Gerard Houllier

Recommended Posts

I loved houllier when he was here, but if anything the years have made me regard him less fondly. He won some cups, but in hindsight it wasn't really that much of a revolution of what came before, when you factor in the quality of the football we played. He took some strides forward on some low hanging fruits from the Evans era and strides back in others for a net gain of some cup wins.

The actual revolution of the club into a side with a modern footballling identity is more a credit to Rafa.

I liked Gerard Houllier and he delivered trophies.

Though looking back, rather than being a particularly innovative foreign manager he did an old school job of shoring up our defence and making us hard to beat.

Like a Gallic Sean Dyche, just with more chats to fyds.

He gave us some self-respect back when we were at an all-time low, and he gave us Sami Hyypia. 2000-2001 was the most fun season ever. Hard to believe that was almost 20 years ago, at the time it seemed the corner had been turned.

Think he's unfair to criticise him for not being something else. he was who he was. He won stuff, a lot of the football was awful, but he won things, and as above, made us respected again.

Rafa probably wouldn't have happened if those foundations hadn't been laid.

We played good football in 2001 and 2002 wasn’t bad either. It was dreadful after though

I remember people saying that it might take many years for his work at the academy to be realised. Not much came of it as I recall.

His signings were hit and miss.

Just had a flashback to donating money to Duncan Oldham @ Koptalk buy flowers for his wife. The b*****d made off with most of the the cash, Oldham not Houllier. What a time.

Hahaha. Mad how many people fell for Koptalk's s***e.

I loved Houllier. 2001 was amazing. I was gutted when he left but I knew it was for the best.

Houllier didn’t make Liverpool great again

He had Owen and Gerrard and carragher delivered to him on a plate and after a couple of great signings in 99 failed to identify the right players to bring in and failed to really achieve a way of playing that could take us to the next level

He did some good things and 2001 was memorable but we had fallen a long way behind Utd and Arsenal by 2004

f***ing hell you grinch. Do you remember 1999? You know in the 8 seasons from 1993-2000 we won 1 League Cup & that was it?

He took a miserable side and got us winning stuff & got our respectability back

Not great, but respectable. He won a European trophy, and two more cups to match. Actually, f*** that, it was great.

And I'll be damned if we didn't go and win an even bigger one in 2005, regardless of how far behind we were.

Seems odd not to recognise his part in making us respectable and respected again after what had gone before. Give credit where it's due. Top man.

The last two years were dreck and he broke Harry Kewell.

Probably broke Owen too after hearing how he was pressured to play in preseason.

BUT he did get us back at the top(ish) table but I always feel that had Thommo got the whole of 2002 we might have caught Arsenal.

I can see why he’s liked and maybe revered by some, I’ve had some of the nights of my life around going out to watch the treble side but on reflection I think he’s given the respect he’s due.

Great is pushing it though

And coming in to the dressing room after Istanbul?

I only remember Gerard fondly. Gave me my first experience of a Liverpool trophy win, winning at Old Trafford and being able to defend a corner.

And coming in to the dressing room after Istanbul?

Didn't Rafa say that he basically invited himself in?

Houllier was proper weird about Rafa and Istanbul but I think it was mostly just born of frustration at how things ended for him. I reckon Rafa was slyly ok with Hodgson proving to be s***e and Rodgers has pretty much gone on record to say he didn't want Klopp to do better than him. Not everyone is a Kenny.

As others have said, 2001 was a great ride and taken as a whole probably gave me more pleasure than any season since we last won the league. b******s to any 'He just made us hard to beat' revisionism, at the time it was just mental fun.

Impossible to say whether Rafa would or wouldn't have happened but winning those trophies and qualifying for the Champions League defo didn't make us less attractive to him.

Without looking back at the fixtures, I know that the run that started with us losing to Leeds on Good Friday was f***ing brilliant.

He did offer Jurgen to move into his house.

Remember after we beat them at Anfield hom giving it the 'He's a good tenant, he keeps the place tidy' patronising, unfunny s***e the shiny toothed prick.
