The mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson, has called for an “army of volunteers” to assist vulnerable and elderly people across the city during the coronavirus pandemic, Gregory Robinson reports for the Guardian.

Anderson will be setting up two city council specialist hotlines to coordinate the effort. He hopes volunteers will be able to help deliver food and medical supplies.

One of the hotlines will be used to recruit volunteers who are able to offer assistance to vulnerable people. The other number will allow those in need to contact the council for help with services like delivering food, supplies and medicine. The council will then work alongside volunteer groups and charities to distribute the supplies. This number will also aim to give those who feel isolated someone to contact.

The mayor hopes to launch the two hotlines today.

The plans for a hotline to help those who may not be able to support themselves in the event of isolation comes after the health secretary Matt Hancock warned that people over the age of 70 may be asked to self-isolate for up to four months as part of the government’s action plan against the pandemic.

Last week the mayor launched dedicated social media pages to give the city’s residents the latest news and guidance in response to the coronavirus pandemic. In a statement seen by the Liverpool Echo, the mayor wrote:

 

Co-ordinating a response that helps with clear messages about what we can do is essential and also leading and uniting volunteers and groups to work alongside us is what we should be setting out to achieve.

Was up in London over the weekend and saw no noticeable difference, apart from less traffic maybe. Everywhere we went was busy and we saw about 6 people in total wearing masks.

I went in my local yesterday and ordered a Corona and used the sanitiser gel that was on the bar

there is a market stall in town near St Johns shopping centre and a guy is selling tiny bottles of the anti bac stuff for £4 a pop.. they are probably 70p RRP. He also has disinfectant sprays going for daft money too.

One of my shows is about to be shut down, I think. We've done a lot of due-diligence on filming with a reduced crew/audience, but I think the channel are going to order us to step everyone down until further notice. My team is almost all freelance - we can up their notice period to two weeks from one, but it doesn't feel like nearly enough - god knows when we can resume.

I'm in a weird place of being totally freaked out by all this and sort of hopeful/confident it won't get as bad as some are suggesting.

There’s a HSE phone number to call if you have symptoms, 1850 24 1850. My understanding is that they’ll send someone out to test them. This is evolving quickly though, extended testing process expected to be announced soon. Don’t think there is any cost involved.

Schools already closed in the Republic of Ireland. Closure announced last Thursday.

My bro has made contact with his GP and following a phone consultation is awaiting a call back as to whether he should be tested. He's feeling ok on the whole.

My Da is ok. A cold, but when I spoke to him his exact words were 'You gave me this fecking cold when you were here last November. You. YOU! You're after me money and me fishing rods!'.

Obviously, I denied this.

That's very well put. Same as me I think. Hoping we look back at this with a wry smile and chuckle at the necessary overreaction. But it's wild. It's like a weird dream. 

Sounds sad maybe but hearing they're not just gonna rip the title away from us would do my mental health the world of good.

Fella in work's local pub landlord got it. He thought he was having a heart attack. Pains in chest and pins and needles in his arm.

Now has to contact everyone who's been in the pub the past fortnight. Most aul lads. 

I tried to call the GP today as I had mild cold symptoms but understandably I couldn't get through. The cough is pretty much gone. Apart from when I think about it, then like a d****ead I cough. Gone back into the living room but keeping a distance from wife and baby. 

Might watch an episode of Dawson's Creek.

Yeah, that's what I had - it was like that feeling when you've done too much exercise and you get out of breath and it kinda burns a little.

 

On a side note, I work for local government and they have a FAQ page which hasn't been updated for nearly 3 weeks and links to advice from the middle of January

Problem is that the staff in the stores don't follow the guidelines and the customers have more than one option. Just this week I've seen staff say "you can only have two boxes or paracetomol but if you're buying four I'll put the other two through as a separate transaction for you".  And then there is always the option of going to the staffed check-out with one item and doing the self-check-out for the other.

I saw some social media lynching of a Post Office in Brum (I think, I didn't pay it that much attention) for selling hand sanitiser for £20 a bottle. 

You have to remember, though, as well as the gouging at the retailer, they're being gouged by their suppliers, with some of them robbing the stuff and selling worse. Loads of it will be fake by now too.

I tried to buy some isopropyl (I have some packing tape residue that I need to clean) the other day and price of that has gone through the roof. As has meths and white spirit.
