It stayed there for four weeks, before being replaced by The Beatles’ “She Loves You”. Four for Fred 1914 - Fred Pagnam scored four goals as we thumped Tottenham Hotspur 7-2 in our First Division encounter at Anfield. Jackie Sheldon added a brace, with our scoring completed by Billy Banks. This was Spurs’ hundredth League defeat as they reached a century of away games in the League. We have also twice visited White Hart Lane on this day in history, losing on both occasions. 1984 - We lost a League Cup Third Round fixture 1-0, with Clive Allen on target after just six minutes. Michael Robinson made his 52nd and last reds appearance in this game. 1992 – We lost a League game 2-0. Nayim struck a spectacular volley before future red Neil Ruddock headed in from a corner. Fernando Menegazzo was sent off for the visitors, with Istanbul hero Vladimír Šmicer confined to the stands due to injury. Trent’s ton 2020 – Right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold played his hundredth League game for the reds as we came from behind to beat West Ham United 2-1 behind closed doors at Anfield. Mohamed Salah equalised from the spot before the break after Pablo Fornals had opened the scoring. Diogo Jota struck the late winner. Also recently 2015 – We came from behind to win 3-1 at Chelsea. Ramires opened the scoring for the home side early on, with Philippe Coutinho equalising in first-half stoppage time. Coutinho put us ahead before substitute Christian Benteke completed the scoring. 1953 – Roy Bentley bagged the last three of his five goals past us as we lost 5-2 at Chelsea, with Sammy Smyth nabbing a brace for the reds. Teenage centre-back Jack Hobbs made his first start in this game, while Argentine winger Sebastián Leto played his fourth and final reds game. First and last 1936 - Right-half Harry Eastham made his reds bow in our 2-1 First Division defeat of Arsenal at Anfield, with Jack Balmer and Fred Howe on the scoresheet and Alf Kirchen netting the first of his four goals past us. He struck four goals in 68 reds appearances, with his career being interrupted by the Second World War. Joy against the Rokerites We have faced Sunderland three times on this day in history, without being beaten. 1925 - We were held to a 2-2 top-flight draw at Anfield when Harry Chambers and Dick Forshaw struck for the reds. He had been in charge for nearly four years, keeping them in the Second Division until they were relegated earlier that year. 1998 – Tony Cottee bagged the only goal of our trip to Leicester City, one of his eight past us, with Jason McAteer dismissed late on. Reds birthdays 1906 – Forward Ted Crawford was born in Filey, Yorkshire. He signed from Halifax Town in 1932, bagging four goals in eight games before joining Clapton Orient in July 1933, for whom he struck 73 times in 212 Division Three South games. 2002 – Midfielder Tyler Morton was born in Wirral. He joined the club in 2009, signing a new contract in January 2021. He made his senior bow from the bench in a League Cup Third Round win at Norwich City in October 2021, appearing nine times in total during 2021/22. 2006 – Defender Lucas Pitt was born. Hailing from Formby, he signed his first professional contract in April 2024, having been at the Academy since the age of five. White wrong 2006 - Noel White resigned from the Board after leaking critical stories of Rafael Benítez’s rotation policy to the press. He had been on the Board for twenty years, including a spell as Chairman between 1990 and 1991. On the move again 1983 - Former reserves striker Mike Newell joined Wigan Athletic from Crewe Alexandra on a free transfer. He struck 35 times in 92 games for the Latics, before moving on to Luton Town in January 1986. 2011 - El-Hadji Diouf signed for Doncaster Rovers, after his contract with Blackburn Rovers was terminated by mutual consent two months earlier. He bagged six goals in 23 outings for Donny. 2014 – Czech defender Jakub Sokolík re-joined Southend United on loan, playing just twice in this second spell. For Nicholson 1966 - We took part in a match in aid of The Late John Nicholson Memorial Fund, beating a Doncaster Rovers Representative XI 4-3 at Belle Vue. Geoff Strong bagged a brace, while Bobby Graham and Gordon Milne also netted. First caps 1990 - Molde’s Øyvind Leonhardsen made his debut for Norway in their 6-1 friendly defeat of Cameroon in Oslo. Kongsvinger’s Stig Inge Bjørnebye also played. Future red Istvan Kozma also represented his country on that day as Hungary beat Cyprus 4-2 in a Euro 92 qualifier in Budapest. 2000 – Future red Alberto Aquilani won his first cap for Italy Under-16’s as they beat Portugal 2-1. 