Recent departures 2023 – Brazilian midfielder Fabinho was sold to Saudi Arabian side Al-Ittihad for a reported £40m. He had signed from Monaco for an initial £39m in July 2018, scoring eleven times in 219 outings as he helped us to claim the Premier League title, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, League Cup and FA Community Shield. On the same day, Virgil van Dijk was appointed club captain, with Trent Alexander-Arnold named as his deputy. 2015 – Centre-forward Rickie Lambert was sold to West Bromwich Albion after just three goals in 36 reds games since arriving from Southampton for £4m in June 2014. Stewart off the mark 1992 - Paul Stewart scored his first reds goal, the winner in our 2-1 friendly win in Tromsø, with Ian Rush also on the scoresheet. His time at Anfield was a failure, as he scored just three times in 42 first-class appearances in nearly four seasons. He eventually left for Sunderland on a free transfer in March 1996. Most recently 2019 – We beat Olympique Lyonnais 3-1 in a friendly in Geneva, with Roberto Firmino and Harry Wilson netting either side of a Joachim Andersen own goal. On the same day, Dutch defender Ki-Jana Hoever signed his first professional contract with the reds, while centre-half Rhys Williams joined Kidderminster Harriers on loan, scoring once in just three games. 2022 - Left-winger Mateusz Musiałowski played his first reds game as Racing Club de Strasbourg Alsace beat a very young reds side 3-0 in a pre-season friendly at Anfield. Up against Norway We played a Norway XI in Vålerenga on this day in consecutive years as part of our pre-season campaigns. 1996 - Robbie Fowler scored as we drew 1-1 with the match being decided by a penalty shoot-out. Welsh reserves striker Lee Jones missed our fifth and final spot-kick as we lost 5-4. 1997 - We won 3-1, thanks to a brace from Robbie Fowler and a strike from the young Michael Owen. Reds in Ireland 1970 - Bobby Graham and Peter Thompson were both on the scoresheet as we beat a League Of Ireland Select side 2-1 at Dalymount Park in Dublin. 1998 - Patrik Berger, Karl-Heinz Riedle and Danny Murphy grabbed our goals as we beat St. Patrick's Athletic 3-2 in the Carlsberg Belfast Challenge at Lansdowne Road. Twice at Ewood Park 1971 - John Toshack netted to give us a 1-0 victory over Blackburn Rovers in a pre-season friendly. 1999 - Robbie Fowler and Jamie Redknapp were on target as we drew 2-2. Red births 2003 – Right-back Calvin Ramsay was born in Aberdeen, signing from his hometown club for an initial £4.2m in June 2022. He only made two senior appearances in an injury-hit first campaign with the reds. 1895 – Right-half Francis Checkland was born in Seaforth. He arrived from junior football during the 1918/19 season but only made five senior appearances before joining Tranmere Rovers in October 1923. 1883 – Keeper Don Sloan was born in Rankinston, Ayr. He signed from Everton for £300 in May 1908, failing to keep a clean sheet in six reds games before becoming Player/Manager of his old club Distillery in Belfast in July 1909. Other friendlies 2004 - We lost 1-0 to Porto, the reigning European champions, in a ChampionsWorld Series game in Toronto. 1994 - We helped the German town of Fulda celebrate its 1,250th anniversary, losing 2-0 to Bayern München in the Firestone International Challenge Cup at Das Stadion der Stad. 1993 - John Barnes bagged a brace, with Stig Inge Bjørnebye and Ian Rush also on target as we won 4-3 at Tranmere Rovers. England reds on target 1996 - Michael Owen and future red Emile Heskey both netted for England Under-18’s in Besançon as they beat Belgium 3-2 to claim third place in the European Championship Finals. Reds reserve Jamie Cassidy also played. 2009 - Conor Coady, Jack Robinson and Andre Wisdom all featured as England Under-17’s beat host nation Norway 1-0 in a Nordic Tournament group game in Trondheim. Also on the move 1996 - Mark Walters joined Swindon Town from Southampton on a free transfer, just six months and nine appearances after arriving at The Dell. He scored 32 times in 130 appearances, as the Robins struggled to survive in the First Division. 1999 - Christian Ziege joined Middlesbrough from AC Milan for £4m. He scored six times in 29 League games while at the Riverside, before moving to Anfield in a rancorous transfer the following summer. 2009 – Steve Finnan signed for Portsmouth, having been released by R.C.D. Espanyol four days previously. He played 25 times for Pompey before being released at the end of the season. On the same day, reserves right-back Stephen Darby and midfielder Jay Spearing both signed new contracts to tie them to the reds until 2012. Darby moved on at the end of his contract while Spearing moved on to Bolton Wanderers in August 2013 after a season on loan there. 