Liddell’s last 1960 - Billy Liddell scored his 228th and final reds goal, becoming our oldest post-war goalscorer, aged 38 years 55 days. We beat Stoke City 5-1 in the Second Division at Anfield, with Jimmy Harrower adding a brace, and Roger Hunt and Dave Hickson also netting. Hickson was in fact on target for the fourth consecutive match, in which time he had struck six times in total. A new boss 1951 – Don Welsh was officially appointed Manager. His contract awarded him £1,500 per year, with an additional annual £500 for expenses. He took charge of 232 reds games, winning just 81, and has the indignity of being our first boss to get the sack, after presiding over our relegation from the top flight in 1954, and failing to lead us back to the promised land. A manc thrashing 2023 – We secured our record victory over Manchester United, thumping them 7-0 at Anfield, their joint worst ever defeat. Cody Gakpo gave us the lead shortly before the break, but the floodgates opened in the second half. Darwin Núñez headed in before Gakpo netted again. Mohamed Salah bagged a brace as he became our all-time top Premier League goalscorer. Núñez nodded in again, with Roberto Firmino completing the scoring. Fernando’s treble 2008 - Fernando Torres scored a hat-trick as we thumped West Ham United 4-0 at Anfield, with Steven Gerrard completing the scoring. This was his second successive home treble. 2022 – Sadio Mané bagged the only goal of the Hammers’ League visit to Anfield. Crazy Horse OBE 1980 - Emlyn Hughes was presented with the OBE by Her Majesty the Queen. ‘Crazy Horse’ played 665 times in his twelve years at Anfield, netting 49 times and winning two European Cups, four League titles, two UEFA Cups, FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup and two FA Charity Shields. His greatest season was probably 1976/77 when he captained the side to within a whisker of the treble, as well as being voted the Football Writers’ Player of the Year. Sadly, he died in November 2004. More goal feasts against the Potters 1983 - We beat Stoke City 5-1 at Anfield again. Kenny Dalglish scored twice, with the other goals coming from Phil Neal, Craig Johnston and Graeme Souness. Kenny netted his 300th senior club goal that day as Ian Rush reached a century of reds outings, with future Toffee Paul Bracewell on target for the visitors. 1955 - A Johnny Evans brace was not enough as we lost 4-2. This was our first home defeat to the Potters after nineteen previous wins and seven draws. Johnny King netted the first two of his five goals past us, with Harry Oscroft nabbing one of his six and Jack Malkin also on target. Mixed fortunes against the Hoops We faced Queens Park Rangers twice on this day in the 1980’s. 1986 - We were held 2-2 at Anfield in the second leg of our League Cup Semi-final, despite twice taking the lead on the night. Steve McMahon and Craig Johnston netted our goals, but Jan Mølby missed a penalty and Gary Gillespie and Ronnie Whelan both scored own goals. This put us out of the competition, as we had lost the first game 1-0 away from home. Bruce Grobbelaar was playing his 300th reds game. 1988 - We won at Loftus Road in the League, with John Barnes scoring the only goal of the game. This was our last outing on their controversial plastic playing surface. Alex Watson made the first of his nine senior appearances in this game. Happy birthdays 1988 - Damien Plessis was born in Neuville-aux-Bois, France. He signed in August 2007 from Olympique Lyonnais on a free transfer, making an impressive debut at Arsenal in the following April. He struck once in eight senior appearances, before being sold to Panathinaikos in August 2010. 1896 - Centre-half David Pratt was born in Lochore, Fife. He played 84 times for the reds after signing from Bradford City in January 1923, scoring just once and being known for his long throw-ins. He left Anfield to sign for Bury in November 1927. 1955 – Reserves keeper Bob Wardle was born in Halifax. He joined from Shrewsbury Town in a straight swap for Steve Ogrizovic in August 1982, but never made our first team, and was forced to retire through injury inside a year. 1986 - Former reserves keeper Paul Willis was born in Northern Ireland. He was released in the summer of 2006 after failing to break through to the first team, later playing for AFC Liverpool. 