Happy birthday Uncle Roy 1948 - Roy Evans was born in Bootle. One of the club’s greatest servants, he served as fan, left-back, reserves coach, Assistant Manager and then finally the top job for four years. He only made eleven first team appearances before injury cut his career short, but his time as reserves boss was incredibly successful, leading them to eleven Central League titles, including seven in nine seasons. However, his time as the main man was less glittering, as he could only claim one Coca Cola Cup. 1963 - Ronnie Rosenthal was born in Haifa. The Israeli forward made an instant impact on his arrival on loan in March 1990, with Kenny Dalglish saying, “Ronnie gave us the momentum. It was that which helped us to win the Championship.” He signed from Standard de Liège permanently that June for £1m and scored a total of 22 times in 97 reds games before joining Tottenham Hotspur for £250,000 after four years at Anfield. 1927 - Wing-half Bryan Williams was born in Liverpool. He netted five times in 34 reds games after arriving from South Liverpool at the end of the Second World War, moving on to Crewe Alexandra in May 1954, where he became a regular. 2001 – Midfielder Matteo Ritaccio was born in New York. He arrived at the Academy in August 2018, signing as a professional fifteen months later. However, he was released in January 2024. Farewell Brendan 2015 – We were held to a 1-1 draw at Goodison Park, with boss Brendan Rodgers getting the sack later that same day. Danny Ings headed us into the lead but Romelu Lukaku equalised just four minutes later, on the stroke of half time, the most recent of his five strikes past us to date. Rodgers had led us to 85 victories in his 166 games in charge, failing to win any silverware but guiding us to within a whisker of claiming the League title in 2013/14. A big day for Jones 1991 - Full-back Rob Jones signed from Crewe Alexandra for £300,000. The grandson of post-war utility man Bill made his reds bow just two days later, going on to play 243 times for the reds, before injury ended his career, famously failing to ever find the net in his time at Anfield. 1995 – He was sent off in our League Cup Second Round second leg at Sunderland after a rash tackle on Michael Gray. The home side’s Martin Smith was also dismissed after retaliating. Robbie Fowler bagged the only goal of the game to send us through 3-0 on aggregate. We wore the curious kit of gold shirts and green shorts to avoid a colour clash. Off the mark 2014 – Adam Lallana bagged his first reds strike to open the scoring on the stroke of half time as we beat West Bromwich Albion 2-1 at Anfield. Saido Berahino equalised from the spot after the break, but Jordan Henderson struck the winner. Red centurions 2022 – James Milner played his 300th reds game, and fiftieth for the reds in the UEDA Champions League, with Trent Alexander-Arnold also reaching that milestone in the competition as we beat Rangers 2-0 in a group game at Anfield. Trent opened the scoring from a free-kick, with Mohamed Salah converting a second-half penalty after Luis Díaz was fouled. Ouch 1998 - Pierluigi Casiraghi netted his only Chelsea strike. Phil Babb attempted to prevent the goal but only succeeded in wrapping his legs around a post at the Anfield Road end, causing grown men around the ground to wince in sympathy, and he was taken off shortly after. Jamie Redknapp equalised for the reds late on. 2009 – We lost 2-0 at Stamford Bridge, thanks to the last of Nicolas Anelka’s five strikes against the reds and a Florent Malouda goal. Italian despair 2012 – Jonjo Shelvey headed us in front against Udinese in a UEFA Europa League group game at Anfield, but the Italian side went 3-1 ahead thanks to Antonio Di Natale, a Sebastián Coates own goal and Giovanni Pasquale. Luis Suárez scored a late free-kick, but we still lost 3-2. Trebles for 1989 - Steve Staunton bagged a hat-trick as we beat Wigan Athletic 3-0 in an away League Cup tie that was switched to Anfield. He had come on in the second half as an emergency forward substitute after Ian Rush had limped off. 1941 - Cyril Done netted a treble in our 5-5 Wartime League draw at New Brighton, his third in consecutive games. Dicky Dorsett grabbed the other two. Out-gunned 2003 - We lost 2-1 at home to Arsenal, with Harry Kewell netting after a quarter of an hour, and Michael Owen suffering a shin injury. Sami Hyypiä unfortunately scored an own goal in his last game as official club captain, with Robert Pires bagging one of his four goals past us as the Gunners won for the 21st time at Anfield in the League, with only Everton responsible for us missing out on all the points more often. 1977 - We also faced the Gunners, holding them to a goalless draw at Highbury. Howard makes his way 1980 - Howard Gayle made his reds bow as a substitute for David Fairclough in a 3-0 win at Manchester City. Our goals came from Kenny Dalglish, Graeme Souness and Sammy Lee. Hat-tricks against 2020 – Ollie Watkins bagged a first-half treble as we lost 7-2 at Aston Villa behind closed doors, the first of his five goals against the reds to date. Mohamed Salah and Jack Grealish each struck twice, with these being the first of Grealish’s four goals past us so far, with John McGinn and ex-Blue Ross Barkley also on target. This was the first time we had conceded seven goals since April 1963 when we lost by the same score at Tottenham Hotspur. 