This was our final game of the season, as we ended up in second place behind Derby County. 1965 - Bill Shankly fielded a team of eleven reserves in our League match at Wolverhampton Wanderers, which came only five days before the FA Cup Final. John Sealey scored in his only reds appearance, with Geoff Strong and Alf Arrowsmith also on target as we won 3-1. Full-backs Alan Hignett and Tom Lowry and keeper Billy Molyneux also played their only senior reds games, while left-back Phil Ferns made his 28th and last appearance for the club and inside-left Gordon Wallace played for the 22nd and final time. 1947 - Winger Billy Watkinson scored on his Liverpool debut as we came from behind to win 2-1 at Aston Villa, with Willie Fagan nabbing the other. 1992 - Sami Hyypiä played his first game in the Finnish Premier League, as Myllykosken Pallo-47 won 2-0 at Jazz. 2008 - Jonjo Shelvey became Charlton Athletic’s youngest ever player, aged sixteen years and 59 days. He played the full ninety minutes in their 3-0 Championship defeat at Barnsley. Ton up for Mo 2019 – Mohamed Salah played his hundredth reds game as we thumped Huddersfield Town 5-0 at Anfield, reaching a club record 69 goals in an opening century of outings. Naby Keïta scored our fastest ever Premiership goal after just fourteen seconds, with Sadio Mané and Salah each bagging a brace. 1924 – Full-back Tommy Lucas and right-half Jock McNab both reached a century of League games for the reds as we beat Notts County at Anfield, with Dick Forshaw netting the only goal of the game. Youngsters win again 2007 - We retained the FA Youth Cup, to claim it for the third time. Centre-back Robbie Threlfall, who had scored an own goal in the first leg, bagged the only goal of the game at Old Trafford, to wipe out Manchester United’s 2-1 first leg victory. We went on to secure the trophy by winning a penalty shoot-out 4-3, with keeper David Roberts saving one of United’s spot-kicks. Red endings 2008 - Peter Crouch grabbed his 42nd and final reds goal as we were held to a 2-2 draw at Birmingham City. We had fallen two goals behind to Mikael Forssell and Sebastian Larsson strikes before Crouch and then Yossi Benayoun netted to ensure we qualified for the next season’s Champions League. 1952 – Inside-forward Jack Haigh played his eleventh and last reds game as we ended the season with a 4-0 top-flight thumping at Preston North End, with defender George Whitworth appearing for the ninth and final time. The legendary Tom Finney scored one of his five goals past us, with Charlie Wayman bagging two of his six against us and Angus Morrison netting one of his four. 1902 – Right-back Tom Robertson played his 47th and last reds game as we drew 1-1 at Blackburn Rovers. Walter Whittaker struck one of his six goals against the reds. Johnny Walker scored in his 120th and final reds fame with Sam Raybould having a penalty saved. Hammerings 2023 – We beat West Ham United 2-1 at the London Stadium, despite falling behind to Lucas Paquetá’s strike. Cody Gakpo soon levelled, with Joël Matip heading in a second-half winner, his eleventh and last goal for the club. 2006 - Luis García and West Ham United’s Hayden Mullins were both sent off at Upton Park, with Mullins becoming the fifteenth opposition player sent off against us that season. Both therefore had to sit out the FA Cup Final two weeks later as a result. Djibril Cissé bagged a brace either side of a Nigel Reo-Coker goal as we won 2-1. The game was preceded by a perfectly observed minute’s silence for former Hammers manager John Lyall, who died the week before. Four for St. Michael 2003 - Michael Owen bagged four goals, including his hundredth League goal, as we trounced West Bromwich Albion 6-0 at The Hawthorns, our record win over the Baggies. Michael’s fourth goal, our fifth, was our 700th in the Premiership. Milan Baroš added a brace. Gary’s treble 1986 - Defender Gary Gillespie scored a second-half hat-trick past David Seaman, including a penalty, as we thumped already relegated Birmingham City 5-0 at Anfield. Ian Rush opened the scoring, with Jan Mølby also on target from the spot. Future red Julian Dicks was on the losing side that day. This win kept us on course for our sixteenth League title. Mark Walters wins the title for Leeds 1992 - Mark Walters scored the decisive second goal that handed the League title to Leeds United, as we beat Manchester United 2-0 at Anfield despite both Nicky Tanner and Ian Rush having to be substituted inside the first half hour. Ian Rush had scored the first, his first ever goal against the Mancs. The Kop crowed “now you’re gonna believe us, you’ll never win the League”, while Ray Houghton played his 200th game for the club while Barry Venison appeared for the 158th and last time. 2002 - Walters joined Bristol Rovers from Swindon Town on a free transfer. He went on to play nearly a hundred times for the Pirates, netting fourteen times. 