1993- Centre-back Stephen Sama was born in Bamenda, Cameroon. He signed from Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund in July 2009. He never played a senior game, moving on to VfB Stuttgart in September 2014. 1955 – Scottish keeper Bill McCann died. He signed from Abercorn in May 1894, playing seventeen times before moving on the following March. Beginning and end 2005 - Scott Carson made his reds debut as we lost 1-0 at Newcastle United thanks to a goal from Laurent Robert. This was Graeme Souness’ first win over the reds as opposing Manager, at the eleventh attempt. 1977 - We also faced the Geordies when Steve Heighway grabbed the only goal of the game at Anfield. Phil Neal had a spot-kick saved by keeper Mike Mahoney. 1949 – We lost 2-1 at Chelsea despite going in at the break ahead through Jimmy Payne. Roy Bentley scored the first of his five past us with Ken Armstrong nabbing the winner. Winger Bob Priday was making his fortieth and last reds appearance. International goalscorers 1923 - Ephraim Longworth netted his only goal for England as they drew 2-2 with Wales in the British International Championships in Cardiff, playing alongside clubmate Harry Chambers. Ex-red Robert Matthews won his second Welsh cap in this game, the only one he won while a Bristol City player. Reds right-half Maurice Parry also played for Wales. 2014 – Daniel Sturridge scored the only goal of Roy Hodgson’s England’s friendly meeting with Denmark at Wembley. Mohamed Salah struck while winning his first cap as a Chelsea player in Egypt’s 2-0 friendly defeat of Bosnia-Herzegovina in Austria. Ex-red Raul Meireles netted as Portugal thumped Cameroon 5-1 in Leiria, while Gabriel Paletta made his senior debut for Italy as they lost 1-0 to Spain in Madrid. Sadio Mané struck his last goal as a Red Bull Salzburg player as Senegal drew 1-1 with Mali in a friendly in Dakar. Future red Andy Robertson also won his first cap in Scotland’s 1-0 win in Poland. Tom Ince won his first cap while on loan at Crystal Palace as England Under-21’s beat Wales 1-0 in a European Championships qualifier, with Nuri Şahin playing for Turkey for the final time as a Real Madrid player as Turkey beat Sweden 2-1 in Ankara. Mixed fortunes against the Owls We have twice faced The Wednesday in top-flight encounters on this day in history, with the home side winning 3-0 on each occasion. 1910 - We lost at Owlerton as Tom Brittleton netted twice, with Billy Lloyd also on target. Ian St. John gave us a half-time lead, but Royston Stephenson netted the final of his four goals against the reds. 1949 – We lost 2-1 at Chelsea despite going in at the break ahead through Jimmy Payne. Nando again 2009 - Fernando Torres was named the PFA Fans’ Player of the Month for February of that year, so becoming the third consecutive reds winner after two straight wins by Steven Gerrard. Nando had notched three times in three League outings during the previous month. International beginning and end 1989 - Ronnie Rosenthal netted his first goal for Israel as a Standard de Liège player, the only goal of their World Cup qualifier against New Zealand in Tel-Aviv. 2013 – Jordon Ibe won his second and last cap for England Under-18’s in their 1-0 friendly defeat in Belgium. On the move 1996 - Future red Steve Finnan joined Notts County on loan from Birmingham City. He played twenty times, before signing permanently seven months later. 2015 – Former reds left-winger Albert Riera re-signed for his first club Real Club Deportivo Mallorca, having been sacked by Udinese four months earlier. He played just six times in this second spell. 2024 - Bournemouth announced the departure of Richard Hughes as their Technical Director at the end of the season. He then joined the reds as Sporting Director.

