    YNWA is number one 1963 - “You'll Never Walk Alone” by Gerry & The Pacemakers reached number one in the UK singles chart. It stayed there for four weeks, before being replaced by The Beatles’ “She Loves You”. Four for Fred 1914 - Fred Pagnam scored four goals as we thumped Tottenham Hotspur 7-2 in our First Division encounter at Anfield. Jackie Sheldon added a brace, with our scoring completed by Billy Banks. This was Spurs’ hundredth League defeat as they reached a century of away games in the League. We have also twice visited White Hart Lane on this day in history, losing on both occasions. 1984 - We lost a League Cup Third Round fixture 1-0, with Clive Allen on target after just six minutes. Michael Robinson made his 52nd and last reds appearance in this game. 1992 – We lost a League game 2-0. Nayim struck a spectacular volley before future red Neil Ruddock headed in from a corner. Rafa’s century 2006 - Rafael Benítez named an unchanged side for the first time in exactly a century of games as we beat Girondins de Bordeaux 3-0 to secure a place in the knock-out phase of the Champions League with two games remaining, thanks to a Luis García brace and a first reds goal of the season from Steven Gerrard. Fernando Menegazzo was sent off for the visitors, with Istanbul hero Vladimír Šmicer confined to the stands due to injury. Trent’s ton 2020 – Right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold played his hundredth League game for the reds as we came from behind to beat West Ham United 2-1 behind closed doors at Anfield. Mohamed Salah equalised from the spot before the break after Pablo Fornals had opened the scoring. Diogo Jota struck the late winner. Also recently 2015 – We came from behind to win 3-1 at Chelsea. Ramires opened the scoring for the home side early on, with Philippe Coutinho equalising in first-half stoppage time. Coutinho put us ahead before substitute Christian Benteke completed the scoring. 1953 – Roy Bentley bagged the last three of his five goals past us as we lost 5-2 at Chelsea, with Sammy Smyth nabbing a brace for the reds. Ken Armstrong and Frank Blunstone were also on target for the Blues as centre-half Joe Maloney turned out for the reds for the twelfth and final time. 2010 – Maxi Rodríguez bagged the only goal of our trip to Bolton Wanderers late on, with boss Roy Hodgson declaring it to be a “famous victory”. 2007 - Steven Gerrard netted in his third consecutive game to win the game, a minute after Darren Purse’s headed equaliser, with Nabil El-Zhar bagging his only reds strike from distance as we beat Cardiff City 2-1 in a Carling Cup Fourth Round tie at Anfield, with Robbie Fowler returning with the Bluebirds. Teenage centre-back Jack Hobbs made his first start in this game, while Argentine winger Sebastián Leto played his fourth and final reds game. First and last 1936 - Right-half Harry Eastham made his reds bow in our 2-1 First Division defeat of Arsenal at Anfield, with Jack Balmer and Fred Howe on the scoresheet and Alf Kirchen netting the first of his four goals past us. He struck four goals in 68 reds appearances, with his career being interrupted by the Second World War. Outside-left Alf Hanson reached a century of League appearances for the reds that day. 1931 – We lost 3-0 at Sheffield United as Jimmy Dunne nabbed one of his nine goals past us, Jack Pickering scoring the first of his five and George Green also scoring. Forward Jimmy Smith appeared for the 62nd and final time. Seeing off Sion 1996 - We beat Swiss side Sion 6-3 at home after falling two behind, to progress to the Third Round of the European Cup Winners’ Cup 8-4 on aggregate, with John Scales making his 94th and last reds appearance. No other team has scored more at Anfield in European competition. Robbie Fowler grabbed a brace, while Steve McManaman, Stig Inge Bjørnebye, John Barnes and Patrik Berger also struck that night. Forward Frédéric Chassot netted twice for the visitors, with midfielder Christophe Bonvin also on target. Losing to the Mancs We have twice faced Manchester United on this day in history, losing both meetings. 1964 - We were beaten 2-0 in a First Division game at Anfield, thanks to goals from Paddy Crerand and David Herd. 1990 - We lost a League Cup Third Round tie 3-1 at Old Trafford, with Ray Houghton grabbing our late consolation. Steve Bruce, Mark Hughes, with one of his nine goals past us, and Lee Sharpe had netted for the home side. We have also twice faced Manchester City on this day, although we won one of these encounters. 1942 - Cyril Done netted a brace with Willie Fagan also on the scoresheet as we secured a 3-1 Wartime League victory at home. 1903 - We lost 3-2 in a top-flight meeting at Hyde Road when Arthur Goddard and Jack Parkinson struck, our first ever defeat to them after nine previous meetings. Sandy Turnbull struck the first of his six goals against the reds, Billy Gillespie one of his six and Frank Booth also on target. On record 1995 - The Anfield crowd was recorded for “Three Lions” by Baddiel & Skinner And The Lightning Seeds as we lost 1-0 against Danes Brøndby IF to crash out of the UEFA Cup at the Second Round stage after a goalless first leg. Ian Rush had an effort ruled offside after just seventy seconds, with defender Dan Eggen heading the only goal of the tie with twelve minutes left. Joy against the Rokerites We have faced Sunderland three times on this day in history, without being beaten. 