I think what may be lost in the panic here is that we are not in such bad shape.

Lyon are sort of running away with the group and Debreceni haven't won. It will be down to us and Fiorentina and I can see us beating them at Anfield, and we'll beat Debreceni again. It will be down to what we do against Lyon in France.

They are good, but with the chips on the line, I know we'll do well. We've dug ourselves out of deeper holes than this.

3 games, 3 wins sees us through. Although 2 are away

not necessarily, three teams can end up with 12 points. we probably need a better result against fiorentina than their 2-0 win or a better result against lyon than their 1-0 win.

three 1-0 wins might not see us through, unless lyon do us a favour by taking points from fiorentina

We were in the same position the year before last after losing horribly to Marseille at home (one of the worst performances I've ever seen from a Liverpool side) having to win our last three. We thrashed Marseille away after losing to them at home.

Doubt we'll do that to Lyon who are a much better side but if Torres and Gerrard are fit I believe we'll do it; we have been spoilt in the Champions League under Rafa though, so if we miss out this year I'll be disappointed but I'll get over it.

I think having played both sides that Lyon are much the better of the two teams, our loss in Italy was far more disappointing with the team we had out. I will be disappointed if Lyon don't at least draw with Fiorentina.

I'm looking forward to the Thursday night and Sunday afternoon kick-offs already.

yep. lyon are a good side. i can see them doing pretty well in europe this season, although they're defence might see them unstuck.

think they had loads of injuries though, so looked weaker in defence than they usually are

Other than financial implications (which I'd rather not to have to factor into my football views, however unrealistic that may be), I won't lose too much sleep over failing to qualify. It's embarassing, but it didn't seem to hold Utd back when they didn't get out of the group a few years back- it's like an early-round, unexpected defeat in the FA Cup - it doesn't make me happy, but you deal with it and get on.

If there's one thing that even the most hardened anti-Rafa commentator has to admit, it's that he has done brilliantly in Europe - it is even used as a stick to beat him with, bizarrely; so one season where we don't do as well should not be held against him, there should be no argument that he hasn't earned that leeway - unless you're a hypocrite with an agenda.

Agree with this.

On the plus side of going out we avoid two tedious ties against Chelsea and there would be some immense trips in a competition we'd be big favourites to win. I obviously want us to go through but if we go out we go out.
