Tom takes charge 1896 - Tom Watson was appointed as reds boss, doubling his salary to £300 a year from his time at Sunderland, whom he had led to three League titles and three FA Cup Semi-finals in four seasons. He went beyond the remit of Club Secretary at Anfield, involving himself in team selection, tactics and player recruitment, so becoming a Manager in all but name. He led the reds to two League titles and the Second Division championship and our first ever FA Cup Final, remaining in charge until his death in May 1915. Happy McBirthday 1891 - Legendary left-back Donald McKinlay was born in Newton, Cambuslang, near Glasgow. He signed from Newton Villa in January 1910, making 434 appearances before joining Prescot Cables in July 1929. He scored 34 times, including one struck spectacularly from ten yards inside his own half at West Ham United in January 1926! He skippered us to two League titles, and also played in our first FA Cup Final in 1914. Off on loan 2008 – Two young centre-backs left the club to go out on loan. Jack Hobbs joined Leicester City, turning out 49 times as they claimed the League One title before signing on permanently in April 2009. Meanwhile, Godwin Antwi only played seven games for Tranmere Rovers, later joining Hereford United for another loan spell before leaving the reds for good for Vejle Boldklub in Denmark in December 2009. Red bows 2012 – Full-back Ryan McLaughlin played his first reds game as we lost 2-1 to Roma in a friendly at the Fenway Park baseball stadium in Boston on our North American tour, with Charlie Adam on target. 1972 - Peter Cormack made his first appearance as we won 2-0 at Chester in a game played behind closed doors. Brian Hall and Steve Heighway struck the goals. Anfield departures 1958 - Outside-right Brian Jackson was sold to Port Vale for £1,700. He had struck eleven times in 133 reds games since his arrival in November 1951 from Leyton Orient for £6,500 plus forward Don Woan. 1934 – Forward Dave Wright was sold to Hull City for £1,000 after bagging 35 goals in exactly a century of reds games since signing from Sunderland in March 1930. 1998 - Reserves winger Nicky Rizzo left Anfield for Crystal Palace on a free transfer. He netted four times in 41 games for the Eagles, before joining Italian side Ternana two years later. 2016 – Welsh midfielder Joe Allen was sold to Stoke City for £13m after seven goals in 132 reds games since his £15m arrival from Swansea City in August 2012. On the same day, ex-reds midfielder Sammy Lee was appointed Assistant Manager of England, under Sam Allardyce. Signing on 1892 – Keeper Billy McOwen arrived from Darwen. He kept eleven clean sheets in 27 appearances, helping us to claim the Second Division title. He left the reds to sign as an amateur for Blackpool in July 1894, as well as returning to his dentistry career. 1986 - Barry Venison signed from Sunderland for £200,000. He netted three goals in 158 appearances for the reds, winning two League titles, an FA Cup and two FA Charity Shields in his time at Anfield. New stadium plans 2007 - New designs for the new stadium in Stanley Park were unveiled, coinciding with the submission of the official planning application to Liverpool City Council. This was to be a 60,000-seater stadium, with 18,000 in the Kop. However, this project has since been firmly shelved. Stevie honoured 2008 - Steven Gerrard was awarded an Honorary Fellowship from Liverpool John Moores University. The reds go broadband 2000 - It was announced that Granada Media and Liverpool FC had agreed to form a new joint venture company, Liverpool FC Broadband, to exploit our new-media and commercial rights, including delayed online coverage of Premiership matches. God the champion 1993 - Robbie Fowler helped England Under-18’s to claim the European Championships for the ninth and final time to date. Tottenham Hotspur’s Darren Caskey struck the only goal of the game against Turkey at Nottingham Forest’s City Ground, with the England side also including future stars such as Sol Campbell, Julian Joachim, Gary Neville and Paul Scholes. On the same day, future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel played as Brazil lost a World Cup qualifier 2-0 in Bolivia. Javier misses out 2004 - Future red Javier Mascherano played as Argentina lost the Copa América Final. The game in Lima ended 2-2, but Brazil won the penalty shoot-out 4-2. Red farewells 1900 - James Kelso committed suicide back in his native Scotland, aged just 29. He only played one senior reds game, in a 4-0 Lancashire League defeat of Bury at Anfield in September 1892. 