes on 2012 - Bob Paisley’s widow Jessie died, aged 96. Out on loan 1995 - Paul Stewart joined First Division Burnley on loan. He made six appearances for the Clarets as they headed towards relegation. On the same day, future red Øyvind Leonhardsen played in Norway’s 2-0 friendly win in Cyprus. 1985 - Mike Hooper temporarily joined basement side Wrexham from his hometown club Bristol City. He played twenty times before signing permanently that July. 2000 - Reserves defender Neil Murphy joined Luton Town on loan. He spent a month at Kenilworth Road before returning to Anfield, although he was released at the end of the season, joining Steve McMahon’s Blackpool on a free transfer. Also in international action 1941 – Ex-red Alf Hanson played for England as they lost 3-2 to Scotland in a Wartime International at St. James’ Park. 1947 – Future red Sammy Smyth played for Ireland in their 3-1 defeat by England in an amateur international. 1978 – Future red Avi Cohen played as Israel beat Denmark 2-0 in a friendly in Jaffa. 2017 – Midfielder Allan won his seventh and last cap for Brazil Under-20’s as they drew 2-2 with Argentina in a South American Championships final stage game in Ecuador. On the same day, Bernard Diomède took charge of France Under-18’s as they drew 1-1 with Italy in a friendly in Clairefontaine-en-Yvelines. Banned 2017 – Ex-reds reserves keeper Dean Bouzanis was banned for five games for seemingly calling Melbourne Victory’s Kosovan-Albanian player Besart Berisha a gypsy while playing for Melbourne City.

Happy birthdays 1971 - Former striker Stan Collymore was born in Stone. He netted 35 times in 81 reds games after signing from Nottingham Forest for a British record £8.5m fee in July 1995. He was offloaded to Aston Villa in February 2000 for £7m, where he again failed to fulfil his potential. 1985 - Momo Sissoko was born in Mont Saint Agnain, France. He signed from Valencia for £5.6m in July 2005 and helped us to claim the FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FA Community Shield, playing 87 times and scoring just once. He had previously been signed by Rafael Benítez while he was in Spain, from Auxerre, and was sold to Juventus for £8.2m in January 2008. 1954 – Piet Hamberg was born in Winschoten in the Netherlands. He joined the reds as Academy Technical Manager in June 2007, staying in the role for two years. 1986 – Ex-reserves custodian David Martin was born in Romford. The son of West Ham United centre-back Alvin signed from MK Dons for £250,000 in January 2006 and sat on the bench nineteen times without making a senior appearance, returning to Stadium:mk in May 2010. 1980 – First-team physiotherapist Matt Konopinski was born in Leeds. He joined the club in February 2009 from Barnsley, moving on to the FA in October 2018. 1990 - Jonathan Woodgate was born in Nunthorpe, Middlesbrough. He worked as a scout for the reds during the 2016/17 season. In comes Thommo 1971 - Phil Thompson signed as a professional, the day after his seventeenth birthday. He notched thirteen times in 477 games for the reds, many as skipper, as we won two European Cups, seven League titles, the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, two League Cups and five FA Charity Shields. He later had two separate spells on the backroom staff, under Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness and Gérard Houllier, and is now working in the media. 1914 – Forward Jimmy Nicholl signed from Middlesbrough, bagging fourteen goals in 59 outings before moving on to Wishaw Thistle in 1915. He had featured in our FA Cup Final defeat to Burnley in April 1914. 2015 – Midfielder Jordan Williams signed a new contract until 2017. He made his only senior appearance in a League Cup tie against Middlesbrough in September 2014, moving on to Rochdale in June 2018. Red farewells 2011 – Fernando Torres struck his last two reds goals as we won 3-0 at Wolverhampton Wanderers, with Raúl Meireles’ stunning volley coming between his strikes. We opened the scoring by breaking Wolves’ offside trap, with Richard Keys and Andy Gray’s disparaging remarks about the female assistant referee on Sky leading to their eventual departure. Ex-reds reserve Adam Hammill made his debut for the home side as a substitute. 2000 – Middlesbrough held us to a dour goalless draw at Anfield, with forward Jon Newby coming off the bench to make his fourth and final reds appearance. 1977 – Left-back Brian Kettle played his fourth and final reds game as we lost 2-1 at Norwich City, giving away an early penalty that Martin Peters converted, one of his fourteen goals against us. Jimmy Neighbour doubled the lead straight after the break, before Phil Neal struck from the spot for our eventual consolation. Warnock walks 2007 - Stephen Warnock was sold to Blackburn Rovers for a fee believed to be £1.5m. He had played 67 reds games, netting just once, and turned out 109 times for Rovers, striking six times, before joining Aston Villa in August 2009. On the same day, Milan Baroš joined Olympique Lyonnais from Aston Villa in a swap deal for John Carew, after fourteen goals in 51 games for Villa. A record crowd 2006 - The then biggest crowd to watch the reds in the Premier League, of 67,874, witnessed a 1-0 defeat at Manchester United when we succumbed to a late Rio Ferdinand goal. 2002 - The previous record was just 275 supporters fewer, set when Danny Murphy grabbed a late winner as we won at Old Trafford for the second season in a row. Yet another treble 1927 - Gordon Hodgson scored one of his seventeen reds hat-tricks as we beat Derby County 3-2 at Anfield. Harry Bedford struck one of his nine goals against the reds, with Jack Whitehouse also on target as full-back Tommy Lucas played his 200th League game for the reds. In Africa 2000 - Rigobert Song played for his country as Cameroon drew 1-1 with Ghana in an Africa Cup of Nations Finals group game in Accra. Future red Alberto Aquilani also represented his country that day. 2008 - Song also featured in a 4-2 to Egypt in another group game in Ghana. 2012 – Future red Kolo Touré played in an Africa Cup of Nations group game as Ivory Coast beat Sudan 1-0 in Equatorial Guinea. Ex-red Daniel Sjölund was also in international action that day. 2013 – Touré featured again as Togo lost 2-1 in South Africa. On the same day, Carl Medjani won his last cap as an AJ Ajaccio player as Algeria lost 1-0 to Tunisia. 2017 – Ex-red Toni Silva played for Guinea-Bissau as they lost 2-0 to Burkina Faso in a group game in Gabon. Cally’s milestone 1972 - Ian Callaghan played his 400th League game in our goalless draw at Wolverhampton Wanderers, while forward Alun Evans made his 111th and final reds appearance and winger Peter Thompson played for the 416th and last time. Southern despair 2018 – We were beaten 1-0 at Swansea City, with centre-back Alfie Mawson on target before the break.