1919 - Billy Hibbert scored a hat-trick for Newcastle United as they beat us 3-0 at St. James’ Park, the last of his thirteen goals past us. Outside-right Harold Wadsworth made his debut in this game while inside-right Fred Pagnam featured for the 39th and final time. Duncan off 1895 – Scottish left-back Duncan McLean was sold to St. Bernard's. He made his reds bow in our very first game having remained when Everton departed Anfield. He bagged four goals in 82 games, helping us to the Second Division title before returning north of the border to join Edinburgh St. Bernard’s in October 1895, with whom he won two full international caps. Happier days against the Geordies Our three other League meetings with Newcastle United on this day in history have all resulted in victories. 1961 - Kevin Lewis and Roger Hunt struck as we won 2-0 at Anfield, our twelfth straight game unbeaten since the start of this promotion season. 1952 - Jack Smith netted a brace as we won 5-3. Shanks thumps the reds 1958 - Bill Shankly’s Huddersfield Town trounced us 5-0 at Leeds Road in a Second Division fixture. Alan A’Court made his 200th reds appearance in this game. Derek Hawksworth struck a brace, with Les Massie scoring one of his four goals against the reds, and Ken Taylor and Ramon Wilson also on the scoresheet. A derby win 1924 - Archie Rawlings struck the only goal of the game at Goodison Park after just three minutes. A fair old win 1967 - Ron Yeats and Roger Hunt were on target as we beat Swedish side Malmö FF 2-1 at Anfield in a Fairs Cup First Round match to progress 4-1 on aggregate. Dag Szepanski bagged a late consolation for the visitors. Mixed fortunes against the Owls 1902 - We beat The Wednesday 4-2 at Anfield thanks to a Sam Raybould brace, including a penalty, and goals from George Livingstone and Arthur Goddard. Harry Chapman scored one of his six goals past us, with Fred Spiksley nabbing the last of his four. Keeper Bill Perkins reached a century of League games for the reds. 1913 - We visited Owlerton in another top-flight encounter, with full-back Bob Crawford bagging our consolation from the spot as we were thumped 4-1. This was his only goal in 115 reds games, while outside-right Fred Staniforth was making the first of just three reds appearances while inside-right Jimmy Stewart appeared for the 63rd and final time. Sam Kirkman bagged one of his four goals against us, with Andre Wilson, George Robertson and Jack Burkinshaw all also netting. Internationals on target 1998 - Future red Milan Baroš netted for the Czech Republic Under-18’s in their 2-1 European Championships qualifying win in Armenia. 2001 - Future red El-Hadji Diouf struck as Senegal beat Japan 2-0 in a friendly on his home ground in Lens. Salif Diao also featured. On the same day, future reds coach Gary O’Neil played for England Under-19’s as they lost 1-0 to Russia in a friendly in Barnsley. 1947 – Future reds forward Sammy Smyth bagged a brace as Ireland beat Scotland 2-0 in the British International Championships at Windsor Park, with Billy Liddell on the losing side. Bosses against each other 1941 - Future reds boss Don Welsh netted as England beat Scotland 2-0 in a Wartime International at Wembley. Bill Shankly was on the losing side. Sami on home soil 1995 - Sami Hyypiä won his seventh cap for Finland, his first on home soil, as Turkey held them to a goalless friendly draw in Helsinki. It was his final cap as a Myllykosken Pallo-47 player, before he joined Willem II in the Netherlands. For Don 1951 - We took part in a testimonial match for Rhyl Athletic centre-forward Don Spendlove, with the reds winning 3-0 at Belle Vue. Jack Balmer struck twice with John Heydon also netting. Durnin for the reds 2006 - Liverpool and Celtic drew a charity legends match at Celtic Park 2-2, with the reds’ goals coming from John Durnin and Steve McManaman. On the same day, young Danish centre-back Daniel Agger was named as the PFA Fans Player of the Month for September. On the move 2006 - David Hodgson was sacked as Manager of Darlington after 51 victories in his 144 games in charge of this third spell with the Quakers. On the same day, Paul Ince’s playing contract with Swindon Town was cancelled by mutual consent, although he remained on the coaching staff for a few more weeks before taking over as Manager at Macclesfield Town. 2012 - Richard Money was appointed Cambridge United boss. He was sacked in November 2015, having guided them to the FA Trophy and promotion back into the Football League. 2013 – Ex-reds reserves forward Nathan Eccleston joined Carlisle United on loan from Blackpool, playing three times without scoring. 2022 – Right-back Josh Davidson signed pro terms with the reds, having been at the Academy since the age of six. Song at last 2000 - Rigobert Song skippered Cameroon, winning his final cap as a reds player and being booked as they drew a friendly with France 1-1 at the Stade de France. This was his 49th cap to date. Sad day 2010 – Joe Fagan’s widow Lil died at a nursing home in Lincolnshire, aged 92. 