1938 – Inside-forward Willie Michael died. He joined the reds from Heart Of Midlothian in January 1895, scoring five times in 23 reds games before returning to Tynecastle in May 1897. A new case for Jimmy 1991 - Ex-reds midfield dynamo Jimmy Case joined Third Division Bournemouth from Southampton on a free transfer. He was a virtual ever-present in his one season with the Cherries, before joining Halifax Town on a free transfer in May 1992. Young future reds on target 2002 - Fernando Torres bagged a brace as Spain Under-19’s reached the Final of the European Championships in Norway, courtesy of their 3-2 defeat of Slovakia in Drammen. On the same day, future reds Head of Opposition Analysis Chris Davies played for Wales Under-19’s as they lost 4-1 to Scotland in a friendly. 2003 – Daniel Agger converted a penalty for Denmark Under-20’s as they lost a shoot-out 5-4 to the USA in the NI Milk Cup third place play-off in Northern Ireland, after the match had ended 1-1. Partridge claims bronze 1999 - Richie Partridge featured as the Republic of Ireland Under-18’s beat Greece 1-0 in Sweden to claim third place in the European Championship Finals. 1996 - Michael Owen played in the same tournament as England drew 1-1 with Italy in a group game France, with Gérard Houllier taking charge of France, with Christian Damiano as they beat Portugal 1-0. On the move 1927 – Future reds outside-right Danny McRorie joined Stenhousemuir from Airdrieonians, having struck five times in eight League games for the Diamonds. 1996 - Future reds loanee keeper Paul Jones joined Stockport County from Wolverhampton Wanderers for £60,000. He appeared 66 times for County before following boss Dave Jones to Southampton for £900,000 a year later. 2011 – Future keeper Andy Lonergan joined Leeds United for the first time from Preston North End, playing 38 times. He became captain that season, moving on to Bolton Wanderers in July 2012. 2017 – Diogo Jota joined Wolverhampton Wanderers on loan from Club Atlético de Madrid, netting eighteen times in 46 games before signing on permanently in July 2018 for a reported €14m. 2018 – Ex-reds forward Jerome Sinclair joined Sunderland on loan from Watford, scoring twice in nineteen games for the Black Cats. 2021 - Fernando Torres was appointed Head Coach of Club Atlético de Madrid’s Under-19's side, remaining in that role until taking charge of their B team in June 2024. Also in international action 1925 - Forward Jimmy Walsh appeared for an England side that beat Australia 2-0 in an FA Tour game in Melbourne. 1976 - Future red Avi Cohen played in the Olympics for Israel as they lost 4-1 to Brazil in the Quarter-final in Toronto. 1986 – Future red Stig Inge Bjørnebye featured for Norway Under-16’s as they shared a goalless draw with Finland in a tournament game in Hungary. 2014 – Future red Marko Grujić played as Serbia Under-19’s beat Bulgaria 1-0 in a European Championship Finals group game in Hungary. 2021 – Alexis Mac Allister played for Argentina Under-23’s as they beat Egypt 1-0 in the Olympics in Japan, while fellow future red Wataru Endō appeared for the host nation in their 2-1 defeat of Mexico in Saitama.

Milan on target again 2004 - Milan Baroš scored in his sixth consecutive international, grabbing a brace as the Czech Republic beat future red Christian Poulsen’s Denmark 3-0 in the Quarter-final of the European Championships in Porto. KHR on target 1994 - Future red Karl-Heinz Riedle bagged his final international goal while winning his 41st cap in Germany’s 3-2 World Cup defeat of South Korea in Dallas, to finish top of their group. Also at the World Cup 2010 – Future red Joe Cole won his 56th and final cap as England lost 4-1 to Germany in the Round of Sixteen in Bloemfontein with ex-red David James playing for the 53rd and last time. Steven Gerrard, Glen Johnson, future red James Milner and ex-red Emile Heskey all also featured, while Javier Mascherano and Maxi Rodríguez both played in Argentina’s 3-1 defeat of Mexico at the same stage in Johannesburg. 2018 – Future reds Alisson Becker and Xherdan Shaqiri and ex-red Philippe Coutinho all featured in group games in Russia as both sides progressed from the same group. 2006 - Xabi Alonso, Luis García and future red Fernando Torres all featured as Spain lost 3-1 to France in the Second Round of the World Cup Finals in Hanover. 