2013 – Keeper Tyrell Belford joined Swindon Town on a free transfer, so far making just twelve senior appearances for the Robins. On the same day, future loanee centre-half Steven Caulker joined Cardiff City from Tottenham Hotspur for a club record fee of more than £8m, going on to score five times in 39 outings before moving to Queens Park Rangers a year later. 2019 – Keeper Lawrence Vigouroux signed for Chilean side Everton de Viña del Mar, leaving after five months having failed to play a senior game as the season there was cancelled due to social unrest. Other internationals in action 2021 – Future red Wataru Endō played for Japan as they beat New Zealand on penalties in their Olympics Finals Quarter-final in Kashima, after the game had ended goalless after extra time. 2014 – Trent Alexander-Arnold captained England Under-17’s as they lost 3-0 to Sweden in a Nordic Tournament group game in Denmark, with Herbie Kane also featuring. 2011 - Dani Pacheco featured as Spain Under-20’s beat Costa Rica 4-1 in a World Championship Finals group game in Colombia. 2007 – Future reds reserves forward Nikola Sarić played for Denmark Under-17’s in their 2-0 defeat of the Faroe Islands in a tournament game in Ikast. 1988 – Future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel played for Brazil as they drew 1-1 with a Sweden Olympics XI in Stockholm.

Willkommen Jürgen 2015 - Jürgen Klopp was appointed reds boss following the sacking of Brendan Rodgers. He led us to UEFA Champions League glory in Madrid, our first League title in thirty years, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, two League Cups and the FA Community Shield, generating a great rapport with the crowd before leaving in May 2024. On the same day, the departures of Chris Davies, Glen Driscoll, Gary McAllister and Sean O’Driscoll from the backroom staff were all announced. All sitting comfortably 1994 - Neil Ruddock scored the first goal in front of the new all-seater Kop, as we beat Aston Villa 3-2, with Robbie Fowler bagging a brace. Guy Whittingham and ex-red Steve Staunton struck for the visitors as Jamie Redknapp reached a century of reds outings. Other centenaries 1968 - Tommy Smith and Alan Ball, with one of his eleven goals against the reds, were on the scoresheet in the hundredth League derby as we drew 1-1 at Anfield. 1898 – Full-back Archie Goldie played his hundredth reds game as we lost 2-1 at Stoke, with Jack Cox on target. Carra’s record 1999 - Jamie Carragher equalled the record number of England Under-21’s caps, held by Gary Owen, as he won his 22nd cap, captaining them for the first time in their 4-1 friendly defeat of Denmark at Valley Parade. Substitute David Thompson scored, with fellow red Steven Gerrard also in the team. Carra went on to claim 27 in total, which was still an England record until he was overtaken by Scott Carson, and more recently by James Milner who eventually made 46 appearances. 1996 - David Thompson won his first cap at Under-21’s level as a substitute in England’s goalless draw with Poland at Molineux. Future red Emile Heskey was in the starting eleven. Bowing out 1955 - Billy Liddell won his 29th and final cap as Scotland beat Northern Ireland 2-1 at Windsor Park in Belfast. Future reds keeper Tommy Younger won his fifth cap in the same game. 2013 - Craig Bellamy announced his retirement from international football after nineteen strikes in 78 games for Wales. Off the mark 1921 - Harry Beadles struck the first of his six reds goals as we drew 1-1 at Preston North End in a top-flight encounter. Right-half Francis Checkland played his fifth and final reds game that day, with Preston’s late equaliser coming from the spot from future red Archie Rawlings. 1949 – Full-back Ray Lambert bagged the first of his two reds goals, scoring from the spot in our 2-0 defeat of Middlesbrough at Anfield, with Jimmy Payne also netting. Jimmy’s treble 1930 – Jimmy Smith scored a hat-trick as we thumped Everton 5-0 in a Lancashire Senior Cup Second Round tie at Anfield, with Gordon Hodgson and Tom Bradshaw also scoring. Most recently 2023 – We drew 2-2 at Brighton & Hove Albion, with Samon Adringa putting the Seagulls in front before Mohamed Salah bagged a first-half brace, including one from the spot. However, Lewis Dunk levelled the score after Ryan Gravenberch had earlier struck the bar. International debuts 2009 – Future red Dejan Lovren came off the bench to make his debut in Croatia’s 3-2 friendly defeat of Qatar in Rijeka. 