2016 – Welsh left-winger Mervyn Jones died. He was one of the smallest players to ever play for the club at just five feet four inches. He signed from Bangor City in November 1951, moving on to Southampton in July 1953 after just five reds outings. Other reds games 1986 – We beat Wimbledon 3-1 at Plough Lane. Ian Rush struck twice with Jan Mølby also netting, with all the goals coming in the second half. 1975 – Brian Hall and Jimmy Case struck as we beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-0 at Anfield. The visitors’ coach broke down on the M62, meaning they arrived at the ground less than half an hour before kick-off. 1969 – Nottingham Forest held us to a 1-1 draw in L4 as we benefitted from a Bob Chapman own goal. 1947 – We lost 3-1 at Middlesbrough with Jack Balmer scoring our goal. Mickey Fenton netted two of his nine goals past us, with Johnny Spuhler also on the scoresheet. Joe honoured 2011 – Future reds midfielder Joe Allen was named Young Player of the Year for 2010/11 at the FAW Awards. Also in international action 2015 – Ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper took charge of England Under-17’s as they drew a European Championships qualifier 1-1 in Portugal, with young red Adam Lewis featuring. 2017 - Bernard Diomède took charge of France Under-19’s as they beat Scotland 1-0 in a friendly.

Happy birthday Vlad 1973 - Vladimír Šmicer was born in Verneřice, Děčín in Czechoslovakia. He made 184 reds appearances following his £3.75m transfer from Racing Club de Lens, scoring nineteen times, including a crucial strike in Istanbul. He signed for us on his 26th birthday, although he did not officially become a Liverpool player until 1st July 1999, and left for Girondins de Bordeaux in June 2005, having helped us to claim the Champions League, UEFA Cup, FA Cup and two League Cups. 1965 - Nicky Tanner was born in Bristol. He signed from Bristol Rovers for £20,000 in August 1988 and made a total of 59 appearances for the reds under Graeme Souness, netting his only goal at Goodison Park in December 1991. Sami’s farewell 2009 - We beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 at Anfield in our final game of the season, with Xabi Alonso playing his 210th and final reds game and Sami Hyypiä making an emotional farewell after his 464th and last appearance for the club. Fernando Torres headed in the opener with his fiftieth reds goal, in just his 84th game. We extended our lead after Alan Hutton deflected in a Dirk Kuyt effort to register our 150th own goal, before ex-red Robbie Keane reduced the deficit with the most recent of his five goals past us. Yossi Benayoun rounded off the scoring before Sami made his entrance. Stepping down 2004 - Gérard Houllier stepped down as reds boss. He had been in sole charge since November 1998, leading us to the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, two League Cups, UEFA Super Cup and FA Charity Shield. He said, “I'd rather have stayed as manager but I leave on good terms with everybody. I may have left Liverpool, but Liverpool will not leave me.” 2023 – Australian keeper Brad Jones announced his retirement from playing. He joined the from Middlesbrough for £2.3m in August 2010, making 27 senior appearances before being released in June 2015. On the same day, ex-red Pepe Reina played his thousandth professional game as Villarreal beat Cádiz 2-0. Crushed 2015 - We were humbled 6-1 in the final game of the season at Stoke City. Mame Biram Diouf bagged a brace before Jon Walters grabbed one of his seven goals past us. Ex-red Charlie Adam and Steven N’Zonzi then put the home side five up at the break. Steven Gerrard netted his 186th and last goal in his 710th and final reds game, but ex-red Peter Crouch then added his fourth and last goal against the reds. This was our biggest defeat since April 1963. Appointments galore 2011 – A raft of appointments at the club were announced, including Frank McParland as Director of Academy and Player Development, Pep Segura as Technical Director, Stuart Webber as Director of Recruitment, and Steve Cooper as Under-16’s Coach and Academy Manager. Rodolfo Borrell stepped up from Under-18’s Coach to Reserve Team Head Coach, with Mike Marsh taking over the Under-18’s. On the same day, Lucas Leiva was presented with the Standard Chartered Liverpool FC Player of the Season for 2010-11 award. En route to title number five 1947 - Our only other first-class game on this day to date brought a 2-1 victory at Arsenal in our penultimate game of the season, taking us back to the top of the table, despite being behind with only a quarter of an hour to go. Emlyn for the last time 1980 - Ex-red Emlyn Hughes won his 62nd and final cap for England, coming off the bench as they beat Scotland 2-0 in a British International Championships match at Hampden Park. Douglas Cooke and Billy Liddell also scored, with our other strike coming from a Cole own goal. Bob’s farewell 1974 – Scottish left-back Bob Pursell died. He twice got us into trouble, firstly when we made an illegal approach to sign him from Queen’s Park in September 1911. He was then involved in the 1915 match-fixing scandal with Manchester United. He played 113 reds games without scoring, including the 1914 FA Cup Final, moving on to Port Vale in May 1920. New York friendlies We have twice played friendlies in New York on this day in history. 1953 - We beat 1. FC Nürnberg 4-3 in the Triborough Stadium, with Kevin Baron, Mervyn Jones, Billy Liddell and Sammy Smyth all on target. 