1990 - John Barnes, Steve McMahon and future red Mark Wright all played as England beat Belgium 1-0 in Bologna to reach the Quarter-final. 1998 - Stig Inge Bjørnebye and Øyvind Leonhardsen both featured in Norway’s 1-0 defeat by Italy in Marseille in the Second Round. On the same day, future reds goalkeeping coach Cláudio Taffarel played for Brazil for the first time since signing for Galatasaray three days earlier. 1991 – Taffarel featured in a friendly as Argentina held the Brazilians to a 1-1 draw in Curitiba. Hamberg for the youngsters 2007 - It was announced that Piet Hamberg would take over as Academy Technical Manager in July. The former Ajax player joined from Grasshoppers of Zurich. Rafael Benítez said, “We have had some very good reports about Piet and he will bring great experience to the new role.” However, he left this role after just two years. 2019 – Centre-half Sepp van den Berg joined the reds from PEC Zwolle for an initial £1.3m, so far making four senior appearances. Heading West 1944 - Right-back Alf West died. He struck six times in 141 reds games across two spells at Anfield prior to the First World War, first arriving from Barnsley St. Peter’s in November 1903 for £500. He helped us to the Second Division championship in 1905 and our second League title a year later, joining Reading in June 1909, becoming their club captain but he only stayed for a season before returning to Anfield in May 1910. He only played five times in this second spell before joining Notts County in July 1911. 2023 – Liverpool-born centre-half Max Thompson died. He became the club’s youngest ever player in May 1974, aged seventeen years and 129 days, standing in for John Toshack four days after the FA Cup had been won in 1974, having only turned pro four months earlier. He only made one more senior appearance, moving on to Blackpool for £80,000 in February 1978. Redders starts out 1990 - Jamie Redknapp signed as a professional for Bournemouth, two days after his seventeenth birthday. He only made 21 senior appearances for the Cherries before becoming Kenny Dalglish’s last signing as reds boss for £350,000 in January 1991. Ins and outs 1999 - It was announced that Sammy Lee was considering quitting Anfield to become Assistant Manager to new Sheffield United boss Adrian Heath. Fortunately, the move fell through, and Sammy remained at Anfield for another five years. It was also revealed that Paul Ince was available for transfer for a fee of £1m. He moved on to Middlesbrough a month later. Meanwhile, the Department of Employment granted work permits for Vladimír Šmicer and Stéphane Henchoz, ahead of their official signings. 2014 – Sammy was announced as Assistant Manager of Brighton & Hove Albion, to be working under Sami Hyypiä. However, he changed his mind, joining Southampton just two days later. Dioufy in the top ten 2002 – El-Hadji Diouf was named as one of ten candidates for the Adidas Golden Ball Trophy, awarded to the most valuable player at the World Cup. The nominees were selected by the Technical Study Group of FIFA, with the top three to be selected by representatives of the media. One of the voters, ex-French boss Aimé Jacquet, said, “His position in the ten nominees is a symbol of this World Cup. I am very impressed by him. He played in France last season and was very good.” Management moves 1997 - Nigel Spackman was appointed Manager of Sheffield United. He was in charge for just eight months before he resigned over the sale of their top players as they headed towards the First Division play-offs. 2023 – Chris Davies was appointed Senior Assistant Coach of Tottenham Hotspur, although he only stayed in north London for a year. He had previously spent three years working under Brendan Rodgers. 1999 - Roy Hodgson resigned as Manager of Internazionale, after just three unbeaten matches of his second spell in charge at the San Siro. 2016 – Hodgson took charge of his last game with England as they lost 2-1 to Iceland in a European Championships Round of 16 tie in Nice. Final caps 2021 - Gini Wijnaldum won his last cap as a reds player as the Netherlands lost 2-0 to the Czech Republic in their Round of 16 tie in the European Championships in Budapest. Also in international action 2007 - Mark González turned out for Chile as they beat Ecuador 3-2 in a Copa América group game in Venezuela, while future red Alexander Doni kept goal in Brazil’s 2-0 defeat to Mexico. 