Happy birthdays 1938 - Legendary centre-forward ‘Sir’ Roger Hunt was born in Golborne, Lancashire. He netted 285 times in 492 reds games after signing from Stockton Heath in July 1958. His 245 League goals remain a club record, and he has the distinction of being the first red to win the World Cup while at Anfield. His club medal haul includes two League championships, FA Cup, Second Division title and FA Charity Shield. 1966 - Hunt bagged both goals as England beat France 2-0 in a World Cup Finals group game at Wembley, on his 28th birthday. Clubmate Ian Callaghan also played, winning only his second cap. 1948 - Reserves keeper Frank Lane was born in Wallasey. He signed from Tranmere Rovers for £15,000 in September 1971, but only made two first-team appearances, deputising for Ray Clemence. Unfortunately, he distinguished himself for all the wrong reasons on his debut in September 1972 by safely catching a deep cross from Derby County’s Alan Hinton and then stepping backwards over his own goal-line, to help us on our way to a 2-1 defeat. New signings 2005 - Peter Crouch signed from Southampton for £7m on a four-year contract. He failed to score in his first nineteen reds games, but went on to bag thirteen goals in his final thirty games of his first season, helping us to claim the FA Cup in May. He went on to score 42 times in 134 outings in total before being sold to Portsmouth for a fee of up to £11m in July 2008. 2016 – Estonian centre-half Ragnar Klavan signed from Augsburg for £4.2m. He struck twice in 53 outings before moving on to Cagliari for £2m in August 2018. On the same day, keeper Ádám Bogdán joined Wigan Athletic on loan, playing seventeen times as the Latics were relegated to League One. Keeping no more 2007 - Jerzy Dudek signed for Real Madrid after 186 reds appearances, helping us to glory in Istanbul, as well as the Worthington Cup in 2003. He turned out just twelve times for the Spanish giants before retiring in May 2011. 2018 - Danny Ward was sold to Leicester City for £12.5m after just three senior reds games. He has so only played fourteen times in cup competitions for the Foxes across his first four campaigns. Heading off 2021 – Serbian midfielder Marko Grujić was sold to Porto for £10.5m after a successful loan spell. He had signed from Crvena Zvezda for £5.1m in January 2016, immediately being loaned back for the rest of the season. He struck once in sixteen senior reds appearances. On the same day, Nigerian forward moved on to Union Berlin for £6.5m. He had arrived from Imperial Academy for £400,000 in August 2015, spending most of his time out on loan. 2023 – Midfielder Dominic Corness joined Swiss Super League side Yverdon Sport on loan, making 21 senior appearances. 1900 - Inside-right David Wilson left the reds after just two senior appearances since arriving from East Bontas in May 1899. In comes Razor 1994 - Neil Ruddock signed from Tottenham Hotspur for £2.5m after just one season back at White Hart Lane. The burly centre-half made an inauspicious reds debut, breaking former red Peter Beardsley’s cheekbone in Ronnie Whelan’s testimonial match. He struck twelve times in 152 first-team appearances while at Anfield, before moving on to West Ham United in July 1998 for £100,000. Billy hitched 1946 – Billy Liddell married Phyllis at Island Road Methodist Church in Garston, just three days after Bob Paisley had got wed. Debuting in goal 2007 - Bulgarian keeper Nikolay Mihaylov made his first reds appearance in our 2-0 defeat of Auxerre in Switzerland. Our goals came from Steven Gerrard and Daniel Agger. Other recent friendlies 2016 – Keeper Shamal George made his first senior appearance, coming off the bench as an outfield player in our 2-0 win at Huddersfield Town. Philippe Coutinho had a penalty saved, with Marko Grujić on target and Alberto Moreno converting a second late spot-kick. 2015 – Danny Ings bagged his first reds goal as we beat Adelaide United 2-0 at the Adelaide Oval, with James Milner also on target. 2013 – We beat an Indonesia XI 2-0 in Jakarta to claim the Standard Chartered Trophy, with Philippe Coutinho and Raheem Sterling on target. 