1925 - We were held to a 2-2 top-flight draw at Anfield when Harry Chambers and Dick Forshaw struck for the reds. Jock McNab put through his own net while outside-right Cyril Oxley made his reds bow. Dave Halliday grabbed the first of his thirteen strikes in just twelve outings against the reds. 1959 - We also drew at Roker Park in a Second Division match, with Roger Hunt grabbing our goal. 1981 - Our most recent meeting on this day ended in a 2-0 victory on Wearside, with Graeme Souness and Terry McDermott on the scoresheet. Also recently 2012 – We lost 3-1 at home to Brendan Rodgers’ former side Swansea City to crash out of the League Cup at the Fourth Round stage. Chico Flores headed the visitors in front. Substitute Steven Gerrard hit the post before Nathan Dyer doubled the Swans’ lead. Luis Suárez headed a goal back, but Jonathan de Guzmán completed the scoring for the Welsh outfit. Forward Samed Yeşil played his second and final senior reds game. Cottage despair 2009 - Jamie Carragher and Philipp Degen were both sent off as we lost 3-1 at Roy Hodgson’s Fulham. Fernando Torres volleyed in an equaliser after Bobby Zamora’s opener. Erik Nevland restored the home side’s lead, with Clint Dempsey sealing the points. 1980 - 1950’s wing-half Bobby Campbell was sacked as Manager of Fulham. He had been in charge for nearly four years, keeping them in the Second Division until they were relegated earlier that year. 1998 – Tony Cottee bagged the only goal of our trip to Leicester City, one of his eight past us, with Jason McAteer dismissed late on. Reds birthdays 1906 – Forward Ted Crawford was born in Filey, Yorkshire. He signed from Halifax Town in 1932, bagging four goals in eight games before joining Clapton Orient in July 1933, for whom he struck 73 times in 212 Division Three South games. 2002 – Midfielder Tyler Morton was born in Wirral. He joined the club in 2009, signing a new contract in January 2021. He made his senior bow from the bench in a League Cup Third Round win at Norwich City in October 2021, appearing nine times in total during 2021/22. 2006 – Defender Lucas Pitt was born. Hailing from Formby, he signed his first professional contract in April 2024, having been at the Academy since the age of five. White wrong 2006 - Noel White resigned from the Board after leaking critical stories of Rafael Benítez’s rotation policy to the press. He had been on the Board for twenty years, including a spell as Chairman between 1990 and 1991. On the move again 1983 - Former reserves striker Mike Newell joined Wigan Athletic from Crewe Alexandra on a free transfer. He struck 35 times in 92 games for the Latics, before moving on to Luton Town in January 1986. 2011 - El-Hadji Diouf signed for Doncaster Rovers, after his contract with Blackburn Rovers was terminated by mutual consent two months earlier. He bagged six goals in 23 outings for Donny. 2014 – Czech defender Jakub Sokolík re-joined Southend United on loan, playing just twice in this second spell. For Nicholson 1966 - We took part in a match in aid of The Late John Nicholson Memorial Fund, beating a Doncaster Rovers Representative XI 4-3 at Belle Vue. Geoff Strong bagged a brace, while Bobby Graham and Gordon Milne also netted. First caps 1990 - Molde’s Øyvind Leonhardsen made his debut for Norway in their 6-1 friendly defeat of Cameroon in Oslo. Kongsvinger’s Stig Inge Bjørnebye also played. Future red Istvan Kozma also represented his country on that day as Hungary beat Cyprus 4-2 in a Euro 92 qualifier in Budapest. 2000 – Future red Alberto Aquilani won his first cap for Italy Under-16’s as they beat Portugal 2-1. 2014 – Ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper took charge of England Under-16’s for the first time, but they lost 1-0 to Wales in the Victory Shield in Bangor with young reds Ben Woodburn and Okera Simmonds facing each other. 2008 – Jack Robinson played for England Under-16’s for the only time as they beat Wales 1-0 in the Victory Shield in Llanelli, with Andre Wisdom also featuring. 2001 – Chris McGrath featured for the Irish Under-16’s as they lost a European Championships qualifier 2-0 to Spain in Latvia. Other reds games 1994 – We lost 2-1 at Queens Park Rangers. Trevor Sinclair opened the scoring for the Hoops before John Barnes equalised. Les Ferdinand then struck one of his six goals against the reds. 1972 – Leeds United held us to a 2-2 draw in our League Cup Fourth Round tie at Anfield. Kevin Keegan and John Toshack scored as Mick Jones netted one of his seven goals past us, with Peter Lorimer also on target. 