1964 - We lost 2-0 to Hamburger SV at the Yankee Stadium. This was our first defeat in 36 games played over five visits to North America since the war. Meanwhile, Krisztián Németh struck the only goal as Hungary Under-19’s faced Portugal in a European Championships qualifier in Székesfehérvár, with keeper Péter Gulácsi also featuring. Damien Plessis and future reds Robbie Keane and Sotirios Kyrgiakos also played for their countries that day. 2013 – Future red Gini Wijnaldum scored for the Dutch Under-21’s as they beat Australia Under-20’s 3-1 in a friendly in Emmen. Signing on 2016 – Keeper Loris Karius signed from 1. FSV Mainz 05 for £4.7m, officially becoming a red on 1st July, making 49 senior appearances for the reds, including our UEFA Champions League Final defeat in Kyiv. He signed for Newcastle United in September 2022 after his contract expired. On the same day, former reds Assistant Manager Pako Ayestarán was appointed permanent Head Coach of Valencia, although he was sacked just four months later. 1912 – Inside-forward Arthur Metcalf signed from Newcastle United for £150. He netted 28 times in 63 reds games, playing in every position on the park. 2006 - Ex-reds left-back Grégory Vignal signed for Racing Club de Lens, having been released by Portsmouth. He had arrived at Anfield on a Bosman free transfer in July 2006, netting four goals in 134 games, helping us to claim the FA Community Shield in his very first senior appearance. 2017 - Amoo signed for Cambridge United having been released by Partick Thistle, netting twice in 27 games in his first season with the U’s. Other boss movements 2022 - Jürgen Klopp was named as both the LMA Manager of the Year and the Premier League’s Manager of the Season. 2001 - Kevin Keegan was appointed Manager of Manchester City, following his departure from the England job seven months earlier. He led them to the First Division title in his first season, then keeping them in the top flight before leaving in March 2005. 1997 - Graeme Souness resigned as Southampton boss. He had been in charge at The Dell for less than a year, during which time he had guided them to just one point clear of relegation, and famously signed Ali Dia, George Weah’s alleged cousin. Redders injured 1997 - Jamie Redknapp was stretchered off with an ankle injury as England beat South Africa 2-1 in a friendly at Old Trafford. This was not the only time he was injured while on international duty. Roger on target 1963 - Roger Hunt scored for the Football League side in a FA Centenary/Football League 75th anniversary match that ended 3-3 at Highbury. 1967 - He struck in England’s 2-0 friendly defeat of Spain at Wembley. Other international goalscorers 2019 – Future red Darwin Núñez struck as Uruguay Under-20’s beat Norway 3-1 in a World Championship Finals group game in Poland. 2014 – Jordon Ibe bagged a treble as England Under-19’s thumped Montenegro 6-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Walsall, his last goals at this level. This was his only goal for the senior Irish side. 2011 – Ex-red Robbie Keane bagged a brace, including a penalty, skippering the Republic of Ireland as they trounced Northern Ireland 5-0 in a Carling Nations Cup game in Dublin. 2012 - Future reds loanee Nuri Şahin netted for Turkey as they beat Georgia 3-1 in a friendly in Austria, his only goal as a Real Madrid player. 2006 – Şahin also played for Turkey as they drew a friendly 3-3 in Belgium. Backroom appointments 2012 – The appointments of Jen Chang as Corporate Relations and Communications Director and Chief Commercial Officer Billy Hogan were both announced. However, Chang left “by mutual consent” after just five months in the role. Chico the boss again 2002 - Steve Nicol was re-appointed interim head coach of New England Revolution, in the US Major League. He took them to the final of the MLS play-offs in his first full season, remaining in charge until October 2011. First and last caps 2006 - Mark González won his first cap as a reds player, and fourteenth to date, as Chile beat Steve Staunton’s Republic of Ireland side 1-0 in a friendly at Lansdowne Road, with future red Robbie Keane also featuring. Meanwhile, Ramon Calliste made his final appearance for Wales Under-21’s while on our books as they thumped Estonia 5-1 in a European Championships qualifier, with future red Ragnar Klavan winning his seventh and last cap at this level. Future red Daniel Agger and John Arne Riise were also in international action that day. 1998 – Future red Frode Kippe made his Norway Under-23’s debut as they beat Sweden 1-0 in Romania. 2019 – Rhys Williams won his fourth and last cap for England Under-18’s as they drew 1-1 with Spain in Slovakia, before losing a penalty shoot-out 3-2. Wembley glory for the 96 1989 - We clinched the FA Cup for the fourth time, in an all-Merseyside final, five weeks after the Hillsborough disaster that claimed 96 lives. John Aldridge, who was playing his hundredth reds game, opened the scoring in the fourth minute with a strike that was named as the BBC’s Goal of the Season, the only time the same player has claimed the award in consecutive seasons. We led until Stuart McCall equalised towards the end of the second half. Ian Rush put us back in front in extra-time before McCall became the first substitute to score twice in an FA Cup Final to level the match again. McCall’s achievement was then matched by Rushie who won us the cup with his 23rd FA Cup goal. The departure of a legend 1996 - Ian Rush signed for Leeds