1941 - We also entertained United, with Cyril Done and Billy Liddell on target in a 2-1 Wartime League victory. Honoured 2009 - Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres were both voted in the PFA Team of the Year, with ex-red Nicolas Anelka and future red Glen Johnson also included. Ex-red Jack Hobbs was named in the League One equivalent. 2015 - Philippe Coutinho was named in the PFA Team of the Year. Beginning and ends 1971 - Joe Fagan’s son Kit made his second and final senior appearance as we drew 2-2 at Manchester City in the League, Bill Shankly’s 600th game in charge of the reds. Bobby Graham netted both our goals while midfielder Steve Arnold played his second and last reds game with keeper Tommy Lawrence appearing for the 390th and final time. Ian Ross put through his own net, with Steve Carter also on target for the home side. The reds were fined £7,500 for fielding a weakened team, with the match only two days after a League match at Nottingham Forest and just two days before the second leg of our Fairs Cup Semi-final at Leeds United. Derby joy 1943 - We thumped Everton 4-1 at Anfield with Willie Fagan, Jack Balmer, Cyril Done and Berry Nieuwenhuys netting in this Wartime League fixture. A happy day 1973 - Roy Evans married Mary at Liverpool’s Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral. 2010 – Ex-red Álvaro Arbeloa’s wife Carlota gave birth to a daughter, Alba. A double for Quasi 1989 - Peter Beardsley played his first competitive game following the Hillsborough disaster, bagging a brace as England thumped Albania 5-0 in a World Cup qualifier at Wembley. On the same day, future red Karl-Heinz Riedle netted in West Germany’s 1-1 draw with the Netherlands in Feyenoord. The two players would meet in the World Cup Semi-final the following year. István Kozma won his last cap in his first spell as an Újpest player as Hungary lost a friendly 4-0 in Italy. Also playing in internationals that day were Ray Houghton, Steve Staunton, Ronnie Whelan, future red Dean Saunders and ex-red Kevin Sheedy. 1995 – Kozma represented his country again, as Hungary beat Sweden 1-0 in a Euro 96 qualifier in Budapest. International beginnings and ends 2000 - Future red Steve Finnan won his first senior cap in the Republic of Ireland’s 1-0 friendly defeat by Greece at Lansdowne Road, while future reds recruiter Mark Burchill played for Scotland for the sixth and final time as they shared a goalless friendly draw with the Netherlands in Arnhem. Steve Staunton and future red Robbie Keane also played. Dietmar Hamann, ex-red Don Hutchison and future reds Markus Babbel, Igor Bišcan, Jari Litmanen, John Arne Riise, Abel Xavier, Bolo Zenden and Christian Ziege all also featured in friendly action that day. 2017 - Owen Beck won his only Under-15’s cap as Wales were thumped 5-1 by Belgium in Germany. International goals galore 1995 - Ex-red Steve Staunton netted the only goal of the Republic of Ireland’s European Championships qualifier against Portugal at Lansdowne Road. Phil Babb and ex-red John Aldridge also played, while Ray Houghton won his 63rd cap, and first one as a Crystal Palace player. On the same day, ex-red Dean Saunders was on target as Wales drew 1-1 in Germany as they tried to qualify for Euro ’96. Ian Rush and future reds Markus Babbel and Christian Ziege also played. Future red Patrik Berger scored in his third consecutive game for the Czech Republic as they beat the Netherlands 3-1 in Prague. Also representing their countries in qualifiers that day were future reds Sami Hyypiä, Øyvind Leonhardsen, Jari Litmanen and Gary McAllister, while Roy Hodgson took charge of Switzerland. 2001 – Future red Glen Johnson scored as England Under-16’s beat Hungary 1-0 in a European Championships Finals group game in Huddersfield. Other reds games 1980 – We were held to a goalless draw by Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park as we edged closer to our twelfth League title. 