1970 – Tommy Smith converted a penalty before Alun Evans struck as we beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-0 in L4. One of the linesmen was injured midway through the first half, having to be replaced by a referee who was amongst the crowd. 1931 – We lost 3-0 at Sheffield United as Jimmy Dunne nabbed one of his nine goals past us, Jack Pickering scoring the first of his five and George Green also scoring. 1908 – We beat Newcastle United 2-1 at Anfield, thanks to goals from Ronald Orr and Jack Cox, with George Wilson bagging one of his five goals past us. 1896 – George Allan netted the only goal of our visit to West Bromwich Albion’s old Stoney Lane ground in the first minute. New deals 2003 - Jamie Carragher and Chris Kirkland both signed new contracts until 2007 and 2009, respectively. Carra remained at the club until the summer of 2013, while Kirkland was sold to Wigan Athletic in October 2006. 2011 – Left-back Jack Robinson signed a new contract. He became the club’s youngest ever player in May 2010, aged sixteen years and 250 days. He made just eleven senior reds appearances before moving permanently to Queens Park Rangers in August 2014.     The reds start out 1892 - We played our first ever competitive fixture, trouncing Higher Walton 8-0 in a Lancashire League fixture at Anfield, in front of a crowd of just 200. Jock Smith, Joe McQue and James Cameron all netted braces, with Malcolm McVean and John McBride also notching. West Derby-born Joe Pearson was the only non-Scot in this ‘Team of the Macs’, playing his only reds game. 1898 - We stepped out in red for the first time, as we beat The Wednesday 4-0 at Anfield, with centre-half Alex Raisbeck making his debut. We had played in blue and white quartered shirts until then. Left-half Bill Goldie bagged his first reds goal with Hugh Morgan, John Walker and Tommy Robertson also on the scoresheet that day. 1952 - We also played the Owls, beating Sheffield Wednesday 2-0 at Hillsborough thanks to goals from Kevin Baron and Billy Liddell. 2008 – Steve Cooper joined the Academy as an Under-12’s Coach, moving up to becoming Academy Manager in July 2011. He moved on to the FA two years later. Happy birthday Le Ex-Boss 1947 - Gérard Houllier was born in Therouanne in France. He was appointed as joint Manager alongside Roy Evans in July 1998, taking over sole charge four months later. He led us to the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, two League Cups, UEFA Super Cup and FA Charity Shield before leaving by mutual consent in May 2004. He then went on to lead Olympique Lyonnais to two straight League titles. Other birthdays 1937 - Left-half Tommy Leishman was born in Stenhousemuir. He had won the Scottish Cup with St. Mirren, signing for £10,000 in November 1949. He helped us back to the First Division in 1962, although he then only made eleven top-flight appearances before returning north of the border, to Hibernian, in January 1963 after a total of seven goals in 118 reds games, including our first ever League Cup strike. 2002 – Forward Layton Stewart was born in Liverpool. He has been with the reds since the age of seven, signing as a professional in February 2020, making his senior bow off the bench in our League Cup tie against Derby County in November 2022. 2003 – Keeper Harvey Davies was also born in Liverpool. He has been with the reds since the age of nine, featuring on the bench in four UEFA Champions League fixtures during 2020/21 and the following campaign. 1985 - Former second choice keeper Scott Carson was born in Whitehaven. He made just nine senior reds appearances following his arrival from Leeds United for £750,000 in January 2005, but only managed to keep two clean sheets. He was sold to West Bromwich Albion for £3.25m in July 2008, after seasons on loan at first Charlton Athletic and then Aston Villa. 1964 - 1980’s Irish reserve midfielder Ken DeMange was born in Dublin. He never made a senior appearance while at Anfield, despite winning full international honours during that time. 1977 - Phil Brazier was born in Liverpool. The defender skippered us to victory in the FA Youth Cup in 1996. Derby stalemate 2022 – We shared a goalless draw with Everton at Goodison Park with both sides hitting the woodwork. Red departures 1958 – Scottish inside-forward Tom Miller died. He netted 56 times in 146 reds games after signing from Hamilton Academical for £400 in February 1912, including an appearance in the 1914 FA Cup Final. However, he is also remembered as being one of the players caught up in the Manchester United match-rigging scandal of 1915, whom he joined in September 1920.His brother John was on the reds books alongside him immediately after the First World War. 1966 - Centre-half John Nicholson died in a car crash, just one day after his thirtieth birthday. He signed with the reds as a professional in January 1957, but only played one senior game before joining Port Vale in August 1961, playing over 200 games for them. 1995 – Right-winger Alex Muir died. He signed from Lochgelly Violet in July 1947, the same club that Billy Liddell was signed from. He only played four senior games before joining South Liverpool in 1949. Bert at the wrong end 1969 – Ex-reds keeper Bert Slater put through his own net as we won a League Cup Second Round tie 2-1 at Watford, with Ian St. John bagging the winner, the club’s 5,000th goal in all competitions. Also recently 1988 - Our most recent game on this day came when Jan Mølby netted the only goal of our home fixture with Manchester United from the spot, with Nigel Spackman also hitting the woodwork. 