he was also rubbish the season before and had we sold in 2024 I’d have had no complaints

I think the problem here is that you have taken significant exception to the term 'key player' as if only Mo and Virgil are allowed that moniker. I would say other than those two, he was one of a group of players who were fundamental to the title win. He led the press, scored as many goals as anyone but Mo (I am guessing here) and carried the ball into the opposition half regularly. He was therefore, in my view, a key part of the team that won the title.

Mac Allister, Grav, Konate etc  were also key players. That's why we won the league, because many of our players were great.

Then Gakpo was a key player by that standard. I don't think he was either btw.

I think at least Alisson, Arnold, Van Dijk, Konate, Gravenberch, Szoboslai, Mac Allister and Salah were more important. 

8 players played more than him in the league.

Diaz was great for us. Contributed important goals and assists, showed energy and pressing from the front and rarely injured. Also made space for others. 
 

he’s also 29, wanted to move on and enabled us to get our summer signings in - which on paper are better.

our mistake was not playing by Rio more and signing Isak so late in the window. Bad luck with injuries didn’t help.

I think what Diaz gave us last season was unique and...he was our only true winger, elite ball carrier, tracked back with relentless energy, as crucial as Trent for our quick transitions, and scored if not many at least a few important goals...all qualities severely lacking this season 

I wish we paid him big money for another year if we didn't have confidence in sorting a replacement with equal or better qualities ie: Kvara

I am going to try really hard not to get caught up in it this year. Last year, constantly checking Newcastle forums to see if they could manage to buy any f***ing striker was too much. And Isak has been s***e anyway.

I'd love to think I could just take a passing interest until the football starts again and maybe spend some time with my kids or something but even saying it now, it seems unlikely.

I know it’s a trope now but the genuine pain I put my poor parents through with those phone bills to Teamtalk. One was £800 and one was £500. I have no idea what that translate into in today’s money.

Dreading my kids doing something similar.

It will all feel a bit w*** and flat unless we have a new manager so your family are probably checking The Ajax Wrap everyday to see if they’ll have an engaged father this summer.

haha yeah defo. Think I'll give the forum a break over the summer at least too. 

I hate the idea of behaving like a grumpy child ('what's bloody new' says you, oi cheeky!! ) and caveating any good business we do with Slot. 

Conversely, them getting in a new manager and then having a good window would drag me right back in.