1958 – Jimmy Harrower netted as Barnsley drew a Second Division encounter 1-1 at Anfield as Johnny McCann levelled after just a minute, the last of his four goals against the reds. This ensured we ended the campaign in fourth. 1955 – We won a Second Division fixture 3-0 at West Ham United. Eric Anderson bagged a brace, with John Evans also on target. Rushie the ambassador 2010 – Legendary reds striker Ian Rush was appointed as our Soccer Schools Ambassador. Walsh and Welsh for England 1941 - Future reds boss Don Welsh scored all of England’s goals as they thumped Wales 4-1 in a Wartime international at the City Ground in Nottingham. Fellow future red Cyril Sidlow was on the losing side. 1983 - Luton Town’s Paul Walsh bagged his first goal for England Under-21’s on his fourth appearance as they beat Hungary 1-0 in a European Championships qualifier at St. James’ Park. Fellow future reds John Barnes and Mark Wright both also played. Youngsters in action 2001 – Alberto Aquilani played for Italy Under-16’s as they drew 1-1 with Switzerland in the European Championships Finals in Leeds. 2002 – He won his sixth and final Under-18’s cap in a 1-0 defeat of Sweden. 1998 - Milan Baroš made his debut for the Czech Republic Under-17’s as they thumped Austria 5-0 in a tournament in Slovenia. On the same day, fellow future red John Arne Riise made his bow for Norway Under-18’s in their 4-1 defeat by the USA in Slovakia. On the move 2002 - Rickie Lambert joined Stockport County from Macclesfield Town for £300,000 after ten strikes in 49 games, still the record fee the Silkmen have received. 2016 – Ex-reds First Team Coach Kevin Keen left as Manager of Colchester United by mutual consent, having failed to save them from the drop to League Two. 2023 – Spanish-born centre-half Wellity Lucky signed pro terms with the reds, having joined the Academy at Under-13’s level. 2024 – Northern Irish midfielder Kieran Morrison signed as a professional, making it onto the first-team bench for the first time in our UEFA Champions League game at PSV Eindhoven in January 2025. Also in international action 1919 – Ephraim Longworth and ex-red Sam Hardy both played for England as they drew 2-2 with Scotland in a Victory International at Goodison Park. 1993 - Future reds Assistant Manager Christian Damiano managed France Under-16’s as they drew 1-1 with Russia in a European Championships Finals group game in Istanbul. 2015 – Ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper took charge of England Under-16’s as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Japan at St. George’s Park.

Red trebles 1999 - Robbie Fowler bagged a treble as we secured our record Premiership win, thrashing Southampton 7-1 at Anfield, with future loanee Paul Jones in the Saints’ goal. Dominic Matteo grabbed his first reds goal while Michael Owen, David Thompson and even Jamie Carragher were also on target. Robbie’s second goal was his hundredth League strike, with Egil Ostenstad nabbing the visitors’ consolation. 1909 - Inside-left Ronald Orr netted three as we beat Lincoln City 5-1 in an FA Cup First Round tie at Anfield. Joe Hewitt and Jack Parkinson nabbed the others. In comes Roy 1964 - Roy Evans signed for the reds on the newly introduced ‘B’ form, a precursor to a full apprenticeship. He became one of the club’s greatest servants, serving as fan, left-back, reserves coach, Assistant Manager and then finally the top job for four years. Happy birthdays 1995 – Japanese forward Takumi Minamino was born in Izumisano. He signed from Red Bull Salzburg for £7.25m in January 2020, bagging fourteen goals in 55 reds outings as helped us to claim the League title and head towards two cup victories at Wembley. He was sold to AS Monaco for an initial €15m in June 2022. 2006 – Forward Jayden Danns was born in Liverpool. He joined the Academy aged eight, so far notching twice in six outings and helping us to claim the League Cup at Wembley in February 2024. 1961 - Former goalkeeping coach José Ochotorena was born in San Sebastián, Guipúzcoa in Spain. He had previously coached the goalkeepers under Rafael Benítez at Valencia as well as for the Spanish national team before accompanying Rafa to Melwood, returning to the Mestalla in July 2007. 