2011 – Tom King featured for Australia Under-17’s as they drew 1-1 with Denmark in a World Championship Finals group game in Mexico. 2015 - Roberto Firmino won his last cap as a TSG 1899 Hoffenheim player in Brazil’s 1-1 draw with Paraguay before they were knocked out on penalties in their Copa América Quarter-final in Chile, with Philippe Coutinho scoring in the shoot-out. He played 126 times for the Harriers in the next three seasons. 2004 - Forward Jon Newby rejoined Bury on a free transfer from Huddersfield Town, after failing to score in his fifteen games for the Terriers. He bagged just five goals in 51 games in this spell at Gigg Lane. 2013 – Defender Gareth Roberts signed for Bury, having been released by Derby County. He was made club captain but only played thirteen times before being released the following January. 2014 – American centre-half Zak Whitbread joined Derby County from Leicester City on a free transfer, after a successful loan spell at Pride Park. He struck once in fifteen outings in total for the Rams before joining Shrewsbury Town on a free in October 2015. 2022 – Midfielder João Teixeira signed for Umm Salal in the Qatar Stars League, scoring five times in 22 appearances in his one season. Meanwhile, keeper Dean Bouzanis joined Reading, playing eight senior games in his first campaign with the Royals. 2023 - Lawrence Vigouroux signed for Burnley, though he has yet to make a first-team appearance. Willkommen Jürgen 2015 - Jürgen Klopp was appointed reds boss following the sacking of Brendan Rodgers. He led us to UEFA Champions League glory in Madrid, our first League title in thirty years, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, two League Cups and the FA Community Shield, generating a great rapport with the crowd before leaving in May 2024. On the same day, the departures of Chris Davies, Glen Driscoll, Gary McAllister and Sean O’Driscoll from the backroom staff were all announced. All sitting comfortably 1994 - Neil Ruddock scored the first goal in front of the new all-seater Kop, as we beat Aston Villa 3-2, with Robbie Fowler bagging a brace. Guy Whittingham and ex-red Steve Staunton struck for the visitors as Jamie Redknapp reached a century of reds outings. Off the mark 1921 - Harry Beadles struck the first of his six reds goals as we drew 1-1 at Preston North End in a top-flight encounter. Right-half Francis Checkland played his fifth and final reds game that day, with Preston’s late equaliser coming from the spot from future red Archie Rawlings. 1949 – Full-back Ray Lambert bagged the first of his two reds goals, scoring from the spot in our 2-0 defeat of Middlesbrough at Anfield, with Jimmy Payne also netting. Jimmy’s treble 1930 – Jimmy Smith scored a hat-trick as we thumped Everton 5-0 in a Lancashire Senior Cup Second Round tie at Anfield, with Gordon Hodgson and Tom Bradshaw also scoring. Most recently 2023 – We drew 2-2 at Brighton & Hove Albion, with Samon Adringa putting the Seagulls in front before Mohamed Salah bagged a first-half brace, including one from the spot. He had been in charge for just two games, both of which were lost, and was replaced by Denis Smith. 1997 - Jan Mølby was sacked as Manager of Swansea City, his first management role, despite only losing sixteen of his eighty games in charge, and only just missing out on promotion in his one full season at the Vetch Field. Future red Alex Manninger played for Austria Under-21’s in their 4-1 European Championships qualifying defeat in Sweden on the same day. 2019 – Sepp van den Berg scored his last goal for the Dutch Under-19’s, his only one as a reds player, in their 5-0 trouncing of Moldova in a European Championships qaulfiier in Latvia. 2016 – Daniel Sturridge scored in England’s 20 defeat of Malta in a World Cup qualifier at Wembley. Jordan Henderson, Sadio Mané and Andy Robertson also played in qualifiers that day. Future reds Academy keeper Kai McKenzie-Lyle scored a header on his debut for Guyana as they lost a Caribbean Cup qualifier 3-2 in Suriname. 