1997 - John Barnes was on the scoresheet as we drew 1-1 with Danish side Brøndby IF, with new goalkeeping signing Jørgen Nielsen playing his first reds game. 1999 - We beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-0 at Molineux, thanks to goals from Robbie Fowler and Karl-Heinz Riedle. Double trouble 2021 – We played two thirty-minute pre-season games in Salzburg, first drawing 1-1 with Wacker Innsbruck as left-back Owen Beck, centre-half Ben Davies and midfielders Kaide Gordon and Tyler Morton all appeared in the first team for the first time as Divock Origi scored from the spot. We then drew 1-1 with VfB Stuttgart as right-back Conor Bradley and centre-half Ibrahima Konaté played their first reds games, with Sadio Mané on target. Back amongst the big boys 2001 - We were drawn to play either Haka of Finland or Israeli side Maccabi Haifa in a two-legged Champions League qualifier, which would be our first ever games in the new format of the European Cup. Youngsters on target 2008 – András Simon scored as Hungary Under-19’s lost 2-1 to Germany in a European Championship Finals group game in the Czech Republic. On the same day, future red Daniel Sturridge scored his only Under-19’s goal while winning his third and last cap at this level, as England beat Greece 3-0 in the same competition, with future reds loanee Victor Moses also featuring. 1993 - Robbie Fowler struck as England Under-18’s beat the Netherlands 4-1 in a European Championship Finals group game in Walsall 1992 - Future red Nick Barmby was on the scoresheet as England thumped Poland 6-1 in Germany in the Quarter-final of the same competition. First and last caps 2003 - John Welsh won his fifteenth and last cap for England Under-19’s as they lost 3-0 to the Czech Republic in a European Championship Finals group game in Liechtenstein. Future red Alberto Aquilani played in Italy’s 5-1 thumping of the host nation in the same competition in Balzers to qualify for the Semi-finals. 1997 - Øyvind Leonhardsen won his first senior cap as a reds player as Norway won a friendly 1-0 in Iceland, with Stig Inge Bjørnebye also featuring. On the same day, future red Vegard Heggem played for Norway Under-21’s as they lost 2-0 in Iceland. Other internationals 2018 – Adam Lewis featured as England Under-19’s drew 1-1 with Ukraine in a European Championships Finals group game in Finland. On the same day, ex-red Bernard Diomède took charge of France as they thumped Turkey 5-0 in the same competition. 2012 – Craig Bellamy and future reds Joe Allen and Steven Caulker all featured as the Great Britain Olympic XI lost 2-0 to the Brazil Olympic XI in a friendly at the Riverside Stadium. 1995 - Future red Brad Friedel played as the USA lost their Copa América Semi-final with Brazil 1-0 in Uruguay, with future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel on the winning side. Signing on 1995 - Young forward Paul Dalglish signed for Celtic Juniors. This was the first club for King Kenny’s son. He came to Anfield a year later, but only lasted just over a year, before moving to Newcastle United on a free transfer. 2020 – Forward Layton Stewart signed a new contract with the reds. The Liverpool-born lad had been at the Academy since the age of seven, making it onto the first-team bench for the first time in our League Cup Quarter-final at Aston Villa in December 2019. On the same day, Suso was sold to Sevilla from AC Milan for €24m after a successful loan spell.

He’s red, he’s white 2000 - Nick Barmby signed from Everton for £6m, prompting an unprecedented tide of bitterness from across Stanley Park. He became the first player to switch directly from Everton to Liverpool since Dave Hickson in November 1959. Barmby netted eight times in 58 reds games, moving on to Leeds United for £2.75m in August 2002. Red departures 2017 – Brazilian midfielder Lucas Leiva was sold to S.S. Lazio for £5m. He made 346 senior appearances after signing from Grêmio for a reported £5m in May 2007, notching just seven times. 1992 - Barry Venison was sold to Newcastle United for £250,000. He had struck three times in 158 appearances for the reds since arriving from Sunderland for £200,000 in August 1986, winning two League titles and an FA Cup in his time at Anfield. 