1997 - Bjørn Tore Kvarme won his only senior international cap as Norway were held to a goalless friendly draw in Oslo by Colombia. Clubmate Stig Inge Bjørnebye also played, with future red Milan Baroš in action for the Czech Republic Under-16’s on the same day. 1995 - Brad Friedel won his first cap as a Galatasaray player as the USA beat Saudi Arabia by the odd goal in seven in a friendly in Washington DC. Future reds Markus Babbel and Christian Ziege both played in Germany’s 6-1 thumping of Moldova in a Euro ’96 qualifier in Leverkusen on the same day. Off to Filbert Street again and again 1927 - We drew 1-1 at Leicester City with Gordon Hodgson on target and Ernie Hine bagging one of his ten strikes past us. 1932 - Hodgson struck again as we won 2-1, with Syd Roberts scoring his first reds goal, while Danny Liddle netted the first of his four goals against the reds. 1938 - Harman van den Berg netted an 89th minute equaliser, his first reds goal, as we drew 2-2 with Berry Nieuwenhuys also on target. Twice against the Robins We have twice played at Ashton Gate on this day in history, winning on neither occasion. 1955 - Bristol City won our Second Division encounter 2-1 with Tony Rowley bagging our consolation as John Atyeo bagged the first two of his five goals past us for the home side. 1974 - We were held to a goalless draw in a Third Round League Cup tie. More legends 2008 - Kenny Dalglish, Kevin Keegan, Bob Paisley and the 1978 reds team were all inducted into the National Football Museum’s European Hall of Fame at the Echo Arena in Liverpool. Ins and out 1991 - Winger Jimmy Carter joined Arsenal for £500,000, just nine months after signing from Millwall. He had made just eight appearances in his time at Anfield. 2020 – Brazilian keeper Marcelo Pitaluga signed from Fluminense for an initial £1m, so far making the first-team bench on seven occasions. 2021 – Midfielder Kaide Gordon signed as a professional. He had arrived from Derby County eight months earlier for an initial fee reported to be £1m, making his senior bow in our League Cup Third Round tie at Norwich City seven months later. He has struck once in seven outings to date. Management ends 2001 - Joey Jones stepped down as Caretaker Manager of Wrexham. He had been in charge for just two games, both of which were lost, and was replaced by Denis Smith. 1997 - Jan Mølby was sacked as Manager of Swansea City, his first management role, despite only losing sixteen of his eighty games in charge, and only just missing out on promotion in his one full season at the Vetch Field. Avi for Israel Ex-red Avi Cohen twice turned out for his country on this day in consecutive years. 1985 - Israel lost a World Cup qualifier 2-1 to Australia in Tel-Aviv, with future red Ronnie Rosenthal also appearing as a substitute. 1986 - Avi featured as Romania won a friendly 4-2 at the same stadium. Yossi’s first strike 2005 - Yossi Benayoun bagged his first goal for Israel as a West Ham United player as they beat the Faroe Islands 2-1 in a World Cup qualifier in Tel-Aviv. Future red Fernando Torres grabbed both goals as Spain beat Belgium 2-0 in another qualifier in Brussels. On the same day, future red Nuri Şahin made his senior international bow, netting his only goal as a Ballspielverein Borussia 09 e.V. Dortmund player as Turkey beat Germany 2-1 in a friendly in Istanbul. On the same day, Luis Suárez scored from the spot while winning his first cap as a Club Atlético de Madrid player as Uruguay beat Chile 2-1 in a World Cup qualifier in Montevideo. Divock Origi, Andy Robertson, Virgil van Dijk, Gini Wijnaldum, future red Cody Gakpo and ex-reds Ryan Babel, Christian Benteke, Sebastián Coates, Péter Gulácsi and Simon Mignolet all also played for their countries that day, with Steve Clarke taking charge of Scotland as they qualified for the Euro 2020 Finals. More international goalscorers 2017 – Emre Can scored his first senior international goal, and his only one as a reds player, as Germany beat Azerbaijan 5-1 in a World Cup qualifier in Kaiserslautern. Mohamed Salah scored twice, including one from the spot, as Egypt beat Republic of the Congo 2-1 in a World Cup qualifier in Alexandria. Jordan Henderson and Daniel Sturridge both featured as England won a qualifier 1-0 in Lithuania, while Rhian Brewster played for England Under-17’s as they beat Chile 4-0 in the World Championship Finals in India, with ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper in charge. Future red Andy Robertson also featured in a World Cup qualifier that day. 2006 – Kolo Touré scored his last