2010 – Jonjo Shelvey converted a penalty as England Under-19’s thumped Albania 6-1 in a European Championships qualifier in Belgium, with Andre Wisdom also featuring. David N’Gog netted for France Under-21’s as they beat Turkey 2-0 in a friendly in Troyes, while future red Jordan Henderson bagged his first goal at the same level as England beat Romania 2-1 in the first leg of their European Championships Play-off at Carrow Road, with future red Daniel Sturridge also featuring. On the same day, Luis Suárez struck a hat-trick that included a penalty, his final goals as an Ajax player, as Uruguay trounced Indonesia 7-1 in a friendly in Jakarta. John Arne Riise was booked and also grabbed his last goal while with Roma as Norway won a Euro 2012 qualifier 2-1 in Cyprus, with ex-red Robbie Keane scoring from the spot as the Republic of Ireland lost 3-2 to Russia in another qualifier in Dublin. JAR off 1999 – Future red John Arne Riise was dismissed as Norway Under-21’s lost a European Championships qualifier 2-1 in Latvia, with Frode Kippe also in action. 1997 – Future reds Vegard Heggem and Frode Kippe both featured for the Under-21’s in their 3-1 defeat of South Africa in Oslo. International reds galore 2005 - A whole host of reds featured in World Cup qualifiers, with Peter Crouch winning his first cap as a reds player in England’s 1-0 defeat of Austria at Old Trafford, and Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard, future reds Joe Cole and Christian Poulsen and ex-red Michael Owen all also in action. Djibril Cissé struck as France drew 1-1 in future red Philip Degen’s Switzerland, with ex-red El-Hadji Diouf on target as Senegal beat a Mali side that included Momo Sissoko and Djimi Traoré 3-0 in Dakar. 2004 – Darren Potter and future reds Daniel Agger, Alberto Aquilani, Ramon Calliste, Scott Carson, Stewart Downing, Glen Johnson, Gary O’Neil and Jermaine Pennant all played in European Championships qualifiers at Under-21’s level, with future red James Milner netting his first goal at this level. 2007 - Péter Gulácsi and Krisztián Németh both played for Hungary Under-19’s as they trounced Kazakhstan 6-0 in a European Championships qualifier in Szekesfehervar, with Németh winning his first cap at this level as a red. 2011 – Gulácsi skippered Hungary Under-21’s in their 2-1 European Championships qualifying defeat in Turkey. Charlie Adam and future red Mohamed Salah were also in international action that day. 2015 – Sheyi Ojo, Jordan Rossiter and future red Dominic Solanke all played as England Under-19’s won a European Championships qualifier 2-0 in Macedonia. Mamadou Sakho and ex-reds Javier Mascherano and Krisztián Németh also featured for their countries on the same day. 2021 – Ex-red Danny Ward scored an own goal as Wales drew 2-2 with the Czech Republic in a World Cup qualifier in Prague, with both Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah captaining their countries to victories in World Cup action. Owen Beck, Morgan Boyes, Neco Williams, future reds Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch, and ex-reds Joe Allen, Ki-Jana Hoever and Harry Wilson all also featured in internationals. Joe honoured 2012 – Reds midfielder Joe Allen was named Player of the Year and Club Player of the Year for 2011/12 at the FAW Awards, based on his time with Swansea City and the national side. Jimmy’s death 1908 – Forward Jimmy Stott died in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He signed from Middlesbrough in August 1893, netting fourteen times in seventeen games as we won the Second Division title in our first League season, moving on to Grimsby Town in July 1894. Other reds games 1988 – We lost 1-0 at Luton Town, with Mick Harford bagging one of his seven goals against the reds. 1977 – Kenny Dalglish and David Fairclough netted as we beat Chelsea 2-0 at Anfield. 1973 – We drew a League Cup Second Round tie 2-2 at West Ham United. Peter Cormack put us in front before ex-red Ted MacDougall equalised. Steve Heighway restored our lead, but Pop Robson levelled with one of his five strikes past us. 1966 – Fulham held us to a 2-2 draw in L4. Geoff Strong scored inside the first minute, but Allan Clarke bagged the first two of his seven goals against us, with Ian St. John completing the scoring before the break. 1960 – We won a Second Division encounter 2-1 at Lincoln City as Roger Hunt nabbed a brace. 1904 – We beat Barnsley 2-0 in a Second Division fixture at Oakwell. Bobby Robinson had a penalty saved but converted the rebound, with John Carlin also on target. In opposition 1938 – Ex-reds reserves centre-half Matt O’Mahoney won his only cap for Northern Ireland as they lost 2-0 to Scotland in the British International Championships at Windsor Park. Andy Beattie, who guested for the reds during the war and later spent some time on our backroom staff, and Bill Shankly were both on the winning side. O’Mahoney also won six caps for the south of Ireland.