1947 - We also entertained United, with Albert Stubbins on target in our 2-2 top-flight draw and Jack Balmer converting a penalty. Cyril Sidlow saved a spot-kick taken by United’s Jack Rowley. Stan Pearson bagged one of his eleven strikes past us, with Charlie Mitten netting one of his five. A goalscoring debut 1958 - Inside-forward Alan Banks scored on his reds debut as we thumped Brighton & Hove Albion 5-0 in a home Second Division fixture, with Alan Arnell nabbing a brace and Jimmy Harrower and right-back John Molyneux also netting. Outside-right Fred Morris also made his reds bow that day. 1960 - We also entertained the Seagulls, with Jimmy Harrower on target twice in a 2-0 victory. 1955 - Molyneux made his reds bow as we drew 3-3 at Blackburn Rovers. Alan Arnell struck a brace with Billy Liddell also on target for the reds. Eddie Crossan bagged a brace for the home side, with Bob Langton also on target. 1932 - Centre-half Tom ‘Tiny’ Bradshaw grabbed the first of his four reds goals in our 4-3 defeat at Newcastle United. Gordon Hodgson scored from the spot with Ted Crawford bagging his fourth and final reds goal, our 2,000th in top-flight football, as right-back Willie Steel put through his own net for one of the Geordies’ goals. Tommy Lang scored one of his four goals past us, with Jack Allen scoring the last of his five and Harry McMenemy also on the scoresheet. Razor’s ton 1977 - Ray Kennedy reached a century of League appearances for the reds, scoring the only goal very early on at Birmingham City. Robbo in charge 2018 – Left-back Andy Robertson was appointed captain of Scotland. On the same day, Jordan Henderson signed a new contract with the reds. Gems on their way 2001 - Liverpool agreed a deal to sign Le Havre’s two young gems, Anthony Le Tallec and Florent Sinama-Pongolle, for a combined £6m fee, although they would remain in France for another two years. Sinama-Pongolle bagged nine goals in 66 reds games, while his compatriot netted just once in 32 games, and neither remains with the club. Zico foiled 1983 - Phil Neal had a penalty saved, although we were still able to beat Nottingham Forest at Anfield thanks to an Ian Rush goal. We have faced Forest twice more on this day in history in the top flight. 1963 - Our City Ground encounter ended goalless, as we started this title-winning season with just three points from our opening four fixtures. 1985 - Ronnie Whelan bagged a brace as we won 2-0 at Anfield. Ironed out 1956 - We drew 1-1 at Upton Park in a Second Division meeting, with Billy Liddell on the scoresheet. Forward John Evans made his hundredth reds appearance in this game. Future Manchester United boss Frank O’Farrell struck for the home side. 1966 - Geoff Strong netted as we again held West Ham United to a draw in the East End, with Geoff Hurst on the scoresheet for the Irons, one of his nine goals against us. Tommy Smith reached a century of reds outings in this match. 1962 - Our other trip to face the Hammers on this day in history ended in defeat, with winger Tony Scott nabbing the only goal of the game. 2008 – Future reds First Team Coach Kevin Keen was appointed Caretaker Manager at West Ham for the second time after Alan Curbishley’s resignation. He was in charge for just one game, a 3-2 defeat at West Bromwich Albion before Gianfranco Zola took over. Starting off badly 1910 - We kicked off the season with a defeat, when Jimmy Stewart nabbed our consolation as Bradford City won 2-1 at Anfield. Reserves custodian Augustus Beeby had to step in between the sticks due to Sam Hardy’s damaged wrist. Final strike 1894 – Winger Patrick Gordon netted his eighth and final reds goal in our 3-3 top-flight draw at Burnley. Hugh McQueen and Harry Bradshaw also scored. Bad Bhoy 1895 – We faced Celtic for the first time in our history, winning an Anfield friendly 2-0 thanks to goals from George Allan and Frank Becton. Tommy Morrison from the visitors was sent off in the second half for dissent. Young reds 1999 - Steven Gerrard scored on his debut for England Under-21’s as they beat Luxembourg 5-0 in a European Championships qualifier at the Madejski Stadium in Reading. Jamie Carragher and future red Emile Heskey also started, while David Thompson came on as a substitute. On the same day, Frode Kippe scored in Norway Under-21’s 2-1 qualifying win over Greece, with future red John Arne Riise also in action. 