1881 - Scottish wing-half Tommy Fairfoul was born in West Calder, Midlothian. He signed from Third Lanark in 1913 and played 71 reds games without scoring, including the 1914 FA Cup Final, before being suspended for the match rigging scandal against Manchester United in April 1915. He then became a taxi owner in Liverpool. 1919 – Centre-half John Easdale was born in Dumbarton. He only played two senior games after arriving from junior football in February 1937, moving down into the Third Division to join Stockport County in 1948. Xabi Alonso eat your heart out 1926 - Reds left-back Donald McKinlay scored from ten yards inside his own half, as we beat West Ham United 2-1 at Upton Park. Tom Scott grabbed the other, with Vic Watson bagging the first of his nine strikes against the reds while right-back Ephraim Longworth played his 300th League game for the reds. Nando’s century 2011 – Fernando Torres played his hundredth League game as we were held to a 2-2 derby draw at Anfield, Kenny Dalglish’s first home game of his second spell in charge. Raul Meireles scored his first reds goal to open the scoring, with Dirk Kuyt salvaging a point from the spot after we fell behind to goals from Sylvain Distin and Jermaine Beckford in the second half. Maxi’s bow 2010 - We were held to a 1-1 draw at Stoke City, with Sotirios Kyrgiakos giving us the lead with his first reds goal. Maxi Rodríguez made his reds bow, while this was the first time we had played a first-class match since shirt numbers were introduced when no player was wearing any of the numbers from one to eleven. Robert Huth grabbed a last-minute equaliser after we had been denied a strong penalty claim for a challenge on Lucas, with there still being time for Dirk Kuyt to head against a post. 1897 – George Allan bagged the only goal of our home game with Stoke. Billy Heames had to go off injured shortly after the break, reducing the visitors to ten men for the rest of the game. Lawro’s last 1988 – Mark Lawrenson was substituted with an ankle injury in our 2-0 Anfield defeat of Arsenal that led to his retirement from playing just two months later aged thirty. This was his 356th and last reds game. John Aldridge and Peter Beardsley netted as we stretched our unbeaten run to 23 games that season. European defeat 1985 - We lost 2-0 at Juventus in the UEFA Super Cup, with Zbigniew Boniek grabbing both the goals. Milestones against 1932 - George Brown scored four of his nine goals past us as Aston Villa thumped us 6-1 at Villa Park, with Eric Houghton bagging one of his six goals against us and George Stephenson also netting. Harold Barton grabbed our consolation. 1965 – We beat Sheffield Wednesday 4-2 at Anfield, with Roger Hunt bagging a brace after Mark Pearson had given the Owls the lead, the 3,000th goal we had conceded in the top flight. John Hickson also struck for the visitors, with Gordon Milne and Ian St. John securing victory late on. Beaten on the road 1954 - We suffered our twentieth straight away League defeat as we lost 2-1 at Preston North End. Unsurprisingly, this remains a club record. Inside-forward Kevin Baron struck his 32nd goal in his 153rd and final reds game. Charlie Wayman netted the last of his six goals against the reds, with Bobby Foster also scoring. 1971 - Gerry Queen struck the only goal of the game as Crystal Palace beat us for the first time at the sixth time of asking in all competitions, in our League meeting at Selhurst Park. Midfielder Steve Arnold came off the bench for the first of his two senior reds appearances. Seeing red 1960 - Dave Hickson was sent off after two quick-fire late bookings as we beat Sheffield United 3-0 at Anfield in a First Division fixture. Roger Hunt bagged a brace, with Jimmy Melia netting his fiftieth reds goal. Beating the Blues 1943 - We defeated Everton 2-1 in a Wartime League match at Anfield, with Jack Balmer and Cyril Done on target. Beating the Wearsiders We have twice beaten Sunderland 2-1 at Anfield in the First Division on this day in history. 1904 - Sam Raybould and Jack Cox were on target. 1915 - Tom Miller and Fred Pagnam netted in the final minutes as forward Billy Lacey and inside-forward Tom Miller both reached a century of reds games. Most recently 2022 – We beat Brentford 3-0 at Anfield, with Fabinho heading us in front just before the break. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Takumi Minamino both netted in the second half. Digger for the League 1991 - John Barnes represented the Football League in a game against an Italian League side in Napoli. New bosses 2008 - Kevin Keegan was announced as Manager of Newcastle United for the second time, to jubilant scenes on Tyneside. However, he only stayed for eight months, winning just six out of his 21 games. On the same day, ex-red El-Hadji Diouf played as Senegal beat Benin 2-1 in a friendly. 2006 - Roy Hodgson took over as Manager of Finland, having been appointed the previous August. 2020 – Ex-reds winger Mark Kennedy was appointed Head Coach of Macclesfield Town, only taking charge of twelve games before resigning in August after the League was suspended due to COVID and the club were relegated after a points deduction due to financial issues. Future reds debutants 2000 – Alberto Aquilani made his debut for Italy Under-15’s in their goalless draw with Uruguay. On the same day, Brad Friedel played in the USA’s 1-1 friendly draw with Iran in Pasadena. 1974 - Terry McDermott won his only Under-23’s cap as England were held to a goalless draw by Wales at Ashton Gate. 2022 – Ex-red Steven Caulker played for Sierra Leone as they drew 2-2 with Ivory Coast in an Africa Cup of Nations Finals group game in Cameroon. 2018 – Rigobert Song took charge of Cameroon as they lost 1-0 to Congo in an African Nations Championship group game in Morocco. 2012 – Future red Kolo Touré played as the Ivory Coast beat Libya 1-0 in a friendly in Abu Dhabi. 2002 – Robbie Foy featured for Scotland Under-17’s in their 2-0 friendly win in Malta. Other reds games 1993 –We lost 2-0 at Wimbledon, with John Fashanu scoring one of his five goals against us, with Steve Cotterill also scoring. 1982 – Ronnie Whelan and Kenny Dalglish netted as we beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 at Anfield. 1973 – We beat Burnley 3-0 in an FA Cup Third Round replay in L4, with John Toshack netting twice and Peter Cormack also on the scoresheet. 1937 – We lost 3-0 at Norwich City in a Third Round encounter. On the move again 1930 – Forward Billy Millar left the reds to sign for Barrow, having scored twice in three games since arriving from Linfield for £1,150 in March 1928. He went on to set a scoring record at Barrow by netting thirty goals in as many Third Division North games, as well as making his debut for Northern Ireland. 1987 - Future reds loanee keeper Mark Prudhoe joined Sheffield Wednesday on loan from Walsall. He did not make a first-team appearance while at Hillsborough, as was the case when he arrived at Anfield in November 1994. 2014 – Ex-reserves defender Gareth Roberts had his contract with Bury terminated despite being club captain. He had played just thirteen times for the Shakers. 2017 – Ex-reds left-back Aly Cissokho joined Olympiacos on loan from Aston Villa. He played once in ten outings while in Greece. 2019 – Ex-reds midfielder Momo Sissoko signed for Sochaux-Montbéliard, playing thirteen times before the end of the season. 2022 - Rafael Benítez was sacked as Manager of Everton, after just seven months in charge. 2023 – Midfielder Jake Cain left the reds to sign for Swindon Town after just one senior reds appearance, netting once in sixteen outings in his first campaign with the Robins. 2024 – Centre-half Rhys Williams joined Port Vale on loan. However, he failed to make a matchday squad, returning to Anfield after just a couple of weeks to rehabilitate from an injury.

Off the mark 2018 – Dutch centre-half Virgil van Dijk scored on his reds bow as we beat Everton 2-1 in the FA Cup Third Round at Anfield. James Milner opened the scoring from the spot after a foul on Adam Lallana, with Gylfi Sigurdsson netting one of his five goals past us to level the scores. Our new record signing nodded in the winner late on to send the crowd into raptures. Happy birthdays 1957 - David Fairclough was born in Liverpool. He signed pro terms in January 1974, bagging 55 goals in 154 reds games, two-fifths of which were from off the bench. The bionic carrot helped us to three League titles, European Cup, UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and two League Cups before moving on to Luzern in July 1983. 