2014 – Ex-Academy Manager Steve Cooper took charge of England Under-16’s for the first time, but they lost 1-0 to Wales in the Victory Shield in Bangor with young reds Ben Woodburn and Okera Simmonds facing each other. 2008 – Jack Robinson played for England Under-16’s for the only time as they beat Wales 1-0 in the Victory Shield in Llanelli, with Andre Wisdom also featuring. 2001 – Chris McGrath featured for the Irish Under-16’s as they lost a European Championships qualifier 2-0 to Spain in Latvia. Other reds games 1994 – We lost 2-1 at Queens Park Rangers. Trevor Sinclair opened the scoring for the Hoops before John Barnes equalised. Les Ferdinand then struck one of his six goals against the reds. 1972 – Leeds United held us to a 2-2 draw in our League Cup Fourth Round tie at Anfield. Kevin Keegan and John Toshack scored as Mick Jones netted one of his seven goals past us, with Peter Lorimer also on target. 1970 – Tommy Smith converted a penalty before Alun Evans struck as we beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-0 in L4. The reds start out 1892 - We played our first ever competitive fixture, trouncing Higher Walton 8-0 in a Lancashire League fixture at Anfield, in front of a crowd of just 200. Jock Smith, Joe McQue and James Cameron all netted braces, with Malcolm McVean and John McBride also notching. West Derby-born Joe Pearson was the only non-Scot in this ‘Team of the Macs’, playing his only reds game. 1898 - We stepped out in red for the first time, as we beat The Wednesday 4-0 at Anfield, with centre-half Alex Raisbeck making his debut. We had played in blue and white quartered shirts until then. Left-half Bill Goldie bagged his first reds goal with Hugh Morgan, John Walker and Tommy Robertson also on the scoresheet that day. 1952 - We also played the Owls, beating Sheffield Wednesday 2-0 at Hillsborough thanks to goals from Kevin Baron and Billy Liddell. 2008 – Steve Cooper joined the Academy as an Under-12’s Coach, moving up to becoming Academy Manager in July 2011. He moved on to the FA two years later. Happy birthday Le Ex-Boss 1947 - Gérard Houllier was born in Therouanne in France. He was appointed as joint Manager alongside Roy Evans in July 1998, taking over sole charge four months later. He led us to the UEFA Cup, FA Cup, two League Cups, UEFA Super Cup and FA Charity Shield before leaving by mutual consent in May 2004. He then went on to lead Olympique Lyonnais to two straight League titles. Other birthdays 1937 - Left-half Tommy Leishman was born in Stenhousemuir. He had won the Scottish Cup with St. Mirren, signing for £10,000 in November 1949. He helped us back to the First Division in 1962, although he then only made eleven top-flight appearances before returning north of the border, to Hibernian, in January 1963 after a total of seven goals in 118 reds games, including our first ever League Cup strike. 2002 – Forward Layton Stewart was born in Liverpool. He has been with the reds since the age of seven, signing as a professional in February 2020, making his senior bow off the bench in our League Cup tie against Derby County in November 2022. 2003 – Keeper Harvey Davies was also born in Liverpool. He has been with the reds since the age of nine, featuring on the bench in four UEFA Champions League fixtures during 2020/21 and the following campaign. 1985 - Former second choice keeper Scott Carson was born in Whitehaven. He made just nine senior reds appearances following his arrival from Leeds United for £750,000 in January 2005, but only managed to keep two clean sheets. He was sold to West Bromwich Albion for £3.25m in July 2008, after seasons on loan at first Charlton Athletic and then Aston Villa. 1964 - 1980’s Irish reserve midfielder Ken DeMange was born in Dublin. He never made a senior appearance while at Anfield, despite winning full international honours during that time. 1977 - Phil Brazier was born in Liverpool. The defender skippered us to victory in the FA Youth Cup in 1996. Derby stalemate 2022 – We shared a goalless draw with Everton at Goodison Park with both sides hitting the woodwork. Red departures 1958 – Scottish inside-forward Tom Miller died. He netted 56 times in 146 reds games after signing from Hamilton Academical for £400 in February 1912, including an appearance in the 1914 FA Cup Final. However, he is also remembered as being one of the players caught up in the Manchester United match-rigging scandal of 1915, whom he joined in September 1920.His brother John was on the reds books alongside him immediately after the First World War. 1966 - Centre-half John Nicholson died in a car