2010 – Danny Wilson played for Scotland Under-21’s in their 1-1 European Championships qualifying draw in Belarus, while future red Daniel Sturridge scored as England won their qualifier at the same level 1-0 in Portugal, with fellow future red Jordan Henderson also featuring and future reds Christian Benteke and Simon Mignolet also in international action. 2011 – Wilson featured for the senior side for the fifth and final time as Scotland drew 2-2 with the Czech Republic in a Euro 2012 qualifier at Hampden Park, with Charlie Adam and ex-red Milan Baroš also in action. 2015 – Joe Gomez and Jordon Ibe both made their debuts for England Under-21’s as they beat USA Under-23’s 1-0 at Deepdale. Meanwhile, Gini Wijnaldum won his first senior cap for the Netherlands as a Newcastle United player in their 1-0 defeat by Iceland in a European Championships qualifier in Amsterdam. Divock Origi played for Belgium that day as they beat Bosnia-Herzegovina 3-1 in another qualifier in Brussels. 2021 – Josh Davidson debuted for England Under-17’s as they beat Romania 2-0 in a friendly in Poland. Recent internationals 2017 – Dejan Lovren featured in Croatia’s 1-0 World Cup qualifying defeat of Kosovo in Zagreb, while Gini Wijnaldum played as the Netherlands beat Bulgaria 3-1 in Amsterdam. Future red Xherdan Shaqiri and ex-red Péter Gulácsi also played in qualifiers that day. 2014 – Daniel Agger converted a penalty while winning the first cap of his second spell with Brøndby IF, as Denmark lost a friendly 2-1 to Turkey in Odense. Meanwhile, Roy Hodgson’s England beat Norway 1-0 at Wembley, with Jordan Henderson, Rickie Lambert, Raheem Sterling, Daniel Sturridge and future reds James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all featuring. Jordan Rossiter won his only cap for England Under-18’s as they beat the Netherlands 4-1 in Leigh, with future red Dominic Solanke also debuting at this level and Sheyi Ojo also in action. Craig Bellamy skippered Wales while winning his first cap on loan at Cardiff City from Manchester City in their 1-0 defeat in Montenegro, John Toshack’s last game in charge of his country. James Milner played for England for the first time since moving to Manchester City, with Steven Gerrard, Glen Johnson, Milan Jovanović, Martin Škrtel, future reds Christian Benteke, Ragnar Klavan and Xherdan Shaqiri, and ex-reds Xabi Alonso, Robbie Keane, Jari Litmanen, Carl Medjani, Nikolay Mihaylov and John Arne Riise also featuring in qualifiers that day. First and last caps 2004 - Xabi Alonso won his first cap as a reds player, and thirteenth to date, as Spain were held to a 1-1 draw by Scotland at the Estadio Ciutat de València, although the game was postponed after 59 minutes due to floodlight failure. This was the first ever senior international staged at this ground, with future red Fernando Torres captaining the side for the first time. Meanwhile, Bolo Zenden won his only cap while permanently with Middlesbrough as the Netherlands beat Liechtenstein 3-0 in Utrecht, with future red Dirk Kuyt winning his first cap. Future red Daniel Agger won his first Under-21’s cap as Denmark beat Ukraine 3-2 in Farum in a European Championships qualifier. Also in Under-21’s action that day were Darren Potter and future reds Ramon Calliste, Scott Carson, Stewart Downing, James Milner, Gary O’Neil and Jermaine Pennant. 1975 - David Johnson won his third cap, and final one as an Ipswich Town player, in England’s 2-1 European Championships qualifying win in Switzerland. Ray Clemence and Kevin Keegan both also played.     The first title 1901 – We won 1-0 at West Bromwich Albion to clinch our first League title, with inside-right Johnny Walker on target in the first half of our final game of the season against the already-relegated Baggies. A fife and drum band playing “The Conquering Hero” welcomed the team back into Liverpool. The plan was to lift Club Secretary Tom Watson shoulder high in celebration, but as the Liverpool Echo said, “No arms were long enough to grip his girth.” However, our two inter-war meetings with the Baggies both resulted in 2-1 defeats. 1922 - Harry Beadles nabbed our consolation at Anfield, with Howard Gregory bagging a brace for the Baggies. 1933 - Tom Bradshaw was on target at The Hawthorns, with forward Ted Crawford playing his eighth and last reds game. Billy Richardson scored one of his nine goals past us, with Jock Carter also on target. Nando’s last 2006 - Fernando Morientes scored his twelfth and final reds goal, which was our 300th against Aston Villa in all competitions. Unfortunately, this result helped Manchester United to claim their second League title. 1972 – We lost the second leg of the FA Youth Cup Final at Anfield 4-2 to Aston Villa, having already been beaten 1-0 in the first game. The reds included Brian Kettle and Phil Thompson. Testimonial for Shanks 1975 - A testimonial match for Bill Shankly was played at Anfield. Emlyn Hughes and Jimmy Case both bagged braces, with Alan Waddle and Tommy Smith also on target as the reds beat a Don Revie Select side 6-2. 