United on a free transfer, after his 346 strikes in 660 games had helped shoot us to countless honours. However, he bagged just three goals in 43 games for Leeds. Last win of the season 1985 - We played our only other first-class game on this day, winning 3-0 at West Ham United, our last win of a season that saw us finish second in the First Division, thirteen points behind Everton, and then go on to lose the European Cup Final on a tragic day at the Stade du Heysel in Brussels. Paul Walsh netted a brace, with Jim Beglin bagging the other. Jan Mølby played at centre-back, but lost five teeth in a collision with the Hammers’ Dave Swindlehurst. Afterwards, there was a guard of honour for the departing Firmino, James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keïta. Jimmy, Jimmy 1922 - Centre-forward Jimmy Walsh signed from Stockport County. He netted 27 times in 77 reds games, before moving on to Hull City in June 1928. 1925 - Right-back Jimmy ‘Parson’ Jackson signed from Aberdeen for £1,750. He struck twice in 224 games for the reds, appearing in every outfield position, and was renowned for his on-field arguments with notoriously foul-mouthed keeper Elisha Scott! He became reds skipper in 1928, and also wrote a regular column for the Liverpool Weekly Post before leaving the reds in 1933 to become ordained as a Presbyterian minister. 2002 – Defender David Raven signed as a professional. He made four first-team appearances but left Anfield to sign for Carlisle United in July 2006. Jack’s treble 1948 - Jack Balmer scored a hat-trick as we beat a Baltimore All Stars side 9-2, with Ken Brierley netting a brace and Billy Liddell, Willie Fagan, Jim Harley and Albert Stubbins all also on the scoresheet. 1953 - We played another friendly in the USA, beating a New England Select 4-0 in Fall River, thanks to two goals from Mervyn Jones and strikes from Jack Smith and Don Welsh. A special day for Emlyn 1972 - Emlyn Hughes nabbed his only full international goal as England beat Wales 3-0 in the British International Championships in Cardiff, up against John Toshack. 1980 - He played in the same tournament, no longer as a red, as England drew 1-1 with Northern Ireland at Wembley, as he captained them for the last time. This was his 23rd full international as skipper, and 61st in total. David Johnson, Terry McDermott and future red coach Joe Corrigan all also featured. Crazy Horse in fact turned out for England twice more on this day in history. 1978 - He captained Ray Clemence and Phil Neal against Kenny Dalglish and Graeme Souness as England won 1-0 at Hampden Park in the British International Championships. 1970 - He played in a B international as England won 1-0 in Colombia. In training for their birthdays 1869 - Left-half George Fleming was born in Bannockburn, Stirlingshire. He struck six times in 82 reds games after signing from Wolverhampton Wanderers in May 1901, helping us to the Second Division title in 1905, before becoming Assistant Trainer the following year. 1895 - Another Assistant Trainer, Jimmy Seddon, was born. He was in this role for fifteen years from 1939, during which time his son Kenneth was on our books. 1916 - Jack Westby was born in Aintree in 1916. Macca on the move 1983 - Steve McMahon signed for Aston Villa from Everton for £175,000, having turned down the chance to move to Anfield. He netted seven times in 91 games for the Villains, before eventually arriving at Anfield in September 1985 for double the money. Future red Dominic Solanke converted from the spot, with Ovie Ejaria also in action. 2018 – Future red Ryan Gravenberch won his fourth and last cap for the Dutch Under-17’s as they beat Italy on penalties to win the European Championships, after the Final ended 2-2 in Rotherham. More international goals 1975 - Celtic’s Kenny Dalglish and ex-red Ted MacDougall both scored as Scotland beat Northern Ireland 3-0 in the British International Championships at Hampden Park. 1990 - Future red Dean Saunders grabbed the only goal of Wales’s friendly encounter with Costa Rica at Ninian Park. 1998 - Milan Baroš was on target as the Czech Republic Under-17’s drew 1-1 in a friendly in Poland. Stig Inge Bjørnebye also played for his country that day. 2007 - Craig Lindfield struck while winning his seventh and final cap for England Under-19’s as they beat the Czech Republic 2-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Northampton, with Stephen Darby and Jack Hobbs both also featuring. 1964 - Roy Evans struck as England Schoolboys drew 2-2 with their Republic of Ireland counterparts in Cork. New coaches 2010 - Dietmar Hamann joined MK Dons as player-coach, while Gary McAllister was appointed First Team Coach at Middlesbrough, although he moved on to Aston Villa just four months later. Hamann played thirteen first-team games while in Milton Keynes, moving on to become a First Team Coach at Leicester City in February 2011. 2016 – Ex-reds boss Brendan Rodgers was appointed Manager of Celtic on a twelve-month rolling contract, leading them to domestic trebles in each of his first two campaigns before leaving for Leicester City in February 2019. 2019 – Former reds First Team Coach Steve Clarke was appointed Manager of Scotland, after a successful spell in charge of Kilmarnock. Also on the move 1955 – Full-back Steve Parr was released by the reds, then joining Exeter City. He made twenty appearances without notching after signing on a free transfer from Farrington Villa in May 1948. 