2008 – Keeper Scott Carson was sold to West Bromwich Albion for £3.25m, after seasons on loan at first Charlton Athletic and then Aston Villa. He turned out on 118 occasions for the Midlands outfit before joining Turkish side Bursaspor in July 2011. He had made just nine senior reds appearances following his arrival from Leeds United for £750,000 in January 2005, only keeping two clean sheets. Happy birthday Ray 1922 - Welsh international full-back Ray Lambert was born in Bagillt, Flintshire. He joined the reds when he was just thirteen and went on to make 341 first-team appearances, netting just twice, including being part of the 1947 title-winning side. Other birthdays 1905 - Outside-right Billy Hartill was born. He only made four senior appearances in early 1936, after signing from Everton that January, moving on to Bristol Rovers just two months later. He had previously been a prolific marksman with hometown club Wolverhampton Wanderers, bagging 164 goals in 221 League games. 1895 - Mid-1920’s reserves full-back James Garner was born in Manchester. He only played five times for the reds and went on to make 26 League appearances for Southport. Writing history 2002 - It was announced that a new weekly magazine called LFC would be launched the following month, the first official weekly magazine dedicated to a single Premiership club. Rick Parry said, “We feel our fans are ready for the new weekly ‘LFC’ magazine which will give them a real insight into life at Anfield and Melwood.” It was eventually replaced by a monthly publication after 513 issues. Youngsters on their way out 2006 - French centre-back Carl Medjani signed for Lorient permanently, having previously spent a season on loan there. He made only nine League appearances to add to the 25 from his first spell at Stade Le Moustoir, before joining AJ Ajaccio. 2011 – Argentine midfielder Gerardo Bruna was sold to Blackpool, having helped the reserves to claim the League at the end of his first season in 2008. He made just four substitute appearances for the Tangerines before moving to S.D. Huesca in September 2013. Adam’s day 2008 – Reserves winger Adam Hammill signed a new contract until 2011, also joining Blackpool on loan on the same day. He struck once in 23 outings for the Seasiders, and later spent time with fellow Championship side Barnsley that season, moving permanently to Oakwell in August 2009. God for England 1993 - Robbie Fowler netted for England Under-18’s as they beat France 2-0 in a European Championship Finals group game in Stoke. On the same day, future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel played for Brazil as they held Ecuador to a goalless draw in a World Cup qualifier in Guayaquil. 1987 – Future red Stig Inge Bjørnebye scored his first goal for Norway Under-19’s as they beat Denmark 3-0 in a tournament game in Slagelse. Taking the step up 2006 - Right-back Stephen Darby, central midfielder Ryan Flynn, striker Craig Lindfield, goalkeeper David Roberts and left-back Robbie Threlfall all moved from the Academy to Melwood. All have since left the club, with Darby the only one to make the first team, on just six occasions. 2011 - Coach Steve Cooper was named Academy Manager, a role he held until joining the FA two years later. Also on the move 1939 – Ex-reds centre-half Tom ‘Tiny’ Bradshaw joined South Liverpool from Third Lanark. He struck four times in 291 reds appearances after signing from Bury for £8,000 in January 1930. He returned to his native land in September 1938, joining Third Lanark. 1985 - Future red Paul Ince signed as a professional for West Ham United. He netted twelve times in 95 games for the Hammers, before joining Manchester United for £1m in September 1989. 2009 – Future reds loanee left-back Aly Cissokho joined Olympique Lyonnais from Porto for €15m, after 23 games for the Portuguese side. 2012 – Ex-reserves forward Krisztián Németh signed for Roda JC Kerkrade, scoring ten in 45 Eredivisie games before leaving in July 2014. 2023 – Colombian defender Anderson Arroyo joined Andorra on loan, playing eleven times. Youngsters in Euro action 2003 - John Welsh played as England Under-19’s beat France 2-0 in a European Championship Finals group encounter in Liechtenstein. Meanwhile, future red Alberto Aquilani represented Italy in the same competition in their 1-1 draw with Portugal. 