1992 - We took part in another testimonial, drawing a benefit game for our former reserves forward Wayne Harrison 2-2 at Oldham Athletic. Don Hutchinson and Ronnie Rosenthal were on the scoresheet. Harrison had signed from Oldham for £250,000 in January 1985 but never made a senior reds appearance before he retired due to injury in the summer of 1991, aged just 23. Falling at the final hurdle 2010 – We were knocked out of the UEFA Europa League at the Semi-final stage on away goals by Club Atlético de Madrid, the third time in our history we had fallen foul of this rule in Europe. Alberto Aquilani opened the scoring just before the break with his second and final goal for the club, with the tie having to go into extra time. Yossi Benayoun scored his 29th and last reds goal early in the additional half hour, but Diego Forlán then bagged a crucial away goal, the last of his four past us. Philipp Degen played his thirteenth and final reds game. King Kenny starts out 1968 - Kenny Dalglish signed as a professional for Celtic. He helped them to four League titles, two Scottish Cups and a League Cup, bagging 167 goals in 322 games before moving to Anfield for £440,000 in August 1977. 2018 – Roberto Firmino signed a new contract, having scored fifty times in 140 reds games to that point. 1957 – Full-back Allan Jones and winger Johnny Morrissey both signed pro terms with the reds. Morrissey struck six times in 37 outings before crossing the park to Everton for £10,000 in September 1962, for whom he scored fifty times in 314 appearances, helping them to two League titles. Wembley disappointment 1950 - We lost our second FA Cup Final, this time 2-0 to Arsenal with Reg Lewis scoring in each half, the last of his five strikes against us, despite the reds having beaten the Gunners twice in the League that season. It was to be another fifteen years before we finally won the famous trophy. We had to wear blue socks in this match, due to a mix-up over changing from the usual red ones to white, with neither side playing in their regular home strips. Off the mark 1995 – Steve Harkness struck the first of his three reds goals early on at Norwich City, with Robert Ullathorne equalising soon after. Ian Rush grabbed the winner as we won 2-1, with City on their way down to the Endsleigh League. Beating the Clarets We have defeated Burnley twice at Anfield on this day in history, without conceding a single goal. 1905 - Jack Cox, Robbie Robinson and Jack Parkinson were on the scoresheet.     Happy birthdays 1938 - Defender Gerry Byrne was born in Liverpool. He was the hero of our first FA Cup triumph in 1965 when he played for 117 minutes of the final against Leeds United at Wembley with a broken collar bone sustained in an early challenge by Bobby Collins. He also won two League titles and the FA Charity Shield in his eleven years at Anfield, making a total of 333 reds appearances and scoring four times. 1963 – Former First-team coach Steve Clarke was born in Saltcoats, Scotland. He was appointed in January 2011 following Kenny Dalglish’s return to the hot seat, signing a new three-year contract four months later. However, he left the club in June 2012 following Dalglish’s sacking. Triple debutants 1981 - Bruce Grobbelaar, Craig Johnston and new record signing Mark Lawrenson all made their official reds debuts in our 1-0 defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers as we kicked off another season. Midfielder Mike Matthews bagged the only goal of the game. Debuting against the Trotters 2009 - Sotirios Kyrgiakos played his first reds game as we came from behind twice to win 3-2 at Bolton Wanderers. Danny’s bow 2015 – We were beaten 3-0 at home by West Ham United, their biggest ever win at Anfield, with Philippe Coutinho sent off shortly after the break before Danny Ings made his reds bow from the bench. Mark Noble bagged the most recent of his three goals past us but was then dismissed for the visitors, a decision that was later rescinded. Manuel Lanzini and Diafra Sakho were also on target. Missing out at Wembley 2020 – Takumi Minamino scored his first reds goal after Pierre Aubameyang had put Arsenal in front in the FA Community Shield behind closed doors at Wembley. The game ended 1-1 after ninety minutes, with Arsenal winning the subsequent shoot-out 5-4. Rhian Brewster hit the bar with his penalty on what was his last game for the club, the only player to fail to score. In and out 2010 – Midfielder Raul Meireles signed from his hometown club Porto for £11.5m. We won the replay, making it as far as the Semi-final that season. 1956 – Geoff Twentyman bagged a brace as we drew 3-3 with Notts County in a Second Division fixture at Anfield, with Louis Bimpson also on target. 1951 – We beat Burnley 3-1 in L4, with Albert Stubbins, Cyril Done and Billy Liddell all scoring. International bows 1990 - Karl-Heinz Riedle won his first cap as an S.S. Lazio player as world champions West Germany drew 1-1 with Portugal in a friendly in Lisbon. Fellow future red Jari Litmanen also represented his country that day, as Finland drew 1-1 in a friendly with Czechoslovakia in Kuusankoski. 2012 – Jerome Sinclair made his debut for England Under-17’s as they lost 3-2 to Italy in a friendly in Burton, with Sheyi Ojo also featuring. Also in international action 2007 - Mamadou Sakho played for France Under-17’s as they beat Tunisia 3-1 in their World Championship Finals Round of 16 tie in South Korea. On the same day, fellow future red Nikola Sarić featured for Denmark Under-17’s in their 2-1 defeat by the Ukraine in the Syrenka Cup in Poland.