2004 - Reserves right-back Stephen Vaughan left Anfield to join Chester City on a free transfer, making 85 appearances in two spells with the Blues. Meanwhile, Jason McAteer and Phil Babb were both released by Sunderland. McAteer went on to join Tranmere Rovers, while Babb retired from the game. 2008 - Former reserves forward Conal Platt signed for Conference National side Forest Green Rovers. Goss makes history 1994 - Norwich City’s Jeremy Goss became the last player to score in front of the standing Kop as the Canaries won 1-0. Goss said: “I’ve put that day down as the proudest moment of my footballing career.” The very last person to score was actually Kopite John Garner who took to the field in an odd outfit that incorporated a fez, dodging stewards and coppers to net in front of those left long after the match had ended. For the 97 1989 - We played our first game since Hillsborough, at Celtic in aid of the Hillsborough Disaster Appeal. Digger the best 1988 - John Barnes was named as Footballer of the Year by the Football Writers’ Association, to add to his PFA award. Alan Hansen finished as runner-up with 96% of the votes going to reds, and Barnes himself claiming two thirds of the nominations. 2000 - Sami Hyypiä and future red Harry Kewell were named in the PFA Team of the Year. Three-ton Mo 2023 – Mohamed Salah reached 300 reds appearances as we beat Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield by the odd goal in seven. We raced into a three-goal lead through Curtis Jones, Luis Díaz and a Salah spot-kick. Harry Kane bagged the most recent of his nine goals past us before the break, with Son Heung-min netting one of his seven against the reds in the second half. Ex-Toffee Richarlison nodded in a stoppage-time leveller, the most recent of his four past us, but Diogo Jota had the late, late final say. Happy birthdays 1931 – Left-winger Mervyn Jones was born in Bangor, one of the smallest players to ever play for the club at just five feet four inches. He signed from Bangor City in November 1951, moving on to Southampton in July 1953 after just five reds outings. 1991 – Former Icelandic reserves midfielder Victor Pálsson was born in Reykjavik. He joined the reds from AGF Århus in January 2009 but failed to make the first team, joining Hibernian two years later after a loan spell with Dagenham & Redbridge. 1992 - First Team Lead Physical Performance Coach Ruben Peeters was born in Belgium. He joined the reds in the summer of 2024. Storming back to the top flight 1962 - Roger Hunt and Alan A’Court both struck in our 2-1 win over Charlton Athletic, bringing us to 68 League goals at Anfield for the season, a club record. Red centurions 2005 - John Arne Riise played his 200th reds game as Steven Gerrard equalised with a 35-yard thunderbolt past future reds stopper Brad Jones in a 1-1 League draw with Middlesbrough at Anfield. Szilárd Németh had given the visitors an early lead. 1949 – Albert Stubbins reached a century of reds outings, netting after Jack Balmer had opened the scoring late on as we won 2-0 at Burnley. For the Saint 1973 - A testimonial match for Ian St. John was staged as the reds beat Chelsea 4-2 at Anfield, with the Saint grabbing a brace and Brian Hall and Roger Hunt also netting. 1924 - We played in another testimonial, drawing 1-1 at Aberdeen in a game staged for the Dons’ Scottish international defender John Hutton. 1951 - Our other such game on this day saw Billy Liddell strike in a 1-1 draw at Brighton & Hove Albion, in a game in aid of Harry Baldwin, Jack Ball and Jack Dugnolle. Ins and outs 2018 – The club announced that Assistant Manager Željko Buvač was to take a leave of absence for the rest of the season, with his departure later made permanent. 1906 – Full-back Percy Saul signed from Plymouth Argyle, netting twice in 83 reds games, moving on to Coventry City in July 1909. 1898 - Centre-half Alex Raisbeck signed from Hibernian for £350. He played 341 times in eleven years, netting nineteen times and becoming our first skipper to lift the League title in 1901. He won a further League title five years later, as well as a Second Division championship, returning to the club in 1939 as a scout until his death ten years later. 1897 – Inside-forward Willie Michael returned to Heart Of Midlothian. He had joined the reds from Tynecastle in May 1896, scoring five times in 23 reds games. 1894 – Keeper Billy McOwen left the reds to sign as an amateur for Blackpool, as well as returning to his dentistry career, after eleven clean sheets in 27 appearances since arriving from Darwen in July 1892, helping us to claim the Second Division title. Glory for the kids 1996 - We took a step towards winning the FA Youth Cup for the first of three times to date. We won 2-0 at West Ham United, going on to win the return leg 2-1 at Anfield. More farewells 1955 – Ex-reds forward Bert Goode died in Wrexham. He struck once in seven reds outings after signing from his hometown club in May 1908, moving on to Wrexham in June 1910. He scored 136 goals in 276 matches in his three spells at Wrexham, including playing in their first ever Football League match in August 1921, and is remembered as one of the greatest strikers in their history. 