1874 - Right-back Archie Goldie was born in Hurlford, Ayrshire. He signed from Clyde in June 1895 and helped us to the Second Division title the following year, netting once in 149 reds games, many alongside his brother, left-half Bill. He left Anfield to sign for New Brighton Tower in 1900. 1951 - Midfielder Steve Arnold was born in Wembley. He signed from Crewe Alexandra for £12,000 in September 1970 but only ever made two first-team appearances before moving to Rochdale in June 1973. His career never really took off, and he retired from the game aged 23. 1898 – Inside-forward Billy McDevitt was born in Belfast. He signed from Swansea Town in 1923, being converted into a centre-half, but played just four times before moving on to Exeter City for a club record fee in May 1925. King Billy’s memorable debut 1946 - Billy Liddell scored on his official reds bow as we won 2-0 at Chester in an FA Cup Third Round first leg match. Inside-forward Kevin Baron, defender Fred Finney, centre-half Laurie Hughes, full-back Ray Lambert, keeper Harry Wheeler Nickson, left-half Bob Paisley and winger Bob Priday all also debuted in this game. Willie Fagan nabbed the other goal, but unfortunately, we were knocked out by Bolton Wanderers in the next round. Reds farewells 2011 – Roy Hodgson took charge of his last reds game as we were beaten 3-1 at Blackburn Rovers. Left-back Paul Konchesky made his eighteenth and final reds appearance, while Steven Gerrard missed a penalty after notching from open play. When Ryan Babel came on for David N’Gog, this was the 3,000th substitution in the club’s history. Benjani bagged a brace, the last of his four goals past us, after Martin Olsson had opened the scoring. 1974 - Outside-left Peter Thompson joined Bolton Wanderers for £18,000 after a loan spell. He had netted 54 times in 416 reds games, helping us to win two League titles and our first FA Cup, after signing for £37,000 from Preston North End in August 1963. 1895 – We were thumped 5-0 by The Wednesday at Olive Grove in a top-flight encounter. Right-back Andrew Hannah played his 69th and last reds game. Fred Spiksley struck the first two of his four goals against the reds, with Harry Woolhouse bagging a brace and Harry Brandon also on the scoresheet. 2009 – Academy forward Marvin Pourié was sold to Schalke 04. He had arrived from Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Heading back to Wembley 2016 – We won the first leg of our League Cup Semi-final 1-0 at Stoke City thanks to a Jordon Ibe strike, despite three players suffering hamstring injuries during the game. Curtis off the mark 2020 – Curtis Jones bagged his first reds strike, the only goal of our FA Cup Third Round encounter with Everton at Anfield. Left-back Yasser Larouci, forward Takumi Minamino and centre-half Nat Phillips all made their reds bows as we fielded a young side. The Latics again 2014 - We faced Oldham Athletic for the third consecutive season in the FA Cup, this time winning our Third Round tie 2-0 at Anfield. Spanish forward Iago Aspas struck his only reds goal, with James Tarkowski putting through his own net late on. Boss Brendan Rodgers’ son Anton came on as a late substitute for the visitors. Stevie’s ton up 2015 - James Shea became the hundredth different goalkeeper that Steven Gerrard scored past for the reds as we beat AFC Wimbledon 2-1 in an FA Cup Third Round tie at the Cherry Red Records Stadium. The skipper was on target either side of the break against the League Two side. Pelle signs on 2005 - Argentine centre-back Mauricio Pellegrino signed from Valencia on a free transfer. He arrived at Anfield with an impressive reputation, having previously won the Spanish League three times and the UEFA Cup, as well as appearing in two Champions League Finals. On the move 2024 – Brazilian keeper Marcelo Pitaluga penned new terms as well as moving to St. Patrick’s Athletic on a temporary basis, but he only made seven senior appearances while in Ireland. 2021 – Forward Liam Millar signed a new contract with the reds, joining Charlton Athletic on loan on the same day. The Canadian international only netted twice in 27 outings, moving on permanently to Basel for a reported £1.3m in July 2021. 2018 – Young defender Corey Whelan joined Yeovil Town on loan, netting once in eleven games for the Glovers. Espanyol, notching once in 21 games. 2006 - Ex-reds reserves keeper Tony Warner joined Fulham from Cardiff City for an undisclosed fee, after a loan spell at Craven Cottage.