    Happy birthdays 1973 - Dietmar Hamann was born in Waldasson in Bavaria. He made a total of 283 appearances for the reds, scoring eleven times as he helped us to claim the Champions League, UEFA Cup, two FA Cups, two UEFA Super Cups, two League Cups and the FA Charity Shield after signing from Newcastle United for £8m in July 1999. He moved on to both Bolton Wanderers and Manchester City in a bizarre transfer saga in July 2006 to bring his Anfield career to a close. 1971 - Steve Harkness was born in Carlisle. He made his reds debut on his twentieth birthday, in our 1-0 League win over Queens Park Rangers at Anfield, when Dean Saunders struck his first reds goal. He went on to net three times in 139 games during nearly ten years at Anfield, before teaming up with Graeme Souness again at SL Benfica. 1986 – Forward Nabil El Zhar was born in Alès, France. He joined the reds in October 2006, striking just once in 32 outings before joining Spanish side Levante U.D. in August 2011. 1875 – Forward John Parkinson was born in Blackpool. He arrived from his hometown club in May 1899, but only played once before returning to the Seasiders in May 1900. Anfield thumpings 2022 – We secured our joint record top-flight victory when we trounced Bournemouth 9-0, also the joint Premier League best for any side. Luis Díaz and Harvey Elliott both struck early on, with Trent Alexander-Arnold also bagging inside the first half hour. Roberto Firmino also netted before Virgil van Dijk nodded in on the stroke of half time. Chris Mepham put through his own net before Firmino reached a century of reds goals. Fábio Carvalho nabbed his first goal for the club with Díaz adding the ninth. Midfielders Stefan Bajčetić and Bobby Clark both came off their bench to make their senior bows. 2017 – We beat Arsenal 4-0 at Anfield, with Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mané on target before the break. Mohamed Salah and Daniel Sturridge completed the scoring. Off the mark 2011 - Jordan Henderson and Charlie Adam both struck their first reds goals either side of a Martin Škrtel header as we beat Bolton Wanderers 3-1 at Anfield, with Ivan Klasnić bagging the visitors’ late consolation. Debutants galore 1984 - Paul Walsh scored just fourteen seconds into his Anfield debut as we kicked off our season against West Ham United. John Wark bagged a late brace to complete a 3-0 win. 1938 - Scottish forward Bill Kinghorn debuted as we beat Chelsea 2-1 at Anfield in another season opener. Phil Taylor struck both our goals that day. 1921 - Centre-forward Danny Shone and outside-left Fred Hopkin both made their reds bows in our 3-0 defeat at Sunderland in a season starter, with the reds missing a last-minute penalty. Charlie Buchan bagged a brace, two of his 21 strikes in 27 games against us, with Harry Martin also on target. 1932 - Ted Crawford bagged a brace on his debut as we thumped Wolverhampton Wanderers 5-1, with Gordon Hodgson bagging his 150th League goal, and Dave Wright and Gordon Gunson also on the scoresheet in our opening game of the season. Centre-half Tom ‘Tiny’ Bradshaw played his hundredth reds game that day. A new boss 1983 - Joe Fagan took charge of his first League game as we drew 1-1 at Wolverhampton Wanderers, with Ian Rush on the scoresheet as Graeme Souness played his 300th game for the club. Alan Kennedy conceded a very early penalty against Andy Gray, converted by Geoffrey Palmer, and did the same later in the season after he had moved to Everton. 1974 - We also faced Wolves, with Steve Heighway and John Toshack on target in our 2-0 win at Anfield. Alec Lindsay missed a penalty just three days after converting two in a 2-1 home defeat of Leicester City. Treble for Aldo 1988 - John Aldridge bagged a hat-trick as we beat Charlton Athletic 3-0 at Selhurst Park. Reds centuries 2008 – Dirk Kuyt bagged the only goal late on in his hundredth reds game as we beat Standard de Liège after extra time in the second leg of our Champions League qualifier at Anfield to reach the group stages. This was the hundredth goal we had struck in Europe under Rafael Benítez, while future red Milan Jovanović featured as a late substitute for the visitors. Off on loan 2003 - Right-back Markus Babbel joined Blackburn Rovers on loan, scoring three goals in 28 games. He had played 73 times for the reds, netting six times, and helping us to claim five trophies in 2001. 2013 – Moroccan winger Oussama Assaidi moved to Stoke City for the season, nabbing five goals in 25 outings. He had arrived at Anfield from SC Heerenveen for £2.4m a year earlier, failing to net in twelve reds games. 