2011 – Australian keeper Dean Bouzanis left the club by mutual consent. He joined League One side Oldham Athletic seven months later. Player of the year 2008 - On-loan winger Paul Anderson was named Swansea City’s Young Player of the Year after helping them to the League One title. Farewells to legends 1991 - Alan Hansen retired through injury. He had signed from Partick Thistle for £100,000 in May 1977 and made 620 reds appearances, notching fourteen times and helping us to claim three European Cups, eight League titles, two FA Cups, three League Cups and four FA Charity Shields. 2021 – Scottish forward Ian St. John died. He joined from his hometown club Motherwell in May 1961 for a then club record fee of £37,500. The Saint scored 118 goals in 425 games for the reds, including the winning goal in the 1965 FA Cup Final, also helping us to win two First Division titles, the Second Division and FA Charity Shield, before moving to South Africa in February 1971 to join Hellenic. Triple treble This day has brought three reds hat-tricks. 1902 - Sam Raybould netted a treble in our very first senior game on this day, a 4-0 home League win over Manchester City, with Jack Cox adding the other. 1930 - We faced City again, losing a top-flight encounter at Maine Road 4-3, with Jim Smith, Archie McPherson and Gordon Hodgson on the scoresheet. Eric Brook bagged one of his nine goals against the reds, with Tommy Tait nabbing the last two of his four against us and future Blue Tommy Johnson netting one of his eight past us. 1947 - Albert Stubbins grabbed three including a full-length diving header along the icy pitch in a 4-1 FA Cup Sixth Round win over Birmingham City at Anfield, with Jack Balmer also on target. Philippe Coutinho struck the winner. 2014 - We won 3-0 at Southampton, with Luis Suárez and substitute Raheem Sterling on target before Steven Gerrard converted a last-minute penalty, his tenth consecutive success from the spot, while future red Adam Lallana hit the woodwork as Suárez reached a century of League outings for the reds. Reds farewells 1958 - Outside-right Brian Jackson played his 133rd and last reds game as we lost an FA Cup Sixth Round tie 2-1 at Blackburn Rovers, with Bobby Murdoch netting our goal. 1962 - Inside-right Fred Pagnam died. Dixie dies 1980 – Legendary Blues forward Dixie Dean died from a heart attack after attending our 2-1 win at Goodison. Ex-Blue David Johnson scored, added to by a controversial Phil Neal penalty, with Peter Eastoe scoring one of his four goals against us. Ex-reds boss Bill Shankly was also in attendance at this match. Sami Hyypiä was playing his 75th game for his country. In charge 1981 - Larry Lloyd was appointed Manager of basement side Wigan Athletic. Also in international friendly action 2006 - Paul Jones won his first cap as a Queens Park Rangers player and Craig Bellamy made his final appearance while with Blackburn Rovers as John Toshack’s Wales were held to a goalless draw by Paraguay at the Millennium Stadium. Fernando Morientes won his final cap as a reds player in Spain’s 3-2 defeat of the Ivory Coast, with Xabi Alonso, Luis García and future red Fernando Torres also playing. Dirk Kuyt struck for the last time as a Feyenoord player, notching the only goal as the Netherlands faced Ecuador in Amsterdam. Nicolas Anelka won his last cap as a Fenerbahçe Spor Kulübü player as future red Martin Škrtel’s Slovakia beat France 2-1 in the Stade de France, with fellow ex-red Alou Diarra also in action. Jerzy Dudek, John Arne Riise, future reds Yossi Benayoun, Philipp Degen, Sotirios Kyrgiakos, Christian Poulsen and Nuri Şahin, ex-red Milan Baroš and future reds youngsters Michael Collins and Shane O'Connor also played for their countries that day. 2012 - Ragnar Klavan captained Estonia for the first time and scored his only goal as an AZ Alkmaar player while winning his 76th cap in their 2-0 friendly defeat of El Salvador in California. On the move 2013 – Swedish left-winger Alexander Kačaniklić joined Burnley on loan from Fulham, playing six times for the Clarets. 2012 – Ex-reds reserves winger Adam Hammill joined Middlesbrough on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers, turning out ten times without scoring. 1996 - Gary Ablett joined Sheffield United on loan from Everton. He played twelve times for the Blades, before being sold to Birmingham City that summer. 1983 - Peter Beardsley re-signed for Vancouver Whitecaps on a free transfer from Manchester United. He spent six months there in his second spell, before returning to England to join Newcastle United.

Birth of a legend 1922 - Billy Liddell was born in Townhill, Dunfermline. He joined the reds in July 1938 while still only sixteen, signing as an amateur from Lochgelly Violet for £200 and turning professional nine months later. He left the club in 1961, having struck 228 times in 534 games. His only club honour was the League title in 1947, although he also played in the FA Cup Final three years later. He was on target on his 26th birthday as we beat Nottingham Forest 4-1 in the Third Round of the FA Cup, with Albert Stubbins grabbing a brace and Bob Priday also on the scoresheet with his sixth and last reds goal. In comes Souey 1978 - Graeme Souness signed from Middlesbrough for £352,000 after 22 goals in 176 League games. He won five League titles, three European Cups, four League Cups and three FA Charity Shields in six years