crash, just one day after his thirtieth birthday. He signed with the reds as a professional in January 1957, but only played one senior game before joining Port Vale in August 1961, playing over 200 games for them. 1995 – Right-winger Alex Muir died. He signed from Lochgelly Violet in July 1947, the same club that Billy Liddell was signed from. He only played four senior games before joining South Liverpool in 1949. Bert at the wrong end 1969 – Ex-reds keeper Bert Slater put through his own net as we won a League Cup Second Round tie 2-1 at Watford, with Ian St. John bagging the winner, the club’s 5,000th goal in all competitions. Also recently 1988 - Our most recent game on this day came when Jan Mølby netted the only goal of our home fixture with Manchester United from the spot, with Nigel Spackman also hitting the woodwork. 1947 - We also entertained United, with Albert Stubbins on target in our 2-2 top-flight draw and Jack Balmer converting a penalty. Cyril Sidlow saved a spot-kick taken by United’s Jack Rowley. Stan Pearson bagged one of his eleven strikes past us, with Charlie Mitten netting one of his five. A goalscoring debut 1958 - Inside-forward Alan Banks scored on his reds debut as we thumped Brighton & Hove Albion 5-0 in a home Second Division fixture, with Alan Arnell nabbing a brace and Jimmy Harrower and right-back John Molyneux also netting. Outside-right Fred Morris also made his reds bow that day. 1960 - We also entertained the Seagulls, with Jimmy Harrower on target twice in a 2-0 victory. 1955 - Molyneux made his reds bow as we drew 3-3 at Blackburn Rovers. Eddie Crossan bagged a brace for the home side, with Bob Langton also on target. 1932 - Centre-half Tom ‘Tiny’ Bradshaw grabbed the first of his four reds goals in our 4-3 defeat at Newcastle United. Razor’s ton 1977 - Ray Kennedy reached a century of League appearances for the reds, scoring the only goal very early on at Birmingham City. Robbo in charge 2018 – Left-back Andy Robertson was appointed captain of Scotland. On the same day, Jordan Henderson signed a new contract with the reds. Gems on their way 2001 - Liverpool agreed a deal to sign Le Havre’s two young gems, Anthony Le Tallec and Florent Sinama-Pongolle, for a combined £6m fee, although they would remain in France for another two years. Sinama-Pongolle bagged nine goals in 66 reds games, while his compatriot netted just once in 32 games, and neither remains with the club. Zico foiled 1983 - Phil Neal had a penalty saved, although we were still able to beat Nottingham Forest at Anfield thanks to an Ian Rush goal. Bad Bhoy 1895 – We faced Celtic for the first time in our history, winning an Anfield friendly 2-0 thanks to goals from George Allan and Frank Becton. Young reds 1999 - Steven Gerrard scored on his debut for England Under-21’s as they beat Luxembourg 5-0 in a European Championships qualifier at the Madejski Stadium in Reading. Jamie Carragher and future red Emile Heskey also started, while David Thompson came on as a substitute. Treble for Aldo 1988 - John Aldridge bagged a hat-trick as we beat Charlton Athletic 3-0 at Selhurst Park. Reds centuries 2008 – Dirk Kuyt bagged the only goal late on in his hundredth reds game as we beat Standard de Liège after extra time in the second leg of our Champions League qualifier at Anfield to reach the group stages. This was the hundredth goal we had struck in Europe under Rafael Benítez, while future red Milan Jovanović featured as a late substitute for the visitors. Off on loan 2003 - Right-back Markus Babbel joined Blackburn Rovers on loan, scoring three goals in 28 games. Stalemate to start 1927 - We started the season with a 1-1 draw at Sheffield United with Willie Devlin bagging our goal and Harry Johnson netting the last of his seven strikes past us. This was Matt McQueen’s 200th game in charge of the reds. Other reds games 1977 – We beat West Bromwich Albion 3-0 at Anfield with Kenny Dalglish, Steve Heighway and Jimmy Case all on the scoresheet. 1969 – We won 3-1 at Crystal Palace. Emlyn Hughes, Roger Hunt and Peter Thompson all scored. 1960 – Kevin Lewis was on target as we drew 1-1 a Second Division match at Middlesbrough. 1955 – Billy Liddell bagged a brace as we beat Hull City 3-0 in L4, with Alan Arnell also scoring. 1952 – Kevin Baron netted the only goal of Sheffield Wednesday’s visit to Anfield late on. 1947 – We lost 2-0 to Manchester United at Maine Road. John Morris grabbed the first of his seven goals against the reds, with Stan Pearson bagging one of his eleven. On the move 1987 - Mark Wright joined Derby County from Southampton for a club record receipt of £760,000.