2015 – Mario Balotelli re-joined AC Milan on loan after just four goals in 28 outings in his debut season with the reds, although half of these appearances came from the bench. Derby disappointment We have failed to win any of our three encounters with Everton on this day over the years, all of which have been top-flight matches played at Goodison. 1949 - The game ended goalless. 1968 – Another goalless encounter, with Ian Callaghan making his 400th reds appearance. 1966 - We lost 3-1, with Tommy Smith nabbing our consolation. Sandy Brown bagged one of the Blues’ goals, becoming the first substitute to score in a derby. Alan Ball scored the first two of his eleven goals against the reds. Bye bye Sander 2001 - Sander Westerveld made his 103rd and final reds appearance as we lost 2-1 to Bolton Wanderers at the Reebok Stadium. He gifted Dean Holdsworth’s winner to the Trotters, the last of his four goals past us, after Emile Heskey had got us back into the game with an equaliser after Michael Ricketts had put the home side in front. Danny Murphy reached a century of reds outings that day. 2011 – Left-back Emiliano Insúa signed for Sporting Clube de Portugal after one goal in 62 reds games, having spent the previous season on loan with Galatasaray. Also recently 2016 – We drew 1-1 at Tottenham Hotspur as James Milner handed us the lead from the spot just before the break, with Danny Rose equalising. 2003 – We were held to a goalless draw at Anfield by Tottenham Hotspur with Michael Owen having a goal disallowed. The king dethroned 1998 - Kenny Dalglish was sacked as Manager of Newcastle United. He had led the Toon to thirteenth place in his one full season in charge, being sacked just two unbeaten games into the following season. 1980 - He did not play in our 1-0 defeat at Bradford City in a League Cup Second Round first leg encounter after 180 consecutive appearances ever since his arrival from Celtic, before returning for our 4-1 League defeat of Norwich City at Anfield three days later. However, he struck twice as we won the return 4-0 as we set off towards the Final. Luis starts out 2013 – Young Spanish forward Luis Alberto made his reds bow as we beat Notts County 4-2 after extra time in our League Cup Second Round tie at Anfield. Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge put us into a two-goal lead within half an hour, but County fought back in the second half. Sturridge netted a second before substitute Jordan Henderson made the game safe. Unfortunately, we fell at the next hurdle, losing 1-0 at Manchester United. Youngsters in action 2010 – Raheem Sterling netted his first goal for England Under-17’s as they beat Australia 4-0 in The FA International U17 Tournament at Blundell Park, with Adam Morgan and Matty Regan also featuring. Stalemate to start 1927 - We started the season with a 1-1 draw at Sheffield United with Willie Devlin bagging our goal and Harry Johnson netting the last of his seven strikes past us. This was Matt McQueen’s 200th game in charge of the reds. Other reds games 1977 – We beat West Bromwich Albion 3-0 at Anfield with Kenny Dalglish, Steve Heighway and Jimmy Case all on the scoresheet. 1969 – We won 3-1 at Crystal Palace. Emlyn Hughes, Roger Hunt and Peter Thompson all scored. 1960 – Kevin Lewis was on target as we drew 1-1 a Second Division match at Middlesbrough. 1955 – Billy Liddell bagged a brace as we beat Hull City 3-0 in L4, with Alan Arnell also scoring. 1952 – Kevin Baron netted the only goal of Sheffield Wednesday’s visit to Anfield late on. 1947 – We lost 2-0 to Manchester United at Maine Road. John Morris grabbed the first of his seven goals against the reds, with Stan Pearson bagging one of his eleven. On the move 1987 - Mark Wright joined Derby County from Southampton for a club record receipt of £760,000. He struck ten times in 171 appearances for the Rams before coming to Anfield for £2.2m in July 1991. 2009 - Stephen Warnock joined Aston Villa from Blackburn Rovers, netting four times in 104 games for the Villains before joining Leeds United in January 2013. 2012 – Keeper Daniele Padelli joined Udinese from Sampdoria, having failed to make a senior appearance while in Genoa. 2014 – Swedish reserves winger Kristoffer Peterson was sold to Utrecht, netting twice in twenty games in his first season in the Netherlands. He had arrived at the Academy from Sävedalens IF in January 2011, scoring twice in pre-season for the first team in July 2014. On the same day, ex-red Xabi Alonso announced his retirement from international football after 114 caps for Spain. 2017 – Future reds keeper Andy Lonergan re-signed for Leeds United from Wolverhampton Wanderers on a free transfer, playing nine times in this second spell at Elland Road before moving on at the end of the campaign. 2020 - Pepe Reina signed for S.S. Lazio, playing 37 times in his first campaign in Rome. Also in international action 1991 – Future red Stig Inge Bjørnebye played for Norway Under-21’s as they lost 1-0 to the USSR in a European Championships qualifier in Kristiansand.