goal as an Arsenal player as the Ivory Coast thrashed Gabon 5-0 in an African Cup of Nations qualifier in Abidjan. David N’Gog netted for France Under-21’s as they beat Turkey 2-0 in a friendly in Troyes, while future red Jordan Henderson bagged his first goal at the same level as England beat Romania 2-1 in the first leg of their European Championships Play-off at Carrow Road, with future red Daniel Sturridge also featuring. On the same day, Luis Suárez struck a hat-trick that included a penalty, his final goals as an Ajax player, as Uruguay trounced Indonesia 7-1 in a friendly in Jakarta. John Arne Riise was booked and also grabbed his last goal while with Roma as Norway won a Euro 2012 qualifier 2-1 in Cyprus, with ex-red Robbie Keane scoring from the spot as the Republic of Ireland lost 3-2 to Russia in another qualifier in Dublin. International reds galore 2005 - A whole host of reds featured in World Cup qualifiers, with Peter Crouch winning his first cap as a reds player in England’s 1-0 defeat of Austria at Old Trafford, and Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard, future reds Joe Cole and Christian Poulsen and ex-red Michael Owen all also in action. Djibril Cissé struck as France drew 1-1 in future red Philip Degen’s Switzerland, with ex-red El-Hadji Diouf on target as Senegal beat a Mali side that included Momo Sissoko and Djimi Traoré 3-0 in Dakar. 2004 – Darren Potter and future reds Daniel Agger, Alberto Aquilani, Ramon Calliste, Scott Carson, Stewart Downing, Glen Johnson, Gary O’Neil and Jermaine Pennant all played in European Championships qualifiers at Under-21’s level, with future red James Milner netting his first goal at this level. 2007 - Péter Gulácsi and Krisztián Németh both played for Hungary Under-19’s as they trounced Kazakhstan 6-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Szekesfehervar, with Németh winning his first cap at this level as a red. 2011 – Gulácsi skippered Hungary Under-21’s in their 2-1 European Championships qualifying defeat in Turkey. Charlie Adam and future red Mohamed Salah were also in international action that day. 2015 – Sheyi Ojo, Jordan Rossiter and future red Dominic Solanke all played as England Under-19’s won a European Championships qualifier 2-0 in Macedonia. Mamadou Sakho and ex-reds Javier Mascherano and Krisztián Németh also featured for their countries on the same day. 2021 – Ex-red Danny Ward scored an own goal as Wales drew 2-2 with the Czech Republic in a World Cup qualifier in Prague, with both Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah captaining their countries to victories in World Cup action. Owen Beck, Morgan Boyes, Neco Williams, future reds Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch, and ex-reds Joe Allen, Ki-Jana Hoever and Harry Wilson all also featured in internationals. Joe honoured 2012 – Reds midfielder Joe Allen was named Player of the Year and Club Player of the Year for 2011/12 at the FAW Awards, based on his time with Swansea City and the national side. Jimmy’s death 1908 – Forward Jimmy Stott died in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He signed from Middlesbrough in August 1893, netting fourteen times in seventeen games as we won the Second Division title in our first League season, moving on to Grimsby Town in July 1894. Other reds games 1988 – We lost 1-0 at Luton Town, with Mick Harford bagging one of his seven goals against the reds. 1977 – Kenny Dalglish and David Fairclough netted as we beat Chelsea 2-0 at Anfield. 1973 – We drew a League Cup Second Round tie 2-2 at West Ham United. Peter Cormack put us in front before ex-red Ted MacDougall equalised. Steve Heighway restored our lead, but Pop Robson levelled with one of his five strikes past us. 1966 – Fulham held us to a 2-2 draw in L4. Geoff Strong scored inside the first minute, but Allan Clarke bagged the first two of his seven goals against us, with Ian St. John completing the scoring before the break. 1960 – We won a Second Division encounter 2-1 at Lincoln City as Roger Hunt nabbed a brace. 1904 – We beat Barnsley 2-0 in a Second Division fixture at Oakwell. Bobby Robinson had a penalty saved but converted the rebound, with John Carlin also on target. In opposition 1938 – Ex-reds reserves centre-half Matt O’Mahoney won his only cap for Northern Ireland as they lost 2-0 to Scotland in the British International Championships at Windsor Park. Andy Beattie, who guested for the reds during the war and later spent some time on our backroom staff, and Bill Shankly were both on the winning side. O’Mahoney also won six caps for the south of Ireland.