2004 – Arnaud Bühler appeared for Switzerland in their goalless draw with Ukraine in the same tournament. 2005 - Keeper Paul Willis played for Northern Ireland Under-19’s as they lost 1-0 to Greece in the same competition at Windsor Park, with future reds custodian featuring in England’s 1-1 draw with France. 2006 - Antonio Barragán played as Spain beat Turkey 5-3 in a group game in Poland. 2007 - Future red Damien Plessis was sent off as France Under 19’s were held to a 1-1 draw by Germany in the same competition in Austria. Future red Mikel San José also featured on the same day as Spain and Portugal also drew 1-1 in the same tournament. 2010 – Future red Thiago Alcântara netted for Spain Under-19’s as they beat Croatia 2-1 in the European Championships Finals in France, with Dani Pacheco also playing. Chris Mavinga played in France’s 4-1 defeat of the Netherlands, while future reds Steven Caulker and Nathaniel Clyne played as England beat Austria 3-2 in the same competition. On the same day, future red Fabio Borini featured as Italy lost 2-0 to Portugal. 2016 – Sheyi Ojo played for England Under-19’s in their 2-1 defeat of Croatia in a group-stage game in Germany. Also in international action 1925 - Reds forward James Walsh played for an England side as they beat Australia 5-0 in an FA Tour game in Sydney. 1995 – Future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel appeared for Brazil as they drew 2-2 with Argentina in the Copa América Quarter-final in Uruguay, before winning a penalty shoot-out.

Robbie’s last strikes 2007 - Robbie Fowler bagged his last two reds goals, converting two first-half penalties in front of the Kop in our 4-0 thumping of Sheffield United at Anfield to take his reds tally to 183 in total. Javier Mascherano made his debut, while we reached a new club record of nine consecutive clean sheets at Anfield in the League. Sami Hyypiä and Steven Gerrard added goals in the second half, while Peter Crouch suffered a broken nose after being kicked in the face. 1923 - We also entertained the Blades, with Harry Chambers grabbing our goal as we lost an FA Cup Third Round tie 2-1. Billy Gillespie scored one of his seven goals against the reds, with Jimmy Waugh also netting. New signings 1998 – Steven Gerrard signed his first professional contract at the age of seventeen. He went on to net 186 times in 710 reds games, helping us to claim the European Cup, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups, two UEFA Super Cups and three League Cups as well as winning the PFA and Football Writers’ Player of the Year awards once apiece. On the same day, future red Bolo Zenden played for the Netherlands in their 3-2 friendly defeat of Mexico in Miami. 1987 - Nigel Spackman signed from Chelsea for £400,000. He made 63 first-team appearances, winning a League title medal in his one full season at Anfield. He moved on to Queens Park Rangers for £500,000 in February 1989. 1937 – Scottish forward Alexander Smith signed from Buckie Thistle for £150, but only played once for the reds. 1902 – Outside-right Arthur Goddard signed from Glossop for £460. He grabbed 77 goals in 414 reds games, helping us to Second Division and League championships. He was nominated into the club’s official Hall Of Fame, for the 1910-20 era. Carra’s new record 2011 – Jamie Carragher played his 137th European game for the club, a new British record, as we beat Sparta Praha 1-0 at Anfield in the second leg of our UEFA Europa League round of 32 encounter. Dirk Kuyt headed in the only goal of the tie late on Red centurions 1951 - Forward Jack Balmer played his 300th reds game in our 3-2 First Division win at Stoke City as we came back from two goals down. Cyril Done, Bill Jones and Billy Liddell struck our goals in what was our 2,000th first-class fixture. Les Johnston bagged a brace for the Potters. 