Totally, I just think if we're going to reset the midfield and full backs and maintain some depth, we're going to need to spend some serious cash.

I'm taking you all down with me.

I see the problems as follows: 1. Midfield is totally unbalanced and needs overhauling with at least two signings. This is complicated by the uncertainty over Mac Allister’s contract. We will need to sell at least one player to bring in starting midfielders, I think that player should be Wirtz, but we desperately need more physicality in there. 2. The fullbacks. Even though Kerkez has improved, from a very low bar, neither he or Frimpong are anywhere near the standard we require. Too small, too skittish, they both contribute very little and are objectively, not good footballers. Bradley is decent but constantly injured and I think it’s fanciful to think he can come back and be a long term solution at rb. The back ups we have are Araujo, who is doing a decent job there, but is a centre back, Gomez who is always injured and will likely leave this summer and Tsimikas who is crap and also out of contract. 3. Virg’s contract. Jacquet has been the one positive so far this season, but who partners him next season if we let Virg go? Leoni might be good enough but we don’t know what sort of player we’re getting back from injury. Do we make the Araujo deal permanent? If so that’s £50m we’re not using for midfield. 4. Ali’s contract. If we let him go, what’s the succession plan? We have Marmadashvilli, who doesn’t look up to it and may well be sold. Woodman who is not a starter, Jaros coming back from a serious injury and this new Belgian kid who is very young and an unknown quantity. The forward line is probably the least of our worries, but there are some issues there - will Hugo come back the same player? Can Barcola and Isak become the pressing monsters we need them to be? Can Rio step up more consistently? The massive irony of all this is that Gakpo is suddenly our safest bet. Anyway, to your earlier point, we might well be a couple of players away from a good starting 11 but the squad as a whole is a mess. We’ve massively overspent in some areas and underspent in others and it’s springing leaks all over the place. I think it’s going to take a few seasons to fix. Hopefully Iraola is up to the job, but I think we’re going to look back at the Richard Hughes era as one of the worst mistakes FSG have made.

Aside from the grim wider context of today’s game, I’m concerned about how much of a job Iraola has on his hands. The squad is such a mess, I’m worried it’s going to take years to fix.

I’m not dwelling on whether they’ve been caught, they have been caught and found guilty, but now we’re left with three months of utterly pointless sporting competition, it’s farcical.

Totally, it’s untenable. Sporting integrity completely undermined.

I’d be dropping him for Dom. Keep Macca and Grav/Neyoni in midfield.

There are more worrying forces at play than us just being sh*te. The whole enterprise feels pointless at the moment.