Reds on the way out 1992 - Dean Saunders was sold to Aston Villa for £2.3m, just a year and 25 goals in 61 games after arriving from Derby County for a British record £2.9m fee in July 1991. 1986 - Gary Ablett joined Hull City on loan. He made five appearances for the Tigers before returning to Anfield. Scales weighs in 1994 - Centre-half John Scales made his reds bow as West Ham United held us to a goalless draw at Anfield. Tony Cottee was sent off for the Hammers as Rob Jones reached a century of League appearances for the reds. Bell tolls again 2011 – Craig Bellamy played the first game of his second reds spell as we lost 1-0 at Stoke City, with Jon Walters scoring from the spot with the first of his seven goals past us to date after Jamie Carragher was penalised. Ex-red Peter Crouch made his Potters bow. Thumping the Trotters 1930 - We secured our record victory over Bolton Wanderers, running out 7-2 winners. Archie McPherson, Dick Edmed and Gordon Hodgson all nabbed braces, with Jimmy Smith completing the scoring. Jack Milsom struck the first of his seven goals against the reds, with George Gibson bagging one of his five. 1949 - We entertained the Trotters in another First Division meeting, with Kevin Baron netting in a 1-1 draw. Red endings 1938 – Matt Busby struck his third and final reds goal as we beat Charlton Athletic 1-0 at Anfield, with outside-right Berry Nieuwenhuys playing his 200th game for the club. 1974 – Midfielder John McLaughlin played his 55th and final game for the club in our 2-1 defeat of Brentford in a League Cup Second Round encounter at Anfield. Ray Kennedy and Phil Boersma both struck before the break, after we had fallen behind to an early Roger Cross goal. 1975 – Left-back Alec Lindsay nabbed his eighteenth and last goal for the reds, converting a penalty to secure a 1-0 League Cup Second Round win at York City. Beating the champions 2016 – We thumped reigning champions Leicester City 4-1 at Anfield. Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mané scored before Jamie Vardy pulled a goal back, the third of his ten past us to date. Adam Lallana struck after the break with Firmino adding a fourth late on. The crowd of 53,075 was the largest at Anfield since May 1977 as the new, expanded Main Stand was used for the first time. Up against Spurs 1952 - We beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 at Anfield in a top-flight match. John Smith equalised after Eddie Baily had given the visitors the lead from distance, with Billy Liddell converting a late penalty. 2005 - Our fixture at White Hart Lane ended goalless. Christening Roker Park 1898 - We took part in the first ever game at Roker Park as Sunderland won 1-0 in our First Division encounter thanks to a Jim Leslie strike. 1927 - We also lost on Wearside, with Gordon Hodgson netting in our 2-1 defeat. Dave Halliday scored one of his thirteen goals past us, with Len Hargreaves also on target. Double centurions 1983 – Alan Hansen played his 200th League game as we won 2-0 at Arsenal thanks to goals from Craig Johnston and Kenny Dalglish. 1966 – Keeper Tommy Lawrence reached 200 reds appearances in our 1-1 draw with Sheffield Wednesday at Anfield, with Geoff Strong on target. Off on loan 2013 – Portuguese midfielder João Teixeira joined Brentford on loan, but only played twice before returning early to Melwood as the Bees struggled in League One. Red beginnings 1895 – Half-back Bill Keech signed from Barnsley St. Peter’s, although he played just six Second Division games, helping us to claim the title that season, returning to his former club in 1897. He later played as a forward for Leicester Fosse, before returning to the half-back line with Queens Park Rangers’ first professional team in the Southern League. 1910 - Forward Joseph Brough made the first of his eleven reds appearances in our 2-1 win at Blackburn Rovers. Jack Parkinson grabbed both our goals as right-half Bobby Robinson played his 200th game for the club. 1928 – Inside-forward Jack Haigh was born in Rotherham. He signed from Gainsborough Trinity in October 1949, netting three times in eleven outings before joining Sc***horpe United in August 1952. He is remembered as one of the Iron’s greatest ever players, scoring 72 times in 264 games for them. 1995 – Midfielder Dan Trickett-Smith was born in Newcastle-under-Lyme. He arrived from Crewe Alexandra for an initial £300,000 in April 2012, signing pro terms in the summer of 2013. 1996 – Left-back Sam Hart was born in Horwich. He arrived at Melwood from Manchester United’s Academy, failing to break through to the first team, moving on to Blackburn Rovers in August 2017.