1976 - We lost at Highbury in what was our hundredth First Division encounter with Arsenal, including sixteen when they were known as Woolwich Arsenal. Sir Roger’s fifth treble 1962 - Roger Hunt netted his fifth hat-trick of the season in a 5-1 Second Division win over Middlesbrough at Anfield. Ian St. John bagged the other two. Most recently 2020 – We beat West Ham United 3-2 at Anfield to equal the English top-flight record of eighteen successive wins, with Gini Wijnaldum nodding us in front early on. However, we fell behind to an Issa Diop header and Pablo Fornals strike before we eventually triumphed through Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané to restore our 22-point lead at the top of the table. Reds debutants 1912 - Centre-forward Tommy Gracie scored on his reds debut in a 2-2 draw at Bury, with Jimmy Stewart also on target, while half-back John McConnell made his 53rd and final reds appearance amd winger Harold Uren played for the 45th and last time. 1954 - Full-back Tom McNulty made his reds bow as we drew 1-1 at Sheffield Wednesday, with Eric Anderson on target late on and Dennis Woodhead bagging one of his four goals against the reds. Rare goals 2018 – Emre Can headed in his fourteenth and last reds goal, our hundredth of the season to date, opening the scoring as we beat West Ham United 4-1 at Anfield. Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino scored after the break, with Michail Antonio pulling a goal back, one of his six past us to date, before Sadio Mané added another goal. Salah and Mané both also struck the woodwork while Dejan Lovren reached a century of League games for the reds. 1996 - Stan Collymore bagged a brace, with Michael Thomas netting his only goal of the season to give us a 3-2 League win at Blackburn Rovers. Stan’s first goal came from a tamely struck shot that was heading straight into the arms of Tim Flowers until it unexpectedly struck a divot and bounced into the net! Cue 5,000 travelling Kopites singing ‘England’s number one’ to the rueful keeper. Jason Wilcox struck one of his four goals against the reds, with Tim Sherwood also scoring as Rob Jones played his 200th game for the club. Happy birthdays 1878 - Inside-left Andy McGuigan was born in Newton Stewart, Wigtownshire. He signed from Hibernian in May 1900 and bagged fourteen goals in 37 reds games, including five against Stoke at Anfield in January 1902, as he became the first red ever to score so many in one game. He was part of our first League title-winning side in 1901, before joining Middlesbrough the following year. He later returned to Anfield as a scout and was a club director as we won back-to-back titles in 1922 and 1923. 2001 - Midfielder Luis Longstaff was born in Darlington. He joined the reds from Newcastle United in 2015, making his senior debut in our League Cup defeat at Aston Villa in December 2019, although he was released in June 2022. On the same day, future red Ragnar Klavan played for Estonia Under-17’s. Four for Fagan 1940 - Willie Fagan netted four goals, including a penalty, as we won 8-3 at Port Vale in a Wartime League fixture. He only remained in charge for nine months on this occasion before being sacked, allegedly for criticising his players in public. Birthdays galore 1954 - Midfielder Jimmy Case was born in Liverpool. He signed from South Liverpool for a bargain £500 in May 1973 and bagged 46 goals in 269 reds games, helping us to claim three European Cups, four League titles, UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, League Cup and three FA Charity Shields, before joining Brighton & Hove Albion for £350,000 in August 1981. 1863 - Matt McQueen was born in Harthill, Lanarkshire. He arrived from Leith Athletic in October 1892 and bagged seven goals in 103 games for the reds, playing in every position on the park including 41 games in goal, helping us to claim the Second Division title twice, once while as a keeper. He moved on to Heart Of Midlothian in 1899 but later served the reds as a Director, and then as Manager for five years in the 1920’s, leading us to our fourth League title in 1923. 1958 - Howard Gayle was born in Toxteth. The first black player to represent Liverpool in modern times, he signed professional terms in November 1977 and notched once in five first-team appearances before moving on to Birmingham City in January 1983 for £75,000. 