as a reds player, netting 55 times in 359 games. His later time as Manager was considerably less successful, with just one FA Cup triumph, along with the controversial dismantling of the legendary Boot Room, and his infamous liaison with a certain tabloid newspaper. He therefore became our oldest post-war debutant aged 36 years and 267 days. 1981 - We also faced the Villains, going down 2-0 to the eventual champions in the Midlands thanks to goals from Peter Withe and Dennis Mortimer. Get Carter 1991 - Jimmy Carter signed from Millwall for £800,000 after twelve goals in 130 games for the Lions. He moved on to Arsenal for £500,000 after just nine months and eight appearances in his time at Anfield. More ins and outs 1949 – Left-winger Peter Kippax signed for the reds a few days after his contract with his hometown club Burnley was cancelled. He only made one senior appearance, moving on to Preston North End in 1950. 2007 - Left-winger Sebastián Leto signed from Club Atlético Lanús for £1.85m, although the transfer was not formally completed until seven months later. Sheila’s farewell 2008 - The funeral of Club Secretary Sheila Walsh took place at St. Mary’s The Virgin, Waterloo. Those who paid tribute to her included boss Rafael Benítez, who said, “Sheila worked as a Secretary to seven different managers at Liverpool Football Club during her 26 years with us. I was privileged to work with her during these last four years. Ryan in trouble 2011 - Ryan Babel was charged by the FA with improper conduct relating to tweeting about referee Howard Webb after our recent defeat at Manchester United. Other reds games 2000 – We lost 1-0 at home to Blackburn Rovers in the Fourth Round of the FA Cup, with Nathan Blake bagging the late winner. 1998 – Jamie Redknapp struck twice as we beat Wimbledon 2-0 at Anfield 1979 – Southend United held us to a goalless draw in our FA Cup Third Round trip to a snowy Roots Hall. We won the replay, making it as far as the Semi-final that season. 1976 – We were held to a 3-3 draw by Ipswich Town, with Jimmy Case adding to a Kevin Keegan brace. On the same day, future red Sami Hyypiä played for Finland in their 2-0 friendly defeat in Spain. 1988 - John Durnin made his third and final reds appearance, as a substitute, as we lost 4-1 at West Ham United at the same stage of the competition, our worst ever League Cup defeat. Future red Paul Ince opened the scoring with a spectacular volley, before heading in a second. John Aldridge converted a penalty, with Steve Staunton then heading into his own net, unchallenged. A Tony Gale free-kick completed the scoring. Births and death 2021 – Ray Kennedy died. After five successful years as a forward with Arsenal, Bob Paisley converted him into a left-sided midfielder following his club record £180,000 arrival as Bill Shankly’s last signing in July 1974. He won six League titles, three European Cups, the UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, League Cup and three FA Charity Shields before joining John Toshack’s Swansea City in January 1982, striking 72 times in 393 reds games. 1970 - Phil Babb was born in Lambeth. He struck once in 170 games for the reds following his club record £3.6m capture from Coventry City in September 1994, also a then British record fee for a defender. He crossed Stanley Park for £800,000 in January 2002 and netted twice in 21 reds games, of which we only lost three. His next club was Hannover 96 in Germany, who he joined in February 2004 after being released by the reds. 1997 – Keeper Kai McKenzie-Lyle was born in London. He joined the reds in August 2018 but was released in June 2020 and is now with Welling United. Most recently 2023 – We beat Austrians LASK 4-0 in our UEFA Europa League group game at Anfield. Luis Díaz and Cody Gakpo both scored early on, with Mohamed Salah converting a penalty after the break. Gakpo completed the scoring in stoppage time. This result ensured we qualified as group winners with a game to spare. 2019 – Keeper Alisson Becker was dismissed for handling outside his area late on when we were leading Brighton & Hove Albion 2-0 at Anfield thanks to a pair of Virgil van Dijk headers. Lewis Dunk beat Adrián from the resulting free-kick but the game ended 2-1. 2005 - Momo Sissoko was sent off as we won 2-0 at Sunderland thanks to goals from Luis García and Steven Gerrard. This ensured we had gone the whole month of November without conceding a goal, a club first. 2003 - We entertained Birmingham City. Keech’s farewell 1895 – Half-back Bill Keech played his sixth and final reds game as we lost 2-0 at Leicester Fosse, on our way to claiming the Second Division title. On the move 1989 - Nigel Spackman was signed for Rangers by Graeme Souness, arriving from Queens Park Rangers for £500,000. He had played 84 times after signing from Bradford City in January 1923, scoring just once and being known for his long throw-ins. Bosses standing down 2010 – Chairman Martin Broughton left the club, having successfully completed the sale of the reds to New England Sports Ventures. 2001 - Mark Wright resigned as Manager of Third Division Oxford United after being suspended for alleged racial abuse of a referee. 2007 - Roy Hodgson’s contract as Manager of Finland expired. He had narrowly failed to lead them to their first major championships, but turned down the offer to stay in charge.