2013 – Under-23’s Assistant Coach Gary O’Neil was born in Beckenham. He had enjoyed a successful playing career with the likes of Portsmouth and Middlesbrough, retiring in the summer of 2019. He joined the reds in August 2020, leaving the following February to take over as Senior First Team Coach at Bournemouth. Two keepers also share a birthday today. 1971 - Brad Friedel was born in Bay Village, Ohio. He made 31 first-team appearances for us after signing from US side Columbus Crew for £1m in December 1997, moving to Blackburn Rovers on a free transfer in November 2000. 1973 - Pegguy Arphexad was born in Guadeloupe. Our former reserve custodian signed on a free transfer in July 2000 but only played six senior reds games, although he claimed six winners’ medals from the bench in his time at Anfield, before moving on to Coventry City in August 2003 after his contract had expired. The Saint departs 1971 - Ian St. John signed for Coventry City after a spell with Hellenic in South Africa. He had notched 118 goals in 425 games for the reds, including the winning goal in the 1965 FA Cup Final. He had also helped us to win two First Division titles, the Second Division and FA Charity Shield since his arrival from Motherwell in May 1961 for a then club record fee of £37,500. Euro disappointment 2016 – Daniel Sturridge gave us a half-time lead in the UEFA Europa League Final against Sevilla in Basel, but we collapsed after the break to lose 3-1 with Jorge Moreno bagging a brace to add to a Kévin Gameiro strike. Midfielder Joe Allen, centre-forward Christian Benteke and centre-half Kolo Touré all played their last reds games. We had been denied a clear-cut penalty in the first half as the Spanish side went on to claim the trophy for the third consecutive season. More forward departures 2004 - Emile Heskey was sold to Birmingham City for a fee rising to £6.25m after sixty goals in 223 reds games. He struck sixteen times in 78 games for the Blues before moving to Wigan Athletic for £5.5m in July 2006. 1971 - Steve Peplow left for Swindon Town after a successful loan spell. He signed on at Anfield as a professional in January 1966 and struck nineteen goals for the reserves in 1968/69, but only played three senior games, without finding the back of the net. Other reds signings 1927 - Forward Tom Devlin signed from Preston North End for £250. He was unable to make the first-team, unlike his brother, centre-forward Willie, who was at Anfield at the same time. He moved on to Swindon Town in July 1928. 1985 - Reserves defender Alex Watson signed for the reds as a professional. He only made nine first-team appearances, including our 1988 FA Charity Shield win, before joining Bournemouth in January 1991 for £150,000. The end of the road for A’Court 1963 - Alan A’Court played his 354th and final League game as we lost 2-0 at Aston Villa in a game postponed from Boxing Day to finish the season in eighth place with George Graham netting the first of his four goals past us and Bobby Thomson also on target. He had played 381 games for us in total, scoring 63 goals, helping us to win the Second Division title in 1962. 1982 - Our only other first-class game on this day produced a goalless draw at Middlesbrough, the final game of a season in which we won the League by four points from Ipswich Town. First and last caps 1935 - Ex-reds defender Tom Gardner won his second and final cap as England beat the Netherlands 1-0 in a friendly in Amsterdam. 1938 – Ex-reds reserves centre-half Matt O’Mahoney won the first of his six caps for Ireland in their 2-2 friendly draw with Czechoslovakia in Prague. 1939 – O’Mahoney played again as Ireland again drew 2-2 in a friendly, this time with Hungary in Budapest. 1950 - Bill Jones made his second and final senior appearance for England as they beat Belgium 4-1 in a friendly in Brussels. His grandson Rob went on to win eight full caps for England. 1949 - Bill also played for his country, when England B beat the Netherlands 4-0 in an unofficial international in Amsterdam. 2002 - Future red Djibril Cissé made his senior international debut as a substitute in France’s 2-1 defeat by Belgium at the Stade de France. On the same day, Vladimír Šmicer scored the only goal of the game as the Czech Republic beat World Cup-bound Italy in Prague, his twentieth senior goal for his country.
